Abyssinia in other cities:
This place exceeded my expectations. I am a Harlem resident and I had passed this restaurant on a weekly basis for at least the last 10 years. I went on a date and he chose this place and I am so happy that he did. Its a nice intimate restaurant that seats maybe 30 people. The prices were amazing and the food was even better. I definitely suggest the beef samosas they were amazing. We did a two person meat combo so you get a little bit of everything this is a must try restaurant.
The food is always very good and flavorful. I haven’t ordered anything I did not like and the wait time for your food is very short. A great place for a date night or if you have friends coming to catch up/visit. I got the Abyssinia meat combo for two and was stuffed by the end of the plate. This can for sure feed 2 adults and a child or even 3 adults.
This was my first time eating Ethiopian food with my party of three, the sambusa appetizer was delicious along with the entrees we ordered which were the meat combo and the veggie combo.... restaurant’s atmosphere was chill. Only gripe would be friendlier service, felt like we were asked to leave by the end since they kept asking if we were done or not.
Great unique food. Extremely tasty. The crispy fried lamb Yebeg Awaze Tibs was great. The Ethiopian honey wine enet tej is a must have. The Doro Wat or spicy chicken was great as well. However do not go there if you are in a hurry and service takes time as I feel they prepare everything from scratch.
When I came here, I ordered what I always do when I try Ethiopian: a meat platter and a vegetable platter. Taste was phenomenal, service was great. Every one of the thirteen different items on our platter was on point. I’ve eaten Ethiopian probably twenty times in many different cities and this was one of the best.
Came here to catch up with my friend. Great friendly atmosphere. Staff is friendly. Food is delicious. We got the meat sambusa and the second meat combo for two. There is nice background music. Not a loud place. There was plenty of room for my baby and his big stroller by the table. No changing table but enough room in the restroom to take the stroller and change baby in there.
Been here twice in the last couple of weeks. The first time we got sambusas, one meat combo and one veggie combo. Pictured is the veggie combo for 2 the second time around. I recommend both. Service is decent/good, not bad but not absolutely amazing. Theyll offer you more bread if you finish the first plate. Will definitely come back again for at least a third and fourth time.
Incredible! I never tried Ethiopian food before but I got takeout from Abyssinia and loved it. I got the veggie combo and veggie sambusa, both 10/10! It was packed super well, and I reheated some leftover veggies the next day and it was just as delicious. If you like Indian food, you will love this place 👍
Are you in the mood for some deliciousness?! Maybe you are Vegan, craving a healthy and fulfilling meal? How about some beef/chicken Tibs, sauteed with numerous Spices and Herbs?Try something from Abyssinia, and You will indeed be left a lifelong fan of the Tasty and Divine Ethiopian food!
I have been enjoying the food here for years- like the previous poster- since it was half the size. I have ordered take out about 5 times since the pandemic hit and the food is still great. Ive picked up the order and had it delivered and the food is still delicious. It is by far the best Ethiopian food in Manhattan. The injera bread is amazing.
This restaurant has great food and very kind staff. I love love love the veggie platter. So healthy, filling and so flavorful. My favorites are the shiro, gomen, mesir wot, and yellow split peas I forget what they’re called. Just delicious and so satisfying. If service is a little slow please relax - they get very busy including with takeout. Every time I eat from here I can’t wait for the next time. So glad they are just a short walk from where I live.
Ive loved Abyssinia since it was much smaller , half the size it is now. The food is always clean and flavorful, the service is always friendly and treat you like family, and never greasy like some of the other Ethiopian restaurants in the city. It is quality, unpretentious, classic dishes cooked obviously with lots of love, and I hope to keep coming back for years to come.
This was my first experience eating Ethiopian food and it was great! The service here was lovely. We had a mixed group of meat lovers and vegans and first timers and they handled all of our needs so graciously and were so helpful. The food was delicious and the experience of how the meal is shared was also a very beautiful cultural experience. This place is great, stop by!
Wow!My friend and I had an absolutely fabulous dinner here!We ordered the meat combo platter for two which had a huge variety of meat dishes as well as some vegetable dishes too. The platter was HUGE and everything was beyond delicious. Our server, Bhirma (sorry if I misspelled your name!) was super kind and attentive! This seems to be a small, family-owned restaurant with a dedicated staff. We were even able to briefly meet the owner who was extremely kind and sweet. They were clearly following COVID guidelines—having minimal customers in the restaurant. They even had hand sanitizer on each table and all staff (which was minimal) were wearing masks.I loved this food, plus the staff and the atmosphere! Thank you—it was 100% great!
