Visited this place by the recommendation of our NYC guide and were absolutely happy with that Friday nights experience! Id said that Apotheke is nicely hidden gem:) The sign Chemist is the only clue that can help you to find the door to this speakeasy bar. Can’t say anything bad about their stuff. Being dressed in our day casual outfits we were asked only about vaccination and IDs. And after that… only fun! This place is small and cosy, fully packed on Friday night. Not much place to sit but if you really want/need to you will definitely find it bc people constantly move towards bar and back. The interior, light and of course cocktails create amazing atmosphere! Drinks are expensive enough but they worth that money. The mixology is sooo inventive. My taste buds were extremely excited)) My recommendation is Tainted love and my man’s choice was Pink panther. Definitely want to return there in my next trip to NYC💘
Feeling like I’m on vacation with this cocktailPerfectly named the Paid Vacation, this mix of Mezcal, Tequila, Hickory-Smoked Pineapple, Cucumber, Lime & Agave, and Habanero Bitters, from @apothekenyc started the night off right. This hidden bar in Chinatown was a great find
Been wanting to come for a long time so I came for birthday drinks. Gets packed really fast. The mixologists take their time with your drinks, but theyre so good! There was a band playing salsa and it was lovely. I would love to come back as it opens to enjoy a drink and the ambiance a bit more!
Make time to go here. A la carte menu, but a really good selection. The bartenders and servers here are just fantastic and the Apothecary theme is taken all the way.We had two bartenders while there, and I cannot for the life of me recall their names. But one bartender was so professional, and happy with the evening he just made us smile even more. The other was very stoic, serious, and determined, with a professionally casual demeanour - not a wasted motion, not a drink out of place. I hope that doesnt sound negative because it certainly was not... there was something about him that commanded attention. He knew what he was doing, and was supremely confident in his ability. Our night there was... perfect.
Amazing drinks that are imaginative and very well balanced- you didn’t even know how strong they were until they hit you all of a sudden, which shows how thought out they are.Great service as well. They lose a star because of the crowd and the space-imagine a bachelorette party with sashes and shopping bags and not enough tables for 95% of the patrons to sit down. However, the quality of the drinks and service were good enough that I’ll be coming back for sure!
The most overrated bar in Chinatown -- warning, its WAY SMALLER inside than the photos would have you believe. There are about 12 seats total inside. There is no assigned seating, you have 12 people sitting down and everyone else just waiting for them to leave so they can take them, its like an embarrassing game of musical chairs for adults. Just walk a few blocks to a better spot please.
Great great great!!! I toke sirens call and was amazing. The cucumber favor is elegant. Is an elegant cocktail. Im feel so happy right now hHaha. Youneed to go at this place. There are live music and a beautiful woman dance naked ( not at all, but is sexy) in the bar.
Great drinks!! Exotic like ive never tried. Also very nice ambience, its hard to spot from the outside because it has no name, but once you’re in, you’re sure its the place. Nicely decorated, and dim lights. We went on a tuesday and there was a band that played at 10:30. It was really awesome, the only thing, very loud. Might be because theres no windows so not much airflow, but at least the band played nicely. Not a cheap experience but worth it anyway.
They also have outdoor seating now. But indoor is better. Good environment and decoration. The drink is also not bad. The Dead poet is must-try. Sitting Buddha is tasty and easy to drink. The avg. cost of the drink is about $20. A bit pricy but it’s New York. It’s a hidden gem in the Chinatown. There might be only one bartender there. So, the time for waiting a drink is slow (about 15mins). Better to have a reservation before you go. UPDATE: pink panther is pretty interesting as it has black sesame flavor but black sesame is not the ingredient. Probably the coconut milk + guava made this flavor. Vanilla saffron old fashion is pretty strong, not bad. Tainted love has strong beets flavor. I’m not a big fan of that. Paid vacation is too spicy for me. Siren‘s call is very interesting. Added squid ink, but very fresh and cucumber.
