I love this store! I am a new owner of a salt water fish tank and everytime I go in the workers are more than happy to answer my questions and assist with what fish I should get or stay away from. Iβm extremely happy with the quality of the fish and service I would highly recommend π
Disappointing. I bought $76 worth of fish. I had checked the water in my tank before purchasing. The tank had no fish in it when I bought. Every day someone would die. The blue Demsey, the three guramis, my 4 bubble rams. Every time I buy from here someone dies. No more sorry. Sad
I saved a betta that was in a tank with 40+ electra green tetras. I am so horrified. The tetras were biting the bettas tail eating him alive. I no longer like this place as one of the workers was rude when me and another customer were complaining about it. It really horrified me seeing that and that they would even do that. Because if you know bettas they usually are left by themselves which is why i took him home and he is doing so much better then being chewed up.
This is by far the best aquarium store I have ever visited. Prices are great, knowledgable staff, and the product organization is very easy to navigate. Seriously, anything you could possibly need is located here, and it is easy to get to. Its either exit 64 or 65 on the LIE north (CR-111), down a couple miles on the right and youre there. Great fish selection too. Some of the species I have never seen in person before. Check it out
They sold me sick fish (ich) and now I have to treat my entire eco system within less than 24 hrs of purchase. I didnt realize it until I added them in my tank.owner was very rude and wouldnt refund. horrible customer service. do not shop here if you care about your tank!! they definitely lost my business and I wont be recommending them to anyone else I know.
Awesome pricing, very helpful staff and a large array of fish, both freshwater and saltwater. All the fish are in pretty nice tanks with appropiate substrates and they very typically are very healthy. Ive never had issues with any of the fish, snails and plants I have ever bought from them. I have also been able to rehome fish for either credit/donation depending on the situation. Always helpful, always good prices and the fish have nice tanks compared to other local fish stores.
So Iβve been very excited to start a saltwater tank and have been visiting here to check out the different fish and ask different questions. I asked one of the employees to inquire about ordering a RODI suitable for my tank. When I went to the counter to see how much it may cost - the owner said to his employee that he was not in a hurry to order them, that he will not be ordering. When the owner noticed I had heard what he said he quickly changed his tune as he was flustered and said βthis will be difficult to get right nowβ. I know I wasnβt supposed to hear the part regarding there being no effort available for the restock of an rodi system. As a new aquarist getting into the hobby, I am so turned off by the fish store and Iβm ashamed it a local one mins from me. I would much rather travel to a store that will ask for how many gallons instead of letting me know their customer service is non-existent. Not only did the owner react in a flustered manner since he didnβt mean to be heard, while I walked away he uttered he wasnβt going to pay double for something just to get there. I have no problem accepting that as the case, but definitely could have done without the unnecessary dialogue.
Ever since I set up my new tank this has been the store Ive visited for my supplies. Their prices are great, the staff is super helpful, their selection is awesome, and the fish Ive gotten from them have consistently been super healthy. I drive by nearly half a dozen pet stores to reach this one and Ive never been let down!
Of all the aquarium fish shops i went to this is so far the dirtiest. The aquariums are poorly maintained , bad odor , and lots of dead fish . Been here 3 times and it has always been dirty. Even petco and pet smart have cleaner aquariums. They have a variety of fish tho but most of the fish i buy here always end up getting sick and dead.. so i started buying fish from other fish shops and my fish has been doing pretty well for 3 months now. The staff are not that friendly either. They dont smile or greet customers. Some of them dont even know information about the fish you plan to get.
In the past I was blown away with how pristine all the tanks were and the variety for fish. I havent been back since december and Im guessing they must be impacted by the covid shut down because I was pretty shocked by what I saw. The back wall of saltwater tanks I always looked forward to seeing were void of anything at all really and in a sorry state. Where there were fish there were also red flags whether it was hints if disease, dead or dying fish. Even just plastic cups with bettas so decomposed it looks they were there for days. I even saw a tank with little baby panda shrimps. . . . And a betta fish? I wonder how many were left by the end of the day? Regardless I decided since I went an extra 30 minutes to come to this store over petco/petsmart to support a smaller business, Id get the fish anyway.I asked for 10 red phantom tetras. Now I can acknowledge that it was my fault for not looking at the bag I was receiving (lesson learned). What I ended up with was 15 fish, on top of that I ended up with 3 different species! 11 tetras, 3 green tiger barbs and 1 zebra danio. 2 of the tetras were dead by the time I got home. Tiger barbs were absolutely not what I wanted and have no place in this tank but I guess Im stuck with them. I honestly have no idea how that employee rung me up with a straight face.To say Im disappointed would be a massive understatement. I think the next time I need anything Ill take the even longer drive to bay shore.
