The food is pretty pricy as they expect each person to order a $39 entree and they are small portions but the food is so delicious and filling. The Vibe is amazing and they have great music and cocktails. From all the Indian restaurants i have tried in NYC! I would definitely go back here again and again! I highly highly recommend
The ambience of the place is great. The food is good, but not great. I was expecting the butter chicken to be more creamier than what I got. The cocktails are average. We did get the biryani and chats which are decent here. The best dish I liked was the Chicken Ghee Roast .
This is one of the best Indian restaurants in NYC. Proportions are not very big but quality, taste and presentation of food is amazing. Absolutely loved their desserts. Mumbai margarita (the one with bubble) is highly recommended. Overall food is a great combination and balance of gourmet and authentic Indian flavors. We went there for our anniversary dinner and they made it special by surprising us with sparklers at the end of our dinner. Our server (Jaswant) was really good.
Beautiful, classy Indian restaurant great for groups! We tried a variety of foods to accommodate all of our needs: vegetarian, pescatarian, allergies. While the food itself was not particularly outstanding, the flavorful sauces more than made up for it. Just make sure you get plenty of naan to soak it all up! The best food we ordered is the Lamb Keema Hyperabadi in small plates, which was like a shepherds pie that you spread on fluffy bread. Again, the lamb mixture itself was a bit underwhelming and oily, but the bread was a dream. Would have loved to just order more bread. The prices were rather high for the amount of food you get, so unless youre meeting here for a special occasion, it might not be worth it. However, the service was extremely understanding and adaptable, which we appreciated.
Amazing cocktails! We went on a Tuesday and the place was super crowded, wasnt the ambience I hoped for but the food was good. We tried the tasting menu, my husband really liked the Goan prawn balchao and I loved the Sea bass paturi. The Kashmiri toddy & the Juhu margarita were pretty amazing - they complemented the food well. The butter chicken was rather disappointing, I feel like famous Indian restaurants should absolutely nail dishes like butter chicken/ chicken tikka masala - especially if they are on the chefs tasting menu. I also expected that the servers would be more involved/ polite - they werent bad but not the best either. Also - music was super loud. I understand music being loud when it turns into a dance floor but it was just a Tuesday night with a lot of crowd. It isnt the best place if youre looking for a romantic anniversary dinner.
Fun spot for weekend brunch! Live music and dancing, highly recommend if you know bollywood songs. Food is pretty good, and service is okay as it gets very busy during brunch. It is on the pricier side as you are required to get a large dish and side during brunch hours.
I want to start off by saying we had a group of 7 and spent $550 in food and drinks. I didnt think the food and drinks were up to par for that price point but the people I came with did. Most Indian restaurants have free papad for the table because its considered a small snacking food, but here you pay over $10 for it because its a gourmet restaurant. The price seems to have been dictated by the flash of the dishes and drinks rather than the quality. My larger issue was that one of our group found a large piece of plastic in their poori, and when we brought it to the attention of the staff their only fix was to comp us a $14 appetizer. Plastic in our food means its definitely not fresh. It wasnt plastic wrap, it was hard. Had the person not realized they could have really hurt themselves. A small overpriced appetizer is not an acceptable response. I doubt Ill be coming back here nor recommending it to friends. There are better Indian restaurants in the city, fusion or otherwise.
Nice Vibe and Great food overall.Couple of Jain food options:- Dahi Puri- Avocado Bhel- Pani Puri (average)- Cheese Roti- Panner MattarThey serve limited portion, visit this place for experience and trying their flavorful food (loved their Dahi Puri, Avocado Bhel & Cheese Roti)Cons:- It’s pricy- Server stands right next to you all the time- wish the server was more polite
Have been there 6 times before this. Today it looked a cheap third class place with people dancing, occupying the floor, no place to walk. Songs were so stupid and cheap, that we actually walked out before even finishing our meals or drinks. No masks, these people were dancing as if it’s their private party. No regards for others. And the restaurant didn’t care at all. Cheap 3rd grade songs, with people lying on the floor. Never ever going back unless you improve your practices. Or have people host private parties for this. It’s so uncomfortable to be through this, people splattering their beers and giving girls with us looks that made everyone uncomfortable! Guys walking around on table, drunk. Never expect this from this place. It has gone from one of my favorite spots to making sure I never come back. Avoid at all costs
Had brunch at Baar Baar during our trip to NYC. Loved the modern ambience. Drinks were great.-For small plates, we ordered Avocado Kejriwal (a take on avocado toast) and chilli cheese naan. Avocado Kejriwal was a great interpretation, though the cilantro chutney was more of a coconut chutney and not what I was expecting. Chilli cheese naan was good but didnt have any sauce accompaniments.-Large plates: ordered paneer kathi rolls which was my favorite of all the things we ordered. Great flavor! It also came with a side of fries. We also ordered Tandoori Cauliflower--the cauliflower was cooked and marinated perfectly however it was served on a base of the usual Tikka sauce which was not necessary or good. Had the Cauliflower been served dry, it would have been a great dishOverall, a good meal! They also had live Bollywood music which was a pleasant surprise--definitely had nostalgia with all the songs
The vibe was very nice, drinks were good. They have a stupid rule that number of main course dishes on the table shouldn’t be less than the people in your party. Hence, you can’t order more appetizers thinking you can share the main course! The star dish was avocado kejriwal. Paneer pinwheel and butter chicken had the same gravy overall, chole kulcha weren’t great either.
Visited this restaurant about 3x now. A little bit on the pricier side, but I knew before going in. We got paneer pin wheels, malai kofta, and carrot cake Halwa. I forgot to take pictures of the drinks, but they were good too. The carrot cake halwa is the best dessert!
We tried their sweet potato chaat, gongura chicken, paneer pinwheel with side of naan and rice.I had kala khatta mocktail, which was meh. It had “some” flavor but it was not kala khatta.Gongura chicken was really good for contemporary Indian restaurant. It was right amount of spicy. I loved sweet potato chaat. A good mix of flavors. Paneer pinwheel was interesting twist we enjoyed that. It’s on sweeter side of the gravy.Service was okay. There are still some rough corners to polish for service.
Outstanding customer service. Delicious food (reasonably priced for NYC). Strong and unique drinks. Beautiful ambiance. I highly recommend this restaurant. My coworkers introduced me to this restaurant. Im not even an Indian food lover, but I loved this place so much that I came back again the same week with a different friend group.Con: I would have given 5 stars, however, they do not give out free dessert for birthday celebrations. I found this out the hard way sadly.
Indoors has really lively ambiance. It’s packed to the brim and over spilling with people almost so make sure you’re comfortable (on a Friday night). Lots of creative cocktails with an Asian twist. We had lots of items, some of my favorites were the Dahl and the spinach curry. They had a decent number of veggie options and it was a good overall. We sat in the outdoor space which was not that nice ambiance wise and the door kept opening and closing making for a hot and cold experience.Sustainability rating: 3 out of 5. Reusable serving ware was used. Not sure if they compost.
I had very high expectations from the rave reviews online, food bloggers and friends local to NYC.Baar Baar lived up to the bar - Bengali Chicken and Chicken Butter Masala with the Jalapeno Naan; topped with the cocktails - really delicious... Do Not Miss this spot if you are in the area! Our server suggested the mango rasmalai tart and we are soooo glad we ordered it.The staff is great and service is quick. The bubble on my cocktail burst before I took a good picture...and the server prompt came back and put it back on without even me having to ask.
