Au Cheval definitely lived up to my expectations. A special thank you to our server Tan, who was extremely attentive and just made our experience — she’s awesome. We had their cheeseburger and added an egg + bacon, which I recommend getting. It was very heavy, so consider splitting it with another person. To drink I had their blue martini, and I have to say they have some of the best blue cheese stuffed olives I’ve ever had. The ambience is dark but vibrant, and seems to always be busy. You would need to book in advance. One thing we thought was strange was that they charge $2.50 per person when reserving, and that doesn’t go towards your meal. Otherwise, you’ll have a great time!
A friend recommended this as an alternative to 4 Charles Prime which you can never get a reservation for.We also shared the Thick Cut bacon as an app. I’mma be disappointed this weekend with my at home sad….thin….crispy bacon. Tisk tisk Trust me and just order it as soon as you sit down...even before drinks. Its that good. We got the Wings minus cilantro (ewww) and they were great, fried crispy and the sauce was just the right amount. The crew also ordered beef tartare and they definitely need to double the amount of bread provided for that...unless youre supposed to heap it on?Had to try the burger..I mean...come on its Dry Aged and $30...you gotta. After the taste test, it was a tough call between the Dry Aged Tavern Cheeseburger & the Shaved Prime Rib Sandwich. Id almost say the Shaved Prime Rib Sandwich took a partial lead just cause of the au jus on the side...but burger was delicious. Ordered the baked potato, thinking it was just one...so was shocked that two came out...maybe they heard incorrectly when taking the order? As youll see below no photos were taken of the sandwiches..we dove right in...Hands down though the best part was the Chocolate Cream Pie….OMG…I need to find that recipe ASAP! We also tried the Key Lime pie which was delicious too however not as good as the Chocolate Cream Pie.And just saw they have a brunch menu? Will be looking to make a reservation for that.
I’m going to have to apologize in advance for the terrible photos or the complete lack of adequate photographic documentation of my visit. The food was so good I ate it all before thinking about snapping a pic. So what you have is a blurry picture of the ambiance and a half eaten sandwich. You will have to rely on my words to judge this place. Simply put: it was bomb. Great service and good food. I had the steak tartare, which was amazing. My friend had the shaved prime rib sandwich, which was great.
I had been wanting to try Au Cheval for a while, so my husband and I decided to stop by one Sunday. They do have reservations on Resy but you have to pay a small fee for person, so we decided to just get there early to beat the rush. They open at 10 AM and we got there at around 10:45. Even though it was half empty, the hostess said there was one table but wed have to leave by 12:30 for one of their reservations - which was fine because that was plenty of time.To start, we had:Griddle Blueberry Muffin (griddled hot, strawberry jam, salted butter) - I never thought about griddling a muffin but I may need to start doing this. It also came with some clotted cream, and a tiny pitcher of melted chocolate, but that was too much for me. I liked it with just the butter, jam, and cream.Chopped chicken liver (salted butter, toast) - I love a good liver dish (I was the weird kid who liked liverwurst) and this one was right up my alley. It was creamy and served with perfectly toasted bread, and a side of delicious cornichons to cut the heavinessWe really wanted to try the bone marrow but they said that its indefinitely off the menu because of supplier issues. Womp womp. For the main, we shared the double cheeseburger and added bacon + egg. This was probably the most perfect fried egg I have ever seen. I didnt love the bacon because it was pretty salty. Brioche is not usually my thing because they tend to get soggy and fall apart but this brioche was diesel. It was able to withstand a runny egg without becoming a mess, and I was impressed. Overall, it was a great burger. Was it worth $30? That Im not sure of. Im glad that we ended up sharing this because it was pretty heavy. Half was the perfect size, especially since we had already gotten some apps. For drinks, I had the Guava Gose breakfast beer, which was light, fruity, not overly sweet and not too sour. It was perfect. They have a lot of other summer beers that sound good too. My husband had the bloody mary, which tasted pretty basic but I appreciated that they tried to fancy it up with a variety of pickles. We also did a pickleback shot because why not. It was a good thing we had all that heavy food to soak it up because these shots were HUGE - probably twice the size of a regular shot. They aint messin around at Au Cheval.Im glad I got to check this place out, but its probably not a place Id go back to again and again.
Really good food and a great vibe! Loved the Burger and the Steak with Fries. Food was better than the one we had at Au Cheval in Chicago, still a bit behind 4 Charles, but super tasty and could easily get a spot, so its a good trade off... would definitely come back.
The burgers here are everything you want to believe it is. Every seat was filled so make sure you make reservations days or week in advance. The restaurant is located in lower Manhattan in a super cool ally. The place is perfect for date night and hanging with friends. The drinks are also tasty. the staff was so kind and generous. Thank you guys can’t wait to visit again soon.FollowIG @dom_eats_nyc
LOVE LOVE LOVEEEEE THIS PLACE! This is mine and my boyfriend’s new favorite place. We absolutely love the service here. The staff are very professional, upbeat and so helpful. They are very informative when it came to their food.I love the fact that you can watch the chefs while you sit at the bar. It is a cool idea how this is becoming the new thing! The food is phenomenal. The steak tartare is absolutely dynamite! I have been a couple of times. I make the trip from Bergen county, NJ just for this restaurant. They do get busy during dinners, to which I am not surprised. I do recommend booking a couple of days early just to be safe.
The burgers here are everything you could hope for! And we also got chicken sliders which were cooked perfectly. Overall, this restaurant is worth the hype and worth the wait. Could not recommend this place enough for burger enthusiasts. We got in luckily without a reservation but we went in super early and got bar tables. Which were fine and worked perfectly.
Wow! Im always a bit sceptical when people rave about a best Burger. This restaurant did not disappoint! The burger Dry aged tavern Cheeseburger was amazing! Worth the flight from London. Seating was good and the atmosphere was great.Theres a good wine list and we had a bottle of Whitehall lane red to accompany the burger. My only negative were the fries were just way too salty to the point they we inedible. But the main event fantastic!
