Amazing! The only restaurant I go to for authentic & delicious Indian food. Wonderful, friendly & attentive staff & the food speaks for itself. The drinks are out of this world (try the lychee lover or the Varanasi). The Salmon tikka…so juicy & full of flavor! Do yourself the favor & visit!
One of the best Indian 🇮🇳 restaurants in New York. Love the location and the staff was super friendly. It is a well kept neat and clean restaurant and food tastes delicious. We ordered paneer tikka and chicken tikka masala along with some naan. They gave us complimentary rice with the food as well.
My Chat with the owner on WhatsApp - They simply say that “strange that you didn’t enjoy the items …”I thought I will post it all for people to decide.[25.06.22, 22:34:30] Mahesh M Gandhi: Its just about the quality of food. The Roti was supposed to be Crispy - it was mostly burnt.[25.06.22, 22:34:55] Mahesh M Gandhi: I packed most of it and brought it along to give it to a homeless person on the way.[25.06.22, 22:38:32] Mahesh M Gandhi: image omitted[25.06.22, 22:39:24] Mahesh M Gandhi: I can’t teach your chef that chicken 65 has to be Dry… small pieces nicely cooked with Andhra/Kerala spices. I ordered this because your Server recommended this.[25.06.22, 22:41:43] Mahesh M Gandhi: Maa Kee Dal was again too much gravy - maybe he was trying to do a Vegan Dal to be as thick as Dal Makhni.[25.06.22, 22:43:29] Mahesh M Gandhi: I hope to hear from you. I spent 60 USD .. came back most dissatisfied and disappointed. 🙏[25.06.22, 23:35:29] Benares NYC: Hey thanks for reaching out[25.06.22, 23:35:46] Benares NYC: Appreciate the feedback and will pass it on to the chefs[25.06.22, 23:36:07] Benares NYC: Our chef does it with a Twist[25.06.22, 23:36:42] Benares NYC: Strange you didn’t enjoy the items as we have been in business 12 years so flavor and service is what we take pride in. Give us another chance
I bought the Aloo Baingan for takeout, which is a vegan dish, its an eggplant curry with potatoes and a side of rice. It was thick, delicious and, spicy. The rice was cold which is why the 4 stars. I also bought the lentil soup, havent tried it yet. Very good food, highly recommend.
It was my very first time trying Indian food and I was not disappointed. The food here was so good and the staff was phenomenal and very friendly. They answered whatever questions I had about their food and at the end, I ended up enjoying my meal. The decor is very nice and its a place Id definitely like to come back to. You get a lot of food and it was not very expensive at all. I definitely recommend this place. Everything good in these reviews that you see about this place is true. Definitely visit them, especially if its your first time trying Indian food.
I wish I could give zero stars because any restaurant that condones prejudice and racist behavior is not it! I decided to stop by for a to go order between classes and server posted at the door was terrible! A delivery driver came in after I placed my order, the servers tone instantly changed, he was extremely dismissive and rude. The driver later asks to use the restroom and the server refuses because “he’s not a paying customer” and proceeds to say “no restroom for delivery boys” Sad to see this behavior in 2022, canceled my order immediately and will not be eating from here!
A place to visit to taste Indian food. We tried- Kashmiri Kabab: beet root made kabab. Bit sweet and was very soft. taste delicious.- Achari Bhindi which came with rice: it was full masaledar- Dal tadka: it was ok, we found it blend- Naan : this was tandoori like any other naan-Bullet Naan : must try thing in the restaurant. It was crispy namak mirchi paratha kind.- mango lassi: it was more sweet than expected.Ambience was elegant. Service was promptOverall we loved it.
I was visiting NYC for day and had our lunch here and the food was just OK. The food portion was good, not much variety from the lunch menu, wish they had a full menu for lunch. Service could have been better, had to remind them of our orders multiple times and they were busy focusing on a few tables. Lime soda was a Joke.
Extreme case of mismanagementThis was quite a unique experience of seeing the manager telling customers not to complain & eat food to throwing them cutlery in front of everyone to leaving the restaurant in frustration when all the tables started complaining.I have never seen such a poorly managed restaurant anywhere till date. Literally every table had one or the other issues starting from seating , which was horribly managed (One party was made to wait for 1 hour and then they were told to leave without getting the food) to serving the food. Drinks were screwed up so badly that we ended up not having it. When asked for cutlery after them putting the random dishes on our table which weren’t even ordered, the manager while walking inside threw the cutlery in frustration. When we complained, manager clearly mentioned that you are here for food and not complaint. Eat and leave!!Final moment was when Manager left the restaurant in frustration when everyone started complaining.I took a 6 member group, tired of exploring the city on this long weekend so couldn’t leave the restaurant since everyone was hungry.Food is ok but management is extremely horrible. I hope owner take some action immediately to address this mismanagement.
Our family stopped here for lunch after a lot of sightseeing, and we’re so glad we did! Not only was the food some of the best Indian I’ve ever eaten, the staff went out of their way to get our hungry, grumpy 8-year-old out of her bad mood. Super friendly and generous people here. Wonderful dining experience- we can’t wait to go back!
