Great Broadway theatre! Seats are a little tight in mezzanine but not horrible. Seating rake in mezz is high so you generally dont have to worry about the person in front of you blocking your view. Restroom are in the basement so if your in the mezzanine you should go before going to your seat.
Very nice theater in the heart of the theater district on W 47th St. Definitely feels like it is one on the smaller side. The only Bway theater that I can think of in which there are old-fashioned cigars, cigarettes ladies walking up and down the aisles with trays of water for sale. Nice touch. Currently showing the musical Paradise Square which is worth the price of the ticket.
Love the venue and the show, Paradise Square. I saw it for the third time today. However, the ushers in the balcony were very harsh, sarcastic, and not hospitable. It makes the experience feel uncomfortable when those are the only humans you have an interaction with.Itβs a bummer. Makes me sad.
Small but elegant theater thatβs so New York: small seats, restrooms downstairs and dim lighting. Really wish theyβd refurbish these places to make them more accessible for people with disabilities. The show was wonderful however: The Bands Visit with first rate actors and musicians. We loved the story of an Egyptian band visiting a small town in Israel. Universal themes.
Beautifully decorated theater. Seats are comfy and the acoustics are flawless. The staff does a great job getting you to your seat as well as keeping you informed during intermission exactly how much time you have left before the show starts again.Saw The Inheritance (both parts over two nights). Believe the hype.. its an absolutely mind-blowing experience. Everything about it (the brilliant structure, the beautiful writing, the spare but effective set, the haunting lighting and the incredible acting) was spectacular.
Since I havent been at a Broadway play due to the circumstances of our situation Covid, was invited to see Paradise Square OMG WOW what a great Musical the show was fantastic superb and the theater amazing the detail wonderful afternoon, It was a pleasure to go back to sort of normacy but everyone wore mask so everything was AOK thank you for a wonderful time cast and theater people I even wanted an Usher job, So I asked what the local Union was number local 306...
We saw Waitress there. I love the old fashioned light up marquee outside and the smaller theatre setting. The orchestra seats were cozy and my feet had enough leg room. Our ushers were very polite and I liked the COVID precautions they had in place - someone walked around before the show and during intermission with a massive, mask up sign. Overall satisfied with the vibe here too!
We watched Waitress on the second night opened post-Covid. There was just so much energy and love from both the cast and the audience, love for the chance to be with other people and have a night out, it honestly gave me hope for humanity. In a time when it often seems like so much of our reality is filled with fear and divisions, being with others who all appreciated this simple pleasure of seeing a show made me realize how much we all have missed. Go see a show if you can!Oh, and the theater was classic Broadway, with good seating and nice acoustics. The show was fun, even if just a simple love story.
I really dont visit enough theatres to know what to compare between them. They had ushers to direct us to our seats and exiting was made easy after the show. Proof of Covid 19 vaccination was required to enter and you had to wear a mask the entire time. Ushers also came around with refreshments for sale. Overall a good experience provided by the theatre staff to ensure enjoyment of the show.
Lovely theater; definitely old style glamour Broadway vibe even though theater goers dress more casually today. Wed purchased last seats in house as partially obstructed, but they were fine for all but the very rare scenes where there was action at far stage left. Ushers do nice job keeping traffic moving during intermission yet are respectful. No ice at bar at intermission for those requesting on the rocks bevs. Restrooms barely handle capacity of full house at intermission, but it works. This lovely old theater made seeing Blanchett in The Present all the more memorable.
A man was having a medical issue during the show. As we were trying to get him air and help in the lobby, the lobby workers were so rude and non compassionate as time the fate of the man in distress. We the people helping the man were yelled at by the lobbyist to close the door, dont go that way, dont go in that door and so on. Not one ounce of compassion for the man or his family in attendance. The man threw up in his self and myself but I wants once offered a sanitization of my hands or did a worker come and make sure the seats were clean and or cleaned after the man got sick. I understand the COVID world we over state that we live in but the lives of gunman beings should also be taken into account. We were at the December 10th 8 pm showing of the waitress. Thanks.
Saw the Bandβs Visit in December 2018. Most of the seats on the bottom floor have a pretty good view of the stage, canβt speak about the balcony. Music was great and Iβve been listening to the soundtrack after the show! The songs are unique and catchy. The plot is actually a series of mostly unrelated sub plots, each has a sweet message. The show is 90 minutes without intermission.