Hands down one of the best restaurants in NYC. Straight forward menu with great drink options. Everyone was super friendly and personable. You don’t have to look for someone to some by and service you, the whole staff circulates and will help you with anything. And to quote my brother “BEST MAC AND CHEESE OF MY LIFE.” Am I already booking my next dinner here? 100% yessss
Definitely one of the best burgers I have had in the city! Most of the table ordered the tavern burger fully loaded, cooked medium and we were all raving about it. The cognac sauce was a welcome addition to the dry aged beef which was very flavorful and the burger was cooked perfectly. The maple pepper bacon added a touch of sweetness and the egg yolk makes it messy but an incredibly savory combination. For appetizers we did the General Jane’s Fried Chicken and it was the perfect thing to split amongst the six of us (6 pieces). The chicken was well crisped even after being drenched in an incredible tangy / sweet BBQ style sauce. The sauce by the way was so good we saved it to have with the fries which was a combo I’d strongly recommend.Drinks: I ordered the espresso martini and a Tokyo old fashioned which were both quite good. I always appreciate the classic espresso martinis without any cream liqueurs. Then the Tokyo was strong (as expected) but great drink to wrap up the dinner.Ambience / service: The place overall has a dimly lit classy vibe with round booths that give it a lounge feel. While the booths were a bit tight for 6 there are plenty of 2 and 4 tops that would be great for a date or a night with a few friends. Service wise the staff did an excellent job from when we walked in and were seated with half our party to the server being very attentive it was all great. Admittedly we likely overstayed our reservation as we closed out the place, but the staff was very pleasant about letting us stay longer which was appreciated.TLDR:Order the tavern burger fully loaded, cooked to your preference and the jane’s fried chicken you won’t regret it.
I dont even know where to start. Ive been living in NY for 35 years and have dined at many of the worlds top restaurants. Ive traveled the world for food yet just down the road from where I live is one of the best eating experiences Ive ever had. The food is unreal, service - not just our server - every single person that helped our table was a total delight. The ambiance and location are absolutely beautiful and trendy. You feel good being there. I expect to be returning weekly for a while. **You must love beef!**
Ambience was amazing ! This place is a vibe, and trendy! Get a cheese burger with everything on it bacon and a fried egg! This is hands down one of the best burger fine dining restaurants in the city. Drinks were great as well. Make sure you wear something semi business casual though. If you can’t get into 4 Charles which is understandable come here instead! Downstairs is their speakeasy bar but right now it’s only open for booked events.
One of the best hamburgers of my life! And a wedge salad that sets a new bar. Great cocktails too and a unique venue and vibe. Solid service and friendly staff. My only callout is the clientele - lots of upper class bros. More homogeneous than I expect or like in Manhattan tbh. Very, very straight crowd, tho everyone seemed friendly and courteous.Love that the entrance is tucked away and will 100% return.
The bacon and egg cheeseburger was hands down the best burger I’ve ever had in my life. My boyfriend said the same about the tavern burger (and he eats a lot of burgers). The mussels were also delicious, along with the garlic aioli for the French fries. Will recommend this place to anyone who will listen!!!
Undoubtedly the burger is terrific. However, the rest of the experience was disappointing. The service was very slow, with our burgers taking an hour and a half to come. Even the cheque took around 25 mins to come after we’d asked for it. A real shame since given the hype and price you’d expect a class act all round.
Definitely worth the hype! Simple yet super tasty burger. The classic is just perfect. If you want to indulge, get the egg and bacon but it’s not necessary imo (and I normally love eggs on a burger too but the patty flavor is already so rich so the egg really is redundant. Bacon is super tasty on its own). Also ordered the regular fries which were perfectly salty. We ordered the mille feuille for dessert and although it’s a get pic, we ate maybe a quarter of it. Kind of a let down in terms of flavor. The pasty tasted like a stall croissant. The cream was overwhelming. Individually, the cream tasted good but I think it’s too much. I would pass on this next time but everything else was amazing.Service was also superb. Hostess, server. Everyone was happy and kind.
Definitely make reservations before you come, they get fairly packed.3 of us were here on a Saturday night for burgers and it definitely hit the spot! I ordered the single with bacon and an egg, my girlfriend got the dry aged burger, and our friend got a single burger with lettuce wrap and an egg. Everything was cooked perfectly and the portions were huge, especially the dry aged burger. A bit on the pricier side - came out to around $130 before tip with 2 sides of fries, 2 beers, and a soda.Would definitely come back to try more of their menu
Cheesebuger - excellent, especially loved the fluffy bread.Mille-feuille - Light and flakey puff pastry, tasty custard. Bigger than I expected. The beer selection surprised me, as there were many more options on tap than the menu listed. I appreciate that the bartender let have half-pours of two different beers (IPAs by Grimm and Barrier), and charged me for one - - even many dedicated beer bars dont allow half-pours like that!
The Lower Manhattan outpost of the Chicago icon, Au Cheval, retains almost all of the best aspects of the original restaurant. Their signature crusty, well-seasoned smash burgers are cooked perfectly. The fries are crisp, and there are a host of well made cocktails and beers on tap to quench your thirst. The only thing lost in translation in the Manhattan location is the intimate, clubby feel of the original Chicago setting. The space is nicely decorated and well suited for large groups, but the large number of tables and the lofty interior feels less personal and more contrived.Fortunately, the service here was prompt and friendly, and the large size of the space makes for wonderfully short wait times. Most importantly, if you’re looking for a great burger, Au Cheval’s NYC location will not disappoint.
One of the most delicious in new york city. It’s an extremely luxurious take on a burger especially when you add in the runny egg and thick cut bacon.I had recently already had a burger so I went with the chilaquiles filled with eggs, salsa, guacamole, jalapeños, pickled onions, and cheese. Great combination at a good price with absolutely massive portions. Only able to eat about half despite sharing with 2 people so took the rest home. Delicious second and third meal at home.
I was really excited to try the Au Cheval cheeseburger, and I was a little disappointed overall in this spot. While they required proof of vaccination (yay), it was really crowded inside, and I felt uneasy the whole time about it. Additionally, it was kind of awkward to very much be a part of our neighboring tables meal. Our server was LOVELY, though, and I cannot praise the service more. The cheeseburger however was just ok considering how pricy it is? The meat was FAB, but the bun was really big and overwhelmed it, and there was tons and tons of cheese/mayo sauce, which isnt my preference. If you like mayo and a big bun, then youd probably love this burger, but for me, I just wished the burger patty itself got to sing. I do have to say, the green salad that we ordered as an afterthought was absolutely fantastic! Super delicious shalloty, vinegary dressing.