This place started off very shaky to the point where I was going to leave. However they did redeem themselves frim the middle to end. I think they overly booked themselves and were very understaffed however the food was impeccable and the manager went out of his way to make things right in the end. Thank you for an amazing time and I wish you another 70 years in business. I would recommend going to this place for a very nice dinner
Came in with kids and were seated next to drafty door. When we first asked them for reservations for better seating, they said its open seating but when we got in were seated next to the exit doors.Food was slightly better, which earned them 2nd star.2 out of 5 stars.
Ive tried three Indian places in FiDi and this is the best.Only con of this place that isnt even really a con is the portion sizes are huge. You can easily make a meal and a half or two out of one dish with a nan on the side.Pros of this place:* Great food* Huge portion sizes* Great service* Spicy food is very spicyI recommend getting the lamb vindaloo if you like spicy food. Thats my go to.
DO NOT GO HERE!I went here on a Sunday afternoon (apparently the most busy days for the restaurants). The server was standing right outside the restaurant and smoking. The manager was cleaning the tables and forgot to address is for next 5 minutes (there was no one else in the restaurant). We finally got the table and see the server who had come from his smoking break, WITHOUT even washing his hands or using a sanitizer. Then I had a question about the menu, which I made sure I ask very politely to the manager. He couldnt answer the question. I even told him, its okay if its not written anywhere and if you cant answer, just wanted to clarify my doubt. He was the most unprofessional manager ever. He started telling me how they have to pay the monthly rent of $25000 (as if Im asking him for his money). Then I asked him the reason why he was talking to me like that, to which he looks at me, waves his hand at me with a frown, and says, cool down, Ill come back. ABSOLUTELY NOT ACCEPTABLE!! And I walked out of the restaurant. Funnily, Mr. Manager then says, when I had already left the table, we cant serve you right now! Im sure the food here must be good, but we go out to have a good experience overall. And the people here were anything but customer friendly. There are much better and more polite people available in the same area. Please go there!
This place is amazing! It was my first time trying Indian food and I was definitely impressed. My palate was thanking my afterwards. Our waiter and cook were so descriptive when it came to describing the dish and catering it to our palates. I would definitely recommend this place!!! Great lunch specials as well so if you are in the neighborhood during lunch definitely check their deals out.
Terrific dinner seated outside tonight, my first time at Benares. My vegan daughter also highly recommends as they have a distinct vegan section on the menu... very thoughtful. The non vegans had lamb vindaloo and Andhra chicken curry, both really good. The vindaloo was spicy as it should be, not turned down at all (okay maybe just a teeny bit) for Western tastes. Vegan had the aloo baingan, super yummy with the roasted eggplant.Rice breads as per usual, though the rosemary naan was a standoutVery friendly, relaxed serviceExcellent!
Unprofessional, not clean, uncoordinated staff, too many boxes at the entrance and definitely not worth what you’re paying for. The salad bland with no dressing. The staff forcibly made us tip the amount that they selected even thought should be voluntary from the customer’s end.
The food was delicious.I went with my family and we were 5. We had kolhapuri misal masala and aalo tikki for appetizers and both were amazing..!For the main course we had roti, garlic naan, malai kofta, vegetable vindaloo and yellow dal.All of them were really good. Although we didnt like vegetable vindaloo too much. Its made with vinegar, so it was a bit sour and may be thats the reason we didnt like it. But apart from that we liked all the food.!Also, the service was good.! We went here during the peak time and so the manager told us in advance that the service would be a bit late. Although the food was served on time..!
We went to Benares tonight for the second time. It was great as before. We sat outside due to Covid, but they have comfortable outdoor space that is covered and enclosed. It was a super nice night. The food was great. Our server remembered us from before even though it was at least a month since the last time we were there. We ordered Lamb Korma and Lamb Biryani. They have great food. We also ordered a Mango Lassi. It was great as well. Everything is running fine here now again after Covid.
Amazing! Visited here a few days ago. Kevin was an excellent host with brilliant customer service. He was so welcoming and accomodating, gave good recommondations on the food and made great cocktails. The food was delicious - butter chicken, chicken briyani, goan salmon curry and garlic naan especially. Other staff members including Joseph and Roberto were great. Will definitely visit again the next time I go to New York.
Pathetic management.Overrated food.People actually dont know their job.1. Took almost 15 mins to give only wine. Seems like they make fresh wine.2. Drinks were pathetic , even messed up tequila and soda. 2 same drink came completely different in taste.3. Served naan after 15 min serving curry so entire curry was cold.4. 4 times they came up with dish we didnt order asking.5.Manager ran in the middle of everything. Please dont go wastage of money.Giving one start bcoz cant give 0.