After waiting 4 hours outside the theater for the box office to open we where able to purchase tickets to the show! Very excited to see Sara preform! However upon my return an hour prior to show time my Iβd and vax card was checked then I was good to wait on line β¦. Np! Except maybe 20 minutes later I was approached by yet another staff member asking to see my vax card again. I provided without hesitation! Then was told my second vax is a few days short of the 14 days they require yet did not post that policy ! I was then sent for a rapid Covid test that took over an hour to get . I missed the first half of the show . Inexcusable! I was not asked to get that test until I stood outside have passed their checks for 30 minutes. And as if that was not enough . At the end of the show I was collecting my belongings And was grabbed by an usher asking if I had a phone .. the urgency in his voice sounded as if he needed help. I fumbled for my phone thst was powered off. To be told he thought I was taking pictures and apologized for approaching the wrong person. Causing me a level of embarrassment. This is the worst WORST most unorganized theater in nyc ! I do not recommend. Sadly the show is fantastic if you can deal with the rude and childish staff! So thanks guys I saw half a show And was publicly humiliated! Great jobπ€¦π»ββοΈ
I would have given u 5stars except for one usher. At intermission I tried 2move to an empty seat in an empty side row and she said NO CHANGING SEATS EVER. I was wedged btwn 2 obese men and told her that but for some reason it was her belief that actors LIKE EMPTY SEATS near the stage due to Covid19 so I went back 2my seat. She had short black hair and a mean stare. I hope I never see her in the orchestra section again.
Wow what a cool theatre. Very intimate, every seat is a good seat. The staff was very helpful, the restrooms and bar service was quick and clean. They were very strict with the cameras so dont try to sneak any pics! You can feel and sense the history too - so many stars have performed here. See something here:
The Bandβs Visit was spectacular and the spaces for production and performance are well accommodated by the venue. As others have noted, the seating is a bit cramped. The width of the seat wasnβt so much the issue (my generously wide backside didnβt feel squeezed ) as it was the lack of space between seats. Iβm thankful I was on the end of a row because the leg space just isnβt there either; one of my knees was constantly pushed up against the seat in front of me. That all says, my orchestra seats had a fabulous view and the seating was tolerable for a shorter show.
Went to see The Bands Visit. Was seated in the orchestra. Seats were comfortable with reasonable leg room (for someone who is 55). Bathrooms are down in the basement, with one handicapped facility on the main floor. Theater was nice, and had a great view of the stage.
Beautiful old style Broadway theater. The balcony is quite close to the stage and with great visibility. So far we have seen only good shows here. Maybe with a little exception of the Bands visit which was a bit of disappointment. Also we had rush tickets and the box office person DIDNT tell us the lead actors were not performing tonight. This was quite a cheap trick
The theater itself is quaint and beautiful. All seats have a decent view of the stage, though Id recommend trying to sit near the center for best viewing experience.Note that drinks (including alcohol) and snacks are available in the basement, though you will pay Broadway prices for them.
First row center mezzanine for The Bands Visit. very comfortable seats and fully stocked bar with pleasant bartenders. show was not my choice but who knew Monk had such a charming singing voice?? enjoyed the show a lot, would definitely go back. musicians on stage is a powerful and effective choice for this show.
I recently saw The Bands Visit here, and it was just an awesome experience. Big stage right there, with lots of space for many changing scenes happening as you watch the show. Looks cool to me. The seats are as usual small and tight. The whole place is small, actually, but it looks grand inside.
A beautiful theater that didnt feel huge. Restrooms and bar are in the basement. We got seats in the nosebleeds and I basically got a nosebleed from the searing heat up in the top corner of the theater. Prepare to sweat up there! The show was great though. Acoustics are pretty good.
The Bands Visit is an awesome play!! Beautiful story, acted beautifully and the music is gorgeous! Highly recommend it. The play is 20 stars. If youre tall, the seats are torturous, but so is practically every Broadway house. The Bands Visit is worth a touch of torture.
The theater is nice and cozy -- thats another word for small. Pretty much all seats will give you a great view because of the way the seats are organized. However, the seats are TINY in the upstairs section.I am a short and skinny person and these seats are a tight fit even for me. Try your best to bring nothing with you to give yourself more room. If its winter and you have a jacket, God speed and good luck.
The performance space is very good. Seats are comfortable. Acoustics and sightlines are good. However, the street-level lobby is very small, and the downstairs lobby was overcrowded. During The Inheritance the mens room was too small to accommodate the intermission crowds.
