I feel very fortunate to live so close to what I believe is one of THE BEST Indian restaurants in the city (disclaimer: I am not Indian, but a majority of the patrons are). Ive tried several items, love their Pongal, but have settled into a weekly weekend ritual of ordering the Mumbai Thali. Their thalis are always delicious, but the Mumbai has just the right amount of everything to be perfectly satisfying. Pair it with a coffee for a great brunch. One which fills you for the entire day!
The interior decor leaves a lot to be desired but this was my go to spot when my best friends apt was around the corner. The samosa chaat is incredible and the chili paneer is pure comfort food. Prices have also remained similar over the last 3 years so I remain loyal to them.
This restaurant is not a franchise of regular A2B or Adyar Ananda Bhavan. BEWARE!!!Ordered South Indian thali and got watery sambhar, half-cooked Veg curry made of frozen vegetables, basmati rice(south indians dont use it for thali)…Nothing about this place is authentic South Indian and was robbed of my money for a very sub-standard food and namesake of another popular restaurant.
This place is my guilty pleasure. It gives me the reminiscence of the place where I come from😍 Food is so delicious that you cant stop ordering. Anyone who craves for South Indian food its a must visit. Filter coffee is so good here. It literally makes you think about home😍
Came across this vegetarian authentic South Indian restaurant on first avenue during one of my walks around NYC. From the name of the restaurant to it’s appearance, the food, the style of serving , everything in there takes you down the memory lane. The only jolt you get into reality is the price. It is pricey considering Indian food standards but not pricey considering it is in the city. However, it is totally worth every penny. The place is super-clean, the ambience good with Indian music playing in the back ground and the service good. I ordered the idli -Vada sambar platter and the filter coffee and I must say that it was one of the best I have eaten. The filter coffee was on the mark. So, kudos to these guys for maintaining such a nice and authentic place without cutting corners!
Made a large order for a group of 6 shortly before they opened, and they still delivered really fast. Online ordering was really easy to use, and the food was really good. They have a large variety of vegetarian dishes that are all at a good price. Id definitely eat here again. Thanks for a great meal!
The staffs are so nice!!I really love this place😁I thought i was in india!!If you want to go india , if you want to try india,Then you better go this place first! This restaurant is south India restaurant!!And This is a vegan / vegetarian friendly restaurant!!!I’m a vegan!! So I was totally comfortable in this lovely restaurant!!!You can feel the culture! !I used my right “hand” to eat!!😂Of course, they have a folk and spoon and knifeBut I want to try real indiaSo i used hand 🖐Do you know why they don’t use a folk?Because in their culture, they think it’s not clean that used folks!!And they use right hand to eat!!Because they use left hand in restrooms!Haha 😄 so exciting cultureI love this place 💕Dosa(?) was bigger than costco pizzas 😂Check this picsI strongly recommend the foods that i post!!Don’t expect a luxury!!! But it’s so nice 👍🏻
The experience here is stellar. The textures and flavors of their curries are spicy, complex, and addictively delicious. You feel like youre eating something really special and authentic compared to other restaurants in the neighborhood. Since the dishes arent greasy, the food almost feels healthier, too.Try the thali sets. I couldnt finish the whole thing, but I really wanted to. Love having this place nearby!
Amazing food one of the best Indian Ive had in the US. They list their quirks clearly on the menu (“no sharing”, “no returns”, “credit card surcharge”) so they’re not hiding that their service is not the typical “customer is always right” American standard.I will note that the older gentleman who is likely the owner can mix up orders or forget things so maybe ask him to repeat the order including the items in the thali to make sure you’re on the same page. We didn’t care too much when this happened because we live nearby and came again to try what we originally wanted but I can see how someone traveling could get disappointed not getting what they wanted to taste from the menu. Not cheap either but still worth it! Recommend the deluxe mumbai thali! Enjoy
The Food is excellent. The service and management are appalling. I had a terrible experience a while back but felt they deserve a second chance (as the food is excellent). From the moment you enter the place, they treat you like an unwelcome guest. They throw the menu at you and then disappear. They reappear after 20 minutes and take your order without exhibiting any politeness or respect. Then you have to wait for 40 minutes. After the food arrives, good luck if you they will stop by again to check in on anything. If you want to order anything else in the menu, you have to raise you hand or walk to the desk to request the server to come to your desk. When they finally come, it is with an irritated face. Again, you have to ask for the bill and wait for another 20 minutes. They give the bill and then disappear and you have to walk to the desk again to request to pay.The restaurant appears to be owned by the manager Anita who employs her family members to work there and they have zero training in hospitality. It seems they are genuinely unhappy to work there and would rather be somewhere else.It is such a pity because food is truly delicious and the prices are decent for Manhattan. I rarely write reviews, but was compelled to do so for the most terrible and appalling service I have ever encountered.
Edit 1 : The food is good but the service is always terrible in this place. Sometimes I spend more time waiting for people to attend me than actually eating.Edit 2 : Had another bad experience here where the manager was pretty rude when we just asked for a bit more sambar. Pretty much tried to belittle us.Had very good authentic Masala Dosa here. Pricing is on point too, about $10 for Masala Dosa. Definitely would recommend to anyone who is looking for South Indian food. Havent tried other stuff yet.
Good food. One of our group was gluten-free and that was no problem. South Indian cuisine (dosas, idli, etc). Better than others in nyc we have tried. Surprisingly not overpriced the way midtown restaurants often are. Not overly hot spicy which one of our group was disappointed by but reasonable for many Americans. The gunpowder dosas will live up to any need for spicy. Weve tried a few of their curries over the years but the dosas are where its at. The muligatawny soup is good too; the rasam soup is listed as being spicy and it really is. Still a good restaurant 5 years after our first visit. Consistently good.