So, so, sooo good. I tried many very good places in the area and finally settled on this one. During the pandemic we order from here twice a week and it is such wonderful comfort food. The injera here is delicious. We always get the same thing: the veggie combo with the beets and the chicken doro wat - with extra injera.. and the lentil sambusa - which is as good as the meat one, and both are delicious. Everything is perfectly spiced. Enough to make your nose run, but edible - with injera, which helps with the spice. My partner has to stop me from actually licking the container at the end. And the people who work here are lovely!
The service was excellent and they place a bottle of hand sanitizer on your table. Tables are scattered and distanced. The Sambusa was perfect. The pastry was crispy with creamy warm lentils that were perfectly seasoned on the inside. The injera was moist and flavorful. I had the vegetable plate. The lentils, Split peas, greens, and green beans. Everything was properly cooked and seasoned. The Doro Wat chicken was tender and melted of the bone, with a sauce that reminded me of Mole. All good, definitely a 5.
Excellent vegetarian fare. Specifically, the Abyssinian Vegetarian Special for two is a ton of food with a great variety of moist, savory foods. There is a wonderful beet and potato blend in an earthy/smoky sauce, string beans and carrots stewed, spicy lentils, chopped chick peas in a thick sauce, and the star of everything is the collard greens which are well cooked and an excellent blend of bitter and sweet. Youll inhale a plate of this is so good. The service is really friendly too. I have taken my partner there on numerous dates and have never had anything but courteous, attentive service and excellently prepared food.I wish I could give it 6 stars!
Delicious, amazing food! Meat sambusas were my favourite, along with the spiced tea which is cinnamon flavoured. Run by a family, very down to earth and nice. Humble place, authentic food, unlimited free injera! Lunch menu is around $4 cheaper per dish than dinner menu - make sure to ask because they tried to give us the more expensive dinner menu. It runs till 3.30pm.
Came here for dinner once with a date... we were looking for a place to eat after going to a museum and happened to stumble upon this place. We came in, but it didnt open yet for dinner so we stayed at the bar for about 20 min and ordered a drink until they told us we were ready to be seated.I ordered the paella, which I love so much. The portion is pretty big !!! Cant believe I finished it all myself....but it was delicious!! Had lots of clams, shrimps, mussels and also had a lobster in it too. It was like $30ish for the paella, little pricey but worth it!! The rice was very flavorful and the seasoning was on point. We also ordered a pitcher of sangria... no complaints about that. Cant go wrong with sangria!
As an Ethiopian, I have a very high bar for the food. Although there are many nice Ethiopian restaurant in NYC, I found Abyssinia to be the best of all in terms of authenticity of the flavor and taste. The Kitfo (raw minced meat) is one of the best Ive ever had outside Ethiopia. The waitresses are super-friendly with speedy service. And the price is very reasonable! Im happy this place exists in Harlem.
Really great family-run restaurant! I usually get the vegetarian combination, which varies a bit depending on whats in season. Its always delicious. The injera is fresh and made in-house, and I often call ahead to order a 10-piece bag ($10) to take home. They got their start making injera out of their home before opening the restaurant, so you know its good.Glad to see that theyve reopened after renovations--the dining area has expanded into the space next door.
LOVE this place! I usually get the combo (both the veggie and meat) platters so I get to try everything. The food here is perfectly seasoned so that it has all the delicious Ethiopian flavors without being overpowering. Ive grown to like injera bc of the delicious food its served on top of. Try not to fill up on the injera that comes on the side bc the injera on the platter soaks up all the flavors of the food.
Ive been there in person and also just had an order online/delivered. The food was just as good delivered as it was in the restaurant. On time and delicious. In the restaurant, I would order the avocado salad (not available on the doordash site) and also the special lamb tibs (lamb not available on doordash either). Collard greens and the green beans are a must also. I love the atmosphere here too. Having been to Ethiopia a few times, I love the pictures of the sites on the walls and the quiet, traditional service and decor. Amasaganaldo! (Thanks in Amharic, spelling not confirmed)
Delicious Ethiopian food at reasonable prices! We had the veggie combo with one of the meat dishes and sopped up everything with injera; the last few bites are the best, when the flatbread has soaked up all the sauces and things are getting real messy.Only drawback was the slow service; it took 40 minutes to get our food and a while more to get the bill. The wait staff is very friendly, however, and patiently explained different dishes to us.