Has this place gotten even better? I went back after a 2 year hiatus, and the burger and fries are still the absolute best. The caesar salad was on the lighter side and deliciously citrusy. Service is perfect and the space is large with a warm, casual vibe that fits the menu. This restaurant group knows their business, which is why Au Cheval is always busy.
If you guys are not ready to receive ppl because of you brunch, dont open at all. I got denied ordering an appetizer because you want to conserve the bacon for later. I mean, Im not a customer then? Whats the difference between me and the night customer? Au Cheval is one of my favorite restaurants and being treated like that on a place I love is outrageous. For a famous restaurant, thats not being prepared at all.
One of the best burgers I’ve had in a while! Ordered a burger with an egg and bacon which seems to be their signature menu. The price is not bad either. It’s a nice ambience with a high ceiling, a great spot for brunch :) The service was also nice. I’d definitely come back here - it’s my new favorite burger place.
Interesting design of industrial meets French cottage, with outdoor indoor look. Nice vibe, good service, friendly staff. Clean bathrooms with very nice smelling soap. The chopped liver with buttered toast was yummy, especially the toast.Cheeseburger was done exactly right, with all the ingredients coming together well (appreciate the chopped up red onion vs sliced). Fried Bologna sandwich was too salty for my taste, the texture of the fries was on point but, they were definitely over salted & I don’t shy away from salt. Overall a positive experience.
What a joke. Came in by myself and sat at the bar/prep area. Order an IPA forever ever that was pretty good. 45 mins passed and the food I ordered never came. Waitress finally stopped by to see if I needed another drink. Instead of telling me she forgot to put my order in she said they are really busy. Not really. Grill was barely being used.
What a great place and epic burger. Classic cocktails updated and they did a great job of tweaking on so that my wife would enjoy it more. Not sure there is a wrong choice on the menu. I do regret not trying the bacon on my burger but the sunny side up was perfectly cooked.I had the roasted bone marrow. If you like rich flavor enjoy this meat butter. It was served with an red onion jelly that was a perfect compliment to the rich flavor.
Incredible meal, great ambiance and service. We had the ribeye and king salmon - the salmon was cooked perfectly, but it would have been nice to have a larger portion. The roasted bone marrow app really stood out to me - I ended up spreading it on bread and topping with red onion jam. Id it recommend to anyone. We finished up with dessert - the root beer float and the mille-feuille. Both were much larger than I expected, and could easily be shared. It was the first time Id had the mille-feuille, it the perfect amount of flaky pastry and puffy cream.Au Cheval - Ill be back for certain.
Delicious food and very chic interior. The bone marrow and burgers were fantastic. Both dishes could use a little less salt though. I don’t know if I’d call it the “best burger” as all the hype around this place goes, but it was definitely one of the top burgers we’ve had in the city for sure. We also ordered the kale caesar salad, but didn’t enjoy as much as the other two dishes and the greens in it (the baby kale and lettuce) were kind of drab. We’d definitely return for more and try to grab a drink at the Little Cheval bar downstairs. 😉
I took my husband for his birthday and he loved it and so did I. He ordered the Single Burger with bacon and an egg, I had the Single Burger with bacon. The burger bun was soft and buttery, the patties (and the single burger included 2 beef patties -the double burger has 3 patties) were well seasoned, they added this sauce that included cut up small size onions, and finally they placed two medium thick size slices of bacon (mouth watering, juicy, and just the right amount of maple on it😋). We also ordered a side of hash browns and French fries. The fries came with a garlic buttery sauce as well as cheese sauce, while they both taste good the burgers were the main attraction. I had a sparkling rose which was a bit dry and not worth $15 for my taste but was still good and my husband had the tequila sour, that drink was definitely worth the price and exceeded our expectations. Overall we loved this place and will recommend it to anyone. The ambience was laid back with a simple small candle lit on each table and hanging lights. It was diverse with the people who were in attendance. Its a place you can go hang out with friends, lovers, family, anyone accept small children after late hours. P.s the bathroom smelled good, was clean, and had 3 stalls.
Alex is literally the cutest. First time dining here tonight and I love it when you have a server whose energy is cute and also attentive. He saw me eating the cherries of my oaxacan old fashioned and brought me another to show love. Food was divine! Service is a steady pace so come ready to take your time and settle in. I mean that in a good way. Yum. Get the tartare, fried chicken n dry aged burger. Great date spot xo
This place is accessible by going down the middle of an ally. There is a mini bar downstairs that bumps music and serves cheeseburgers. The main attraction is upstairs where there restaurant serves burgers all night long. The vibe is amazing. Dim lights and low music play as chatter fills the room. The prime rip French dip sandwich was unbelievable- the best I’ve ever had.
Very nice large space with a high ceiling, very friendly service... smiles all around. Went at 1pm, was surprised to be able to walk in and get a seat for 2 with no wait. but not too many tables open. Double Cheeseburger, Brooklyn Lager and Hash Browns will set you back $48. I wasnt asked how I wanted my burger temperature wise but its assumed that you accept medium, otherwise its well done. Its a very good burger, maybe better if I opted for the egg and bacon on it. I really enjoyed the hash browns.
Is the burger as good as everyone says? Yes, it is. We were told not to ask any questions when the host informed us that a single cheeseburger has two patties and the double cheeseburger has three. We ordered the honey chicken for the appetizer. Amazing. We had two orders of fries. One was over salted but the other was spot on.The vibe also sets this place apart. It’s sort of like a modern, yet classic take on the diner. High ceilings, black elegant columns, intentional lighting - very tribeca. Would definitely return in my free time (I went with colleagues during our lunch break). Would love to try the cocktails next time. This service was excellent. Such an attentive and engaging staff.
