I’ve used the services at American Plaza on a few separate occasions and luckily I was able to find a decent room each time within a day (w/ two addresses given to me). My first two rooms were located in Manhattan, my current room is in the Bronx. My landlords have been very nice, too.With that said, there are some negatives things about American Plaza — the lady behind the desk is a bit unattentive at times; instead of fully focusing on me she seemed more concerned with answering phone calls and cold-calling potential clients. Also, she tried to milk me for an extra $175 on top of the $325 I had given her and $175 I had reserved for first week’s rent for the landlord.I literally walked in with the required amount of $500, which was all I had, but this lady was trying to bleed me of an additional $175 which was crazy. I put my foot down and told her NO. So, beware — if you’re non-Spanish you must proceed with caution. This place is legit, but you just gotta put in some work and try and visit as many addresses until you find something you like.

Suzie is on that phone all day acting like shes finding you a room to rent meanwhile shes just trying to look like shes doing something productive. It was so unfair what she did to me, I had all this money saved and she scammed me out of almost all of it now Im pretty much homeless on the street
For the price you really cant complain. You can find a room, in the city, or whatever neighborhood, for a very small fee in a matter of days. For new york, thats reasonable. Ive spent months looking for apartments otherwise, or spent three times the amount on broker fees. You have to be patient, she doesnt speak English, but will find you a room asap.
The wait is long and it can be frustrating, but this woman is a professional and has been doing this over 25 years. A lot of bad reviews for no reason. Good rooms with wifi and kitchen access will run $200. If you want to pay $150, youre room will not be as good. You get what you pay for. Brush up on your spanish too. She will find you a place, she has the best leads for rooms in the city.
I wish I could give this 0 stars! DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT!!!!!! Do business with them!! Their real address is 3834 Broadway! Susie (the lady that operates the “services” is the Jankiest person I’ve ever done business with. She gave me 5 addresses/contacts (2 my first visit and 3 my second visit). You only get 2 contacts at a time. 2 people wouldn’t answer for me via text or phone and I called many times from different numbers. 2 People said they don’t know what I’m talking about (room rentals) the other person wouldn’t let me rent with them because language barrier (Spanish/English). Majority of the landlords are Hispanic. When I went back to get my refund I had to commute back to the office and wait 3 hrs JUST to get my money while I was there waiting Susie acted like she didn’t speak English all of a sudden but prior to this day she was having full conversations in English. Pathetic. I couldn’t believe what I was witnessing. EVERYTIME YOU VISIT THEM AND NEED TO HANDLE BUSINESS OR SIMPLY ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT THE ROOMS NOT BEING AVAILABLE SHE WILL IGNORE YOU AND YOU WILL WAIT. She spends 2 hours EACH customer. She uses an OLD composition notebook with contacts that she write down. Her order of business operation is in the 1960’s. There is no computer present. It’s filthy and junky in the office and a cat walks around jumping on you and the furniture. So if you have allergies DONT GO! I don’t understand how she is open and operating this business it is the craziest thing I’ve ever witnessed. My advice to Susie is to CLOSE THE OFFICE and spend a full day contacting all of those contacts on that composition notebook and making sure the contacts are still valid and available. I’d suggest she invest in a laptop as well and an excel class to better document her room rentals and information. However, if you need a room rental agency go to DELTA ROOM RENTALS! Super polite, short wait time, modern and clean office, helpful agents. Me and my brother went in the office (after my refund from Susie) and moved in to a clean apartment same night. RUN AWAY from AMERICAN PLAZA!!!!! Believe the reviews!
That agency is a fraud if you apply and something happens to you and you need to get the money back for you. They do not give it back to you. Its unfair that they do that. Im a young man who barely makes $ 250 a week and Im left with half of it. my sweat of a whole week I recommend you to find other agencies that do reimbursement in case you need money for after.
They were very friendly and got myself and my bf a room on first shot but......We are a white american couple, which she told them on the phone, we stayed one night and were given our money back by our spanish landlord saying that nobody in the spanish building wanted us there that people called to complain about why she had us there. We were out on the street with no place and the ladies at American Plaza didnt seem to be phased. They had our non-refundable 150 service fee and our 1 week rent charge of 200. They found us a new room as a courtesy so they say. I feel the dont care about matching people appropriately they just want you to get a room because as per the contract you sign once the landlord gives you keys they are not responsible for what happens. Also their signs say No Fee but you need at least 400-600 to move in to a weekly charged room. Plus Utilities are included but the rest is up to the person you rent from....adding additional extra charges for necessities once you move in. I believe there are more legit places in NYC to find a room. Be picky before saying yes to a room. Cause once the keys are in your hand your moneys gone even if you get kicked out for being a different race than them. Be safe and Good luck.
Would give 0 stars if I could. She sends you to addresses that arent real, to people who dont answer thier phones, who arent home, and to rooms that arent ready. Its been 2 weeks and I have seen only 2 rooms. You will sit there all day 11am-8pm and only get 2 addresses that dont work. Save your time and money. You will do better with craigs list! Should have taken a clue when several people came in while I was waiting to ask for thier money back. Really RUN IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION OF THIS PLACE!!!!!
This room rental service is a complete scam. Not only did the not get me a room but they lied to me, I experienced racial discrimination, and when I requested a refund they blocked my number/would not speak to me when I went into there office. DO NOT USE THIS SERVICE!
Im student from korea. I found America plaza at craglist.And my English is not perfect but i really hope to help someone who want to go America plaza. PLZ DONT GO THERE.First time when i went there they said they have lots of room in every area in NY. They wanted service fee 150$ before service. before the sign i asked i dont want to live with family house, with man is it possible?, They said yes sure. just sign and then whatever you want you can find but every time when i went to the room everything was wrong. was not what Im talking about.first time-family room 2. family room 3. Four man live in the apt. 4. three man live in apt 5. owner doesnt answer 6. when i call the owner, America plaza officer answered.One day they give only 2 adress. so i should went there 5time and everytime i was waiting more 3 hours.Everytime when they gave to me adress, i asked them. is it not family room and not mans room? and they told me yes sure! but everytime was not!service fee? no! they didnt servie just they make to spend time.Last time i couldnt patient anymore so i said to them just refund my money. and then they said i cant give back service fee. but i saw! they refund to somepeople who are Threatening or problem causing. but im girl and little.Last time the officer girl wanted to make me upset. bcz i said you didnt service to me you make spending my time. i was waiting 3hours but when my term came she was making some food, watching TV and cheating. it so rude and uneducate! at the time i gave up to refund all money because she is childish and ignorancewhen i refunded, at the day 4 american guys were refund with lots of complain.If you cant speak spanish dont go there never!!probably the Fly-by-night lazy unprofessinal office woman say i cant speak English. but last time i saw she can understand and can speak. just she try to escape.Dont spend your time and money !
Im dealing with HRA. As opposed to telling me they couldnt help me, I ended up wasting carfare and time. On the 24th I explained that I have to move out before the 1st. They said ok we got you. The 25th. Waited for an entire day from 12pm to 6pm. only to have the head guy call to tell me they cant help me. They did refund my money but the time I wasted was priceless. Recommend you dont bother.
Good place to rent rooms weekly. THIS PLACE IS NOT A SCAM. If you need a room ASAP, follow their instructions and youll be good to go. It is a bit run down and always a long wait, but its the sacrifice for the service
Service was extremely horrible. Do not contact this place you will regret it. This is a room they took me to see. It had no windows. They just threw a wall there n a cot with no mattress. My rating isnt even one star for this place.
This is the best place where you can find a nice big room and its the only agency that allows you to have OPEN service! you get your money back and the service fee is nonrefundable but u can come bck a year later and dont have to pay for it again and its still gonna be open!

