Afghan Kebab House in other cities:
The best rice I have ever had anywhere! Try the combo kebab and their black tea with Afghani spices and you wont be disappointed. The owner is very passionate about this place and is meticulous about your overall experience here. Sisterly theyve been open for 32 years and have never served any alcohol. So, bring your own booze.
Simply amazing. Home feel ambiance and friendly staff. My wife and I order lamb and chicken plates. Both of them were very tasty. In my case what I completely loved was the rice. Made with pistachos and orange zest. I can’t begin to explain the flavor. It was our first time trying Afghan cuisine and loved it. Please, give them a visit.
I live in Texas and whenever my family goes to New York this is the top spot on our to do list. My mom lived in New York for 10 years and Afghan Kebab house was her favorite restaurant. Ismir is so incredibly sweet and amazing at what he does. I dream about the chicken kebab’s and rice at night. Can’t wait to visit New York again soon so I can enjoy Afghan Kebab.
I regret not taking pictures of the delicious dishes my friend and I ordered. Everything was fantastic. Service & food 👍🏻👍🏻 thanks to owner Esmar. He is quick to greet you with a smile so warm you can feel it through the mask. Also no problem accommodating my gluten allergy because a large part of the menu is naturally gluten free.
This restaurant is a treasure and a true NYC institution. The owner Izmar has been in business for 30+ years and for good reason. He sources the best quality meat, takes his time to prepare it flawlessly (based on his grandmother’s recipes!), and the result is a deeply satisfying meal. He is also a kind and generous man who cares deeply about his restaurant and community. If you are looking for a delicious, authentic dining experience, stop reading and make your way to 71st street and 2nd Ave. It’s also BYOB so bring a special bottle of wine. This kind of place is truly what makes NYC great.
I am really happy to see this place is still open despite the pandemic! The food here is delicious and the owner is always so wonderful and warm. Service is always great and its BYOB!This place IS OPEN FOR DINE-IN. Not sure why Google will not update this, but THEY ARE OPEN INSIDE! As it warms up, Im sure theyll have their outdoor seating, but since NY weather is unpredictable, if you want a cozy spot and great kebabs, this is the place to be.Support our small businesses!
Open for dine-in! Have been coming here for years. Everything is authentic and tasteful - from the décor to the food to the people. Meet the owner and hell make you feel at home. Ask for recommendations, but you cant go wrong - the kebabs, the half-spiced chicken, the rice dishes...everything is delicious. Highly recommend.
I ordered some kebabs and the chicken korma from here based on the 5 star reviews on Seamless. I found the food to be mediocre at best. No spice or flavor to the kebabs compared to what I have had in London. One of my favorite restaurants in London is an Afghani chain called K.O., Kebabish Original and it is unbelievably delicious. I was hoping for something similar here in NYC, but havent found anything remotely close to it yet unfortunately. You gotta go to London if you want real, delicious Afghani food in the Western world.
I came during off hours and was delighted by the décor and good service. The food was perfect. It is hard to describe how spinach can be perfect but it was... absolutely perfect. The lamb was delicious and the Afghan custard was incredible. I highly recommend this restaurant. They are very professional and deliver high-quality in every way.
This place is fantastic. First of all, you can bring your own bottle (BYOB). Second, the appetizer are more than great! They have a quite nice selection of afghan dumplings, bolance, which are great. Finally, the main dishes are delicious. I tried the lamb and chicken, both were great. Highly recommend.
The restaurant is above average but there is nothing special about it. Inside, they have nice decor ... traditional afghani art and wall hangings throughout. Before I get to the food, let me talk about the service. We went their during lunch time. The host gave us a mediocre welcome and was quite most of the time. He was not rude but wasnt pleasant either. He brought the appetizers and just put it on our table, didnt say a word like here are you appetizers, do you need any sauce? ... nothing like that.I liked the basmati rice .. the grains were thick and separate. The chicken (thats what we ordered) was okay. Nothing special about the sauce either. Without the sauce, its a bit bland. In short, below average service, above average food. But nothing amazing.
Worst and most rude service I have ever experienced in my life! From all my restaurants I’ve been to I have never been yelled at by the server/owner. We had a table of 5 with 3 elderly people from out of town and 1 who’s first experience with afghan food. We ordered 3 entrees and 5 sides, 3 pots of tea and 3 desserts. After our order the owner snatched the menu from my mothers hand and yelled - only 3 entrees for 5 people! We were shocked at the rudeness and would have walked out then if it wasn’t later on te and too much trouble to find another reservation at the time. The server /owner was cold the rest of the night. We couldn’t request someone else bc he’s the only one that works there. We had to ask for orders that never came and for the complimentary bread. We are an Arab Muslim family and couldn’t help but notice the racism as he was treating the other white customers kindly with better treatment and knew he would never talk and yell like that to his white customers. Never again!
Got a pick up of our familys favorites from the Afgan Kebab House tonight, where we have been eating for many years, at the request of my son, for his 30th Birthday. Everything we ordered was well-prepared and made for an excellent dinner that we enjoyed in our own dining room.
I first came across this place when I was in NYC for a few months in 2002 for work and lived in midtown. I mostly had my food delivered but also ate in a few times. When I came back to NYC permanently for a few years (2004-2009) this was one of my favourite spots. The food is delicious and I found the service quite good. I introduced a number of colleagues and friends to this place and whenever I am in NYC I try to go there and eat at least once during my trip.
