Cute little shop with the wafting smell of butter and baked goods that you can get from a few steps out of the door. The chocolate croissant hits the spot and the merveilleux minis were a good size for a treat.Other than that though, there’s not a whole lot of diversity in what they offer. Your best bet for seating is two small benches in front of the door - so it’s more of a grab and go kinda place.
I visited right after the bakery opened in the morning. The croissant is amazing: flaky, crispy exterior with warm, buttery, chewy interior. I also had the small chocolate chip brioche which was good. It was a warm bun that was not too sweet. The customer service was friendly and explained the pastries available. This is one location of a European chain. The prices are standard for West Village.
Tried the Le Merveilleux, LIncroyable, LImpensable minis, and Meringue twist. The minis were interesting but not memorable to want again. This was my first time trying meringues and it was hard when you bite into it and melts into pure sugar in your mouth. Both desserts were too sweet and didnt have enough varied textures. The sugared brioche was good.
Ive been a customer of Aux Merveilleux de Fred since it opened a few years ago and, apparently, I love their products. My poor review is about their service. My recent experience is indicative of the personnels rudeness, disrespect for their customers, and lack of professionalism.I went to the West Village store to purchase their $45 cake and, when I arrived, there were two customers inside (who were together), so I stayed outside, waiting, as its indicated on the door. I ended up waiting for more than 10 minutes while a line started forming outside. While we were waiting and complaining about the situation, we were able to see how the employee was enjoying her chat with the customer in the store. Finally, I entered the store, mentioning about the long wait. The employee seemed annoyed, made a face, and exchanged some comments in French about me with the other customer that she had been chatting with.To my point about the 10-min plus wait, her response was that I dont have to buy from their store at all.So, to a long-time, repeat customer who is willing to buy a $45 cake and has been waiting for more that 10 minutes outside while the employee has been chatting with a French customer inside, theyre being completely unprofessional, essentially vulgar.
The pastries and bread here are amazing!! 🤤🤤🤤 I have never found fault in anything I’ve tried!!! I’m obsessed with the Nutella filled pastries!! The staff are always so kind and welcoming and I love that you can watch them create from the windows!! Even if you have to stand in line it’s not long and even if it were it’s totally worth it!!! You will be hooked after the first bite!!
Love it. We first came across Au Merveilleux by accident in Paris and were pleasantly surprised when they opened the NYC outpost in our hood a few years ago. Everything in this store is exceptional -Buttery flaky croissants and the namesake desert is absolutely divine.
I’ve been living in the neighborhood for eight years and these were the best croissants ever. This being said by someone who frequently visit Paris. I just went in this morning and they looked different, so I was concerned. They smelled different, too. I don’t know who the new baker is but this tastes like an American dinner roll. It’s awful. Terrible! It’s dense and doughy and chewy. Zero flakiness. Hardly any butter. And much smaller! You need to get a better baker - you’re going to ruin your legacy! And New York doesn’t put up with subpar. No wonder there wasn’t a line outside this morning…
BLEW MY MIND! Super small French bakery with amazing interior . The chandelier was a great touch! Kind of a hidden gem! Never heard about them, the smell of the pastries in the oven is what caught our attention. Both pastries were delicious! Lots of attention to detail. Almost made us feel as if we were back in Paris!!! 💕💕💕
Its one of the few places I accidently found when I just arrived to this city about 3 years ago. Back then, being a student, I ordered two pastries to go and tried them on the street. It was absolutely delicious. For the last three years of time in the same city, I havent found any dessert place thats better than this one simply in terms of taste. I came back there today, ordered a bunch, took them home to enjoy better. It feels different than how it did three years ago, but tastes still damn good.
Probably the best french-style bakery in whole Manhattan. Pastries expensive, like any other croissant place in America , but this time its really worth it. Never had croissants and brioches so good and so crusty in America (French guy speaking, so believe me, they easily compare to our croissants, no doubt about it! )
Love the bread and I love the attitude of the folks that work here. No nonsense, so dont come in there acting stupid with your dog in hand. (its a bakery, people. We dont want your dog fur in our brioche.)I asked the manager what was good and what they had available, and he directed me to the sugared brioche. PHENOMENAL and I dont even like bread. So good, must try!
A fancy French pastry shop. Even the baker/cashier is French! The window setup is dazzling, but it can be a little hard to discern whats what for first timers. Staff is helpful with that. I highly reccomend the cream puffs, but Im less of a fan of the meringue. Its definitely worth a try!
The goods are good and the decor is SO fANCY! THE BIG CHANDELLIER IN THE MIDDLE SETS THE MOOD! no 5 stars because the customer service is not always consistent: sometimes you get greeted, sometimes you get an attitude. its you and your luck and how the person behind the counter is feeling on that day.In conclusion: food is good, decor is amazing customer service is 50/50can do better
