GREAT! I had corned beef and potatoe salad. I am sure the potato salad was not good for me but it was soooo good. The corned beef was excellent. I added a picture of the notice under the sammies that said one had to pay more for lean. NOW THIS IS MY KIND OF PLACE!!!The vast majority of places that make corned beef Sammie have no clue what makes them taste good. Some fat really adds flavor.
That pastrami made me happy. I recently moved to New York and kept hearing that pastrami was the best thing ever. Unfortunately my experiences have always been bad until today. Amazing kosher spot, very nice staff (a bit slow, but that’s fine) clean and food is absolutely delicious. The pastrami was thin cut and my sandwich was filled with goddess. Had some mustard and you are in heaven. The coke slow was perfect with vinaigrette. I would highly recommend and go back again for more goodness
Food was traditionally deli and new York! They had an interesting take on pigs and blankets but still good. Service was impeccable and really good. Have to try the dessert very savoury. We left our payment card with the bill and they happily held unto it till we could get back and pick it up.
The food is decent but plainThe service is gruffThe prices are OUTRAGEOUSLY highSome sanitary concernsSeriously, $22 for a basic sandwich that comes with nothing. No lettuce, no cheese, no mayo. Just a plain stack of turkey on plain bread. For that price, I can buy a whole turkey! Want a side? $7. What makes them think they are worth these prices? My turkey sandwich really came with nothing- no cheese, no mayo, etc. just meat and bread. When I requested mayo, I was provided a container that came from another customer’s table. What if I spit in it? See the problem with this?I would not return mainly due to gruff service and extreme price gouging. Better values virtually anywhere.
Y O U W O N T B E D I S S A P O I N T E D ! ! ! You also wont go home hungry. If you think Katz is good, give this place a try. You want a good brisket or schnitzel sandwich with creamy Russian dressing? YOU GOT IT. You want some hot matzo ball soup on a cold rainy day? COME GET IT!
I would eat here every day if I could afford it! Corned beef sandwich and a pint of matzoh ball soup came out to $36 but was honestly worth it. They pile on the meat! Realistically you could make 4 regular sandwiches with the amount of meat they give you. I only wish they carried all ingredients for a reuben.
I called to inquire whether they would ever consider reducing the excessive costs for delivery and service fees as a regular customer The cost for a half pound of deli meat is $24.00 then delivery is $6 and service fees are $3 and after a generous tip to the driver say 7$ . The cost for this half pound is over $45???? WTH??? The person answering the call rudely said if you can afford it then youll pay and hung up on me! Food is great but overcharged on fees. The original on 33rd would never do this. That is ESSEN for you. Jack Lebewohl the ESSEN group should have their franchise rights revoked. We can all agree this is not the time to price gauge!!
One of my favorite go to places for any meal. Mixed deli omelette for breakfast, giant burger and fries for lunch, and a great big bowl of chicken soup and hot Romanian pastrami for dinner. Pickles and health salad come with every meal and a chocolate soda to chase it all down.
I always wanted to try a traditional kosher deli but Ill admit I was a letdown. The atmosphere ambiance the staff all great, the prices of sandwiches were tough to swallow 20-50 bucks. It would have been a lot easier if they didnt taste so plain. The lack of seasoning/ flavor of the meat make it hard to recommend over other delis.
Found!Second Avenue Deli is a classic New York Deli that suffers from two problems.1. It is on 2nd Avenue.2. Despite its historic roots, it is too new to feel old and therefore just seems a bit dingy.Dont get me wrong, the food is excellent. Corned beef is top notch. Matzo Ball Soup excellent. But it is better to order in that spend time there. For more great review of the New & Authentic visit TheLoupe!
Legitimate pastrami. Tender, soft, and insanely flavorful. I ordered the beef pastrami...and it was sublime. MUST HAVE. Served on rye bread (with nothing else - because it needed nothing else). Cole slaw was a perfect supplement. Pickle was divine. Meal with finalized with a complementary (odd but) very tasty chocolate soda. Staff was incredibly friendly and happy. A+
Pastrami is lean and good. Health salad with cabbage very good. Beet salad is fresh. Israeli salad is tasty. Avoid the turkey it is very dry and tasteless. Soups are always good. They are caring and will give you a sample. Be prepared to spend. This deli is not cheap!
My husband and I walked into the place thinking its just your regular diner. After a moment of looking through the menu, we knew that we made a mistake... The soups are $10, sandwiches $20, specialties vary from $30 - $50. No milk or cheese on the menu (the deli is kosher), which we didnt realize upon entering. I am a vegetarian, and it was pretty tough for me to choose something. Everything on the menu is made with tongue, or some sort of red meat... Yuck. The meals on the menu reminded me of old-school Slovakian meals my grandmother would prepare. I ended up getting a mushroom omelette, which was pretty dry and flat. Edible, but probably the worst omelette Ive ever had. The server kept giving us all these complimentary things: pickles, weird cheap sour cabbage salad and then chocolate ice cream float (all items little weird and funny). Both our meals seemed kind of basic and cheap. I feel that the only thing youre paying for here is nostalgia (although some of the meals did remind me of my Slovakian grandmothers cuisine, nostalgia did not do it for me). Later, we just laughed at the whole experience. Not going back, though.
Service was good but there was only one other customer. I use to love the original 2nd ave Deli. This new version is the equivalent of an average diner. Brisket was shredded and tasteless, my wifes pastrami was mostly fat.. What happened to the deli fries?Katz or Harrolds still gives you that quality of old school deli.
