Food was great and so was the ambient, am not sure if all the drapes and green trees around the tables are clean often, but would be nice to know.Food was great and so were the desserts...always making sure we had enough water and coffee or bread with butter.Great service...
I took my 13 year old daughter and her best friend here for dinner before the theater. We ordered from the pre-fix menu and did not order any drinks. With tax and tip, the total was $250, which was way over priced for the quality of the food. None of us could finish our meals because they were really not good. The beef was very fatty. The beets were flavorless. The green salad was just a mix of lettuce. However, even though the food was really poor, the servers were very attentive and the atmosphere was beautiful.
Interesting ambiance with lots of history in an old building. The food was ok while the deserts and service were fantastic. They are very efficient with their prix fixe dinner and will keep up with however fast or slow you want to go. From that perspective its a good place to go before a show and would have plenty of time with a reservation about 2 hrs before curtain time.
If youre making a reservation over the phone- beware. I made a reservation 5 days in advance for a birthday dinner to be held in the garden, and when I arrived for the reservation I was told that the garden was closed for a private event. When I asked why I was never alerted, they said they didnt have my booking on their list. The hostess told me theyre closed on Mondays, and that theres no way I could have made a reservation over the phone that day (I did,) and suggested I may have spoken to their automated system, however I was well aware that I was not talking to a robot.Moral of the story if you want to dine here- book on OpenTable so you have written proof of a reservation, and beware of sudden garden closures.
I went here for the 1st time Many years Ago as My husband and I stumbled upon the lovely restaurant before a Broadway show(Way before Covid). I happened to be the Best discovery for a restaurant I have ever had. I rave about their Gnocchi every chance I get, even refusing to eat it anywhere else we go. There is no comparison and soeaking of it makes My mouth Water. I am so eager to return, and when I tried some time last year I was bought to near tears knowing it was closed. My worst nightmare would have been that i couldnt visit again. Today again speaking of their amazing Gnocchi, I checked and quickly found out that they are very much open. The amount of joy this brought me is beyond measure and I really hope I am able to visit them soon. Thank you so much for the amazing dinner we had only 1x here but i plan to travel to the city and experience it again very soon.
A friendly and warm place with beautifully decorated atmosphere. Food was decent and they do not season the dishes too heavily which I personally preferred. Dessert was very sweet and rich though for my liking. I would go back to this place - garden seating looked so beautiful but we sat inside due to hot weather.
We had a lovely and special time at Barbetta. Our family went there at noon prior to making our show. Having read about the history of the restaurant on the website, we very much looked forward to seeing it. The charming restaurant is located in an old brownstone right in the theatre district and with the decor and accolades, you could sense the historical significance of the restaurant. We had a private corner table, where we could admire the ambience of the restaurant. It was nice and quiet , so we could have nice conversation. Service was excellent and the all the staff was very attentive, particularly helpful in keeping us on schedule to make our show. The food was excellent. We had a couple of vegetarians, so we were pleasantly surprised by the number of choices. The menu offered great variety. As listed in several reviews, the gnocchi gorgonzola was a favorite. Other dishes we highly recommend, capriese salad, mushroom salad, scallops, rabbit, swordfish, risotto porcini, pesto linguini. The deserts(pana cotta, creme brule, chestnut cake, zabaglione, chocolate mousse), were amazing and I would have loved to have lingered another 30 minutes enjoying them.Since it was Dec, we couldnt experience the outdoor patio, so I look forward to coming back.
Great atmosphere in this beautiful restaurant. Been comingre for years and have always enjoyed it. Service was fine. Food was delicious. We had to choose from the pre theater menu. Unfortunately we had already attended so we missed the full menu. Everything was great. However the waiter delivered the check and it did not include the bottle of wine we had. Beng an honest person we told him. He grabbed the check and eventually returned with a separate check just for the wine. No apologies it thanks. Maybe I could have let it go but Im honest, its Christmas time, I like the restaurant, and I told the owner on the way out. All.is good.
