Azteca Mexican Grill in other cities:
Three years ago I gave this restaurant 5 stars but down graded it now primarily because of their menu, no more diner combinations, everything is alacarte. The food was OK and left me stuffed but compared to other Mexican restaurants now in CNY Azteca has fallen behind. They have also had a number of careless health violations that are said to have been corrected but honestly they were unforced errors.Maybe the simple menu is for bottom line but with competition out there about the only reason to return is for the Thursday night Margarita specials. My meal as shown with one Margarita was over $17 plus tip... Service from the waitress was good.
This is one of the best restaurants in town! The margaritas are always fantastic and the food is beautiful and delicious! The staff are knowledgeable and friendly and the food arrives quickly! I recommend the Burrito King! Itll feed you twice and the french fries inside have a lovely crunch!
We dont go to Oswego too often but when we do we eat here. This was here before the one in Camillus. Food and service is good. Two thumbs up for the waitress! When ordering drinks I ordered a Corona then changed my mind and ordered a Dos Equis. She brought me a Corona. I didnt say anything because it wasnt a big deal and I did change my order on her. When completing the check she realized she made a mistake, came over and apologized for giving me the wrong beer. Love it when people own up. Extra tip money 🤑 for her!
I ordered the Enchiladas Trio and some Flan. Although the atmosphere was nice and the staff were all very friendly, the food was pretty underwhelming and the portion sizes were a bit small for the price. To be fair, I went on a Wednesday at 6 pm, so maybe they just weren’t on their “A” game.I plan on going back because I saw how much they do for others and for the community. I love when companies like Azteca are concerned about people. That conclusion is based on how they treat customers and what they have in their restaurant.
Went for lunch and had a trio of burritos: chicken, beef, and cheese. We got great service and it was the middle of the afternoon, so not very busy. I have to say that I dont think Ive ever had Tex-Mex food that was as emasculated and bland as I had here! It was edible yes, but nothing to get remotely excited about. Where were the spices!? The cilantro?! Ahhh Oswego we love you ❤️😆
I’ll start off by saying, I’ve heard such great things about this place, and I really wanted to like it. But after two visits, I’m left feeling pretty disappointed and underwhelmed. My most recent visit was a dine in on a Monday during lunch hours at the Oswego location. We ordered a burrito, some fajitas with rice, and an order of chips and queso with added ground beef. They start with chips and salsa for the table, which is a nice touch. The salsa was good enough, but the tortilla chips tasted...burned? I couldn’t really put my finger on it. They were edible, but I wouldn’t look forward to eating them again. Which was par for the course for the entire experience. Now back to that burrito. It was a complete disappointment. It showed up as promised and arrived quickly (maybe too quickly...) The very FIRST thing I noticed was that the plate was PIPING hot when I grabbed it, to the point that I jumped back in surprise. ALL the plates were this hot (thanks for the warning waitress.) The second thing I noticed was the very first bite was a bland, almost tasteless blend of ingredients. The ground beef was completely unseasoned and dry. I cannot state enough how dry and unseasoned the beef was. Completely unappealing. At first I questioned myself, maybe this is what authentic Mexican food is SUPPOSED to taste like? Maybe I’m the problem? But my second, and third bites were hard to get down. I only ate half the burrito. Onto the nachos...no different. The chips were the same burned tasting chips from before, and the same lifeless, unseasoned, and dry ground beef was piled on top. Again, a complete disappointment. I struggled to go back for more hoping it would get better, it never did. The fajitas were the same story, with the rice being dry and more of the same. I kept commenting on the ground beef, and wondering why it tasted so off. Then came the comment of the day...”you’re right, it tasted...microwaved?” And that was it. The quickly arriving food, showing up on piping hot plates, tasting dry and bland. The dry rice. Our entire meal was microwaved. No question about it. Now as I said, I REALLY want to give them the benefit of the doubt. It was a Monday, and there is a pandemic going on. I could think of excuses all day. But the place was decently busy, and I’ve been to plenty of restaurants that have still provided great food right now. To me, this was completely unacceptable. Almost $40 for dry, bland, microwaved food. I would have GLADLY waited longer for fresh, purpose prepared food. The food earned 0 stars. The two stars I did give were for the service. The employees were nice enough and the waitress was fine. As I said, I understand these are tough times, and I know a lot of people love this place. Just look at all the great reviews, all of these people can’t be wrong? But providing great food SOME of the time isn’t good enough. Other restaurants are still providing great food, and great food is not what we received. It’s unfortunate, but I didn’t make the choice to throw 3 plates in a microwave and charge $40 for it. Won’t be back.