I came in with my family towards closing time and was pleasantly surprised. We actually walked past the store, but the items on display caught my eye and we turned back. I had no idea what the items they sold were, aside from the bread. The lady up front took her time explaining the desserts and made some recommendations about her favorites. I never felt rushed, even though they were clearly done for the day. Great customer service and delicious desserts! We enjoyed a meringue thing with white chocolate on it and my kids loved the chocolate chip bread. Perfect balance of sweet and savory.
I cant recommend this place enough. The interior space is quite small so they make full use of their large windows to display their beautiful pastries to entice passerby. If you think you dont like meringues, I would still encourage you to try one of their merveilleax. Their brioches and waffles are also perfection. I came near closing time so the wonderful lady gave me extra croissants :)
An average bakery; brioche doesn’t taste like a proper French one. Meringue was nice :)Another thing which was rather discomforting - a dirty apron one of the bakers was wearing. Don’t want to make any conclusions on the hygiene standards for their products based on this, but it did raise questions in my head.
Just making my way downtown...then I saw pastries!Best detour ever, I had no idea what I was getting but meringue and cream? Can’t go wrong with that.I ordered the chocolate, coffee, hazelnut and speculos minis. Each one was outstanding! I preferred them cold as possible so it was almost like ice cream. If you are in the area, this is a must try.
Its okay. Had the chocolate croissant and marvielliex thing. The chocolate croissant was ordinary 3/5. The Marv thing was interesting, but not something I would order twice. Id rather eat a macaron or cookie. Its worth trying once though. Maybe Ill order bread next time.Cute place, but its a bit fancier than it needs.
This is happiness in a form of a sweet. It is pure joy in your hands, and in multiple flavors! I don’t say this lightly, but this is one of the tastiest (while managing to keep it somewhat light) sweets I’ve ever had. I look forward to going there whenever I’m in the neighborhood.
Guys, I looooove your bread with raisins and croissants and those little pastries. Everything is so delicious!!! The only think that I didnt like was coffee but it didnt even matter as I walked into your store to get bakery but not coffee. You are the best in baking!!!! My kids love your pastries as well. You are a gem!
So happy that you offer your delicious French pastry in midtown now, much closer to my personal interest. I am going to gain weight, cest sûr !stopped by this shop without knowing that it was a french bakery. With a well-recognizable french accent, the employee gave me a brioche with raisins. All the pastries are a wide of variety of mouth-watering products. Tasting my brioche, I felt like, for a moment, in my country, in France. Thanks a lot for this worthy experience. Thank you JulietteUpdate: I went back to buy some pastries for a New Year Bridal shower, they were all delicious...
I was surprised by what I witnessed the other day at this store. The person in line ahead of me ordered an oat latte, and as they waited outside I witnessed the young man behind the counter pour almond milk into the pitcher and use it for the drink. Kind of alarmed by such careless behavior. As someone with a soy allergy, I will not be going back there again.Response: I did not alert the staff as it was very busy and I didnt want to start a commotion. However, I did flag down the woman who ordered the coffee and notified her of the mistake, it was lucky she doesnt have a nut allergy. This occurred on Sunday around 2-3pm
I dont know exactly how or why people make these but they are amazing little treats! Buy half dozen and plan on eating them ALL in one sitting. They are extremely sweet but very light and airy. I was told that they wont keep overnight so eat them all the same day...Im not sure if this is true or not but we obeyed orders and ate them all the same day:)
I just love this place. The raisin brioche is a little piece of heaven every time I get it. The coffee is good and the staff are friendly, no hipster service here. I just want to thank everyone on the staff for being so great and bringing some baked joy to us during these hard times.
I love bakeries. But I especially love this place. Everything is very very genuine. The place, the people, and the food.... Oh man.First, the people who work there are great people. They love what they do and they care for their customers. There are many delicious items here but I think my favorite one is the brioche. They have a sugar brioche and a chocolate brioche but they are both amazing. They look so pretty and taste even better, melting in your mouth.Dont hesitate to stop by. Do not think twice.Tip: get the brioche in the morning when they are warm, it will change your perspective on life! (they are still good when cold though)
Their brioche is AMAZING! Go for the lager size because you’ll finish the smaller ones in two bites. They have chocolate chip, sugar, and raisin brioche. I usually just order whatever is warm and fresh. Always a good idea to ask when the next batch is coming out, its worth the wait for a hot one!
I’m so fortunate to live near this place. Although not all items are available as in Europe, my senses are full alert mode when they open the door early in the morning with that heavenly smell. Try everything you’ll love them all. Hope this place carries cakes more often.
This bakery is amazing. The brioche bread is now my Achilles heel. They have this other popular dessert in various flavors -. Im not sure what its called but it is melt in your mouth delish! No seating -- just a small pick up place. They serve coffee and have a tiny standing coffee counter.