Its a great New York place to get pastrami in kosher food. The service is good. The meats and sandwiches are awesome. The pastrami is top notch. What stops you from getting above 3 stars is all the desserts that they offer are brought in from outside the restaurant. Also, menu is somewhat Limited in options. The service and food is great. For New York, nothing spectacular
Wow, many great expectations. Ruined by waiting on service, pastrami’s are simple, meat and bread. Then dress how you want. Looked good but It was cold, flavorless and honestly terrible. On another note the ginger ale and bread was great. Waitress was rude and in the end she threw my check at me. Worst service in NYC.
The home cured corned beef was fatty juicy and Simply Delicious. I had it on rye bread with Russian dressing and coleslaw and the pickles on the side made the meal complete. Oh yes I almost forgot about the nice crispy french fries. All in all I really enjoyed this meal.
Ok, you know they have great pastrami and corned beef, but did you know the chicken soup can heal you like penicillin? It has a matzo ball so fluffy it can float in mid air.And talk about options... The mixed deli omelette is my sons favorite. At least going gluten free is tasty in a place like this.Order the deli sandwich with bread on the side and enjoy the mountain sized platter of melt in your mouth meats.
HERES HOW TO DO IT. Dale ordered a turkey sandwich (about $24) and it was ridiculously large so she ate what she could and threw the rest away. I ordered a half pound of sliced pastrami and 4 slices of rye bread ($21). I made a normal sandwich for dinner with half the pastrami and had enough left for a second sandwich a few days later. In the 50s and 60s there were more than 3,000 delis like this in NYC. Now there are half a dozen. They struggle to survive because of rent and labor costs so they do what they can. This is a good deli.....authentic........but its best to know how to handle it.
I had a very good experience at the Deli. The food was absolutely incredible. Very old school, the kind of food my Grandmother used to make for us for Shabbat. The matzoh ball soup was great, and by itself could have been enough for dinner, but of course I had a double decker sandwich that was out of this world. The side dishes were just like what my Grandmother used to make. The Kasha Varnishkas were so good that I ordered a portion to go too. Just an incredible experience.
I placed a large order for delivery from 2nd avenue deli and could not have been happier with the service I received. Sofia was incredibly helpful and patient when I placed the order. The order was delivered at the perfect time complete with silverware and plates for 25. I had several annoying instructions that the deli executed perfectly. Would definitely order from here again for a group. Thank you!!
One of NYC finest Delicatessen. I just cant get enough of the hand crafted sandwiches. I ordered The Nova Scotia Salmon Sandwich. A plain Bagel, With everything on the side.it always busy. And with the great service staff on hand it makes everything so wonderful to eat in, or to have it to go.
RODENTS OBSERVEDhad lunch here today and a mouse ran across the floor in front of where I was sitting. I advised my waiter and the check out person and they never said a word in response to it. Apparently they are used to hearing about complaints about mice.On top of this the food was below average and the prices are off the charts. Strongly advise looking elsewhere to eat.
Worse meal I’ve ever had , been going there since I was a kid will never go back there . The most nastiest manager on the phone . take out order and bring it back home to Brooklyn after spending $146 .00. Stale cucumber salad , old bread, hot dogs were brown inside. The disrespect was the worst on the part of the manager he was calling me a liar. What ever happened to the Customer is always right? ????
I was there around 4pm, after a doctors appointment that ended up taking all day. I was STARVING! I ordered whitefish on a bagel and Israeli salad. The service was fantastic! Very attentive, had a nice little conversation with my waiter. The bagel was stale and bready, I was disappointed. Maybe I got unlucky. The whitefish was delicious, as is every fresh whitefish salad in this city. The Israeli salad was alright, but the prices here really are absurd—even for the UES. Freaking $8.50 for a little bowl of tomatoes, cucumber, and parsely. $15+ for a whitefish salad sandwich on a day-old bagel. Add iced tea and tip and I paid more than $30 for a meal I can get across the street from my apartment in Brooklyn for $12, and the dudes in my hood even put salt on the salad (which is a nice touch 2nd Ave Deli should try).Lets just pause here to meditate on the fact that most of their sandwiches are over $20. Can you imagine getting a $20 sandwich on bad bread? A risk only a fool would accept. A fool, I say!Im not from the neighborhood, so maybe I just dont get it. Maybe eating at 2nd Ave Deli is a status symbol for locals or something like that. You tuck your $10M kids into your $8k stroller and go sit down to order a $9 side salad... that sort of thing. But I wasnt there to look rich, I was there to get lunch. And for what they charged, the food they put in front of me was a joke. I was starving and it was there so I ate it, but it was a joke. A joke, I say!Bottom line: when you see the prices on the menu, you expect the food youre ordering to be great. In my experience, it wasnt.
Very strange place that I would not return to. Prices are so high for a rundown sandwich and deli meat. Deep fried pierogies? Thats not authentic. $10 soup? At a deli? Maybe if they made the serving sizes smaller it would be more appropriate and then they could charge a normal price for a sandwich. Nice touch - cole slaw, beets and egg cream at the end.
Mmm, good! From matzo ball soup to the hot pastrami sandwiches, this place knows how to make old world comfort food. Every customer is served a plate of pickles and Cole slaw and every check is accompanied by a shot glass with chocolate soda. I look forward to my 2 Ave indulgences whenever Im in the area.