Upscale and intimate restaurant. We had the run of the place arriving slightly late and being allowed to dine through closed hours. Service is ok but no sommelier at lunch meant wine service was more what I can find than what Id recommend. The menu is dense and overwhelming and could do with a little thinning, to be honest. I found the salads to be a little weak but the charcoal grilled Pacific swordfish was exemplary.
A stunning accomplishment of a restaurant. Difficult to say whether the food, service or atmosphere was best - they were all phenomenal. The crespelle was incredible, and the panna cotta was the platonic ideal of the dessert. The best iced tea Ive ever had. The peace and quiet in the courtyard was absolutely beautiful.
Made reservations and dined here for our anniversary. The food and dining service were very good. We enjoyed the ambiance and the historical decor of a 116-year-old establishment. Didn’t rate it higher because of the front of house staff. The young girl who showed us to our table (which was awkwardly positioned between the wall and the bar) had all the warmth and charm of a sour pickle. I’ve been escorted to the linens aisle at Target by friendlier staff. Bottom line: first impressions matter. The food isn’t so amazing that they can afford to usher in customers like cattle. I suggest they train their hostess in customer service. Glad we tried it, but we aren’t in a rush to return anytime soon.
Great food. Awesome service. We brought our boys and they were able to try new things. I had the lump crab and it was some of the best I’ve ever had. My wife and son really enjoyed the swordfish. I’m pretty sure the owner was talking to us off and on all night. Great guy. We walked to our play after dinner. I can’t think of a better place to eat before going to a show. Highly recommend.
I’d rate no stars if I could. I rarely leave reviews and when I do they’re always positive but this was hands down one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had at a restaurant in nyc. I’ve lived here for almost 6 years so trust me, my expectations weren’t sky high. We didn’t expect much, but the wait staff was incredibly condescending and rude. Would walk away from us as we were speaking to them, got our orders wrong and tried to tell us we ordered other items, were incredibly unhelpful when asked about their wine list, and were just outright rude and slow throughout the night. Subpar food that tastes as old as this restaurant is. DO NOT GO HERE !!! Under any circumstances !!!!!!! You’ll get better service, hospitality, and kindness at a deli than at this overpriced, ancient, joke of a restaurant.
This restaurant is so sweet. The setting is very intimate and the staff is so personal and friendly. I had the pre-theatre pre-fixe menu. I choose the roasted beer salad, salmon, and chocolate cake for dessert along with an after dinner moscato and coffee. Will definitely go back to try the pasta and for the atmosphere of the restaurant!
The worst meal we have ever had in NYC. Not only was it overpriced, the food was terrible. When the head waiter asked if everything was ok and I told him I did not care for my dinner (my plate was full and I did not eat it) we just asked for the check and he brought it. He never even asked what was wrong with it or why it was so bad! It was if he knew! There was a waiter before that (because there were many that came to our table asking if we wanted more water while we waited an extremely long time for our food) he was an older gentleman with white hair(we did not get his name) he had a white coat on and was extremely rude when I was going to get the ( as he put it...oh OK...you want the NY water!) he made it sound so terrible that we ordered the bottle of water. ) Later the (I think) head waiter, he had a Black coat on, came by with a pitcher of water and said this is clean, filtered, tap water. It is ok to drink)Way to expensive and all in all a horrible experience. We will never go back. It was a one and done for us and I will make sure to tell everyone and anyone to steer clear of this place!
Beautiful experience last night. We enjoyed the garden on a perfect night. Hassan our waiter and the maitred were exceptional. Food on pre theatre menu exceptional, salmon. rabbit, gnocci, pistachio and creme brulee desserts were exceptional. If we didnt have theatre tickets swould have stayed all night.
Extremely overrated. There’s no music or ambiance, it was awkwardly empty and not worth the money. The food was not fresh or cooked to order. Given that they only offer a pre-theater menu, it was clear all of the meals are cooked hours ahead and reheated once ordered. The worst meal we’ve had in NYC.
Great service, wonderful lady at the front. We had the antipasto platter and the Steak for 2 Tuscan style. They cut it for you at the table before serving it to you. It was cooked perfectly and had a great flavour. We went at 8PM and we enjoyed a nice leisurely meal along with a nice bottle of Amarone. We will be back.
