We took the cruise & walking tour. The cruise was very nice ride, and they were informative. They took us around the island to show. The tour guide was also informative. The castle was very interesting design and they maintained the garden with lots of flowers! The trails directed us to the nice view spots! It was a very nice little getaway!
What a great day on Bannerman Island. Started off with the boat on a lovely day. Smooth and safe trip to and from the island. The island itself was fascinating with a great tour. Interacting facts and a great walk through the island. Thank you to everyone who made this day interesting, historical, and all around a wonderful day!Very highly recommended!
Wonderful trip great history and an interesting format. Out boat captain Justin and First Mate Moose was FABULOUS! Gave us a great history of the waterway from back when to present. Our tour guide Adam was amazing! Ver informative, engaging and provided answers to all questions! A definite hidden gem if the Hudson Valley!
The tour of the castle was well worth it. Not only was it beautiful and scenic, but we were given a very informative history of the estate. The boat ride over was quite pleasant as well. If you have the time and are interested in learning more about the castle its well worth the time!
Bannerman castle is a beautiful and interesting piece of history. Thanks to the boat crew that kept us safe and entertained on the way to and from the island and thank you to our guide on the island who wanted to make sure we know everything we possibly can about this place. Now we know more history behind this beautiful place and people who created this history for us to enjoy today.
This is an incredible marvel rich with American history. The tour guides are wonderful, and itβs basically guaranteed to be a memorable experience. Well worth a visit. For young kids, itβs a little long and slow, but itβs still easy enough, and some will appreciate the natural surroundings and adventure.
A fascinating piece of history, Bannerman Castle was a delight to see in person, since Ive glimpsed it from the train many times, when on the Hudson line. It was wonderful seeing it during foliage season. The views from the island are breathtaking, particularly at sunset. You must consider wearing extra layers as it gets bitterly cold, what with it being the last tour of the year on October, 31, especially when the sun is about to set, and carry a scarf or something compact and warm to put on the metal seat of the boat that takes you to and from the island, unless you court hypothermia. On the ride back to Beacon, we were treated to a rare Full Hunters Moon, hanging buttery yellow, huge and majestic over the Hudson. I have never seen a Moon of such magnificent beauty! It even made me forget I couldnt feel my extremities for a moment. It was the absolute highlight of a very interesting day trip. Visiting Pollepel island would be a great experience in late spring or summer, as well.
- You will be quite lucky if you find your way to Bannermans Castle because you will experience a slice of the Hudson Rivers history. The decaying Castle is a very dangerous place. It had a partial collapse a few years ago. Dont enter its remains. The island may be toured by joining an expidition conducted by the Bannerman Island Trust. If you are not an adventurerer send the Trust a small donation to assist in preserving River history. To reach Pollepel, the small island where the Castle is located, one must navigate across about 1000 feet of the Hudson River from its eastern shore. The Trust arranges tours from time to time. The Castle was built by an arms and military material supply dealer, Francis Bannerman, construction beginning the year 1901 as a repository for his inventory. He also constructed a home modeling the same mideval Scottish architecture that defined the Castle. Both were products of Franciss design and imagination. Francis did not direct construction. He allowed the workmen, who had little supervision, to interpret his plans. The Castle never achieved full usage because of Franciss death. In 1920 explosion of approximately 200 pounds of live gun cartridges destroyed part of the Castle. In 1968 a fire caused more damage.Ghosts and spirits seem to be every where in addition to the multitude of Hudson River crabs that are the islands cheif inhabitents. If you decide to make the trip by yourself be certain that you have told your loved ones of your intended journey and give them a big hug because much time might pass until you see them again.
The tour we took of Bannerman Island was wonderful. The tour guides were friendly and knowledgeable. First you take a boat ride down the river to the island, and then walk around the island to see the castle (which was used to store army supplies) and the Bannerman Family house. The paths are easy to walk on - with the exception of one part at the other side of the island thats a bit steep. However, people who didnt feel up to is simply waited at the top until the other group returned. The story of the family is interesting with lots of historical tidbits, and I really enjoyed.
The tour for Bannerman Castle is awesome from the boat ride to the actual castle! I had no idea that its historic tale connects to Brooklyn. The building is very unique, and it carries a sense of beauty despite it nearly falling apart due to time and weather. Definitely come to visit before time and nature takes over this beautiful landmark.
Went to the Island to movie night. Saw the so lame its good movie Bill and Teds Excellent Adventure. Guides very knowledgeable and Island has a gift shop and there were plenty of chairs and tables to sit around during the performance. There was a gift shop with t shirts and photographs and variety of movie food and drink for sale.Great fun and with a date it could have been romantic. Disabled be warned their are a lot of steep stairs. Stairs are wood and uniform not rickety but lots of them.
Interesting trip π you going there by small boat which is great because you can enjoy a little breeze and beautiful views, then you get off the island and gett a funny, nice guide to tour you through the history about the Bannerman Island. Lovely views and great peopleβ€π
My mistress of the dark bought tickets to the production of Dracula. A evening ferry brought us over just at sundown to experience a open theater under the stars. This seven character play was wonderful. A up close rendition of the age old tale of Count Dracula. Renfield was amazing, goosebumps. The island is totally worthly of a visit, tour or movie.
Exciting place to visit. Full of history with very knowledgeable staff! Wonderful concert today on Harp by Thistle! Great ferry ride over and back with Captain Justin and First Mate Moose! Very safe excellent boat handling and safe docking in rough conditions! Never a worry! Great local knowledge and info on the trip over to the island too! Great outing for the day!