So much food and so so goodFirst time I have ever been served enchiladas in flour tortillas. The cheese enchilada had less cheese than a ham and cheese lunchables kids snack. Service was average. The staff was more interested in cleaning up than waiting on the customers. I might give them another chance but I am not sure.
Most disgusting thing I’ve eaten this year. The meat was NOT meat, it had the worst taste I’ve ever tasted, tasted like it was sitting for a week. The lettuce, cheese, and sour cream was SO mushy and was for my partner too. The tortilla was mushy, the soft taco was soggy. Mozzarella sticks were burnt, cheese wasn’t melted. Only thing that was good were the fries, so.... I’ve NEVER left a food review so, this is serious
Only one star because I could not give them zero. First time customer, mask requirement not explained. I was literally kicked out of the building, even though medical exemption. I asked how to get my food, they said go outside. After about 5 minutes someone brought my food. Really hated to give them credit card. No option to pay when I ordered or for cubside pickup. The food I ordered was awful and no toppings on the tacos. Guacamole was old tasting and already had brown spots 5 minutes later. Never had a red tomatilla sauce as tomatillas are green. Husband said food was awesome 4 years ago. Guess times change.
Fast friendly service on my visit. The salsa was fresh and made in house as were the chips. Very mild salsa but tasty with lots of cilantro. I had the enchilada trio to get a decent sample of the food they offer during a single visit. The beef with rojo sauce was good. The chicken with verde sauce and the cheese in white sauces were terrific! Ill be back if ever in the area again.
First time weve been back to Azteca since it originally opened. We were very disappointed back then. Lately we had heard many good things about this place so we tried again and we were very happy that we did. Excellent service, excellent food and excellent margaritas. We will be back for sure.
8 to 10 years ago this was my favorite place to go in Oswego and it has gone downhill dramatically since then. You used to receive an overflowing basket or two for the table of chips with salsa which would be refilled for free and now you receive a basket with a handful of chips thrown in it and salsa and are charged for more and those little things make a difference. And the sauces that are on some of the main dishes used to be delicious and thick and are now watered-down and displaced on the plate and just plain doesnt look appetizing like it used to. Serving sizes have gone down slightly, but prices up... our waitress was amazing though putting up with the group I went with who had a fit about the larger than 6 party gratuity add-on. Ive been a server so I understand but this particular restaurant isnt worth paying the prices plus the tip anymore, or more so... you want to pay a larger tip because you feel bad for the waitress that shes working there... I used to get excited about going and the last couple of times I have gone have been lackluster and the very last time nailed the coffin in.I hear that the Aztecas in the Syracuse area has not gone downhill yet... Ill take the extra miles to get there
The food is very good, but if I am being fair, its a bit typical. One can go into the average Mexican food establishment, and order the exact same meals. Albeit good, there doesnt seem to be anything that separates the food from that same average restaurant. However, the staff, for the 11 years I have come here, has always been no lees than great. Even in an evening rush, they seem to be spot on. They are friendly, attentive, and take the extra moment to be personable. That said, my family enjoys Azteca, and will continue to fit it into our options for as long as it remains there.
So happy my brother found this place. Mexican is my favorite, being from Arizona I know what authentic Mexican food should taste like and I also know how hard it is to find on the east coast. This place nailed it , very friendly staff!! Great selections and prices! My new favorite place to go :)
Absolutely the best authentic Mexican food Ive had since I left Arizona 30 years ago. Good prices, good and friendly service as well as prices. Great choices on the menu and again great prices, especially on the lunch menu and lunch specials. Today I ordered the chicken chimichanga with guacamole, sour cream and refried beans. Portions are generous also. Highly recommend this restaurant and will definitely be returning on a regular basis.
