Babas has one of the best Pierogies Ive ever tasted- top nocht quality, so tasty, crunchy and creamy, absolutely delicious. Great place, nice location, with the typical neighborhood vibe one can expect from being in Brooklyn. Thank you, Nick, for being so nice with my wife and I during our early lunch. Well be back again as soon as possible!
Never heard of pierogies, which are filled dumplings either cooked in boiling water or fried. We tried both versions in small (5) and large (9) versions filled with spinach and feta, and potatoes - both very tasty. You can add sauces and toppings, the service was good, it’s a light kind of food as an appetizer, I definitely recommend.
This place is a lovely gem! The pierogies are delicious and they offer a nice variety. We have always found the service very pleasant. It actually feels kind of homey in the best way possible. The atmosphere is light and airy. It is definitely small, but we have never had to wait for a table. It is a little pricey and if you order a variety, the bill adds up, but the food is so good and the fare different than the usual offerings, we think it is worth it! Best pierogies!
This place was recommended to us by our friend, and it definitely met our expectations. Pierogis were delicious, and they also offer a nice choice of toppings. I loved the sautéed mushroom topping. This place has a nice cozy atmosphere and professional service. The space is a bit tight but we were here on a quiet night so that was not an issue.
Small eatery featuring a menu of pierogies and other Eastern European delights. Service could not have been more nice, friendly, and welcoming. Love the simple yet modern interior with wooden touches, it makes for an airy ambience. The dishes were quickly prepared, and all were scrumptious and filling! Will definitely come back again for more!
If you’re looking for a wide variety with a specialty in pierogies, this is great place. Amazing selection, all handmade, and cooked to all how you like; boiled or pan fried.Their desert pierogies are delicious as well, the chocolate with their home made think heavy whipped cream is awesome.Probably more traditional places out there, yet variety wins here.
We came here because it was close to Littlefield, and were blown away by how delicious the pierogis were! The service was increidble, attentive and friendly, and everything we ordered was fresh and outstanding. I think the most flavorful of the pierogis were the spinach and feta, and make sure to get the caramelized onions topping because it really adds another dimension to the dish. The nine pierogi option will fill you up!
This place is a gem! We had a fantastic time at Babas today. We had the beet salad, fried jalepano and sauerkraut pierogis, and boiled potato and cheese pierogis. Our favorite ended being the jalepano pierogis, most especially with the carmelized onions and hot sauce on top.Service was friendly and we even got $2 off drinks for happy hour. Will definitely go there again!
If you are in Brooklyn and want a good Slovakian meal, this is the place to go. The perogies were amazing. We tried the feta spinach, potato cheese, jalepeno cheese, sauerkraut, and chocolate! All of them were great. We bought a side of horseradish and carmelized onions to go with everything, they added so much flavor. The beer and cider were great too. Everything is fresh and delicious. We even had to come a second day we liked them so much. Dont be fooled by how small the menu seems. Each perogie is very different and has its own unique flavor. I wish I could go back and try all the perogies they had, but itll have to wait till next time Im in New York!
These are some seriously delicious perogies with decent beer and excellent service! It is a bit pricey, though, but worth the experience. A couple friends insisted on taking me here and I did not regret it at all. The fried bacon cheddar ones were my favorite, with the original boiled potato ones at a very close second. Split a few varieties with your friends and dont skip the dessert. Let us know what your favorites are!
Small, cozy spot for some aurhentic Polish food with a modern twist. The pork kielbasa with mustard, sauerkraut, and fresh horseradish made for a small tasty plate. Has tables as well as a bar to eat at. Has a few beers on tap. The waitress was pleasant, professional, and warm.
Polish food, but not Polish feeling. The sausage, sauerkraut, and pierogi were very clean, almost healthy. Generally, I consider that a good thing. However, I lived years in Poland and I was craving the comfort of Polish fast food, and from that perspective I wasnt satisfied.
Came here on a whim while waiting for a show and oh my goodness, best idea ever. This brightly lit and cozy store served me the perfect rainy day meal. Golden and crispy outside, soft and pillowy inside, topped with sweet sweet onions. The lady taking our orders was also very sweet and helpful. “Five is a snack, nine is a meal. I prefer boiled but the owner and customers mostly prefer fried.” And yes, fried was better but boiled grew on me.I don’t live in the same borough as this wonderful place but I’m willing to suffer the stupid MTA to come back for more. Also, generous happy hour from noon? to six.