For the price you are paying (around 18-19$) you don’t get want you pay for. The drinks are good, not fantastic. The place looks great but service from the bartender we had was not that great. She was stand off ish, not helpful and common curtesy is usually to bring out the drinks at the same time- not in this place I guess because my girlfriends drink came 5min after mine.Like the idea but execution needs to be better.
Apotheke was one of the best and most interesting cocktail lounges I have ever been to. The drinks were extremely top notch and not too expensive, the service was delightful and helpful, and the vibe was amazing. The waitress guided us to make unique choices and each one hit the spot perfectly. It’s tucked back on Dowery in Chinatown and you wouldn’t know it was there if you didn’t know about it.The whole experience was amazing. Will be back for sure.
This used to be an absolutely great bar back in the day. Really good looking spot, and the bartenders knew their stuff and made top notch cocktails. However, the last two times Ive come here, the doorman has shaken my group down, trying to get us to grease him to let us in. This despite the fact that both times there was no line. When we wouldnt do it, he made us wait, then came up with an excuse not to let us in at all.If that happened once, fine, it happens. But after experiencing it again last Saturday, this place is just a No Go now. Ironically there was a long line to get into Peachys next door, which I agree has to be the move if you want a drink on Doyers Street. A shame.
I used to live by this place and loved it, especially since they had live music on Sundays. Back in the area after many years and was just left with the worst taste in my mouth.Apparently I asked too many questions for the bouncers…I asked 2 questions about the new club next door.
Ive been to so many places where they have the atmosphere, the vibe is good, and when you get to the cocktail menu all you think is why does this drink have so many ingredients? This bar had all the makings of a typical disappointment, but the difference here is that the cocktails are incredible. I was being cynical with my order and it all changed with my first sip.The cocktails are expensive $18+, but here you get what you pay for. Forget D & C. This is the spot to impress.
There was a review from xun sun a few days ago that accused the bouncer of being a racist. he most definitely is not and i had to laugh at that utter nonsense. any establishment has a set of rules. follow them and stop throwing that word around so carelessly. -fellow asian topu.
Amazing concept - feels like a speakeasy, dark (maybe a little too dark) and eclectic ambiance, incredible variety of creative cocktails. As many have said before me, the cocktails are pricier than usual even for Manhattan (these are $18-22 range) but the creativity and freshly sourced ingredients and the environment make it worth it.Note theres no food on the menu so dont come hungry. Strictly cocktails, wine and beer (but go for the cocktails).Opens roughly at 6:30pm on weeknights, and you should go early if you want to be able to grab a couch and sit down.
Great speakeasy hidden in the center of Chinatown. The theme is carried throughout and the bartenders are exceptional. There is not much room to stand and not many places to sit. The drinks are expensive but worth it. This place is not good for groups but worth the experience for a date night or a quick drink with a friend.
This was a fun, hip place. It was a little challenging to find, but worth the trip. I had Tainted Love. Couldn’t taste the booze, but I could taste the beet. Is it wrong that I love drinking something “healthy” and alcoholic? If I had a little more stamina, I would have tried their kale cocktail. I hate to admit it, but living the “millennial” way — making simple things incredibly complicated — is so much fun. Definitely worth trying if you’re down in lower Manhattan.
Even though I love cocktails, I don’t really go to bars for drink. I occasionally have a cocktail or two at dinner, but that’s about it. But, a place I do enjoy visiting is a speakeasy. Thankfully, New York City has many speakeasy bars that you can visit. This one is located on a street that is narrow, off-the-beaten path, back-alley type area in Chinatown. We got there early in the evening, but it was already crowded in the inside. Through the curtain, you are transported into this mystical speakeasy. It was not easy to get to the bar, with so many people around it, we decided to take a seat at ottomans. Shortly after, a waitress came by and greeted us with a smile.Their theme is Chemist so the bar is not just a bar, and bartender are not just bartenders here. It is a chemists’ lab, with lab technicians, whipping up some fancy cocktail “prescriptions”. The bartenders all have the white lab coat, which makes them extra cool.We ordered Devil’s Playground and Siren’s Call. Beautiful colors, and well crafted. I saw another patron nearby who had a drink with a large flower in (or on top of) the drink, which was really pretty too. I don’t know what that drink was, but it looked good…We had such a nice time here, relaxing and rewinding from the busy week with fantastic drinks. If we were not so full, we would have ordered more drinks. Our server, Julia was really nice, sweet, and helpful. She made us feel welcome and took a nice care of us even thought it was really packed. I would love to go back again to try more of their prescriptions in a near future!!! Read my full review of this bar and drinks on my food blog, foodlovergirl.