We visited this place on a cold Christmas morning. We requested for a table for two and the guy just mumbled something and went away. There was an empty table but just didnt know what was happening. After another 10 mins another person came by and he told us we could sit at the same empty table if we wanted to.For food we ordered a mango Lassi, filtered coffee, idli vada combo, mysore Masala dosa and a rawa Masala dosa. Only thing memorable was the vada, Chutneys and the coffee rest were pretty mediocre. food I would say was a 3.5.Service, I had to remind them about the coffee and I could see other customers around suffering from the same ordeal.
This was my first visit to NYC. I am a pure vegetarian and I enjoy good food.I was suggested about A2B by my cousins who live here and we tried this restaurant. The experience was beyond expectations. The food is super amazing. The taste is authentic. Someone who is missing food from India will enjoy here extremely and might totally forget that they are having it in NYC.We ordered lot of food and every single dish was amazing. Everything has its own amazing flavour. It’s a must try restaurant for people who love South Indian food. Please go and checkout this amazing restaurant for super delicious food. You will not regret.
Excellent variety and portion sizes for the price. Plenty of vegan options. Dishes and ingredients were clearly explained on the menu. Comfortable seating with space between tables so you dont feel pushed up against the people next to you. I got the Paneer Masala Dosa and it was delicious.
Best place to eat in NYC for vegetarians. Sambhar was awesome. Tables are small for big groups or even for two if you settle down on a small table but all I care is about food and they rock at it. Wish uncle who serves or take orders smile once in a while. Make sure you ask for extra chutney and sambhar at the time of ordering or else it gets so busy they wont have time to get it later.
One of the worst dosas I have had. The manager was quite rude and the bill was surreal. Totally not worth the price. Would recommend Ganesh Dosa in Jersey City instead. We ordered three types of dosas, halwa and chilli paneer. Everything was disappointing apart from the halwa. Also worth noting, this has no affiliation and is nowhere even close to the India A2B. We learnt this from the owner himself. Avoid food from here at all costs, do not recommend.
Its a small restaurant but good food with good service. Im a regular there. The food is served fresh not microwaved, and in order to get fresh food you have to wait for it.Everything is made on the spot and i like the rave dosas there . To the guy(sekhar) who said the staff was rude ,dont lie. everyone was watching you throw insults at the waiter,i was there.the waiter was clearly explaining the time it takes to make the order . Respect people in order to receive respect.Dont write false statements, its kind of sad.And also the guy who arrived at the restaurant in break hours. The indian restaurants in city (especially downtown) have breaks. And you have no right to say when a restaurant should open and close.
Went here for dinner with my husband. We had the pav bhaji to start then my husband had the grilled thali and I had the aloo paratha set. Everything was delicious - pav bhaji was nicely buttery, crispy/soft textures of the dosa/idly/vada were all on point. Tomato chutney was very tasty too. My paratha took a bit longer to arrive, but it was crisp and even and had clearly been freshly made. We asked for filter coffees after our meal but they said they were out and gave us our bill. But then the waiter came by and gave us their very last filter coffee on the house! We did not find the service rude as some others have said and look forward to coming back here.
Zero Stars or actually Minus to the service. The host will take forever to find a spot for you, even if the whole restaurant is empty. And then give you the menu with least interest, and then timer starts, he will start chirping on your head “Ready to order?”, every minute. And please don’t dare to ask for any extra curry (which is mostly provided on request in any South Indian Restaurant) you will be judged as if you are not going to pay for any of the food. I read other reviews, saw owner getting offended and replying rudely, no wonder it’s the host himself or their family. But this is the truth, service is pathetic.
Its a place which serves south Indian cuisine. This place has outlets in NYC and a couple in NJ. Hands down, the one in Parsippany, NJ is way way better than the NYC one. I havent tried the one ok Edison yet.The food is quite affordable and for a complete meal you can estimate spending about $20-$30. Their thalis are also decently elaborate and my favorite is the bhavan thali which gives you a combination of the major food items that they serve. The filter coffee is a no-miss. It always takes me back to my days spent in Bangalore in India. (Make sure you tell them to make it strong if you like it strong, otherwise they make it quite low on coffee).I buy food all the time here, mostly for take outs. Apart from some rare occasions, Ive always enjoyed their food
Amazing place to have authentic southern Indian cuisine. Their food is freshly prepared and always tastes good. My favorite is Grill Rava masala dosa, its spicy. We got dahi vada for appetizers and loved their filter coffee. Coffee is strong and my favorite. Dahi vada is also very authentic. Great place to meet friends and/or to have weekend brunch!
When we called to make reservations, we specified a request for outdoor seating as our young children are still unvaccinated and they agreed. But when we got to the restaurant, they said they didn’t offer outdoor seating. My disappointed 8 year old son who loves South Indian food has insisted I write this review :)
I wouldnt dine again here. I got mislead by name. Franchise of same name in New Jersey is clean, has good service and food is of good quality. Service is poor here. The waiter tells me i ordered too much quantity for one!!! I told him I can eat please dont worry about it 😂 They dont give enough sambar and chutney. Ask extra they charge a cup of anything good money. Have to literally ask everything two times. Chole justed tasted like Tomato puree. Well i didnt want to order north Indian in south Indian branded restaurant perhaps at 8:30 they were not having South Indian Thali. They didnt give my card back with the receipt and I forgot too. Later when I called about it they were not helpful. BE CAREFUL. I agree with other bad reviews that the manager should NOT be in the service industry he has poor attitude.
