Beyond Van Gogh Buffalo in Buffalo
A great event to see art in a different way. The exhibit has three rooms where the first is information about van Gogh and the second is a moving light show of backgrounds of his paintings. The third is the main room which is a really large room with projections of his works in motion and in different views on the walls and floor. You are literally in the paintings and seeing them from different perspectives. The event is a little pricey but worth it as it is a once in a lifetime experience.
Beyond Van Gogh claims to be 3 rooms. Room 1 is the part you are walking thru, with print/info (no images) on the walls. This could have been printed on an 8.5x11 piece of paper. Room 2 is the entrance to the projection room. This room has moving projections but is really just a doorway. Room 3 is the Projection Room, aka Beyond Van Gogh Show in which you can sit on the floor or a bench and watch projections of Van Gogh art. This does not include slick transitions, 3D feels or the feel of rain, like some other versions of this traveling/franchise style show display. It is interesting to watch. There is no Interactive Education section. The gift shop is well stocked compared to other cities and the posters they are selling do not have their logo printed huge, over the image. The gift shop also has a Starry Night Selfie Booth which also was more fun than the projection room. If you are in Western NY, you should check this out but do not let it keep you from viewing it in other cities that may have much better versions. THE VENUE... This is in a temp frame building in which they do not let you share their employee restrooms &/or outhouses. They instead ask you to walk across the parking lot, into the mall, to find a bathroom, even if you are disabled. PHOTOS... I uploaded two photos from the store because it was more interesting than how the images were displayed in the projection room.
I now more fully appreciate the vision and talent of Van Gogh and his life experiences. The colors and projections were especially vivid and created a totally enveloping experience. The ticketing was somewhat misleading though; you had to order online only, and a $10+ fee was added per ticket. Why wasnt this disclosed with the ticket prices?
$50 for what… wow I can’t believe people are still going to this. It was very disappointing and underwhelming. I think for $10-$20 it would have been subpar, but to charge $50 was absurd. I only gave it two stares because it is something new and different in the area. it is time to pack up this eye sore and go scam more residence out of there money else where.SAVE YOUR MONEY
Unbelievably beautiful; you will be in awe the entire time!! I had tears in my eyes. This is the best humanity can offer humanity. Yes it’s that good! It is worth every single penny and then some (I am retired and cheap). I felt very safe inside a huge tent and not that many people in there at once. I’m not even showing my husband any video bc I want him to experience like I did. Words cannot adequately describe. So much more to say but this is enough.
Unfortunately, the staff is very deceitful and doesnt share that there are only two rooms. If you make a wrong turn by mistake the staff will rudely become confrontational, accuse you of things and call you names. Im heartbroken that we were not able to fully experience the brilliance of Van Gogh due to the angry, dismissive staff. Would not recommend for any art lovers --best to enjoy art at the good old Knox.
Highly enjoyable experience. There are several rooms one goes through, and the final 2 rooms are highly digitized. It was a very trippy experience, even for a stone cold sober person, but in a very good way. This show could not have been produced 10 years ago. It is amazing how remarkably creative minds, coupled with state of the art technology, can produce such an original experience based on art from a long dead painter.
We expected a lot more for $40/ person. Horrible customer service inside the exhibit. Staff were very rude about masks, even though we were 100+ feet away from any other people. Additionally, the projectors were blurry and it was difficult to read the script inside the first room. We left with headaches from the whole experience. Do not recommend!
It was okay. The exhibit constitutes three rooms. The first room is like postcards with Van Gogh quotes. The second room which is called the waterfall, one is meant to spend 5 minutes there, where as for me, I just thought it was a hallway to leave from one place to another. The third room was large. However it didnt say this is a 30-minute room. If you didnt know that things change, you can be done in 90 seconds. The graphics on the wall and floor change. Take the time to see the whole display through to same art display where you came into the room.Just when you think theres one more room to look at, you find out it is the gift shop, where a lanyard is $11.99 and a puzzle is $59.99.Since we have seen the real masterpieces, projected images didnt quite do it for us.The highlight of the exhibit was the people we spoke with.If you ask, the workers will bring chairs for you to sit on , if you are disabled or elderly, but you must ask. Workers will also take photos for you. Nice perk.NOTE: My cane tip kept slipping on the floor tiles.ALSO: Before you exit the building, there is a set-up prop for photos.
