Lovely little place! I came in for a wonderful late lunch… Paneer Makhani, Garlic Naan, and Mango Lassi. Delicious! I spoke with one of the owners. So welcoming. Plus, he informed me that they have a nice space upstairs for hosting larger parties or gatherings. Highly recommend this sweet and simple place.
Probably the best Indian place in UWS (or dare I say anywhere in NYC outside of Jackson Heights), especially at this price range. I say this as someone who loves Indian food and has been to most Indian restaurants in UWS. I had an absolute blast coming here with a couple of friends a few weeks ago, and missed it so much that I ended up ordering takeout today.I’ve ordered the lasooni gobi, samosas, lamb rogan josh, chicken tikka, butter chicken, vegetable jalfrezi, and chicken korma. Every single dish was juicy, spicy, and filled with flavor. The chicken is actually juicy (unlike many establishments across the city) and the lamb is tender. If you like spicy and delicious Indian food, I promise you you will not be disappointed.
Awesome experience! Great food. Attentive and friendly staff. Very nice experience. All of the food items were delicious. Samosas and chutney were a wonderful starter. We shared chicken tikka and lamb vindaloo. An order of Naan per person is a fair amount (get two of you go on a date). We also got a side of rice and by the time we got out of there we were STUFFED!For a date with a couple drinks each, an appetizer, a couple entrees, and a few extras on the side expect to pay about $100. In this area this restaurant is really well priced.I certainly will be back for more!
A cozy location with close seating. We got the garlic nan, salmon masala, and lamb vindaloo. The nan was delicious, soft and buttery. The salmon was moist in a subtly sweet sauce. The tender lamb had some nice heat.Finished off with the Kheer. Definitely a perfect dish for the end of the meal. Light and fragrant with a hint of sweetness that rounds out the spices from your earlier meal.
Probably one of the best Indian food places in the city. The portions are just the right size and each have a unique flavor that delights the mouth. I had the Malai Kofta and Garlic Naan, tasted very good. The other is a Chicken Biryani, my friend said it was also amazing.
This is not a Naan Event.Good little Indian place with inside and outside seating options.Food is fine and well made. A bit on the bland side, but they seem to know what the neighborhood wants.Servers were good. Okra definitely worth a try.Would go back based upon the mix of items and quality of food. May not be the most exciting sub continent place you will ever go to, but they do what they do well and have a good attitude about the whole thing. Counts for a lot these days...
Fantastic food around lunchtime! We were seated and served quickly (3 of us). Two of us split the chicken tikka masala, while the third had a large vegetarian meal. Each meal had plenty of flavor. The server asked us what heat level we wanted on the masala and we asked for medium. The heat was not at all there. It was extremely flavorful however, so Ill give it a pass.Highly recommend!
Wow my first time having Indian cuisine and I got to say 😋😋😋😋 so flavorful and the guy who served me I feel he was the owner but he was so kind And respectful he asked if i need more rice to let him no at no extra charge. Amazing service and food I will come back again to try more dishes.
This is a very overhyped restaurant, I went there looking at the reviews. I’m not sure who the target audience is for the place, in India this is definitely not remotely close to what we eat. I ordered a very basic dish that’s hard to mess up , “paneer makhni”, one word to explain it is “SWEET”, I’m not talking about mild sweet taste to round up flavors, this was sweet like a dessert!! Extremely subpar. Not going here again for sure, also, if you’re looking for REAL INDIAN food or CLOSE TO REAL Indian food, I’d say avoid this place. For my desi folk - you’ll be disappointed if you went here.
My wife and I and our friend had a wonderful experience. The service was excellent, the food was ready before we knew it, and was of excellent quality. The prices are not low but are in line with what I expect from an Indian restaurant of this caliber. Also, the bathroom was immaculate.
New ownership has made this place a “ must visit” for me. We had lamb kebabs to start, and they were fat and juicy and perfectly spiced. I had chicken tikka, and I suspect it was a total of two full chicken breasts marinated in yogurt and red spices and perfectly tandoori cooked. My better half ordered the chicken tikka masala, and the chunks of chicken breast floated in a lightly spiced tomato sauce with the barest touch of cream. The Naan- the simplest of breads but often over baked and dry- was puffy, hot, and chewy. I’m sorry I forgot to take more photos but we were starved and we demolished everything. The rice pudding is homemade, and was scented with cardamom and saffron. So delicious. Definitely come here before or after an UWS movie, or after work, or even come here alone. A welcoming resto with fabulous food.
It was just okay. It’s close to the natural history museum which is nice and the food came within 5 minutes of ordering. We had the lamb vindaloo, chicken birayni and another lamb curry that I don’t remember name. The portions were not big but the food tasted good overall. I had higher expectations for Indian food in NYC. It was fine for a tourist stop but I am not sure if I would visit again if I’m local.