Food here is amazing, but a few reasons for the missing star. Live music is fun but WAY too loud - can’t talk or hear anyone. Even at tables in the back, away from the performers, they turn it UP. Menu is expensive for how small the portions are. 90 minute brunch seating is strict, we got kicked out quickly lol
Reasonable place for Indian food but I’m not sure the claim of best Indian food in nyc is accurate. Got the dahi Puri and crispy cauliflower for appetizers. The dahi puri was interesting, had some of the usual spices but the dahi was “laid” on top - am assuming they some nitrogen technique to make it that way - pretty cool. The cauliflower was average - I am assuming it is a take on Gobi Manchurian with a gourmet twist - it went down well but nothing unique. For entrée, we got the paneer spin wheel - unfortunately this didn’t do anything for me. The paneer wheels were too dense and sauce was average. Next time I go will dry the chicken or lamb dishes and see how they are. Go there for an evening of fun (without the expectation of NYs finest Indian food)
Baar BaarWe were super impressed with our restaurant week experience in this restaurant; if you are reading this and haven’t booked with them yet, then you are missing something good. This Indian gastropub is huge inside with a tastefully designed bar and with additional outdoor dining it looked even bigger. It was hot and we decided to be seated outside and being very busy inside and still being in a pandemic we felt safer that way. QR codes replace menus. A waiter came to our table with 2 pieces of Dahipuri; a round, hard, puffy puri filled with different sauces. Oh, boy the explosion of flavors ensued as soon as we bit into it. Plus 1 star for that!We then ordered tandoor smoked pork belly which melts in the mouth, and their Indian take on tostada; tuna bhel tostada is equally delicious and went well with our California Chardonnay. For our large plate we shared Baar Baar butter chicken; so simple looking yet the flavor is so exquisite and beef short rib curry served with garlic naan and basmati rice. Both dishes are just so delicious and the portion is small but still good for sharing. We capped the night with chocolate rum ball and mango and chili sorbet(which had a pleasant spicy kick to it)Fair to say overall we were quite blown away.
The restaurant staff was very accommodating and friendly and made it a great dining experience. Not a typical Indian restaurant as the menu options are unique and they have given every plate a new spin . We ordered baked chicken malai tikka, paneer chili, gangura chicken curry, paneer pinwheel makhini and Kairi mule cocktail. Must try.
We got a recommendation to visit Baar Baar as it reminds on our favourite Indian back home in London (namely Dishoom). This place is amazing! The atmosphere, the service, the food, the drinks. They nailed it.We had Suhel as a waiter and he was absolutely fantastic. He offered us some wine which would go with our food (Syrah, french 2018 - very much worth the money)For starters we had the spicy Margarita, and let me tell you, this was the best margarita we had so far! The notes of the drink, the spicy kick that comes after - just wow!For starter plates we took the prawns and the chili paneer. Both dishes were a dream! (As a Palestinian, the paneer roll was just a recreation of our desert Knafeh but as a spicy savory version!).The prawns were creamy in a rich tomato sauce served with Brioche to die for!For main we had the butter chicken and the sea bass whole fish. The fish was something else, out of this world! So yummy and light. The butter chicken was smooth, creamy and had just the right kick. Full of flavour and delicious to eat with the garlic naan.As.we were celebrating my husbands birthday we ordered the mango pavlova for dessert - now of you love pavlova this is a whole new level of how a pavlova should be! With an amazing mango ginger compote and roasted coconut ice cream. We absolutely recommend Baar Baar and we will be going there again during our stay in NYC.For Suhel, thank you for being such an amazing host, the service was exceptional. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
This review comes from someone who never liked Indian food. This place is legit and sold me on Indian food. Every dish is richly full of flavor and the service was flawless. Andy knows how to recommend dishes and I legit think he loves the food more than us haha. We went for restaurant week and immediately said wed be back even when their insanely delicious food and cocktails arent on sale. You wont be disappointed. The curries, Naan bread, cocktails and mock tails dont disappoint. The atmosphere is great and I cant wait to return!
Elevated Indian Food! And elevated so well! Modern take and amazing presentation whilst preserving the traditional flavours. The meat was soooo tender. My favourite was the tuna tartare (apologies, i forgotten the real name of the dish). It was definitely a first tuna tartare with Indian flacour and I am obsessed! And let not forget the phenomenal ambiance and great service! Must try!
We enjoyed everything, the place, the atmosphere and also the food. The small plates were better than the large ones. The options were not that innovative really and the portions were just fine. Cocktails were OK but I one thrilled besides the smoke bubbles that were a fun touch. Also the brownie was fine but for the price... Nothing special. No reason in the big NYC to go back really. Over $100 per person and we ordered dessert because 2 of us were hungry. Hope it helps.
The five stars is for the great service. It was our first time there and we were treated like family by the server and the owner. Came here with my boyfriend who is vegan and they had a lot of great and tasty options for him and helped steer us towards flavors we love and flavors unknown. The food is very good and didn’t feel as heavy as other Indian food sometimes can. Also, the dessert was to die.
Do not leave this place without trying out the Butter Chicken. One of the best I’ve had in the US, hands down. They also do very interesting takes on some really traditional flavours which is really interesting.Do try out their Indian take on some classic cocktails. You might have to keep an open mind with that though!
Hmm, finally after a long wait my turn came to visit this place, Baar Baar. Heard a lot about this beforehand. So here’s my experience. Ambience is good, so is the service. Good staff.Sharing my food experience, so with respect to make everything dance they forget to add the most important ingredients called taste. Being a cocktail lover I started with a cocktail called Amul Old Fashioned, I thought it will be something creative or sone different taste. To my surprise, it was not even as good as how an old fashioned drink should be. I will prefer anytime a local bar.Now let’s talk about appetizer, I ordered Dahi Puri and Avocado and green chickpea bhel. Fancy name, isn’t it? They were decent and creative. I liked the way they were served. Taste was okay.Coming to main course, being a vegetarian it was a tough call to chose what to eat. Hardly 3-4 options, so I chose Tandoori Mushroom. I didn’t what it was, served fancy yet I was feeling I am having raw mushroom. Disappointed with the main course. For dessert, I ordered Rum Balls. The only good thing for the night. I loved the taste, if I visit again this will be the only item I’m going to order.Overall, I believe this definitely not a place for vegetarians. They have limited options. But I believe they definitely might be serving decent non vegetarian cuisine. The restaurant is pricey and if I have to spend that much in the end, I will prefer some other Indian restaurant. All the best to the team Baar Baar.
I was here with my family this weekend and we love the place. The food is amazing, cocktails are great and the servers are very friendly! I only wish they had a better person at the reception. She was not welcoming at all, did not carry even a smile- that is the least we can expect from a person who first receives the customers.
This is hands down the best Indian restaurant in NYC. It has a classy vibe and a great service. Their cocktails have some interesting names and flavors. And the food is a great combination and balance of gourmet and authentic Indian flavors. Highly recommend going here for a nice date or when celebrating.
The menu was very different and new. Looked creative than the ones I tried earlier. I tried quite a number of appetizers and the main course which they call them as Small Plates and Large Plates.Dahi Puri and Pani puri did not taste like the authentic ones which were acceptable as they were trying to be creative by introducing the new flavors.Loved the Avocado chick peas bhel That is something I have never tasted earlier.Cauliflower 65 was okay. You get very less quantity for what you pay atleast for the small plates. For the large plates, if you order the curries(they have specific dish name) you will have to order the sides (naan, rice).Paneer pinwheel was good to try 👍Safrron rice was okay. Their bread (naan) was flavorful.Tried the kaala khatta drink. It had the burst of flavors. I wouldnt recommend to someone who would try something new. I felt it hid all the taste buds.Ended my meal with date jaggery ice cream which I think is pretty good. This place is fully packed with people in the indoor seating. Outdoor seating was a bit uncomfortable.Definitely recommend to someone who is ready to try some new version of Indian food.
Do yourself a favor and visit this lovely restaurant in the Lower East Side. The service is unmatched. The staff truly cares about your experience. The food is absolutely amazing – everything we tasted melted in other mouths. Absolutely the best meal we had while in Manhattan. Highly recommend!
Overrated, wouldnt recommend.Felt rushed to leave.Portion size on apps is so small.Portion size of main dish is good for a person, but small given the price.Never had Indian food not come with complimentary rice, have to pay extra. The dishes were not even Indian food, they just used Indian food names. The mango chili marg was really good. The ambience is nice.Live music was way too loud.Didnt know who our waiter was, there were different waiters stopping by each time.
We had a fantastic time at Baar Baar, because of how wonderful our server, Sahel, was. He sprinkled joy for the Bollywood Brunch (lots of music and a large crowd) we attended inadvertently, impressive anticipation of what would make our brunch even better, and huge smiles across our meal. And, the food was very tasty. I lived in India for 3yrs, and can say Baar Baar pulled off Modern Indian (at reasonable prices) better than any place I can think of in the US.
Love their brunch menu more than dinner/pre fixe as a vegetarian. Also the weekends are basically Bollywood party brunches. Lot of fun with live music and dancing to groovy Bollywood beats. My only disappointment is the egg kejriwal, I wish they got that right. The kulcha and keema pav are great.