This is a hidden gem in the Chelsea neighborhood in Downtown Manhattan. The whiff of mouth watering bakery deliciousness is unmistakable as you cross the inviting doors of this establishment. Once you are in you would definitely want to try the dark chocolate infused The Merveilleux and be amazed how effortlessly it melts in your mouth leaving behind an exquisite flavor of fine French bakery. Do yourself a favor and pop by this place when you are back in Chelsea.
I tried only small version of Belgian dark chocolate meringue, my friend - caramel hazelnut one & regular coffee (machine was already shut down by the evening). Cant say we were impressed with meringues, too much cream and too few meringue inside, next time want to try regular one without any cream. My friend liked that coffee. BUT!!! What gives this place 5 is amazing friendly beautiful selling girl, quiet atmosphere with French mood AND THEIR BREAD!!! Girl gave me sample to try & even more when I asked cause this was love from the first sight! It wad just sweet sugary bread, but my God, so soft & fresh & melting, I never ever dreamed bread could be like this! Now Im gonna dedicate several morning to authentic French breakfasts with all sorts of their bread bakery & a cup of coffee from the machine. Love!
Great place to stop in for a coffee and a pastry. The eponymous merveilleux are fantastic - really sweet and fluffy. You can see the whole kitchen from the window, and watch them bake everything fresh every day, which is really cool as a local.Theres no seating at all, so dont plan on eating here.
French pastry place. Great little shop. They have their offerings on display at the window which has a description of the item. Its like window shopping but at pastries instead of clothes. Solid chocolate croissant. Didnt try their other stuff like various brioche breads, but will do so next time.
I cant believe I never reviewed this place! I am here all the time. Their coffee alone is top notch. Their signature, though, is the merveilleux treats. This bakery has the art of the meringue down! They also make excellent cakes made out of crème and meringue with whatever flavoring you choose. Their meringue is on the sweet side as is their chocolate fondant. Very good croissants, not the best in Manhattan, but definitely in the top 10.
I had their regular coffee, raisin bread and chocolate croissant. Everything was excellent. However, theyre basically a bakery. So you cant expect to have a table here. Just a basic seat outside where the dust from passing vehicles gather slowly on you. They dont even have napkins. Remember: its a bakery.
You know when i come to this place the smell is sweet staff is very friendly. There stuff is always fresh. I forget about prices in this place. Chocolate sandwiches are deliciously good. Croissants are perfectly done. There sandwiches are excellently made. The only place in manhattan i cant complain about 1 place. Keep up the good work
Aux Merveilleux de Fred has all the hallmarks of an icon; a small space, with a few choice selections, each one refined into a masterpiece. No mounds of cookies by the pound, or bins of rolls or loaves covering the walls of the store, Freds only offers a literal handful of items, and they are all delightful. The simplest offerings are the probably the brioche. Available in raisin, sugar, and chocolate, these wonderfully airy, chewy breads are great anytime, but my advice it to get here when they open so you can have one still warm from the oven.Still there can only be one star of the show, and here thats the Merveilleux. As you probably guessed already these little meringue cakes are marvelous in English, and delicious in any language. Covered in whipped cream and delicate shavings, they have 6 varieties in a range of flavors including hazelnut, coffee, and cherry, and of course, chocolate. Three sizes are available, from the egg sized minis, up to full sized cakes. Fred has refined these beyond their traditional form, and the ones here are so light and airy they almost vanish in your mouth leaving only a memory of their magic.Being a European establishment they also offer excellent coffee here, latte, espresso, cappuccino, etc. as well as a few creative concoctions of their own. Im partial to the Marvelous coffee, which is espresso, hot milk, whipped cream, crushed meringue, and chocolate flakes. Sure its sweet, but if Im here Im not worried about my blood sugar! This is the kind of place that is legendary for a reason. Go back to your low-carb, sugar free, quinoa and kale lifestyle tomorrow! Go here now and taste the sweet bliss of a Merveilleux!
Yes, you should stop in. Yes, you should get yourself a merveilleux especially if youve never had one before. Its light, airy delicious meringue. The flavors are strong and present. The brioche is pretty good, but the merveilleux is where its at. It is delicious and unlike any kind of dessert youve ever had before.
Wonderful! While visiting from Australia in March I went to Aux Merveilleux 3 times. I highly recommend sitting on the little bench out the front, eating some little treats and watching the world go by. The locals were so friendly and very proud of their little local patisserie.
It really pains me to type this review. I was visiting NYC at the end of October, and stopped into the shop. I came for the cramique—the chocolate brioche—which I discovered in Lyon in 2018. That was a life-changing experience. Perhaps I should have known better not to pick the last brioche available in the window this time. The pastry was very sad—thick, dense, dry, and devoid of all warmth. Little resemblance to the warm, pillowy, instantly melt-in-your-mouth treat from the heavens I had previously enjoyed. It probably shouldn’t have been sold for immediate consumption. That being said, the service was very nice. AMdF is still worth giving a try!! And so is the cramique. Just make sure it hasn’t been sitting out for too long.
I really like this place but the last time I was there, the croissant I got was pretty much burnt. I should have checked while I was there I guess but I left it for the next morning. I woke up, made some tea, took the butter out of fridge so that it’s not too hard, took the croissant out of the cabinet - all pretty excited for my lazy breakfast on my day off work - and it’s burnt! Such a bummer.
Ive been to the London location so when I found out they were opening one in NYC, I was excited. The one here is smaller than London. They have the same meringues and theyre just as good as I remembered it. My favorite flavors are the praline and coffee. I usually just get a small one since the large is too big for me to eat by myself. The staff is nice and friendly. I just wish they had small tables to sit and eat it.
Ganache-filled brioche = 5 stars. The meringue tasted of fridge, but I think that isnt normal. Only quibble: I dont speak french and, ignorant as I am, never know how to pronounce the name of this shop when I recommend it to friends. Perhaps shorten to Freds for non Francophones?
I usually dont like meringues, because theyre basically crunchy, overly sweet puffs of air, but the merveilleux here are an exception. The Belgian chocolate one tastes reminiscent of oreos, if oreos were made of good chocolate and fluffy. Sure, meringues and whipped cream may seem a little too basic to pay for, but not in the form of these pastries.
Would you like to live in Paris, but not the real Paris, instead a Dream Paris, the Paris you imagine when you read books about it or watch Amelie or meet a well-dressed French person who is clearly better than you or see a cute illustration of the Eiffel Tower on a child’s lunchbox—a Paris that never was and never can be?At this shop you can eat a cloud of merengue that’s almost unbearably beautiful and light, just a wisp of something wonderful that afterwards you can’t be sure if you tasted it or imagined it. Which is just what Paris feels like.
A must visit in the West Village. I don’t even know how to describe the sublime nature of the merveilleux, especially the ones found in this shop. If you have even the smallest interest in pastry, confections or just good food - you owe it to yourself to check out this very special place.

