Beauty Bar in other cities:
Just too, too, much fun. Even for a bunch of old ladies as us. We range in age from 46 to 65 and let me tell you...even in the mob of trendy and cool 20 somethings we felt welcomed and not at all out of place. There were smiles everywhere. It was crowded but not obscenely so. The staff are friendly and as efficient as I could expect given the amount of people in there on a Friday night.
Best Rock Bar in NYC. The music and scene is still there! Love that you can still be in the E Village with cool people of all walks of life. As it should be. The staff is cool the drinks are still cheap. Also, fun for photos if you want to pretend you’re in an old beauty salon while getting ripped with friends!
Went there on a Friday night with friend to celebrate a birthday. Its a nice little bar with a really fun aesthetic and a rear area for dancing or presumably private events. The drinks were well-priced and the service was fast. The crowd was a bit older, which was a nice change from all the young, student bars in the area. It had an atmosphere of more relaxed fun instead of loud drinking.
I absolutely loved this place. For being on 14th St their drink prices are great. Not to mention you can get a manicure for $10 that includes a cocktail! The manicurist that day was super friendly and she did a great job! The vibe is chill and laid back. The nostalgic beauty salon theme is awesome. They have comedy specials weekly and burlesque twice a month on Mondays. Will definitely be back!
Spent my birthday here with a group of friends and danced the night away! I just love it here. The inside is a 50s salon turned bar and besides the fact that you can get your nails done and have a drink from the bar, the atmosphere is exactly what I look for : lively, fun, intimate and trendy.
Its right across the street from the nugget place. The beauty bar was our last fling for the weekend and saved us from having a dreadful night (it was raining and cold out). Drinks were cheap, the bartenders were kind and ambience was perfect. Plus you could get a free manicure when you order a drink. After 8 or so karaoke 🎤 was available and so the night continued with many laughs, lots of singing and awesome people.
Beauty Bar is great. I find myself there often. Very different and quirky crowd. Post punk meets glam rock with pop ins from hipsters and “normal” people. The Owner is a cool guy too. Get your nails done while you booze it up if that’s your kind of thing. Good drink specials, especially PBR cans. Comedy shows that are staged every so often are actually done at a high level and very funny.
Had a great time dancing on a Saturday night in March 2018. I dont even recall being IDed until I purchased my drink. The music made the atmosphere, very retro 70s/80s style. Everyone in the bar was singing along, and we even hung our coats on a coat rack by the washrooms which was a relief. Not sure if there is coat check, but Im glad we were able to get passed it and safely got our items back at the end of the night.
Some people are calling this a dive bar, I wouldnt call it that. I think its a staple neighborhood classic and if you hit it on a good night with a few of your closest friends you are gonna have a great time. My first time was on a Saturday night and they were only playing throwback tunes, my friends got manicures along with their cocktails, and we danced all night after that. I went again for their karaoke night, seems like its a consistent crowd that attends that, got a little weird at times but didnt have a bad time!
Came here on a Saturday night. Was my first visit and could be the last. Fashioned in a beauty salon setting , the dance floor is quite small. The night I was here, it was a retro themed party. The tiny dance floor doesnt allow too much room to move around. The drinks are overpriced for its quality.
Cool spot. Its a little dingy but thats part of the charm. Awesome bartenders and you cant beat a free manicure with a purchase of a cocktail. Its not the best manicure however it did last pretty long for a regular manicure.I love the vintage hair dryers and beauty shop decor, makes for fun picture taking. Drinks are pretty stiff. They do have dancing and events in the back but I didnt stay long enough to check it out. We pretty much came to start the night off and ended up elsewhere. I will come back and to the drink + mani again (btw, I think it was about $10 all together, not bad at all). I will add pictures later :)
Whoever the DJ is on weekends does not take song requests, which is weird but fine, however if you make the mistake of going up to place a request he will absolutely FLIP OUT on you. I have never seen a DJ lose his sh** like that over someone wanting to make a request...which is a very normal thing to do at a bar like this. Really leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Also, the men on the dance floor are more predatory than average.I give the 3 stars because the drinks are priced well, the decor is cool, and location is good.
Friendly atmosphere, the door guys check your IDs right at the door but are always sweet and usually flirty. This is a casual neighborhood bar where you can get a flavor for the whole block. A lot of alphabet city residents drink there. Its the perfect place for a great night to start.
I stepped in here on a Saturday night to escape the rain. Being from out of town I didnt know anyone and grabbed a seat at the bar. The bar tender immediately welcomed me and I knew I had made the right decision stumbling in. The drinks are decently priced, the vibe is low lit, warm and inviting. Everyone who came in was so friendly and I got several offers to hang out with others! If I ever return toNY Im totally coming back here.
Neither the manicure nor the cocktails will be the best youve ever had, but its pretty hard to beat $10 for one of each. Ive only had the manicure twice and both times enjoyed chatting with my manicurist as much as anything else, and ended up satisfied with my nails and my drink. Good place for drinking right after work or very late at night - in between it gets a little too crowded for me, but not unbearable.