The pierogies were both nice. Bryndza (a dry Slovakian cheese which taste resembles parmesan) & potato pierogies were tasty. This was also the first time I ever tried dessert pierogies, in this case chocolate. This is great destination for dining and takeout or if one is passing by from the nearby microbreweries.
Best costumer service in Brooklyn!!!!!! so farVery great pierogies, baked or fried.Beets are yummy!!Vegan options!!!The pierogies blueberry dessert is okay.Personally I prefer the potatoes. What a delicious, family oriented, cozy place!Im going back.Good Prices.Im excited for this place!Enjoy!
I was so excited upon finding this spot because Id been craving Polish food for some time. I walked 25 minutes to get there because I was in the area. But I wish I wouldve read the lower rated reviews prior to placing an order. No clue how its so highly rated (as others have mentioned). Wouldve likely saved myself 50 bucks had I did some reading before letting my excitement take over.I do feel badly rating so poorly but the one star is seemingly appropriate for the food quality and pricing.I dont think Ive ever had pierogies this bad, anywhere. The fried traditional ones were incredibly dry and all you could taste was straight potato. Thankful I purchased a side of sour cream because they seriously needed it. Forced myself to eat half of them so not to waste the money. The sauerkraut pierogies tasted quite awful extremely peppery and like someone else mentioned tasted as if it was out of a jar. I forced myself to finish one of the 5, absolutely couldnt eat any more of these.Tried handing them off to coworkers so not to waste them but they took a bite of theirs and eventually decided to throw theirs out.One of the people mentioned frozen pierogies tasting better and lol, unfortunately it is so true!!The kiełbasa was unlike any kiełbasa Ive eaten from these types of cuisines. It was the only thing that tasted fairly good out of my entire order. But it was SO much smaller than I was anticipating and than Id gotten at pretty much all other Polish or Slavic restaurants.Place is cute! But is seriously over priced. This is the most Id ever spent on pierogies and theyre the worst ones Ive had 😔.
An incredible throwback to the Polish dish that ran Brooklyn decades and decades ago. Wonderful staff and INCREDIBLE FOOD. Potato and cheese pierogies were like a grandma’s recipe. I tried the spinach and feta and it tasted like homemade spanakopita. They do everything wonderfully- get the salads too they do not disappoint. 11/10 go there now!
I went with friends and got potato and cheese, spinach and feta, Mac and cheese, jalapeño, and then the blueberry dessert pierogies and the apple ones. Both boiled and fried were awesome and I recommend a mix. The potato and cheese and blueberry were the stars. Spinach and feta and the jalapeño didnt do it for me as much. That said, everything was quite tasty and this is a great spot to hit up when youre tired of Mrs Ts and you want the real deal.
I stopped in for the first time today. I was undecided of what to try so Nick recommended his favorite, which were the jalapeño & cheddar pierogies. I also tried the popular bacon & cheddar ones, finished up with the absolutely amazing dessert blueberry pierogies served with sweet cream. Everything was delicious and I will most definitely be back soon.
Really amazing place, its small and perfect. The guy working here is a real gentleman, and the service was A+. The Pierogies were to die for, the mac n cheese and spinach n feta were unbelievable, the texture and flavor was just perfect. Both the dessert Pierogies were delicious too. Can’t forget the amazing 80’s playlist, really just a great experience and they nailed every aspect of the food service industry.
Beautiful small spot for wholesome and handmade Slovakian cuisine. Service is lovely and the food is marvelous. Getting into my own familys history, its really fulfilling to have some of the food they may have enjoyed and to put names to the smells I have very distant memories of.A considerate, local, and delicious business run with lots of love
A HIDDEN GEM. I discovered this place while scrolling aimlessly on Google maps and omg I’m so glad I did! Stopped in tonight for a post-work snack and I’m so impressed. Very friendly service, the space is super cute, and my order was prepared quickly. The vegan pierogis are incredible and remind me so much of the ones my mom made when I was growing up. 11/10 will definitely be back!Wish I had a photo to share but we inhaled them too quickly.