This is a perfect place for kids to be emersed in art. My kid was having so much fun in the exhibit. Unfortunately, fun for children is not allowed. I was told numerous times to tell my child to shut up and have her stop running around. Sorry she was really enjoying herself. And if you want to buy something in the gift shop, good luck prying the workers from their phones. This is perfect for people looking to be lulled to sleep thinking theyre engaging in a high art experience.
I asked about the mask mandate. They didn’t like my questions and said I was offensive and hurtful and not welcome. I asked for a refund and they said I would have to go through a website and a refund was unlikely. I asked to speak to a manager who let us in. Shortly after i was approached by an employee who said I should be ashamed, leave, and go vote for Trump. Had a terrible experience and would not recommend.
The staff, particularly the manager, we’re extremely rude and inconsiderate from the very beginning. We made the mistake of making a wrong turn into the conveniently placed gift shop, tried to re-enter the exhibit and were forced to leave. This was a complete waste of time and money and I place soul blame on the employees who were, again, extremely rude.
If you have 2 hours and $40/person to spare, it would be a good idea to read up on Van Gogh and his art before visiting. Quotes mostly from his letters to his brother shine a light on his life before 2 digitally animated shows make you feel as if you are in one of his paintings.
The exhibit itself was absolutely amazing, a really creative way to bring van Gogh’s work to life. The presentation was very mesmerizing and each room was captivating. The gift shop is a bit pricey but some cool souvenirs there. My only issue was with the amount of people let in at a time. We were told that a certain amount of people would be let in and that everyone had a certain amount of time inside, which would allow for spacing between groups. However all employees upon arrival said we had as long as we wanted, which was great for viewing but resulted in overcrowding especially in the 3rd room. The amount of people walking around and being in the way of pictures and visibility of the graphics unfortunately did hinder my enjoyment a bit, I wish they did space out groups a little better so that you have more room to breathe and enjoy the art without having to reach around people for a photo or feel cramped in. I also had an issue with one employee that told us we were not allowed to sit on the floor without telling us why, when many other people also were and were not told to stop. There were only so many benches and we were not in anyone’s way, and the floor was part of the immersive experience so I thought it was odd to not explain why we couldn’t sit there.
Show is great- cerebral presentation at the beginning with a some quotes and excerpts of his life. Second is a room with 3 projectors displaying liquid graphics. Lastly, the large room with a loop video with his artwork. Beautiful artwork, and crafters of the show are certainly artful as 40 bucks for a lightshow could be pushing it. 10/10 great show, but such a low value considering price. Also, dont get tickets unless you know you wont cancel. They have zero customer service. As a side, they probably make a few times Van Goghs total net worth a day 🤑 poor guy
Unfortunately, I have to put one star. My girlfriend and I had bought tickets way in advance for our one year. When the day came, we were driving from rochester and my car had broken down. There was no indication that this would even happen considering it’s a great car in great condition. We had to wait for help and in the meantime I reached out to the company to see if we could switch dates or do something so we wouldn’t lose out on +$100. Didn’t even mention a refund because we knew that was pushing it. They responded the next day in a rude manner & totally disregarded anything we had to say. We were super bummed but it just shows how not worth it this “experience” wouldve been. Don’t waste your time and money.
We were scheduled to go to this exhibit as a family (about ten of us) and were contacted by the venue that we had to reschedule because they were not prepared of ready! We picked another date but shortly after found out that we have a religious obligation that day. We contacted the venue to see if we could change the date as we were kind of enough to accommodate them! They told us we could not. This is very disappointing as there are SEVERAL open spots and dates for us to pick to reschedule. Why can you show the same courtesy to us that we did to you when you had us change our intial dates!!?? It took a lot of preparation and time to get a time that worked for everyone and YOU HAD US CHANGE OUR INITIAL DATE! We are schedule to go next Saturday and it would be nice if someone contacted us to get this resolved!
Would have liked to see this - booked my tickets way in advance. Unfortunately, sometimes plans change - but they would not allow us to book a new time, or go standby, or get a refund, even though there were many time slots open in the coming days. VERY disappointing customer service.
Awful. This is exhibited in a tent so its subjected to weather. There was a light breeze outside which was slightly rattling the structure and therefore shaking the projectors which for some reason werent secured very tightly. The images were shaking like crazy. This also interfered with some of the mapping. Nauseating. Avoid this disaster.