A lot of people said this is the best place to purchase fish, so when I started my aquarium I went here. The first batch of fish I purchase were fine, still living today. On Sunday I went in an purchase two corys Ive been looking for for a while, and they promptly died that Tuesday. I brought them back to the store and the gentleman said I guarantee my fish healthy when I sell them, and thats it. They did give me a puffer fish free of cost, but thats still besides the point. I also noticed they sell tattoo mollys here, and because of that I will probably never purchase a fish here again. Any store that is willing to sell a fish that was mistreated in this way, should not be a part of the fish community. Good riddance, will continue to purchase my fish from Brians Tropical Aquarium.
I am been shopping at this store almost exclusively for almost 25 years. Don - the owner knows his stuff and I have yet to run into the infamous rude red headed sales girl. The selection of the fish is second to know and his selection of supplies is as if you were shopping online. His prices are more than fair and the representation of what is for sale on the market is second to none. I would have to drive to that Fish Place in Pennsylvania to see the selection of equipment. I also have numerous tanks in my house saltwater and freshwater including Discus so I am not a novice. The novice shops at places like Petco and learns through trial and error and then finds Aqua Hut and gains knowledge to be successful. Dead fish - well death is part of life and the amount of fish this store carries and the volume of fish that passes through the store - one could expect a dead fish or two. The truth is I have seen very little lying on the bottom of the tank and deadand I visit almost weekly. They also wont sell you anything that they dont think is in perfect health - theyll hold it for you - but you arent leaving if with it if they dont think its a healthy fish. Everyone I know including the people from 2 local fish clubs I belong to shop almost exclusively there. I would recommend this store hands down and consider him the leading fish store in Long Island
Pretty good prices, broad selection of fresh water fish and sometimes plants.Customer service : hit or miss. im the saltwater guy and im too busy Store owner knows the most but is busy or on the phone and will tell you he doesnt have a store phone because its too busy.Fish: Probably the best selection of freshwater fish but below average care that reflect the low prices. no water changes, nitrates off the charts, sick fish everywhere so youd better have a QT tank. When 30-60% of what you buy dies it might have been better just to buy at petco because they will replace and their care is better with auto water change setup.Seems their stocking is lower and maybe healthier fish on the salt water side.Overall worth the visit but can be a bit depressing unless you like playing Fish M.D
Today was my first experience at Aqua Hut. I received my brother in laws old saltwater tank, filter, etc. I wanted to convert it to freshwater. I brought all the equipment in to them and asked them what I needed to do to convert it, what new stuff I needed, etc. They took everything apart and walked me through what I needed to do to use this stuff for my new freshwater set up. They were able to give me everything I needed to get me going, and walked me though all the set up steps for my new tank. They were so thorough and took the time to help me. I plan on setting up my tank this week and going back there for some fish. Great experience, great customer service.
In my opinion, the only reason this store is busy these days is that the far better store in the area burned down. Every time I go into Aqua Hut the associates are preoccupied with their chores, and will offer bad advice or suggest improper products just so they can get back to what they were doing. Funny thing is that when you question their judgement, some of the associates will give a what do I know attitude. This is funny to me because they have no idea what their customers know. Its a very industrial looking place. If dogs and cats were kept in comparable conditions, Aqua Hut would be run out of town! My last comment (and I could go on) is that youll more likely notice hand-writing on the glass tanks that say livestock isnt guaranteed, choose wisely than youll see prices, or any information about the fish in their tanks. This, to me shows a lack of respect and appreciation for their customers. . . until you are giving them your money, then you might get a smile.
Awful customer service. I am a new fish owner and was looking for assistance in picking fish and no one helped. We asked one guy if certain fish could live together and his response was βuhhh I guess I donβt really knowβ. The guy who looked like he knew what he was doing kept walking back and forth telling us to move every time without helping. Some cool fish but god awful customer service.