I love Babas. Lots of vegetarian pierogi options. I know it sounds a bit strange, but get the mac and cheese pierogies pan fried. The boiled jalapeno and the boiled potato and cheese are also delicious. Caramelized onions are a must for topping.Babas has a small outdoor seating area in front. Take out was prompt and efficient. Hope to stop by again soon.
Baba’s Pierogi’s are melt-in-your-mouth delicious. We ate outside tonight and enjoyed the potato pierogis, the Octoberfest special goulash and a fresh golden beet salad. Plus two excellent Czech beers on tap. The waiter was so friendly and the service was stellar, even during a pandemic when most places are short staffed. They have so many different pierogis options, it was hard to choose. Can’t wait to go back and try the others. Highly recommend!
Five stars because the food was awesome and the staff was nice. However, there were a few mistakes with our order. The main issue being that we received one batch of fried pirogi when we had asked for boiled. Not a big deal since the fried were delicious but a bit heavier than we wanted. We took some leftovers home and they did not package the toppings that were remaining. This makes me sad because the toppings were very delicious but also cost extra. Just hate to see anything wasted. Nothing huge but some room for improvement considering the price.
This is by far the best pierogies Ive had in the US. I got some for an event, and we got one tray each of potato and cheese, spinach and feta, and chocolate. The chocolate came with whipped cream which was awesome, and I really enjoyed the potato and cheese. I like these pierogies because the skin is chewy and the inside is creamy, and its really tasty. The chocolate one was fried, and since we got it delivered, the skin unfortunately was hard by the time we got it; Id imagine its much better if I had it at the restaurant itself. The chocolate one wasnt too sweet either which I appreciated. The potato and cheese was really creamy inside, and it was super tasty, a crowd favorite. The spinach and feta flavor was quite strong, but the balance between the spinach and feta was good. These three trays along with delivery was $130, and each tray had 25 pierogies. Price is a bit high, but quality was good; I would definitely consider them again for catering!
Delicious pierogis and lovely environment. Just a few tiny details that would have made it a perfect experience: we ordered one batch of pierogis pan fried and the other boiled, and both came as pan fried. We also ordered toppings for both (which cost extra and were as delicious as the pierogis), but when we took our leftovers to go we realized later that they didn’t get put in the leftovers box :( Despite these little things I would still return for the sauerkraut pierogis and the homemade apple sauce :)
I wish I lived closer so I could go more often! I had Baba’s for the first time about a year ago and they blew me away. I started ordering regularly when they would do cross borough delivery to Manhattan when covid began to impact restaurants. When outdoor dining became easier this summer/fall, I was able to go to the restaurant for the first time and the food, service, and staff were all incredible. They even remembered my name from delivery and Instagram. If you like pierogies, you will LOVE Baba’s.
Very good pierogies! I had a carrot salad with apple, cinnamon and walnuts to start - a nice starter and good for sharing. I followed that with the pan fried potato pierogies with sauerkraut on top. Everything was simple but delicious and filling. The location is small, but it wasnt busy when I went, and we were seated right away. I definitely recommend going here to warm you up on a cold winter day.
Discovered this place when my nephew was at camp down the street. These pierogies were so delicious, we took another order home with us. We had the bacon and cheese with extra bacon and the cheese and potato. Every dumpling tasted like more. They were also very filling, so while we ordered 9 of each, we only ended up eating half. Really delicious, and a very bright, pleasant atmosphere. A winner with the whole family.
From vegan to carniterrean and all points in between! After a lovely cocktail just down the street at Lucky Luceys (more on them another time), pierogies and kraut and beets (And okay yes, a killer sausage) were just what the doctor ordered after a rousing day of vintage shopping and hiking through Gowanus.Babas pierogies are defined by a yielding and nicely delicate dough. After trying them both boiled and pan-fried, the fried variation was far and away our preference due to the variety of textures and excellent browning. While every flavor was good, the Spinach and Fetas faint garlicky bite really stood out. Because pierogies are ordered in batches of 5 or 9, unless youre bringing a group it will take several trips to try them all.Note: f youre looking to seat a large group, the dining room is quite intimate so you may want to call ahead or be prepared to wait awhile. The kielbasy is awesome. If you partake in meat, its a wonderful plate.A well curated selection of draft beers and wines by the glass make for a sharp accompaniment with generous pours to boot. The Czechvar lager is a wonderful option along with rotating seasonal beers and wines (Get the Gruner Veltliner ;-)For those so inclined there is a seperate and nicely laid out vegan menu. The staff will go above and beyond to accommodate dietary restrictions as much as possible.