2022-01-10Really well done experience. Theyre not super strict about timing. We had tickets for 8:15 PM but we were early (around 7 PM). They let us in anyways. I think the time thing is a way for them to control crowds (and maybe Covid). If they arent super busy and can maintain safe distancing, theyll probably let you in if you show up early. I dont know if its the same story if youre late. The technology is flawless and the experience takes you out of the real world for a little while. They distill his history into digestible paragraphs to read prior to going into the main gallery where the wow happens. Staff was super pleasant and the place oozed civility. A great break from getting yelled at in a convenience store or flipped off on the highway.

2022-02-09This was an absolutely wonderful experience. I took my two daughters with me (one whos an artist, the other is not) and they were both amazed. When they say immersive they mean it and it truly pulls you into another more fantastical world youll never want to leave. Worth every penny. If you can do it, even if youre not very into art, I highly recommend it.

2021-12-03It far exceeded my expectations. At best I was a casual fan. My mother has always loved his paintings. The display was one hour long, we stayed for two. Just beautiful

2021-12-23Certainly not what we expected. We brought our infant and he had the time of his life. We also made some family photo moments and just stunning visuals anyone who is alive would enjoyPricing is ouch.. but where else can you see something like that in Buffalo or surrounding areas? No where. Pay the $50. Spend few hours there. Its very cool. Kid and elderly friendly (benches). No restroom. Go before entering as there is no re-entry.

2021-09-23Very unique and multi sensory experience. I love Van Gogh but this is something special for everyone to try.Starting off you felt like you got to know Vincent a little personally. The letters he wrote to his brother Theo offered a glimpse into him as a person and offered a look into their relationship. The way the letters were displayed and the exhibition itself was one of a kind. After there is a bit of a break to refresh yourself and your senses. The main room was like nothing I’ve seen before. It was a giant tent with projections on every surface with music. His paintings literally came to life and moved. You need to see this for yourself so I won’t say much more. I would absolutely recommend everyone go and check this out before it moves on as it’s a limited engagement. You need advance sale tickets. I believe the weekday tickets are a little cheaper and it should be less crowded. I would suggest having at least an hour to visit. You need to wear a mask inside the exhibit.

2021-12-29A wonderful experience. Strolling past some displays and information at the beginning, and then entering into an immersive version, surrounded by projections of masterpieces and beautiful transitions.

2021-10-12The exhibit does such a good job preparing you for the scale of the experience. Threading through the first sections gives you a hint of the size of it and gives you a taste of the motion. When you finally enter the main room youre ready. The space is superbly done. The only thing that detracted at all was the slight movement of some of the projectors due to the wind on the day we were there. The motion artists have done some of the best work Ive ever seen in this type of medium. Its not just clever tricks either. The flow of the visuals and the music program brought me a much better insight into the art and the artist than I got in years of university courses. At one point I was nearly moved to tears and had to stay through for a second loop to see if it happened again. (It did.) DO NOT MISS THIS!

2021-09-19A really cool and unique experience. Certainly the most impressive thing Ive seen in a parking lot. It is really well put together and immersive. Although it was pretty expensive, it is certainly something you dont see every day.

2021-08-28Oh my goodness this was amazing. A simple yet extremely informative look at one of our greatest artist. Housed in a large tent it was quite an experience. Honestly it made me weep a little bit.