Very Close to the Chicago original. This one, takes reservations though which is awesome.IMO, the blueberry muffin is one of the highlights now with more accoutrements!Burger is still very good, even though the double is just a couple bucks more, the single is just right for me (ratio of meat to bread).Salad and breakfast sausage was okay, would pass the next time around.Cold brew was strong as expected.Fried chicken is not what youd normally expect. Sort of a general Tsos fried chicken, not recommended.Bone marrow came with numerous bones but almost no marrow in them
The worst experience! We waited for our order to be taken for 30 min and then for it to arrive for 1 hour 20 min. While people around us got sited, fed and left we were waiting for my dry fish and burned vegetables. No apologies, no nothing - they said it’s because a lot of people came in. So expect it to be 3 hours dinner while half of this time you will be hungry.I would not recommend this place!
The space is beautiful, the vibe and staff great, but Im sorry the food is mediocre. Way too much hype. The burger is greasy and the meat overwhelmed by what they call a Dijonaise sauce that has no acidic bite to it (the Dijon mustard is famous for). The fries are nothing to write home about either.I also tried the chopped liver, it was quite tasteless though the butter soaked brioche bread was excellent. The coffee was excellent, best part of the food and beverage experience.I have no doubt the lines will continue as it is the hot spot but it is not because of the food...sorry.
Came here with much anticipation of the burger having waited so long and read numerous positive reviews. The burger is served as a statement, unadorned aside the knife that holds it together. It tasted more like a salt lick (could not taste much beyond!), and without any sides included, leaves one yearning for more. Having said that, the restaurant space is warm, intimate yet open with the exposed brick wall, old style furniture and chandelier fixtures.
Incredible. Great atmosphere with excellent service. We all ordered the burger and it exceeded expectations, which were high to begin with. Would definitely go back again and recommend everyone reading this to go. Reservations are very tough to get but we showed up, put our name down, hit a bar across the street and sat down an hour later. Overall great experience.
Au Cheval arguably has the best burger in Chicago and now, in NYC. Heads up, a single cheeseburger at Au Cheval is 2 four ounce patties and a double cheeseburger has three four ounce patties. The crispy potato hash with duck heart gravy and eggs is great too. The wings are outrageously delicious!Portions are very large. Fun fact: they serve one porter house a day. If you want it, get there early or call up and ask ever so nicely to request it be put to the side for you. It might just work! The unsung hero of the menu is the bologna sandwich. Au Cheval cures the bologna in house. For desert, the Mille Feuille is my favorite. Can’t go wrong with anything here. The waiter Jon is the man too! The entire team is really amazing. So happy Hog Salt brought Au Cheval to New York!
A slice of Chicago in NYC! Just like their original midwest location (which is phenomenal) the burger is what you must come here to try FIRST. Yes, the wait is pretty lengthy just like in Chicago. Any complaints from people here arent aware of the history. However, lunch so far is the prime time to go! Was able to walk in and get a table in about 15min during prime lunch time around 1:30p.FYI their Double Cheeseburger consists of THREE patties and the Single Cheeseburger consists of TWO patties! I felt I had gotten a bonus meal with that alone. Adding the egg was a nice texture and the thick juicy bacon was the kicker. Can probably do without, but definitely worth trying. That with fries and a drink and you are done eating for the rest of the day. The amount of food and joyous feeling reminded me of eating an Emily burger out here, but on a different level. The bologna sandwich is also a tower of goodness to try.Located down what feels like an alley (hence the name) its a pretty cool location. Feels a little hidden. Pretty spacious restaurant for NYC and they have a coffee spot that opens at 8am as well. Vibe is very chill and the servers were very nice and attentive. So far so so good, Chicago! 👍
Awesome burger with excellent service and atmosphere. Would definitely recommend any burger aficionados to try it out. Highly recommend getting the thick cut bacon! Very hard to make a reservation as they get booked quickly, going for lunch on a Sunday was pretty easy for my group.
Just an ok experience. I should start with we went here for an early seating for dinner on a Saturday. When we arrived the first two things we asked for were not available. The first was a beer, the other was the fried chicken. At 5:15 on a Saturday dinner service it makes little sense that they would have ran out of beer and fried chicken. Next we ordered the chopped salad with bacon. The bacon is awesome, as was the ranch dressing. However, there were noticeable chunks of salt in the salad. I was literally spitting out little shards of salt. I have never had a salad that I would consider salty, let alone too salty- which this was. The burger was solid. Though you get the distinct vibe that the sauce on it is an attempt at an animal style sauce on a gourmet burger. Good thing it is very tasty because otherwise it would have been a tinge sad. Either way burger was very good. The fries come it at a whopping $8 per order and werent worth their salt. Slightly under, they were fine and not more.Ultimately the food here is solid. But be careful of salty salads and slightly undercooked fries. Definitely not worth the $60 per person for a salad, fries, and a burger- even if it is in an alley in Tribeca.Wait staff was very nice and on point. They were very pleasant to deal with.
We tried the 32oz porterhouse today with the French fries and fried chicken order. All were very good. Only gripe I’d say was the porterhouse needed some more flavor but all in all I was very pleased. Our server Daniel M was very nice all throughout the evening. Thank you for a nice dining experience handsome. Great tatts too.
When I have visitors from abroad, I am often requested to introduce them to American cuisine restaurants which I find rather challenging at times. Given vast amount of the culinary offering in the New York City, Au Cheval stands out rather well with their wide range of beer and spirit offerings. Highly highly recommended for burgers and bone marrows!
Great ambiance, friendly service, hip crowd, good location and a simple menu.I’ve heard so much about the one in Chicago so my wife and I came here for burgers. We got here at 5pm on Saturday and were seated at a booth right away. Our waitress was friendly and prompt. I ordered the root beer which was AWESOME! We ordered the single cheeseburger with bacon (I dont understand the egg thing but people love it) and the beef marrow. The burger is okay. It’s not the greatest. It has two patties, melted cheese, some mystery sauce and pickles. The patties are well flavored and the brioche bun is bouncy. The bacon on top was a little much. The burger is okay without the egg or the bacon.I also had the marrow with beef marmalade. The amount of marrow was generous. The beef marmalade is made with reduced pectin, which I thought was creatively done. It’s a bit expensive. The toast is good.Next time I will try the fried chicken. The dessert menu is lacking. Did not get to try any drinks as it’s a sober weekend.Check out the bar downstairs.