Outstanding real Italian food. Original, perfectly cooked and delicious. Service, from a European point of view is rushed and chaotic. Doesnt really matter as the ingredients are of great quality and prepared with perfect attention. Only downside is the noise level. Way way too loud for a restaurant as expensive as this. You have to yell like in a dance club to have some sort of confused conversation
A very quaint restaurant which looks like a throw back to the sixties however the service is definitely 21st century. The waiters never hesitated to keep your water glass full and the wine selection was lovely. I enjoyed the lamb which was cooked so tenderly that it literally fell off the bone. Well done to the team
Very charming dining room and restaurant, quite old fashioned. The service was good, but it felt very rushed. The plates came out very quickly, too quickly, and we felt like we were expected to leave quickly as well. The food was good, not great, and the dessert portions were far too small. The chocolate mousse was great but wasnt enough to satisfy.
The service was pleasant, but unenthusiastic. Waiters whos outfits look as if theyve never seen an iron politely poured water, served bread and brought food out--always serving the ladies first. The food was alright, but forgettable--it lacked salt and spice. Managing to taste more like a fancy diner you might find on the way the Jersey Shore. It seems as if Barbetta has seen better days... They, like the cream brulee they served us were more burnt up, washed out and sad than anything else. If nothing else I would visit in the summer for a light snack to see a historic piece of NY knowing that you are paying more for the name on your bill than you are for anything else
A grand old dame restaurant that has lost her lustre. The staff is unfriendly and uncaring, like they haven’t gotten a decent tip in years. The piano player plays like he is in a saloon. Food is acceptable and wine list looks impressive but if you are expecting a nice evening dining experience you will be disappointed.
This is one of the finest dining experiences you can have in New York city. Piedmont Italian food is not well known, but its delicious. And with a very funny, very friendly, and extremely knowledgeable staff, youll have total confidence you are ordering something to your liking. Prepare to eat big - there are two or three courses that you will want to try. Excellent wine list and the pairings are perfect. The ambiance here is amazing too - 1920s, pre war style is a perfect way to enjoy this wonderful, rare treat from Italy, and its a historic place to dine as well. We try to make it a point to eat here at least 2 or 3 times a year. A wonderful experience that wont be like any Italian youve ever had, and youll be thinking about it for a very long time after you taste it.
Interesting and fun restaurant with some good food, some misses. Good burgers and fries, excellent fish and chips, Mexican dishes sometimes less successful. Fries are usually great but sometimes theyll serve stale batch. Send them back if they arent hot. The Prices are a little high for the quality as were for the beautiful decorations and popularity. One thing you should never order here is red wine. We learned that long ago that they serve red wine unpleasantly warm.. We forgot that tonight and ordered a glass and sure enough, red wine served at about 80°. I seem to recall a waitress saying all of their bottles are stored above a refrigerator that gives off heat. So its all warm. Except the whites which are refrigerated.Breakfast on the weekends is very good, especially their French toast, although we rarely go because their wait line is always insanely long on weekend mornings. If you get up early enough, the French toast is worth it.
Service here was excellent from the hostess through people serving water and bussing the table, especially our waiter. An Argentinian Italian gentleman, who was very friendly, had some humor and was very attentive and helpful. He informed me that the Gnochi Formaggio will be the best I would ever taste. He apologized to his mother in heaven for the comments, but swore that it was true. It was amazing and melted in my mouth. I had never had gnocchi that tasted that good. I shared it with the rest of my group and they agreed. My nephew raved about it for a minute or so. I know the feeling, his fiance had Risotto and mushrooms, and Agnolotti which I tried and it was spectacular. We shared the chocolate orange mousse which was truly amazing. I had eaten there before, but truly forgot how great a restaurant this really was.If you are going to the theater District or just on the west side of Manhattan, this is the place to go to for exceptional Italian food.
The pasta was homemade. The service was impeccable.Food wise it was all good, the problem is the atmosphere. The place needs to be overhauled....smells musty and dated.Ok to keep old world charm but needs fresh coat of paint andnew furniture! This place should be packed at lunch and it wasnt.
