Bacaro in other cities:
Cute little spot between Kikis and Forgetmenot that we discovered while waiting in line. Waiters were quick and wore masks the entire time, and menu can be pulled up via QR code on that is taped to the table. We tried the tequila cocktail and bourbon cocktail. We didnt order food but noticed a lot of other tables who were enjoying meals. Great place to grab drinks - the street is lively and always packed in the evening!
Its alright. The drinks are good but theyre also ~$15 so they should be.We ordered the meat and cheese plate, which for +$20 was plated the same way youd plate $6 worth of cold cuts at home. Decent bread, but its bread and it wasnt served warm. For main I had an ink pasta. Which was one dimensional, salty with no balance. Honestly seemed like they just wanted me to get excited over black pasta and there was no reason Id rather eat that than a spaghetti marinara.Lot to be desired especially for the high price tag. If the restaurant wonders why I didnt mention any of this while I was there, the most honest answer is that for around $60 a person for main, shared app and cocktail I should just be able to come and enjoy. It wouldve been too much work to have a retry.I think theres much better Italian food in the city.
Complaint Letter to party planner: I am writing to let you know how disappointed we were with the overall experience at Bacaro last saturday 7/17/2021. This was a repeat of a celebration we had there about 4 years ago. What a difference time makes! While the food was good, the service was poor and unfocused. There really is no excuse for this. It started with your confusing text message saying we had only 90 minutes at the table (incorrect). I found a hostess to confirm that we indeed had more time as a special party. Our table was only partially set (five sets of cutlery instead of seven). The appetizers came out and dropped on a very crowded table with no explanation or warmth. Plates were cleared and as the last main came out (again just dropped on table), we still did not have clean plates to eat. As the food was cooling, plates finally came. Coffee was also served with no spoons, cream and sugar on table.I do not blame Ethan, our server. He was clearly in over his head and doing the best he could. I blame you, Ana, and the management at Bacaro. This special event was know and planned. I expected more from a $1000 meal. You knew the number of people in our party in advance. We were a special event in a private room and expected to be treated as such. It is amazing how these cumulative serving errors and inattention colored the overall experience despite the adequate food. After complaining to Manager, she said they were short on staff and even suggested if I wanted to work there due to that issue, completely inappropriate and rude.I will no longer recommend Bacaro to friends and family and I will certainly no longer book special events here.Extremely disappointed.Santiago
I had a great solo birthday dinner here a few weeks ago. The cave part of the restaurant is really cool & the staff was very nice and kind. Even when I set my bread basket on fire from the small tea candle on the table (wish I was joking), they were still really nice! Try the meatball appetizer!
This is a wonderful spot on the LES for a date night or a group meal. The restaurant is beautiful, with a very unique, rustic vibe. Everything we ate was amazing, in particular the cavatelli duck ragu and the spaghetti con vongole. The apps and desserts were spot on as well. Finally, the service was warm and attentive.A true NYC gem! We will definitely be back!
Interesting decor, small upstairs bar area with a full bar & restaurant downstairs. Vintage doors & hardware with 3 dining areas. Im not sure about handicapped access. The food was delicious. We were there for a wedding and family style service was perfect! Wine and water glasses were continually filled.
Bacaro has the potential to be the go-to Italian restaurant on my list on this side of the city, but the food falls a bit short. Echoing what everyone else has said, the atmosphere is brilliant, whether its for a date night, group event, or whatever else. The downstairs dungeon is fantastic and the bigger tables are in their own little caverns. The service is fine - it just takes some warming up to get the conversation going, otherwise yeah, I can tell some people might feel a little put off. The service is also fairly slow, but honestly in this environment of a restaurant you really shouldnt be rushing anyways. As far as the food goes, I ordered the pork shank for my main. The portion is definitely plentiful, however it wasnt a particularly moriesh dish. It was tender enough but I felt like it wasnt really braised in anything flavorful. There is a lot of fat on the cut which was fine by me (because thats the only thing that gave it flavor) but I can see why others wouldnt be too excited if they arent comfortable eating the fat. The polenta it was served on was fine but there were only two or three little tomatoes - I wish there were 3-4x as many to help cut down the richness of the fat.The appetizers really werent anything to write home about. The mozzarella and tomato dish was very simple and wasnt served with any olive oil or seasoning so youre left to your own devices there. The fried calamari was just spongy batter with hardly any seafood. The meatballs did actually taste quite good but as others have pointed out, they are very, very small and it really isnt worth sharing them. The drink menu is solid and prices for both cocktails and wine are good, although some of the others felt their mixed cocktails on the rocks were just fine, so Id suggest sticking with the wine or spirit-forward onesIll definitely look forward to coming back down the road, trying some pasta and seeing if anything has changed - I just hope they dont get complacent and rely on the ambiance to continue bringing traffic in.
Came to Bacaros for the first time to see the band Jack of Clubs. The restaurant was full and for good reasons. Great menu with nice selection of appetizers. The food was served quickly and it was delicious!!!! The staff was very friendly and attentive. Will definitely go back.
Food was very good, especially the spaghetti nero. The service left something to be desired. Main complaint is that we ordered several dishes to share and instead of coming out as courses everything came to the table at once instead of one at a time. This completely overwhelmed the space on our small table (without clearing the bread and plates!) and made it difficult to share as intended.
Lil hidden Italian gem in the heart of Chinatown. Great atmosphere and really good food. Better as a great wine bar with obdouves so dont expect big portions. Small, quiet, cozy, romantic snd tasty are five best descriptors one should use in an accurate review - enjoy!
Went there with a group of 10. Great place for group dining. Many large tables are available in the cellar. The food is both good and well priced. The fried zucchini blossoms and the stuffed artichoke were delicious. So was the duck ragu pasta. Service was a bit slow.
