I went to the Book Club for the first time last night and what a great place. A book store with a bar, snacks and a great vibe. Love it! I went for a reading hosted by the East Village Wordsmiths and it was a great event. I hope this becomes a regular happening at this venue. Thank you Book Club!
This place is so lovely. So many seating options, comfortable space, clean and sufficient bathrooms, really kind staff, mostly chill patrons reading or quietly chatting. Books, obviously. Alcohol AND coffees. Its my dream place IN REALITY. I could live here (can I??).
They have a limited number of outlets, so its best to come with a charged laptop if you plan on spending a large portion of your workday there. I had my laptop plugged into an outlet that they typically use for a lamp, and an employee yanked my charger out and threw it onto the ground saying Im sorry but we need this for the lamp, and then walked away from me to shelf books before I could say anything. While I understand that they are dealing with limited outlets, it is rude to unplug someones device without having a conversation first. This employee (not the barista) could have told me their charging policy, and then gave me a chance to save my work so I could unplug my device myself. I could have lost all my work if my battery were 10% lower. Besides that negative experience, its a calm environment with good coffee.
Walked in and the place is super cute, cozy, and spacious. Loved it. BUT thats where it all changed....The barista was rude upon entry. I asked for the Wifi as its known to be a working space. She asked if I was actually planning to order, which I was but was awaiting my friend to arrive prior to placing my order. She clearly didnt believe me because she said are you really going to order? making me feel guilty for being polite and waiting for a friend...She reluctantly told me the wifi password. I couldnt hear her the first time as she mumbled it...so I nervously asked again...mumbles...Wifi password wasnt working because I couldnt hear her properly.Once my friend arrived, she was still full of attitude so we chose to leave.I hoped the energy from staff would be the same as the good vibes of the place. We went to unwind and get work done and left frustrated...Mentioned it to a friend who was a frequent visitor, and she noted she also had a negative interaction with her and doesnt go back nearly as often.Would love to come back here if she is no longer there and filling the place with her negativity.
Came during quarantine and had almost the entire place to myself. There’s a lovely parklet out front and a wonderful back garden. The book selection is curated and the space is easy to browse while staying socially distant. Books, Beer, wine, coffee... basically all you need to be happy! They also have a restroom 👍Can’t wait to come back.
I love supporting indie / small bookstores but had a mediocre trip to book club. The woman who helped me at the cashier was unfortunately pretty rude and totally made me want to leave the space. The coffee is definitely pricey but not unlike other east village shops. Wish I had a better experience!
Went here on a random Sunday afternoon. Place is small but very nice. Part bookstore part Cafe, and after 7pm part bar. I walked in with my friend, we both bought match lattes which were delicious. Prices are about average for boutique coffee shops in East Village. Seating is minimal and tough to get but we waited for some chairs to open up and sitting in that Cafe was so relaxing. I loved it. Low music playing over the speakers that you can hear but isnt too distracting. You can talk to whoever you go with or I saw some others just reading or typing on their laptops. I am absolutely going back on my own.
Great concept and lovely space, however really small and often filled up with people working on their laptops for hours. Theres some outside seating on the street/backyard, but neither offer heating during the winter months. They offer a selection of wines, coffees, and teas. Beyond a coffee/wine shop that sells books, they also have live events that you can go to.
Best place to cruise other literary gorgeous bookish folx, pick up the latest greatest new novel, drink an amazing latte, lambrusco or hot cocoa and fight with strangers and the barista over Hanya Yanagahara. (Im a big fan of A Little Life) The baristas and staff are all super well read, engaging, funny and kind people and I literally would move in if they had room for me and my cats. One of my favorite cafe hangouts in the city.
I hate having to say this but given how nice and vibey this place is- being a cafe/bar and bookstore and all- the manager Nat(e) doesn’t make it a welcoming experience at all.I’ve been stopping by this place to work or read or chat with friends for months now. Sometimes stopping by multiple times a day. But now I no longer feel welcome here. Nat(stout guy with glasses) has been singling me out telling me to purchase something or leave. He doesn’t know whether I’ve already purchased and consumed a beverage, he’d just rather have another customer seated where I am (very discriminatory). The first time he did it I found it rude but understood because it was a full house (even tho people were seated for hours nestling that one cup). But the next time he did it again when there were multiple vacant seats around me. Some people were seated with just glasses of water and reading. I had intended to and eventually did purchase a beverage, but his behavior alone was discouraging. There is no policy displayed anywhere stating you must have a beverage on you in order to be seated. There is a sign suggesting limiting your stay to 90 minutes if you’re using your laptop but even then you ideally get 90 mins of uninterrupted time. All I wanted is to ease into a good book after a tiring day. It’s a pity he behaves this way because the rest of the staff is great. He certainly ruined my day. If you look at other lower ratings you’ll see I’m not the first person to have a rude experience(s). Customers make a business, it doesn’t take much to be nice to them.