Amazing food. Pierogies were made fresh, the owners are a joy to talk to, super nice, and they had an excellent beer selection (including great Czech beers!). Would highly recommend the cheese and potato boiled pierogies with sour kraut. Definitely will return and would recommend this place to anyone.
Babas was absolutely delicious. They had some of the best pierogies I have ever had in my life and that is saying a lot for a Pole. The Mac and Cheese ones were delicious and are worth the trip in itself. The applesauce was disgusting and I definitely would not recommend it.
Delicious! What a wonderful place to bring a rambuncous 6 year old and my 93 year old grandmother! We were helped (patiently!) Into the restaurant. Lunch was served quickly, we had sauerkraut, farmers cheese, potato and Mac ncheese along with beet salad and cucumber salad. We added bacon and carmelized onion. The bacon was amazing! I wasnt thrilled with the onions, but everything else was delicious. This is one of the few places that prides itself on a thinner dough, allowing us to savor the stuffings.
The pierogies were delicious!! The spinach + feta and jalapeño were standouts. Admittedly we originally chose spinach + feta to be healthy and were pleasantly surprised. Dont miss Babas iced tea - its really good and perfectly balanced sweet, tart and fresh. The owner clearly cares and was a delight, offering advice and checking in. Support this charming small business and have a fantastic meal!
The location was stunning. The decor is perfect. It has a warm and homey feel to it. The service was terrific as well A+. And finally the food was phonominal. Went with the family and had a taste of all different types of pirogies and have to say they were all great. Just like grandma used to make. They have some beer on tap as well as bottled and some wine as well. Pricewise very reasonable especially with all yhe work that goes into the food. Overall terrific place.
The best pierogie, fight me! Skip the mac and cheese ones, they dont work. Stick to potato and cheese. Bacon cheddar, and jalapeno are also goods. Dont forget the Helen dip, its a must! Other food items like schnitzel bites and sloppy kielbasa are quite good. Lastly, dont forget dessert! I recommend the blueberry pierogie ;)
I was walking and saw Babas. I am Polish and was brought up with pierogies as part of my family meal. these did not disappoint! The cheese pierogies are made with farmer cheese.... just like Mama used to make! I was hoping to try the blueberry but was just too full. Will definitely be returning though! The atmosphere is cozy and the service was great! Loved the cucumber salad too!
It was so good! I had the Mac and cheese pierogies and it was amazing! There wasnt much of a wait time and is and was very delicious! We also got the crunchy chocolate pierogies which sounds weird, but was also amazing with their homemade whip cream. Would come here again in a blink!
My coworker learned to make pierogies while he studied abroad in Russia. Hes brought some in for me to try before, and as a wonderful cook, he makes delicious pierogies. Ive found his rival now -- from Babas Pierogies in Brooklyn. I absolutely loved the mac and cheese pierogies and the jalapeno and cheese pierogies that I ordered. I got five of each and thought the price was right for the amount of food I got. Yes, the prices are a little high, but you get plenty of food for what youre paying for so I have no complaints. The pierogies filled me up quickly. Now, Babas isnt the most authentic Russian eatery that youll go to. I dont think Russians in Russia are downing mac and cheese pierogies. But for a place like NYC thats all about fusion food, I loved the creative combinations that Baba came up with. They managed to turn some of my favorite American foods into delicious pierogie form. Also, I had the nicest server! She was very nice about recommending her favorites to me (I love when servers do that).
I just HAD to write this review. My partner and I just moved to Park Slope from East Village where we ate pierogis with some regularity. We decided to try Babas because of its great prices, reviews, and a menu with some flexibility. We ordered the boiled potato and farmers cheese pierogis topped with mushrooms with sourcream and chive dip and we got kielbasy with homemade saurkraut and fresh horseradish and the cucumber salad. We took our first bites, made eye contact, and ate the rest of the meal in silence because we were engulfed in how delicious everything was!! No joke. Best pierogis Ive ever had, the mustard with the kielbasy was perfect... And the service was great. The owner took our order and told us about babas tea which his grandmother used to make for them, and you can truly feel that this is a family affair. Get that tea.. Its iced rosehip, mint and hibiscus.. Incredible.I really cant say enough good things and I cannot wait to go back. I am so excited that its only two blocks away. Now Im hungry. See you soon, Babas.