I’m visiting here and I wanted to try this place cause I haven’t had “authentic” Mexican food in a while so I ordered takeout from here two orders of enchiladas supreme and tacos for me and my girlfriend we were hungry and it came out to be around $60 so I imagined it would be good I got back to the room and when I saw the food I felt uninterested but I gave it a try the enchiladas had no flavor they were bland the meat was dry super dry like if it was microwaved and was just plain boring then I ordered the al pastor tacos and those were decent but the steak tacos my girlfriend had were dry like jerky and the tortillas were soggy and falling apart idk if they had a bad day or something I hope they get better but I wouldn’t consider this authentic last time I had real authentic Mexican food the food had so much flavor and the tacos were juicy and plus we got sauces to put on all we got here was a sauce that tasted like soy sauce and wasn’t spicy Im very disappointed
The food was delicious and the service was just right! I ate alone and found the atmosphere fun and buzzing. The best part is I wasnt being blast with questions every 5 minuets like what happens in some places. To me it was a 10 out of 5 experience, will be back for more!
The wait was long, but it come to find out this restaurant was closed for a while and the day we arrived was the first day it had reopened. our food was wonderful, the tast, temperature and portions size was just as it should be. The waitstaff was friendly. prices were good. I will definitely go back.
Went to dinner with some of my friends from work and had a margarita. That tested great and it was inexpensive. Meal was ok. A bit on the salty side and I like salt. I have had some nice dinners there before. I suppose since there arent any other Mexican restaurants in the area they have no competition. It was a bit busy which may be why it was ok. Have had much better. I will go back because I love Mexican food.
I do not like to complain. I have been before - years ago - and enjoyed it, but my latest visit left me reluctant to go again. The servers were wonderful, although ours switched mid-way through our meal without any explanation or notice, and I am sure if I had said something to either of them about my issues, they would have attempted to make it right. But the food really left something to be desired.First, if you dont like cilantro, dont go. There was too much in everything. I realize that thats just personal preference, but I dont like it that much. That said, we discovered a hair in our dish of complimentary salsa; the plates were burning hot, but the food was only lukewarm; the lettuce was old & browning, and the tomatoes were definitely not ripe (in July - were not talking December!). And yes, too much cilantro in the guacamole. We ordered dessert anyway, as my daughter did enjoy her dish (although she had expected to be able to pick up & eat her burrito not use a knife & fork), and according to her the Chimi-cheesecake was fabulous. I got the fried ice cream and was very disappointed. The fried bowl definitely tasted on the verge of molding, and everything was covered in cheap chocolate syrup and spray whipped cream, hiding the fact that all I had was a scoop of vanilla ice cream rolled in corn flakes. Definitely not worth the money, even if the bowl had been freshly fried.I have friends who are regulars there, and I am sure others find it a great place (although perhaps thats just the cheap margaritas influencing them), but I probably wont be returning.
Very good local Tex-Mex. The food is tasty, and fresh. The chips and salsa are good, but do yourself a favor and get the salsa Verde.Sample plates are good, but my favorite thing is the carnitas. The fajitas Azteca are very tasty. The place has a good bit of seating, and service has always been friendly and efficient. You can get a good beer, or a margarita too. Sadly, they dont sell margarita pitchers.Look, its not Old Mexico, but it has the Mexican dishes we hate ourselves for loving, and theyre done right.
My absolute favorite place to eat in Oswego! My boyfriend and I go quite frequently. The frozen margaritas are amazing and I have never tried anything I didnt like! The fajitas are my all time favorite. Dont skip out on the queso dip as an appetizer. The servors are always so friendly and helpful! I cant say enough about how great it is!
We have a great meal there everytime. Wait staff is very attentive and friendly. They will explain anything on the menu you may be interested in. The food is wonderful. Save room for desert! The Chimi Cheesecake and the Volcan de Chocolate cake with melba sauce is outstanding! Enjoy!
Azteca is always consistent! They have never gotten my order wrong, given me bad service, or been unsatisfying in any way. They’re food is always so delicious! All of the staff there is very friendly, even when the place is packed and they are probably overwhelmed! Seriously, a great place to go!