Food was good; Indian cuisine with a fusion twist to it. Service needs working on, whenever I wanted to get a waiter I could not get ahold of one, the quality of service itself was ok. I wish their wine selection would be more extensive to pair well with the food, but overall a decent experience.
Very tasty, BEAUTIFUL Interior. ~$30 a platePerfect for an anniversary date, small celebrations (less than 8 people)Favorite Small Plates: Chicken Roasted Ghee & Cauliflower 65Favorite Cocktail: Goa Punch (sweet like sherbet ice cream)HOWEVER some critiques (need bigger portions & issues with RSVP)The small plates are VERY small 🤔The large plates are look normal size lol.I wish the small plates and large plates were bigger based on the price tag. I like bringing leftovers home and I naturally have a small appetite. But I feel like I could probably eat 2 or 3 of their small plates.Second critique is that I came with 10 friends rsvping, but we couldnt sit together or else we would need to pay for a special menu which means $95 PER Person. That totally felt money hungry to me especially with small portions. Ofc I rather sit in two tables than pay so much extra, but in general why disincentivize rsvping more than 8 people? What would make this 5 stars?- bigger portions- I personally liked almost everything, but I didnt SUPER LOVE any of the items except maybe the cauliflower, but it was so little🥺.- I tried almost all the cocktails options, I liked Goa Punch. If you have refined tastes you will definitely have fun trying them all out. Very salty.- If they let our party stay connected. They really put us in a sour mood with that. But its fine, now we know, dont ever bring more than 8 friends here unless you want to spend 95$ each. 🤷♀️ That really sucks. And because of that Im probably not coming back, but I still enjoyed the experience.
Went on Saturday for brunch with 12 of my friends since we heard so many good things. TERRIBLE service - waitress was incredibly rude to all of us and had an condescending tone. Incredibly overpriced, subpar food. Definitely NOT worth the money. Food came late and they wouldn’t let us stay at the table longer to finish eating. There were insect traps under our table that stuck to our shoes. Drinks were mostly ice and bartenders were rude. For $48 that was the most expensive flavored ice water I ever drank. At the end, they robbed us of around $700 and it was NOT worth the money.Only good thing was the singer - he was incredibly talented and so sweet!
Food and drinks were outstanding but Im not a fan of time restrictions. We were given 90 mins and then asked to basically leave. Atmosphere is not conducive to making a nice evening of dining. Im old fashioned and like to make a evening relishing my company as well as atmosphere.
Oh man, what a fun place with exceptional food to boot. Great atmosphere, friendly staff and live Bollywood band on the brunch days. The restaurant its self is so lovely and there outdoor space is so well done.I cant talk highly enough of there food. So if you like indian with a little fusion get on down and eat here.
A note for vegans: while the menu encouragingly has a vegan section, none of it is available for brunch. The brunch menu has only two vegan options, and you have to ask someone to even know which ones those are. What I ended up with was very good and the atmosphere is fantastic, but it was disappointing to not have more options. Still a place that I would recommend though.
We went here for brunch. The appetizers were just at par. Nothing special. We ordered pani puri, cauliflower 65 and chilli cheese nan. We did not like pani puri and cauliflower 65. Chilli cheese nan was good. Coming to entrees, we ordered:1. Amritsari Kulcha - kulcha ok but chole were very cold as if serviced directly from the fridge. Asked them to warm it up at least and give it2. Veg biryani - It was good compared to other items3. Mac and cheese - as per my husband, it was nice4. Shrimp kolivada - it was niceWe ordered the chilli guava and chilli mango margaritas. Drinks were awesome. The deserts were really nice too. We ordered chocolate rum cake and mango pavlova. Both were nice. Ambience and service was nice and we enjoyed the live music. But all in all the food seemed to be just ok. Just a one time for us.
I have been here multiple times. Generally even with a reservation it’s taken about 30 minutes to be seated. Food is average at best with the the portion sizes getting smaller and food presentation get worse over the last few years. The flavor profile of the food is subpar compared to some of the other top Indian restaurants in the city. You come here for the vibe (which is a bit more club like).
Food was good. Service much less so. Waiter was dismissive basically telling me the first drink I asked about was the one to get. Didn’t translate ingredients for me. It had pomegranate, not a fan. Was also not very helpful when I tried to get more information on dietary restrictions. Finally, if your dinner companion speaks the language and you don’t, be prepared to be a non-person for the remainder of the meal
Insanely overpriced. Small portions for the insane price. The food taste was no different from any other run of the mill Indian restaurant. Lots of cream. The waiter was great. The chili garlic Naan was special. I would not return given the insane prices for food, not special enough.
The whole experience was poorly organized. The hostess (very rude) sort of disregarded our reservation. It was at 1:30pm we were there at 1:15 in a line. Seated at 2:15pm (in the patio section) even though the main dining hall had plenty of room. When we were seated, they told us they were out of the 2 most popular dishes - the rest of the menu was average. The singer was the only good thing about this whole brunch! He crushed it, the restaurant itself was disorganized with a very rude staff, and subpar menu.
Ohhh man! The flavors in this place are simply out of the world. We had to wait for an hour to get seated on a cold January evening. This is a slightly pricy place. We ordered a jackfruit and potato kofta in a spinach gravy, two kinds of kulchas and three appetizers. We went as a group of three and everything we were served had exactly three servings. The sweet potato Chaat was my favorite as it combined a few unusual things like raspberries, sweet potato and kale tempura along with traditional Indian chutneys. The flavor combinations and textures simply work and delight the mind. Would highly recommend this place for a couples night out too!
*Have to give it 1 star, but I would rather take stars away*.I came here with my brother not long ago. Following a birthday meal which was mediocre at best for the extortionate prices that we paid (>$100 for one main each), we received extremely unpleasant service after the meal concluded. We tipped what we deemed was acceptable ($20), but the waiter then approached us after payment and started threatening us and wanted to receive more. He stated the tips were insufficient and formed part of his livelihood. He stressed how the US has a tipping culture and it was insulting that we did not tip more. This was despite the fact that we waited >1 hour for our food, we received the wrong food at one point which had to be taken away, and our drinks took a while to arrive. Another colleague had to remind him about our food too. This all happened on a Tuesday evening when it was not particularly busy.Overall, an extremely unpleasant experience. I would strongly urge you to find elsewhere to eat in the city. See, for example, Saravana Bhavan where customer service was excellent.
This was a very odd experience. They put us in a table in some corner that was really dank and dark and no one was around us. The music was also really depressing - me and my friends came to turn up, but we instead turned down because the music was super sad. Also, the service was interesting. Our server kept coming to clean our table even while we were still eating, and it made us a little uncomfortable that he fully did this while we were eating our food. Also, it was way too overpriced for mediocre food and drinks. Will not be returning.
Very good food, lively entertaining restaurant. We had a big crowd with 55 people and they were able to serve us and others at pace. loved their Kerri Mule drink Paneer Chili rolls, Paneer tika. People enjoyed lamb chicken shaahi mashroom. Great place definitely recommend to all.
One of the worst dining experiences I’ve had recently. I normally never write reviews. I used to love this place, but it has gone way downhill. First of all, I never got my drink. My partner got his drink right away, and when I asked multiple waiters about mine, they said that the bar was backed up. I kept seeing others receive their drinks. After a while, I just gave up (ended up never receiving it). The dahi poori was good, but the mains were mediocre at best. The naan was burnt. They seem extremely short staffed, so I feel bad for the waitstaff, but the management needs to do something about that. Pretty disappointed overall.
One of the most enjoyable dining experiences we’ve had in years. The service was incredible, everything came out very quickly and was absolutely delicious. I highly recommend the beef short rib curry, and the butter chicken, which I did not take get to take a picture of because we ate it so fast!
Really nice place to have dinner out!! They have very pretty outdoor seating. The plating of food is very pretty as well! I guess for the part of town that it’s located, the $$$ seems justified. We ordered a bunch of small plates, that way we could try more dishes. I recommend this Baar Baar will visit again!Pictured are Dahi Puri, lamb Keema, paneer wheels, onion kulcha, sweet potato chaat, and bread (served with lamb keema).
