Was my first time trying Aveda school but I had a fantastic experience and gorgeous haircut here! The ambiance is absolutely delightful, the students and supervisors are kind, thoughtful, exactingly meticulous and very attuned to my desires. Thank you for making haircuts joyful again!
Do not recommend getting hair cut here unless you are okay with it potentially getting destroyed. Even the “teacher” supposedly “mentoring” the student had no idea what they are doing. Thank god the center manager was there and fixed the mess they were creating with my hair. Students should not be cutting hair on living humans before being fully prepared, educators should be properly educated themselves (and have some awareness of good style).
I went to Aveda for a haircut. My hairdresser, Solange, was very nice and skilled. Having read the previous reviews I had low expectations, but she did really great job. Moreover, the atmosphere of the place is so friendly, that apart from getting a haircut I got really relaxed! Overall, very good experience, if one has enough of time (it took 2 hours)
The Institute is much different now than in the past and the quality of service and knowledge has gone way down. Ive gone to the Aveda Institute in NYC periodically over the years and have always been very happy with the experience and results. But yesterday, the entire experience and results were awful.I went in for a double process and hair cut. The level II stylist wrote down no plan before calling over the instructor who had to tell her exactly what to do, but the entire time the two kept arguing. The student was writing down the color #s incorrectly. Then, the instructor cut my hair while the student mixed the color. I had to keep the shape of my current style: but where the hair was on an angle, the instructor cut it straight and blunt. The sides were literally uneven. The student stylist then applied the color. It was clear she had no idea what she was doing. But anytime the instructor came they would argue and boast about how each was better than the other. I ended up with a band of dark color with a few highlights on the crown. My scalp, forehead and a spot on my neck are stained. The stylist applied so much product at the end, against my objection, that I left with greasy hair. Anytime I asked a question, the stylist replied with attitude that she knew what she was doing. After applying the color, she walked away to clean her bowls, then came back and sat in the chair next to me checking Facebook. When I asked how long the color would be in, she snapped, Are you in a rush? The experience and the results are awful. The worst part is I paid extra for a Level II student: this stylist is within weeks of graduating. It seems Aveda will allow anyone to graduate if they pay the tuition.
So unfortunate that I need to write a review but I thought it was necessary.I called to make an apt on a Wednesday for that Friday at 3:45pm. On the day of my apt, I called around 2/2:30pm to confirm the time and it was still confirmed at 3:45pm. I showed up at 3:42pm for my apt and the woman who checked me in said, Im sorry, we cant take you today. Bad group pf students and they left for lunch and never returned. I dont have enough people to fulfill these last 3 appts. This happens all the time. The weather is really nice out, thats probably why they didnt come back. I didnt call you to cancel because by that time, it was too late to contact you. They couldnt be less interested in tell me.I LOVE Aveda. I LOVE the products. I really didnt like this experience. She mentioned that If I wanted to reschedule, she would give me a discount. I was leaving for the weekend so I couldnt wait and ended up going as a walk-in to a salon near my house that was great.I would love to try this place again but I definitely wont move my meetings around again at work to make an appt there.
I had a great experience getting my hair colored today. Two level 3 students gave me exactly what I wanted - they were very good at listening to my desired outcome while still being able to make suggestions. Both were very attentive, fun, and pleasant to be around. Im sad theyll be graduated from the program by the next time I go. As long as you dont have anything too complicated in mind when you go in, I think the students do a great job.
I went in for a double process coloring to an ash silver and the end result came out yellow. I brought it to the attention of my colorist and TWO different floor supervisors and they suggested trying a blue malva conditioner which made little difference. They did not take responsibility for this mistake and suggested I come back in a few weeks to try again. Why would I come back if you cant get it remotely close the first time? To make matters worse the stylist did not know how to cut mens hair and took over an hour to trim it. The floor supervisor had to teach her how to cut hair. The appointment ended up being almost 5 hours long.
Ruined my hair. i got my hair cut here a month and a half ago and i have been wearing it up every day since and still have to wear it up because the girl did SUCH a terrible job. I understand theyre students, but I got the higher level cut and she cut my curly hair into a long layer and a very short layer and you can see the defined layers when its down. Ive never gone to beauty school, but even I would know how to avoid doing such an atrocious job as this girl did. NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER come here.
I came here for a haircut and had a good experience, very happy with the result. The student did great and the teacher was nicely involved to make sure everything was okay.I recommend calling if you want to make an appointment, their online reservation system is not accurate and they do not get back to you if you request a time that’s not available.
This school is ridiculous , the communication is very POOR and this school is very unorganized. I came in September 27th at the NYC location to schedule a tour to get there and they tell me they are not doing in person tours which I wasn’t not informed when I spoken to them over the phone and Krystal Lewis gave me one anyways . She took my documents that same day . And when I spoke to her again twice she act like she did not receive them it’s annoying I have to keep reaching out and emailing people and I suppose to start in February it’s devastating because I was really looking forward to attending this school and know one sends me any emails updates I have to keep texting and emailing just to get a response
