I LOVE BAO TEA HOUSE! I highly recommend their Bao! I tried a variety of their selection once and I was sold. I have been back several times. It’s such a hidden gem. This place should be busy and packed so spread the word - Bao Tea House is delicious and worth a visit! The staff is very friendly and the food is so fresh. If you like them make sure to give them 5 stars! And make sure you take your food to Washington Sq Park to eat their delicious food and do some classic NYC people watching.
We discovered this place at Smorgasburg and were intrigued by the Ube Baos.We went with a combo (drink and buns). For our drink we got the Starry, Starry Night and the the Ube Bao Buns.We loved the drink. It was sweet and tart with a delicious lychee jelly. The Ube Bao Buns were good, but not quite as sweet and flavorful as I was hoping for. I loved the texture though.Id definitely like to try some of their savory buns.
I absolutely love this place! While their Bao’s are made differently then Bao’s usually are (these are baked not steamed) they’re still absolutely delicious. The staff is always extremely kind and quick when taking your order. My favorite bao’s to order are their classic bao, the fried chicken, and their veggie bao! I wasn’t a big fan of their dessert lava bao. It was lacking in flavor and I couldn’t really get any of that black sesame taste from the bao dough. But overall one of my favorite places to go to for lunch! Highly suggest it 🤗
Got a Too GOOD To Go, and I was definitely not disappointed! The chicken and beef bao were soooo good, they were a bit on the spicy side but I love that 👀 Not a huge fan of the veggie bao but thats just because im quite picky and I dont like carrots and mushrooms 👉🏻👈🏻 and last but not least, the lava bao was sweet but not too much, and it didnt feel too heavy on the stomach!10/10 recommend!
[update]Owner reached back to me and made it all right. He was unaware of the 1-star review and so no, he didnt do it solely for this 1-star review. Respect. Changed 1 star to 5 star.[previous review]4 days ago Ive placed order on their website to deliver 11am today. It is now 2:35pm and upon calling their phone # on their receipt — a lady picks up stating its her cell # and she has no relation to this business. I then googled for their store phone # and worker stated that they do not see the order (mind you, they even emailed me order confirmation 4 days ago). This is insane.
Cute shop and decor. Most importantly the buns were tasty - a little on the small side but great for a snack. The fried chicken ones were the best, and also liked the matcha red bean. They had run out of the lava ones. I love the presentation box and the fact it wasn’t plastic, though I would try to reduce packaging if possible! Overall great place for a great snack.
Quaint place with a relaxing atmosphere, limited seating but not overcrowded. The fellow who took my order is very welcoming and professional, easy quick transaction without any hassle. Food and drink was bought to table by him, impressive and unexpected service. The buns were soft and warm, I had the chicken. They were savory and sweet which seems to come from the a sugary crumble on top of the bun. Perfect temperature for eating buns, don’t have to worry about burning your mouth but do be careful of getting crumbs on yourself. I had the jasmine peach milk tea as they were out of the Rose Grapefruit. The tea is creamy with light peach notes and strong jasmine which isn’t bitter (prepared perfectly). It is very light in sweetness so don’t expect it to be crazy sweet, this allows you to taste the actual tea itself. I do see myself coming back to try the other buns for sure, and would recommend this place to others.Edit: 2/13/14 came for Valentine’s Day promotional rose pudding bao and I also decided to get rose milk tea this time around. Bao was underwhelming and tea reminded me of Pepto bismol (would not get rose milk tea).
Discovered this little gem (5 tables, max. 10 people) right next to my favorite film houses and jazz bars in the village. I had their Lava bao and rose grapefruit tea. The lava bao is sesame-flavored and crispy on the outside and lava-hot egg-yolk on the inside, and quite good. But the tea is even better-refreshing and balanced. Perfect to kill time before a film/show starts!Update: tried their NEW Matcha bao with red bean filling and it was so good!
A cute shop for a nice afternoon rest. Got their jasmine tea which was mediocre but I like the fruity flavored special rose tea! The shop was cute and cozy, really nice for a chat with your friend.Their buns looked delicious but I didn’t try it this time. Will come again next time to try a combination of tea and buns. Credit card got a min $10 which is a little inconvenient.
We had the VALENTINES BAO and the CHOCO MILK BAO. The valentines was our favorite. The choco milk was ok it didn’t really have as much custard as I would of liked. The Jasmine Peach Milk tea was ok. Nothing too exciting. I really wanted try the Starry, starry night but they ran out.The place cute, sweet and small. We went on one of those 90 degree days and they don’t have an air conditioner or fan so it was really hot inside. They left the door open so mosquitoes were coming in. Over all if I’m in the area and in a mood for a quick take out I would order the valentines Bao to go and maybe this time get to try the starry starry night tea.
The chicken boa was really tasty however the stars are only for taste. The price was kind of outrageous once I saw the size of the boas. It was $6, but the boas were really small. One boa was done in two bites making it disappointing because it tasted delicious, it just wasnt enough to fill you up at all.