Ive been to this place a few times. The drinks arent that great (pretty weak) And the back room gets way too hot. The only good thing about this place is the music and that people go there just to dance.I brought a large group of friends from out of town to this place and the bouncer wouldnt let me in because he thought my ID was fake. Im 23 years old and told him he could scan my OD and when I asked him for a manager he told me the scanner was charging and that he wouldnt call a manager and to get out. Ill never be back and wont be recommending it to others anymore.
I love Beauty Bars DJs, their bartenders, the atmosphere. Its just a good, fun, unpretentious place to get a drink, and theyre always spinning interesting music that you dont often hear in Manhattan bars. Anyone that gives this place fewer than four stars doesnt get it. I agree though, the place gets hot. Dress accordingly.
Its been a while, but this is a bar that with every visit no matter how many years the last visit was, makes me feel like this has got to be one of my favorite bars ever. Good music, good drinks, great bartenders, fun atmosphere, cool decorations, and plenty of eye candy.Ive been a fan since the mid-90s when I moved into the city and went there one snowy winter night with a couple people and saw Paulina Porizkova, (my longtime favorite supermodel) there just chillin out. Yeah, that set the tone for me. And through the years the place has changed, but one thing for sure, it is almost always a fun time. Even though I dont live in the area anymore, every time I go back to the city, I have to visit and it never disappoints.
This was a really cool bar. You could just drink and hang out or you could also get your nails done...i think. The lighting was really low and I cant imagine theres any level of sanitation in there (except the alcohol) so I chose to just drink at happy hour. The prices were pretty cheap too. Definitely would go again.
Apart from all said below... currently I am really disappointed by this bar and the management, new bartender is trashy looking really bad service and no manners at all no customer service, really racist behavior and managers and security staff do nothing but talk bad about the customers who pay the money that runs the place.(Love this place, 90s music, crowd ranges from 21 to 40 and sometimes even 50yo. So you can say its pretty friendly, and also LGBTQ friendly asf. Bouncers are mad cool.
Went on a Friday and it was pretty packed. The drinks were good and the manicurists were nice, but of course it didnt last too long. It was just hard to move around in there bc its pretty small. Then theres people constantly asking you to go to the comedy show downstairs.
I dont know what ones preconceptions might be, but Beauty is an outstanding dive. With the added benefit of stylists that can do hair, manicures, and pedicures should the mood strike you. Late night it doubles as a dance club in the back, great DJs spinning an eclectic mix of punk and other, bound to get one moving.
Recently met up w others at this place I never heard of. We ended up here cuz original plans fell through --we had the best time ever. The 80s 90s mixes were on point, the bartenders were great, crowd was mixed and above all else the doorman is quite the character. Great times! Id go again
This place is a trip! The inside looks like a womens beauty salon, as implied by its name, but the back is where its at. This place was happening every time ive gone. They play 80s and 90s music which was amazing. Place gets very packed on a busy weekend night. If youre into old school music, Id highly recommend it.
A friend and I were visiting NY this past weekend and came across the Beauty bar and were really excited to do the $10 martinis and manicures. We took the subway across town and arrived as soon as they opened at 5PM. We were told by the bartender that the manicures&martinis didnt start until 6- no biggie- went for a foot rub and a tea to kill time. We returned at 6:06 exactly and asked the same bartender lady who saw us the hour prior about where to sign up, to which she only replied Were sold out of tickets. A party of girls came in so youre too late. No apologies, no concern really. I understand that for the low price of $10, you dont really owe anyone much etiquette or courtesy but I think it caught us both off guard a lot. To think we came across town for this service and already had a lousy experience without receiving the intended service, is quite sad. It wouldve been nice for the bartender to have said sorry or perhaps minimized her careless tone of voice.
The bouncer turned us down because he thought our IDs were fake. Ridiculous that I’m 24 years old (as was my friend) and have never had a problem in any other state with a Michigan license. Both of us have a Michigan enhanced license... it authorizes entry into Canada and Mexico but apparently not this bar. Do better. You just lost business
East Village hot-spot. Best punk rock bar in NYC. You can even get a manicure! Very reasonable drinks for NYC, awesome DJs. Friendly bartenders with style. As a bonus its an awesome place for NYE! Im back for the 4th year in row all the way from Seattle. A great crowd of eclectic people, from film producers to chefs and actors. Come have a blast.
You need to be in the right frame of mind to go here. That free being buckwild girl power madness. Guys this is a great place to meet single ladies. Ladies, this is a great place to cut loose, also where else can you get a cocktail and a manicure? Gets crowded. Young crowd. If you fit all these factors you will have a good time.
[UPDATE 10/27/18] Had a great night here until the back bartender stopped serving us (Myself, my girlfriend, my roommate; 3 people having respectful clean fun).Went there at like 9:00pm, was there until well after 1:00am. I notice the bartender isn’t serving me end of night cause like 2.5 songs have gone by and I’m being ignored so I wave my card in front of her a little as my anxiety is growing, and she goes “you don’t tip and we live off of our tips. You told your friend [girlfriend] not to tip. So yeah,” and she proceeds not to serve us.Context: Girlfriend and I got 2 rounds at the front bar. I tipped then ran out of cash ($20 card minimum). We go to the back room, Girlfriend pays for a round with cash and she doesn’t have singles so I tell her “don’t worry about it, we’ll be back soon I’ll get it covered next time.” I go up for round 4 after roommate arrives and we do shots, I pay with card and tip. I go back 40 minutes later for EXACT SAME ORDER, and then she tells me this. And then we leave...Like always treat your bartender right of course, but Jesus not serving paying customers? Keep in mind I’m taking up a spot at the bar the entire time she’s ignoring me, other people need to get through to place their orders as well. And even if this was a particularly big deal, she could’ve said “I remember you from a little while ago with your lady, and it’s really important to leave us tips here.” To which I would’ve said “I’m so sorry, I thought I made up for it last time with my order along with my subsequent orders, how much extra should I leave to make up for it?” And then I would’ve written down whatever number was deemed appropriate. Or she could’ve just served us and taken my money without wasting time. Still a fun place.