I rarely write reviews, unless they are warranted in one way or other. Further, if you are a retail establishment of any sort, JUST being courteous and friendly does not warrant a 5 star review.....that is what I EXPECT. That being said, this place EARNS all 5 stars on various levels. If you want the quick and dirty review:Place is AWESOME! Fresh and marine selection is vast, assorted, and healthy. Pricing is AMAZING, and staff (I only dealt with 3) is top notch! Courteous, helpful, and seem to REALLY know their stuff without being arrogant (cmon, weve ALL been to the place where the guy/girl is looking down their nose at your cute little 90 gallon)..... Just go and check it out! If you want details, read on......I live 4 hours from AquaHut. My in-laws live 10 minutes away......on a visit to them and on a whim I randomly googled fish stores, ended up here, walked in, and was in paradise:STORE ITSELFHUGE for what Im used to! And for what they have, it was all neatly organized, clean, and bright. I believe it was a good (6) 30-40 aisles all loaded with clean, bright tanks. Plumbing looks clean and well kept. If youre thinking what the hell do I care what the plumbing looks like?, its my opinion that the health of livestock is directly related to how clean their system is and how well they are taken care of. If youre maintaining your gear, you are definitely maintaining your livestock . Also, I believe I was told this is Long Islands oldest store, opening in 1969. They are doing something right if they are still open 50 years later.......especially in this hobby/industry. I didnt see with my own eyes (I ASSURE you I will ask if I can see next time), but I was told they have an entire warehouse of tanks setup next door if you are in the market for a new setup.......LIVESTOCKawesome selection of fresh and marine. All your basic favorites, but in all sizes, colors, and varieties, and then a rather big selection of interesting options you (at least me) just dont get to even SEE as an option, unless you wanna roll the dice on internet shipping......not a cichlid guy, so cant rate their stock, but they had LOTS of them/tanks to choose from! ALL sorts of coral from frags to center display pieces. Personally, I keep some discus, and was in my glory, when I walked in and was directly greeted by 6-8 tanks of all sorts/colors/sizes of these beauties. On the marine side, all the staples were present in all sizes, and an (for me at least) AMAZING selection of rarer fish I usually only get to see pictures of, let alone buy. All different types and sizes of live rock, sand, and inverts.PRICINGI felt like I robbed the place when Matt gave me my total for the day.....their pricing is BEYOND fair. I cant speak for their return policy, which from what I can tell (as it IS posted throughout the store) is Choose Wisely, but for what they are charging and the amount of healthy stock they have to choose from, I wouldnt feel cheated if I lost one here and there.....this IS nature at work, and Mother Nature offers NO guarantees! Have no fear because their fish all looked healthy, even after a 5 hour car ride home in the back seat.STAFFI only dealt with 3 of them, including the owner , and they all were on the same page: courteous, helpful, and knowledgeable. I definitely saw the owner throughout the store while I was there, as he was helping various people, and didnt find out he was the owner until I was leaving. I dealt with Matt the most while I was there, and let me tell you, EVERY LFS needs a Matt! He knows his stuff, is obviously passionate about the hobby AND job, and helped me without an ounce of pretension, judgement, or arrogance. Even though the store was pretty busy, he still gave me a tour, some advice, and then bagged everything for me, all while helping other customers throughout with equal attention .All in all, personally, this is hands down the BEST LFS Ive EVER been to on all levels! I will definitely be visiting my in-laws more often, just to go here!
TheOlder man, if you catch him On a good day, is quite helpful and knowledgeable... but Good luck with that. Hes rude, obnoxious and occassionally sexist. There is an Indian guy with long hair that literally sees a customer, or (maybe its just me) and turns and walks the other way. There is z Skinny Indian guy as well, who is amazing! He knows his fish! Hes his stuff and is always eager to help. He is the ONLY reason I went there today. Their livestock has infected MY fish. Then, they all died. As a matter of fact I havent had a fish last more than 3 months. And, trust me, my tank is pristine.
Im surprised with the experience I had considering the ratings. When my wife and I first enetered the store a guy had been sitting on a stool glued to his phone and the stool (not behind) the counter. We said hello and were ignored then we continued on to the fish food area where we happened to run into an employee who we asked about some tetra food. After asking and he suggesting a different food type I mentioned how I had read this type of food can cause algea outbreaks, he said ( well i dont have that problem and i have 40 tanks)!. ok buddy was just asking. At any rate we continued looking around, then decided to buy the food we chose and leave. We waited at the counter for about a minute, even after (stool guy) looked at us several times while we were standing at the counter with our items on the counter. I had then seen the original employee, made eye contact at the counter and was ignored again, so i simply left my items on the counter and left the store.Shortly after i had gotten into my car the stool guy comes quickly out the store searching the parking lot for someone im assuming my wife and i since nobody else had left the store. We didnt steal anything buddy. Im a firefighter and I was wearing a Department sweatshirt with my pager on my wasitband. And my wife had her firefighters Wife sweatshirt on. Seriously??? were the ones you have to be concerned with in the store? REALLY??Ill never consider shoping there again. Thanks for the fake ratings google.
