This is a phenomenal place for 5 star Italian dishes. The reknown chef Paolo Catini is a master at his art and brings new and exciting flavors to the table. The staff and manager Alex make you feel like royalty yet at home at this cozy setting. The wine list is like no other and if you have not tried the prociutto and burrata appetizer then you havent lived. Whenever I visit NYC I always book a table for dinner and I am never dissappointed. After dinner go accross the street where the same hospitality awaits and the drinks are amazing.
I never finish a full plate of pasta but I did here. The food is really good. They dim lights in the evening so environment and ambiance lends itself perfectly for any setting from a cozy date, business meeting or family gathering. Drinks are nice and no complains about the service either. Experience was overall superb.
The food is wonderfully fresh, delicately prepared and well-balanced. The wine list includes uncommon varietals that reward exploration. The menu includes both standards of Italian cuisine and less common choices, such as an Italian crepe dish. Best of all is the warmth, friendliness and efficiency of the international staff.
Got greeted immediately and was seated very fast even though it was packed! Great portions and with a reasonable price. However, we did have to wait a while for our food even asking for updates a couple of times. But everything from the greeting...presentation... to being served our food, eating our delicious meals, made the wait worth it ! Everything such as the appetizer, main course, and desserts were all very tasty! I highly recommend the cheesecake !
The place is well managed, but has certain issues. It is barely Italian, and is catered more towards American taste (heavy on cheese and cream). We were served cold bread (instead of the warm bread that everyone loves). The tomatoes in the caprese were pretty tasteless. On top of it all, we were given a bill with 18% gratuity added, for a table of 2, which I have no idea why.
Delicious and fun! The owner came and said hello and our waiter was so kind. Our glasses never even reached halfway before they were being filled. The portions are so big and the way things are created here are just out of this world. So scrumptious and a wonderful atmosphere. And dont even get me started on the dessert cart. The napoleon was swoon-worthy. I cant believe how lucky we were to get in- I definitely expected a wait at least or to be turned away due to a full house but they fit us in and made us feel so welcome. Needless to say a wonderful experience.
My wife & I had dinner tonight before a concert and was treated to a great meal. My veal scallopini was first rate, among the best I ever had. Mashed potatoes came garnished with home-made potato chips. Excellent. My wife had memorable salmon. This place is quite small, but seems spacious due to it light colors and white walls. Even when somewhat crowded, the space was not too loud. Very good service. We dine in the area often and were very please we found a very nice place to come back to and bring friends.
5 stars because I dont want to hurt the score of a good place. We were a large party, water was never empty, always had bread while we waited. Server knew all the specials and could answer everything.Portions are small but described as generous. Definitely werent. Oddly enough they didnt skimp on meat or sauce, only on the pasta. Food was amazing all around, but we left hungry. When it came to split the bill, the waiter was irritated that we didnt ask to split the bill earlier. Shame, we loved the guy throughout the meal until that point.
Very nice atmosphere, dimly lit and intimate experience. Went for Valentines day. No beer, but its an authentic Italian experience, I get it. The food was very quick and incredible, I had Veal Parmesan. The spaghetti was extremely fresh and it was very apparent that it was probably made onsite. Would go again.
Best Italian cuisine and staff in NYC! We have been there dozens of times and have NEVER been disappointed. They are my Italian restaurant benchmark for superior food quality and outstanding service. You will love this restaurant! Keep up the great work, Paolo, Alex, Mihaela, and Alfredo! We look forward to seeing you again next weekend!
We love this place! Second time we visited in the past year, and we will definitely come back. The service is great, the food is very tasty (the raviolis are to die for!), and the atmosphere is very relaxing. All in all, our second experience was as good as the first time, and we can highly recommend the food here.
Excellent food, attentive service. Had wine, an appetizer and two pasta dishes, followed by appertif, dessert and coffee. I wont name dishes because based on what we had and what we saw, Im confident I would enjoy any dish they serve. Ingredients were fresh, of high quality and treated well. Pasta was firm and tender, with depth you wont see in most restaurants due to being freshly made with quality flour. Service was the correct balance of attention and distance you expect at a professional restaurant. We never felt ignored nor bothered. Things simply appeared at the right time, allowing us to float through our meal.If you are looking for a meal you can linger over and experience delicious, approachable dining at a reasonable price, without pomp or fuss, I recommend Basso 56. They have a great mix of pasta, seafood, salad, and meat dishes. It is what Id call a modern Italian style, not specific to any one region. On the other hand, if you are looking for giant portions of Italian-American food or a NYC red sauce experience, while I still encourage you to enjoy Basso 56, please do not go there with the expectation of an enormous chicken parmesan swimming in cheese and marinara.
How was it? Great... Our to go place for good pasta, good grilled seafood, excellent and attentive service and owner. Also, probably the best quality/price relationship for lunch around Broadway/Central Park South. In Seattle the same would likely cost 80% more, and I doubt that the quality would be the same.Been to Basso56 several times. I am originally Italian and am now living on the West Coast; this is one of the two places I crave go go when I visit New York (the other being a pizzeria- unfortunately these guys dont make pizza). You around and reading reviews to decide where to go? Dont hesitate and step in.I am in no way affiliated with the establishment not have received any compensation for this post.