Really love Ethiopian food, and have tried it from all over the place including different states and countries but this one by far was the worst one Ive tried. Really didnt get to taste the flavor in the doro wot as my order came only with dry chicken, not even the sauce its cooked in. I ended up having to drink the injera down since the chicken was dry and the sauce wasnt there. Never going back to this place as there are many other Ethiopian restaurants around the city, which I have been going too for years but wanted to try something new
Nice little spot in Harlem. Very classy atmosphere and friendly staff. My first time eating Ethiopian food and I loved the dishes. The beef sambusas were just like a well seasoned and tasty homemade beef patty. I ordered the beef combo dish, served with the injera bread (which is amazing), however I wasnt such a big fan of the overall sour taste of the way the meats were cooked, & this is because it was my first time eating genuine Ethiopian food. While eating, however, I came to the realization that the Ethiopian style of meat cooking is something that will either grow on you or youll love it. I loved it, but I recognized that the sour taste of some of the dishes was something Id still have to get used to. This didnt take away from the overall effect of the food though, which was well seasoned and spicy, just the way Im used to.Likewise I shared the food with my mother the following day and she was also not used the the sour taste of some of the stews. But for me, eating the food the second time around my tastebuds had started to get accustomed to it so it was fine for me.I highly recommend drinking the honey wine with your meal! Its absolutely delicious & if youre like me and unused to the tastes of the food it definitely helped balance out the meal, with sour and sweet.I will be back & will try the veggie dishes! The food is a reminder of my familys Carribbean dishes.
Having tried Ethiopian food in Addis Ababa, I have to say that Abyssinia is the best Ethiopian restaurant in NYC. It competes with Ethiopian restaurants in Washington D.C. I have been to many Ethiopian restaurants in the City (Lower East Side, Brooklyn, Morning side, the two other in Harlem on 114th and 151st)—— Abyssinia is consistently the best. The service and ambiance are also great. My favorite dish is the kitfo (spiced raw beef, like a tartar). It’s hard for me to justify eating out at any other restaurant..
This place doesnt look that interesting and honestly doesnt really look appealing on the outside but the food is amazing! I always get the meat combo and always leave so stuffed. Service is quick! Unfortunately, they dont deliver but you can do pickup if you live close by!
We went to this place for dinner. I have eaten in many Ethiopian restaurant before and i enjoy eating Ethiopian food a lot.But the food at this place was not tasty at all. Me and my husband thought that one of the curries had gone bad. The waitress told us that we cant order beets curry as a side curry for no good reason.
Ive been coming to this particular restaurant for years due to their food actually being the best seasoned food between Manhattan and Brooklyn however lately my last two encounters were not pleasant at all. On a slow day I wanted Ethiopian and an out of town friend wanted Caribbean even though I wanted to dine in and enjoy a meal they wouldnt allow my friend to come in because she had bagged food from a Caribbean restaurant nearby which was unusual. I didnt think too much of that experience. This evening I called to say I would be by to purchase a wine that is hard to find in the state. When I arrived ms tried to purchase the wine the waitress asked if it was ok to sell it to me in her native language which she assumed I did not speak. She upcharged me for the bottle which usually runs anywhere from $10-20 in wine stores and in their restaurant then after waiting several min for her to actually gives me my wine while she played with bottles in the wine cellar and continued talking about my purchase, there was a full conversation about my purchase in a native language that it was assumed I didnt understand. I was so insulted. While I sat outside waiting for my uber to leave and go back to my state the gentleman from the bar stools cane outside to tell me I couldnt stand in front of the restaurant to wait on a bus as he blew his cigarette smoke towards me when I informed him that I was waiting for my Uber he tried to tell me that I needed to wait for It at the corner of 135th street and continued talking about me in his native language. This has had to be the most awful and humiliating experience Ive ever had at any reaturaunt. I dont ever remember them being this rude or nasty and Ive been making it my point to come to this resturaunt when I am in town since 2012. I understand that the demographics of Manhattan is changing as neighborhoods become gentrified however I expect the service of restaurants to stay the same or to improve. This restaurant never has to worry about me EVER returning or referring anyone that I know to dine there. Thank God for other options between Brooklyn and Harlem. I feel extremely awful now about the energy that went into the purchase of my bottle of wine. It doesnt match the spirit of Ethiopia at all. I will NEVER be back. Sincerely one formerly loyal customer.
The food is good and unique, and the staff here welcome anyone who choose to dine here. But, I think that the place is little over priced. I know if it is up t me if I choose to eat here or not, but I think that people who plan to visit here will know: Good food, pricey.