An unexpected find! We were looking for something new to do and somehow this came up. With only one week left in the season the boat ride was chilly, but the grounds, gardens and buildings were fun. A little weird architecturally, but definitely worth the trip. The guides are very friendly and really know their stuff.
What an amazing place to visit here in the hudson valley. The castle and island history are fascinating. Really enjoyed the gardens, well maintained and full of monarch butterflies! There is a cute giftshop and they have cold drinks and snacks too. Staff and tour guides were friendly and knowledgeable.
My husband and I, plus our teenaged son and his girlfriend, took a day trip from upstate to Bannerman Castle. What a perfect excursion! We enjoyed a beautiful and informative boat ride, and an inspiring tour of the island. The history, ingenuity and creativity found here in the story of Bannerman castle is truly inspiring and a testament to the tenacity and grit of our forebears. The dedication and passion of our young tour guide, Adam, made history come alive, and made for a very lively and entertaining afternoon tour. The gardens were lovely and the butterflies were bountiful. Thanks for a relaxed and enjoyable visit. Well done!
Very rude. Mostly everything is roped off they wont let you near the castle to take a picture. The staff is in plain clothing so you dont know who they are until they actually yell at you for walking the wrong direction on the path. The place lost its beauty with these people making money on the island. Its a total scam. Theyre doing more harm to the island than good.
A quick stop-over at a surprisingly quaint little castle. You could go inside the property for some interesting artefacts on display, but we spent most of our time outside in the gardens. Has a great view of the Hudson from its upper balcony. Dont forget to peek into the little grand central terminal - a train stop made for the mini train that used to run through the property
We loved our trip to Bannerman. Because of Covid there was some hypersensitivity from staff regarding safety/procedure.They rely on a few posted signs and volunteers to wrangle people. We didnt realize the tour was mandatory and we assumed we could freely explore the island by ourselves for the 1.5 hours we had(our own inaccurate expectations). The first 30-45ish minutes youre required to stay with the guide for a historic tour. The island is so beautifully cared for and loved by the volunteers and staff.Overall it was educational and beautiful. Id like to return once Covid restrictions are lessened to see if the experience is more relaxed/focused on personal exploration.
This was an excellent day on the Hudson River. The day began with a boat ride to the island where the remains of the castle stand. We meandered the grounds with our tour guide Steve, who provided an entertaining and informative narration of a weird (to me) and yet fascinating nugget of both NY and American history. For those who have taken Amtrak or MetroNorth along the Hudson, this tour will fill in the blanks.
Bannerman Castle Trust Inc. provides a great service! Book a tour with them to see Bannerman Castle and you wont regret it! The boat ride was relaxing and safe. The tour of the island is about an hour and half and its plenty of time to learn about the rich history and explore. They have a beautiful pollinator garden which is cared for by a few volunteers, which I also admired and loved (so many butterflies around the castle made it truly magical!) Bannerman Castle is truly the gem of the Hudson --we are so thankful to the staff for preserving it and would love to go back soon!
Worst experience ever! They sell a expensive dinner in the castle for charity. I understand the money goes to a good cause but they need to put more effort serving people. We got there and the placed us at the worst tables, nobody care about us like for 30 mins until someone notice that we were there, they brought the βdinnerβ wich was just a bag with cold food. So if you are expecting a romantic castle island dinner this is not the place.
Ive known about Bannermans Castle for years and have always wanted to visit, but never seemed to find the time. So, when my birthday weekend arrived this year, I chose it as my birthday adventure and was not disappointed!I purchased tickets a week in advance, and that was almost too late. These tours sell out fast! Luckily, I was able to get 3 tickets for the 11AM Saturday tour. The boat ride to the island was fun, and the captain gave a lot of great information about the towns we were passing. The river was where we wanted to be on such a hot day!We arrived on the island and were split into 2 groups. Our tour guide was Abby, a fun and informative guide who took the time to answer questions and point out things people expressed an interest in. The tour was well paced with tons of information. My only regret is that the tour takes you to the gift shop kind of in the middle of the tour, and theres no time to go back, so if you dont purchase your souvenirs then, you have no other opportunities. Im a postcard junky, so Im bummed I didnt get to add to my collection.Over all it was well worth the price for the tour. Interesting, informative, and unique!
Wonderfully built and maintained island home with a sadly dilapidated castle with a tragic but interesting backstory with a good amount of local and foreign history, friendly tour guides and picturesque views for people of any age. I heard that they also do plays! Overall, 10/10
Its devastating to see gorgeous history ignored and left to decay for decades to the edge of nonexistence before someone actually cared. If every person who visit would donate the cost of a bag of mortar, it would go a long way in supporting whats left of the gorgeous hystorical structure.
Fun fact. Bannerman purchased the island in November 1900,[2][3][9] for use as a storage facility for his growing surplus business.[11] Because his storeroom in New York City was not large enough to provide a safe location to store thirty million surplus munitions cartridges,[9] in the spring of 1901 he began to build an arsenal on Pollepel.
An imposing abandoned castle (one hour from the city)Located on Pollepel Island, in the middle of the waters of the famous Hudson River, it is also known as Bannerman Island. Beyond its austere natural beauty, what calls us to see ourselves in this area is this building that knew how to be a warehouse where military surpluses were kept. Thirty million cartridges and ammunition were stored in what is now an imposing abandoned castle. Bannerman (owner of the company) himself designed the castle, although soon after it was completed, a series of unfortunate explosions and fires ended the building. Interesting.