A dining delight. Alex wrote the book. From the time youre seated you become very special with a staff that makes recommendations and attends to your every need. Excellent menu and a warm ambiance makes your evening a lovely repast. Had the Grilled Lamb Chops which were to die for. Would highly recommend Basso56.
Me and my 16 coworkers went there for our holiday Friday lunch. We had the 3 corse meal for about $25, $19 if you dont get dessert - a steal! Their food was delicious! The service was great, but our main course came a bit late and I dont really recommend their dessert, it was a let down compared to their appetizer and main dish.
This place was recommended to us when we had a meeting near Columbus Circle. We loved it. The food was in the true Italian tradition of fresh, beautifully prepared ingredients. I had the Beet and Spinach salad with a lovey seafood risotto. My husband had Papardelle Cinghiale - fresh made pasta with oxtail beef. Both were very good. Excellent wines as well. Service was excellent. Next to us were diner who come here every week for their date night and clearly loved it. We will be back.
When youre away from your home town (Melbourne Australia) you look for two things from a restaurant in NYC: great food and staff to make you very welcome. Basso 56 is a gem. Excellent pasta (trust me, Im an expert!) and Alfredo was the best host weve met. Altogether our best dining experience in town. Just off Broadway, but a million miles from the hype. Highly recommended
Went here for the two course lunch special with my lady friend. Service was incredibly friendly and the food was even better. We were seated immediately and brought out delicious bread with olives in Olive oil. For 18.95 you get an appetizer and an entree or for $24 you get a dessert as well. Drink included with both. We had the goat cheese croquet and mussels for the appetizers. Both were incredibly. You get a surprisingly large amount of mussels and the sauce is great for dipping bread. For the entree I had the bucatini with bacon tomato sauce and she had the rigatoni Bolognese. The bolognese was tasty but nothing super spectacular in my opinion but the bucatini was probably the pasta best dish Ive ever had. Just salty enough to be tasty but not overwhelming. Great authentic Italian restaurant right near Central Park and times square. Right off of the subway line. Well worth the price. Do yourself a favor and visit this restaurant.Update, shes now my girlfriend. Thanks Basso56!
For a restaurant in a very tourist-heavy location, this place is great.I had some family staying at a hotel nearby so I wanted to find a restaurant that was close and not too adventurous. Enter Basso 56.Their scallop appetizer was great and perfectly cooked. The daily special, the seafood risotto, was amazing and creamy. The other daily special, the homemade pappardelle with duck breast, was also good; however, less memorable. For dessert, I got a huge portion of creme brûlée. I was skeptical about ordering a French dessert in an Italian restaurant but it was sooo good with a nice touch of citrus. The only complaint my family had was over the quality of the sangria (they felt it had too much ice and therefore was watered down).Overall, Basso 56 was a great place to take some family from out of town!
Ate here for lunch and had an amazing experience. It is listed as $$$, but their lunch deal of an appetizer and entree isnt too bad at $18.95. The service was incredible with the waiters being on top of making sure water glasses were filled and that in general people were enjoying themselves. Would completely recommend the Bucatini Amatriciana.
The quality of the food did not correspond to the price. Luke warm white wine and bad gnocchi. Did not like it. We chose this place as we were looking for a celiac friendly restaurant in the area. They had some gluten free items in the menu and were knowledgeable of celiac disease, which we appreciated.
Its not bad. The menu is over príced, the wine is ok. I went there on small team events. I would never go there on my own. There is no pasta dish under $20 and everything else is over príced. The wine list is just ok either.Again, the pasta was perfect, but perfect pasta doesnt cost north of $20...
OMG! What a great restaurant. Went to Basso56 after a Sunday matinee. 615 PM ressie. Very friendly at the front desk. Server and and bus persons were helpful, friendly, and professional. One appie special (buratta), 3 salads, and 4 main pasta dishes were delicious. Extra stars to the lobster crepes and the frutti di mare. Wonderful menu choices for fish, chicken, and meat. We will be back soon. If you wait for a theater visit or special occasion, you are waiting too long.
Came highly recommended from friends and family in NY, and it did not disappoint. Phenomenal restaurant - all aspects of this place were incredible, from the appetizers, main dishes, and the deserts. Would highly recommend Bassos to anyone going to NYC and we cant wait to go back!
Wait staff was attentive and non intrusive.Interior was clean and simple. The fresh flower on the table was nice touch. The AC was a little (lot) too cold!I had the Gnochhi which was okay, but not great. My husband had the filet mignon with truffle sauce. It was pretty good, but not the best. For dessert we had the chocolate crepes, which were very delicious. I think some of the other reviews have overblown the place a little. Its good, and the prices arent bad.
At the moment, the best place for the wine! We stayed twice and I really loved Pappardelle Abruzzese! Im from Abruzzo, my Region in Italy, and I can say it was a very special dish!!! About wine: several from Abruzzo and I liked cause they have some of the best red wine! Good place and very kind service!!!
We were in need of a pasta fix, pre-marathon...all the restaurants in the 50s were booked and couldnt take walk-ins. Basso56, a non-nonsense Italian joint, was able to accommodate us at their small but cozy bar, where we were taken VERY good care of by Lily.Lily made me a robust Manhattan, and recommended a yummy cab blend for the rest of the group. She was also spot on with her entree suggestions - the orecchiette dish was especially delicious. Our only beef was that the caesar salad came over dressed.Basso56 is reasonably priced compared to other restaurants in that area, and is a great option for pre-theater or Carnegie Hall event!