Amazing food and vibe, It’s a must! Have to try Indian Food while in NYC Central Park… We ordered Lamb chops, lamb masala with naan and it was cooked beautifully and had amazing flavors and taste. The service was amazing, and you can eat as much rice as needed. We decided to order dessert, at first we were like it is made out of cottage cheese idk about that, but it’s not what you think ! Please order Gulab Jamun. It was amazing it’s hard to describe.
I tried this place on a trip to NYC. This place did not live up to my expectations. I tried Chicken 65 and Rogan Josh. If you have a true sense of Indian food, then this place is not for you. The Chicken 65 tasted like you just put it in tomato gravy and it tasted like it was not freshly made at all. The Rogan Josh tasted like the butter chicken gravy was used to make it which is NOT AT ALL its real taste. Spice level is Okay because not only all people can eat Indian spice level. No hard feelings but I looked at reviews and thats why I wanted to try this restaurant which did not turn out as good as it looked. But again, this is a review for those who has genuine palate for Indian food. However, the place to eat outside was pretty nice and that one I liked.
I tell the owners every time how outstanding and how delicious their food/ service / and environment is. So why not tell the google. Everything about Angaar is special. Every dish every time is consistently full of flavor - and I am so happy to be in the neighborhood of the best Family owned Indian restaurant this city has to offer. That’s the type of place you’re getting. You know the owners, the family - and you get to thank them for what’s nothing short of a gift of incredible Indian cuisine. The best. So Stop reading this. Make your reservation/ call in your order. And You’ll eventually Find yourself in my shoes.By the way I never do these reviews. I just truly love these people and their business.Love,The guy who always orders Extra extra spicy chicken masala
Bad Service, waiter never comes to check back if we need anything! Food is average and food portion is less than other Indian restaurants I’ve tried in NYC or elsewhere in the states. I think I spoke to the manger about it and he was not pleasant nor tried to please me in anyway. Bottom line is that I don’t recommend it and it is overpriced for such food and service.
Food tastes amazing. Service was bad, atleast in my case. Was a struggle getting their attention. I noticed them treating locals better than they were treating indian patrons. I guess we indians hate each other even when we arent in india. Best to order take out I guess.
The food is great, the service is terrible. They NEVER answer the phone so if you want to order a cheap lunch, youre out of luck. The direct online ordering only starts at 14:30, so your best chance is going to third party apps like seamless, with the additional 20-30% markup, or walking to the restaurant and order in person while waiting for the food to be prepared.I am not the only customer to complain about the direct phone delivery. Most negative reviews complain about this issue, and let me be clear: there is a phone, theres the possibility of ordering direct, theres people in the restaurant, they just dont pick it up.
This a real gem, came to NYC to celebrate my daughter’s graduation. Search for Indian Foods and I have to say it was amazing. I love Indian food and I’m very critic about it. Service was spectacular. Our server Prahlad gave us an amazing service, very attentive, funny and knowledgeable with the menu items. He suggested our food and everyone loved it. Will recommend this place 100%
When it comes to international cuisine, I usually think America will disappoint me. Theres always an Olive Garden so-called Italian, etc. But places like this remind me that, although very touristic, New York City is a great place made of people from all over the world who genuinely knows how to cook. I had an amazing tasteful belly-huger meal, and for the love of Ganesha, you should try it too.
This is a gem of an Indian restaurant. I have eaten there several times with my wife and daughter. My daughter is vegen and gluten free. She loves the vegetarian dishes. I eat everything and I love those dishes too. But the meat and seafood dishes are more my style. My wife and I really enjoy the lamb chops and the curry dishes. The muligatawny soup is unique - very light and delicate flavors. We are not dessert eaters but their mango flavored sorbet-like dish really finishes the meal off well. We love this place.
We gave it another try tonight just to check our previous impression. After all, Angaar has a 4.7 rating, its only 100 feet from our apartment, and we love Indian food.Maybe (we hoped) it was a fluke that at our last visit, the tikka masala and navrathan korma were both bland, with thin sauces? This time, same thing. Lamb biryani was good but nothing special. Chicken Zafrani was bland. Raita was waay too salty. The biryani is what made this 3 stars rather than 2.Im mystified at why the rating is so high.
Wish they have direct delivery by phone. I was forced to use third party Seamless with insane over pricing and fees. A $50 meal came to $70 after added price to dishes, fees, delivery service, mandatory min tip, and tax. Then add another tip to cover the driver, we ramp to $80. Well last time! If they get true free delivery I will go back, no seamless (or shameless) abuse for me.
Food is good. We order quite frequently for delivery but their service is not good. They missed items from our order and everytime we called to enquire about their menu they were quite rude to talk to. Unfortunately I wont be ordering from them because of lack of hospitality.

