A bit of old New York vibe, decor is rock n roll with guitars,, keyboards and other instruments hung on ceiling and walls. Food is very good, cant beat the pizza, good size and side salad make a perfect meal, staff is very attentive. Well priced too, great casual dining experience
It is a mix of German and Italian food which I found interesting. I had a German entree which was very good! My Italian dessert was also good. Service was ok, could have been better but not terrible. They had a singer/keyboard player and guitarist. It was a very nice evening and would definitely return.
We ordered cocktails that were very bad to taste . I only took one sip of my drink and my boyfriend just finished his drink somehow cause we were paying for it. The waitress had an attitude problem, maybe thought of herself as too good to be working as a waitress but wasnt qualified enough to find a better employment. The shrimps were rubbery and pasta was tasteless plus there was a hair at the bottom of the plates..yikes ! On a Thursday @ uppee west side this place was almost empty that should have been indicative of the how bad this place is. There are plenty other good Italians restaurants that are worthy of your money. Avoid this one !
Amazing food and amazing people! Giga (gee-ga) and Vladimir were so welcoming! We could tell from the moment we sat down the hospitality was top notch and the care for us to have a delicious and enjoyable meal was top priority. The veal dumpling special was amazing! There was not a single dish we had (lasagna, mushroom pasta, Sicilian gnocchi, sausage linguini, pretzel, perogis) that we could have stop raving about. The co-owner Vlado played the piano and sang (being a former rockstar from abroad) while Giga tended to our table to make sure we were comfortable.Youd be missing a diamond in the rough if you didnt come to this establishment!Edit : went back again on 4/2 and tried the pizza, wow in the best way possible! The pizza is cracker thin, as a group we tried 3- cheese, pepperoni and sautéed onions and crumbled sausage. While they were all great it was a toss up - the pepperoni had the best crisp and crunch. However, the sausage and onion pizza had the best flavor, it was unbelievable, truly. I highly highly recommend this spot for pizza even if you just happen to pop in for a quick pie. Woman owned and operated!
Absolutely beautiful! Out of the whole two weeks we have been here, having eaten out every night - this was the best meal weve had. So good in fact that we returned for our last evening. The first time round I ordered the specialty small rib which was cooked to perfection, it melted in my mouth and the sauce was beautiful, unfortunatley I finished the sauce before the meat. Luckily this didnt matter because without asking, the chef (maybe the owner? A white haired gentleman) had seen I was enjoying it and proceeded to bring me more sauce. And I cannot tell you enough how good this meal was. And again with the last night another beautiful meal cooked perfectly with beautiful flavours. The service in this restaurant is brilliant! The people that work there clearly have a passion for it and everyone is so welcoming, which being in such a big city it can be quite daunting so it was such a nice change. After going on a bit too long, all I can say is I highly recommend Bettola if you are ever in the area. Great people, great food and an even better experience. I for one cannot wait for our next visit.
My new favorite restaurant. I had the fresh home made gnocchi with pesto sauce and it touched my soul. The service was great, the prices were modest and the food was fresh and served hot. So many delicious choices on menu made it difficult to choose. Will definitely be back to try other dishes for sure.
Great little place all the musical instruments hanging warms up the decor. Food was excellent as well as the staff. I had the sausage fettuccini and was very flavorful and pasta cooked perfect. A great restaurant. The curly shrimp in the garlic chili sauce was heavenly
Have walked past here countless times over the years and we finally visited. Weve been missing out! Very tasty vegetarian dish of zucchini noodles and whole wheat pasta with garlic oil, spinach and pignoli nuts. My husband had the sausage and fettuccine dish and enjoyed it. Shared an app of asparagus and mushrooms, yum! Very reasonable prices, casual atmosphere, friendly service, live music. Well definitely be back - he wants to try my dish and I saw half a dozen other things Id like to try.