Absolutely amazing! Very much enjoyed! Beautiful ambiance. We picked from the tasting menu. $52 a person. Highly recommend because you get to try so many of the beautiful plates.Dahi Puri is delightful. The kolkata jackfruit is INCREDIBLE! I liked the cauliflower but wasn’t mind blowing. Bronzini is cooked to perfection. The mustard sauce isn’t my favorite. I would have paired with a different sauce. Mushrooms and Polenta- enjoyed the crispy garlic. Curry chickpea and naan- love love!Overall, YES YES YES! I’ll absolutely come back!Thank you for a lovely experience. 🧡
Restaurant has regressed significantly in terms of quality of food as well as general hospitality. Third visit and likely last one. Host/wait time over an hour despite a reservation, seated in a shanty without any heating and very slow service. The food is unmemorable and lacks flavor, huge drop off
Really good Indian food and vibe inside the restaurant but terribly small portion sizes for the amounts charged. The quality and taste was top notch but the quantities were completely inadequate.Dal Makhni, mushroom biryani, malai paneer pinwheel are a must try .In the appetizers, cauliflower 65 was very good.
Food was ok. Nothing exceptional. Staff (host who seats you) was kind of rude. My phone battery was dying & I went twice with a request to let me charge for a few minutes as I needed my phone for train tickets to go back home & they refused saying they didn’t have any chargers while I could see at least 3 chargers on the desk. A little courtesy & kindness goes a long way (especially for guests who will be spending $150+ at your restaurant) & apparently they didn’t learn that anywhere. Otherwise service was ok.
If youre looking for a good Indian fusion spot with creative and classic food options I highly recommend Baar Baar.Note: If youre not into loud restaurants blasting Bollywood music, this may not be the best place for you.Ambiance: The restaurant is upscale and has gorgeous decor, I love the teal look. The problem is that its LOUD. Really loud. It makes it hard sometimes to have conversation with your dinner mates. They also have these Bollywood brunches over the weekend and I swear it feels like its turned into a club.Price: The food here is overpriced especially for the portion size. The drinks taste good but also overpriced considering what were getting. After all of this, why do I give it a 4 star?? Because at the end of the day I care about the foooooddd. The food here is phenomenal. I dont think Ive ever had such creative Indian dishes other than at Junoon. The dishes are so flavorful, my mouth is watering as I write this review. My favorite dishes are the malai paneer pinwheel, cauliflower, avocado and green chickpea bhel, and the black dairy dal (dal makhani). I also enjoy their chickpea curry . The food can be a bit spicy but if you ask them to make it mild, they will do so. They also do a great job plating it in a beautiful manner and that just enhances things. They also are willing to make food Jain for you and I really appreciate that kind of flexibility from an upscale Indian restaurant. Ive been to other upscale places in the city and they get a bit snobbish about it. They also have a separate vegan menu which is a nice addition.
I feel this place is over rated for the taste it can offer especially vegetarian food..The drinks are awesome. The appetizer were average I would say. The Dahi Puri was a disaster to say the least. All Paneer items are completely below the normal yardstick.. The veg kofta on the other hand was delicious. I would rate the sides to be more flavorful and impacting than the mains.
I went to this place on Friday with a legit reservation. We ordered dahi puri and avocado bhel. Both small plates were disapponting. It was Indian fusion but had nothing Indian in it. Super disappointed with how they are potraying Indian food and spoiling such beautiful dishes. Also it was a 90 min limit but the servers were constantly bugging about taking away plates and pressuring us to leave. I have been to this place 6 times now but never had such a bad experience. Never going back again!
Wondering where to outdoor dine in these frigid temperatures?? Baar baar is the place to be! The set up is warm and cozy, I could even take off my coat! We got cocktails to start and I wasn’t super impressed, there was no presentation which I usually expect there to be at this price. We actually ended up getting gin and tonics for our second round and that really hit the spot. We got the paneer pinwheels and they were SO good! The crispy shell on the outside with the soft paneer on the inside really hit the spot. For our main, we ordered a classic butter chicken and some garlic naan, and I have to say I was skeptical about the taste first but it really grew on me. It had the sweetness of the butter but a slow burn in the back of my throat and it was really yummy with the naan. The chicken pieces were so soft and cooked to perfection. Would recommend and definitely will be coming back!
Food was average but cocktail was great. For dine in they will set time for you and you have to order first eat first and leave lol 😂I was waiting for my friend for 15minutes and the waiter came and asked me to order also told i cant wait just seating and not ordering. Even after finishing the food they will push you to leave. Terrible experience lol
Baar Baar is one of the more refined experiences you can get.The place is very busy and with good reason! From tasteful food, great atmosphere to the very spot on service.I really recommend this place for large parties as well as an intimate date, you’ll have a good time.A word of caution though - if you’re a person who enjoys chatting with you waiter, you will not be getting that. The service is optimized to provide you with food and keep your table clean.
Quality of food is good. Service is good as well.Giving 3 star for overpriced mango lassi. $12 for mago lassi in a tube glass with 4 cubes of ice.Not worth a buy.Melon chaat is really bad. $15 for 6 picece of fruit dipped in a sweet sauce. They tried to create a new dish for the sake of putting something new on menu.
Really really good food. But the waitress is either upset or high. She is very rude and interrupts us all the times. Had us repeats what we like to order and gave weird attitude after she heard the orders. Had to asked to switch waitress. Didnt expect this anywhere in the city
I wanted this experience to result in a literal “baar baar”,unfortunately it will not.Salmon was not fresh and rubbery.Paneer pinwheels-Not impressed.Butter chicken -standard,nothing special.Desserts were delicious.Service slow but pleasant.Furnishings look like they could do with a wash or a dry clean…
We had heard a lot about Baar Baar, but it is highly overrated. Not worth the money at all. We had made a reservation earlier, still had to wait for 20 mins before getting the table. The only available was outside, the heaters were installed but not working, we had no option but to eat in the cold. Their paneer pinwheel large plate was the only paneer entree and didnt feel like paneer - felt like some Maida rolls in a makhni gravy. Not worth the hype.
Had a really bad experience with the staff and rules in place at Baar Baar. We came in to celebrate a friend’s bday and had reservations in place. We ordered some drinks and sat at our table. The place was quite empty on our side, only two other tables were filled but the rest were empty. However, once we got the food menu we noticed there were a lot peanut dishes and decided to leave earlier. One of our friends is severely allergic to peanuts and we didn’t want to risk cross-contamination despite the server promising they would be able to provide alternatives. We mentioned we would just order drinks bc of the allergy and suddenly the staff’s demeanour changed entirely. They told us to move to the bar bc we had taken reservations that could’ve gone to someone else. Honestly there was more than enough space and we would’ve stayed to order more drinks but the staff were very adamant so we left immediately. Not sure I’ll be back again bc of how strict these rules are.
I enjoyed the tasting menu which features inventive and varied options at a reasonable price. A kulcha, pani puris, then we ordered the sweet potato chaat and cauliflower 65, then the paneer and jackfruit kofta. Finished off with a pistachio ice cream / carrot cake and a filter coffee cake. We ordered two cocktails each as well.First off the cocktails are fantastic. Inventive without being gimmicky, balanced well. The old fashioned was a tad sweet for my taste but the Amrud is an innovation that is a true winner! Would highly recommend. The chaat and cauliflower both were well presented and flavored adequately but I found the spice level to be very muted. A 65 is meant to be bold, an explosion of flavor and this dish was too quiet. I would suggest boosting the spice level if you order it. The chaat was good but these types of kale chaat fusion dishes are now common place in New York’s Indian scene and risk being overexposed.I can’t say enough about the paneer! These dishes are often too creamy, bland and one-note. But here we had beautifully layered spices, buttery and sweet but not overly so. A true standout. The jackfruit kofta was an interesting idea but the saag was a bit boring. It was a solid saag but after a few bites, this dish’s overall blandness began to hinder it. I would suggest trying something other than spinach to mix it up or replacing it.The garlic naan was solid but under-garlicked.The desserts: the carrot cake was great in the best Indian tradition - none of that sticky cloying sweetness one gets from American versions. The pistachio ice cream was incredible - the nuance of flavor and freshness makes it a true standout and makes you disappointed in commercial pistachio ice cream which is far more one-note. The coffee cake is passable but left no impression. All in all, Baar Baar is affordable and inventive at this price point. I would definitely recommend. Great service and ambiance.
My friends and I went in to try the restaurant week menu. We were pleasantly surprised by its variety, the quality of service, and the creative twist to some of the traditional dishes. Maybe the appetizers were too good that when we got to the big plates, we were a little disappointed. My chicken was too sweet, and my friend’s jackfruit dumplings were too salty. Overall, it’s still a great experience!