Amazing food..we ordered the veg and non veg lunch specials that included an appetizer, main course and a dessert..diwani handi and chicken malai korma were delicious. Loved the rose lassi and gulab jamun. I would highly recommend this place in tribeca (tried the tamarind tribeca too and it’s not good, so would recommend this one)
5/5 ! Best Indian Food in NYC - Everything was delicious - each dish comes out hot and has good spice level (not overwhelming). The naan, lamb chops, daal, cauliflower and butter chicken were all excellent. Highly recommend Benares as your go to for Indian in NYC. Service is top notch and you should try a Bira 91 (Indian craft beer!)
Had a lunch at Benares recently and truly enjoyed my experience here. It’s a nice sit down Indian spot in TriBeCa. Has ample seating and the service was great. The menu is quite extensive but the servers helped us figure out everything. Also the meat here is Halal. They start you off with fryums and some chutni that you will love as a light snack while you wait for your apps. In the apps we got the Khasta Gobhi, Galouti Kebab, Paneer Tikka. All were good but really enjoyed the paneer Tikka. For the mains, the Dum Biryani is amazing and then the butter chicken is a must. One of the best butter chickens I have had especially with garlic naan. So good! For dessert I would highly recommend getting the Atom Bomb, which is a lava cake with rose petal ice cream, you will love it!It’s a little pricey tho that comes with the location, but the food and service is top notch. They also have really good lunch specials starting from 12.95. Def check this spot out for lunch or dinner if you are looking for a nice sit down Indian spot.
We were around the area and wanted to try at this place. It was not busy on a Sunday afternoon. They seated us immediately. They had a 3 course lunch menu with varying options (veg, non veg, sea food). Prices are reasonable. The food tasted very good. We had the soup and Samosa as starters. The taste of Chicken tikka was ok. The Andhra chicken curry was spicy. They gave Naan and rice as well. Over all the experience was great. But why 4/5, when I saw the bill they included a tip of 18%. Which I did not like at all. I would have given the same amount by myself but the addition to the bill I did not like it. And on top that there was a space for gratuity.
I have to start with mentioning how AMAZINGGGGG the food is. I dont really write reviews, but place is too good to not review. I have been to many Indian restaurants in NYC, but this has definitely been my best experience. Everything about this place was great including the service, ambiance, and location. Also, the prices dont dig a whole in your pocket and the staff is very welcoming. Its very rare to experience that on a Saturday evening in NYC, and I was IMPRESSED. We took our friends there for dinner, and we were so happy to have picked this spot over anything else. Our friends loved the food and we devoured the dessert. If you have never been, do check it out! They mentioned they offer summer brunches - CANT WAIT!!!!!
Our first visit here this weekend. Had a reservation as it was the memorial day weekend. It was crazy busy here but the staff kept up. The food was great... we really liked the smoked chicken and beet root tikki. I do recommend them and also making a reservation if planning over the weekend. The chicken makhani was tasty as well
This place is absolutely amazing. .food was delicious. We had a lamb dish and vegetarian okra type dish. Plate was a huge serving, I had enough leftovers for 3 days. Awesome service..friendly, speedy, felt we were very well attended to, even though we came in looking like we didnt belong. Jeans, tired , late night with tons of shopping bags. The space itself had a nice dimly light ambience. Romantic feel. Clean modern bathrooms. Would definitely eat here again.
Come here for a family dinner. The food here is delicious. The portions are ample and the staff is VERY ATTENTIVE. They checked in on us multiple times throughout the meal. Will definitely come back. They have outdoor and indoor seating. There is ample street parking in the evening.
Lovely place. I’ve been to a couple Indian restaurants in the city and I must say the presentation and taste of the food at Benares is unmatched. Would definitely recommend the lamb vindaloo and the chicken tikka masala. In addition, the dessert was great. Would come again!
I came here cos the place I wanted to go was closed, but it was worth to be here. After entering in, a member of the staff will come and take you to your table. The restaurant has fancy decoration, very modern with some women shapes, sofas and wood chairs and tables. For lunch they have a two course menu and, with a lot of options in each course, so it looked like a good option to go.As the first option I had Seekh kabab, Ive never tried this before, I liked but I didnt loved it. Then I chose Lamb curry with naan, pretty tasty and spicy, meat was really tender, loved it.Lunch menu included a dessert, so I had rice pudding, better than average. In summary I enjoyed the experience, staff was nice and fast, and the most important the food was really good.
Benares gets 4 stars for food but zero for service. The food was cooked very well, nicely seasoned, not overly spicy. We ordered the tandoori chicken which was cooked right, juicy and tender. The chili paneer was very flavorful- the caramelized onions blended well with green and red peppers and paneer. The paneer was soft and cooked perfectly. The chicken tikka paneer was excellent- the tikka gravy was the right consistency with robust flavor. The naan was soft, the garlic naan had a nice kick to it. But the service...once we were finally able to get our order in and food to the table the waiters just left us. No one came to check in and ask if we needed anything. We weren’t even able to flag them down- surprising bc there weren’t a lot of people in the restaurant. So zero for service, food was good...but plenty of other options around the area where you can have both
Good place to take a bite. We ordered Benarasi kachori, mutter paneer, malai kofta, and some breads. Malai kofta taste cannot be described in words, It was just 😋. Butter roti was best out of all the different type of breads we ordered. They are allowing outside dine ins with limited capacity. Food quantity was more than sufficient for two people.