I’ve been a huge fan of this restaurant and the food they serve. My last visit today was a little troubling. Our orders were messed up, a Diet Coke skipped altogether, and generally inconsistent in taste. I see the manager as a no-nonsense person, and I understand and respect that, but at the prices we’re paying, I’d expect to at least have our orders correct. Maybe I can count this as an off day, though I’m not too sure if I’d like to return anytime soon.
Bought Pav bhaji and samosa chat for dinner.Pav bhaji - stale and tasted wrong, and pav were like rubber.Samosa chat - the green chutney had excess food coloring - almost neon green.Order from here very frequently but very disappointed with the food quality today.Communicated with the host; who seemed defensive.
We were there for lunch, party of 5. The manager was extremely arrogant, rude, impolite and crass in his behavior from the minute we walked in and throughout our time there. Once we were done, we asked for the owner Anita’s contact info to provide feedback, and he refused to give us the info and got more rude and started ranting. What a lousy experience. Some of the staff were impolite as well. We would recommend staying away. This guy should not be in any hospitality business, he is just plain miserableUpdated edit to earlier review: saw your response, how is calling someone my friend anything but polite? Our review stands as posted. Over 100+ plus negative reviews about the manager and establishment confirms our experience about him being disrespectful, condescending and belittling customers. Unacceptable in this business, period. Consider this place at your own risk. See all reviews and all will be clear
Let’s see. This restaurant has a great name back in Chennai so we thought of giving it a try. So 5 stars to begin with. It’s a mile from our hotel so we walked there around 3 pm. When you enter you have to write the name and address and they check your temperature. So still good. But the tables were definitely not 6 feet apart or with any partitions so I would have preferred little more apart but with restrictions loosening I guess it’s not a big deal. Now let’s go to the food.We ordered:Mango Lassi - 5/5Poori with masala - 1/5 - it was confusing. Generally im used to having small pooris with aloo masala. In USA I am seeing pooris are huge. But problem was with the masala. Generally it’s always aloo masala. If you have something else, mention it on the menu. Anyways I didn’t know what was vegetable masala. The aloo masala was actually the masala you put inside the dosa. It didn’t have any taste. This was a total waste.Butter masala dosa - it was good 4/5So food in average was 3 starThey had too much restrictions as to one card per table, extra surcharge on credit cards which inconveniences customers. So taking out one star.So in total I would give 2 stars.
Food is delicious and unique, bringing the south Indian cuisine to the heart of midtown. Prices are reasonable. There are plenty of gluten free options as well. Service is quite terrible though. They insist you cant share several of the dishes, despite them not being refilled or anything of the sort. They also refuse to accept more than one credit card to split the bill. Even getting an extra napkin wasnt easy.
Today we went out to have a nice South Indian Meal at Adyar Anand Bhavan , it was such a disaster ! The manager was so rude and had an terrible attitude according me he is fit to be working in the hospitality business . I come from Tamil Nadu and have actually eaten at Adyarv Anand Bhavan Chennai and the waiters and managers there are so polite and courteous! Unfortunately we had such a terrible experience I would definitely not go backthere !! In the end the worse thing was my friend did not have anything to eat because the manager totally messed up our order and was the least apologetic ! He had such a bad attitude !!Edit oneresponse to the owners response !!Well I have read your response and I feel that clearly your manager is playing you ! He does not write down orders does not repeat orders and he does have a very bad attitude and as for asking for a discount we did not !! it’s in fact the restaurants responsibility and courtesy to compensate for a screw up from your end ! You clearly are not wanting to own up to your mistakes and trying to be aggressive and blaming your customers !! You are also responding aggressively to their reviews and claiming that all the customer reviews are false !! I think you have a terrible attitude and you have no intentions of wanting to improve your service !!
What a terrible experience! All the 100+ negative reviews mention rude staff, and horrible temper of the guy at Adyar. I had the same terrible experience with the management..Ive ordered from this restaurant via Uber a couple of times and each experience has been problematic. Either they substitute your order with something thats available or simply not replace anything without your permission. Online ordering at this restaurant has been a terrible experience.Edited after reading response from restaurant: I received your call today and you were rude. Yep! My experience was no different from other 100s of other reviewers. Better luck next time!
It was my first visit to Adyar Ananda Bhavan, NY. And it has turned out to be a worst one. I am a Tamizhan and went to that restaurant with various expectations (primarily hospitality). As soon as we entered, we were received by man who had unenthusiastic and irritable face. It looked like he does not want us to be in the restaurant. We had ordered Ravai dosa and Vada. We received our food after an hour. We patiently waited and started eating and asked for extra Chutney. It took another 15 minutes. He brought a chutney and he did not even ask if we wanted that chutney or some other chutney. He did not even ask if we need anything else.I would say this is the THE WORST SERVICE that I ever seen in my USA life.
Horrible experience of waiting over 20 min for coffee. The place was not crowded at all and the staff super rude , does not acknowledge orders , most importantly dirty tables . Had to tell them to wipe it down . Was utterly disgusted to eat at this dirty place . Save your bucks and go to saravana bhavan for amazing service and food . And they charge extra $1.50 for card payment which they don’t even tell you about
-1 stars for false marketing i.e. copying the name of original restaurant chain i.e. A2B ( Adyar Ananda Bhavan). Copying names can confuse a customer. With that said, the food here is very good. The dosas are nice and crispy and the accompanying sambhar has an authentic taste.
