Nice vibes considering the new norms. Had the California Chicken Sandwich with sweet potato fries! It was a great sandwich! Heres what to expect:The chicken was a manageable size , the guac was a guacamole spread , and the fries was not super crunchy, but not soggy.Let me know if you agree!
We were looking for some late night grub and this was the only spot that was still serving food at 10pm on a Thursday. Great selection of beer and decently priced. The wait staff was super nice and helpful even with the amount of people that were here. Super packed but we never felt ignored or forgotten. Food was very good. Many different options. I had the Cuban upon recommendation from the staff and it was good, not the best cuban Ive ever had but overall very good. Lots of meat and definitely tasty. If youre looking for a bar crowd and a nice food menu this is a good spot especially on a weeknight.
The beer selection is truly amazing. Many different styles and breweries. Some regular, some rotating so we can always be surprised. Something for everyone, unless you dont like beer... but wait! They also have whiskey and gin and whatnot so yeah, something for everyone. Will definitely visit again.
We went here for lunch and had it outdoors, so had the included people watching entertainment.Staff was very attentive. We had buffalo wings and the spicy chicken sandwich (It may be listed differently) which included fries. The sandwich contained a slightly spicy sauce which wasnt too heavy, cheddar cheese, and a moist chicken breast. The sauce was great and didnt overpower the chicken or cheese.Unfortunately I dived into the plate before taking a picture.
I was excited to see the outside really gave a feel like a great place to grab a drink with friends after work. However looks were deceiving. There was six (in a party of 7) they refused to seat us untill the 7th showed up... After we started to complain we were sat in the back. Which was fine but I got the feeling the place was dimly lit because it was so gross and dirty, not for the ambience... Looking up at the ceiling tiles they looked like they had never been cleaned, especially near the food area in the middle. The bathroom more closely resembled a (dive bar) not an upscale pub as it looked on the street. Dirty, no towels (it was about 25% full in the resterant on a Thursday) It was clearly par for the course for this place. The prices were way out of league, unless you follow the (higher price means better) way of thinking. 10 bucks for 8 tatertots is a bit much... Dont plan on charging your phone as you eat, none of the outlets worked. Also the guy that waited on us was nice but kept singing... And not a pleasant tone; BUT some sort of (look at me i want to be discovered) kind of way. Very offputting, and way to loud or (narcissistic). Its the kind of thing you wanna see when your drunk... Not just trying to chat with your friends... Over all this place was a total DUD.... Avoid it.. Theres sooooooo many other places in NYC!
Had a good experience. Stopped in to escape the rain during Hurricane Henri’s arrival. The place was BUSY. Waitress was super friendly and took great care of us. We just had drinks while we waited for our Uber to our restaurant reservations. It seems like a cool spot to stop in after work for drinks. Just be prepared for a crowd!
If I could give it zero stars I would. They checked our vaccines and gave us a table and that was it. No one helped us for 20 minutes. 10 minutes we asked for help. We wanted at least water. We asked what appeared to be a busser for help and he said he would go get the waiter. No one came. Eat here if you want to spend the whole day here. I can’t attest to food or drinks but it was certainly not worth my time.
Cheeseburger was good but the English Muffin could not really hold all the juices and just didnt work well as a burger bun. The mac & cheese bites tasted like the mac & cheese from a box and like they were frozen. The onion rings were good but way too greasy. Ultimately the service was horrible. We did not get greeted at the door (which you have to show vaccine proof) so we had to find our own table and I had to inform the staff towards the back of the restaurant as to where we were sitting. It still took a while to finally be seen by a waiter until I waived one down as he was walking right past me. Long story short, order came wrong with the appetizer, my beer and only one burger order together. I had two burger orders which I had to wait for while the other burger got cold. Finally, the music was way too loud to converse and the prices were a little too high.
Been here a few times over the years. The service is always great. In the pandemic right now, they have not slacked on customer service even though a lot of other places have. Ive enjoyed a nice outdoor, street seating dinner and it was very nice. All the tables are spaced accordingly and the bussers are constantly cleaning and my server has changed her gloves so frequently I feel genuinely safe.
