Every meal Ive ever had at Basilio has been excellent. Its like an old-fashioned family restaurant in Southern Italy. Everything is fresh, homemade and beautifully prepared. Try the duck breast with fig sauce - but thats just one lovely choice among many. Staff are charming, well-informed and efficient. They treat you like family.
If you are looking for authentic, old-school Italian food, this is a must-try. Growing up on Staten Island, Ive become accustomed to having Italian cuisine for decades. On my first and recent visit to Basilio Inn, I found the food here to be a breath of fresh air. It didnt have the bells and whistles found in modern food, but it was absolutely delicious.Everything was so well-balanced and didnt have the heaviness of todays food. I can imagine this is what it must be like to have your family cook for you in Italy, because that was the exact experience I had.The restaurant itself has a nice charm to it as if you are home. Staff were exceptional and made you feel welcomed.
The only reason for the 4 stars and not 5 is because 2 things ordered ( stuffed zucchini flowers and fried anchovies ) were sold out and it is very difficult to make changes to an order. I was there with 8 others, food was excellent, waitress was excellent. The table had fried hot peppers with tomato sauce( EXCELLENT,FRESH AND SIMPLE), fried zucchini (EXCELLENT, FRESH AND SIMPLE), beet salad and baked clams. What i mean by fresh and simple, is exactly that. Products were very fresh and made simple and delicious. I had pappardelle pasta with tomatoes and goat cheese, husband had risotto. I highly recommend trying this restaurant, they are in business for 100 years, its easy to understand why!!
Being on this Island for 37 years, youd be surprised I never dined at this Islands oldest restaurant before, despite how its always been no more than 5 min. from my home by car. Ive ordered twice from Basilio for takeout during the middle-COVID era (early 2021), and it was certainly memorable. They couldnt seem to get the technology / menu stable, as there was a menu online, but when I called, I was told that the one posted on social media Facebook page was more accurate/current. They have multiple menu which are old or inaccurate. This turned out to be a non-issue as I was told they could make me whatever I wanted anyway, so, no complaints there. Id like to dine in one day. It looks quaint inside- not overly fancified or glamorized like another top Staten Island restaurant I recently reviewed. For now I can review Basilio soley for the food and take out experience.
Give it an extra star if youre 80. Bland, slightly overcooked food, slightly more al dente pasta with a no flavor meat sauce. Veal and duck dishes served with cabbage and potatoes, rather than pasta, was a surprise. Even the basil on the caprese had no flavor (ask for the balsamic). The bright spot was the really good Amarone ($60) on the wine list.
Fantastic little gem. Heres a sign they know what theyre doing; I called in a lunch order for pick up. The man asks how far away I am. I tell him and ask why he asked me that. His reply, so he can cook the pasta so that it will be al dente when I get back to eat it. A sign of a true Italian cook, bravo!
This is not your modern gastronomy of Italian food. It is unpretentious and wonderful for what it is. It reminds you that true classics are timeless and can not be replaced by some nitrogen emulsified essence. Would eat here any day. One of the only true old world Italian dinning experiences that are still left in NYC. The only place that still serves Trippa Alla need I say more.
Basilio Inn is probably the oldest restaurant on staten island, touting over 100 years of service to the community. The reason for this has to be their fresh pasta and tomato sauce. The quality of the ingredients is evident in their garden where fresh herbs and vegetables are being grown. The service here was phenomenal and there is plenty of parking
Ate here in August. The place is so cool and old. The food was amazing. Homemade ravioli was superb. The service was not great at all. There was us (table of two) and two other tables of 2. It was a Monday at 8:30pm and there were 2 waitresses working all three tables. It took 30 min to have our order taken and we had to ask for water and bread. I could understand if they were packed. I never complain when a place is packed and there is chaos but they were standing in the corner gabbing. That is my only complaint. The place and food OUTSTANDING. Ill definitely go back.
99 years and counting and its no wonder! Quaint, old school and (perhaps) dated but hence the lasting appeal! Wonderful service, awesome food and consistently consistent! Try the fried zucchini appetizer, the duck and the pasta Bolognese! Weve been coming here for many years and will be definitely be back!!
Never crowded. Food is delicious. Last night they had butternut squash cheesecake. It was so yummy. Ive never had a bad meal. My daughter in law, whose parents were born in Italy, says it is some of the best Italian food shes ever had. Try it! You will not be disappointed.
Grew up Italian with both grandparents from the other side and didnt like the food (had the Bolognese). Atmosphere is nice but the food and service is mediocre at best, and Im bieng kind. I would have been better off with a can of chef boy-r-dee.We also had the duck, meat was okay, the sauce or glaze didnt taste good.
Maurizio is the consummate host featuring Italian specialties made with his familys recipes for generations. Our favorite this summer has been and always will be his stuffed zucchini flowers fresh from the producer. Close your eyes and I can attest that that the aroma and taste whisk will you back to Le Madri Italia & Sicilia. The zucchini flowers always do it for me and my wife, Susan, like time travel.Tom Laquercia
The best pasta in Staten Island. I’m a very big pasta eater so I take my pasta very seriously. The owner, Maurizio, is the best! He is so so welcoming. Will make sure that everything is perfect for you and your party. Every other restaurant I go to, I always compare their pasta to the one at Basilio Inn & it usually doesn’t come close. Every time I go there, I get the bolognese & tiramisu for dessert. The service there is impeccable as well! Everything comes so fast. All the pasta is homemade & so authentic! You’ll feel like you’re in Italy...
Been coming here for at least 5 years. Best Italian food on Staten Island. The place use to be a bed and breakfast decades ago, later converted into a restaurant. Owner preserved the bed and breakfast old school look, so it is not trendy, but it is authentic. They have a garden with fresh vegetables that they grow and use to make the food in the summer. Overall weve been here probably at least 100 times over the years, and never once was it a disappointment.
I would love to give the full 5 stars. The food and the place was amazing, very fresh and delicious; but the waitress was rushing us; hardly had time to enjoy my dinner, make us feel like fastfood restaurant where you order and try to get out as soon as possible. Not good.
Ive been dining here since the 80s. Always great food and a pleasant wait staff and owner, thats what keeps me coming back. Non pretentious patrons and atmosphere. My family has hosted many parties and has enjoyed basic gatherings here over the years. We have never been disappointed.
My family has been going to Basilios for over 50 years. I guess that says it all. Great food, excellent service and a wonderfully comfortable atmosphere provided by staff and owner alike. A varied menu and a superb wine list make it a a must. And dont forget the desserts!
My brother and his fiance decided to get married before he headed back to the army. So we decided on basilio for a little celebration dinner. I called at about 6 for a reservation for 12 at 8. They were super accommodating. Everything was absolutely delicious! Definitely a little SI secret gem!!
Place is a little rundown on the inside, on the outside it looks like the whole house is about to collapse. As for the food, its just average, really nothing special about it. Ive read other reviews about this place, some have called it, romantic, great food, and so on. It got me thinking, there are really so many sad and lonely people in this world. Average at Best.
This place is definitely a no from me, and my family. Our dish was not prepared the way it was described, when we asked for a new plate (very respectfully) the owner made rude remarks in Italian insulting us. Asking us in Italian what kind of Italians we were. Asking how long we have been in America. To say the least, this was by far the worst most uncomfortable dining experience because of Him. After a half an hour of being ignored with no service and no one asking what else we would like to order, we finally got another meal which was nothing amazing. We then walked outside after dinner to look at the garden. The own comes out after a few minutes and told us to leave since we were done eating. So basically got insulted, got bad food, and got kicked out.
We have been coming to Basilios for 31 years, since having our wedding reception there in 1988. We returned today to celebrate our granddaughters first birthday. The restaurant has a large open dining room as well as a separate bar area with table seating. It is softly lit and has an authentic Italian ambiance. The food is beyond description. Basilios kitchen consistently prepares the best Italian cuisine on Staten Island at prices that dont cause heartburn. In addition to a wonderful standard menu their daily specials offer diners a myriad of gastronomical delights.Located just off the first Verrazano Bridge exit (Lily Pond Avenue) it is worth the trip from the other boroughs.PS theres even a bocce court#MostOldestRestaurant
Girls lunch with my mother in law. We were aiming for Blu and found it was closed. Quick check on the internet and off to Basilio ‘s. Totally lucked out! Ambiance of Tuscany made our lunch so memorable and the food was over the moon. We had an amazing lunch and moved Basilio’s to the top of our best places for girls lunch list!!!Cathy and Eileen Rispoli