The food was decent with a lot of selection on the menu. The bill for 4 people came out to a bit over $100, which isnt pricey. My main issue with Indian cuisine is the names are all in Indian language so the sub-descriptions really need to be more informative. The waiter was nice and he really tried but when we asked for more description about the entrees, he basically repeated what the menu said, which didnt really tell us much. The other issue we had was, not really knowing what the food is about, wed expect a good waiter to tell us when what we ordered was enough or too much. And that didnt happen and we way over-ordered and had a lot left on the table at the end of the meal.Id still go back to this place, being a little better informed about it. The food was delicious.
The food here is decent and I like their paneer. But the decency ends just about there. When me and my friend went to the place, the waitstaff was cleaning the table next to us after a big group left and proceeded to give us the jug of left over water from the table that he was cleaning. He just took the jug right from that table he was wiping and put it on our table like there was no problem. Also we had to wait quite a bit for our food, even, our appetizer, to the point that made us wonder if they had just forgotten about us. The place is understaffed(by rather inattentive staff) and not run very efficiently. Also I wanted to share some of my food with my friend so asked for a small bowl and a spoon. The waitstaff had such a hard time understanding that simple request. I wasnt sure if he was not capable of communicating or if he just didnt care. Maybe both. I think there are better options for Indian food that has far better service. I will not be returning here.
How is the rating at ONLY 4.2?! This place stands out amongst allllll NYC veg eateries! & it says a lot when the 2 tables around you are all repeat, regular customers. The food is on point-wonderful & authentic flavours, fresh & healthy. I would highly recommend the South Indian thali. Get to gorge on 8-10 different items and definitely feel very full but also content. The staff was very friendly, quick, and extremely attentive. No complaints! Def going again.
This place has the most non corteous restaurant staff ever in all of NYC. Not even once were we greeted nicely or attended attentively. We had to ask for refill for water, sambar n chutney by calling their number as the waiter would stay out of sight consistently. They even charge us for transaction fees incurred by them for accepting credit cards on the check. Their idli, sambar n chutney were tasty but the mysore rava was too thick and crispy.
Terrible customer service. The restaurant was almost empty in the evening around 5 pm but waiter hardly paid any attention. He was only interested towards larger groups. The man even did not provide us the sugar too with tea. I would suggest the management to put board Minimum $20/25 must be purchased or similar. The best part is the quality of the food was really good. However, it is a bit over priced. Considering the staff behavior and price I will recommend any body to travel few station by subway to Jackson Heights for cheaper food with good customer service.
Beware, this is not the original Adyar Ananda Bhavan. The restaurant was totally understaffed and the service was poor too.We ordered dosas and parottas. The dosas were good but they served us the frozen parottas which was very hard and tasted bad. Please avoid this place!
We keep coming back to this place because the food is awesome - freshly cooked, vegetarian and just tasty. The service, unlike what other people write, is really good. One point to note - there are always many Indians eating here. That goes to tell you how good the food is!
Just can’t find anything to complain. The food is insanely delicious and is authentic.Got the South Indian Thali, great way to end a long day with a satisfying, filling and delicious meal.I was able to finish my Thali, it was a flavorful experience.simply the best Indian food I had in the past 6yrs.
Location 9/10Service 2/10Food taste 5/10Cleanliness 6/10Ambience 4/10Posting a one star review because the dosa I ordered was cold. it was not made fresh after they took my order. The lady at the reception was yelling at a customer on phone. I dont know what was going on but the words she used disturbed me. I couldnt enjoy the food. I would suggest being little more polite with the customers.
Food was great! Disappointed with the service. The host was bordering on rude to disinterested in welcoming guests. Any question about the food was met with either a snappy response or a rude head shake with no. Almost felt like he didnt want us there! And the host, for some reason, is always saving open tables that are together in anticipation of a large party of 8.
This is our favorite spot in the neighborhood for dining out. We are a non-Indian couple who have tried a lot of the citys best offerings for Indian cuisine and this place is among the best for South Indian food. They never fail in quality, flavor, and service. They have a variety of Dosas as well as the standard curries and entrees. On the weekend, they also have a couple Indo-Chinese dishes that do not disappoint.
Absolutely awful service and the food was below average. We were a party of 5 and were seated with a pole in between despite requesting an empty nearby larger seat. The server gave us 5 plates in hand to self serve and finally when we asked for a to go box, they gave us one box for multiple things without a bag. It just seemed no one was interested in being there. The decor inside was unpleasant as well.
The staff are rather unfriendly and rude, the service can be very slow and cold food is brought to the table after the wait. This is a service industry, I wish the staff would be nice and welcoming instead of cold and indifferent. Food is ok but certainly not the best. Anyone who knows good authentic South Indian food will say they are not very good.
I like the food here but the service is a joke. For some reason they always try to seat customers at tables directly next to each other even when there are other tables available. One time I was dining there and a large group came in and wanted to sit where my partner and I were seated. The server just stood over us until we left even before our plates were cleared or the check was even on the table. We had to go up to the cashier to pay since we got kicked out of our table.Go in with low expectations.(I fully expect the owner to comment on this based on the other reviews. Maybe that’ll give you a sense of what the service is like and you’ll get a good laugh out of it.)