My experience there was a nightmare it’s a big scam all they do is take your money.keep sending you to different places and the landlords never pick up the phone when you trying to go see the property. If they do pick up by time you get there they don’t answer anymore big rip off.

2022-05-14I came here back in 2010 and again this past November, and Suzie found me a room in my budget on both occasions the same day I came.I now have a very spacious room with nice furniture and a full sized bed with my own fridge and a very nice roommate.Also have WiFi and an AC and all for only 200 per week. This was my experience, surprised to see all the bad reviews.She does charge a fee and gives the breakdown of total cost to move in to the place in writing that requires a signature. Not a scam, would come again if I need to in the future.

She’s a fraud taking money from everyone and everything, she will hustle you out until she can just to make sure to have her business up and running and not caring if you need a roof under your head! She has great acting skills, she’s not who she presents to be! please trust and believe !!! Never again !! I lost $470 with this women Suzy!

2018-08-03I went there to go find a room to rent , I was the first person there and last to be seen . The woman who works their is a scammer. She takes advantage of non us citizens. They pay her ,and then she screws them out of cash , because shes aware that they cant file a legal complaint . My experience with the woman who runs the place there was awful. Her services is $150 +$150 security deposit (which you dont get back ,and goes directly into her pocket). I figured if I be okay with that ,then she would get me a room to rent ASAP. She said she can make that happen .She gives me two bogus phone # and tells me to be at an address at the first address at 7pm and 7:30p. . I go and find out there was no room to rent at both places. So, I take a cab back to her so called office asap before she closes and demanded my money back . She Tells me she can only give me $150 back , because I signed the agreement. I told her if I dont get back all my funds back ,I will file a complaint on her license,if she has license... immediately she gave back all my funds with no hesitation. She obviously doesnt want nobody screwing up her gig. If she wouldve been honest instead of being deceitful ,I wouldve gave her the benefit of the doubt and see if she can get me a room . I feel bad for the non citizens that get taken advantage there.So, I will be filing a complaint on this woman .American Plaza must be investigated and shutdown immediately. One person there literally said Ive been waiting for a room for two months The woman also claims not to speak or understand English ,she speaks and understands it fine.