Ive come to the Aveda Institute many times over the past 2 years (for haircut and eyebrow wax) and really love the service there. The only cons that I can give: (1) it is NOT fast. Students often have to have their supervisor check over things, you can sometimes wait a bit for your appt to start, etc. So be prepared to be there a while. (2) Aveda items are heavily pushed on you. When you get a haircut, the technician actually accompanies you to the cashier with a basket of the haircare items used during your visit. Can be a bit awkward!Minus those 2 negatives, you really cant beat the experience you have for the amount of money you pay. Eyebrow waxes are $10 and haircuts vary based on level of the technician. Staff has almost always been incredibly friendly and helpful. They use all Aveda products, offer tea/water, and with a haircut you get a head or hand massage. Also, its clean and kept up well--much better than the Asanda Aveda Spa where youll spend double the price.
This would have been a 4star experience b/c thankfully my hair came out lovely but I found my concerns/requests werent met BOTH by the student & shockingly by the teacher; very poor listeners & bad discernment skills.I mentioned at the onset I have a specific diagnosed scalp issue, the student reworded this as just an itchy scalp to the teacher who then DIDNT even suggest an itch relief shampoo! I also have very visible hairline damage which OBVIOUSLY requires gentleness...yet the teacher began blow-drying it almost synging whats left of my hairline off & said oh I thought you wanted it straight. Wow! so no common sense to a) use discernment and not burn an already damaged area or b) just ask me my preference? Unreal. Lastly I requested my trim be sharp, meaning blunt, didnt get that.. it was more of a cleaning up my ends. She didnt do my perimeter & didnt trim up in the air to get the insides so to speak. Im hoping this review can help better train on these key areas which makes a successful stylist.
I had too many expectations for just a shampoo and blow dry from Aveda, i suppose. I normally go to an asian hair salon in Brooklyn on ave U called U Spot Nail & Hair Salon and for $16 (not including tip) I got a great wash, neck massage, scalp massage, blow dry, and straightened with an iron. So when I saw Avedas ad i thought they could easily top the other place. BUT was I wrong! I arrived 5 mins prior to my appt and waited about 2 mins which wasnt bad. When my stylist student came to me she was polite but she had my wrong appt details. Then after they were fixed immediately, she took me to get my hair shampooed. Student stylist was making up her hours and she had already completed the 7 month course so i thought i was in luck but her shampoo skills were not impressive. She barely shampooed the back part of my head! then when it came to blow dry instead of using a round brush which ALL salons use to get a good blow dry & avoid frizz she used a flat brush which caused frizz. front part of my hair wasnt correctly blow dryed. at the end my hair was still partially wet, scalp didnt feel clean at all and during blow drying there was too much hair pull. This was $15 + tax. After this experience Aveda you lost another client.
Do not enroll into this school. Extremely unorganized, none of the teachers were ever on the same page within the 4 and a half months I attended. they scam you into buying an ipad by saying it is necessary when i barely used the thing. After the first two months they basically push you aside for the new class and make you take customers everyday for their own gain. Nicki is the least helpful one. Went on vacation the week that most of my class graduated and needed to make exit interviews. Now she has a new job and half of my class cant even get their temporary license because no one it certified to sign them up. These girls are unable to work until the school resolves this but now they cant even get in contact with anyone there. Not even corporate can get them in contact. Not worth the $10,000.
I visited for three times, 2 times of color process and 1 times for facial treatment. The experiences are really based on the students. FIrst two visits were very satisfying and plesant, but for the third time it was painful to me (due to the way she tried to comb my hair when applying the dye, she pulled my hair and poked the comb on my scalp so hard) and she tried so hard to recommend the products to me after the service.
Students beware.School is a SCAM!!! DO NOT APPLY!!! SAVE YOURSELF THE MONEY AND GO TO ANOTHER SCHOOL.No consistency in teaching, instructors are uneducated, Instructors are tardy and disappear for hours on end leaving students unattended. School is short staffed and half the facility is not operational. Shampoo bowls are constantly backed up and clogged making it impossible to provide services on clients. You get written up for wearing any spec of white, no organization skills, instructors contradict themselves and no one takes responsibility. Its been 4 months into the program and students have not received any student IDs, the supply kit is very limited and you do not get the value you paid which is $2000.The textbook does not match up with the course book and the exams are based off an old textbook that is not being currently used. Students are not provided with their own lockers but rather 1 key that remains with the instructor at all times making it easily accessible to anyone holding the keys to access your stuff. Items do go missing and do not allow camera replay.Personnel is constantly evading their own actions and their word holds no merit. They constantly lie, deceive and do not uphold the terms of the student contract. They discriminate between students, and force students to push Aveda products on clientele. The education at this Institute is way below standard. Aveda institute is not what it used to be. AINY recruiters use the institute’s legacy to falsely advertise this school to potential new students. However, AINY fails to deliver on what they advertise. It is a shame that they scam so many students into signing the contract, waste that money and the students’ time and the best they can do is tell their students to “make the most of their time here.”Please take care of yourself. If you want to become a cosmetologist and enjoy learning your trade, take your desire, time and money somewhere else. I warned you.