Got the baffalo wings, would say it was okay but not great. Blue cheese dip wasnt very blue cheesy, and just tasted hot sauced. The food came out and was luke warm, even the fries were basically cold. We didnt wait long for it to come out so assuming pre-cooked? Overall disappointing for food. However I found the service friendly and quick - we sat outdoors during the march madness game. So no complaints there. Id come back but just eat somewhere else.
The Ale House has set up some very sensibly spaced out outdoor seating, where we enjoyed some nice pub-grub and a great brew, while warming our hands near the heaters that they provided. (Yep, this afternoon it was in the mid-30s, fahrenheit. Despite the desperate cold, all the outdoor tables were occupied!)Looking forward to coming back, hopefully on warmer days...
Pros: great beer selection (lots on draft!) at decent prices. Heated outdoor seating.Cons: 10% added to the bill for COVID overhead. Restaurants are struggling right now so it’s mostly understandable, but good to know before you go. Food was just ok. This would have been a better “quick pint and quick bite” stop vs. dinner + drinks. We got the Shepard’s pie and the fish & chips. The pie was soupy and outrageously salty. I probably over salt my food, so for me to think it was salty would probably kill someone else haha The fish & chips were also ok. Three fish strips and the batter/breading inside still felt.. uncooked? Liquidy? Not horrendous but not great. Fries were decent. We also got an order of onion rings and added spicy ranch. Those were as expected/we enjoyed.Could see coming back for brews, but definitely not food.Service was great!ETA: there was an unknown credit card charge that appeared on our bill (prior to paying). Obviously we had no choice since didn’t have the cash to cover (because it’s not 1995), so again- good to know before going.
Good selection of beers, though its not really a craft place. Food was excellent, which is why there are 4 stars here. Whether it be wings, nachos, a burger, or mozzarella sticks...you cant go wrong. Definitely a good place to fill up with comfort food and swing a few back.
The beer was good but the the waitress was very annoying. When we asked to use an outlet so we can charge our little scooter to get home, she just said “no”. We would have had to stay for another hour, but instead we found a nice pub around the corner who where happy to help us.
The Amsterdam Ale House is a lively old school pub with a really great vibe. Its warm and friendly, and its right around the corner from the Beacon Theater...so it can get pretty crowded here. I love this place! Ive been coming here for years and I highly recommend it. Youre going to love it too! The food is great (best burgers anywhere for sure!), the drinks are good, and the service is excellent!
The outside patio was in a nice area, it was dog friendly, and the staff was great. The food was very underwhelming. We ordered 2 burgers cooked at different temperatures and both were flavorless and undersalted. The side salad and dressing were of good quality. The side sweet potato fries were very bad. I dont think Ive had bad sweet potato fries before this. For the price the place was definitely not worth it. Youre paying for location. Again the staff was great and its fine to pick up a beer here, but the food makes it a legit 2-star.
My husband and I were looking for a late night food/drink spot and found this place. We loved it! The shepherds pie was outstanding as well as the mac and cheese. Great service, good drink selection, clean establishment. We will definitely be back! Great for a late date night!
Nice ale House with great variety of beers on draft and an impressive selection of bottled beer as well. No cocktail list so definitely the place to go for beer or wine. The food options were great and I loved the pulled pork sandwich which I had with sweet potato fries. Everything was cooked perfectly, served promptly and taken care of by a great wait staff.
Updated November 2018.Visited NYC a few times and have eaten here 5 or 6. Food is always good. The beer selections are outstanding. Atmosphere is cozy.Only complaint is that on one visit the waiter was really rushing us. It doesnt change my overall opinion of the restaurant though.
Everything we had was amazing!! Fish and chips were delightful and the tuna steak burger was incredible. Some other dishes the table enjoyed were the lamb burger and the Sheppards pie. My mom is very hard to please and loved the Sheppards pie. Cant recommend this place enough!!!
The bar area was packed and prohibitively loud, but the room in the back was great for a little date night. Not tremendously atmospheric, but quiet enough to talk. Beer selection is pretty good, but a little overpriced as you dont get a full size glass even for an every day sort of draught.Service left a little to be desired. The waitress forgot to put in the order for our appetizer, and got my order wrong. Food was decent pub fair.
Wonderful place. The perfect spot for a Pre-Beacon Theater drink or to watch a sporting event. One of the last local spots in the neighborhood.Food and drink are great and a great local vibe. Seasoned Bartenders like Rob, Stacey Billy and Stephanie and all of the servers always take care of you.