An italian little gem in Midtown. The specialty of the day is often as good as the waiter describes it but there are plenty of nice choices on the regular menu as well. It is also worth having a drink in Bar Basso on the other side of the street before you sit down for dinner.
I Stop here because its in the middle of traveling. Its very cool but also very touristy. If this was your first time Im sure youd rate it higher, but I usually just stop for gas, a bite to eat and a bathroom break. I dont buy stuff or go on the rides as we did that the first time we passed by. It usually very packed with traveling folks during the summer.
Absolutely wonderful. This is our #1 go to restaurant for our VIP corporate clients who visit New York. And not only have they always provided superb dining and service today theyve gone above and beyond and I cant thank them enough. A must visit if youre in New York!
The Basso56 was hopping on a Monday night - a very good sign! There are homemade pasta options, homemade meatballs, a variety of salads, entrees and desserts. Mahelia gave expert and efficient service with a smile. We were each pleased with our salads and entrees - artichoke, beet, and arugula salads and homemade spaghetti with homemade meatballs, lobster crepes, and seafood risotto - scrumptious. And, sharing the tiramisu and gelato was a nice finish.

2019-08-20My wife and I really enjoyed our dinner. We just arrived in New York and got in without reservations. Very attentive service. Menu presents a wide variety of options. Good selection of wines. Really liked their selection of fish.