Had the worst experience at this place. The manager was very rude, disrespectful, and had no consideration for customer experience. We visited here with family and the restaurant experience spoiled our entire day.The food and drinks were both horrible and mediocre. To provide a few details:Tandoori Cauliflower was uncookedMargaritas were sugary and poorly madeNo salt in chicken tikka (tasted more like butter chicken)Our server could not even explain the menu well. Never entering baar baar again!
Likely our new favorite Indian spot. Came on a Friday night. Happy hour special was dynamite with $7 cocktails and $5 snacks. Food was delicious, especially the chicken 65, garlic naan, and chutneys. Homemade ice creams were also tasty. Service at the bar was great, and warm ambiance. Well worth a visit!
Came here for brunch today and loved and food and the cocktails! For drinks, we ordered the Baar Baar Sour and the Hyderabad Collins. Both cocktails were well balanced, inventive, and amazing. For food, we ordered the chicken khati roll, the paneer pinwheel, a chili cheese naan, peas pulao, and masala fries. The pinwheel paneer was in a makhani sauce and was both unique and tasty (I will absolutely come back for this dish). The chili cheese naan was not bad but I wish I went with garlic naan instead (as a benchmark). Chicken khati roll was very good and the flavors were balanced (as per my husband since I dont eat meat). We loved the food and amazing service at Baar Baar and plan to come back for some of the small plates and for dinner.
Great new restaurant with an amazing vibe. I highly recommend the green pea kulcha, dahi puri and the aloo tikki. The mushroom entree was alright, but I really enjoyed the Paneer Pinwheel. We also had the tuna Bhel that was different but delicious nonetheless (tasted like a poke bowl but with Indian flavors). They have excellent and innovative drinks (loved the Kahwa Chai and the Mule), although the bartender made our drinks a bit too strong. The desserts were definitely a highlight, we had the chocolate ragi brownie and the carrot cake. Both were very good. Service overall was not bad but they seemed to not entirely follow what we said, and often spoke over us. All in all, a wonderful dining experience and I would definitely go again!
Delicious!!! My friend and I went at 2pm and they were only selling from the brunch menu (just a heads up) and got the mac and cheese and wrap. If you are trying to decide between the two get the wrap, it was definitely the winner, but they were both delicious. We also got garlic nan on the side, also very scrummy, it was fluffy and buttery. Lastly we also got the mocktails, which is a must here, they are amazing!
Very trendy and chic but stays true to their Indian food! The culture is evident all while catering to a wide range of people from all walks of life. They have a DJ playing music, at least when I went on Friday night around 8pm. He was playing very pop-like Indian music. That, the decor, dim lighting and ambiance all creates a great atmosphere. Well stocked bar. Indoor and outdoor seating. Comfy seats and a wide variety of seating. Lots of single stall bathrooms that are also very cute, clean and maintained throughout the night. Helpful and kind wait staff. It gets very busy so you should make a reservation, but it isnt necessary. Large space! I would definitely recommend for large or small parties, or even a date.
What an amazing night! Fabulous drinks, delicious food. Our vegi friends seemed quite happy and content. The Kheema Pao and Lambchops were out of this world! Capped an amazing night with live Bollywood singing from Kunal Lamba, my oh my!!! We were all dancing by our table!
Definitely THE in place for Indian diners. The food was fantastic and was good for small group sharing. There is a bar serving all sorts of drinks. There is modern Indian dance music in the background. The whole place was vibrant with energy. The clientele was predominantly Indian. I am non Indian but I thoroughly enjoyed the meal and experience there.
We came in for a late dinner and were taken to our table quickly. The drinks were really good. I got the Khubani Panna. For appetizers, we tried some different dishes. My favorites were dahi puri and paneer chilli roll. For main entrees, I really liked the lamb shank nihari. The saffron rice side was disappointing though, not much flavor at all. My friend got the jackfruit dumpling and didn’t care for it much. Overall, it was a good experience, but compared to its sister restaurant Rooh in San Francisco, I think Baar Baar can improve.
Even though outdoor dining is the only option right now, we both still loved Baar Baar. We got the fixed menu and loved everything. Excellent food, delicious drinks and light tasty desserts. Wild definitely go back and looking forward to trying indoor dining in the not too distant future.
Had dinner at baar baar and loved every bit of it. Every dish was flavorful, atmosphere was modern and music was good. Wall art caught our eye too. We came here on a Saturday night and got reservations for 9:30pm. Place was buzzing and we ended up staying till past midnight. Their sea bass was delicious, so was butter chicken and nihari. Kulchas were spot on. Kashmiri lamb ribs were melting in our mouth.
I went there last Friday night, and I can honestly say its the best Indian food Ive had. I dont normally like dahi puri, but LOVED the one there and it was so unique. The drinks were amazing. The cauliflower 65 and yogurt is incredible. Also go the malai chicken and paneer pinwheel which I would order again - absolutely delicious. Love the place, great ambiance. Stayed there for hours. Great service too. Ive been to a lot of Indian restaurants all over the country and this by far is my favorite.
Food very tasty with an interesting modern twist on Indian dishes. Some western influence but still keeps its roots authentic. Service friendly. Only complaint is that it gets loud... But this also means it is a fun atmosphere and the last time I went there was a lovely pre wedding party taking place.
Visited during restaurant week and got to try a lot of the menu since most of the food is designed to be shared. Plush decor and really great service. Favorite dishes included the short rib curry, fried cauliflower appetizer, and mushrooms in polenta. Cocktails were inventive and fun too.
This is my first #nycrestaurantweek restaurant for the season, after being down with bronchitis over the past week. Unlike the other mid-range Indian restaurants Ive been to in New York (Rahi, Junoon), Baar Baar seems to serve traditional Indian fare, but refined. Compared to a budget hole-in-the-wall Indian eatery, the flavors are more intentional and singular. That is not to say the flavors arent complex - they are (I mean, how could you not with Indian cooking?!), but each dish stands more distinctly apart from another. The Dahi Puri was unabashedly fragrant - a perfect introduction to the meal, like a guide bringing you on a tour of the different spices of Indian cuisine. The meats were cooked perfectly, each retaining its juices significantly. I had the beef short rib curry as my main, which was only as rich as it needed to be the carry the gravity of the spices it held; the meat was so tender it basically melted into the curry as I cut into it. I could not find a fault.1. Dahi Puri (Tamarind, Avocado, Yogurt Mousse, Raspberry)2. Chili Garlic Prawn (Peanut Thecha Masala, Young Garlic Chutney)3. Lamb Sheek Kebab (Mint & Cilantro Emulsion, Pickled Shallot)4. Beef Short Rib Curry (Roasted Baby Turnip & Carrot)5. Traditional Butter Chicken (Red Pepper Makhani)6. Chocolate Rum Ball (Milk Ice Cream, Kumquat & Chilli Chutney)
Baar Baar – More Like Never Never. My wife and I companied by our two young children, visited the Baar Baar Indian Cuisine on a beautiful Saturday evening for a wonderful time in New York City. However, our experience was one of the worst we had experienced. We did not expect this from a one of the TOP end restaurant in NYC.Sitting: We are family of four who made reservation in advance. We would have expected to be seated in the restaurant section of the restaurant. We arrived 10 minutes before our reservation time of 7:30 PM. We waited for 15 minutes before being seated and were given a table in the Bar section of the restaurant and that too next to a speaker that’s blasting music in the bar section. All evening long, we were almost shouting at each other trying to have a conversation. When we arrived, we did notice some empty tables in the restaurant area.Customer Care: The Indian restaurants are notorious for not changing the silverware after the Starter/Small Plates are served, and main course is about to be presented. As expected, at Baar Baar, our server did not change our silverware after our starters were completed with starters/small plates. However, we did notice that the same server changed the silverware for the four (non-Indians) sitting at the table next to us as they completed their small plates. We requested ours to be changed, but the request was ignored.Food: The food was decent. I wasn’t wowed with it, but the Dishses had its own style and flavor. However, the small plates arrived at different time, and almost 20 minutes between each other.Drinks: They got this down right. We ordered KAIRI MULE and ANAR SWIZZLE. The were very unique and flavorful.Overall : We will never visit this restaurant again, and will recommend not to with our friends and family.
Amazing food! We had the beef croquettes, wild Ecuadorian prawn, chicken Malai Tikka and lamb Keema. Everything was very good. All the flavors were on point. The prices are a little bit high but if you could swing it, it’s a great night out. The wine is also very good too. I highly recommend it!