I think people tend to forget this is a school!! You are paying almost nothing to get your hair done and if you dont like the way the students do your hair go pay full price at a salon. This type of stuff upsets me because we are students and you signed a waver for us to touch your hair that is nobodys fault but yours! You chose to be a guinea pig for cosmetology students. Dont have high expectations going into a school because we are training and we are not perfect.
I wish I could give this place 0 stars. It was the worst haircut experience I have ever had. I wish I could remember the name of the girl who cut my hair; I told her exactly what I wanted, but she pulled up a picture on pinterest without asking if I liked it. While washing my hair she splashed water all over my face, I realized her teeth were decaying in front, when she cut my bangs she failed to trim one side of them so they were completely uneven. I told her I wanted a trim and some layers, she trimmed my hair and spent the rest of the time nearly pulling my hair out with her brushing. She kept saying she couldnt wait to go home, and most of the time she would just stand around waiting for her supervisor to come around and do the cut, who was nowhere to be seen. NEVER GO HERE! BEWARE!
The treatment was reasonable, but I detest the automatic upsell behavior. I thought that I was recommended a higher priced face treatment because of my age, but they also upsold my grandsons treatment package to the same more expensive product. Obviously there are many years between my grandson and myself. If the treatment products offered on the specials are basically not up to par, why are they used in the first place? I may or may not return, but will refuse any up priced treatment before the SELL or when the appointment is made.
On 2/5/19 I filled out a form inquiring about information for the esthetician program. On 2/6/19 I recieved an automated email from Jenna Frankel (admissions manager) asking for my availability to meet and my possible start date. I replied with 3 availability dates for the following week and informed her that I would like to start 3/12. Jenna replied back stating March classes are full and gave me the option to join the March waitlist or sign up for May classes which has 2 seats left. I replied back with interest in beginning in May along with my availability for the following week to meet. Jenna Frankel did not reply to my email. I went back on the website and filled out another inquiry form, as I was adamant in following through with the process. I did not recieve a response. I called the Aveda Institute on 2/8/19 and left a message for Lynn (student service manager) inquiring about the enrollment process. Surprise, surprise no call back from her either. On 2/11/19 @11am I called the school again, spoke with the operator and asked that someone call me back about May enrollment. At 11:24am I recieved an email from Jenna Frankel stating the May program is filled. If I could I would give Aveda Institute 0 stars. You are a reflection of the company you work for. My perception of this school is highly unprofessional. To inform an applicant that seats are available for a program, then ignore the applicants interest is hurtful and belittling. I will not let this horrible experience deter me from accomplishing my goals. Due to Avedas lack of professionalism I will take my money and invest in a school that actually cares.
While I only visited the location for supplies I liked the store. I would truly come back for salon service if I had more time & was not just passing thru town on a short visit.Prices are what I expect and the quality of the products cant be beat. Took me a bit to find the place because it is off the beaten path from the rest of the haute places in SOHO, but nice store/salon.
I am glad you wrote about the appointments . I had a appointment today and made a trip to the city which takes 1 hour. I usually confirm and i did not when i got to nyc i sent a text to the person to confirm and i get sorry I have to cancel. I wish she would have just took one minute to text me I have to cancel. Disappointed
Such a bad experience here, I went to model for a student, her name is Sky La, and the instructors let her practice on me when she didn’t feel comfortable to cut my hair, she called few times the instructors to show she had issues - one came but too late - they tried to fix it but it was too late - they weren’t supervising enough at all- she ruined my hair this girl- didn’t apologize- and the only thing the instructor said seeing me , is “ I’m sorry” I regret I genuinely trusted Aveda salon, I thought they would be respectful with my hair .If this is how they learn at school, I would never trust another aveda hair dresser again.
Great deal, awesome service and productsI’ve always liked Aveda products and after rotating through a variety of salons I figured I’d give this a try. I was booked at 9:30 for highlights and a cut, followed by a 60 minute facial. At 9:30 there were a few of us waiting, we all got a brief intro from an instructor to remember that this was a school and not a salon and things might take a little longer and then one by one the students came and got us. My student was Hector, a wonderful young gentleman who did an amazing job. He went above and beyond! Two instructors kept checking in. Hector explained what he was recommending, added a few extra foils for added depth, and did a stellar job. Probably the most precise bob I had in years. The instructor made sure there was no stray hair! These students get a quality education. We ran a bit late but the facial luckily could be pushed back an hour. On the services list they only offer one type of facial and what I got was quite different but very enjoyable, a lot of oil was used in the beginning, no brushes though. There was a skin analysis and the instructor came. Both of them together made recommendations and I was asked if I wished some $20 upgrade. Sure why not-prices are so low to start with….I’ll be back for sure. The music in the facial area was some sort of jazz that would be more appropriate in a brunch type restaurant. That would be my only complaint. Lol not very relaxing. Other then that. Amazing!!!