This review is for the Broadway play, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time. This play topped my list of Broadway experiences. It was a multi-sensory experience unlike anything Ive seen before. The stage is essentially a blackbox theater with limited props, but it comes to life with lighting and sound in a very creative way. You feel transported to different locations, its no wonder this play is a winner of several Tony Awards. The choreography is also really impressive. The production uses every inch of space in surprising ways throughout the play, along with the choreographed sequences that you just have to see in person. Its a heart gripping story with excellent acting and a really unique plot. The theater itself if intimate and helps you feel very connected to the characters throughout the show. Highly recommended!
Went to see Bands Visit on a 30 degree night. We had a great view from the center lower mezzanine. However, the theatre was too warm and it was hard to focus on the show b/c I was feeling so lightheaded. Luckily, I had a half bottle of water and the playbill to fan myself. I noticed others around me taking water out. Also, since theres no intermission and our seats were in the middle of the row I couldnt get fresh air and was just waiting for it to be over. Seats in lower mezz have very little legroom, but great view.
I feel bad leaving this review on the theater page as the theater itself was perfectly decent. The show, however, was not.The inheritance was unequivocally the worst thing Ive ever had the displeasure of viewing. If you can do anything else with your time, literally anything, do that. Id rather spend an evening in times square than sit through another minute of it.
The historic Barrymore theatre is a beautiful example of old Broadway. Lovely decor surrounding a large proscenium arch stage. The ceilings are particularly lovely with beautiful carvings all around, however the seats are about as old as the theatre, which means they are small and narrow. This makes them uncomfortable for anyone who might be larger than your average early 20th century human. So dress lightly and enjoy the scenery as well as whatever amazing Broadway show you are seeing there!
Watched The Bands Visit here Sunday 4th 2018. The theater was attractive, seats were comfortable, staff was professional and helpful. The acting was very good, the sound was perfect, the show was top knotch and theres not a bad seat in the house. We walked there from our hotel and felt very safe.
Definitely one of the better theatres for taller people. Im 65 and usually hate sitting in Broadway seats. Ive seen two shows here now and recommend it 100%, you can find parking at least a block away and its close to trains. I would recommend going downstairs before the show to use the restroom and get a drink so you can avoid it at intermission if it can be helped
Not one of the better Broadway theatres. We sat in the balcony where there is very little room for legs. A larger theatre with very high seats in the very back, and everything is micd so you can hear fine, except the sound is not very good. Could have just been our show but there was way too much treble.Saw the bands visit which was not very good. Canned Broadway showtune style music with a very disjointed story line with lots of canned humor. At the end the authentic middle eastern band played a lively tune, which made me wish it had been a concert instead of a play.
I find is to be complete discrimination that I canβt go enjoy a show in the city without showing proof of vaccination. My husband and I have been trying for a baby and have been advised by our doctors that we should not be vaccinated while trying and we are punished for this??? Unbelievable
Saw βThe Bandβs Visitβ at 2pm on May 30th. My seat was very front row center Orchestra AA109. The stage is almost right there in your face. Iβm 5β10β tall and the height of the stage was the same as the top of my head when seated. So I was pretty much looking up the entire show, but at varying degrees depending on how close the actors were to the front of the stage. And when theyβre not at the very front, you see them cut off from the ankles or mid-shin, depending on how far back they were. When thereβs action on both sides of the stage at the same time, you get whiplash going back and forth. Thereβs plenty of leg room. And you can lay your bags or whatever in front of you on the floor under the stage as it sticks out about a foot and thereβs empty nooks under there. I had a small backpack, which they inspected before going into the theater, and I put it under there. The souvenir stand in the small lobby where the ticket window is didnβt open until after the show. I donβt even remember where the bathrooms were, I think it was in the basement, but I do remember the big souvenir stand was down there. Being a much older building, and built long before ADA regs, thereβs no elevator. Overall a very fine experience other than my choice of seats. If I go there again for another show Iβd get a seat a few rows further back. Wouldnβt opt for the same row again.
Expect the typical Broadway experience here - small and crowded lobby, richly decorated theater, helpful staff, decent restrooms. If youre watching The Bands Visit, be aware that the 90-minute show runs without an intermission so plan your restroom use accordingly.