2019-06-20Another great meal at this amazing place- Basso 56. On tap today we decided to go off book , no lunch prix for $24.95 which has plenty of awesome choices....today pic 1. was Grilled Calamari over arugula with a tasty vinaigrette for an appetizer. The entree special I could not pass up, Osso Busso, my dad taught me well never pass up the opportunity to try Osso Bucco.... 2 pic Osso Bucco over saffron rice drizzled with truffle oil....it came out piping hot and was so tender to bite into, it melted in your mouth. A beautiful piece , the shank had plenty of meat on it, cooked perfectly and saffron rice added to complete this amazing meal. The best part was the succulent bone marrow that had been marinating in the middle of this shank just waiting to be eaten.....so delicious..oh my....of course to end this lunch extravaganza of tastes and to cleanse the palate went with their gelato and perfect cappuccino.... this place never disappoints....

2019-03-10An excellent meal! Reservations are definitely recommended. This restaurant has a small town Italian family feel in the big city. Our meals were amazing, all of the pasta is homemade. Despite the smaller size of the restaurant, we were able to hold a conversation easily on a busy night. Staff was friendly, helpful and responsive.

2019-09-22The smells from the kitchen were exactly like my home on Sunday while my mother prepared Sunday dinner. The food too tasted just like my mothers. The white bread exactly like my mothers homemade bread which she made daily. Do not miss this place. My parents are from Abruzzo region in Italy and I felt like I was there. LOVE IT!! WILL NEVER SKIP this place each time we come to NYC.

2019-12-09My fiancé and I stopped by Basso56 last night for dinner, and it blew us away. We had forgotten to make a reservation, so we were seated at the bar with the bartender, Marius. He recommended the grilled calamari for an appetizer which was brought out quickly with some fresh bread and olives. The calamari was tender and flavorful and the perfect size for an appetizer! I wish I had remembered to take a picture of it!For our meals, I ordered the Lamb Osso Bucco served over Porcini Mushroom Risotto, and when I tell you I was in heaven eating this meal - I was in HEAVEN. The lamb fell off the bone, and the risotto was the perfectly al dente and creamy. My fiancé ordered the Seafood Medley Risotto, and he said it was delicious! Both plates were huge servings and by the time we finished eating, there was no room left for dessert. The atmosphere, though busy, was calming and a stark contrast to the bustling city on a weekend night. It definitely helped that Marius, our bartender, was such a joy to converse with and suggested great wine pairings for our meals! I know most New Yorkers scoff at the idea of sitting at the bar of a nice restaurant, but it’s definitely worth it for the food and the company!

2019-04-25High value Italian restaurant!! Impressive with quality and quantity of food. However, service was not so good maybe because of the was too late for lunch.

2017-07-24Nothing like top notch quality Italian and hospitality in the heart of midtown. The host, owner, Alex is a wonderful spirit and anyone who visits will soon know how much love and creativity are behind this gem. Truly remarkable!

2017-06-18Excellent service, and delicious food. We shared the scallops appetizer and a Caesar salad before our meals and both were excellent! I had the red beet gnocchi in a cream sauce with spinach and it was to die for. The homemade spaghetti and meatballs was some of the best Ive ever had!

2018-04-03One of the most incredible meals weve had in our lives! Have traveled Italy for a month and this rivaled the local Italian food. The service was welcoming and friendly and all for a fair price! Have the duck btw..

2018-03-15Not worth its current rating (probably due to tourists that dont know Manhattan better). Its below average. The setting is minimalistic and has no charm. The service is not good (I received a Monticello that was not even cold).