How rude was the restaurant! My husband and I walked into the restaurant at about 9:30 pm. As far as Manhattan time goes, it was not late. The restaurant was empty with just a few tables filled. We loved it at first because it was a relaxing atmosphere. When asked for bread, the server unapologetically said they ran out. The pasta was supposed to be fresh but tasted like dry pasta. Before the hour was over, tables were cleared up and chairs were stacked up around us. A relaxing evening went into the toilet. Our server left the restaurant without letting us know. We were asked by chef and perhaps the owner and then later on by a server to move to the other side of the restaurant so they could clean. The other side had a table of guests who appeared to the chefs friends. They were totally undisturbed.
This place calls itself a rock and roll Italian restaurant. I didnt know that until sitting down and looking at the menu but still dont know what that means.Walked in and they were playing some soft unobtrusive music.Waitress couldnt answer questions about menu ingredients without going back to kitchen.Pizza was fine, surf and turf was very good. Ordered the bolognese and it was just plain weird. Maybe had a big dose of cinnamon in the sauce? Dont order it if you are expecting a normal bolognese. Lasagna also had strange flavorings. When we were just about to leave at around 8pm they cranked up the music pretty loud and it was jazz - not rock and roll as youd expect. Probably would have immediately walked out if music were playing that loud when we walked in.Also for winter time there isnt a good buffer between the outside air and the restaurant so if you are sitting near the doorway expect to get a blast of cold air every time the door opens or closes.
They were overall very tasty and worked us in after my daughter Amanda finished the marathon. There was only one blip, Amandas sister Vanessa ordered marinara sauce instead of the cream sauce, she has UC and needs to be dairy and gluten free but the server told us the cook was too busy to change her order because of the marathon crowd. Then a manager or owner spotted this and was very helpful with correcting this error and Vanessa really enjoyed her replacement meal.
I have been coming to this restaurant for several years and I have never been disappointed. The food is outstanding as is the service, and the atmosphere is intimate and relaxing. I was thrilled to find the quality of all as good as ever on my most recent visit, and I plan to arrange for some of their wonderful pasta to be delivered to a friend in town who doesnt get out much. Its the best.
Quaint little restaurant, easy to find from our hotel. Great food, great atmosphere - dark, mellow, quiet. Calamari salad was delicious so was the wine and their bread was really good too. Was going to order pasta but when I noticed that the NY Steak strip had a truffle sauce, there was just no way I could pass that up! It was so good! I would have like to have tried the pasta though. Next time :)
Bettola is a wonderful restaurant. My family has been enjoying the restaurant’s food, atmosphere and friendly staff for years. The owners are some of the best, hardest working people we’ve had the honor and pleasure of knowing. What some negative reviewers may not realize ... is how significantly projecting their own bad day or insecurities impacts small business owners. Please, think for a minute before you write a bad review. Two people gave a 1 star review to Bettola and accused them of being racist for being asked to return after the restaurant’s regularly scheduled ~4-5pm break. Did you consider that maybe the chef and staff who work very hard need a short break in their 12 hour work day —instead of focusing on the color of your skin? Do you realize the impact of your unfair, bad reviews on someone’s livelihood? Do you realize that they employ a multi-cultural staff and are themselves naturalized citizens?
First of all, I ordered the fettuccine that comes with mushrooms and spinach (Im vegetarian). I was NOT expecting to get some watery, bland pasta with a couple of spinach leaves and mushrooms on top. I couldnt accept it and had to return it. I ordered some pizza instead and was so underwhelmed. The food here is on the bland side. Im giving it 2 stars because the waiter was so nice and because the chef came outside to ask what was wrong with the food (although, I could tell he was mad that I returned it). If youre going to charge $15 a plate, you better make it worth $15.