Ive been researching the saltwater marine fish hobby for 2 years and never took action because every place Ive been to was extremely expensive. 6 months ago I discovered this place and seeing their prices is what got me to actually start up a tank. Don, his son, Tony and two other employees talked to me for hours and went over every one of my questions. Theyre extremely helpful and the prices are the lowest on the island. I challenge anyone to check prices online and then come in the store and find out how much theyre selling it for. Theyre at least 20% lower then their near-by competition and about the same price as the lowest prices online. Ive been to every fish store in suffolk and nassau (literally) and Ive given up on checking and comparing Aqua Huts prices. When it comes to service, there are a few on the island that are just as helpful, but all of them are over priced. When it comes to the selection, you need to find out when their shipment days are and get there that day before they sell out, because they sell out quick. Who ever gave this place a low score should be ashamed, I will defend this store as if it was my own. Dead fish is a part of the hobby, these fish get imported from thousands of miles away from the other side of the world in bags with a quart of water. Its a miracle that they survive in the first place. If the fish dies by the next day, chances are you dont know how to pick out a fish. If the fish dies within a week, chances are you dont have a healthy tank. I will be a life long customer and Im curious to find out where these google users are going that offer better prices and better service.I bought a fluval 406 canister filter from here for 169.99 when it first came out, the lowest price on amazon was about 249.99.I bought a fluval sea reef&marine 24-36 LED lights for 159.99, the cheapest I found online at the time was 189.99, this is just a few examples. I would never waste my time on writing a review for any business and I dont think I ever have. Im a firm believer in these guys and I hope they stay open for a long time because selling everything as low as they do, I dont know how they stay open. For the people who complain about them not having a phone, actually take the time and walk into this store, youll find out why they dont have phones. Theyre constantly helping customers and have no time to answer phones.Every single one of my fish, I bought from this store and theyre all alive and healthy. Same goes with the equipment Ive bought. Give these guys a shot especially if youre in the saltwater hobby.
I am not sure what the truman guy is talking about. It must be personal. I went there Saturday with my son for the first time. I found the owner and the staff extremely polite. They had variety of healthy fresh water and salt water fish. Everything also priced very reasonably, especially the fishes. Definately going back there for more.
DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY AND TIME!!!!!! I got about 20 fish on Thursday and 15 of them died I asked for help and no one would take the time to help me biggest waste of money needless to say this is not my first tank and Iβve had maybe 1 or 2 die off the day of or weeks later when I asked if then could help me out I was told no DONT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY.... pay alittle extra and go to country critters the great team over there and will take the time to actually help you
After years of going to a shop on the South Shore, I decided to look a little closer to home to supplement my aquarium addiction. Aqua Hut is no frills, but it does the job. In fact, I appreciate the fact that the entire store is just fish tanks; its not filled with useless stuff.I bought a stand for my new tank, and after the owner (I assume) saw me struggling to fit it in the back of my 4 dr. sedan, he was kind enough to throw it in the back of his van and drive it to my house...free...and refused to take money. After that, I swore that they would get my business. When it came time to stock the tank, the staff was knowledgeable and friendly. The fish I purchased have all been healthy, and vibrant. The only negative is that on occasion, there are dead fish in a few of the tanks- maybe they just got a delivery? Not sure, but I would definitely reccomend Aqua Hut.