________The bar itself is nothing special, they have their little schtick [manicure and martini] with the cute old school salon-presentation/history. Kinda pricey. But they got the back area which opens up at like 11pm for some fun dancing to retro hits. I kept trying to head out but the songs and energy kept me around for quite a while!UPDATE: Weird stuff with the pricing...overall not awful for a manhattan bar (like $4 cheap beers, $8 well drinks...something like that), but they either jack up the prices after 11 once the dance floor opens, or the bar at the dance floor is more expensive than the main bar, or the bartenders just charge whatever the hell they want! Something weird. $4 drinks turn into $5 drinks. Me calculating what earlier was $20 (to meet the high card minimum) suddenly is closer to $24-25...very strange. But youre having so much damn FUN there you dont really care.Random stuff: Dance area has seats lining the walls if you need a sit or wanna put your coat down. Theres also a coat rack that people seem to respect along the wall on the dance floor, and also along the window when you first enter the bar.
Best gem in the east village. Bartender with the 1920s hat is my personal favorite. They might use the same playlist over and over again but its a smash so who cares? Cheap drinks (for nyc), great dance floor, and honestly its such a dive that you could see anything. Ive seen people in homestuck cosplay grind to dont go breaking my heart. I almost always close this place out when Im in the east village and never regret it. That said, bring a friend and drink responsibly when youre out in NYC. Enjoy !
Last night my girlfriends and I tried to enter the Beauty Bar. We showed our ID’s and although we are all middle aged women we thought it was kind of cute. We are all 1966 babies. The bouncer who was sweet had to call over another manager sort of guy who was tall and friendly looking. One of my friends who didn’t have her Driver’s License, but had a NYC ID was told by the manager that they usually would not allow a person with that sort of ID into the club since the club could get into trouble, blah, blah, blah... Mind you we are all 51 years old, from NY and wanted to dance somewhere since it is so rare that all of us get together spread out around the country. My friend who’s ID was in question says fine, you don’t need to let me in if it’s trouble. Whereupon this guy says, “Well, I was going to say if you are nice I’ll let you in, but if you have an attitude..” We were basically told to shut up and smile. Heel doggie. Sit still, look pretty. We said no thanks and walked on by. How does this s*** still go on. Did I mention we are all 51 years old??!!!!
LADIES, DO NOT GO HERE!! There is at least one predatory, aggressive bartender that management REFUSES to fire! Its all over Yelp, but, unfortunately, we checked that too little too late. While my friends and I were there, a bartender stormed the dance floor and physically assaulted my friend over a cider she was holding that he didnt realize they sold, accused her of sneaking it in. It was terrifying, and then he tried to bring her a shot, as if shes going to drink that from a guy who left BRUISES on her wrist!! Come to find out, scrolling the Yelp reviews, that similar things have happened to MULTIPLE WOMEN! And management has been warned countless times without doing anything!! None of us will ever go back, and I dont suggest you do either.
Worth a 5 minute subway ride.As a bar there really isnt anything that sets this place apart other than the hair salon decor. What does set it apart is that it offers free manicures with your drink. The promotion they run is Martinis & Manicures but you can get the mani with any drink you order. The mani is pretty decent. Its worth taking them up on the offer if youre in the area and want to throw one back while getting your nails did. Take the mani out though and you might as well skip the place.
The bouncer is power happy. I put my knees on a chair so I can look for a friend. The bouncer saw me and got so close to my face I could smell his breath. He wouldn’t stop yelling at me once I got off the chair and apologized. I wasn’t drunk or rude. He physically pushed me out of the bar. I have never been treated like that before. So sad that he is so angry.
BB is a chain now (who knew) and although somewhat feminine, it is a cool spot for Friday night dancing. Get your nails done with the purchase of certain drinks (or just get your hand massaged if youre a gent) I would recommend for a group to come here to pregame or end a night, and the DJs spin 80s rock!!
Now considered an old mainstay of the East Village even as the 7-11, IHOP, and Subway shop growl at its front door. The gimmick here are some vintage beauty shop hair dryer seating, and manicures during happy hour. DJ booth in the front for weeknights when the back room isnt open. The back room is tiny, and packed on weekends with sweaty dancers and a minibar. The best night of the week is Saturday, when Michael T and Twig the Wonderkid spin 80s hits and rock and roll, usually with movies projected on the wall as a counterpoint. This is a good place to end up your night with some dance therapy, since its conveniently located now next to an IHOP where you can soak up your alcohol consumption with pancakes.
Never go to this place, the staff is extremely rude and unprofessional. Before I even entered the bar the bouncer told me that I could not come in because I looked like I had too many drinks, when I really was just searching through my wallet to find my ID but to him that meant I was tipsy!!!!