The classic pork bun was spot on. Nice toasted flaky outside with the right amount of chewiness on the inside. The veggie bun was not as interesting unfortunately - would like it to have more mushroom or cabbage flavor. The tea were really good though. Delicate in flavor and not too sweet. Would definitely go back.
Found this secret little tea house is the biggest happiness in my entire week! The baked buns are so delicious! I ordered Lava, pork, and choco milk(summer special). The pork buns are sooooo good, the outside is a little sweet, combines with the BBQ sauce inside with chasiu pork is just perfect! Lava bao is the black one, yellow on the inside, it is sweet and just delicious! Choco milk is the summer special, it is chocolate on the outside and fried milk on the inside, personally not a sweet tooth so it was ok, if order with the mountain tea should be better~The interior design is just so delicate! Definitely coming back again with friends!
One of the best snacks I’ve had in NYC!We got fried chicken bao (2 per serving) and it was so delicious that we ordered the exact same thing again right away.Drinks are very good too. Not too sweet and not weirdly colorful like from lots of beverage stores these days.
Taro buns are super duper tasty. I wouldve given 5 stars for the taro buns.... but......The custard buns are mediocre at best. I got rose custard buns and the filling was starchy and overcooked. I usually enjoy the subtle sweetness of Asian desserts but the filling was almost not sweet at all.
This place is great! I love the seating area and clean atmosphere. Perfect to catch up on work or catch up with friends, not much seating though so make sure your plans are flexible in case they are busy.I had a Rose Milk Tea (DAIRY FREE 😍) with crystal boba, it was delicious! I also had a Taro Ube Bao, soooo good and brought out warm and the filling was the perfect amount.HIGHLY recommend and I will definitely be a regular when I make my way into the city from Brooklyn! 💕
The classic (individual ball) bao is AMAZING. Chicken is good. I didnt not like the beef (I like savory, but Im not a fan of how the sweetness of the bun pairs w the cumin, its just too much). Rose milk tea iced, and passion tea are both great (especially love the rose). I did not like the taro bun at all, it wasnt the right choice. All in all Id still give it 4.5-5 stars bc the things I did love Id go back for and Id be a happy girl. Also the service is great. This is a place you go for a snack IMO.Also my friend is vegan, and loved the vegan options (he pretty much tried all the vegan options).Oh and the presentation is sooo cute!
Excellent local Bao spot for a quick casual bite or lunch on the go! Food is very fresh, we were surprised at how good it is! They make each order fresh... I get the sole bao (crispy fish) and my husband gets the classic (pork)... would definitely recommend! Only thing: I kinda wish the teas came with the option of tapioca/boba/bubbles but there are other options available.
The original Bao is decent. Nothing special. The fried chicken Bao was mediocre at best. The dessert Bao did not have a moist filling - felt dry, and overall just sugar dressed bread in the most pedestrian manner possible.I was extremely disappointed to wait an hour and a half for our food.I did not find this place to be worth my money.
Still in soft opening, had their Classic Bao and it was definitely delicious. The top has a slight sweetness to it while the BBQ pork and Sauce leave the inside super moist and delicate. Will definitely be back.Interior was beautiful simplistic with plenty of Natural sunlight allowed in with their Large windows, and cozy seating. There are only 3 seats with tables to be mindful. There is a large wooden sofa that guests can also sit at, and enjoy a quick bite and a nice cup of tea.
Really nice little tea spot with some unique and delicious flavors. Very clean and nicely designed inside as well. The place is a bit small, so I could see it getting crowded easily. But when we went, we had the couch to ourselves. Otherwise youd end up on a small side table across from each other. What makes this place unique is the variety of little buns (or Bao as I think they call them) that also serve. The vegetable one we tried had a soft, quiche like crust and a delicious filling. They also had sweet desert type buns as well which sounded delicious.A very good sign was a lot of to go orders of these buns going out with delivery services in the time we were there plus people coming in for take out. We will be back in the future for more of the delicious tea and buns.
This is a real charm of a place for a light meal to eat. I had the pork and my girl the chicken (which was spicier) next time, I order Ill add the spice (yes, an option.)They have a food and tea combo and the price is fair, the staff greeted us with a smile and very friendly manner. We sat at a freshly cleaned table and our food was brought out to us, the tea first and then our food. It was very tasty and what was expected. If I was hungry I would need to order double but the atmosphere is cool & I loved the design & layout of the place. It is downstairs so be aware of that, but a block from Washington Square Park, so a great spot to walk after.A great hidden gem for anyone visiting or wanting to attempt something new!