Ive been to this place twice now, and Ive had two different experiences on both occasions. The first time we went there, we were a group of 7 and had reservations on a Tuesday night. We didnt have any problems getting a reservation for 8:30 pm.We tried most of their innovative, smartly named cocktails, and they were all good and refreshing too.For food, definitely try the Dahi Puri ($9) and Chicken 65 ($14). If you only want to have a single appetizer, Lamb Kheema Hyderabadi ($15) is a no-brainer.The second time we went here, we were a group of 4 on a Friday night. The earliest we could get a table was at 10 pm. We were particularly disappointed with our experience the second time because we really wanted to try out the Vegetarian and the Non-Vegetarian thali and were told, that they did not have both. This to us was very disappointing. The team also got our order wrong. We had ordered a Chicken 65 and were served Cauliflower 65. This was rectified later when we informed them that our order was incorrect.Food is just okay, definitely on the expensive end and price-to-portion ratio isnt that great. On both occasions, service did stand out and the staff was welcoming enough, 1 star just for them!
This place has been on my list ever since it opened up. I’m always in search of good creative Indian food. This lived up to my taste buds. I like the decor, very indo western and they also kept the music to go with the theme.Cocktails were fantastic. I had the royal Mawalin which was just how I expected.strong and not sweet!!Let’s now talk about the food which is the most interesting part-Cauliflower 65-suggested by the waiter , it was good.Lamb keema-you MUST get this!!! It melts in your mouth Nd perfectly spiced.Tune Bhel- was really good too. I recommend it.What you should most certainly get is double ka Mehta desert. It’s beyond amazing and not too sweet.
I was there for birthday dinner with my whole family iwas looking for authentic Indian food from long time Im realy surprised I got it finally today and name of restaurant is according to hindi laguge baar baar means again again its definitely I will be there baar baar keep it up
The mahaul was electrifying !! The live band made our day, the singer, Dhawal and guitarist, Vinil were great. With so many Hindi songs covering different genres, there was something for everyone! Pretty much everyone started dancing in the restaurant! I have been in the US for more than a decade and have never seen anything like this. The staff was also so nice to just let everyone enjoy! Not to forget, the food was good too. This is a great place to hang out in NYC!
Hands down the best Indian food Ive ever had in my life. I was visiting from out of town and a lot of my friends raved about Baar Baar, so when I checked it out I was more than impressed. The price is on the higher side, but the quality of the food is incredible. The chicken dishes were super well cooked, and the flavor here is something you just dont get anywhere else. The atmosphere here is super fun with great Bollywood music playing in the background. I heard that before covid, it was one of the best places in the city for bottomless brunch- but they did a great job setting up tables outdoors to make it covid friendly.
Baar Baar is an interesting Indian fusion restaurant to say the least...the cuisine is not at molecular level as it claims to be Indian Gastro bar but the fusion is good enough to give its 4+* rating.Loved the lamb keema with chili cheese naan.Malai chicken macaroni was sub par where as Amritsari fish didnt live upto the name. Chicken katti roll was good and spicy.
We were pleasantly surprised by Baar Baar. The service was great, from the host taking our coats for coat check to our waiter. Im Indian so Ive been eating different types of indian food all my life. Baar Baar is more of a modern indian restaurant so you wont find your typical dishes (at least presented the same way). I ordered the KAHWA-CHAI cocktail, it was great and reminded me of a indian take on a Old Fashioned. To eat we got the Paneer Chilli, Tandoori Mushroom, Lamb Keema, & Garlic naan. Everything was fantastic but the Lamb Keema was the best. Will definitely return.
This restaurant is a modern take on the Indian cuisine and loved every dish we ordered. Really good service.Highly recommend the Chilly Paneer, Potato Tikki, and Paneer curry. The Masala Chocolate dessert was really good. In cocktails would recommend the New Delhi Sour and Kairi Mule.Additionally, the owner Payal personally came and inquired about our experience which was a really nice touch.
The food here is nice and very interesting menu. The service was good however the servers were not very knowledgeable about their menu. I do think it is still a little over priced for what they serve but with nice ambience and being an NYC fine dine, may be they can get away with it. Overall, I would still give it 3.5 stars if I could, but with no option to do that, I will let it go with 4.
Unique food options like the chicken 65 biryani which was very good. The vibes were amazing, great decor, and Sunday brunch featured a live singer which was a great touch. Plenty of outdoor seating in the Covid era as well. Its on the pricier side for food, but overall a worthwhile experience
Excellent fusion Indian restaurant! Loved the menu and the food - very different and original while still retaining the Indian flavours! We had the fabulous kulchas, excellent small plates and the main dishes were great too. The service could’ve been better but we are definitely coming back.
First things first: the food here is excellent! That said, if youre expecting traditional Indian food, this is not the place for you - this is a modern take on traditional dishes. But while the dishes are short of traditional approach, they absolutely do not disappoint on taste and presentation. The restaurant decor and ambiance are also top-notch, as is the service (usually). Weve been here a few times, and on our last trip, it was one of the least pleasant experiences Ive had at a restaurant. Ill chalk it up to a busy Saturday night, and perhaps them screwing up reservations - because (a) we were sat at a table on the bar side (even though wed booked reservations for the main dining hall), and (b) they rushed us out at the end when, presumably, the next party got there for their reservation. But again, lets brush that aside - things like that happen - but definitely ask to be sat in the main dining room if you go (I suspect that had something to do with the B- service on our last visit.
Beautiful trendy restaurant near Nolita. I was a fan of the eclectic menu that takes a modern spin on beloved Indian favourites. We had the papad, vegetable platter and aloo tikki. Loved everything, especially the tikki and jackfruit pattie. Definitely will return to try the seafood and meat dishes another time. While prices are steeper than Id prefer for South Asian cuisine, we were quite happy with the dishes and were definitely full by the end of our meal.
Absolutely phenomenal food and drinks. The chutneys were so good that we ended up getting more naan just so we could finish them. The servers took their time to explain everything (as we had no clue what to expect), and the whole experience was delightful. Definitely try the chai, or the mango cocktail if you like sweeter drinks.
A complete brunch experience! Beautiful decor, live indie Bollywood music, amazing tasty dishes (plenty to eat) and bottomless drinks. Great vegetarian options and their chicken is halal. Not to mention exceptional service, my server was phenomenal. Will definitely be coming back very soon. Perfect for a fun brunch for a birthday, bridal shower or even a hangout!
This place definitely loved up to the hype. We didnt have much of a choice because we ordered the pre fix menu. Their modern take on chicken 65 is amazing. Its right amount of spicy and tender. I want to impressed by their risotto but their cotton candy tickled my sweet tooth.
Dining in Siberia.Made reservation for indoor dining but was seated at the outdoor tent. The receptionist said it’s “indoor” because it’s in the tent. The problem was that they had limited space heaters. We were both freezing. I had to put on my bubble jacket. Food got cold quickly. Fingers were numb. It ruined the culinary experience.Food was good though, a bit smaller on the portion size but good.
Baar Baar exceeded all of my expectations! I went there for Restaurant Week and we split a lot of their most popular dishes. They were all delicious! The Chicken 65 and cauliflower appetizers were amazing! And the Butter chicken was one of the best dishes I’ve ever tasted—so flavorful and the chicken basically melts in your mouth. The desserts were so good too, I especially loved the rum ball with sorbet. The ambiance is beautiful and classy, the food is flavorful and delicious!!! I’ll definitely be back soon!!!
We been to this place for this evening. It was our first time there and last our family been to NYC was in 2019, thanks to the Covid times. This dinner was supposed to be my pre birthday celebration. When we entered the place, we were to be very honest, not very pleased by the table we were given. But I totally understand the reasons and so no complains for that. It would add to the experience if we would be seated at a little different spot but it definitely didnt ruin our experience.I did my research well on what we wanted to order because I was hoping nothing should go wrong. All of the items we ordered, exceeded our expectations in appearance and taste. And the best part for me was the treatment from our main server and the assistant server. Debank is the name of the main server and he made todays dinner one of my memorable ones for my birthday. The service could be quick for those who like to eat their food slow but it wasnt a problem to us since we were actually hungry and the fast service helped. But I am sure if talked into, they can pace their service accordingly.Awesome food, good music, very friendly staff. We got recommendations from our friends and I will definitely recommend this place to my other friends.Best wishes.