I recall going to this deli when I was a young girl with my dad a couple of times. When my daughter moved to NYC and lived nearby, I wanted to go there again. I was excited to reminisce, and tell my daughter about my younger days experiencing the various places in NY I used to go to with my parents. I was deeply disappointed; my corned beef sandwich was dry (even with mustard); potato salad was full of mayonnaise instead of potatoes. My daughters omelet was cooked with oil, instead of butter, and she quickly had a stomach ache which lasted a couple of days. So after spending over $70 for this meal; they will not see me there again. If I could give a zero star I would.
Coming here for the second time was disappointment squared. We were looking for the salmon sampler and when we asked the waitress we were told these were taken off the menu. When we got to order, we asked for mashed potatoes, to which were were also informed were off the menu, and only french fries are available. If the disapointment was not enough, the waitress kindly brought the manager over to explain why they removed the items on the menu, the manager didnt give much of a reson only that these were not best sellers, his noticeable discomfort on the subject made the whole lack of apoplogy and conversation completely awkward and useless. He, like the waitress, insisted we take the salmon bagel instead. As if having a bagel with lettuce and tomato will magically be the equivalent of having a mountain of smoked salmon. Im sorry, the place keeps several types of salmon for making all sorts of things, if something is not a best seller and yet keep all the raw ingredients in stock for other thigns, whats the need to remove it from the menu? or serving it to the customer who came back only for this dish.Lastly, the service was really bad, our waitress would keep walking by acknowledging we wanted to place an order but only taking it until the 6th time. If this happend once, fine, but it happened three times !To re-iterate my position, whatever changes were done here, they manifest as dissapointment squared. if you find youself between places, the food here is good, but unless you put up with everything else that is wrong, I suggest you go to the other place you had in mind. This place simply fell off its pedestal.
Ive never had pastrami and corned beef like I had at this place everything that you have just melt-in-your-mouth the pickles are so fresh and homemade the coleslaw is so fresh and homemade and love workers are incredibly amazing so friendly will forever want to come back here and eat again
Not great, food is overpriced and the manager is rude. The used to be amazing before they sold out to only make as much money as possible. The menu is extremely limited, one third of the items they used to have and the kitchen is a central kitchen on 14th street which means they do bot cook in the Restaurant.I watched as they unload a bus tray full of potato latkes and it grossed me out.Go back to the old days and start to compete with katzs
As one of the last remaining original and authentic delis in NYC, this establishment had been run and operated by the same family since its establishment. In the over 30+ years I have been patronizing this fine and historical institution, I HIGHLY recommend this as a stop on any visitors itinerary. Their matzah ball soup and mushroom barley soup are unparalleled, and there isnt a single one of their triple-decker sandwiches that isnt worth killing someone for. Go! Have a blast and get a taste of some NY history!
2nd Ave deli, FYI, is not actually on second ave. Theres apparently a long story about some kind of rent disagreement, but long story short, 2nd Ave Deli used to be on 2nd ave, but now its sandwiched somewhere between 3rd and lex.Ive always had a thing for pastrami (who doesnt?), so obviously I have frequented Katzs many times in the past. However, after having wondered how it was that there were so few old, deli type establishments around, and after having heard about 2nd ave deli, I made the trip up here to check it out.Being in midtown, its a lot smaller than Katzs naturally. Also, the counter is a little bit different, in that its more similar to a typical restaurant. Anyway, I only got one thing, so thats what Im going to compare it to. In terms of quantity of meat, you get an alright amount- probably similar to what you get at Katzs, but maybe slightly less. As for the quality of meat... its okay, but nothing outstanding. The way that the meat tastes at Katzs is pretty amazing, while the meat here doesnt have very well marbled fat. In addition, the meat is cut kind of thinly, which I didnt like.
Every time someone comes to NYC, I make sure they experience 2nd avenue. There are many imitators but there is only one 2nd Ave. Best pastrami in the land, what else do you need! Well if you do need more, just know the deli selection is to die for and the rest aint too shabby either!
The Frank in blankets was soaked with a lot of oil, the worst was the burger bread, dry and hard as a stone in a horrifying way. when I with asked to replace the bread I got leftovers chala of The waiter did not even bother to apologize to me, just upset, I and my family were fixed there, we will not get to the rest of the community!
Classic NY Jewish Deli experience. For better or worse, the prices mean this place is no longer the bargain it was back when Aunt Zadie and Bubbie went here on dates in the 1950s, but the unlimited pickles & coleslaw, heaping servings of delicious pastrami on rye and deep bowls of fortifying matzo ball soup will leave you stuffed to the gazip and beyond satisfied.
After reading such glowing reviews, I made it a point to come here after a conference in the city. I must say, I feel like a jerk for coming - and dragging two friends in tow.Bullets of our experience:Appetizers:-Fried chicken skin - mehh-Pickles two types, pickled tomato - mehh-Coleslaw - goodMain entrees:-Tongue center cut - $20.95, all fat, no meat-Meat/Potato knish - re-fried, to the point of being burnt-Pastrami - seemed like a one trick pony, relying purely on hot fat to make it palatable.-One positive of the night was a free carbonated yoohoo shotWould not come back. I guess next time, I would probably go back to Katzs, or venture out to a lesser-known mom and pop delicatessen.
Only a few left of real traditional DELIS REMAINING MUST BE THE BEST.IM not confused WHATEVER is on the menu you can rest assured (as in comparison) youll be satisfied 100% of the time alwaysI AM NOW HUNGRY FOR A PASTRAMIE ON RYE OH WELL THE ONLY THING MISSING IS A CHOLATE EGG-CREAMAM I SHOWING MY AGE!!!