As others said, pricey. Went on a Tuesday, got packed pretty quick. Standing room is not an option, if you manage to sit, its nice. Drinks are of quality, but taste wise, hit or miss. Service pretty decent. Definetly talk it through with the server before ordering. For a one time experience, worth it, but not likely for a return trip.
THIS IS AN AMAZING PLACESeriously, cocktails are CRAZYYYYY GOOD, mind blowing, fascinating, complexes, everything that you want in a cocktail!!Location is very nice, with great attention to details, people are nice and they really know what they are doing!!A MUST IN NYC bar scene
Amazing place with unique atmosphere and tastefully designed interiors that looks like a secret after hours club taking place in an old pharmacy. On top of that the most unique drink list I have ever seen and all of the ones I’ve tried were simply delicious! Loved it!
This place is awesome. Takes some skill to find, but all worth it. The pharmacy theme is cool. Staff wears labcoats while brewing your cocktails. Dont expect your regular mojito or old fashioned on the menu though. They serve their own unique recipes which are amazing. Met some awesome people here, shared our drinks to experience all the flavors. Live music finished off the setting... And... Yes, the guy in my picture was performing on the bar... So much for health and safety...
If u love a good time and good poison, head to the alchemists. Apotheke is a speak easy bar nestled in the heart of China Town (NYC). U are tended by chemists and nourished with some unique cocktail blends. Dont go hungry, as they dont serve food. But they serve amazing blends. Dont miss the Deadpoet, Sitting Buddha,Sirens Call,The Dragonfly.Smoked clove, squid ink, roasted seaweed or egg white - imagine if they becoming part of your cocktail. Interesting combination but intoxicating results.Sitting is limited but enough space to stand and dance. They have dress code, so no shorts or sneakers. Wear trendy casuals and dont plan to have rowdy evening (u can be thrown out for indecency).
Reason for going: ♀️/♀️ date night and friendsPros:Love the interiorInteresting music choiceDiverse and unique cocktail menuClean and maintainedGood locationCons:Drinks are more on the expensive sideNot enough seats to accommodate crowdNot handicap accessibleOverall:One of my favorite spots for cocktails. Fills up quickly so I recommend you come early. Takes both cash and card. Wouldnt recommend as a first date because its loud📷@datasianjan
This place is an acquired taste. If you enjoy a lively loud busy somewhat-crammed atmosphere with good quality, although a bit on the sweet side cocktails, then this is the speakeasy for you! On the plus side, at 10pm on a Friday night this place had no line. Overall, the cocktails are yummy, I wish that the music was a bit quieter so that I could have explained to the bartender what I like instead of just ordering off the menu. I’m sure the bartender would have made a good recommendation. The Daisy drink that I ordered was too sweet for me. However the Paid Vacation for delicious!
The Bar is amazing! One of those speak easy bars that located in china town. To find the entrance just look for a sign chemist or chemistry pictured with a blue round-bottom flask.Cocktail price is $18.I tried Devils Playground, it tasted too sweet for me, but it was good.Dead Poet - no idea how it tastes, never tried, but observed the way it was made. They fire up one of the ingredients.RECOMMENDED.
Amazing place! The drinks are very fancy, very creative, and out of the ordinary also a little more expensive than any other bar/Speakeasy. The bartenders are incredible they ask you about allergies and recommend drinks. Seating is very limited, so its better to make a reservation.
Great hidden bar, if you need the password go to their Instagram. We went fairly early on a week day so it wasnt busy and we walked right in. The drinks are pretty strong like most speak easy. The decor is cool but it gets kind of loud. Better for more intimate conversation then big group hang out.