I had the vegetarian special meal which includes one appetizer, one main course which includes naan, dal and rice and a desert in the end. The food was authentic Indian and delicious. You get everything for 12$ which is perfect for what you get.Check the photos for better idea.
Loved the appetizer and main course, not sure about the dessert though. I got the Gobi for appetizer and it was really crisp and the sauce tasted great. The staff was very quick and responsive with the water and changing plates between app, meal and dessert. I got the mirchi ka Sala with baingan and I loved it. Didnt know it came with rice so I also got an aloo paratha. I thought the stuffing inside wasnt that much but the main entree curry was delicious. The eggplant and chili were both really tasty and the sauce was great. I thought the dessert wasnt that fresh and very small so Id just focus on the appetizers and entree if youre here for quality Indian food.
We had an incredible experience here. The service was amazing and the food was top notch. I am vegan and they had plenty of options for me and told me if I didnt like the dish they suggested, they would make me something else (it wasnt necessary though, as the food was delicious). The lunch special is an excellent deal. It was around $11 for an appetizer, main dish with rice, and a flat bread. As we were finishing, they came out with some rice pudding.Overall, it was very delicious and authentic! Next time Im in NYC, Im coming back here!
One star is too much for this restaurant! We had visited this restaurant on 31st December. We ordered Biryani . It tasted as if it was made two days ago . Rice layers outside seems fresh than inner layers . Any Desi person would know this isn’t the taste of food you expect when you are looking for a desi restaurant. Not a good suggestion especially on a New Year’s Eve .
Very good food. True North Indian dishes. The best part of this restaurant is that food is prepared keeping NY crown in mind, by default it’s not spicy so if you like spicy just let them know. But even non spicy food is delicious. If you come at lunch and is non vegetarian then try non-veg Lunch thali. It’s awesome. Surprisingly there was mini rosogullas at the end of Thali 🙂.Forgot to mention by any chance if you are familiar or fond of Indian food at Oaktree road, edison,NJ and like to compare, let me tell you this place is 100 times better than the best restaurant there. A must try place. Price is also very reasonable. In short a Must try place
I was looking for something delicious and inexpensive for lunch, and I was pleasantly surprised with this restaurant! As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by multiple smiling hosts. I was seated immediately and I felt extremely taken care of (all staff looked at me every time they passed by to make sure I was doing well/had water, etc). The woman who seated me asked me how I was doing in a genuine way, which surprised me and made me very happy (most people ask because it is polite- she actually looked at me and smiled and waited for me to answer). She helped me choose delicious food, I am vegetarian and got the lunch special for $11.95. The samosas were amazing, and the saag paneer was delicious and they served me the best naan Ive ever had. Would highly recommend, Im definitely going back, and taking my with friends with me! Amazing food and prices- I took the rest home and got two meals for the price of one. The only downside was that I wish they packed my food for me- it would have been easier. Still, great restaurant if you want yummy Indian food!
Very good food, moderate price way way better service than another Indian restaurant nearby(we went to the Aahar restaurant before coming to Benaras restaurant. Got in to almost a fight because of the bad attitude, rude behavior of the manager who literally fought with the customers for stupid reasons , left that place & came here just a few yards away ) . Special thanks to the manager & great staff who was very friendly and polite. Keep it up and million thanks
Sorry, this is degraded drastically from good to bad. Eg. taste is so bad during my last visit. Taste cant be proved with photo, but look at one photo I uploaded, the freshness of the onions and green chillies.Starts with my one liner awesome indian restaurant in downtown areaAfter moving to WTC area, we have been looking for a good indian restaurant and finally we found it. Its again not that rich in spices, flavors but an avg spices used recipes which means the foods are not so masala mixed, rich flavored etc but little less and with excellent taste. Every dish comes in less quantity but excellent quality. We tried tikkas, kababs and other currys, all were pretty good. Special suggestion to all those who loves to eat very spicey, masala, flavored food then this is not the place or you may ask for spicy dish. Enjoy the food.
Two line summary of this place would be as follows — a highly overrated place run by rude management which makes 3-4 people sit on a table which is not big enough even for 2 people. Food especially breads are mostly stale!(Dear Mr. Owner - It was your manager who gave us the smallest possible table when we asked for a table for three. The restaurant wasn’t packed. As you can see in the attached picture the table next to ours was empty and remained so throughout our stay at the restaurant. We did request one of the servers to join the two tables but he politely declined!! (there were no other issues with the service of that particular server, though. Maybe its just that he didn’t want to go against the directives of the Manager).Your manager should learn the basics of restaurant management and more importantly the fact that he’s running a restaurant and not a shared auto or bus service.)