Their bologna sandwich > any other sandwich in NYC. There, I said it. Place is bigger than the one in Chicago, there’s a downstairs bar which is legit, and the have a coffee bar which is awesome. The service is attentive, the space is beautiful and if you want to make it easier on yourself, make a reservation.
Great hamburger, its like a McDonalds quarter pounder taken to perfection. The outstanding flavors are the cheese and some sort of sauce with onions greatly balanced with the bun and the double patty. Expect a long line to get in, but half and hour waiting worth the experience
Very tasty place to have a good time. The burger is the way to go. We also got a side of fries and they were very delicious. If you have to wait for a table, you can wait at their basement bar and thats a great time too. The bartenders are nice and its a cool vibe. Ill be back for sure.
Its the best burger Ive had in Manhattan but I havent had the Black Label burger at Minetta Tavern yet. Whatever idiot is telling everyone to get a burger with everything needs to be fired from Eater. I choose egg and aioli. Choosing bacon and aioli works. Choosing just egg or just aioli is fantastic. Choosing no extras is also fantastic. Just dont put all three on there like youre at Applebees. Cmon man.
The burgers are fantastic, make sure you get it with the egg and bacon. Side fries were good, crispy and fresh. The kale salad was surprisingly good and dressed to perfection - great pairing to all the greasy items on the menu. Their dirty martini was excellent, strong and tasty with the blue cheese olives. The general Janes fried chicken is a pass, drenched in sauce, it was overwhelming.
Okay. So you came to Au Cheval looking for the best burger in the country. Im with you. Heres the thing. Its not NOT the best burger. It might be. But there are SO many incredible burgers out there how do you decide? So Im going to say it is objectively in the Top 5 burgers in existence. Now the subjective... thats where you come in. Ive had this burger in both Chicago and now in my hometown of NYC and frankly its ridiculous bordering on magic. Just a heads up on the nomenclature: a single is actually a double, and a double is actually a triple. I didnt go to math school but I do find that confusing. Doesnt matter. If youre all about that beef then go for that double. But if youre more about the complete onslaught on your tastebuds, go for the single and get the egg and bacon - BUT - get the bacon on the side. Why? Because its incredible in its own right and you should taste it on its own before you put it on the burger and potentially lose it in all the other flavors. Now if you were NOT looking for a burger here I think youre crazy, but in that case try the fried chicken. Its sweet and spicy and delicious. The atmosphere at Au Cheval is dimly lit and lively. Theres a dull roar of voices on a background of loud music, but in a good way. Get there early and head downstairs for a drink at the bar. And if you want the whole Chicago vibe order a beer from Half Acre Brewing. Or if youre feeling fancy go for the Old Fashioned. It might benefit from less ice or one giant cube, but they balance it perfectly. These folks arent messing around. Go have yourself a night.
The second location of au cheval Chicago and it does not disappoint. The burger is so good! Bacon is thick cut like a 1/4 inch thick. Downstairs has an interesting bar and the bathrooms. Service was excellent. Not sure if the phone is working yet so gotta go in and put your name in and it does get a little pricey but again it’s worth it for the burger.
A hidden gem by NYC Chinatown Canal street. Newly opened popular restaurant from Chicago. Their vibe is superb, from the moment you find the restaurant to the seating, youll have a memorable experience. The food menu for brunch is limited though, not many varieties but acceptable. There is a min. 45 min wait list if you havent reserved before arriving.
Offshoot of the very popular Chicago burger joint.Good burger, great bacon, really good sliders. It was good, but in a city with so many great burger choices I’m not sure if I would revisit Au Cheval again just for the burgers. Definitely a great vibe for a Friday night with friends, and honestly I think the whole is greater than the sum of its parts - come for the burger, stay for the vibe, beers, service, fries chicken, and the sliders, and the mille feuille (!!!!)Good for: casual burger night with friends, casual date night, burger and beers.
Found!Located in a dark alley just South of Canal street this sport is a crowd pleaser.. It actually feels like the Chicago location, though a bit darker and more seating. The menu is mostly the same and includes a variety of incredible meat products including the burger and bacon, or both together! Food is great and you are better off making a reservation on RESY before noon, perfect lunch spot! For more great reviews of the New and Authentic visit TheLoupe!
Hidden burger joint on Cortland Alley in Chinatown/Tribeca. The alley is a normally dark, dirty, thoroughly NYC location, but over the years seems to be an increasingly popular place for wannabe photoshoots, so it had been easy to avoid. The restaurant itself is pretty big, but the sign outside is tiny, so you could easily miss it.Tip your waitstaff good, they deserve it. The food is decent and a large selection of booze. I was most impressed by the fries. You have to order ala cart, but super close to good frites and a sauce close enough to the famous Manneken Pis sauce in Amsterdam that Ill be back (fried bologna sandwiches? Yes Please!)
So good! One of the best burgers I have ever tried. Patty and bacon perfectly cooked. It doesn’t have many “extravagant” ingredients, but it is certainly well made. Congratulations on making an awesome, beautiful burger. They also have a good variety of beers to enjoy your burger with. Cheers!
Went here early on a Tuesday night. To get to the front entrance from Canal Street you have to go through Cortlandt Alley, which reeked of urine. Reservations only available before 5pm and after 9:45pm so we decided to do walk in for table of 2. Got a table quickly. We ordered the roasted bone marrow, crispy fries with fried farm egg, and signature cheeseburger with bacon and egg.The bone marrow was deliciou - not as heavily salted as other places Ive tried so it tastes meatier. The toast was think yet toasted well, and the beef cheek marmalade was delicious, like a sweet meaty jam that goes well with the toast. The crispy fries were not so crispy because of the moisture from the egg on top and the Mornay sauce. However the Mornay sauce as well as garlic aioli were delicious. The cheeseburger, called the best burger in America, was on point. The patties were seared well but still very juicy. The added bacon was thick and caramelized. The burger also had tons of pickles, if youre into that sort of thing.Wish I had a bigger stomach to try the porterhouse with foie gras, potato hash with duck heart gravy, and the foie gras scrambled eggs and toast. Will have to return to try those.
Finally made it to Au Cheval for my birthday dinner and Oh My God. I would recommend ordering the burger and the potato hash and splitting it with somebody. Their fried chicken will also knock your socks off! I was so full afterwards. No room for dessert. There is a bar downstairs if you need to wait for a table.