Love PIEROGIES!!!!! The staff here are so knowledgeable and friendly, you will not feel bad for asking about the history or anything about the menu. He graciously offers the history of the restaurant and that is what really warms my heart. Not only the food was delicious, it was such a delightful experience to dine in the clean, modern, homey dining area. The menu and the little flags as labels were so cute with their own branding font and logos. My favorite was the jalapeno pierogies + then the second fav was the bacon cheddar. Yum!!! I would definitely come back to eat more again! Dont be too fooled by the size of these little suckers, they can fill you up real quick.
Really enjoyed this place. We actually trekked out here in a field trip (we came from uptown Manhattan), bc we heard how good they were. Was not disappointed in the taste! We got about4 different types. Was worth the trip. If I remember correctly we had to pay extra for onions and sour cream, that was a little disappointing as you kind of expect that to go with a pierogie. Definitely will be making the trip into Brooklyn for this again!
Quaint modern 20 seat shop serving hand made by the order Eastern European style Pierogies. Despite a slightly inconsistent sear on the different Pierogies I trimming d, all where absolutely wonderful. The dough is light and has a nice chew. The base potato filling filling is perfectly seasoned and serves as the perfect vessel for the different combinations. There is plenty of bacon and cheddar in this variation without one over powering the other, each flavor dancing gracefully across your taste buds in unison with its partner. The sautéd onions are done to a light brown (personally I think they could use another 5 minutes in the pan) and flavorful and sweet while maintaining there texture and juiciness. If you want to add a non-pierogi protein to your order I recommend the Schnitzel Bites. These bites are little balls of ground sautéd pork perfectly seasoned with a slight peppery bite which is complimented with a warm sweet macaroni salad. Another option is a perfectly grilled kielbasa sausage. As for dessert, you need to end the meal with an order of the blueberry and the chocolate filled fried pierogies.
The absolute best pierogies Ive ever had in my life! This is a new regular spot for me. We went in and got the sauerkraut pierogies and the jalapeño pierogies and were so blown away that we ordered a second time (spinach and feta, and potato and farmers cheese)! Again, blown away. We had just enough room for the chocolate and hazelnut dessert pierogies served with homemade whipped cream, and everything was so delicious that if my stomach didnt have a maximum capacity Id still be there ordering food. The service was wonderful, genuinely kind people working the register and in the kitchen. Everything tasted exquisitely fresh and the pierogies were handmade to order! We had a lovely chat with the chef and felt at home and welcomed. This place is a gem, dont miss out!
This place is wonderful. The pierogies are truly delicious (and, impressively, made to order). At the risk of cliché, the cheese and potato pierogies are just how my grandpa made them. They have all of the classic flavor combinations (and offer them either pan fried or boiled) and a lot of new iterations as well. The caramelized onions are likewise divine. The staff has always been very pleasant, the restaurant is cozy without feeling cramped (and while Ive dined when the restaurant was full, it has never felt hectic). They sell Coke by the glass bottle and they accept credit card. Whats not to love?
The cheese and potato pierogies were so delicious and cooked to perfection. Helenas grandmas dough has such a wonderful texture The pan fried mac and cheese pierogies with sour creme were heavenly. I tasted the chicken soup and it was superb. Great food, lovely people, wonderful vibe. Just a great choice for comfort food. Thank you.
Great food. Not surprisingly, pierogi is the main feature, though there are some other options. Various traditional (such as potato or potato and farmers cheese) and non traditional (such as bacon) styles are available either boiled or fried. The place is clean and nice looking, and the staff was friendly and welcoming.Highly recommended. And if you love pierogi, definitely not to be missed.
Ok, I hadnt expected much out of this restaurant with a focus on Pierogies, but boy was I wrong. And Surprised! The configuration choices were many, and the ability to have them boiled or fried was perfect. We also had the chicken soup on this cold night (great choice!) as well as the kielbasa. THAT was an excellent choice, tasty and well cooked, it was accented nicely by the sauerkraut it was served with. Combined with a tankard of Czech beer (described perfectly as like Heineken but without the aftertaste) made for a terrific evening out. Thanks!