Fantastic authentic Indian food! A friend spoke very highly of Benares so I came on a Friday in the early evening to check it out. There were a few families and a few people sitting at the bar during happy hour, so we chose a space in the booths towards the back. The menu is quite expansive with different sections, and interestingly a vegan section as well. 2/3 of our menus were missing part of the insert, so make sure your menu is complete. We ordered the butter chicken which was the best Ive had so far in NYC. A lot of the ones Ive tried tasted more like chicken tikka, the chicken was too dry, or the sauce was just straight tomatoes. This one was proper butter chicken though, and the portion is enough to serve three people. Same with the bhindi masala, it was cooked well so that the okra doesnt shrivel and the spices were on point. We also ordered garlic naan and roti, and the butter chicken came with rice. For dessert, I ordered the Atom Bomb chocolate lava cake with rose ice cream. Unfortunately, the cake didnt have much lava but it was still warm and yummy with the ice cream.
The manager of this restaurant does not have manners to talk with customers. When we asked for some details, he was rude and said, you can go to other place. We were supposed to have 15 people and planning to have lunch but due to this kind of behavior, We wont recommend this place to none of our corporate group. I will try to give my reviews wherever its possible.
Im so glad we had a meal at this lovely restaurant! The regular indian dishes are elevated here! I appreciate how they use the variety of spices in the perfect proportions! We really liked the person Dee, who helped us make really good choices and served us so well. Thank you for such a pleasant dining experience!
Benares is probably one of the best Indian restaurants i have tried in recent times. Please do not miss the Malai Kofta and Atom Bomb ( yes you heard me Atom Bomb, Dessert Flavor explosion for your taste buds ! ). Anyone looking to have an awesome time watching Cricket games or just chill with your friends and family on any time during the week benares is the place to be. Kudos to the chefs and management team for making my experience a memorable one. Looking forward to being back when they roll out the Benares Brunch special.
I called to ask the restaurant if they had vegan options because I prefer calling ahead and making sure they actually do before going in. The man who answered the phone was so rude and impatient and basically told me to ask him my questions in person at the restaurant because he didn’t have time to answer them on the phone. Will not be going to the restaurant anymore because that’s not how you treat potential customers.
The tragic and unexpected loss of salaam Bombay left a desire to be filled. This restaurant exceeded my expectations. I have had lunch, which has a fantastic special, and dinner here. Both times, all dishes were enjoyable. I was especially impressed by the Rogan Josh. Highly recommended, fast service, great food and pleasant atmosphere.
Please DO NOT have a meal here if you value your health. The food comes with a lot of food colouring and lacks flavor. Upon checking with the manager-I was told that Americans like Indian food with lots of colour and hence artificial colour is added. Bland food/poor decor/bad service and poor hygiene. A wasted meal and evening in the Big Apple when there are so many amazing restaurants/bars to go to.
I dont know who posts these reviews, but the food was subpar at best, and it was all microwaved with a distinct taste of disappointment in my mouth with the panner tikka, and the dal makhani was okay at best. Naans were good though so thats the plus. Maybe I am used to Indian food from India with more flavor and am more harsh, but have had decent food in NY NJ area.
Staff was super friendly and personable. Really made sure I was having a great meal. Got their butter chicken extra spicy and bullet naan, would recommend for anyone who is a fan of good spicy Indian food. Hope they stick around for a long time so I can keep coming back!
We sat outside and one thing that bothered me was that there was trash beside where we were sitting so you could get a whiff of it sometimes. I would recommend they change their seating for the future. However I used a Pulsd deal and it was fantastic. Abundant amount of food for a great price including drinks and dessert. I got the chicken vindaloo which was spicy and flavorful- I was impressed as I am Indian so usually am wary of Indian restaurants. We also got the rosemary naan which was alright, the smell was great but the taste was just like regular naan. I also got cumin rice which was yummy, the lamp chops which were average (they were good but nothing amazing or unique), the saag paneer which was decent, and the chicken tikka which was more like butter chicken in my opinion. Desert was gulab jamuns which are great and a chocolate lava cake. The drinks were decent I would recommend getting the lassi-type drinks for something unique. The waiter was very nice and attentive which I appreciated. Overall it was a good place and I would recommend for people to have a family styled dinner there with lots of options !
I’m from the UK where we are spoiled with excellent Indian food. This is hands down the BEST Indian food I’ve had since I moved here nearly 30 years ago. We went for my fiancé’s birthday and just the food experience alone made it special. The vegetable biryani was incredible with amazing spices and just spicy enough. Not too much and not too little. The samosas were superb with perfect pastry and delicious side sauce. On top of that, the service was excellent. PS Gigantic portions enough for two more days at home. Highly highly recommended! And I’d gone with high expectations due to local recommendations.
Ive eaten Benares food on many occassions over a couple of years, while most restaurants quality go down over time, this is the exception where the quality goes up. My daughter is an incredibly picky eater and doesnt like eating Indian food out but she looks so forward to when she knows were going to eat Benares food. The meat is incredibly succulent and so well marinated, all the time. Ive never had a time where the food experience wasnt the 5 star.