The NY location of a Chicago darling Au Cheval is super cool. It is buzzing whenever it is open and the bar rocks. We came in out of the rain and got crazy lucky without a reservation. The tables are super close but hey, make friends! With a decent wine in hand we grabbed a few dishes. This is a place I would come back to in a heart beat. Please follow @joannasable on instagram for more food and travel fun.
Brendan Sodikoff is both leveraging and reinforcing the Au Cheval brand with this addition to his restaurant empire. The cheeseburger is juicy, the thick-cut bacon melts in the mouth, and the fries are served with an addictive garlic aioli. The place is a spacious, sleek, upscale version of the original Au Cheval on Randolph Street in Chicago. No 2-hour line in front, fast and friendly service, leather seating, snug wooden furniture. Oh, and their High Five Mocha is a sweet gem.
Fast service and burgers as delicious as their original place in Chicago. The space is really gorgeously done with a bar downstairs that feels like a boîte/saloon they named TBD (the bar downstairs) serving small eats and drinks.Upstairs the vibe was beautiful and moody but loud and hard to hear your friends from across the table.Surprisingly fresh and good salads and fried chicken was pretty tasty (though I could have easily been having a bucket from Bonchon), the dessert (particular the Mille-feuille was one of the best I had in a long time. Arrived whole and with a small pitcher of chocolate drizzle. Freshly piped sweet cream on layers of lightly browned pastry puff, worth the trip just for a taste of it.
I am guilty of coming here twice in 2 months! Love their double burger - its the best burger ever! On my second visit, I added bacon but had to pull the slices out because it really didnt do anything for the burger.Definitely order the double burger on your first visit - as is. The dijonnaise sauce is definitely a secret weapon and fries are a must - youre welcome in advance!Needless to say, Ill be back.
The burger really is excellent, with great fundamentals, but the bacon pushes it over the top - its thick, perfectly between crunchy and chewy, and extremely flavorful. The bologna sandwich is a worthwhile alternative as well - its more one note, but its a good note! It holds up quite well the next day as well - a great, if indulgent, lunch. Top marks to the house-made pickles as well - I actually preferred the bread and butter pickles to the pickle Spears, which is unusual. If youre not with a large group, I highly recommend snagging a spot at the counter. It offers an incredible view of the kitchen which turns the entire experience into lovely theater. And dont sleep on the mille-feuille for dessert. Huge, and impossible to finish for us, but served with a lovely flourish, and still crunchy on day 2. Comes with hot fudge you can pour over!Plus, everyone in the restaurant just seemed incredibly pumped. We had a great time.
Tucked away down an alley, the New York outpost of the games Chicago burger palace doesnt disappoint. Bigger than the Chicago location, there is ample room, but expect it to be packed. Prices are high, but its NYC, so what do you expect? Plus the burger is as good as youve heard. Also enjoyed the fries with the egg and Mornay sauce. Service was great, the vibe is nice, and you really owe it to yourself to splurge on the burger here!
So d@** good I had to go twice in there days. I wish I could have taken a picture of the burger but it evaporated from the table the minute it was placed in front of me. Everything about this place from the decor, ambiance, musuc, food is the absolute best. I originally visited Au Cheval in Chicago. This location takes the same recipe but absolutely perfected it. My favorite restaurant in NYC
This location is a welcome addition to its counterpart in Chicago!Seriously one of the best cheeseburgers Ive ever had, order it with the egg and bacon on top. The bacon is thick and delicious, egg perfectly fried. Fried chicken is a bit sweet, but very delicious. The crispy potatoes with a duck heart gravy are OUT OF THIS WORLD. As are the crispy fries with an egg on top and another sauce (what its called is escaping me currently). Bologna sandwich is good, as is the chicken liver (which comes with really good toast). The staff were incredibly friendly and excited. We had Alexa, and will be asking for her any time we go.The ambiance is really nice, a dark chill vibe with a really interesting mix of music to boot.Im sure this place will be packed with long waits real quick. Welcome to NYC Au Cheval!
My boyfriend said prepare for the best burger of your life. I wasnt prepared. One of the best dinners of my life! Food and drinks were decadent. Service was excellent. It was too hot & stuffy when we walked in, but when the crowd started to dissipate the temperature was better. The atmosphere is wonderful, whoever picked the Playlist is a genius, and we had a WONDERFUL time! I get why Carrie & her date puked, cuz you will be so stuffed when you leave. Thank you Au Cheval, we cant wait to come back!!! ❤❤❤
Walked in with Henry our service dog and the hostess attitude changed immediately from the prior seated people...She automatically gave us no choice of restaurant seating just bar (at a corner dismissed from the world) or NO FOOD!!! At bar tables on the other side of the restaurant!!!! UNACCEPTABLE1st Service dogs are allowed at any table at any part of any restaurant2nd Dinner was the goal why even bother offering a table with NO FOOD WILL BE ALLOWED3rd is okay at bar but not at a table????I am sorry you lost my business for good and in these times of solidarity restaurant operators should be attracting business not turning it away!!! And if you are too busy...learn how to keep that future business coming.... do not just ride a moments wave...
This was the first time to the Au Cheval Diner here in NYC. I went to the one in Chicago and was blown away by the food. Went here for lunch and had the burger, it was great. Not as good as Chicago but the service was Impeccable and tenfold was still good. It’s a little off the beaten path, I had someone urinate a couple of feet away as I waited outside. A little off putting before a meal.
Cannot say enough good things. Caught dinner here before getting on a red eye back home. From the atmosphere to the food, everything was on point. My server Lola was knowledgeable about the menu and made excellent recommendations. Got the green salad, bologna sandwich and side of french fries. This ain’t your childhood bologna. The filling was so creamy and rich, made in house; I didn’t know there was a way to do high end bologna! Highly recommend coming here, you won’t be disappointed.
Almost a speakeasy burger joint which was originally made popular In Chicago. Everyone in the NYC food scene now knows about the egg oozing, thick cut bacon, double cheese burger. Such a well established “glorified diner” joint with an unbelievable friendly staff. The waiters/waitresses want to make your meal unforgettable. Order a $5 beer to start. We got the hot honey chicken to start and ordered fries to share with two burgers with the addition of egg and bacon. Burger costs around $25. This place should be on everyone’s burger hit list. It’s not a meaty burger, more of a cheesy bacon burger. And believe me you will feel your arteries closing at the end of the night.