2022-06-13Wonderful tour. Lots of interesting history provided by our first mate Moose and tour guide Mary. Boat Captain Justin also made the trip fun. I loved the island, especially exploring the trails. We went with my sister who was in from California. It was a great way to spend the day!

2022-05-17Enjoyed the view from the viewing platform near the Breakneck Ridge Train stop. Interesting to see and the view from a distance satisfied my curiosity. Pictures are just with my cell phone, a zoom lens would do wonders. Id visit the island if I wanted to do a photo shoot.

2022-06-17Heres what I wish I knew: Park in the station parking lot even though it says permit parking only!! The ferry leaves exactly at the time that the tour begins. The people working here are what really make this place worth it. The boat staff were really funny and point out cool stuff along the river, the tour guides are very knowledgeable and welcoming, and the gardeners have done an amazing job π The tour consists of a guided tour and then you get 30-45 minutes to explore the island on your own. There are really just two little trails that loop, but you really should wear appropriate shoes. The stairs have railings to hold on to and a resting area half way, but you will have to step on to the ferry and there are many places throughout the island where you could lose your balance. You can purchase some things with cash only inside the residence building, and yes, there are bathrooms π In the end, 10/10 would recommend!

2022-01-22Highly recommended for local history folks or anyone looking for a relatively easy hike around a small mountain with some picturesque scenery. Its probably New Yorks closest thing to a lasting castle from the early 20th century. The castle is maintained by the state and a local family, so the cost of the boat ride is fairly cheap at $35. It is advised to arrive 30 minutes before departure as they will leave on-time if youre taking your sweet time. The island has a group of volunteers who help maintain the gardens, so if possible, contribute through donations to keep the services intact. Definitely would be a loss to New Yorks local history if the island loses its value as a historical site.

2022-06-19Awesome day trip, made even better by Adamβs great tour around the historical site. Will be recommending to anyone looking to get out of the city for the day. The MTA takes you right to the ferry, so all in, not hard at all to get to

2022-05-21Really beautiful place to visit. You have to buy tickets in advance. There are some short hikes inside the island. We had a guided tour, it was great to learn a lot of history about the island.

2022-05-20Fascinating 3 hour trip to a place largely forgotten by history. Francis Bannermans story is a unique one. Our tour guide Adam was very knowledgeable and entertaining. You could tell the history of this island and the Bannerman family was personal to him. Great visit, highly recommended to anyone in the area with an interest in history or architecture.

2021-10-13Very positive experience! Great boat trip with alot of scenic views, friendly and knowledgable staff. The island with its castles is very picturesque, and gave me a feeling of Scotland more than Upstate NY. The guide tour was interesting and very cortous. There are restrooms all on the island as well. Overall great time spent!

2022-06-05What a great time! Justin, our ferry captain, and John, his first mate + historian, were the perfect start to this adventure + gave us a smooth ride to the island and lots of great info along the way. Once we arrived, our guide, Adam, was a wealth of knowledge and we learned so much. The island itself is rugged and we had a great time exploring on our own after the tour. Definitely recommend a visit to Bannerman Island!