The food was terribleI ordered lamb vindaloo the meat was old smelled foul and was like a piece of cardboardThey must not taste it before serving itI tried the chicken Sag as well and the chicken was dry and was very badThey must not care about it otherwise no restaurant owner would serve such bad quality food and keep a chef that cooks like thatYuk my stomach still hurts
This is a hidden gem in Manhattan. We had lunch here and the food was fantastic. A true gastronomic delight!! Flavors are authentic and each item we ordered was delicious. The entire menu is put together with care. The staff were extremely courteous and friendly. The ambience and decor is ethnic and tasteful. Overall it was a great experience. They have a branch in New Jersey and we have heard great things about it. Look forward to trying it too.
Amazing Indian food!! The only Indian restaurant we order from downtown! The staff is wonderful and the owner is fantastic and super attentive!! We had a bottomless brunch and the drinks are the best we have had in Manhattan. Highly recommended!! Also has a beautiful atmosphere🤩
Really good food and very good service.Definitely recommend the Dahi kebab.Chilli paneer was also super tasty though I wish it came with a mention of how spicy it is and the fact that it is semi gravy. Mains were well prepared and the sabzis are served with a side of rice.
Chicken with the marsala seasonings is AMAZING! The right amount of spice, heat; and the flavor is 10/10. The coconut rice was on point, very fresh and not greasy. Beautiful presentation. Great atmosphere inside the restaurant with a cozy bar area and a nice dining room in the back. Definitely a must-stop when youre in the neighborhood looking for the best Indian food!
Awesome, exquisite, delicious, and out-of-this world Indian food!!!!!! Banares catered our outdoor garden party this weekend, and the food and service was beyond our imagination or expectation for our 100+ guests. Waitstaff was nicely dressed and served appetizers -- mouth watering, succulent, and tender appetizers. Shrimps were HUGE and TENDER, mushrooms perfectly charred, salmon was amazing, chicken kabobs were extremely soft and tender marinated in a few different ways. Lamb chops simply melted in your mouth and were Spectacular!!!! Our guests thought that was all the food, until dinner arrived. Imagine having a Tandoor Oven in your garden and watching a Nepalese Chef cook your food while you watch. The various types of naan being cooked right before your eyes was a sight to behold and smell, and eat piping hot. We cannot wait to visit the restaurants in NY or NJ. Keep up the great work Benares, you made a whole lot of people VERY happy this weekend!!!!!!!
We recently had wedding and reception we catered food from Benaras. the service was horrible at the reception. The food did not arrive on the reception boat the time it should have. was two hours late. Due to the lost time, they did not serve all the items at the cocktail hours which was on contract. food was finished before reaching half the guest. Desert was put out earlier than it should have, and it was melted by the time guest started eating. the set up was bad. we should have two side buffet set up. they only did one side and line were getting longer for the food.THE EVENT MANAGER WAS TOTAL UNPROFESSIONAL. was shouting for the Bride to talk because she was late and looking for help from the Bride.Demanding Venmo her tip while she was messing up the event. ACCORDING THE OWNER, THE MANAGER WE HAD SUPPOSED TO BE THE BEST ONE.When I called the Owner, Mr. Bhatia he agreed that it was their fault and messed up our reception. HIS MANAGER DID NOT HANDLE IT CORRECT. the owner promised me to call back AFTER SPECKING WITH THE MANAGER BUT IM STILL WAITING AFTER THREE MESSAGES.So, be careful if you still like to use this place for your big day!By the way, food was good but service was HORRIBLE!! NOT ACCEPTABLE!!
My first time trying food from this restaurant, the owner was very friendly. I picked up the food and took it all the way to the Bronx for dinner. My fiancé and I loved our dinner, he had the goat punjabi and I had the chicken tikka - excellent. I will return for their lunch specials which a well priced for the amount of food it comes with and I would definitely carry food from here to the Bronx again.
We ordered multiple items. All with excellent unique flavors. Usually we order closer to our apartment but have always wanted to try them and today we did. It was worth it. This will be our new spot. Each entree came with a rice which wasn’t clear on menu so we ordered extra rice and made rice at home. Ha. Anyway, the butter chicken is excellent.
This Indian restaurant prepares memorable food. It is outstanding. Every dish I tasted was of the highest quality. The restaurant is understated making their excellent food all the more surprising. The outdoor restaurant shed is decorated with plants in a lovely sensitive way. The service is attentive and interested in their customers. Enjoy!
Third visit to this place. Last two times my experience was perfect. This time the service disappointed us and how. As much as I love the food here, I wouldnt recommend this place for dining in for the lack of quality service. Server was Kevin( as per the copy of the bill I have).Left a bitter taste in our mouth with his lack of courtesy and a very arrogant attitude. And sorry, a free round of tequila shots doesnt cut it.
Even 5 stars is not enough for Beneras. Our family’s all time favorite Indian restaurant. Management and food is too notch. They will never disappoint and if your food is not to your expectation let the manager on duty know they will never not take care of you. Keep it up beneras team.