2022-06-29Fantastic bar that has been a part of the neighborhood for decades. Do you want to hear 80s music with reasonably priced drinks, not too cheap, not too expensive, this is where you want to party!! Spread the news! There’s a wonderful house music party that happens the last Thursday of every month. It’s fine Dj JMP Williams , that’s the bomb!!We have Michael Tee and friends on the weekends.! And a group of veteran bartenders is that rock!! Please share with your friends!!!!

2022-03-10Hand down one my favorites bars in the city. The music here is always good and drinks are decently priced. It feels like a dive bar but still very classy and got a character to it.

2019-05-06Love this little dance bar in NYC.Its an former beauty salon and you can see it in the deco and before 10pm you still can get a decent manicure for 10$ (one drink included). The dance floor in the back room is on the smaller side and at busy times it feels overcrowded. But the music was always dancable and groovy ;-)Drinks are strong and reasonable priced, staff very friendly.

2022-02-07Amazing place great energy. The best DJs in NYC and great Bartenders and managers. A great classy bar. They used to do hair and nails there as well. If you are in NYC drop by.

2022-02-06They didn’t have manicures when we went and the bearded bartender was being a real jerk to customers. I saw him yell at more than one kid. Terrible service and average drinks. Not worth it

2019-02-13Beauty Bar has an awesome vibe about it. It can swing from being wildly crowded to being really laid back and low key. Either way, cheap beers and whiskey in a dimly lit ostensible beauty salon? You can even get a manicure on certain nights. Hey you do you.

2020-07-26Delicious drinks and now delicious hot dogs are on Deck. Stop by and grab a frozen margarita or whatever your thirst desires. Best bartender is always at the Booth

2017-03-15Love the decor and that it used to be an actual beauty bar. Great drink prices and you cant beat $10 for a manicure and a cocktail. Free comedy most nights. The only drawback is that because its on 14th, it can attract some yuppies.

2021-03-27Greatest bar in NYC! Punk rock vibes splattered with glitter, glam and hair dryer chairs.