Had dinner, better for a drinking spot. Amazing beer selection. Food was not worth it. Chicken tenders tasted like they were out of a frozen bag. Flaccid not crispy, super chewy. Tuna steak burger was tasteless, thankfully there was wasabi mayo. Brioche bun for that burger was a poor choice but also was dry like it was a day old.
Each time Ive gotten the lamb burger it hasnt been that great, this last time I asked for medium rare and there was raw cold meat in the middle. Overall though, I like the atmosphere of this place, beers are good, service not bad, seems like a neighborhood place. Definitely could make some improvements though.
Always a great, reliable stand-by for pre-concert fair. They can often get crushed before a Beacon Theater event, but they manage crowds well. (If they cant seat you...they cant, but youll get an honest answer) Its tight inside, but once youre settled in, no big deal. Great selection of beer, knowledgeable bar tenders and friendly wait staff. Food is solid. Nothing special, but exceeds any standard greasy spoon. The bison burger is always a favorite.
Everything was phenomenal - fish tacos, buffalo wings, chicken tenders, spicy chicken sandwich was top shelf! That’s tommy smiling; he is a tough critic!Very very kid friendly! Coloring for little kids. For adults they have a ton on tap!Service was amazing!Hungry? Eat at Amsterdam Ale House!
Come here for a great burger and pub food. The burger I ordered could have used a little more seasoning but it was cooked to medium rare perfection and super juicy. The burger comes in an amazing English muffin bun that was super crisp and held up well to the juices, lettuce onion and tomato.
I had the Buffalo burger with sweet potato fries on the menu. The burgers came in an English muffin. I wasnt expecting that but the burgers were cooked as ordered. The atmosphere was a bit more like a sports bar. If you want to have dinner and talk with a couple of buddies this is the place to go. Also, the front of the house was quite welcoming and polite.
Ive been going here since it was Westside Brewing Co. and although theres been a change in management, things are still pretty much the same. Theres a great selection of beers on tap that are always changing and the service is pleasant. Love the wings and the mac & cheese bites as well as the burgers; the small outdoor area is great for brunch in the warm months.
Our go-to local spot for food and drinks. Family-friendly during the day, with great outdoor seating, and a fun place to hang out until the wee hours of the morning. Staff and patrons are always fun and friendly and the craft beer and food menu are top-notch with lots of variety.
Had a great night out there...seven years ago...great atmosphere, great drinks, great prices...Google Maps REALLY wants me to review this place. They have kept the record of my visit for seven years. This is like my fourth phone...but Google remembers. The bar was great...but I think Im being stalked by Google. It may have become sentient :)
Its possible that its a great place. Unfortunately Ill never know. Im a person who uses a power wheelchair and I was attending an event at the Beacon Theatre with the intention of having dinner at the Amsterdam Ale House. When I arrive, the wheelchair access ramp is blocked by outdoor dining furniture and a bench right in front of the door. Just the general disregard for people with disabilities is very disappointing.
Really, come here with the proper expectation. Its called West Side Brewery, not eatery. Dont get me wrong the food is good, but its really a place to have a great beer, which they have many to choose from. They have good Burgers, Salads, Fish and chips, although the Wings left a little to be desired. Great place to go for a beer after work or a lazy afternoon cold one.
Food was standard but the one female bar attendant/waitress was the most arrogant and rude waitress I have ever experienced. She gave americans a bad name. Seriously no need for her bad attitude. She wasnt busy or particularly stressed, no excuse for rudeness. Definitively would not recommend.
Great burgers and an old neighborhood spot. I Mean not that old but like maybe 30 years or so. I hate beer in general though. Tastes like bitter soda and burps. Good solid bar though for us real men. Dont expect to be served at 3am if youre so drunk you can hardly speak. I wasnt mad.
Loud and dark. The wings and fries were mediocre at best. This is the place to go when you dont have time to wait for nicer place on a Saturday night but still want a sit-down place. But I wouldnt go there any other time.As a side note, the outlets didnt work so you may not be able to charge your devices.
Its kind of an Upper West Side institution. Been around for ages. Lots of beer on tap, though thats not such an achievement today considering the number or breweries out there. Its good for American sports; lots of TV screens with football, baseball and basketball. Dont think Ive seen soccer... but could be wrong.