The place is certainly nice. Seems more like a night time spot. There seemed to be a lot of employees there who cough a lot without covering their mouths. (not wait staff) A waiter took our order then clocked out without leaving a coworker to tend to us. The waitress there is who took initiative to come ask if weve ordered because we hadnt even received whats their complimentary appetizer even after 15 - 20 minutes of ordering. Then our food took nearly an hour and the place was basically empty. When our meals finally did come, wed not even received the actual appetizers we ordered, that came after the meal. This place gets their stars only because the food was actually good. Not good enough for the bad service.
I ordered for pickup , was waiting 10 minutes outside so I can keep social distance, but my order was on counter in front of me, they were busy serving in guest because they were not Asian and , secondly when I received order , no spoons, dinner fork and napkins , when I came back no response. Its awful and unprofessional. I can just say food quality is good but service need to upgrade. Hope they get motivation from feedback.
Their outdoor heated seating was perfect for safely celebrating my dads birthday. We ordered lamb chops, butter chicken, diwani handi, benares dal, beet root tikki, galouti kababs, Amritsari fish. Food was amazing and staff was extremely courteous and friendly! One of the best indian foods I have had in the city.
Amazing food, Fantastic Service, Friendly environment. Great Ambiance during normal times. Safe outdoor dining during COVID-19. Highly recommend the Dahi Kababs & Lamb Chops. Love supporting Family Owned Businesses with such hard working, caring people. Many delicious Vegetarian & Vegan options available.
I want to take the time and say a few good words about this place. I ordered something through seamless and my food was dropped at the lobby instead of getting delivered to my apartment. When I called the owner and told him my concerns he explained me that it was a third party delivery company, he apologized and even took the time to text me shortly after our conversation. So please don’t order from seamless but directly from their website or just call them.Ae far of the food- it was great! We got the chicken tikka masala. 10 stars!Highly recommended !
One of the best Indian food restaurants in New York. Everything we’ve ever ordered is amazing. The food is flavorful and high quality. The staff is also awesome. Friendly, fast, and they make an effort to get to know you if you’re a regular. If you’re craving good food Benares is a great choice.
Such a nice spot to come on a date or with family and friends I really like the vibe and set up for lunch dinner or an event!I’m quick to get heartburn but the food here was so good, I didn’t experience any heartburn due to the freshness and quality. I’m beyond pleased! The cauliflower app with the sauces was the best I’ve ever had. You can tell the quality of a meal when the sauces are just as great as the food! Main entrees were delicious as well.. the kofta is a must have! Drinks were also on point!Would definitely recommend! Got to me one of the owners such a pleasure & class act!
Overall rating - 3.5 out of 10I would give 5 out of 10 for ambience, 3 out of 10 for service.BEST PLACE TO SQUANDER your valuable time. This place does not deserve to provide enhancement to your valuable time. Being a professional individual working on wall street, I would advise not to step in this place to get your valuable time squandered and being treated by waiters as if you are one of them. They dont provide spoons at all. In the middle of dinner, they keep asking to take back unused spoons sitting on your table.Average with little congested sitting arrangements.I am an Indian and much familiar with all the dishes being offered in this menu. Here I believe chef is not aware of how those menu dishes are supposed to be prepared. We ordered three dishes and requested to make them spicy. They served us all of them with no spices and no salt at all. Vegetables in curry were cooked incomplete.Look for other better options to enjoy time and food.
Wowww ... Benares is the most amazing restaurant in all manhattan. Every time I eat there, the foods always surpass my expectations. They are so well prepared and delicious. The service is also 5 stars. The staffs pay attention to me. They are kind and friendly.I always recommend this restaurant to my family and friends.Guys, if you haven’t tried Benares yet, believe me, you’re missing big.Try it and you will see the difference.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
“Good honest And authentic Indian food”We tried Benares for the first time today and the food was great, freshly cooked very tasty and well presented. The waiters were attentive and service overall was excellent. The restaurant is well decorated With a touch of Indian music playing in the background which I loved lot. Overall a good meal and great value we will certainly be going back.
This place is a hidden gem. Do not be deceived by the outside appearance as you step through their doors. I assure you, you will enter an Indian food paradise. We had several dishes and each dish was an explosion of flavorful greatness in your mouth. Service is great and the staff were welcoming and friendly. The menu has a large variety from starters to main dishes. My personal favorite is the Smokey Chicken for starters and as the main dish, the Curry Shrimp is just heaven. You will not be disappointed.
I have been here many times over the years. I have even brought Indian friends here and they enjoyed it as well! The lunch menu allowed you to pick items from a couple categories to get the Prix Fix food. It was quite good with plenty of nan to use on the gravy from the main courses. Four of us were able to get good variety and eat family style.