Nope dont even bother coming here. While the food is okayish and nothing great the service is terrible!!! The management clearly needs to hire more people and definetly needs more restaurant etiquette and be more courteous!! Not shrugging their shoulders when asked how long would the wait be so that we can decide whether that will work for us or not.The waiter is absolutely rude and surprisingly take allergy concerns very lightly!! So be extremely careful if you are allergic to any dairy/nuts.
Oct 2021 update - speed of service is terribly slow and they charge some 3% surcharge for credit card payments. Most of the food is still delicious. Best Idly, Medu vada, masala vada and dosa in town.2015- Tasty Authentic Chennai food. This is a branch of the Adyar Anand Bhavan chain in Chennai. The quality is almost as good as back in Chennai, the vada sambar & coffee especially were excellent! We found this clearly better than Saravana Bhavan down in Lexington Ave. Two thumbs up !!
The food was excellent! Some of the best South Indian food Ive tried in and around New York. Everything I ordered was delicious. We had idlis, thayer vadas, bisi bele bhat and some dosas. I especially liked the sambar at this place, something that I dont usually like anywhere. Will definitely be going back.
Surprisingly good. the decor and attitude of the servers had us thinking twice but the food was great. i didnt think id get to eat real indian food in NYC, but i was proven wrong.place can definitely use a revamp tho, very gloomy.servers did their jobs well, just a bit stiff.i would love to go again if in the city!
Barbaric, aggressive and unfair owner. Mediocre food, not worth the headache. Paid for meal that we did not eat, then refused service.I came here to share a meal with my grandparents who were visiting from out-of-country. I was told an additional 20% sharing charge would apply as we only ordered one main (for my grandparents to share as the food is too heavy for me) and three coffees. I told the owner that this is unacceptable and I offered to pay the sharing charge anyway but I would post an extremely negative review. I guess this really upset the owner, who then refused to serve us and created a big scene at the restaurant which comprised of yelling. Multiple people witnessed this - unbelievable, disgusting, cheap behavior. For some reason, the owner accused us of being cheap and threatening (we only threatened to post a negative review), but neither we, nor anyone at the restaurant, understood this. In addition, I still paid for the meal (even though we did not eat it) out of politeness. I am confident others that witnessed this incident will post. What surprised me was his own waiters were shocked at the owners behavior. The owner and his daughter are extremely rude, aggressive and barbaric. They are not fit to run a restaurant. Also, the owner deleted my previous review (not sure how?).EDIT - in response to the owners response: I am not making any false statements nor accusing your waiters of being disrespectful (there were plenty of witnesses to the contrary). I am accusing you of being disrespectful.
Place for good South Indian food. I’ll not call authentic but ok. I liked the Tamil songs played which brings sweet memories. I tried Idli Vada combo and bisibhela bath. Both ok. Rose milk was good but I think made with 2% milk. I prefer it thick like in India but can’t complain as most of Indian restaurants make that way. Overall decent food experience.
Great for Dosas as well as North Indian food (Malai Kofta was a winner for those who want a creamy non-spicy curry) at low prices. Service could use a little sharpening at times, and decor leaves much to be desired, but overall definitely a reliable vegetarian spot in the neighborhood.
I come to Adyar frequently and bring my family and friends here too. As a South Indian I appreciate the decor and the food. Their rava dosa is particularly delicious, as is the pav bhaji. However, like everyone else has mentioned, the service is terrible and the wait staff is notoriously non accommodating. However, in my opinion, it’s worth it if you’re not in a rush, not particular about service, and are just having a non negotiable craving for South Indian delicacies.
Good Indian restaurant. The food is generally good, but the service was not great. We asked for a tea and a coffee which was supposed to be given at the end of the meal, but that never showed up. The bigger issue was that it was listed in the bill although it was not served. When we asked it to be removed, the manager did not I provide a corrected check. I had to ask him multiple times before he provided the correct check.
This restaurant specializes in south Indian food, which, while not a cuisine I have much experience with, is now officially one of my favorites due to this restaurants incredible food. Definitely try the dhosas, which they will fill with this wonderful, silky potato mixture for you and serve with a number of dipping sauces. Be sure to go with an empty stomach--you wont be disappointed.
Absolutely love this place. Ever since A2B opened, we stopped going to Sarvana Bhavan. A2Bs food is delicious.Ive tried a bunch of dishes here, including my favorite fried idly and onion and chilli rava masala dosa.I noticed in our recent visit to A2B, the portion of masala had gone down, but it was actually perfect! I wish the dosas were priced at $11.95 instead of $13.95, so yes, definitely a little expensive.I read a lot of negative reviews regarding service, but on all our visits, weve never had any negative experience with their service. Service was good and I hope it remains that way!
We went last Saturday to the NYC restaurant. Very friendly staff excellent food and good portion. We had ordered Rava Masala Dosai, Chenna Bhatura, South Indian Thali etc ExcellentI have gone to NJ branch too before but I will never go there againTheir staff are always looking frazzled and the condiments are so little and the waiters will not come to your table to check
One of the worst experiences I have ever had in a restaurant. The person in charge is extremely rude both to the employees and to the guest. For a mediocre quality of food it sure does have a sense of air which is unexplainable. Apart from abysmal treatment the food in itself is overpriced and cuts corners when it comes to flavour. It wouldnt be far from the truth to say this is a big botch when it comes to indian or south Indian cuisines.