I went here all the time while living on the UWS. Probably, as far as bars with food good, this was my favorite all around due to the combination of high quality beers, delicious bar food, and good atmosphere. I have tried almost all of the food here. Standouts are the tuna melt (one of the best anywhere), burger, nachos with meat (this app will feed four people, seriously).
Been here a few times and Ive begun surprised by liking the food and drinks (and drink selection - in addition to beers, they have some less common ciders and pretty good cocktails). Unfortunately over the few times Ive come in over the years, the service ranged from stellar to aloof/spotty, which is really my only complaint. They also dont have a ton of vegan, vegetarian and/or gluten free options other than salad and some sides/apps, but wouldnt say you should expect that at somewhere looking to be known for their ale.
The table arrangement adjacent to the bar is ridiculous. I had to eat my lunch with some dudes ass in my face because the tables are too close to the bar. Tried to ask the server if we could move tables, but we never saw her after she brought us our food. The beer was too warm for a beer bar and the place was generally dirty. Overall poor service. And the caesar salad had almost no dressing on it. Again, I tried to tell the server but she was incognito. There are MUCH better beer bars in NYC to waste your time here.
Couldnt help noticing that the two parties aged 60-plus got seated way in the rear of the premises where the servers seldom go, even though lots of tables were available closer to the front. Younger (more attractive? ) parties all had seats up front. Hope it wasnt discrimination but sure looked that way.
Ive been to this awesome old joint many, many times over the years--usually stopping in for a burger & a few beers before/after shows @The Beacon. However, this trip was soooo disappointing. Service was horrid& the food came out literally 2 minutes after I ordered it--clearly someones Ooops! order which sat cold in the window. My mac-n-cheese bites arrived with no garnish, dipping sauce, was cold & congealed. I decided to not order a meal...Look, I worked in the service industry--particularly as a bartender--for over 25 years. Im ALWAYS polite (Please hun; Thanks babe!) & an over-tipper. (Im female, in case you wondered & just super friendly.) Well, the 2 young women on staff this day were the worst. The 1st one I interacted with was a tiny Asian girl who I swear was the rudest person Ive ever met anywhere. When a bar isnt that busy & a customer sits down & you SEE her, at least make eye contact, acknowledge her! Holy cow, even when she finally came over she never said a word, only stared at me blankly when I ordered a beer & walked away. Its not like she couldnt speak because she was chatting up other folks at the other 2 ends of the bar & Im directly in the middle. She never began pouring my Guiness until I asked the 2nd girl. Same when I asked for Wi-Fi password--stared at me like I had 2 heads & walked away. No, Ok, gimme a sec, let me check or whatever. Just walked away for like 7-8 minutes. The slim white girl was only marginally more attentive but still lacked people skills. I wound up asking her when the 1st girl overheard, wrote it down on a piece of paper & shoved it in my face. You know, I still tipped them way over what they deserved because Im a nice person like that. BUT, Id turn right around & walk out if that Asian woman is on staff again. How sad that these millenials have zero personality & no clue how to properly interact with the public, ESPECIALLY when your job is as a bartender in the greatest city on earth in one of the oldest, most charming Ale Houses in the world. Shame, shame on the people who just hire anybody these days.
This is a good old fashioned authentically Italian Salumeria. The meats are delicious. Not fatty or tough as roast beef can sometimes be and although this is only my second order it wont be my last. Frankly I cant get enough and it is my goal to try as many different sandwiches as possible. You know sometimes you order a sandwich and while it is visually appealing, the bread is stale and it goes downhill from there. You also have the option to order different types of bread, wraps, whole wheat, hero, roll, etc. Right now Im very impressed and I am a LOYAL customer when I am happy.
Horrible experience. Bartender/server basically ignored us. Called ahead to make sure they would serve me outside, they said yes. After getting my water and beer, didnt see server for 30 minutes. The place was near empty. Been going there for years - I hope this isnt whats going to be this summer. Oh, this was a Monday afternoon.