2020-05-26Im leaving a review to SERIOUSLY WARN YOU of what is happening here. I was looking for a room I could rent for the summer on a weekly basis due to being new to New York and just starting a new job and starting my life up. I went on Craigslist and found an Ad stating they have just what I am looking for, in Harlem (no lease, no credit, $200 a week for a single person). Yvonne was the person of contact and I met with her in a building in Midtown and she says she works for a company called NYC Private Rentals. She says I pay $160 for using her service, so I do then she sends me to American Plaza in Harlem. Also, she tells me that I would be speaking to a woman called Susie who will connect me with the apartment owners but that too will cost 200 and then another 200 goes to the apartment owner for rent. When I get to American Plaza there are people waiting inside and people standing outside ( COVID 19, social distancing rules), I got there at 3 pm and left a quarter before 6 pm. I had to wait outside with about 4 other people. NYC Rentals makes it clear to you that they are not the same business as American Plaza, and the reason for that is because they know the nonsense that is this business, and they know people have been reporting them and complaining and asking for refunds, so they try to separate themselves from American Plaza to avoid being reported along with them. After I left that long wait, I was disappointed, tired, and defeated but I got to look into the reviews and complaints of American Plaza and they are true. They are negative but it is all true. I refuse to believe a woman that has been at this business for so many years....just does not speak english....Here is what it is. They are both trash companies and while I was waiting I noticed who was coming in and out the business and who was truly being serviced. They prioritise specific types people. (Which is not awful, but they dont have any respect and the same work ethic for others). Everyone else is put through the trenches in order to be serviced if they even get the chance to be serviced.They take your money, make you wait extremely long with no sense of urgency because you are desperate for a room, and show you things that either dont exist, owners that dont know what you are talking about when you show up or pure trash and unsafe enviorments. They will try to deny it but what I saw was clear as day. When you then look at other complaints and reviews you will notice the tye of people that were treated poorly and without the least bit of care.This is the sad truth. Stay away from them and join facebook groups specifially subletting groups in ny to ask about subletting rooms for cheap, people will respond and point you in the right direction.. They facebook groups saved my life in this situation. These two companies will take your money and exploit your need to find a a low budget room, and they dont care. no stars, and the random people leaving good reviews were coerced...there is no such thing as the words great fast and wonderful when it concerns this establishment. stop lying.

2019-06-17It is not a scam. I found an awesome place in 3 days - had to look at a lot of places but she gave me those places to look at and choose from. Less than a year later I went with my friend who just moved to NY and he found a very nice place in 2 days. Another friend of mine I recommended back in March found a place in the same day! If you expect to go in for a half hour and have a place, well..dream on. If you are willing to do the foot work based on the information Susie gives you - you will find a place.Update June 2019 - I needed to find another place, it took 9 days but I stuck with her and she found me a beautiful place off of riverside avenue a few blocks away from her office. People have to remember this is not a real estate rental agency it is a room rental agency - you may see places you dont like at first but you have to stick with it. Very happy with my new place, thank you Suzy.

2021-05-03If you’re not Dominican do not go here, they only cater to their kind. Most landlords don’t speak english and will not let you rent the room if you’re not spanish speaking. Also most rooms she (Suzy) sends you to are unavailable. Report them to BBB. oh yeah and no refunds for absolutely trash and discriminatory service.

2019-05-01Do not, I REPEAT DO NOT use this agency as a tool for new room renting options. I could give a paragraph thats similar to the rest of the low rated reviews on here but Ill keep it short and simple. Scam, scam, scam. They do not care about your experience once theyve received your non refundable $200 fee. When I went to the 2nd location where the property manager had all the options she fell super short and unprofessional.I had to return the following day because the wait was so long and she was the only one dealing with clients. No computer. No sense of organization, limited English language. Plus youll find her pet cat running around the office, on top of you, oh and if your lucky like me, watch the cat throw up near her desk where she asked me to sit on top of when her assistant barely cleaned it up. Disgrace. She (they) bank off of people who didnt do their research and are desperate for housing. I WILL NEVER REFER ANYONE HERE. You will lose, when I asked for a refund they call their manager and then relay an Im sure scripted message to you saying youve been denied refund and can go back to the agency to continue your hunt for 30 days. Lesson learned! Dont make the same mistake people.

Today she called the cops on me because I was insistent on getting a refund. I got my money back in front of the cops. They said they are there every week and that they are interested in shutting down this business but needs the public help in shutting down by reporting them to the BBB and folks like Help me Howard

2019-09-02I thought Suzi was of utmost helpful. I’ve never seen a woman whom could simultaneously speak on three phone lines at a time and never confuse them while at the same time looking for rooms to rent. She sent me to 9 apartments, none of which worked out by no fault of her own, she even refunded me, in the total amount that I had given her. I’ll be back in October for sure.

2017-06-04WORST PLACE EVER!!!!! This place is a piece of junk. I rather pay someone else more for better service. Takes forever and they only give you two addresses at a time. To make it worse, all the addresses she sent me to are the ones who are not renting out a room. One phone number was not real. A big waste of my time and money. I had to spend extra money on hotels because of this stupid agency. I really want to report this agency if I dont end up getting my money back