Not worth the hype or the travel... For starters, our waitress was terrible, she never offered us the specials until we received our starters, her attentiveness... lets put it this way, the bus boy gave us better service then she did which is why we tipped him over the waitress. When you order 2 bottles of wine and dont get to taste the second bottle especially when they arent cheap bottles of wine really showed her experience. She never once asked us how any of our meals were, my pasta with the duck meat was terrible. Pasta was under cooked to the point that it was sticking to my teeth, my friend had the asparagus risotto and it was so bitter we thought it was raw. She took the plates that were still full and didnt ask if anything was wrong. For NYC prices and the lack of service i wont be back.
Very cozy and intimate atmosphere. Food was absolutely excellent. Service was knowledgeable and reasonably attentive, although my party of six was noticeably rushed in order to turn the table. It should be noted however that the manager did, very kindly, offer to buy us a drink at the bar in order to accommodate the next party.
Did my research before going here and could not be happier! They were very busy the night we went so we chose to eat at the bar instead of a table and very glad we did! The bartender was extremely helpful, funny, and engaging. We ate way too much! The soup was amazing and the appetizers were spot on. Definitely not a quiet place, but as long as you know what you want, thats ok. Will definitely be returning the next time we are in NYC!
Ive been going here for what feels like a decade. The food is good, sometimes great, sometimes whatever. But its just such a charming place to spend an evening - I call it the girl magnet. Lately the wine has been getting better and better too. Bacaro is always a good call. Also, if you just have to hang out on Division St., its way better than Kikis - dont listen to the hipsters.
Fantastic old-stone basement environment, solid food, stellar desserts. Service was a bit confused, though. Ordering was strained, oddly and needlessly fragmented -- when a guest is ordering drinks, stay until he/she is done. Overall, very good and with potential to improve with tweaks.
Excellent food and very friendly staff. Upstairs (ground floor) bar and one longvtable, downstairs in the basement is the main room with different tables. As an italian, I must admit: the food was hilarious. Wine very pricey (more than $20 for a glass of Amarone). But would go again, definitely!
Visited with 11 people, service and atmosphere were excellent. The dining area was underground in a converted basement that felt like a trendy catacomb; complete with retro candlelight chandelier. The food was very good; the gnocchi with mushrooms was the highlight for me, the beef was tender and perfectly cooked, the pork shank fell off the bone. The flavors of the protiens were subtle, I would have preferred a flavorful side sauce to complement them. I enjoyed all the deserts that were shared by the table; cinnamon rice pudding (very light and subtle, I liked it, others in my group disliked), tiramisu was fresh and light, chocolate cake was very rich and delicious, panacotta was fresh and light, too.
We kind of stumbled onto Bacaro wandering along Division St looking for something to eat. On a cold night we wanted something comforting and Italian sounded good. The sub terrain dining area feels like a cozy wine vault and softly lit candle light but still bright enough to read the menu. We had an early dinner so the choice of tables was our to chose. It filled up a bit late as dinner time came. Our server was friendly and recited the daily specials. The food came out at a reasonable time not too long and not too quickly. They seem to like their polenta there. I guess nothing says Italian like polenta? We started with the Insalata di Granchio over you guessed it polenta. The crab was delicate and fresh as the salad. The polenta was more of a congealed mush but wasn’t bad. The beet tips sautéed with garlic was a good accompany with the whole wheat pasta in rabbit ragu and the beef shank on top of a creamy polenta! While I don’t remember if the whole wheat pasta was housemade or not but it was cooked al dente. The rabbit ragu was well seasoned. The beef shank was tender and meat fall of the bone. The polenta was nice and creamy. I can’t imagine who many stick of butter went into this but I just won’t think about it.Bacaro was a good dinner in a quite setting. The service was good and out water always filled when needed. It would be a good date dinner night with food that is solidly good.
I hate writing about this place because I dont want it discovered by a glut of tourists and loud NYU students but its without a doubt The Tastiest Restaurants In The Whole East Side (by which I mean, East Village AND Lower East Side). Fortunately this place is off the beaten track. Its hard to find and hard to get to which is fine by me. The plates, especially those I mention here, are absolutely spectacular. A thousand times better than the tourist crap they serve in Little Italy. Lets start with the appertizers: most enjoy the fried zucchini blossoms which are great, but my personal favorite is the Insalata Di Granchio. As for the entree.... Im a diehard fan of the Tagliata Di Manzo. The steak is marinated four days in a special sauce and literally melts in your mouth. Also, get a side order of the Polenta- its delicate; made with a parmigiano & butter-base thats truly delicious. All the pasta dishes are to-die-for. (These are very nuanced dishes and are unlike any pasta dishes youve ever eaten, trust me!) My favorite is the Duck Raga. The Spaghetti Nero is a close second. You cant lose with this place, and Ive been to almost every restaurant below 14 Street.
Like many good eateries in Venice, this Venetian restaurant is hidden on an unassuming street in Chinatown. The rustic decor and warm lighting made me feel at ease, and the gnoccheti I ordered had just the right amount of chewiness, although it was slightly heavier on the sodium for my personal taste. The panna cotta was very thick and solid...quite substantial. Id go back to try other items on the menu. There are several large tables (one in a semi-tucked away nook), so this would make a decent place for group dining as well.
Dim sum special right now for $1.50 a dish, no matter the size. That is a good deal at any restaurant in the five boroughs. Each dish was solid. Good flavours. The dishes were hot on delivery. The best part about dim sum is that you just point to the dish in the cart. You dont need too much Engrish to get what you want.Pros:Good cheap food. Place is pretty classy being that it is atop of a Mall and under a bridge where the subway rumbles through. These are my favorite dishes and the ones that I judge a dim sum place by:Har GowSui MiCherng funWu gaukand Chicken feet. mm.They did a good job.Cons:Cleanliness is next to godliness and being under the manhattan bridge meant that god didnt look here too much. Engrish is a second language and service is sparse. At least they refilled your tea pot on time since they dont pay attention to your empty water glass nor remove those dirty dim sum dishes.
I went in for a beer and a burger put my wallet And my JUUL down on the bar was sitting in the corner with family went to the bathroom and when I came back the JUUL was gone if your things aren’t safe at a restaurant in Massapequa That’s really sadIf you can’t feel safe in such a popular Family place BEWARE!