Delicious food, just what I was craving! We got Pav Bhaji, Bhel Puri & the Bhavan Thali which included an Idli, a Vada, Masala Dosa, Utthapam, chutneys, sambar & dessert. Every single thing was perfectly cooked, presented and tasted wonderful, just as it should. It would have been better to get 1 more toasted Pav in the Pav Bhaji, and maybe a Pav for the Vada. The service was quite slow, even to start off with though the restaurant at the time was only at 30% capacity. However it became completely full by the time wed finished so I got up and went over to the till to ask for the check, refill my water, and to eventually pay, which I was totally fine with. Our server was still very nice and substituted the dessert of the day for the one I wanted - Ras Malai, which was also yummy. Lastly we got Masala Chai & Mango Lassi, both very tasty too. And to finish off, theres the classic sauf at the till to take in hand and cleanse the palate. Very authentic, just right, will be returning lots! Reasonable too :)
Food is good. Service not quite. Decor is surprisingly better than most similar indian restaurant. They had a nice nook for larger group but was misused for stacking washed utensils and admin. The place gets busy but they are still short staffed...typical of indian restaurants.
Nice Restaurant with wide South Indian food options, loved the taste and chutneys that came with Mix vegetable uttapam. One can enjoy the food while listening to South Indian music in background. The server was not much enthusiastic. Filter coffee was okayish. Would prefer Saravana Bhavan over this somehow.
I recently went to Adyar Ananda Bhavan at New Jersey. After going there I doubt the authenticity of the New York hotel branch. The ambience, taste and most importantly customer service at new jersey were excellent. this branch is of low grade. I would recommend driving an hour more to New Jersey location to enjoy best taste.
As a frequent patron of the original Adyar Ananda Bhavan in Chennai, I was disappointed to find that this place is merely a name ripoff and not associated with the authentic Indian chain. Food may be acceptable from the perspective of a tourist but this is nowhere near the original, in taste or menu offerings.
Three friends and I had lunch here at 12:30 pm on a Sunday. This place is small and has some character and a lovely exposed brick wall on one side. When you walk in, obviously there are strong aromas of South Indian cooking. The service was a bit slow as the restaurant was crowded. But the food was delicious and plentiful! I tried the idli-vada combo: I have to say its the best Ive had in the US. The vada was not oily, nor was it heavy (an error that I find at most other South Indian joints). The idli was large and had just enough of the fermentation taste and aroma. Next, I had one of their dosas. It was brought out in a large steel thali with four indentations in the thali that carried 3 different types of chutneys and sambar. I loved the dosa as well as the chutneys and there was plenty of chutney to go with the large dosa. I have to say that I make better sambar at home, but their sambar is good -- just not as good as mine. The only reason I take away 1 star is due to the slow service -- friendly, but slow. Bon appetit!
This place was a big surprise for me. I was originally skeptical to go to a vegetarian place but I found all the dishes so extremely tasty that made me curious to try more. So I will definitely go back! The place is quite simple, so nothing fancy or romantic but the service was good and fast.
The food is delicious and I keep going back for more despite the fact that that one waiter/manager that others have mentioned in their comments is as terrible as they say. He looks like we are making him pay for our food with his 401K . He on many occasions has overcharged us. Now my experience is incomplete without him there. I’ve seenHR reps look more cheerful than he does on a Friday night. And if you really want to see fireworks then try asking for extra Sambhar and watch him internally combust.
Service by the man over here is HORRIBLE. He is extremely RUDE. This is not the first time, every single time he is rude and disrespectful. After coming to a restaurant, you expect polite, kind service. Food is great here but I am afraid to come back. I have been TOLERATING his horrible service for years just because of the food, but its NOT WORTH IT. Request the management to change this person. You will lose loyal customers like us this way.
Well,i cant really complain about the food as such. Keeping aside the chutneys , which appears to have been served directly out from the fridge, the dosas and meduvadas were made fresh. What Canadians especially need to be wary about is the pricing. For 4 x ghee dosas, 3x kids dosas, 2 x medu vada plates , 4 x coffees you would end up paying 149 USD, which is roughly 200 CAD.
Weve tried quite a few South Indian restaurants in both Manhattan and Queens and this is hands down the best one by far. Much better service and food than Saravanaa Bhavan / other Curry Hill alternatives and almost as cheap as Dosa Delight and other Flushing options. Dont let the nondescript exterior keep you away from this gem of an Indian restaurant.
The worst customer care ever!!! I was always skeptical of the not at all friendly manager (this one time he legit yelled at me for not picking up my phone. The reason was because the food I ordered was ready earlier though I specifically asked for late pickup. I just dont pick up calls from random numbers). However, the quality of the food kept making me go back to this place, though after my experience two weeks ago, I am severing my ties with this place for good. They made us wait for 20mins though they said it wont exceed 5. Then, on the bill, they added 18% gratuity for a party of 4 (thank God my husband noted this as I almost signed my bill after tipping another 20%). I mean who pre-adds gratuity for a party of 4! Then, thats not all, there is an extra 4% charge for payment using credit card. And these details are written in a flier that is kept in the restaurant that one has to literally use a microscope to read. And the reason behind that they are can still maintain low prices doing so. I disagree to this, as they are not that low priced and if you really want to go cardless say it explicitly!!!!!
If you are in the upper 50s on the east side, there are very few South Indian food options at your disposal. So when you are in the mood for a dosa, chances are this place is your best bet.I dont mind restaurants charging $10+ for a dosa provided it tastes like the stuff from back home. The ones they serve over here are not bad but are some ways off in terms of the authentic taste. Also, Sambar is one of the less tastier ones Ive had in the city. The food quality is still pretty decent to satisfy your taste buds for when you just gotta have a dosa and are stuck on the east side of New York.