Pizzas were awful. Ham was old and tasteless and the artichokes were old and hard. Had to pick everything off and eat the base basically. We also did not get a bread basket.***In response to owner’s comments: We ate Less than half of what we ordered. You should check with your staff who boxed them. Happy to tell you where the rest ended up. Never Has to ask for bread basket in a pizza joint before. You charge the same amount for your food as many other pizza joints on the UWS but the quality is lacking. They are also much better at taking feedback.********ThaResponse from the owner16 hours agoMadam our pizzas are great and customers love them. You had ordered three pizzas for your family of three and finished it all. We always use fresh ingredients. If you would let us know that you did not like some of the ingredients on Quattro Stagioni we would change it for something else. When everyone at the table orders pizza, we do not serve a bread basket, but again if you would ask for some bread we would gladly bring it to your table.
We love Bettola! The food is consistenly delicious. We order take out and we dine in. Service is wonderful and attentive- always. Wine selection is fabulous. Prices are very fair. Atmosphere is cozy enough for a date yet casual enough for a family meal and weve been there for both. Cant say enough.
I was a little underwhelmed - tables are extremely close together, even more so than at other NYC restaurants, so no private conversation. Would have been worth it if the food was outstanding, but it wasnt. I ordered the Fantastico - filet over pasta - and expected melt in your mouth beef, but got small strips of chewy meat. Not terrible, but not for a $100 per couple meal.
Found it after leaving the American Museum of Natural History with family. Great basic Italian food with flair, delicious desserts, excellent service, good atmosphere, reasonably priced bottle of Italian wine, and no problem with a 5 year old. All of that rates a great review. Certainly recommend this restaurant.
I’ve never had bad Italian food. Never. Until now. They gave wheat bread cut in half, the lump crab cake was made up of artificial crab meat that wasn’t cooked fully, and the shrimp diavlo had pasta that stuck together! I had to eat it with a knife. The shrimp was at least fresh, but my stomach is already turning and I haven’t even left yet. There are several restaurant options close by; there’s no reason to come here at all!
I live right above Bettola, so I consider myself somewhat of an expert. The staff is friendly, and the prices are reasonable. But, you should definitely stick to the basics when ordering. You cannot go wrong with their pizza. Its from a wood-burning oven and is delicious. You can go wrong, as I discovered the other night, by ordering the scallops off the specials menu. The menu declared that it was Voted No.1 in New York, but it conspicuously did not say by whom. Ugh, they were awful. Other than the pizza, the pasta bolognese is to die for, and my absolute favorite dish is the fettuccine with peas, although the pasta with broccoli rabe and sausage is good, too. Again, stick with traditional Italian fare, and youll have a lovely meal.
Worst Italian food I’ve ever ordered! The food arrived cold, the portion was huge but the food itself was very bland. Also, the meat sauce was chunky with tomatoes instead of meat. Definitely not worth the expense. My order arrived with no cutlery and was very cold for a restaurant only 2 blocks away.
To start, the waitress didnt know what kind of wine the house wine was. I ordered the gnocchi which came with a tomato sauce that was a thicker version of tomato soup. The only thing I could do for flavor was to add the Parmesan cheese they had which was essentially Kraft from a can. Not too far off from chef boyardee. Hopefully there was a different cook for Labor Day weekend and they are better the rest of the year.
Bettola was great. My lasagna was excellent; it was more northern Italian style with Bechamel sauce and a good ragu bolognese. My wife had linguini with clams also excellent with in the shell littleneck clams which for us midwesterners is a treat. We also got a margherita pizza to go which was a very good neopolitan style pizza. Plus the atmosphere was really nice. The chef owner is a former Slovakian rocker who has his multiple gold records on the wall. He greeted us personally and is a warm engaging guy. We will be back.