I was born in Ukraine and so grew up eating pierogies. When I heard about this place I got pretty excited and decided to go check it out with my parents and I was not disappointed. The staff is super friendly and this is very clearly a labor of love. The restaurant is small but bright and open. We tried the sauerkraut boiled w/ onions, potato and cheese pan fried w/ onions and the jalapeno boiled topped with bacon bits. We also got kielbasy sliders and then blueberry pierogi for dessert. All of the pierogies were delicious - although your favorite will depend a lot on whether you like them more boiled of fried. We were disappointed in the onions because we usually chop them up into little squares and fry them to a crisp to be a topping - here it seems they were boiled in strands and Id tell you to pass on them. The Jalapeno pierogi are absolutely inspired - they had a nice kick without being overwhelming and topping them with bacon brought them to a whole new level. The fattiness of the pork and the kick of the peppers worked really well together. Im glad to see them experimenting with new fillings and pushing the pierogi forward as a dish. If youve never had pierogies or your baba made them every week you should come out here and try some - youll be glad you did!
The food was decent, interesting combinations but expensive for what it is.I thought it was a bit funny that the guy working there kept specifically asking the white customers if they grew up eating pierogies. He also made very derogatory comments about Chinatowns.Be careful what you order too. I placed an order but didnt specify and assumed they knew it was 9. They ended up giving me the smaller portion for some reason. When I tried to fix it, they refused saying the order already went through, making it seem like it was my fault. They told me customers always change their mind, as if I was tricking them or something, so odd.Probably wouldnt go back just because 55 dollars for some dumplings is a lot!You cant mix and match too, fyi.
Had the mac n cheese and bacon potato ones. Mac n cheese are amazing! Got seated right away at 9:30pm on a weekday. Delicious! Waiter was a little weird about repeating the kitchen is closing at 10pm and they were out of the jalapeño, but otherwise perfect experience.
One of my new favorite spots downtown! Ive had lots of authentic Russian and Ukrainian pierogies - from Brighton Beach restaurants, to my Grandmas cooking. These pierogies are made with a modern twist and a lot of traditional skill. I like the small menu - no frills, just delicious perogies. They taste great. I usually go for the boiled potato perogies with fried onions (the classic option), but also recommend the fried mac-and-cheese perogies for something more modern.Babas Pierogies: comfort food done right. Do yourself a favor and check them out!
Cute spot where you can tell they put a lot of care and effort into making the food. They have savory and dessert pierogies as well as a few other small bites but my personal favorites were from the savory menu served fried. Wish the location was in a more convenient and busier part of the neighborhood but worth trying at least once.
Everything about this place is great! The sleek wood design, the friendly helpful servers and fast delicious food make it a great stop in the Gowanus area of Brooklyn. I shared the fried mac and cheese pierogies with a friend and within a few minutes we were both contemplating ordering more.HIghly Recommend!
Pierogies are poor. I dont know why is this place so higly rated. For someone who is from Polish ethnicity, I could say that frozen pierogies that you could get grom European stores are better. Dough was alright. Fillings horrible. Potato and cheese. You just taste potato. Filling is bad. For the saurkraut ones. Plain cabbage from a jar. These should be slightly sour Not a good expierence. Hoped to be like wow considering this place serves only pierogies.
Incredible pierogies!! Most well know for their pierogies that range from traditional sauerkraut and potato to more modern Mac&cheese or bacon cheddar. There are other items like kielbasa and ham sandwiches. Everything is excellent. Traditional beer options. Dont miss the blueberry dessert pierogies. Everything is home made and the entire vibe is that of a modern grandmas living room. I grew up with polish style pierogies but these are a very close match to my family recipe. Enjoy!
5 potato and cheese fried pierogies for $8.50. A good snack, but they are so good, I would next time pay for $2.50 more for 4!!! more.Delicious pillows of dough with a mild cheese and creamy potato inside. A healthy side of sour cream adds more tart and dairy complexity to the dish. Fried without being greasy, nor without much of a crust, but just a bit of caramelization going. When ordering, you will notice someone making them by hand in the back.Service was unreal, as despite ordering from the counter, the gentleman still offered water and table service.
They make the pierogies to order -- Literally! They are the freshest pierogies Ive ever had and they are delicious! The dough is light and tender. They have all sorts of fillings both sweet and savory. I get them with sour cream, caramelized onions, and their homemade applesauce and you should too. They are also the nicest people who own and run Babas!YUMOLA!