What a pleasant little treat of New York. We accidentally found this place while walking by and didnt expect it to be so good. Weve tried chicken, lava and matcha baos and they were all really good. Anything with meat would be like a little meal and anything without meat is like desserts. Would make a great afternoon snack or quick lunch.
As of this review (May 2018) this place is beautiful, shiny, and new. The design is fairly minimal, but sleek and stylish. I had the Classic Bao, ($5.95, 2 buns per order.) They were really good. Crispy outside, soft bun, and saucy pork. The tea was good as well, but most of the beverages are on the expensive side.
Some of these dessert baos are absolutely amazing; most of the meat ones are spicy as a warning. I have actually tried them all. Very grab and go and not a great place to sit down and eat the baos, but the price and quality are worth a quick stop in. The dough is sweet, which can be incredibly jarring and unexpected when you are eating a meat bao.
Thanks for your response. I accept the refund or maybe a credit to buy other products. It would be better to make clients awareness that the price it’s because of the high quality of the tea. I appreciate a lot the good customer service.3 starts because the green tea is the most expensive and overpriced one I have had in NYC. Otherwise I really like the place it’s beautiful and the food really good.
So pleasantly surprised to find Bào Tea House at 9th and 42nd. The morning combo - 2 bao 1 specialty tea - is a truly solid deal, and service was fast. I had the classic and lava bao, and jasmine peach milk tea. Really delicious, crispy rather than just steamed, a great take on baozi that I feel like will appeal to the American newcomer and anyone missing this breakfast option like me. If you can, definitely come get breakfast here, and chat with the shoprunner - the one I met is kind and excited to bring these baozi and teas to everyone~Just like the staff and I chatted about, baozi and tea or soymilk are such a great part of sharing mornings with friends and coworkers. I hope therell be more and more places like this to grab great baozi in the future!
I used to love this Bao place. The taste is good although the food is a little pricy. However I just got the worst service there. When i asked about how many baos for the price, the lady could not explain it well. Then I tried to get the Big Bang (10 baos), the lady could not explain well if I can order the flavors. She gave me an eye rolling face. After all those troubles, I ordered 12 Classic baos to go. There were only 2 customers in store including me. And my order was wrong. I did not realize it until I took the baos to the office that I got fried chicken baos lol.You guys need to upgrade your service
The store was empty when I arrived, which usually makes me skeptical. But the cute interior was welcoming enough to beckon me in, and Im glad I did. The tea menu is quite restricted, which, in fact, is a good sign when it comes to boba/milk tea places. True, regular tea houses supply dozens upon dozens of fresh loose leaf teas: but they also do not need to be ready to serve them in an ice cold drink. When it comes to boba and milk tea a smaller menu is a positive sign. It should be encouraging! It means theyve selected a smaller selection of teas to serve, each of which is made from good quality loose leaf tea. This is precisely the case here, and you can taste it. This isnt sugary powdered tea which might as well just be watery milk powder with flavored sugar syrup (and in fact often is precisely that). Instead, you get a cup of tea brewed from loose leaf tea in house, with all the richness of flavor that provides. At 50% sweetness, the London Earl Grey did not taste sweet: of course, the sugar is counter balancing the bitterness of the tea, so I wouldnt go any lower. And if you like your tea to taste a bit sweet, I would go with 75% or 100%.Service is welcoming and even when busy, attentive. Over the course of an hour, with a steady stream of customers, TKTK was proactive in identifying what customers needed whilst enthusiastically giving recommendations and advice to customers ordering. Very good experience, and will surely be back!PS: I forgot to take pictures, sorry 😇
OMG! The Jasmin tea at the Bao Tea House is AMAZING! It honestly tastes like you are drinking a hot flower. The rose syrup they add to the tea makes it impossible not to go back for that second cup, or third or fourth haha. After being in the big city for 4 days, that tea remains my favorite part of the trip.
A great placeService: 4 out of 5Taste: 4.5 out of 5.Info:1. The asian guy( owner?) is very friendly. He can speak Mandarin if you cannot speak English.2. Often, there would be shortage of different types of Bao due to availability of such a small store4. very limited seating space.
I guess the name of the place saids it all. They have Baos and they have tea. Its good for a quick bite and chit chat a bit before running off.The place is small and the decoration is simple and clean. The baos come in a box of 2 for around $6 and even theyre designed pretty nicely. The baos are the smallish size also so theres a running concept. The box that hold the 2 baos are cute with included breathing holes. They baos usually come in pairs, but I was allowed to try two different ones. I got the classic and the chicken. The classic tastes very similar to Mei Lai Wah which is a compliment. The chicken one has a bit of a kick to it and has a unique flavor. I wasnt wowed by it, but it was good.Overall, its a nice place but its probably geared towards the NYU crowd.