We came here opening week when you couldnt make reservations. We came at opening and waited an hour to put our names down and then came back five hours later to eat. We hung out in the bar downstairs and had the chicken fingers which were really good and Bobby Flay was next to us so everybody had to wait.Since they have a reservation system now, I wont comment on the wait. The food was delicious. They were out of dessert but we had the foie gras eggs (so good!) and the signature burger. Will definitely come back again!
Among the best burgers in New York City. Great ambience, excellent service, very well done interior. Menu is certainly on the pricier end -- but the food is excellent. If youre looking for a special spot for brunch or dinner or are just in town and want a taste of New York (Chicago style, I suppose), you could do a lot worse than this. And -- the in-house coffee shop is super cool -- Tokyo Style.
So I came here because my brother went to the location in Chicago. I had the single burger it was DELICIOUS the service here is beyond amazing. Danielle was my server but everyone was check-in on me making sure I was having a great meal. She even gave me a complimentary chocolate dessert. I 💯💯 recommend this place. I will be back for sure.
Came back to Au Cheval with a friend from New Zealand who requested for an American burger and that is what we all did. Our group got seated after 15min wait on Thursday evening at 6pm, it was busy already but our host and server were on top of everything. We all got single burgers and one double burger plus the fries - perfect. They have good selection of draft beer and cocktails, liquor so it’s great! For dessert try the Mille Feuille, it was so amazing!
Nothing better than working with a co-worker and showing them a favorite food stop of yours and them liking it also.....lunch @ Au Cheval... such a cool spot, today was the shaved prime rib sandwich with gruyere , au jus & creamy horseradish......this was so good and tasty I cant wait to come back again.. prime rib was delicious with melted gruyere and healthy dab of horseradish encased by the toasted bread . Definitely gave a texture and crunch as I dipped each section of this sandwich in the au jus....actually I dipped every bite of the sandwich in the au jus....total completion of awesomeness ... my coworker order the kale salad with grilled chicken with ranch dressing , side of fries and was thoroughly happy and enjoy their choice and my selection of this place for lunch. Such a great place...#meecheatsny #canalstreet #chinatownfood #auchevalnyc#timeout
Theres no question that yall need to experience this place (superb food, service, ambiance, etc.) and become regulars if you are local but intrigued by the Small Cheval setup in the basement. Very cool place as evidenced by the photo. I understand it opens for business at 5pm but not sure of the days. Sazerac cocktails are the bomb!!
Went there on day 3 of their nyc debut, it was just myself for lunch. Got their around 12:20PM, waited around 15 minutes for a seat at the bar. You have to put your name down for a seat at the bar the same way you would for a table. I could live with it.Waitress was quick to take my order and within 15 minutes of taking my order the food was out. I stuck to the cheeseburger, which is 2 - 4oz patties on a role with a blend of American/cheddar cheese, I opted not to go for the bacon, cause it was lunch and have been trying to lose weight, I guess that is also why I didn’t opt for the double cheeseburger.I did find it weird that they call it a double cheeseburger, but you only get 1 additional 4oz hamburger patty. Maybe my math skills aren’t good. The burger came on a brioche bun, which is great everywhere.I also ordered the fries, which were nice and crispy with the right amount of salt to keep you drinking. I stuck to water though. The dipping garlicky mayo for the fries was amazing, so much so I spread it on my burger bun.The burger was priced at $17, the fries $7 or $8.All in all I’ve spent a lot more on lunch then $25 plus tax and tip, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to go there. There are amazing burger places all over the city. My expectations were higher than they probably should of been. I have had the burger at 4 Prime Charles and it was impressive, but in the end it’s a cool spot with a good vibe and crowd, hopefully it’s there for a while and they enter burger bash.
So great to have Au Cheval in NYC! I went in for lunch and had no wait (shockingly). The move here is definitely the burger. I had the single burger with egg and bacon additions. I actually don’t think the bacon was necessary as the burger was phenomenal by itself. With bacon and egg, the burger ended up being around $25 so be warned. Totally worth it though!
We get single burgers but they dont give fries on side u need to order extra -1 and we sit after us 2 3 table sit and they also order burger , some how their burger came before ours. When we ask to our server he said let me check , we waited 45 minute for a burger. Restaurant look so good and fancy , burger and also our EXTRA ordered fries was delicious but service was so bad.
If you dont have a reservation its about a 3 hour wait time. known for their delicious burgers, couldnt go this time because the wait was too long but came 2 years ago and its delicious. will try next time..MAKE A RESERVATION!!! they dont even do takeout so you cant order the burger to go even :(
The food is pretty good, very decadent. The ambiance is nice, with low lighting and an eclectic mix of musicI had the double cheeseburger with bacon and the bone marrow. The burger came with 3 patties and very thick slices of bacon. It was very juicy and the bacon melted in your mouth to provide a rich and decadent flavor. The bone marrow was also good, but Id say the burger is the star.I give it an 8/10
So happy that this place re-opened. Absolute best spot on the city hidden in a little alley. All of the best food of 4 Charles but in a more low key an upbeat environment for a more causal night. The service was impeccable and they even treated my boyfriend and I to an extra app and round of drinks. Will definitely be back!
Was looking to go here since the first day they opened up. Was able to get a reservation on my first visit. This burger is one of the best I have ever had. Everything about it was perfect. I will definitely be back for more. Fried Bologna sandwich is a great starter too if you want to share with a group. Great cocktails as well! Id give this more than 5 stars if I could.
Hands down one of the best burgers I’ve ever eaten. I was a little taken back by the price but when I took that first bite into my double burger with bacon and egg I melted like the cheese that was seamlessly strewn about each patty. The service was immaculate, Jonathan and everyone here is awesome. Would love to know who designed the restaurant itself, it’s so beautiful and perfect.