Ridiculous. Paid $10 for a non-craft beer in this dive, where the air conditioning is just not up to the task. Im not a tourist (native nyer) who blanches at paying for a beer, but this is just silly. A dozen places nearby that would be preferable in every way.New edit: I just looked at other reviews being posted, and there just isnt any way that many of them are legitimate. Some contain outright falsehoods. Again, another reason to be sceptical.
Dim, dark and right in all the right spots. This bar is a perfect date spot, or place to meet up with a friend. I sat at the bar and the bartender was spot on with bringing drinks when needed. If you live in the UWS, definitely make it a point to check this place out.
My son and I searched a place to drink a glass of beer. We found the Amsterdam Ale House. First we enjoyed a local beer, Brooklyn Lager. Nice. Then we decided to have dinner in the Amsterdam Ale. The Bison Burger tasted delicious. The staff was friendly. In Holland we say it is a typical bruine kroeg.
What a rude hostess. We went there to watch the cowboys game. There was an empty table for six right in front of the one screen where the game was playing. The rude hostess told us it was only for parties of 6. My brother asked politely if he could sit there until she needed the table. She said no. There was no where to stand or sit with a view of the screen that wasnt blocking other fans. More than an hour later the table is still empty.
The draft list is incredibly boring for having 30+ taps and calling itself an Ale House. Imagine all the mundane craft beers -hoegarten, yeungling, stella, etc.- and then ask why? The answer is Lowest Common Denominator, which is what this bar is. Nothing wrong, but nothing interesting either. The bottle list is a bit more interesting with about 4-5 out of 60 beers worth trying.
Now this is an awesome place Ive already tried recruiting the cooks to go back to Texas with me everything is on point the beer is like candy the brunch is ridiculously delicious the service is great I wish this place was closer to my hotel....all around awesome place
I dont know what to say... but we saw rats (perhaps mice...they look like they are baby rats) running up and down the wall... I mean inside the bar... like behind us... Rats do co-exist in NYC.. so no surprise... but please please please let us not see mice inside the bar.

2022-05-22Not the first time here and its a good local neighborhood bar. They have a ton of outdoor seating, in front, on the side and a large curb side shelter as well.Lots of craft beer on tap and full menu. Service was prompt, hostess seated us outside right away and server was right over. They brought a water dish for my dog. I did feel the mozzarella sticks were pretty skinny but I guess those are the times.Overall great place for a brew and food.

2022-02-13We had the best experience. AC was our main server. He was fantastic. Helped my husband make his dinner choice and he was spot on. He was funny and entertaining and really made the experience wonderful. He knew we had the Andy Grammer show and told us when to leave and where to check in. Now for the food. My angus burger was to die for. Best burger I have had in a long while. Hubby had the fish tacos and they were terrific. He is a foodie so will try and replicate at home. Our son had the Bison burger which looked amazing and he said was wonderful too!.Thank you for making our first night out in a loooonnnggg time such a wonderful experience. We will be back for sure!

2022-04-17Great dinner and drink spot near the beacon! The food portions are HUGE so you’ll definitely leave full. The food is a bit above average, so stick with the classics like the angus or bison burger. The beer is great and the staff is awesome. Overall great spot

2022-07-12Came for happy hour after visiting the museum of natural history near Central Park. A quick wal past all the beautiful brownstones to happy hour at Amsterdam! Great selection of beers on tap and apps. The buffalo cauliflower and fried goat cheese beet salad were standouts! Everyone loved their food!!

2022-08-05We love the food. When in for early our weeknight dinner in back room, we asked for music to be turned down to could hear ourselves talk and they wouldnt. First time. We had to leave. This was a football time or Saturday night. We love . Please address early folks also.

2022-08-11Lively and gritty beer bar that just happened to be a block from my hotel. If Id found it before our last night, I would have tried the food too. Still a fun place for a cold drink.

2021-02-14This food was excellent! It wasn’t very busy so all the food came out hot and absolutely perfect. I could complain but since the food was that good I can give a pass on it being very cold in the back room and it was a long wait for it being slow. This place I plan to return to!

2021-01-21Nice place. They have a three walled patio with several tables, and each one has a heat lamp thankfully. Nice lights up to add to the ambiance too. The waitstaff was very friendly and took great care of us. We were very satisfied with the chicken tenders and chili soup. Reasonable prices, though I think they do add 4% if you pay with a credit card, which I haven’t seen in many restaurants.