2022-08-14I had a really relaxing, great facial here followed by hair service. I had probably the best cut I have had in a long time (if ever). I’m not really picky about my hair, but I have long wavy/curly hair and professional stylists will still not do a great job cutting it. Hector did an amazing job cutting my hair as well as applying a gloss that left my hair looking super shiny and healthy. He also did a great job styling it. Most of the time when I go to salons for a haircut they try to round brush my curly/wavy hair and it just ends up frizzy and poofy and not looking great… he did a MUCH better job and my hair looked awesome when I walked out. Hector is great!

2022-05-01The instructors need to deliver an Aveda quality education to their students and stress the importance of communication with the client. My student repeatedly had to search for an instructor and the instructor directed them to give me a different variation of service then what I specifically asked for, though I didn’t notice until my hair was full of foils. This was entirely avoidable with communication and better instruction. The student did excellent work, only one identifiable error and had wonderful chair-side manner. If they had explained and involved me in the conversation with the student we would have been on the same page. I like being a part of a stylist learning their skill, the experiences they offer here could be great with better investment from the instructors. The students are certainly bringing their best energy, the environment reflects that and it’s an enjoyable place to spend a few hours.

2022-07-09I love the services Aveda provides, and I love supporting students. Just please note appointments don’t start until 9:30 despite being able to successfully make an appointment for 9AM like I did. This meant I did not have enough time for the appointment as I would have if it started at 9, leaving me to reschedule and rob the student of valuable learning time and leaving me in a bit of a crunch. Nobody’s fault, just an FYI for anyone requesting an appointment. I wish they would update their website or email confirmations to make this clear.

2022-05-07I just had a great experience and had a shampoo, fresh cut and style at the Aveda Institute. I was going there knowing it would take time and was open to what it would be.My Aveda stylist in training took care and was very kind. I got a great cut and style on a rainy day and she made sure to put enough products to tame the frizzy on my curly hair.

2022-03-01Used to love this place. Got a super uneven cut, like I have chunks of hair that are inches below the cut line. Neither the instructor, student or the salon will fix this even though there is a satisfaction guarantee.Avoid this place, since you will just have to pay for a new haircut all over again.

2022-03-28I am no longer local to NYC, and had one full day in the city. I walked into Aveda and made a same day appointment (yay!) for a full head of highlights for that evening. I arrived 5 minutes before my appointment time and was told that a full head of highlights was not possible given the constraints of the system, despite a conversation I had with an educator and front desk staff that morning. This was incredibly disappointing, as I certainly wanted the service. What is most inconsiderate is receiving this news at 620p (I waited 25 minutes while staff discussed the issue) and being unable to find an alternative before leaving town tomorrow. This lack of communication is incredibly unprofessional and discourteous.

2022-02-03Just wanted to drop by and praise Amelia for the excellent costumer service experience she provided me with today. She was very understanding, knowledgeable, energetic and friendly. I suffer from anxiety and truly find it hard to talk on the phone, specially with strangers but Amelia made me feel so at ease and comfortable. She definitely left a great first impression of Aveda Institute New York!

2022-03-08Although I can’t speak on the services at this Aveda location. I’ve been shopping at different locations and used their products for years. I came in knowing what I wanted, but usually the staff is warm and friendly. Will sometimes talk about new products. Can’t say I had the same experience here.

2021-05-26I am so grateful that I found Aveda Institute. I was nervous at first but from the moment I walked in I was welcomed. I was looked after by V. My experience was as awesome as just hanging out with a friend ( who knows how to do hair ). The instructor was very helpful whenever a question arose about how to proceed with the hair cut. I am so happy I went. Thank you to V, her instructor and the gentleman at the register for being awesome.

2021-10-30Set up an appointment for today, and asked how long this normally takes (understanding it’s an institute). Lady on the phone said typically 1-2 hours. I walked in today at 1pm and they told me I could be there for “a while.” When I asked how long, she said “maybe until close” which is 5pm….. the lady at the institute was extremely rude and offered no explanation for the mixed messages. Do NOT recommend unless you’re trying to spend your entire day here.