Eclectic ambience, dimly lit by the backdrop of the bar and candles on the marble tables. The ‘prescription list’ does not list prices although they range around $20 and are a great selection of liquors mixed with organic produce, herbs, and botanicals. A great date spot or place to meet a small group.‘The Dead Poet,’ one of their smokey bourbon cocktails, they will light on fire with a torch in front of you as they mix and serve.‘The Devil’s Playground’ is a great choice for an easy to drink fruity gin cocktail served with a fresh slice of dragonfruit and delicious flavor.
Such a classy and intimate little bar in Chinatown. They’ve got great selections of drinks with cool names and the atmosphere of this place overall is lovely. Do come dressed up because everyone was when I visited! Pricey but that’s to be expected of a speakeasy like this one.
Dont expect anything but top notch drinks from this spot. Anything youll try will surpass your expectations. The sirens call is my personal favorite, topped with a mussel shell and a candied pearl. Just dont order your drink with the cocktail waitress from LA, she forgot shes living on the east coast now. Tuesday nights have the best band. Hidden gem in NYC.
This is a speak easy or hidden bar that only needs a door with a slot and to say the password. It has a cool vibe.. Be patience bar tenders make the perfect drink each time. It is a place to chill and pay for the great bar atmosphere. The creative drink menu give you the healthy experience fresh ingredients. While you get your drink on. If your close you need to check off your hip nyc nights spots
Unique and memorable experience. This place is an unexpected jewel in Manhattans Chinatown. We came by it completly by chance, a fortuitous twist of fate. I most say I was intrigue and we all decided to stay in the area just to make it back at opening, even if just for a quick drink. As we made it back and stepped pass the valvet curtain entrance, all 12 of us knew we werent leaving any time soon. The decor, a low, but just bright enough, lighting, a faint smell of incense, lavender and herbs used in the drinks mixes, brick walls on a side, while the other side has a more intricate, elegant pattern, comfortable sofas and seating areas, white coated mixologists and apothecary wall displaying bottles, chemistry sets and herbs behind them, all transport us to a different place in time. Then comes the drinks, with their unique presentations, well made and full of flavor, all making this a place that definitely engages all your senses, at least it did for me. This review cant be complete without thanking our beautiful host, who answered all our questions, provided excellent service and made sure we had an excellent time.
Great ambience, good cocktails and mediocre musicI had ordered saffron vanilla (bartenders choice) and it felt sincerely “okay” - saffron vanilla was bourborn with lime, cinnamon and ice - found the combination very common but somehow it was not the usual one, not in a good senseMy friend had white tiger - that was mediocre as well
Overpriced and overcrowded. Got the Sitting Buddha cocktail which was fine but not worth $19. Actual cocktail bars like Please Dont Tell and Raines Law Room could justify that price, but not this loud, standing room only spot. Save your money and go somewhere else, unless youre here for the admittedly Instagrammable decor.
Ive taken many friends and family to apotheke over the last 6-7 years, its been one of my favorite bars and ive great memories from burlesque shows to live bands and djs. Only very recently Ive realized that some of the personnel at the door can be a little rude and unprofessional. I recommended to some new friends from work that we go there for a nitecap but was met with a very aggressive tone at the door. It was a disappointing moment and Ill hesitate before visiting the next time
Great atmosphere, I think this has been a speakeasy since prohibition era. Their cocktails are creative and tastey. I have been here both in the eveing when it is a normal bar, and for their Apotheke Academey (Prohibition Era) class, and really enjoyed both settings. In the class, the lead bartender was funny, charming, and very helpful. He gave good background on the ingredients, and the science behind the drinking making and mixing ingredients.Customer service was absolutely fantastic.
Came here on a Saturday night. The drinks were amazing, but the atmosphere was a bit different than expected. There was a dress code on the website that it was jacket required, and also saw other reviews about it having a low key vibe. I was expecting a little more intimate setting with the mixologists, but upon arrival there was late 00’s hip hop bumping and a younger crowd in short sleeves packed in the bar. Maybe that’s just a weekend night thing. Nevertheless we had a great time and would love to see what the place is like on a week night.