A lovely place to work, or study for a few hours. My only unfulfilled desire here is for decaf coffee, or espresso. Tea just isn’t as satisfying amidst the aroma of coffee. The benefit for them being, decaf drinkers can typically drink many more coffees = $$$. Of course, this is personal taste, as I probably wouldn’t drink three or four cups of tea, where others might.
The BEST hidden gem. A bookstore coffee shop by day, bar by night. Great ambience, extremely laptop + work-friendly (so many outlets! Free wifi!), and very gracious staff. Lots of lovely barstools AND armchairs. Harry Potter wallpaper in the bathrooms. You gotta visit.
I’m giving this a high rating even though I never got the opportunity to be here! I came on a Wednesday around 1-2pm looking for a work-from-home spot while visiting NYC for a few days and came all the way down here from 39th St and unfortunately the already minimal space was completely full. Everyone else had the same idea as me! There was maybe 1-2 people who didn’t have a laptop with them. Oh well, Will maybe try again next time I have a chance to visit NYC! It looked really cozy on the inside with comfy chairs and a bar. Also a back garden patio with seating as well as front outdoor seating. Outlets at the bar that I noticed.
Book Club is the perfect NYC coffee place. Its warm and cozy. I use it for all my first dates. The wood and plexi partitions are so great looking and give you cozy privacy from the other patrons. The outdoor seating gets the afternoon sunshine. Inside you are surrounded by a progressively curated collection of books. Its locally owned. There is nothing to NOT love about this place!
Seriously one of my favorite spots in the city! It is literally the coffee shop / bookstore that I have been dreaming of!WiFi? Check!Plugs? Check!Good coffee + Baristas? Check! And as if that wasn’t enough, it’s also a full on book store and bar with great reading chairs and an outdoor patio! It is the best spot to get some work done, dive into or discover a new book, and of course grab a drink.
The cafe is cozy, but the staff is rude. The barista screamed across the cafe to say something to me, when she could’ve walked over instead of disturbing everyone working there. I’m giving 3 stars because the staff could be more kind to their customers, and all it takes is simple etiquette!
Great selection of books (and delicious teas among other drinks). I really love that both owners leave book recommendations around the bookstore. They have a fantastic childrens section as well as a NYC section in the back. Its a beautiful store with comfortable seating, a long bar with stools and a great vibe.
Really great spot, the kind where you know youre going to find a book you like. Not overwhelming in size, so its easy to digest. I often find a smaller bookstore helps hone your focus. Also a great place to spend time in a third space, even in the age of Covid-19. Thoughtfully made coffee (not an afterthought), or some beer and wine if youd like! Quaint corner of Alphabet City too. Whats not to like?
Adorable book store meets cafe meets bar - easily a new staple of alphabet city (especially when the outdoor patio opens!). Kind owners and great coffee. Solid amount of seating for a smaller space; and really spacious bathrooms. Not to mention the fabulous selection of books.Note: this space used to be No Malice Palace which was a former ABC staple - couldnt be happier that Book Club is in the space now. A perfect successor for one of my favorite neighborhood spots.
Theyve recently opened, but its already great. Get there before other people find out about it. Nice teas from a tea distributor upstate, coffee is very good. There are about 15 seats in the place, very cozy. Its definitely a place youll be able to work for hours. Great playlist too!
If the staff was rude to your sister, would you thank them? This place has great aesthetics spoiled by disrespect remarks from the staff towards my party. No matter the beauty on the surface, what matter most is on the inside.Disrespect is hurtful, and unprofessional.Ill relay this to management if they care to know what happened.
Finally, strolled into Book Club to grab a coffee and realized it was an actual independent bookstore not just a cafe! i swear i have passed the location and i never looked in...discovery!Book Club is a indie bookshop and bar. currently, there is sidewalk seating out front. the interior is dedicated to shelves of curated books for sale. theres a backyard garden with seating as well. and once interior tables and bar seating are back in play in NYC...you can see how the shop is very much cozy a place to grab a beverage, buy a book, and read! very chill warm vibes are abundant here in appearance and spirit.tbh, i didnt love the Iced Americano. it was just okay a best. id guess it was MUD brand coffee which in my opinion is pretty hit or miss when iced. also the coffee was like $3.75 for a small 8 ounce cup...not the greatest value for me. coffee is subjective...however there are a variety of other hot and cool drinks to try as well as adult beverages like wine and beer. so if the coffee program here isnt to your liking, theres more things to sip. there are also small baked bites as well (i think).the bookstore looks great and im looking to exploring it. it has that comfy parlor room vibe and in general evokes a feeling that this is where one can discover and enjoy books. there was a variety of fiction and nonfiction titles. if youre looking to support indie store and you enjoy reading---you have a 2 for 1 in Book Club.the service was pleasant and quick.
This place is so great! It’s so difficult to find a nyc coffee shop that encourages you to read, hangout and relax. It seems like all of them have uncomfortable chairs that cause you to drink quickly and leave. This place is a book lovers’ dream! Cozy chairs, coffee, hot chocolate, walls of bookshelves, exposed brick, soft music and a fire place. You have to try it!