2022-04-25Can’t say enough about the amazing pastrami sandwiches 2nd Ave Deli makes. Just simply flavorful and juicy - perfection at its best. Grabbed a sandwich to go with potato salad, cookies and Dr. Browns - headed to Central Park and enjoyed every bit of the New York experience. The portion was good enough to split with another person.

2021-08-11Great deli, great service. The spinach knish was especially delicious. Matzoh soup had gorgeous clear broth and a good hearty helping of carrots. The matzoh ball itself was perfection.

2021-08-04Great food, nice staff need more vegetarian soup options. Then they get a 5 stars. Easy to make pea soup and motzoh ball soup with vegetable stock VS meat stock. The manager is a vegetarian and still the restaurant can do right and balance the menu choices.

2022-05-30I wish I had seen recent reviews before I picked up this pastrami sandwich tonight. Over $30 for a completely normal sized (even small) sandwich and a can of root beer. They have to be kidding. You at least used to get an overstuffed sandwich, seems like things have changed during the pandemic. I will sadly never go back here.

2022-05-18The sandwiches are excellent but I have to take a couple of stars off because the portion size has dwindled. Normally you get a lot of meat for the high sandwich price, but now it is maybe 50% of what it used to be pre covid. I would say now, its a bit of a rip off. The sandwiches are good though. Ill maybe have it once a year instead of once a month now.

2022-03-14I offer this review for other customers to make informed decisions on spending money and time at this establishment.Upon arrival, we were told to sit anywhere we chose. There were several tables that had dirty dishes so we chose the table that was clean, but it was larger than our party. The restaurant was not crowded, but after waiting about 15 minutes with no one coming over at all - not even to provide a menu, we decided to leave. We quietly, without any fuss, got up and left. As we were walking out the door, one of the staff came running after us, screaming that we should not have sat at a larger table and for that reason they did not come and help us for how were they to know our full party was there, continuing on with his tirade, berating us further until the hostess pushed him into the back area of the restaurant. This onslaught came out of nowhere and was completely inappropriate, unacceptable, and unprofessional, further considering we never had any interaction with this (or any) staff person at all once we chose our table. There are plenty of ways of handling a situation, but harassing customers is not one of them. I will not be returning to this restaurant and dont recommend supporting an establishment that treats its guests in this manner.

2022-06-13The best old fashioned Jewish Deli!We go from Philadelphia to see my Orthopedic surgeon in the Upper East Side. But we cant go without stopping at 2nd Avenue Deli. We look forward to this for weeks sometimes.Everything they make is so good that I want everything on the menu.End up mostly getting a Pastrami on rye Sandwich with Russian Dressing. Its melt your mouth tender, and tastes fantastic! And this is from someone that eats very little red meat! Looking forward to my next surgery at HSS! 😅😛🤩