One liner, its a perfect place for south indian foods. I would have given ratings between 3.5 but cant do it here hence its a 3.Perfecto dosa, uthapam, Idli, wada will make your lunch or dinner really tasty. The Sambar and chutneys are too good as well. Ratings cut because of,Couple of times we had the coconut chutney smelled bad, it has the mustiness. Some chutneys werent fresh.Service is a little slow.Interiors doesnt look a lot cleaner.
Authentic (almost as good as a good restaurant food I have had in India) South Indian food, like dosa, idly sambar and others. Although I cannot say the same for North Indian. But be sure to try out. There are still tons of flavors and great food to explore from different parts of India.
A Indian Restaurant for South Indian cuisine. We had idli which was ok. Upma usually is dry but this was wet , but had an authentic taste with southern flavors. Rava Masala and Onion Rava Masala dosas were good. The main staple Sambhar was bland and not up to South Indian standards.
Food was always good. Staff was very okay. Today was the worst. Was supposed to open at 11.30. Me and my 3year old son were waiting an extra 10mins in the freezing cold. He saw us but didn’t open. I called at 11.42 to ask him how long he’ll open in. He came, opened the door and said he can open anytime he wants to.Left right away with a crying kid who wanted to eat dosa.please change your staff.
Horrible experience. We ordered a ghee dosa and tea. The server got the dosa within thirty seconds of us ordering. It was cold, perhaps returned by someone else. The server carelessly kept the plate on the table with the dosa brushing against the wall on the side. On pointing these things to him, he did not replace the dosa.
Went for a date night. We ordered a thali and a dosa--this was way too much food. We could have easily just split the thali between us and had a lovely $17 meal.Every part of the thali was delicious, from the korma to the kheer. The chai was fly. The dosa was scrumptious.Small and excellent restaurants like this are hard to come by. Give them a try!
Its a shame that such places dont appear in the results when you search for vegetarian/vegan food, google always point to upscale and American style food. This place and food is not only for the folks who are looking for South Indian food but also for the folks who wants to enjoy a delicious and non expensive food in a non pretentious setting.
Rude behavior by the staff - made to wait for half hour for a simple dosa.Even the one star is over rated - with a follow on stupid commentary from the young guy in the restaurant trying to defend his cook, the guy was absolutely rude who doesn’t understand what Service means.
Food was good but service was Pathetic. Highly disappointed with the service especially travelling specially from 1 hr away to this place. The so called in charge was very unprofessional when we entered around 8.45. We didnt feel welcomed and reluctantly had to bear the bad treatment . Food was not disappointing but was not out of the world. I would really hesitate to go there again because of the customer service. I only hope they improve the service especially being a reputed name.
A disgusting restaurant: no matter how good or bad the food is,decent respectful behavior with the customer is a must. The owner and his staff cannot comprehend the basic functionality of running a restaurant. A old couple along with their grandson were insulted, to say the least, for sharing a very okay-ish dosa. We were then questioned for following basic human courtesy. All in all a very terrible experience.PS: Mr.Owner I see you threatening folks with a legal notice, you can go ahead and do so. We will be more than happy to get one. (And we are not the friends with the grandkid who just wanted his grandparents to have a peaceful meal, but the people sitting next to him and watching the circus that you created)
1) This is NOT the A2B chain of restaurant2) They take forever to serve ( We had to spend 2 hours there)3) The food is not authentic South Indian (Basmati rice and fruit custard in South Indian Thali?!)4) They try to reduce the cost as much as possible even in the ingredients used. (Poriyal was provided for name sake, dessert was pathetic, Sambar was ok)5) Except Poori size all quantities were very less ( Only half a cup for all curries. Rice was also less).6) Coffee was also average.7) Price is same as that of Saravanaa BhavanOverall it’s average food. Any day I would walk into Saravanaa Bhavan for some authentic South Indian food.
We went with a family with 2 kids. The owner basically said all four adults and 2 kids have to sit in a table for four. We were basically insulted and he asked “how many tables will you occupy?” He could have asked politely for us to sit in one table. I don’t think he would have done this to any other national. The other option he provided was basically near the kitchen where it was very hot.
One of my favorite south-indian spots. Have tried their dosas and idlis that were both pretty good. Their South Indian thalis are also delicious (good luck finishing it by yourself). If you like south-indian food and have already tried the usual suspects around Lexington do give this one a try!
...on one of the most peaceful avenues of Manhattan...Real authentic south Indian taste with dosas and uttapams along with everything else. Service can be better which stopped me from giving a 5th star. Sambhar has a taste which most of the folks would like. Give yourself more time (for the service) if you are visiting
This has got to be one of my favorite restaurants, for dining in, or delivery. I love the Royal Mumbai Thali. The saag paneer is one of my favorites they have. I think I enjoy everything there. The mulligawtany soup is yummy. The coconut rice woof, I could eat this for days. The Thalis are a nice way to try a bunch of dishes, since it comes with small portions of a few. The one that I frequently order comes with Chana Masala (Chickpeas), Saag Paneer (cream spinach with Cheese cubes), papadum (lentil cracker), Yellow Lentil Daal, Chapati (leaven bread), house special rice, white basmati rice, Raita (cucumber yogurt), and hot beverage (tea or coffee) and dessert. It is all so good and a lot of food that is shareable. The idli is also very good.Again this is one of my favorite restaurants, it hits all the flavor points for me, and the awesome side is that there is no meat. I brought a friend who eats meat with every meal and he thoroughly enjoyed himself.Good stuff.Namaste.