Very friendly staff , the most EXOTIC fish you will find and such a fast turn around you will see new fish every week...the staff Don ,Ernie ,Richie ,Matt and Carmela very good people . Going there Ive gone from having large cichlids, arowanas, to flowerhorns, then to discus and now salt water fish only and a saltwater reef tank. I practically live here! Lol
Used to be good but not anymore. You can tell they are going under by the lack of variety of fish as well as healthy fish. Look for the white spots if you dont want other fish in your tank to get infected, dont go by what they tell you- observe yourself and youll see and make sure they feed the fish infront of you if you are really bent on buying the fish there.Like the comments below- not interested if your not buying but in my case i did end up buying a cannister, sand and salt and couple of other things. Absolutely do your research before purchasing, if you see what you want there then buy it, if you ask them theyll just sell what they want to get rid of.Like i said earlier not the same place anymore-just like people mentioned below-they would try to sell you everything.Fish youll see they dont really have any and ive visited the location multilpe times to see if there stock changed. Youll find the ich/white spots (which is curable but why go through the hassel IMO) even though they say they dont have it. Any filteration media you get make sure it is properly sealed-as you would find some of them opened. All in all avoid if you can, the old reviews over here are not an accurate description of what your going to experience when you visit it.
Great prices, old school set up wich to me is perfect, great selection, great quality on live stock, no other place in long island can beat these guys in prices, personal favorite spot when i want to get something diferent live or more aquarium accesories best prices around worth the trip every time.
Huge Warning to this store !First off - learn to answer your phone. Why have one if you dont answer it??Second - employees (except one of the guys) are rude, especially the red haired girl. She barely gave me the time of day when I had questions, like I was inconveniencing her.Third and MOST IMPORTANT - I recently bought a live plant from this store for my ten gallon, divided betta aquarium. It has been less than 5 days and 4 of my 5 males have died to Graphite Disease (Mycobacterium). Be warned when purchasing from this store. I tried to call to speak to a manager about the issue. I am completely at a loss having four of my gorgeous bettas die so quickly. I wanted to make them aware that they have this in their tanks, but since they cant even bother to answer the phone, I just want to warn the public.I bought my tank and many of my supplies from this store, but I will be searching for another place to buy my supplies (provided my last betta survives). Between the rude, bitchy employees and now this horrible event with my tank... Im done with this store.
Well i came here expecting what others said about the customer service. I was trying to buy fish for my sister for her homecoming. Well the gentleman with the glasses assisted me and answered my questions and provide all that was necessary for my new aqua cube ( btw was a good deal for 225$ considering petsmart wanna sell it for 265). Anywho i came next day and had the red haired girl assist me with some fish. She was not at all unpleasant as she was really nice and explained what i needed to do because my new tank was cloudy...and shes cute which was a plus. Those that rant about customer service were probably just some ignorant people. people who leave comments are either extremely ignorant and cant get it their way or the few who are just satisfied with the service.
Looking for rare healthy fish ? Thu is the place to go the most knowledgeable staff youll find at any store between ronkonkoma and middle island. It took 12 stores to find my polypterus, Aqua Hut had them in stock and the staff helped me through the whole process.. highly recommended Thank You Aqua Hut and keep up the good work.
Poor fish I feel bad the salt water tanks are so poorly maintained most of them are enpty or you cant even see through the glass.. the fresh water are almost as bad... seems like just a bunch of kids work here they should def be trained on how to clean n take care of the tanks instead of justy hanging at ther front talking..absoluly discusting
Staff is usually to busy to help. If you buy products there pray they dont break. They will tell you to to take it up with the Company that manufactured it. A box of the same set- up is kept on hand for spare parts apparently because of problems with their product before. Why sell faulty products?
I have been there many times...Pros: Good selection, usually helpful staff, best pricesCons: No telephone- wtf?, often not enough help, fish quality is hit or miss (often many dead fish in the numerous tanks) plus they make no effort to acclimate new fish- seems like the delivery comes and they get dumped right in the tanks for saleOverall...best prices, good selection, be patient when they are busy, and choose your fish wisely!
Best fish store on the island...i have a 4500 gallon koi pond and i found this place last year not expecting a large pond equipment section, i was wrong good selection and even better prices i have up until now bought most of my pond supplies online but the prices here are the same if not better...my new go to store for all my pond equipment

2022-04-03I would use caution about buying their salt water selection as it looks improperly maintained. As some tanks contain dying or even dead urchins. There are fish that have been left dead in the tanks, have ich, or have symptoms of stress. The bigger display tanks have been wiped out of corals besides zoas/polyps. Their coral selection has declined in the past couple of months or maybe even about a year or two. There is also cyano bacteria, green hair algae, bubble algae, and even aiptasia that can be found in the tanks.

2022-04-07Not the best looking store in town, hit or miss on live stocks. Reason I gave it 5 stars is because of the prices, cant beat the deal anywhere else.