Despite reading the bad reviews, I bought my girlfriend here for dinner a couple days back, we absolutely loved it! The owner, Ismar, takes his restaraunt very seriously (he’s been in business for 37+ years for a very good reason) and it’s apparent through not only his food, but also his customer service. That goes for his staff too. I would take the negative reviewers here with a grain of salt and give the place a chance. Sure, it’s a tad on the pricy side (it’s Manhattan afterall), but I’m sure you’ll find it to be worthwhile. I’ll definitely be going back! I’d highly recommend the marinated lamb chops!
Food is good but it can barely compensate for the terribly slow service. There is only one waiter (possibly the owner) and one busser. They are the same people. The waiter also cleans the tables. From being seated to paying the check it too 1 hr and half. All we ordered was an appetizer and two entrees in a restaurant that was half full. Ridiculous. The owner fundamentally misunderstands how to run a restaurant.
Always the best meal and one I look forward to every time I return to NYC! I lived around the corner from 1992-2002 and ate there 2-3 times a week. Of all the fancy and high priced meals I enjoyed all over NYC this was always my favorite one!! Love you Izmar!! I send all my friends that visit NYC to The Afghan Kabob House. The only thing that would make it better is if he moved to Texas and opened the restaurant here!!
To be quite frank the food is ok. I believe they use MSG but I cant verify it. But I do get extremely thirsty after I eat their food. I eat persian japanese chinese indian whatever and this is one of the top saltiest restaurant. Reliance on MSG and Sodium is a reflection of the chefs skill to be able to use their craft as a cook to make delicious food.
I have been coming to Afghan Kebob House for over 10 years. It is my favorite restaurant in all of Manhattan and Ive been to plenty of other good ones. The combo platter with chicken and beef is amazing! Even after moving to Pennsylvania, every time I come back to the city, I make sure I bring the family here. Dont read any of the other negative reviews because I tell you the freshness of the meat, flavor of the Kebobs are unmatched. And I almost forgot about the white sauce. That makes the whole meal complete.
Very nice, authentic cuisine. Kebobs are excellent and meat is flavorful. There are a great choice of sides as well. There is intimate seating which is great for dates, but also larger tables in the back which are great for groups. Salads are also large with superb dressing.
I order the food today from this restaurant..I was going to order for my stuff. But I want to try out before I order for them .It was completely lie worst foodCharge me extra 8$$What I was ask it was totally different..Thanks good I do not order for my stuff .Ill never suggest to anyone its expensive and the food is not good Ill never order anything form this restaurant again
The waiter was racist and disrespectful. We were the only Muslims in the restaurant and he treated everyone else that was there nicely but us. The portion of the food was so little for the price. So not worth It. Don’t go here and waste your money on mediocre food and Terrible service.
Im not sure if the owner is Afghan, but the hospitality of the man who answered the phone didnt resemble the beauty of Afghan culture.I called to order bolonee and aushak, and when I asked if the size of the bolonee was traditional he said with frustration and disrespect Maam, please. Would you like to order or not? I responded trying to explain I would like to bring some home to my Afghan in-laws as I am leaving for the airport and wanted to pick some up on my way, though he refused to answer my question and was impatient as I spoke.I cant imagine a traditional Afghan restaurant upholding such shameful lack of hospitality. I doubt the owner, if Afghan, has any idea his employees are as disrespectful and impatient to their customers as this man was to me... Let alone to a young lady. No honorable Afghan business owner would reinforce that shame.
The best kebabs ever. The pilau is wonderful and the breads are made fresh to order. This family has been in the Afghani Restaurant business for more than 40 years in New York. It is a definite go to for a unique cultural experience. Their father made kebabs outside the American Embassy in the late 70s. Everyone went to him for the best kebab in Kabul!
Buried treasure! You wont find this place plastering ads on buses or even on the web anywhere - its old school - and its fabulous! Rustic charm, friendly owner who greets everyone as if they were family and fabulous food - hands down the best lamb I have ever had anywhere!!!
This place is okay, nothing fancy about it. Very courteous and attentive bartender, but should avoid going there if its not a weekend unless you dont mind being there by yourself. Also, sundays really suck especially when theres this girl bartender who happens to be rude. To sum it up, the place is fine on weekends for those who want to get away from the typical West Hartford barflies and have some conversation with friends and prices are regular bar prices
Came here for lunch. $25 mix dish gives you one small piece of lamb kabob, 2 dried pieces of chicken and 2 dried pieces of beef. Comes with salad w/ mayo and a side of tasteless rice. The dish doesnt much flavor. Dont waste your money here. No wonder the place was empty during peak lunch hour.
Loved this little 🇦🇫 Afghan restaurant. Their food is very closed to the authentic Afghan food found in Kabul, Mazar and Kandahar. Their KABAB is so juicy and delicious that it would remind you SHAHR-E-NAW SHINWARI stake houses. Will definitely go again if visited New York 🏙 again.
We brought two orders one Chicken grilled with Rice Palou and otherCombo platter.Came home on opening found Only4pcs of chicken and Rice completely without flavour.Combo had 2pcs of chicken and 2Finger long Kebob’s.Boiled Brown riceand no flavour.Called him next day and tried to explain that we have been visiting you since late 1970 .Not looking for any refund Just want to let you know, the man said I agree Rice were not usual but You Are Lying And you are a Liar. Will never order or go to this place. He lost over 25 customers as I am sending this to everyone.
Worst service ever. Waiter rude and ignored us. Sneezed on food, played on his phone, slept on the job, hada very, very severe attitude that NEEDS to be dealt with! Food was undercooked and moldy, and the resturant was empty which OF COURSE was a BAD SIGN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!HORRIBLE RESTURANT THAT DESERVES A GRADE LOWER THAN AN F. The FOOD is MOST LIKELY from A LANDFILL!!!!!!!!

