I wanted to like this place but I cant get past how dirty it is. I was there about 2 years ago and the carpet was so worn down and gross. At least they replaced it with flooring now. When I walked in it smelled unappealing (I have a different word in mind but Ill leave it at this). I cant say Ill be back. I understand that its old, but it needs updating to get the smell out. Sorry. The staff was very nice, friendly, and efficient.
The best red sauce Italian joint in town! Every dish is delicious, homemade salad dressings, super friendly staff that remember you and make you feel special. This is our go-to dinner place when we want a nice, affordable date night or even on a grocery shoppibf night reward. LOVE this place!!!
This place has been around a very long time. It was good then and, under new ownership, is just like I remember. Great place for Italian food set in an old style restaurant. If youre looking for a break from traditional pizza then you have to try theirs! Its the best! Im so glad they are still around!
I was really disappointed with my latest visit to Aloys. It was a Sunday and they had about 25 patrons. Service was a bit on the slow side, though friendly. The food nothing to write home about. I ordered a Pizza Lina which was listed as being plum tomato with basil leaf what came out was a pizza with a basically no taste sauce. For an entree I ordered veal piccata, which was nicely done however a very small portion and the sauce used on the pasta looked and tasted like it came fresh from the can. My daughter ordered the penne in vodka sauce a dish she really likes truthfully it was so bad she couldnt eat it. Her problem was it was stringy as if they added mozzarella.Overall, this was not their best in terms of food or service. The last time I was there for an event (this past January) the food was much better.Over the years Ive had much better from them I hope they return to their original level of service and food quality. The decor hasnt changed much since I was a kid going there in the early 60s it could use an upgrade. The only change I really noticed was the carpet has been removed.
My daughter and I, with my grandchildren, from upstate met my sister from Orange County with her family at the Childrens Museum and after our visit, my daughter and I were looking for a family oriented place to take my grandchildren to dinner before we started back home. We found this restaurant and were very pleased. The staff was excellent, very family friendly (We had a 13 year old, 7 year old and 4 year old). The food was excellent. The prices very good. I am looking forward to going back again.
I remember going to Aloys 40 years ago , and the food was delicious. I went to a birthday party in December for a neighbor and was a little disappointed. The pizza appetizer was good and the chicken parmesan and ziti were good, but the eggplant wasnt what I remember. Tonight I had dinner with my family and I had the stuffed shrimp with crab very good, but the sauce on the linquini wasnt again what I remember. I guess you cant bring back the past.
Excellent traditional Italian cooking. Family owned/operated for 90 years, food your Italian grandmother would approve of, but of course hers is better. Limited menu, but that allows them to focus on the things they do very well, setve authentic home-cooked food, at very reasonable prices. The dining room is a bit small, with dated decorations. Staff is quite friendly, and fast and efficient service. Definitely worth what they charge. My new favorite Italian restaurant.
Crave this place! Passed through the area five years ago and discovered it. Delicious in every way and excellent service. Were passing back and all we could think about was the chicken marsala, meatballs and pasta, and everything else this place has. Excellent wine selection too
SAD!!!!!. I was seated, and got my drinks.. My waitress saw my water empty when she took our order and said she would be right back to refill it. Never heard from her again until half hour later. Two tables that came after us got their food first.....I was still fine, the other waitress came around the corner of the booth, startled us when she through our food down. Never made any effort to ask us if we needed anything, or say hi. I was waiting for anyone to acknowledge us, and see if we needed anything. the table next to us,then received there food and were asked if they needed anything...I didnt want my food to get cold, so I actually got up and walked across the restaurant to get some cheese. I then saw my waitress after I asked for my check from the hostess. She was soooo nice then. Food was nothing to remember either.......
This is my familys favorite restaurant. It is a nice family owned establishment with the best tasting Italian food in the area. They also have good salads and excellent thin-crust pizza. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for great Italian food, friendly service, and good prices!
I was shocked to hear about another Italian restaurant this old (1929) up here when I read Hudson Valley magazine awhile back. I knew about Milanese nearby, but I was far from impressed when I tried it. Between this and a few other Italian places--and a hell of a beer store--I decided to take a joy ride up to Poughkeepsie. After a scenic cruise via Verranzano Blvd and Brookside Ave, I was there. Aloys certainly doesnt look like much from the outside. Just a little white house thats been converted into a restaurant. The inside has a mix of old school Italian decor, with burgandy colored walls and a long bar. In addition to the main dining room, they have a room or 2 for private parties. There were several older gentlemen at the bar eating sandwiches for lunch, some stock market program on the TV, and the owners wife running things. She was awesome despite the demure setting. I chatted her up and stuck with my choice of a small pizza. The trip up here wasnt for nothing. This was the best pizza Ive had in the Hudson Valley. Despite the history, Aloys pies are of the grandma genus. But its a absolutely great grandma pie. Their sauce is bright and flavorful, the cheese used is fresh and not overwhelmingly applied, and although the crust sags, it is very crisp and a bit flaky on the outer edge. Like a great bar pie, the edges can carmelize a bit with the cheese. Perfectly simple, well balanced, and absolutely delicious. This was damned close to being on an elite level. They also offer a marinara pie with just tomatoes and grated romano cheese. The owners wife told me that some people even order it plain without the grated cheese. Reason for that is probably because their grated cheese is real Romano cheese, not the cheap crap that has wood pulp in it that is sometimes served, and it is quite strong. Regardless thatThe entire time I was here, I heard the beat of them tenderizing veal cutlets for dinner. Eventually the owner/chef came out to check on the dining room area and I talked to him too. Great guy, with a direct lineage (non-familial) going back to the original owners. I cant vouch for the rest of the food, but my family gave it a fair review. What I can vouch for is the owners, and definitely for the pizza. If you like a thin, crisp crust, dont miss it!
I have lived in Poughkeepsie for about a year now after living in Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx. Yeah...Im picky and judgemental about food. I freakin love this place. The pasta is awesome. The veal was so soft. The short rib stuff ravioli was delish. I just had the chicken francaise last night and the sauce was not too buttery. The wine used was sweet and the chicken flavorful. The homemade bread was warm and I stuffed my face with it. Its quiet in there but the posh quiet. More like you can talk with locals but also be left the hell alone if you wanted. I have ordered takeoit a few times since it closes at 9pm and I dont get back to Poughkeepsie until after 8pm. I am use to the city where the restaurants stay open late but nothing in poke town really does.i still havent coped with that. So yeah, will eat again. Matter of fact Im reviewing as i wait to pick up the penne vodka to see how that tastes. You must stop here if you are ever in Poughkeepsie.