I didnt like the food at all - neither the beets salad nor shrimp scampi. My bff had Fantastico - marinated filet mignon pasta..in fact boiled beef and home made pasta , thats what it really was. My pasta was bunch of fettuccine floating in water, 5 shrimp tasted like seaweed - everything boiled, nothing was grilled (well, tbh it doesnt say grilled in menu, I get it, but i didnt expect my pasta to arrive with no sauce, just water). I have never returned food in Italian restaurant, its my favorite. But there is always a first time.. also, i got a glass of white wine for $12 that I couldnt even finish because i left hungry - people tend to order wine for the dish, you dont just drink it if youre starving. They didnt include my so-called pasta to the bill, but glass of wine was there- I guess I should have just returned it with Shrimp Scampi. Also, the bill had Cesar Salad instead of Beets Salad, I dont know if there is a price difference but whatever.. they just tend to mix up the orders i think - we got glass of red wine instead of white (changed it), got cesar salad instead of beets (changed it), but anyway cesar salad made its way to the bill..whatever, I just wanted to leave and have my dinner elsewhere. The bill was $63.P.S. The funny part was when the waitress asked if we wanted a desert.. IM STARVING!!! WHAT DESSERT???Answer to the owner: I’m not going to google any recipes when im in the restaurant- I wanted pasta with shrimp. Advise: if guests have to google the menu that means it is confusing and not easy to understand- change it
Food was average but the service was absolutely horrible. God forbid you want to split a ticket. Apparently they cannot do math because first off they forced us to mark off the food we ordered (which I did) then i was told to do the math to split the ticket because she is not going to do it (quote from servers competent coworker). Then after that, they added a FORCED gratuity thats more than this lazy idiot of a server deserves. DO NOT GO HERE. If you want bad service, average food, and a forced gratuity because of stupid waitresses, then you are in the right place.
This place is fantastic! Im a native and LOVE pasta. My fiance and I like to try new places but always come back here. In fact, weve been coming here for 4 years now! They say you can tell how good an italian restaurant is by is bolognese sauce - and if that is true - then this place is the best. The pasta is always al dente, and every dish we have ever had here has been delicious.
A very affordable place to eat in New York. We were 8 people and we ate for less than 200 dollars. The food (we ordered pizza and pasta, the pizza was baked in a stone oven) was very good, and they brought us some bread with oil to accompany it.The service was very friendly (they kept an eye on us all the time to refill our water glasses) and also spoke Spanish. The place is small but very cozy, and they have live music. 10/10, highly recommended :)
Hi, Im an Italian girl, I went to this restaurant by accident.I must say that I was pleasantly surprised, tasty food with quality products served in a welcoming atmosphere. In the evening several people performed, singing to the sound of the guitar ... an absolutely recommended place, with honest prices!

2021-10-26Fantastic German food - delicate, light and flavorful. This is just like what I had in Germany, not the heavy, Americanized stuff normally found stateside. Great pizza, too. The owners are charming and warm. Dont miss the live music!

2022-01-16In short, great place! We (family of 5, my wife and me and our 3 kids: 17, 15: 11) had dinner here at new year’s eve 2022 and we had a great time (all of us agree on that)! Mind you, it is hard to find a place that is acceptable to both parents AND all the kids). Both owners (Vlado & Giga) are very kind and warm persons, they make you feel at home right away. The place is perfectly decorated if you’re into compact and warm spaces, live music and positive attitude. Because it was new year’s eve I had some questions to be sure we picked a nice place, and Vlado was very kind (and patient) in communicating with me via email. The German / Italian combo worked out perfectly for us. The quality of the food was also perfect, I for one have never had a better schnitzel. But everyone of us was very satisfied, about the food quality, quantity and (to cut it short) Bettola-vibe. The price (which is only the parents concern) was good, too.I definitely recommend this place and whenever I am in New York, I will be sure to return to Bettola.

2022-04-16Coming from Spain I can say I know when the food is good or bad. In this place you will find really good food. I had an amazing pepperoni pizza and tried other plated from the people that came with meThe local is very well decorated and its really comfy. Music is the main protagonist and theres also live music. The staff was kind, attentive and was able to communicate both in Spanish and English (maybe even German and Italian) so no linguistic barriers. It was GREAT!