OMG, Ill drive miles to come back here. Havent had this good of real Mexican Food since I lived in Florida in the 70s. 1st time I wanted variety so ordered Trio of Enchiladas with seasoned rice, lettuce shreds and addictive guac. So satisfied with dinner plus the fresh chips/salsa served for free, as traditionally should be served. Loved the three different sauces over enchiladas, white, green and traditional red, but the adventure for Taste buds didnt end there. No less than four brand labels of hot sauce was at each table. Too full to order personal dessert so split piece of Carrot cake which came on pin stripped platter with caramel drizzle design over cake and plate and pouf of real whipped cream. Omg, now I know where they used some of the fresh pineapples that are halved and used as bowl to serve fajitas inside of. Getting one of these next time and share a different divine dessert. As for more carrot cake, Im taking it home to hog it for my own. Thank you for your devotion to this delicious cultural cuisine and staying true to your Matriarchal recipes.
EXCELLENT FOOD! EXCELLENT SERVICE! And, VERY FRIENDLY STAFF! This restaurant knocks it out of the park! I was visiting from out of town and had the appetite for some good Mexican. Azteca Mexican Grill did not disappoint!!! In fact, they raised the bar! I will be back!
Since moving here been looking for traditional and authentic Mexican food, this is not it. if youre looking for Tex-Mex, I guess that would be more along the lines of what this is. my son and I ordered different menu items so that we could taste different items. I had the carnitas street tacos, which came with salsa, cilantro, onions and a side of rice and beans. my son had the chichimangs, which isnt mexican at all. we also ordered one tamale and a plain order of churros, without the syrup and icecream. my street tacos left a lot to be desired. the tortillas were hard, cold and dry. I had to drink plenty of ice tea because they were so dry. the carnitas themselves were dried out, salty and dark brown which indicates the meat was not fresh.not edible by my standards. the rice and beans were piping hot and the rice dried out, indication of being microwaved. the beans and rice had no flavor whatsoever. my sons chichimangs, he said were fine, I took one bite, and if your looking for americanized mexican food that would be it. he liked it, but said its not mexican, but it was good. the tamale masa was hard as a rock, we even had a hard time putting our fork through it. tamale masa should be soft. they put a red sauce on top, which tasted of a canned enchilada sauce, and melted cheese, I dont know why, it didnt mention that on the menu, maybe to try and soften and help with the dryness of the tamale. the churros were greasy and looked old, not fresh. all in all very dissatisfied and disappointed. this is my first time, and will definitely our last. this is NOT traditional mexican food, but if you dont know what real Mexican food is, you may like this place. This is not authentic by any means, but I must say the waiter we had was very pleasant.
May 12, 2015; While sitting and eating a local man thats down on his luck looked through the window, he looked hungry and lonely. i asked him to come in and told him i would pay for his meal. At the end of our meal, which was great, a server leaned over and whispered that they too help him by giving him meals every now and then. My heart swelled with love and admiration from such a beautiful act. Thank you Azteca, I will always be a patron of your establishment because this proves to me its about community and not money.
Used to love eating at Azteca, but lately theyve gotten hit or miss. They recently bumped up the price of everything by ~$1 per item while simultaneously changing their ingredients to lower quality. A lot more food tastes pre-packaged and canned, whereas it used to taste like it was all made in house. The service got a lot slower too. I hope they dont get greedy and ruin it because theyre still the finest Mexican you can get in Oswego, but weve definitely started going a lot less.

2022-06-16We tried Azteca for dinner. After they seated us, it took a while before we were waited on again, until prompted. Chips and salsa were enjoyable, although salsa lacked some flavour. The main course however (vegetarian) was delicious, and decent serving size too. Would recommend!

2022-04-30Ordered here two times for pickup— Al Pastor Tacos and a Burrito California. The tacos were great and definitely worth getting for its price: you get 4 tacos and rice and beans on the side. However, the second time I ordered for pickup, I asked if I could get the Burrito California with Al Pastor (which was not on the menu), but the girl who took my order said that it was doable. When I went to pick up the order, they had put carnitas in the burrito instead. When they asked the girl who had taken my order, she gave me a dirty look and denied responsibility, claiming that I had asked for carnitas instead of al pastor, which I knew for sure that I did NOT.Another lady tried resolving this by offering to remake the burrito, but I did not want to bother and said that it was fine. I would have given a higher rating because this, but afterwards, she handed me a menu and seemed to think that I did not know how to properly order and treated me as though I were a child.Overall, the food was great, but based off of my recent experience, the service leaves something to be desired.