Not Happy with the service , the food wasnt the best. Came here for a Baptism we sat down for ten minutes they rushed out the salad ,appetizers were under cooked very oily main dish was very oily and very bland. I will not recommend this place nor will I go back.. Very nasty people Owner and staff
Long gone are the days in which you go to a restaurant and the owner knows you by name and is happy to see you and your family. Well step into a Time Machine and welcome to Basilio. Mauricio and his brother are genuinely fine people with an Old World love of fresh, home grown food. The food beckons to those Sunday mornings when you were a kid in an Italian American home - the smell of fresh garlic as it sizzles in high quality olive oil...organic cucumbers, onions, tomatoes, zucchini (and zucchini flowers), eggplant, fresh basilica, . . . all picked from their garden and served to the patrons when in season.Pasta e fatto in cassa - home made pasta! ravioli that melts in your mouth!Try the pappardelle with fresh tomato and goat cheese! YUM!!Drink like you are in Rome! Have a negroni, a Campari spritz, or any other professionally made drinks! Sit on the patio, close your eyes, and you will find yourself somewhere in an off the beaten path family ristorante in southern Italy!AND BRING YOUR KIDS! This is a KID FRIENDLY place - and one day your kids will remember this lovely place that makes you feel like its is 1968!

2020-10-23I went to Basilios for lunch and had the opportunity to talk to the manager about the rich history of the Inn. There was indoor dining indoor and there was outside seating. I liked the dining areas soft wood finish. The lunch menu was filled with a good selection. I particularly liked the lightness of the sauces.

2019-04-04Do not let the exterior of this place fool you! It looks run down on the outside, but the interior inside is updated, spacious, and very clean. This is an excellent farm to table Italian restaurant. The owner here is buying the best of the best farm ingredients for all his dishes. For appetizer I had the mozzarella en carozza, and it could not have been made any better! The pastas here are house made, and I chose the spaghetti Alla chittara with fresh tomatoes and smoked mozzarella. It was excellent! The flavors to the dish were impressive. For dessert I had the Millefoglie it was very good made light and flaky. All desserts are house made as well.Prices were very reasonable and the restaurant was very busy. The service was excellent and my waitress was helpful with deciding what to choose. I highly recommend this gem in Staten Island!

2022-01-26As we walk in we was greeted by someone. He looked at us and asked us for our green cards? We said don’t you mean our vax cards he said no your green cards. I didn’t get it. The menu was short but there was no description of how the dishes were prepared. I’m not going to ask the waiter how every dish is prepared. We ordered our food. No one likes what they ordered. We left like half our plates. When the food came out the waiter. A Spanish guy decided is would be appropriate to try to have a full on conversation with us. When our food is out. So here we are food on the table wanting to eat and he’s just there talking to us like can we enjoy our meal? He was there I’d say for a good 6 mins. Why would you think that was ok. We visited on Jan 2.