Seating in the garden was awesome. A wonderful garden bringing an atmosphere of summer and out of town right in the center of the Theater District. The decor is a perfect witness of the age of this restaurant.Another thing I like is that on their menu they show the year in which items were added to the menu, some of them as far back as 1962.Awesome.Richard.
Giving Barbetta a 5 stars just wont do anything to let a dinner what they will experience ones you walk through the door. The decor will been you back to the early 20rh century dining experience are grand parents did when they open. The safe wear very attentive to are every need. We got a menu the started with Dine Like the Pope. Yes we did. They had an Amazing selection of dishes to pick from. I myself pick from there selections pasta marina for my first dish Rosted pork with roasted potatoes and long runner beans my second dish and Chocolate Espresso cake dessert. The others that I had with me dinning picked different things from the list. As soon as the dishes arrived we all kept saying how much we liked there food as well and how perfectly prepared everything is. I dont know just how to say how much I enjoyed my food there. To say I eat to much and would have love more of there Amazing food just dont say enough. If you in New York city for a show or just looking for something wonderful make this a must stop in you will thank me and the safe for a Incredible night for dining. Thank you Barbetta and stafe for a Amazing dinner and dining experience in the Big Apple
This is suppose to be the oldest Italian restaurant in New York. I was really looking forward to going here. It is extremely expensive, about $100 per person. It is more European food. Not the usual Italian with red sauce and cheese. I had the roasted vegetable soup, which was delicious. No additives or fillers, purely vegetables. The salmon was cooked perfectly with sliced cucumbers and dill yogurt sauce. The desserts were $10 and not exciting. The service was horrible. The diners who sat on the other side of the room, received fantastic service. Our waiter was too busy to even explain the entrees. After taking the order, we never saw the waiter again. We had to ask the busboy for more bread and water. The busboy asked us my dining companion if he would like another soda. That was it. I would not recommend this restaurant. Unless you want to boast that you ate in the oldest restaurant in New York.
We stopped in without a reservation to have an early dinner as we had missed lunch due to our flight schedule and were going to take in a show that evening. They had not opened but unlocked the door and told us they were fully booked, but would take care of us. Did they ever!! The most unpretentious and courteous staff from the host to the waiters to the busboys. The food was marvelous and our waiter assured us that if we found something to our distaste he would make a change. There was no need of that as everything was delightful. It will be always be a stop for us when we are in the city.
Oh my god this place was so wonderfull !!! I had the best pasta that I have ever tasted and the mozzarella was delightful, and don’t get me started on the staff they were so kind and so helpful. We had a kind and old waiter. He told my family the story of how Bruce Jenner( now Kaitlyn Jenner) and kris Jenner came to the restaurant and it was such a good story. But if you are staying in NYC for a while and don’t mind spending a few hundred dollars on one of the best meals you may ever have, then this place is for you
This was a bad experience. The waiter was unfriendly and unhelpful. We waited a half hour for our food.I ordered chicken that arrived burnt and dried out. They did not charge me for the entree but I still missed out on having lunch. My friend ordered swordfish that was also over cooked although she had requested it to be lightly cooked. During the meal no one came over to check on us to see if all was ok. This was such a dissapointment for me and my friend who was so excited about going to Barbetta.
Pre theater menu was 58 dollars for some biscotti an app an entree a salad and a dessert and coffee or tea. The biscotti was terrible. the app was a quarter of a plate but good. The entree was delicious. I had the swordfish but it came with nothing except sauce. The dessert creme brulee was awful and I love creme brulee so it was disappointing to say the least. The salad was 6 pieces of lettuce with store brand vinaigrette. My tea wasnt brewed and was almost completely just water. The service was inexperienced and understaffed. The bill took 20 minutes to get and another 15 to get back. This place is overpriced. Food is good but its a terrible value.