Saw Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time on Sunday - it was really good and very different. Very nice theater, we were front row balcony and had a great view. Theater is small and well designed so all seats are close to the stage. One caution though, we and others around us had trouble hearing several of the female leads. The actors are not miked except for a few times in the second act when they appear at the balcony level. So seats in the mid to rear balcony could be very hard to hear from. Other than that - five stars!
Pretty comfortable seating for an old Broadway house. Friendly box office and usher staff. Bar and restroom area gets packed during intermission as usual, but you can tell they packed as many facilities as possible into the restroom to try and help everything move along faster.
Went to see the bands visit. Well the facility is lovely I was less than thrilled with this particular show. The plot never seem to fully develop maybe because it went all kinds of awards I expected more but I was with two other people and all three of us were very disappointed.
The seats are the worst seats I have sat in on Broadway, and not because of the play, or the view. They are not that comfortable, and the lowness produces a bad knee angle that had me and someone else in my party in pain for the latter half of the performance. Please update your seats. Everything else that I experienced there was good.
The Barrymore Theater is a small, old, somewhat uncomfortable theater. But no one goes to a theater to be wowed by the theater itself. People go to theaters with the hope they will be wowed by the show and actors onstage.Using those parameters, the Barrymore Theater and its current tenant , The Bands Visit is a magnificent venue that kept me memorized for the 90+ minutes that I was there last week.Hope your visit is the same.
We watched The Bands Visit (a musical based on the movie of the same title), at the Barrymore Theatre. We were informed by the box office that most of the scenes would be in the center stage, so we agreed to purchase 4 tickets on the left (audience) side balcony. That is so not true. Many of the scenes were on the left side of the stage, so we could not see any of those scenes. The musical itself was quite disappointing (specially because we expected more after it just won 10 Tony awards). The actors had no energy, it seemed like there were just going through the motions of repeating their dialogue. The pace was also slow. Although, Im not sure if this was intentional so that the audience can feel the boring life of a small town in Israel (where the setting took place). Some of the songs were good, but none were memorable. Finally, this is suppose to be a love story. I could be wrong (about it being a love stort), but I did not feel the chemistry between the two main characters.
Who is Ethel Barrymore and why is there a theater named after her? This question plagued my child mind. Years later I learned that she was a famous stage, screen and radio actress famous for her career longevity among rest. She was the host of the TV series of a show with the same name DuMont Television Network. The Ethel Barrymore Theatre was created in 1928 and opened with The Kingdom of God, a play selected by leading lady Ethel Barrymore. It is owned by the Shubert Organization, and has a seating capacity of 1,058.Like every other theater, the Ethel Barrymore theater is closed, but before that it has seen some amazing shows like Six Degrees of Separation, The Bands Visit, Alton Brown Live, Eat Your Science, The Present, and The Inheritance in 2019 β 2020.The Inheritance debuted in London that made it to Broadway at a later point. So far, it has received several awards like the Drama Desk Awards, Drama League Award, Laurence Olivier Awards, and multiple Tony Award Nominations. The show managed to run for several shows plus the previews. Official previews began in September 2019, and the official debut was on 17 November. It had to close down due to the COVID pandemic along with the rest.
I recently saw the curious incident of the dog in the nighttime at this theater and had an amazing time. The theater is not too big so any seat in the house is a great seat. I highly recommend the curious incident of the dog in the nighttime the production value is inspiring and beautifully illustrates confusion.
Seats in rear mezz were very narrow, very uncomfortable to sit for more than a few minutes. Rear railing of front mezz little to high, cuts off small part of stage view but still a good view of stage. My biggest beef is with one of the ushers, very rude, walks around shining flashlight in peoples faces, constantly walks back and fourth in front of you while the show is going on. Saw The Bands Visit here this past Saturday.
I love this theatre. It housed my favourite play Arcadia. The architecture is gorgeous. The house is rather high for most plays which proved to be problematic when the sound board isnt doing a great job, but the quality of the shows makes up for it. Highly recommend Macbeth which is coming up next in that house.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime was absolutely incredible! The set design was a masterpiece, and the way they incorporated movement into the scenes helped the audience get a sense of what was going on inside the head of the lead character, who is autistic. Stunning visuals, moving performances and this masterful set made for an incredible show!
There really isnt a bad sightline in the house. As a man who is taller than 6, let me tell you that in the mezz and balcony, there is ADEQUATE LEGROOM! Cant speak for the Orchestra, but I imagine its equal if not better in its spatial adequacy. Its not the largest of theaters, but its been an icon on Broadway and any show playing there would be lucky to book it.
