This is a great place to have a picnic, or go for a short hike, or go for a longer hike along the lake and back into the woods. The trails are pretty well marked and the hike is pretty flat and easy making it a good destination for all types of people. the only thing is that in the rainy times the entrance to the trails are really hard to get through because its like a pond and you have to cut up to the left to get around.
Beautiful hike in the forest that comes out along the water. Lots of kayakers. We were looking for a beginners hike with a nice view and this was perfect. Yellow trail is 2.4 miles. Very well marked and easy to follow. Just be careful not to trip since there are some rocky parts. So peaceful. Definitely work a visit!
Camping by Onteora Lake is excellent. This is real Catskill camping. 4 official natural campsites, posted, with fire ring. Camping in the forest follows NY camping rules: No camping within 150 feet of another campsite, a trail or road, or a water feature. Easy parking, 2 lots; parking lot by lake is closed in the winter. During the summer, portapotty available in parking lot. Lake allows boating, kayaking and fishing. Handicapped fishing platform available. Nice trails. They allow mountain bikes here too! Problems: Copperhead snakes along the edges of the lake; and, lots of poison ivy by campsites 1, 2, and 3. (Campsite 4 is free of poison ivy. Its the farthest from the parking lot, down the access road that turns into a trail.)
Great yellow loop trail about 3 miles with minimal elevation change takes you past lake Onteora and a second lake that has a beaver lodge. Extended hikes are available by continuing on the red trail and connects with the blue trail.Beautiful woods paths through varied forests and marshy areas.Trailhead is on rt 28 just past Morley hill road westbound.
The 2017 Fishing season was a blast at the lake! I had 9 visits for 5-8 hours of multi-species angling each visit! I caught Bluegil, Black Croppie and Largemouth Bass. The bluegil and croppie can be fun for the kids right at the picnic bench areas. Walk about 5 minutes down trail and fish the pads on the end of the lake for the bass. Lots of people bring their dogs out and hike the trail. So if youre looking for peaceful fishing, honestly stick near the benches because everyone just walked toward the trails.

2020-11-14Really nice hiking trails, and this park keeps getting larger as parcels of land are added. The beginner yellow loop is a little long for younger kids at 2.7 miles, but it is within reach. Please remember to bring a bag to pick up trash. Its a pack in pack out site, but there is some trash that has been left behind.

2021-05-20Lake is beautiful, fishing good.If you enjoy kayaking or canoeing its great for that, although there is no designated launch area. Trails are a little Rockey if you are even a little challenge bad knees etc. can be a tad difficult.

2019-02-20A wonderful collection of trails for hiking and mountain biking. At some areas it is a bit rocky and should be approached with caution. In my inattention, I have crashed here and left some blood, but it was my inexperience and certainly not the trail. In addition, OSI, Open Space Institute, has recently purchased (2019) a large tract of land adjacent to the Bluestone Forest and will be building more trails to the east. Hopefully there will be a connection to the nearby Jockey Hill trails.