2022-03-20A place I definitely recommend and will visit again in the future. The food is absolutely delicious. You can taste the authenticity in each bite from its ethnic origination. Family friendly. Service can be a little better in promptness from receiving the food and being able to close out your check. For the location and the amount of food you receive for the price, it’s worth it because of the taste. Parking however can be an issue, certainly recommend using public transportation or cab service.

2021-11-17Absolutely the best food ever. Loved the atmosphere. Everything was truly a treat. The lamb we chose to eat over rice.. and it was phenomenal! My mom, sister and I were given the best customer service and hope to visit when we are in town again.

2021-06-24Lip smackingly delicious Ethiopian cuisine! Sambusa, tomato salad, and Yetimatim Fitfit for starters were super - with the sambusa winning this round. For the main course we went with a veggie combo platter for sharing, and accompaniment of lamb (lega tibs), beef (lega tibs), and chicken (doro wat - extra spicy, with an egg). Loads of fresh injera bread to scoop up the mouth watering dishes with. After the carb overload, we finished with a round of fairly strong coffee (not Ethiopian, but still good).

2022-07-27This place is wonderful, and there is always very nice staff working. We have tried several dishes and appetizers at this point (lamb awaze tibs, special kitfo, gored gored, yetimatim fitfit) and all of the sides, and have enjoyed everything. The baklava for desert is also really good.

2021-05-22So happy we chose this place to eat. The staff was courteous and friendly, the ambience was modest but cozy, and most importantly the food was fantastic. Meats and vegetables cooked and seasoned to perfection atop a soft, sour, pillowy injera bread. Would definitely recommend this place as a “must go” in Harlem.PS: Bathrooms are very clean!

2022-08-17Over the many times I have been here I have tried the special kitfo, yetimatim fitfit, gored gored, and meat combo among others. The lamb awaze tibs are my favorite, and all of the sides are good. The baklava is also good for dessert. Portions are big enough that we usually have leftovers, and the service is great with extremely nice staff. Its a quiet place if you are looking to sit down for dinner, but if you order take out it will be ready in a reasonable time frame.

2018-05-08Perhaps the best place in the city for authentic and reasonably priced Ethiopian food! Good portions served on a big piece of injera, the food is tasty and leaves you with that warm satisfying feeling. Service is also fast and staff are friendly.