This The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nightime is a great show for Everyone. If you are an educator, however who teaches children with autism, this is a must see. The show presents an excellent depiction of the struggles, interests and successes that a child with autism may experience. Certain parts will bring a tear to your eyes while others will make you smile. A great show overall. We literally sat in the last row, but were able to see perfectly. This is NOT a musical, like most Broadway shows, but worth seeing nonetheless.
We recent purchased partially obstructed tickets from the Barrymore box office for $39 to see the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night after being told that they were not the best seats as you would not be able to see anything in the back right corner. As an afterthought the box office added or down on the floor. That turned out to be a huge understatment. As it turned out, when we got to our seats we found that there was a solid wall approximately 2 - 3 foot in height on the stage that ran from front to back blocking our view of a major portion of the stag, including the entire floor. On top of that it turned out that a major portion of the production took place on the floor, behind the solid box and out of our view. Needless to say we were very disappointed. These seats were behind a total obstruction and should not have been sold for any amount. Do not fall for the cheap seats. You will leave this wonderful show feeling cheated. Shame on the Barrymore and producers for offering these seats to anyone for any price.
I dont understand why this theatre thinks their audience are frozen poultry at a supermarket that need to be kept in sub freezing temperatures. It was in the high 70s outside but the air conditioning was set to 55 or lower. Even if the play Six Degrees of Separation had been good, we wouldnt have been able to enjoy it because we were too preoccupied trying to avoid hypothermia. FYI the play needed some serious directional and textual refurbishment.
Absolutely NO leg room. Im on the short side and cant imagine how someone with long legs would manage. If you need a headset you need to walk all the way downstairs. They have no concern for those with disabilities. Why not move that small area (box) to the main level?
Total false advertising on the web.The hotel and the rooms photo dose not match the actual situation on the ground. It very old hotel and the location where its located had very high air pulotion. The rooms are very small and the room floor, and restroom are not clean. They are using very noisy and old window AC units where we have to call the maintenance technician to fix it many times during our stay.Hotel lobby using very low light and ever where in the hotel the light is low, if you drop any in the floor it will be difficult to find. Every thing in this hotel looks very dark, it seems you are entering in a bar or living in a cave. Also, the advertised room rates on the net NOT true at all, its totally FUALSE. We end up paying almost double the price for the room by asking to pay additional fees, such as WiFi/net access, hotel facility fees , ......ect.I do not recommend this hotel to any one.

2022-03-21The lines for the viewing of Paradise Square πd around both corners in each direction. This production has been placed in my personal pantheon of great productions...I may argue its one of the best plays Ive seen this season. The staging was superb (a bit reminiscent of Lehman Trilogy), costume design was π point with its accuracy. The plot was linear had easy to follow. Plz understand, the singing was nothing short of spectacular!!!!π―π―π―π―π―π―π―π―π―π―π―πβ€οΈππππ The dancing and dance offs were marvelous. A bit slow in the 1st act...but each song made it into a musical concert. This is a must see production. I will attend another viewing... definitely! Thoroughly enjoyed this show.

2022-03-21Came here to see the new production Paradise square, itβs not the first show I see in this theater, itβs a nice theater that the views are pretty good in most seatsIf you like a good feel good story and enjoy a lot of dance , you need to check it out. Also have a lot of Irish dance in the show, very entertaining. The vocals from all the casts are super.

2021-11-27Thrilled that we were able to watch another fantastic Broadway show and our first after the pandemic. The Waitress was absolutely one of the best shows I have watched. Looks like it will not be on Broadway for much longer so definitely go watch it if you can!!

2022-07-19Saw Paradise Square here.... What a beautiful theater! Not a bad seat in the house! I sat in the upper right Mezzanine. Its a little tight but I always get an aisle seat. Beautiful theater - great staff, large bathrooms!

2021-09-13Went to watch Waitress and the theater was amazing! Loved the detailed architecture. Theater was on the small side and could get crowded going to the concession area in the basement but other than that, the stage was veiwable from every angle in the crowd and hardly had a hard time looking past people.

2022-05-11Very nice, stately theater... everything youd expect when on Broadway. The seats are comfortable enough but the stairs are super steep and theres a lit of them depending on where youre sitting. The staff was incredibly nice and accommodating. Overall a great experience!