2022-01-27What a nice place. I wish I had discovered it sooner. Great Italian food. Lovely ambiance. The desserts were impressive (that brownie topped cheesecake wow!). My friend and I had a really lovely evening and look forward to coming back.

2022-05-11This is one of the more difficult reviews Ive written. Despite living in/around Poughkeepsie for 50+ years, Ive never been to Aloys. Ive heard their pizza is legendary, and the food is fantastic, unfortunately that was not my experience but Im going to go back and give it another try. For now, all I can give it is 3 stars. On the plus side the staff is friendly and attentive. Although the atmosphere is nothing special and somewhat dated, theres also something appealing about it - it just feels comfortable. As you come in theres a bar to the right and the dining area is to the left. Past the dining area is a large room for parties. As far as the food goes, we had their pizza. It took a very long time to arrive. My dining partner has had their pizza many times before and loves it. Me, not so much. Its thin crust (which I do like) and we had half cheese and half pepperoni. The cheese only pie was better as it was much less oily with a crispy crust. I could easily pick it up and eat it. The pepperoni was very oily, thin crust also but far too floppy to pick up. The taste for both was just ok. There are a lot of reviews that speak highly of the pizza, so perhaps its just me because Im just not tasting it.The next time I go back I will try something other than the pizza and hopefully be able to rate it higher.

2022-05-28We had a family event at Aloys today. They have a beautiful private room for catering. The pizza hors doeuvres were delicious, the food was fantastic, and the service even more so. We had the penne a la vodka, the roasted rosemary chicken with potatoes, Italian meatballs, and sausage & peppers. Thank you Aloys for making our event go so smoothly.

2019-05-26Nice decor and family atmosphere, and our waitress, Jennifer, was very friendly and attentive. I had various things on the specials menu: asiago fries, a strawberry and feta cheese salad, and the shrimp and spinach cannelloni; all of it was very good, no complaints with the food. The complimentary bread was good as well, and it seemed to be fresh out of the oven when it got to the table. It looks like they have a room in the back that they open up for peak periods and parties, and theres a nice meal on the wall in there.

2022-03-28Food was good. The wait for our dinner took over an hour and there were only 6 people in the restaurant at the time we ordered.

2021-02-10Updated review-It wasnt busy when we arrived. We were immediately greeted and seated. Our drinks were Sloop Juice bomb for my husband and coffee for me. There was no coffee ☕ so our server Holly made me a fresh pot, this was very much appreciated. We chose the fried zucchini sticks as appetizer, they arrived super hot with a nice portion. Main course my husband chose the chicken parm with side of pasta and minestrone to start. I chose a salad 🥗 along with eggplant rollatini and side of pasta 🍝. Everything tasted great. We brought home out dessert which consisted of Tiramisu and some chocolate pudding cake. I cant say enough good things about Holly. She always had a smile 😁 which I could tell even when she was wearing a mask. We were checked on several times during our meal. This experience was perfect. Im glad we have this place another chance. I have it another star ⭐ as a result. Thank you Holly. Hopefully we will see you soon! The food was very good 👌 I had sausage & kale lasagne from the daily specials menu. My husband opted for chicken parmesan. Their portions looked average but we both had a hard time finishing, in this case our eyes were bigger than our stomachs. We were greeted & seated quickly and ordered just as quick. Our service was a bit disappointing. We were taken care of by two people and after finishing was asked if I would like coffee or and I did order a coffee. After waiting about 10 minutes one of our servers asked if we would like coffee or dessert and I simply said no as I had lost my patience.