2022-06-08I had a quick visit to Aux Merveilleux de Fred and had their signature meringue and cream ball in coffee flavor. It was my first time trying it and the texture took my by surprise because it is very light and airy inside, so its not as heavy as I thought, overall its an interesting sweet pastry worth trying. The chocolate chips brioche was nice too.

2021-12-05Recommended by my son and well I had to try them out. So croissants on a Sunny Sunday morning. Chocolate was the first to be tried. Wonderful taste. Cooked to perfection. Then a single espresso. The plain one had to be eaten too. Freshly hot (had to wait 5’) but worth the wait because it has a very nice touch to its taste. Another espresso and we are done. Now it’s the turn of the rest of the family to enjoy them while the sip their lattes.

2022-03-09I bought plain brioche, pain au chocolat and two meringue pastries. All pastries are good taste that they are not too much sugar. There are no seating inside and outdoor, we can only take it out.☆I visited this bakery in March 2022.

2022-01-20This is a cute little place with great desserts if you love meringue. The Merveilleux cake is their best product. Attached photo is for Meringue cake. (I finished the Merveilleux before I could get to taking a picture) Reasonably priced and worth a try as this is their flagship store in NYC. There are no indoor seatings, so a bit inconvenient in the winter. Overall, worth trying at least once.

2022-02-07Recognized the name after vacationing in France. Stopped in as I was craving a delicious croissant and I was not disappointed! Plus tried one of their signature Merveilleux (different flavors) and it was perfectly sweet.

Croissant is super buttery. Merveilleux is very very light and tasty. Brioche was consumed in the next day and smell and taste good even after one day.

2021-08-19Wow great bakery specialising in Marveilleux. They are soft, sweet and delicious! Would recommend getting a box of six so that you can try the different flavours - they are all really good. Only 2 customers were allowed in at a time but we had a look through the window while waiting!