Best pierogis. Home made feel, and excellent service every time we come. Lots of variety of choices, with vegan/vegetarion options. We live in Rhode Island, and dream about these pierogis when we are at home. Worth the trip every time and HONESTLY my favorite restaurant ever.
~ Specializes in pierogies with classic, and non traditional fillings.~ My favorite one is the Pan Fried Jalapeño.~ Counter service.~ Ample amount of Seating.~ Clean and modern look.~ Bathroom available.~ No Wi-Fi.~ It wasnt hard for me to find parking.I reckon slavic people arent as bad as they are portrayed in the movies, nor the food as boring as its reputation would suggest.Proof:Baba pierogis! from their friendly and helpful service, to their version of the National dish in many slavic countries; pierogies! I was impressed. Before trying to explain my blissful bite here, a quick note first. For me, a dish made to perfection is the hardest to describe. It is one of my withdrawal symptoms of an Euphoric Experience in a restaurant. So when I took the time later that day to write a review, I was obviously still under the influence, so bare with me, as Im trying my best here...From a peasant food in the olden times to a national dish in Poland, slovakia, & Ukraine, the pierogi made its way through thick and thin only to end up in a freezer near you. Not bad for its legacy one might say! Hey, it even has a race named after it, The Great Pierogi Mascot Race. Not to mention a monument in Alberta, Canada. But being such a popular dish doesnt really mean its easy to find a juicy - freshly made on the spot- Pierogi in the city. So thats why Baba pierogies is a game changer! Armed With their secret babas (grandmother)recipe, they churn out one of the best pierogis Ive ever had.The benefits of walking in to an empty restaurant, with an empty stomach was three fold. Not only was the service really fast - it really comes in handy, when you are hangry -. Or the picture snapping of the place, easy and fun. NBut you also have a chance to talk to one of the family members about their Babas recipe, and get some tips on local Eateries.Less than five minutes after ordering my pan fried jalapeño pierogies, the basket came out with nine pieces ($11) a side of bacon bits ($1.25), warm sauerkraut ($1), and Helens dip ($0.50). The combination was just pure joy. It hit all the right spots, Texture taste wise. I was happy that I decided to go with the pan fried over Boiled; that extra crisp added so much to the filling of the potato, cheddar, and jalapeño, that I had an epiphany of sorts when it comes to the latest sophistication of street food around the world. Especially when the fillings of the pierogi worked so well together, when its not even the traditional version of it.But lets not forget the star of the night, the one that worked tirelessly to put all of these flavors under a shining light, and highlight the harmonious flavor profile of the pierogi, the one and only: Helens dip! Although the ingredients of this dip were simple, Sriracha, lime juice, and mayo. It didnt take away my delight of how perfect the dip / condiment was.Pro Tip: You dont have to be Polish to become a regular here___________Ps. I can only wish theyll one day bottle the Helens dip, & sell it on its own. Ill be their first customer.
Eeeeeeeeeee! So Im Polish. I loved them all. Buuuuuuuuuuut I especially loved the Greek-style spanakopita pierogi. My son (14 months) could NOT GET ENOUGH. He smashed the leftovers back in Detroit. Yes.Well pretend the lemonade is good for 5 stars. Its NYC. Who really believes nonalcoholic beverages beyond the milkshakes of the late 2000s are worth the cost?I miss Stand. They had some amazing drinks.
I enjoyed these much more than I expected! They are homemade. Made right in front of you. Very fresh. I got the potatoes and cheese with bacon bits and sour cream dip. The dip complemented the potato pierogies perfectly. I would come back and looking to try spinich&feta and mac&cheese pierogi!
Happen to stumble upon Babas Perogies in Gowanus, Bklyn. ..so I had to try their Kielbasa offerings. Delicious. Grilled, served with side of tasty sauerkraut, tasty sour dole bread and homemade mustard . Need to come back and sample the Sloppy Joe Kielbasa sandwich & other appetizing sandwich offerings on menu. Helena, the owner was extremely generous, charming & warm. She gave me a free Tee as a gift . Great find.