Food above mediocre but didnt blow my mind. The chili garlic shrimp small plate was actually pretty good and the highlight of the meal. The super spicy house fermented hot sauce was not really that spicy at all. Green pea goat cheese bread was fine, lamb shank and beef short rib curry were not bad. But overall the flavors felt a bit too thin and left some complexity and depth to be desired. This place is definitely more about the upscale ambiance and expansive bar. Just the food itself isnt worth the price.
I ventured into this exorbitantly priced restaurant because of the hype it had generated. The menu is advertised as an Indian love affair, however the concoction of spices in our dishes were a stark contrast to that statement. The food is mediocre (putting it mildly) and overpriced. Their service was... lets put it this way- non-existent. The ambience is ruined by the deafening live music, which is nothing short of a horror scream. Requests to turn it down were met with a No. The perpetual noise meant the server misheard our orders for food and drinks and/or other requests, and then blatantly dismissed his responsibility when we politely pointed it out. Overall, the decibel levels gave us a headache and we could not even have a conversation with the person sitting a feet across from us.This is my first ever review. I took the time to post this because Ive never been this disappointed with a dining experience. Theres tons of good Indian food that you can eat around the city at very reasonable prices. Go anywhere but here.
The food was alright for its value. The jackfruit cutlet took the prize for us. We ordered paneer pinwheel too and it was sweet, even though we asked for something spicy. The juhu Margherita had a less Kala khatta flavor, that should have given it a tangy taste! Desert was awesome. The presentation was brilliant and the service was nice. We went there at 9pm and everything was prompt.
We found HAIR in one of the dishes. When we notified the waitress about it, at first she apologised and offered free dessert to everyone. Since we booked reservations at a different place for desert, we asked her to void the half eaten dish (obviously we aren’t gonna eat something with hair in it) and she said some disrespectful comments (that we were cheap).Free dessert for 4 people would cost 80-90$ and the dish with hair was 30$. It’s basic mathematics that they will be gaining from this, but the waitress didn’t think this through before calling us cheap.Later the manager apologised and voided the dish, and also offered free dessert but we declined and paid the amount along with a very good tip and left the place.Never returning here. They are both unprofessional and unhygienic.
The food there was excellent but the only thing I didn’t like that was the beef short rib I got this taste that it was from long time ago frozen not fresh at all. Had that frozen fishy smell and taste. Which is why I am giving a 3 star other than that everything else was great.
I’m so sad to rate my experience 3 stars because I was excited to come for such a long awaited time. I came in with two of my friends from out of state to celebrate my dear friend’s birthday. We had reservations ahead of time and came on time. Unfortunately the lady in the front who seemed to be managing where parties sit told us that we would have to sit on the patio outside or in the side room. Obviously that is understandable if we didn’t have a reservation and came last minute or if we came late and no other tables were available, but there were plenty of small tables available. Fortunately, our waitress was super helpful and helped us find a seat indoors. Unfortunately I saw many other parties being turned away from seating indoors for the same reason. This lady seems to manage the front because she was telling other hostesses to do the same and “not give people options where they want to sit”. It’s quite unfortunate that that’s how they want to treat their customers who come from all over to get this experience. I wish that when making a reservation they rather ask if they have preference of sitting indoors or have no preference because it’s very offputting to come to celebrate an occasion and come to find out the ambiance you wanted is not what you had originally planned for the day. Besides that experience, the food was really good, the drinks and desserts were amazing, and the live music we fortunately got to experience was great! I wish nothing but the best for this restaurant but please do be considerate of your patrons that are traveling from afar for this experience, and also don’t be rude to the guests about the sitting situation.
My experience at Baar Baar was astonishing. This is definitely one of the best Indian restaurants in NY. I am a hard critic of food but the food at Baar is mouthwatering. Every dish is unlike the other while following the traditional Indian cuisine flavors. The drinks are some of the best that I have ever had. All of the cocktails that I tried were balanced perfectly and the wines were also paired very well with the meal. The service was also very good. My only critique is that the saffron rice needs to be prepared differently. It is only a side dish which can be ordered with an entree, but it needs a little more love. The water that they use to either clean or boil the rice seeps into the rice and gives it a metal taste. It also needs to be seasoned better. I know the chef was probably trying to keep the rice simple to be a base for all of the entrees and their wonderful spices, but it still needs to be fluffy with a little seasoning. I suggest salt and a few tablespoons of unsalted butter to the water before boiling the rice. Something simple but makes a worlds difference because the metal tasting bland rice kind of took away from the entree. We ordered the branzino which was cooked and seasoned perfectly. My only suggestion is to have the waiters add the lemon after they add the sauce on top when serving. When we added the splash of lemon, it brought all of the wonderful flavors together very well and took out that extra fishiness. I believe that it is needed with that dish and shouldnt be served as a suggestion. Anyways, I am 100% returning with all of my family and friends! Great experience, and great food!
The hits are *great*, and the misses - aggresively *meh*.(BTW, this isnt your typical US/Indian resto - its more of a whats trendy in the UK/India these days kinda place)Anyow, the combination of Great and Meh pretty much sums it up. Take the cocktails for example - the good ones are *great* (the one with ghee-washed amrut, the margarita thing), and the others are definitely, aggresively, *meh* (the lassi, the tea thing). Its the same with the food too. The duck/foie-gras haleem, the lamb ribs, and the lamb keema - *stellar*. The kulchas and the amul/chicken, not so much.So yeah, it really really depends on what you get...
The staff was soooo disrespectful for a large party of 10people. MEHEK, the hostess in the glasses was so incredibly rude and told us we were “a lot” and to “hang tight” when all we asked was to be seated. They want to blame their disorganization and chaos and unprofessionalism on customers. Would never recommend this place to anyone. Overpriced and a waste of time.
The trendiest Indian restaurant in the world. This place is totally underrated. It took me like four visits until I realized this was actually an Indian restaurant. The bar is beautiful. Tons of space and assorted seating. Great vibes. The food is unique, yet not too heavy or creamy. I suggest an assortment of plates combined with some hard whiskey to melt it all down. The scene here is pretty upbeat. When the bar gets going, theres no place like it. During the day, its actually a shared workspace which is super interesting.Come visit. Youll love it. Especially if you like Indian things.
Really dissapointed with the service and quality of the food.Food - The dishes were grossly undercooked and the oil used for dishes (Malai kofta and khel Fritters) had a pungent smell thats usually associated with repeated use.Service - The service was not upto the standard as basic items like Raitha were not provided with pairing food and not even upon request which is quite disrespectful. As a large group no one enjoyed the food in the end and it was def not worth the experience for the price they charge as the quality was sub standard to a low end restaurant.Avoid the dissapointment!!!!
My friend and I went here for dinner there last night for restaurant week. Oh! It was so great! The food is amazing, the service was awesome, and just the atmosphere with the music and arts on the wall.. so good. It was like a treat for all the senses lol. There was a little bit of a wait because of the crowd so they acknowledged it and send us extra appetizers without us even asking anything. We thought our entrees had come out with the appetizers at first- until the server clarified that the chef had sent out free food for the inconvenience. The music is nostalgic and feels like home with great Indian beats. It was such a wonderful experience. I’m so glad we went. Also, it offers a great restaurant week pricing for a 3-course meal. Cherry on top.
This place was so noisy!! We couldnt have a normal conversation and had to repeat any questions to our serving staff.Food was good - its a big plate and yummy(only reason why Im giving any stars)Their drinks were awful! I dont think there was ANY alcohol in our cocktails.Service was quick and good but one of the servers kept knocking into the back of my seat while attending other tables (we were in one of the corner tables inside)I had big expectations given the reviews but was def disappointed.