Chose this place for a late dinner last night. The food was tasty enough but I got a sour stomach from it. I began feeling ill within an hour of eating. Maybe it had something to do with the roach that ran by under the table next to mine (just as we were going to leave of course) I obviously can’t eat here again
Worst south Indian I ever had in NewYork. All the dishes are over priced and worst preparation. They were not taking order we were giving, and insisting to order something else. Where the same dish they served to other customers. Staff is so rude. Not recommended at all.
Come here for South-Indian food. Its brand new and not Americanized yet which keeps it authentic for now. They have a plethora of dosa/uttapam options.Food is just ok. We ordered mini idlis expecting the idlis to be immersed in sambar, but were disappointed. They serve the idlis is a congested small bowl with little sambar.Coffee here is the best, similar to the Madras coffees you get in India. They really need to work on their service or make this a take-out place!
Average food compared to South Indian food experiences across the globe and USA...however one of the better options in NYC...have had more delicious meals and dosa...the masala was not spicy...I had to learn cooking rather than spending on having what I did not fully enjoy...sorry my bar is high...all the best!!!
Food is good but Customer service is bad. They got our food late, and when we got upset, insted of apologizing Manager or may be manager woman in front came and said do not raise your voice. It not very good feeling for Customer. I hope they improve thair service. I am not going back there again.
Amazing food. Okay okay service. But the south indian MANAGER was very RUDE and unprofessional. When asked for a to go box for left over, he said u cannot take extra chatni. Then wen told him again need a box he got aluminium foil piece saying we cannot give box. Worst is the other good manager gave a box to us 10 mins before for another to go and didnt give 2nd box for separate to go. Not worth the service. Only worth the food.
WORST customer service. Food taste comes after that! Unfortunately we have been hospitalized to take care of our daughter and forced to order food nearby. We made about $400 order to this place within a month. Everytime an order is placed they take a delivery fee even after that they expect TIPS for delivering food which takes more than an HOUR to deliver! (It is jus 0.6 miles away) We offer tips for almost all the delivery and on a time when we questioned why they are charging delivery fee as well as tips they wantedly miss an item that is been ordered. When we call and recheck the manager rudely says that you dont provide the tip then you dont expect correct order as well! As far as tips are concerned it shouldnt be FORCED! And she says its out of delivery area and tips are expected.I dont understand:1. If the delivery (which is 0.6 miles) is out of area why it is been listed for ordering to the address!2. If they expect tips why do they charge delivery fee Everytime!3. And wantedly if they plan to miss items from the order what SERVICE they are providing to the CUSTOMERS!Above all If you call and ask about the missed item on the order they just ignore you and say they DONT WANT any customer who doesnt give tips! In NYC, LOTS of food deliveries happen without delivery fee as well as tips and they deliver much longer distances as well! Wake up A2B! Come on be sensible where you should expect tips and try to be honest with your order. Dont run the business only for money earn CUSTOMERS RESPECT first. Totally PISSED OFF & writing this review in dismay!!!
The food is delicious but I am giving only three stars because the staff is rude and service is super slow. After waiting for a long time for our order..we asked the staff (black uniform), how long will it take..he said very rudely that he is not the cook so he does not know...Adyar is my go to place for dosa but the service is always a disappointment...

2022-04-02Great food! Hands down the best Indian on the UES if you are vegetarian/very vegan friendly and they even offer Gluten Free & Nut Free options. However, the service is extremely slow and almost non-existent.Also they have weird quirks like an extra charge for using credit card, no sharing and take out is $1 extra charge for containers.Hence taking down 1 star from my review.Even with their weird quirks, the food is so delicious and since I live in the neighborhood, I keep going back.Just don’t expect 5 star service and bring cash. Their food is so good that you will forget the bad service and their weird quirks.

2022-06-21Second time at Adyar Ananda Bhavan and had an excellent meal. For appetizers we shared idli and vada combo and it was delicious. For mains we got ghee masala dosa and rava onion chilli dosa. Both were excellent. We asked for some dosa podi on the side (gun powder masala mixed with ghee). Way better than Saravana Bhavan. Enjoyed our meal.

2022-06-17I will not recommend going here. I went during my office lunch break at 12 noon as it is scheduled to open then. They did not open until 12.12PM and we had to stand outside in the scorching sun. After requesting them twice, they let us in.If you have been to india, you’d know it’s not a customer friendly country and this is one such example of how they are bringing this culture abroad.Food is good👍🏻

2022-04-10Wide variety of south-indian dosas, authentic chutneys and sambar. Quantity worth the price and fulfiling. Auto-included 15% gratuity in our check (group of 4).

2022-06-21Food was really delicious, real good authentic south indian food. The place was smaller in size than I expected(its in NYC, thats expected). I would say the A2B in NJ was slightly better both food and ambience wise. But if NJ is not an option a definite must go.

2021-08-31Not sure how I lucked out but I received excellent service. Thankfully didn’t deal with the rude staff that others have written about. I’d never had dosa before and wasn’t sure what to expect. Selected one with potato and came with four sides. Huge crispy pancake or crepe like tortilla device and absolutely loved it. Was a wonderful vegetarian meal and supplemented with a nice warm tea that I also really enjoyed.

2022-04-03The food quality and taste was good. The staff, particularly, the main waiter was extremely rude and unfriendly. The service is very slow. He was not willing to listen to what we wanted to say. We wanted to give a partial order first but he said you take your time and give the complete order.. Not the best of experience in our trip to New York.