2022-07-04A bit pricey for me but really good food. Plates and utensils were all squeaky clean. Great service as well! We dined at their outdoor seating, which was clean and not too close to people walking by on the sidewalk.

2022-05-30Hi we went to Central Park yesterday and this was quite close to the Central Park . The food was awesome and the restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating arrangements!!! Since it was very hot we sat inside . We were 11 people including kids . We ordered paneer makhani, butter naan , garlic naan, onion kulcha, shrimp curry conchin, chicken kadai, chicken 65, paneer kofta . Everything was good . The laccha paratha was not the actual laccha though !!! It was looking a regular wheat naan. Rest of the food was good . Would definitely recommend this restaurant . If you on weekday they have lunch specials too for veg and nonveg

2022-05-03It was tasty and reliable Indian food but last time we went diners were greeted with an overly pushy demeanor and the place was too quiet with no background Indian music. When I asked if they could turn on the background music I was told “no, the boss doesn’t like music”! (What about the customer?) Really felt like we were eating in a pushy morgue so we left.

2022-04-24This place really hit the spot! A small, no -frills-but-still-pleasant little restaurant offering up some really delicious, authentic Indian food that is well-prepared and well-presented. The menu is extensive (curries, Tandoori specials, biryanis) with a wide selection of delicious Indian breads. The pricing is moderate (unlike many Indian restaurants in NYC that have really hiked their prices). The service was attentive and gracious. I will definitely be returning there.

2021-10-14Good Indian restaurant. The chicken tikka masala was very good and so was the naan and roti we got. The chicken korma was ok, but not as good.

2021-08-31I love this place!!! Got the chicken tikka masala and vegetable korma, and both were mouth watering. But surprisingly, the star of the show was their mint and ginger lemonade. This drink was so delicious and refreshing, I would come back just to get a glass. Highly recommend this place for some solid Indian food on the UWS!

2022-07-02Read the negative reviews. This is authentic Indian, I don’t know why some people are not ok with cooks putting a twist on their own dishes but they do it right here. As far as the staff goes they were great! I assume the people who had a bad experience must have come in with an attitude or something. I know when I worked as a server if you seemed like a jerk then yeah, I didn’t care if you were happy. These guys weee great! Food was great! If you’re not a picky jerk then you owe it to yourself to try this place. Oh and the josh is fabulous and it’s the same as I’ve had in other regions. Again, it’s absolutely great.

2022-03-19The place is very small. You may find it cozy. I sat close to the door and every time the door was open, the cool draft would hit us. Food is good and the staff try to please you. I just didnt like that it is very small and there is no way to keep distance. It was hard to hear each other when the other guests were very close to us.

2022-02-17Everything was amazing from the food to the service. We had the lamb tikka masala, garlic naan, and garlic shrimp appetizer. Everything was fresh and tasted incredible. Taj Mahal beer was also very good. Great quality, authentic, quiet place. Will definitely go again.

2022-05-26A bare-bones interior (neither good nor bad). There is seating curbside, streeside, front of kitchen, and one extra upper level. One major problem: I was led to a street-level mini table... where there was food greens on the floor next to the table. I showed it to the host. I moved to the table across from it. They still did not clean up the food on the floor. ...I try a new appetizer of cauliflower. Decent-sized portion and zesty taste. It is served from a square metal dish.Sidebar: The tables across from me are cleaned/wiped down with a chemical from a Windex bottle. Will update... They finally clean up the floor food.I have the chicken zafrani: OUT OF THIS WORLD!! It does come with rice.. Having some pistachio ice cream to close it out.Angaar serves sumptuous Indian fare at an acceptable price point for the UWS. As long as they stay tidy, give them an early dinner try.