Outstanding cocktails.Very unique, full of creative twists, and strong enough to turn the night up to 11 in a hurry.A local haunt for sure, and a great starting point for an evening out, before proceeding to nearby LES or Chinatown spots for a continued night of questionable decisions.
Where to go in Chinatown to carry on conversations after dinner? I was debating for Intimate seatings over sweet crispy crêpes or dark and intimate sofas over drinks across the street from the crêpes house. Then I heard the whisper from the pharmacists/mixologists from the Apotheke. So me and my friends walked right into the pharmacy, an $18 Penicillin was prescribed to my temporarily imposter syndrome with two hours personally consultation. Except for the money spent, I feel like a new person again.
When it first opened they used to give prescriptions in order to get back in, which was a fun short-lived concept. I believe it was Orsirius who served me my first drink and it was superb. Since then, theres been Mike who moved to Cali, and Kyle and Joe who opened Percys on Ballard in Seattle, who also left a few years ago. Its been a while since I was last there, but the door policy seemed excessive and unnecessary.Definitely go if you have the patience to get in, otherwise, you can probably hit up other bars that mix just as well.
Fun vibe and fantastic cocktails in this wink and nod to a turn of the century apothecary. Dimly lit and a hushed calm is the atmosphere you wont find in many a bar. Look up and youll see a beautifully ornate chandelier made of colorful flasks of medicines and potions to help cure what ails you. Dont expect to find the establishments name on any signage outside of the entrance. This is a speakeasy after all 😏.
Great atmosphere and great crowd with lots of ppl dancing to 2010s hits... the cocktails on the other hand were nothing short of disappointing.. whereas apotheke is well known for their “absinthe” the taste of sugar overpowers all of their cocktails.. come here for a “good” vibe and a VERY sweet tooth!!
Let me start first with saying the drinks are exceptional, pricey but arguably the best Ive ever had. The ambiance is great, staff was super nice and accommodating basically everything you would want in an establishment like this. But I am not here to talk about any of these things. I am here to talk about something entirely different. When we were sat our waitress informed us that due to COVID all bars are required to serve food. She said there would be a $2 dollar up charge for soup. We were a little annoyed but overall ok with it. The soup was brought out in mugs and seemed unremarkable. Then we tried the soup... and let me tell you that soup was IMMACULATE. The best soup literally any of us have ever had. We asked the waitress to bring us more soup because it was just that good. So overall, Apotheke good bar but honestly if they never served alcohol again and simply sold soup, I would not be upset.
Went there some time ago and found the place too pretentious for Chinatown. Overpriced drinks and rude staff. As an NYC native I love Chinatown and this place doesnt belong there. Dont waste your time or money. There are other places with better drinks and a cool environment more in touch with the neighborhoods they are located in.
Love this cute bar! The drinks are delicious and strong! The painkiller was strong but not overly sweet.I loved it. They also have two TVs for when sports games are on. The bartenders are super friendly also! I also love that the menu includes what kind of cup your drink will come in as well as if it will be shaken, stirred or pour.
We scheduled a reservation 2 weeks in advance but were turned away by the bouncer for no reason. We were dressed nicely, had no bags, and arrived on time. The entire encounter with the bouncer felt really off. I hate to say this, but I cant think of a reason that we turned away other than race. Would 100% not recommend coming here.
Another great cocktail bar in a town with a bunch of them. Came here on a Sunday afternoon not to busy. Our servers were real nice, and gave some great recommendations Got a couple drinks and then left. The place is not that big, but the drinks are pretty good, and vibe is chill. Wish I got to try some of the food though, maybe next time.
I was really excited to come here and try out their fun cocktails. However the place was overly crowded and very clubby. I was anticipating a table service cocktail night, but it was all elbows just to get to the bar. I’d love to come back if it wasn’t so busy! I loved the menu and our drinks were very good. Cool place though.