동양인 차별합니다. Asian women please find other place to eat.Even a single star is too much for them.I gave them a star because that was the least I could give them.Sorry that I am being so emotional.Hate this place. Food was good. But a racist waiter spoiled my birthday.Called me a girl and asked if I am turning to 16 while calling other white women ladies. Ignored my request for a birthday event(I emailed them in advance and got a positive reply + I informed them one more time when I got there that it was my birthday) which other two tables full of white people could get it simply by informing the waiter.Greetings for the sake of appearances. No sincere apologies.Picked up tips before we even left the building.Thanm you sooo much for making me the worst birthday night ever.I felt so insulted.
My girlfriend and I went here for her birthday, which is also on Valentines day. The atmosphere was very elegant and the live band and dancing made for an enjoyable night. The pre fix menu was kind of blah. Also, at one point, the waiter gave us the order of the table next us and before we noticed I had already stuck my fork into the meal. Once we told the waiter that the order was wrong, he just took the plates from our table and gave them to the people next to us. To say the least, that was very disturbing to us as we thought they should have brought those people new plates.
Come on owner Laura Maioglio, the food is just nothing special. No life to the food taste or appearance. Need to make the bathrooms sparkle. The entire place needs a breath of fresh air, paint, cleaning, too old and dirty...Go right next door to Becco judge it for yourself...
Walk in restaurant and was asked to check jkt three times. I refused as I had medical supplies with me. Was TOLD not to put jkt over back of chair.Led to table by staff of walking dead, not one person on service staff amicable. Bothered three times to take order by testy waiter. Dining room empty by the way. Pasta specialty starter was good, main course rabbit - dry. Panna Cotta covered too much syrup.Overall bad experience for the $$$ charged.Never again
Truly elegant, Old World, gorgeously furnished authentic Italian dining. The owner (educated in art) goes hunting with truffle hounds herself in her native Italy, for crying out loud. Vegetarians may have limited options, but the kitchen is very accommodating and the food is worth any wait. Take walk through the patio to see even more gilded treasures and sculptures.
We opted for the pre-theatre dinner, which at $58. was pricier than similar restaurants. The decor was outstanding as was the service. The waiter recommended the crespelle alla savoiarda, a house specialty. Although good, I dont know why it is called a specialty. The beef braised in red wine was good, not great. The best part were the desserts from the wagon.
From the opinion of classically trained French chef, this is the very best place in NYC. Happened to come across this gem bc we were seeing a broadway show and came in at 4:30. Mario and Jon Pierre gave classic suggestions and catered to us resulting in a five star stay.We cannot wait to go back.
My friend and I arrived on time for our 6:30 pm reservation. The host asked us to wait 5 minutes for our table, but we were still waiting after 15 minutes. After I complained, we were shown to our table. The service was horrible. In all fairness, they apologized and even reduced the amount on our bill.
Barbetta is an established theater district Italian restaurant serving the pre-theater crowd in a consistent, albiet formulaic, fashion. The cuisine is good but simply too expensive for the quality. There is something odd about the main dining room -- it may be that there are too many small tables next to each other. Its also a little strange that diners are seated next to each other, like your driving in a car.
Barbetta sits on Restaurant Row (46th St) along with a host of other restaurants but it is truly one-of-a-kind. Now 108 years old, it holds the distinction of being the oldest restaurant in the theater district, the oldest Italian restaurant in New York, and the oldest restaurant in the city owned by the same family that founded it. Sebastiano Maioglio opened the restaurant in 1906 and it is still owned by his daughter, Laura (who happens to be married to a man who won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1999.)It is housed in four fading but historic brownstones dating from 1874 and 1881 that once belonged to the Astor family. Glancing at the entryway from the street, you would never guess that an elegant dining room, garden and private function rooms were behind the doors.Although history, setting and ambience trumped the cooking, we weren’t disappointed. It was truly a unique New York experience.