Best burger Ive ever had. And Ive had a few so far.Advice: if you feel hungry, dont hesitate, order your burger with bacon and egg. I promise you wont regret your choice, specially when it comes to the bacon. Never tasted a bacon so thick, yet so tender, juicy and intense. Perfect smoking. The place is very cool inside, all looks made out of wood and the lights are not too bright, so the atmosphere can get quite intimate. The spotlight is on your plate. Youll find out why.
Recommend a visit - very very good burgers and the we really enjoyed the gravy hash! However, I’m not sure I agreed with our waiters suggestion that we shared entrees. The burgers and sandwiches weren’t super conducive to sharing with a group (unlike the sides, which were good portions so maybe that’s what he had meant?!). The desserts could also do with a bit more love, the menu was very short and nothing really took our fancy, despite a few of us being in the mood!
Yum. Overindulgence at its best. You can order a half order of the fried chicken if you want. Great service. The bologna sandwich is awesome. So is the double cheeseburger and kale Cesar. Next time, I’ll get the cheeseburger without the bacon. The bacon, while delicious, was overkill. Probably better as a stand-alone app. Ambience is great, too. Nice space and good acoustics. Don’t forget to check out the downstairs for a drink. Or you can simply order a simpler burger and fries down there if you don’t want to wait for a table.
Great service, and atmosphere. The menu is small but interesting. I had a green salad, and a few bites of my sister-in-laws cheeseburger. Both were really excellent. We all shared some fries which were outstanding. Good drink list, with historical cocktails, craft beers and some select wines.
I have been to the Au Cheval in Chicago and was hoping this was just as good. It did not disappoint. The bacon, egg and cheese burger is seriously the perfect burger! The fries were a great compliment. The only warning for newbies is that the single is a double and the double is a triple! If you love a good burger you owe it to yourself to try this place out!
I went to the Au Cheval in Chicago and that was a 5/5. This is a 2/5 for the following reasons: 1. This place grossly overcharges. I get it, it’s Manhattan, but the prices are absurdly more than what Au Cheval in Chicago charges for no good reason. $65 for a burger and fries with drink and tip? Seriously? 2. adding a Covid surcharge when the bill is already expensive. Bake that cost into the actual menu prices. Don’t charge me extra because you can’t pay your workers properly. If you can’t pay them, you shouldn’t be in business.

2022-06-26Really dope restaurant with a great ambiance. Definitely a top tier spot to grab a burger. Make sure you put your reservation in or you might not get seated. The service was great. The burger was absolutely delicious and cooked to perfection. The egg and thick cut bacon really topped it off. The combination of all those flavors was mouth watering. The fries weren’t bad, I got the egg on the fries just to be extra and see if it gives a unique taste but it’s not a necessity.

2022-02-08I enjoyed their good burgers. Dry aged and classic double cheese burger were really great. Juicy patty, delicious pickles. I will come back again. Good ambiance and nice staffs.

2022-06-13I luckily got a seat for myself at the bar and ordered their signature burger with a fried egg. The service was a bit slow but the staff were really friendly and helpful. The burger itself was quite good and the experience overall was enjoyable. The fries come with some sort of sauce that was fantastic. When I went to the restroom, I saw a speakeasy of sorts, so Ill need to return at some point.

2022-04-05One of the best burgers in NYC! A beautiful restaurant. Love to come in and get seated by the bar where you can see the action in the kitchen and the food being made. The downstairs bar which recently reopened is also great too.Have to order their burgers- absolutely delicious. Keep in mind their single is actually a double. Overall, always a great spot.

2022-07-05I love this place. Hands down thee best burger around. I used to work in Chicago and went to that location first. Fell in love. The burgers are perfectly cooked. The cheese melts down each patty. The thick cut peppered bacon can be eaten all on its own, that’s how good it is. Once you cut the burger the yolk runs down all sides of the burger adding to the deliciousness. The macaroni and cheese, superb. Don’t cheat yourself. Go all out and be sure you or someone with you gets this side dish. It’s creamy and a bit spicy. The baked potato (loaded) is also something you can’t miss as a side dish. Melted butter, sour cream and bacon bits all in the warm baked potato. Delish. Please don’t eat before you have dinner or lunch here. You’ll need the room.

2022-01-11Came here for the root beer float… but the burger was the best ever - melt in your mouth bacon! (My partner ordered w/ lettuce wrap instead of the buns). Mussels were fresh/ very plump meat and flavourful. Overall food quality was fantastic.Came around 6pm without reservation and we were seated immediately.

2022-04-27My buddies and I have a great appreciation for exceptional burgers. This speak easy diner takes the cake. I really like, off the beaten path allure to the location. This place is definitely a date night or group spot. Oh, the burger was absolutely delicious. Im a hard critic when it comes to restaurants using a double patty method. I find its a lot hard to cook a thick patty to juicy perfection. First bit you dont immediately notice the thick cut bacon, but after a few seconds it calmly rolls over the tongue. The thick cut bacon is a meal by itself but its so tender it melts in your mouth. After a few bits you forget you didnt put ketchup on it. Frankly speaking you dont need ketchup, the salt content and multiple flavors make it so you can eat as is. Why screw up perfection! I definitely recommend this restaurant. When Im back in town, my friends and I are definitely going back.

2022-07-12Very good. The bacon is thick, sweet, smoky and peppery (5 half slices). It has a different kind of taste compared to other thick cut bacon, in a good way. The green salad was great. The chicken and pomme frites were delicious and smothered in gravy. It was an entire half chicken. I got the double cheese burger with egg and more bacon. It is a monster burger. The patties arent super thick, but combined are ample. It falls between a steak house burger (Luger) and Shake Shack - in the best possible way. Im not one to add an egg to my burger, but I did here. And Im glad I did. The egg adds a richness and makes the burger almost velvety. The bacon brings the sweet, smoky and pepper. Theres pickles, cheddar and dijionnaise to round out. Its big and hard to finish. But worth every bite.

2022-03-10Wow! I organize a monthly burger meetup to try all of the best burgers in NYC and Au Cheval sits at the very top. I got their burger with the egg on top and added bacon which is a thick slab. The meat and all of the ingredients were perfect. Plus it tastes like a traditional burger, only better. The fries were good too, but overshadowed by the burger. I cant recommend this place enough. I havent tried anything else on the menu, but if you are going for the burger, get ready to be very satisfied.