OK my life is ruined since I had the blueberry Pierogies. Theyre the most delicious thing I have ever had in my life and I cannot stop thinking about them! Also the dude who works there is like the nicest person in Brooklyn its so surreal every single person in New York City should go to the shop at least
The best fresh ingredients used for those hand formed pierogies!!! HAND MADE!!! Puffed to the fullness with traditional fillings (potato or blubbery) or modern twist (jalapeños or Nutella). This is true homemade food that you, if you are not lucky to have grandmother that can make it, can still experience without traveling to Eastern Europe like Slovakia, Poland or Ukraine. A must to visit regularly!
Pretty overpriced, but the atmosphere and the service is amazing. The food feels homemade and delicious although it is quite greasy but that’s how it’s supposed to be I suppose. The restaurant itself is nice, and you get treated very well. All in all feels very home-y.
I love the idea of a pierogi shop in Gowanus. Definitely better than a new bank or pharmacy. While I liked the pierogi options, and the overall taste, I think this place needs to work on their kitchen speed. Just took way too long for a few small orders to come out. I know everything is made to order, but 30 minutes for one order of plain cheese pierogies is unacceptable. Ill give this place another try, as I know they just opened.
Pricey ($9.50 for 5, $12 for 9) makes it difficult to try several flavors at once unless you come with a big group which is a shame since they have like ten types but theyre pretty fantastic, possibly the best you can get outside the Russian ones on Brighton Beach. The chocolate dessert ones are out of this world.
Handmade pierogies in traditional flavors like cheese or potato, new takes like mac n cheese and jalapeno (think popper), and even dessert pierogies like crunchy chocolate (filled with a chocolate/hazelnut sauce and crisp rice, served with fresh whipped cream). On top of that you get to choose from a variety of toppings (black forest smoked bacon bits, carmelized onions, sauteed creminis) or dips (horseradish, sour cream and chive, and Helens dip). But the menu doesnt stop at pierogies, there are a variety of sandwiches and salads to choose from as well. Try the sloppy kielbasy,a sloppy joe style sauce covering delicious ground kielbasy served on a brioche bun (from local Baked in Brooklyn) or the 4 kielbasy sliders with bryndza cheese, sauerkraut, and mustard. The 10 seater restaurant is in a storefront that used to be a plastic store. The walls are covered with pieces of palette and the bench and counter are made from old bowling lanes. Opposite the counter is a map of Europe (with Slovakia in green) and Brooklyn, with pictures of the owners family.A young couple both from Brooklyn are the creators, owners, and operators of the fast casual restaurant.Absolutely amazing!
Warm and inviting, this place is a definite come back during the cooler months. Serving both traditional and non pierogies, had the potato & cheese, with bacon bits and sauteed mushrooms, and the jalapeño pierogies. The later was my favorite, but oooh there are so many more to try! Ill be back? You can bet your pierogie I will be!

2022-06-20Amazing variety of pierogis including dessert pierogis. My favorite dessert option was the apple pie pierogi. It’s nice that you can order them fried or boiled. I always buy some frozen ones to make at home. This is my go-to place for pierogis. Highly recommended.

2021-08-03We love ordering take out from Baba’s. It’s my favorite pierogies spot that I’ve had in the city (comparing it to Veselka and pierogi boys). I like their assortment and the different ways you can customize it (fried or boiled with all kinds of toppings and sauces). Favorites are probably the potato and cheese and jalepeno but they are all great!

2022-04-28This little spot in Gowanus is a must. Vegan pierogi options include potato, sauerkraut, or jalapeño. There are a variety of vegan toppings and house made vegan dips. They even have vegan dessert pierogis. I had the vegan potato pierogis, pan-fried, topped with sautéed mushrooms, and a side of vegan horseradish dip- Heaven! I can’t wait to come back!

2021-09-11If you like pierogies, you owe it to yourself to visit Babas Pierogies, a veritable pierogi mecca. Definitely opt for pan-fried over boiled, and make sure to order both a side of caramelized onions and Helens Dip, a tangy sauce. My favorites were the Bacon & Cheddar and the Jalapeño, Cheddar, & Potato. The crunchy chocolate pierogies for dessert were also high on my list.

2022-06-28I love pierogies and this place does it best. Fried or boiled, they have options for every type of pierogi. I had one of the specials and got it boiled with horseradish dip and I loved every bite. The person who took our order was very kind, very attentive, and was able to answer any questions about the food. I highly recommend the potato pancakes!