Awesome atmosphere! The bar has a big casual open space too, which is cool. I had this one snack there that was prosciutto, honey, and goat cheese on a cracker and it was probably the best thing Ive ever tasted. The drinks themselves though were a bit too perfumey for my tastes, though it couldve just been my drinks in particular; Id definitely consider another visit.
One of my favourite cocktail bars. The room is small, but with some patience it is possible to secure a seat. The cocktails are interesting and tastefull and the ambiance and vibe of the place is wonderful. They have live entertainment most days of the week. Live Footage on Sundays is especially recommendable.

2022-03-27This speakeasy is tucked away in a very historical street in Chinatown. If you dont know much about the history of the street/area, then Id recommend watching some documentary or specials on it before because it will add to the experience. Even though the cocktail bar doesnt necessarily have anything to do with that history, having a drink at a speakeasy-themed place in that area is cool.Ive been wanting to try this place for some time, perhaps years in fact. Finally decided to make it happen. Honestly I was a bit weary of how much it might cost. Its expensive - but the cocktails and atmosphere were worth it. The cocktails are generously sized and high quality. Some suggestions:- expect to spend about $20 per drink (including tip)- if you want a chance at sitting try arriving early, even if you have to wait in line for a few minutes. We got here before open and sat easily. However by the time we had finished our drinks the place was packed and people were circling for our table

2022-07-30Nice place and good Music , The waiter was very attentive as soon as we got a table she brought out complimentary shotsAs for the drinks not my favorite, I found both of the drinks I had to better and spicy can be the drinks I chose but I ask around the table and they said the same thing. As for the place very nice vintage look and surprisingly very spacious. Got a table fairly quickly even without RSVP so that’s cool.Well check it out again.

2022-04-25A friend who lives here wanted to go for ages and was excited to try it with me. He was not disappointed. So I reckon if it lives up to his local standards, that’s even more impressive to me.My take? It felt like a cozy speakeasy that got packed real quick. The drinks were great and the staff were super friendly while juggling a billion orders. The crowd was a perfect blend of people who were laid-back to folks who dressed to impress. The “come as you are” atmosphere was as refreshing as the drinks.

2022-02-08Fabulous cocktail bar in Chinatown. We were able to walk right in on a Saturday night ~9pm, though that may be because there was a big winter storm earlier that day. Expect to have to stand for a bit before a table opens up.Lots of unique cocktails on the menu. I liked the Matador, with Tequila, Red Bell Pepper, Cantaloupe and Habanero Tincture.

2022-05-16A really funky speakeasy, would definitely recommend a visit. We were there on a Sunday and there was a really unusual live music session, wouldnt be to everyones taste, but we enjoyed it! Had a couple of cocktails, a bit on the pricey side, but to be expected in a cool bar in NYC

2022-02-23Super cool and chic. Place is very non descript. Inside its quite small. Not much seating. More about mingling.Bartenders were so friendly and accommodating. I ordered an old fashioned and it was way too strong for me. The bartender saw the displeasure in my face when I took a first sip and offered to make me a new drink. Such a sweetheart.I had the fruity Buddha drink which was great. They dont skimp on the alcohol..drinks are pricey but its a cool vibe to check one! It was my first time at a speakeasy.

2022-05-11Cool apothecary-themed bar with rock n’ roll vibe and excellent cocktails. Thoughtful, inventive recipes built by attentive staff dedicated to the craft of mixing a bloody good drink. None of the haughtiness that can sometimes affect such places. Add in a diverse crowd, thoughtful design details and live music and it definitely makes this one worth seeking out. Look for the sign with the beaker above the door.

2021-08-31I love their cocktails! You can’t go wrong.Tip1:Go there as early as possible, seats are limited.Tip2: Sometimes they open a bit later than the google map hour, be patient.Tip 3: Make sure you are at the right door, there’s another bar beside it and easy to get mixed.

2021-12-24Speakeasy vibe and cool atmosphere. Bartenders wear white lab coats and create prescription-themed cocktails. Hush, hush place. Don’t knock on the door, stand in small group near entrance but don’t make it too obvious to others that are passing by. Amazing cocktails!