2022-07-27Got expectations too high given all the good reviews but I dont think the bao tastes better than other places (especially the ones I had in dim sum).Iced chocolate: filling tastes like a combination of cream and egg custardBuffalo chicken: just regular buffalo chicken flavor with added sweetness. Nothing noticeable in particular.Lava: too sweet. Not recommend at all.The stuffing isnt too much, wrap is too thick and the dough is a little chewy (not fluffy or crispy). didnt really like the texture and I think its overpriced given its size.

2022-07-07Tried the fried chicken bao based on the recommendation by the cashier and the jasmine rose iced tea. Both were excellent. The bao does have a kick to it which I wasn’t expecting. It’s a tiny cute place, tucked down a few stairs so it’s easy to miss if you’re just walking by. But it’s definitely worth a pop in.

2022-04-19Service was quite slow because place is understaffed and the cashier was also the only one making drinks (there were many customers in line to order so no drinks could be made for a while.) had the lava bao which was yummy (not too sweet) but also not super sesame tasting. The lychee earl grey and passionfruit jasmine teas were both delicious.

2022-02-19Ordered the lava and taro buns. They were very good. Not sickly sweet at all.Expected more flavour from the lava and more coconut flavour from the taro but very good overall. Would visit this place again.

2021-08-17I was bummed to see that this place only has about 200 reviews but I am glad to help spread the word! It seems as though this may still be somewhat of a hidden gem.Full disclosure: I have never been to their location but we have ordered them in Uber Eats multiple times. These are the best Bao buns I have ever had - they travel very well and come in amazing little cardboard boxes that makes saving them for later very easy. They have three types of buns:Baked Bao - essentially a little puffed pastry cake with bao filling. The ones we have gotten have sugar on top - which is an amazing twist!Gua Bao - traditional steamed bao hat seem to be perfected. The Fried Chicken Bao is probably my favorite.Onigiri Rice Bao - these are almost like sushi, where steamed rice is used as the bun. I have only ever tried the Chicken Curry variety and it is a nice change of pace.I love that this place offers multiples types of buns. For your first time I would recommend buying a couple of each kind. You get two per order and they are reasonably priced so it is easy to go overboard.A note on dessert: I am not a huge fan of Matcha, but their baked Matcha Bao is definitely something to try. It was a nice way to end the meal.PLEASE try this place. I would love to see them expand and open a second location. Hopefully I can stop by in person someday soon!

2021-07-17I am exquisitely pleased with this shop. Everything’s perfectly ambrosial. The tea selection is unique yet classic simultaneously. We enjoyed the classic and pork belly bao. The bao is fresh and has an abyss of flavour. Not to mention the positively obscure flavours of the sweet bao. The staff is pleasant and helpful. Very well done.

2022-07-11Amazing flavours!Beef - quite tasty! A little spicy, but I enjoy the cumin flavour. Very unique!Matcha + red bean- I love red bean so this was yummy.Veggie - this was also pretty good, not something I would usually get, but the filling is quite delicious if you’re looking for something lighter.Valentines bao - meh. Not the biggest fan of the beets custard

2021-10-17All the way from Vancouver Washington to find this fabulous Bao Tea House. Really the perfect food! Beautiful to behold, easy to hold! I could live on this! If we could bring this little pocket shop to the Northwest, the line would be around the block. I lived in Asia for many years and this is better than most of what I found there. Beautiful presentation, simple welcoming atmosphere!Love the boxes!

2021-03-09Really good food. Super friendly service. The dine in area was super small! The meal was good, but the bread came out soggy as if the bottom was left in water. The top bread was great though. Really cool presentation with the Kraft boxes. The chicken bao was tasty! Gonna try the pork belly next time!

2022-02-27I liked what I had, but for the prices I was a little disappointed. There’s places you can find three Bao for 7 dollars in Chinatown. I did like the pork bao the best.