One of tha best oldest restaurant in New York. Great food ever, great service, Once you dont like tha food they change it right away without charging 😊 Everyone is so friendly, seriously thats tha most important in every restaurant. I highly recommend this restaurants for bday party or anything 👏✋

2022-01-21A theater district classic - stopped in for an early dinner after seeing Tina. It was restaurant week and we chose off of the limited fixed price menu for $39 and were very happy. Our food was good, the service was attentive, the red and white wine offered were both very good ($12/glass) and our meals were tasty too. No negatives, just didnt wow us enough for 5 stars. 2022-03-06Let’s start with some positive. The restaurant is beautiful and the presentation of the food is lovely. The staff however is snotty. Coat check tries to shame you for not checking and then asks you not to hang over the back of your chair (every other table had coats on the back of chairs). The waiter seems miffed when we only wanted water. The gentleman who brought us bread (20 min later) was actually WONDERFUL the only bright point of our service experience.Dinner took a while and was presented beautifully. I ordered the chicken (house specialty) and it was dry and burned. No one asked how the food was so I did not get a chance to provide feedback. My desert was yummy but did not make up for all the negatives. It’s their loss as I was researching places to host an event. Major let down

2022-01-23Second time dining here. This time it was after a matinee Broadway show, so it was not super crowded. Love the ambiance of this vintage style authentic NYC restaurant just steps from the theatres. Coat check at the front of the restaurant & a full bar as well.Had the restaurant week special & all of the food was quite tasty. The pasta was cooked very al dente however the sauce was just delicious! Ordered Vodka Stingers & if I could handle my liquor better, I would have ordered two more! Yum! Highly recommend. The wait staff was attentive & multiple staff members checked on how we were doing. They also sang happy birthday to my friend, much to his chagrin & much to my great pleasure.Another Vodka Stinger!

2022-01-23Came here before going to a show. Service was fast, but didn’t feel rushed. They have a pre fixe for before show times and the food was absolutely phenomenal. The staff were attentive and friendly. Definitely a must if in the city!

2022-05-26Absolutely beautiful! We went on a quiet Wednesday night, and it was just heaven. We were seated in the garden, after making a reservation and we thoroughly enjoyed our food. Authentic, flavoursome, and well presented. The gnocchi was a standout as was the rabbit. Lovely and attentive service.

2022-07-17Absolutely amazing ambiance and history I really hope this business succeeds as its delightful and there are few authentic restaurants left. However...A horrible eating experience. The bread was brought out cold and rock hard.I asked the waiter if there was any meat in the pasta he said no then eventually brings out veal stuffed pasta. This was graciously taken back to the kitchen but then what was brought out was actually half cooked pasta in a plain sauce. its hard to articulate how bland and disappointing this pasta was.my partners marlin was served over delicious ragu but the fish itself wasnt great. Dry, hard and lacking flavorany Italian restaurant should be at least better than olive garden. This restaurant was not.Definitely recommend if you want a relaxing place to have a glass of wine. To eat? Maybe not so much.Hope this is could be a wake up call for the wait staff and chef. Would love to see this restaurant hit a 200 year anniversaryIt should be noted that the staff apologized for the veal and refunded the half cooked pasta. But still.

2022-03-16I had an absolutely awful experience. I came during restaurant week and was told there was no more restaurant week as of yesterday, but I checked some reviews and it seems they were saying that most of restaurant week. Oh well, at least I can enjoy my experience right? Wrong. The main server has no manners and is just plain rude. Very unprofessional, the other servers were so much better. The food was absolutely awful, everything was either bland or tasted microwaved. The dessert was good. NOT worth the price and especially NOT worth your time. If you have any taste buds or respect for yourself, stay away!

2022-07-05Great food. Good Location. The outdoor garden is very nice. I am holding back 1 star for the vibe. We went there Saturday evening over a long weekend around 8 PM and there was no one at the restaurant. The staff told me that they cater mostly to the theater crowd and once the shows start, they are usually not crowded. Nevertheless a completely empty restaurant on Saturday over July 4th weekend was very surprising. 2 other tables were occupied after we sat down. However, they have good wine choices and the food is excellent. Would recommend the outdoor garden if available. Personally, I like to eat in restaurants where there is a lot of hustle bustle and a completely empty restaurant in Broadway district didnt cut it for me. For that reason, I may not be back.