2022-01-10An actual slice of paradise!! Coffee was good, beer & wine selection is plentiful, and they have all the newest reads in stock. Upon arriving we did scramble to find a place to sit, and we lucked out eventually. Their music is very loud but it could not have been more perfect. I really think I could spend an entire day there! The staff was also friendly! Love u guys omg

2022-03-27This place is lovely with a really relaxing vibe. In the front there’s a bar with wine and beer and some tables and chairs. In the back there’s a book store with a lot of comfortable seating. We got the boozy cold brew and it was so great with some oat milk. The books were curated and there were recommendations and reviews. Picked up a couple books and will definitely come back.

2022-02-19Okay so I have a lot to say about this place. I’ve known this place for 5 months now and it’s absolutely astonishing, everything they do. The ambiance is perfect to work or study, people inside are really friendly. Staff? I’ve met the best staffs ever here, I know like 5 different staff that works here and all of them are really friendly. Prices are not really high comparing to what they are offering. Love to work here sip wine, it’s made of simplicity

2021-10-11I love the entire vibe of this place -- cozy books, cozy bar, cozy armchairs. I was here for several hours around 9pm on Sunday night, and it was the perfect balance of happening but not crowded. They have a really nice drink selection, and a great book selection. And I loved the candles everywhere -- they definitely contribute to the cozy, welcoming, intellectual feel!

2022-06-28Cozy spot to read on a rainy day with a latte.Loved the small details such as the book pages for wallpaper in the bathroom. Also the barista’s playlist had some Hilary duff bops. Much appreciated

2022-07-02It’s a really nice and cozy place. I liked the coffee along with the book selection. Don’t go in expecting a huge selection though but they still have good books. I would definitely come here if you need a chill place to read or study. The workers are also great and super nice!

2022-06-23The Book Club is a really cute and cozy place to grab a drink and read. Or a place to grab a drink and hangout. The vibes are really chill. I went for a poetry reading and loved it. Staff are nice and it’s decorated really cute. Outdoor seating also available. They have lots of little events that are free to attend!

2022-09-04Book Club is a combination I wish we saw more of: bookstore + cafe + open late! Getting tea here and sitting down to read or write is such a good vibe. Cute outdoor seating area in the back, too. They even host cool events. Grateful that this place exists 😊

2022-07-12Not impressed with this cafe. Went at 9pm on a Monday to do some reading, sit outside and enjoy the wind, and was met with a massively large crowd in the back of the cafe that was literally screaming. Despite that disturbance, I went ahead and bought a tea and sat outside. I read on my laptop quite often, and this evening I was doing so. I read in sweet solitude for twenty minutes before the bartender came up to me and recited the No laptops after 7pm rule...also outside on a public street as well? I suppose it ruins the Book Clubs aesthetic to have people on laptops. Hate to break it to you guys, but its 2022, not 1975. Being respectful, I brought my unfinished drink to the bar and left. Unimpressed, will not be returning. Late-night study spots are a rarity in this area, so I was excited to come here. However, not allowing tech after a certain hour is ridiculous.

2021-06-10Absolutely love this place! So cozy and welcoming. The barista was friendly and quick to make our drinks. The coffee was good enough, but I just love the space. It has a great outdoor patio in the back, plenty of seating, WiFi, and great book selection!