2021-08-17I didnt quite like this place. Food wasnt tasty and honestly wasnt impressed. The servers were nice, cordial and helpful. I came out of the restaurant a bit dissatisfed about my overall experience. Also note that gratuity is automatically added to bill for group dining, Im not sure if this applies to 1-person dine in. I had the indoor, basement style dinner.Overall just a 2-star experience

2022-04-09Hidden gem in Chinatown! Bacaro literally transports you to Venice with an atmosphere that is cozy, romantic, rustic and sexy rolled into one. Better yet, from the greeter to table side service, the hospitality was first in class, genuine and unobtrusive. They took the greatest care to ensure our experience was memorable. Now, as far as the food, simply delectable. From the quality, flavors to presentation, Bacaro certainly exceeded our expectations. Kudos to the chef and entire team for an amazing culinary journey!

2021-07-19Some of the best Italian food I’ve had. Get the duck ragu, mushroom gnocchi, marinated ribeye, and mozzarella. The Ripasso red wine is also a great choice for full bodied dry wine fans.Servers are attentive. Atmosphere is classy and intimate. Highly recommend!

2021-07-09Excellent ricotta cavatelli with duck ragu. The spaghetti with clams is a notch below but still very good. The crispy mashed potatoes were enjoyable but Id try something else next time.

2021-07-26A favorite hidden gem perfect for date night. Ask for a table in the lower level, it looks like an old wine cellar down there and its quite romantic. The wine is great and the food is even better.

2020-03-08Had dinner here last week. Very pretty restaurant with two floors, though main dining is downstairs. The food was fine, except for the broccoli rabe which was way over cooked. The staff was superior and immediately said they would cook up another batch or take it off the bill. The dessert on the other hand was excellent!!

2021-04-25This restaurant is a hidden gem!We ordered the gnocchi with mushrooms (superb), the eggplant marinara, and the fritto misto. All fantastic. But the best part was the panacotta - the best I’ve tried in my life. Nice amd cozy atmosphere, and good service as well. Returning for sure!

2019-10-24A great dinner date or group spot. I was there toasting a birthday but there were several groups that visited. It’s an unexpected location because you are seated downstairs and you pass Canal Street. The food is good - steak and duck ragu. I’d prefer the noodles for duck to be wider but the flavor was good as is.

2018-09-20Came here for a birthday with a party of 12. We started off with a meat/cheese platter - pretty standard. Then we ordered some of the razor clams, which were pretty good. For my entree, I had the steak, which was overcooked and a bit bland. Plus it took forever for the food to come out. Not worth the high price tag for mediocre food.