2022-06-19One of the best and most delicious restaurants I’ve ever tasted! We came here to have a Father’s Day dinner with our whole family to eat authentic Afghani food. My dad was super happy that he ate at his favorite restaurant. I highly recommend visiting here and taste this cuisine. Important tip, be patient after you order because they cook their food with love and care. It’s worth your waiting time to eat and everyone will love it!

Also try the chocolate cake for desert. They dont serve alcohol but owner allows one to get their own bottles for no cockerage and there is a wine shop next door.Good service and a must for ones culinary diary when in NYC.

2022-04-23Excellent place. Perfectly spiced lamb tikka. Love the Afghan feel inside. Afghan rice was amazing too but not sure if I’ll swing back as I did have bad acid indigestion for the several hours after the meal.

2021-12-26Ismir always takes excellent care of us. He owns and operates the restaurant with his family and makes it feel like home. They make everything from scratch including their yogurt. Best rice and lamb in town!

2021-08-08Horrendous. Bad service, food sucked, this is the east side, yes the people may be nice but it took them 2 hours to make food, we are 10 people but it definitely does not take 2 hours to give appetizers. We waited one hour for appetizers, 30 minutes for actual drinks We literally sat for 2 hours and waited. If I could give this place less than a one star, I 100% would. 3 of my friends went to the bathroom and looked at the kitchen beside it, 4 workers, and one of them is on their phone the entire time, we went at different time periods to go to the bathroom. And they didn’t give any discount for horrendous wait. We are tourists and we had other plans but literally now we can’t do half the things we wanted because of the long wait and horrible service, they mixed up our orders and also gave us extra stuff we never asked for. I have never gone to any place that has made me so impatient and mad before. Very disappointed.

2022-04-08Great, quiet restaurant with lovely decor. Usually there is room especially for weekend dining - it is not brunch, and it is BYOB. So many kebab dishes, including combinations. Palau is a must, vegetable plates (eggplant and okra are favorites here) with heaps of delicious rice and Afghan bread that tastes so good.Of course there will be bolanee, delicious fried turnovers filled with seasoned pumpkin, potato or my favorite, spinach. Dumplings (aushak) are also a sure winner. The various servers refilled glasses and timed out the many, many dishes over the course of the meal. The owner is always around and is happy to talk about his menu. All told, the four of us (with wine brought from home) came out to less that $40 a person, thoroughly satisfied.

2022-05-14We waited for 45 minutes for our orders. The food was not warm at all. For the lamb chops, there were 3 tiny pieces of meat along with tomatoes and onions. An annoying guy kept asking if we would open a bottle of wine. Total disappointment