One of the worst dining experiences Ive ever had... my party of two reserved an indoor table and when we arrived, we were told that our table would be ready soon. After waiting 15 mins, the hostess walked us around the inside of the restaurant and told us there were no open seats and we could choose between the patio or outdoor seating despite the fact that we had RESERVED an INDOOR table. Within two minutes of us sitting down the hostess came back again to our table and asked if she could move one of the table and chairs we were seated at to sit another party literally two feet away from us. Its honestly like they are making up their seating arrangements on the fly, even for those people with reservations, not just walk-ins. Then after we had ordered our drinks and were ready to order food we were forced to get a large plate per person (which is $40 and should barely be considered a large plate because of the relatively small proportion size). No where on their website or menu was this rule mentioned - its almost like they want to trick you into spending more money here. I truly wouldnt have mind paying for the large plate + drinks if we got a chance to enjoy the indoor ambience (their only selling point I guess) and had received better service. We tried to show consideration for when we had to sit outdoors and then the table we were sitting was used to seat others, but they really showed no consideration for us, especially when we were uncomfortable with getting one large plate each. Finally, the waitress added gratuity on to our bill. Both the waitress and hostess were both pretty rude and constantly demanded us to accommodate to their ridiculous rules rather than providing us a satisfactory experience. Food was also average... nothing special. Only plus was the drinks I guess. So if youre coming here, just get a drink or two and enjoy the ambience indoors. Dont get food, its a total rip-off. I have no idea who or how they are running this business. I rarely ever give bad reviews, but never have I felt more compelled to rate an experience so poorly. Please consider changing your management or business philosophy to be more customer service oriented because I truly do want to see this place succeed, but at this point, I highly discourage others from coming here.
I was with a group of friends and we were about 8 people. We ordered almost everything on the menu. Nothing except the keema pav tasted good. Everything looks good but doesn’t taste great. The flavours weren’t even close to authentic Indian food that we have in India. We went for brunch and the meal was highly disappointing. Only good thing was the ambience and the drinks. Not worth the price at all.
I heard so much about this restaurant and reservations are also highly recommended . We went our friend who really enjoys eating lamb, so we did have lamb as an appetizer and in our main course . Bur besides that we also had dahi puri for our appetizer. puri was not crunchy as it should be. Lamb chops were fine. But nihari had too much fatty sinews! Fish sauce was delicious but fish was slightly dry. Naans and the service were great. but you cant pay $$$$ for great naan and great service!
Went to baar baar for dinner tonight! Amazing food, everything we ordered was super good, great presentation as well. Our server sohail was very attentive, took care of our table really well. Overall amazing experience. We ordered the saffron flan for dessert, wasnt that great as we imagined but overall great experience!
Food and drinks were delicious. Was part of a large party (18) and the waiters were disorganized and took very long time taking orders and bringing out food. Person who made reservations was first offered prix fixe menu, but then restaurant said they will take orders day before the dinner, then when she called in orders they told her that the orders were too complicated (after she spent a ton of time on this) and that they would just take orders at the restaurant. They definitely need a better system for large parties.
I went to Baar Baar for an event and it was wonderful! It was a beautiful venue and the food was excellent. The servers were also very nice and efficient. I really appreciated the small details from the plates to how the food was presented like the dahi puri canapés. I liked the buffet that was set up for us and the use of induction stoves to keep the food hot was nice. I really liked the classic butter chicken and paneer dishes. I will definitely be coming back and recommend booking Baar Baar for events!
My husband and I, ate their tonight. By the time we reached home .. my husband started feeling stomach ache and felt uneasy. Also the food did not feel fresh and the roti we ordered was cold first time and we asked them to replace it.The price is not at all worth for the portions and food taste is very average. Also, the thing that surprised me - we had to pay for chutney!! (Which I hope to get it with my appetizer)Overall, the experience did not meet our expectations.
Fun and authentic cultural vibes matched with some of the most delicious brunch food I’ve ever had. Talk about not sticking with the expected, it’s a complete Indian twist on the generic brunch menu. Explosive flavors across some of the items we had, the shrimp and grits, the lamb hash, even the avocado toast was delicious! The cocktails were also great! Want a totally different culinary experience for brunch? Go here. Disclaimer: if you want to hear your company conversation at the table, sit outside, it’s really loud inside!
You pay for the ambiance and service for sure, it was a stunning restaurant but the food was average. We received our chicken ghee roast small plate within 3 minutes from the time we placed our order. Which gave us a signal that the food is not freshly made. I tried a non alcoholic drink gulabi which was good. We ordered gongura chicken and shrimp curry, while the curry flavors were all there the portion size for the chicken felt a little too small considering it to be a “large plate”, the shrimp curry had again great flavor but it felt a little rubbery. For the price you pay, I would assume the shrimp to melt in my mouth, that clearly didn’t happen. Overall this was an average experience for us. We would recommend everyone to visit this place once for the ambiance and the service but as far as food is concerned it could have been better.

2022-01-28Came here for restaurant week and this place did not disappoint. The butter chicken was amazing but I think for how much it costs normally, I wouldn’t get it unless I went to restaurant week here again. The pork belly and jack fruit were also so good and the cocktails were amazing. The avocado chickpea was fine but forgettable and the cauliflower was amazing but very small portion. We did the wine pairing which was fun but pretty small portions of wine for $25 :/.

2022-02-08An exquisite dining experience. The ambience- interior design, decor is all around very pleasant. The food & drinks are delicious and beautifully presented and the service impeccable! Every single dish we tried was amazing, very flavorful and perfectly balanced. Cocktails also were scrumptious (Especially Jupiter Paloma). Easy the best Indian restaurant in NY! I would definitely recommend for a special occasion, for a romantic event or a big group.

2022-02-20Excellent food and vibe of the place. It had live bollywood music and the band was amazing. The food that we ordered was really good. recommendations include Pani Puri, keema pav, Bombay sandwich and Amritsari Kulcha. The drinks menu wasnt that exciting though and the margarita ok. Will definitely recommend going to this place for an amazing experience and tasty Indian food.

2022-06-09Very similar to the menu in Rooh at Palo Alto.. some the menu items like jackfruit keema and cauliflower 65 were great .. paaner chili and chicken cutlet were average .. cocktails that our group had - kairi Mule, mango margarita were just Ok. Kerala old fashioned didnt smell or taste of the ingredient mentioned and was just a old fashioned - half glass full. The cold toddy was the best drink of the night. Mushroom Biryaani was really good. Paneer was average and mango tart was refreshing and light. Service was a little slow while we were sitting outside. Overall a good ambience with the hustle bustle of 1st Street.

2022-01-17Both drinks and food were delicious. We did the tasting menu and between the 6 of us we covered a whole variety of dishes- from the lamb kheema to the paneer pinwheel, and every dish was so unique and tasty. Prior reservations highly recommended.

2021-11-22This place is great. Reasonably priced, nice ambience, food was tasty and well-seasoned while not being overpowering, and service was quick. Would definitely recommend. We ordered a bunch of plates and shared them - most came with 4 portions so were easily dividable. I’d come back!

2022-02-07Trying out the 2022 Restaurant Week menu, I really enjoyed the dinner here - not only good for the food but the attentive service! For both of the appetizers that my friend and I ordered were full of combinations of spices and flavors. Tuna Bhel Tostada (avocado, radish, onion, cilantro, tagarashi) - crispy tostada with tuna tartare; Tandoor smoked pork belly (Khatta-Mitha kohlrabi achar, pickled carrots) - slightly spicy, the slow cooked pork belly was so tender and not too fatty. As for our entrees, classic Baar Baar butter chicken (red pepper makhani, fenugreek) was not a surprise that it was buttery and tasted so great; Achari salmon (millet khichdi, coriander oil) - millet khichdi seasoned with various spices, though salmon fillet was not impressiveGarlic/cheese naan - somehow those breads tasted like soft pizzas, I prefer the cheese one; saffron riceLast but not least, my favorite dessert part. Mango & chili sorbet with mango jelly, and lime salt - a bit too spicy yet an interesting combination of ingredients; Ragi brownie, chai chocolate ganache, and vanilla bean ice cream - I was so into the warm, creamy, and rich ganache. Nothing would go wrong with brownie and vanilla ice cream!

2022-03-21Yummy food but really bad service. The waiter never checked on us. Waited an hour for our food. They brought mine out but not my friends. Waited literally 30 min for my friends order and in that time no one came to check on us, waiter avoided us. I had to walk up to the hostess counter. Dessert was good - the carrot cake with kulfi type ice cream. It was sticky like condensed milk.Main course was a little spicy for me and I asked for it mild.

2022-02-13Bellisimo!Was our 1st time in Indian restaurant. The waiter was educated and helpful. I advised him that it is our 1st time and he recommended us dishes from the menu that we LOVED!The bar is gorgeous!Very clean and nice atmosphere. The prices are expensive but the food worth every penny! The seat was uncomfortable and the table small but it couldnt ruin our dinner! Will definitely visit again to try other dishes.