We visited Benares during a trip to the city and left very impressed. The atmosphere was cozy and the staff was very friendly. The host was very involved and greeted every party by name as they arrived for their reservations. We started off with a bunch of different appetizers and every single one was tasty. The crab was seasoned perfectly and the scallops were cooked flawless. We also had the lamb chops along with several different items from the main course menu and everything was delicious!! If youre looking for authentic Indian food with a modern twist, Benares is the place to go. We will definitely be going back!
I decided to have dinner here around 8:30 PM before my movie on a Friday. I did not like the service much at this place. Me and my friend were not greeted by the host (he was using sign language for some reason) and were shown a table which was kind of shared with another guy despite plenty of tables being available . You will understand what I am talking about when you will visit the place. We decided to change the table ourselves. We ordered the Lychee Lover cocktail which was nothing like what was described on the drinks menu, butter chicken left my hands stained and had too much tomato puree in it, still tasty though. Service and food are not worth the prices, I’m sorry!
Im not Indian but I do like the cuisine, so when office colleagues who are from India asked if I wanted to go to lunch at Benares, I knew I was in for a treat. The restaurant looks formal but feels casual. Plenty of office workers were there, attracted by the Prix Fixe lunch menu of app & entree. It was busy when we arrived about 11:45-12, and the place looked clean and professional.I kept to a simple salad, and ordered Chicken Vindaloo. Everyones food looked delicious with different lamb, goat , chicken and fish smelling fantastic, along with vegetarian courses. Ive had Vindaloo at other places before and this tasted great but be warned its spicier than what I was expecting. My friends told me its supposed to be spicy but many restaurants tone it down for the American palate. It wasnt eye-watering, so I could enjoy it without problems.Everything was well coordinated and all were satisfied. I hope to go back soon.
Died & Went to Heaven! This food was so delicious. A friend and I came in for lunch and ended up taking them up on their lunch special. We got an appetizer, the entree, and a dessert. Worth it! All of this for around $16, so I cant complain. I wasnt left feeling bloated either, which Ill consider a testament of the quality of food we were consuming. Their iced tea is also super refreshing. You got to get in on this!

2022-06-08Great place, good food. Their chicken dishes are especially good, Malai kab and chicken 65. Misal pav is okay, it has chickpeas in it and is served with bread. The tipsy gulabo is great, perfect blend of lassi and alcohol. Overall,a good place to satisfy Indian food cravings.

2022-07-02We ordered dahi kebab which were nothing like dahi kebab but frozen cheese nuggets given to us and tasted disgustingWe ordered paneer tikka masala and ended up returning it as they gave us the wrong dish, which again tasted disgusting 🤮 the dal makhani was so salty and nowhere near to what actual makhani is. A lot of people have given this restaurant a 4+ rating, but if i had an option if have given a negative. They are nowhere near Indian restaurant standards.

2022-06-10We were 2 and ordered dahi kebab, malai kofta, 2 garlic naan and mango lassi. Everything was perfect and tasted so good. 1 garlic would be enough for us as after finishing 2 garlic naan, we couldn’t had rice.

2021-10-22Nice Indian Food Option in Manhattan Downtown. Manager was very friendly and assisted in reservation and setting up our team. This is one of our surprise dinner event for our manager, it turned out to be great location and food. Nice options for Veg and Non-Veg folks, definitely will recommend this hotel for the folks in the area.

2021-12-18Made reservations for Friday at 7pm. When we arrived they didn’t even check if we had reservations. The place was maybe half full. Around 8 it was packed. The food is very good and the portions are huge. I ended up taking home half of my entree. I think I would definitely go back here. The reason I’m not giving 4 or 5 stars is because service was incredibly slow. We had to wait about 15 minutes for anyone to take our drink order and after the food came out we didn’t get a water refill for probably an hour. We also had to chase someone down to bring us a check. I suppose there are worse things, at least we were not at all rushed to leave and could enjoy our meal. I noticed that many other tables had extremely long waits for drinks and appetizers so I was glad we got there “early” and that our food came out pretty quickly once we ordered. Perhaps this is solely related to being understaffed which I understand. The phone was also ringing off the hook and there were a ton of delivery orders being prepared so that also probably affected the service for diners. It didn’t ruin my experience. Food was really really good. I will definitely be back!

2022-06-23A pretty good deal for a work day lunch especially for the area. This is the most home-y Indian food I’ve had in the city so far. Even the rice and naan tasted less oily or seasoned compared to other restaurants. The saag paneer and chicken tikka masala were ok, but the papdi chaat was pretty good! Mango lassi was too thick though it was almost impossible to drink😅 Overall I think the cleanliness and service can also use some improvement and it will become a nice option for lunch near the office!

2022-06-05The food was decent but not special. It tended to be on the blander and milder side, and the flavors were rather generic. That being said, everything was good.We had great service and our server was paying a lot of attention to our experience.

2022-06-26Was recommended by one of my friends but the food didn’t turn out to be good enough. Foods were unnecessarily made spicy. Specifically the non-veg curries - andhra chicken and saag chicken. The veg items were decent - Dal Makhani, Diwani Handi & Malai Kofta. Will not recommend and will not visit again.
