Buffalo Exchange in other cities:
I just feel like I wasted my time here. I had an appointment today to sell clothing and I brought so much stuff. My clothing is beautiful and well curated. The person who was looking through my stuff took NONE of my clothing. Such a waste of my time. I came 30 minutes on the subway just to have my time wasted. Never selling here again.
Came in with perfectly good vans that I’ve never worn and was told they looked worn out and torn. Mind you I toured the store and saw they have wallets missing zippers, stains on bags , and items with loose beads. Definitely would look into other places to sell to or even donate. Dont waste your time. There has to be nicer , less snooty employees in better establishments willing to work with you.
I completely understand the need to be cautious during this pandemic, but their approach to safety was totally unnecessary. I had only one option was to make an appointment, when other clothes trading had the option of drop off. They wont give cash they only want you to open or have a PayPal account which with pandemic Im sure Im not the only one who has lost a bank account. When I gave the cashier my ID she didnt want to touch it and had me put it on the counter and didnt want to touch it to turn it around. I was treated as a leper not a customer. They could wear gloves and use sanitizer if they dont want to touch money or ID
I go to this store probably 2-3 times a week, and Im pretty sure the staff all know me by now. The store is a good size, and while their menswear inventory is slightly lacking, they have great options for femmes! The staff are very friendly and helpful, and I always have a nice time chatting with them. Ive found high quality, brand name items here for reasonable prices and also some less recognizable but super high quality pieces for a bargain. Ive sold clothes here too, and while I didnt get much in return Im not bummed or annoyed since I would have donated them all for no return otherwise. They have a solid no-contact process for selling items, and the staff do their best to create a safe and hygienic shopping experience (no trying things on, for example). They also make sure that any sunglasses that get tried on get wiped down afterward.I love coming here to see what new treasures have made their way to the store, and daydreaming about what outfits I can create with them.
I really like this location - TBH, this is the only Buffalo Exchange I go to. The buyers team do a good job in maintaining an interesting ongoing selection. Having said that, they buyers do make odd decisions sometimes - I wouldnt expect them to take any stained items, but often see them in the store (and Im not talking temporary stains). Surprisingly, they passed on a shirt I bought a week earlier (and havent worn - I was stupid enough to remove the tags before trying it on).The staff is friendly and helpful without being fake-nice like in many other stores, which I like.
This review is for selling clothing. The concept is cool and the appointments were easy to make but since it’s covid they are not sorting clothing with you and giving price on the spot. I sent over 3 suitcase of Very good to new clothing with tags still on. They told me they were looking for in season, no problem. And that they will not return clothing back it will go to donations if they cannot buy-back. Long story short I got 0$ in buy backs. I was shocked. What’s disappointing was I was told they were looking for very specific shoes and clothing like peasant dresses and platform shoes/ sandals upon all back. Not all people checking out their store will be this specific. They should have told me they wanted that specifically when I made an appointment. Had I known I would have rather donate to a thrift shop for charitable donation otherwise I would recommend waited to see If it was even worth it to exchange in person.
This store used to be good for me but now personnel keeps refusing to me to accept good brand clothes for selling doing it under various pretexts: they take only seasonal clothes, then suddenly they find some kind of detective, then we dont buy them at all, I visited the store more than three times and considering my clothes were in good condition but now I dont think I will come back, wasting time!! If you would like to put your stuff in donation, then its fine, they will accept.
The selection here can be hit or miss but I think the buyers here do a better curation job than all the other Buffalo Exchanges I’ve been to! The pricing here is kind of weird too — some items are priced pretty close to what they’d be new, but also sometimes the weird pricing will work out in your favor and you can get a new with tags item for a steeeeep, steep discount. Overall this is a cool little consignment shop with something for a variety of styles and budgets.
ProsGreat selection (you always find at least one amazing deal)In a good shopping areaMost staff members are really nice!ConsRetail pricing instead of thriftNever pay you what your clothes are worth when selling (on-trend, in season, doesn’t matter. They will underpay)A few of the staff members can be rude
I had a bunch of clothes to donate that I knew I had grown out of so I gave Buffalo Exchange a call. The person on the phone was incredibly lofty as though I was calling Bloomingdales. That was the first red flag. They told me that I had better make sure the clothes were ready for the rack becuase they wouldnt possibly have time to iron or steam the articles. OK thats fine. I actually took a few clothes out of the bag because they made me feel a bit self-concious about what I was donating /potentially selling (imagine!)When I went in for my appointment - the intake was simultaneously haphazard and rushed. Maybe it was because I went at 4pm and they had more than one person in the store but I stood awkwardly waiting to be helped - only to be told to go stand outside and wait for a box for my clothes.Weeks later I realized I hadnt heard from them either way. I understood that there was no guarantee that I would make money off of the clothes, but I did wonder if it would be going to a good place otherwise.I called today to see what happened and was told that there was a note written saying nice patterns, too many summer clothes. And there was also the assumption that Id try donating again. Thanks but no thanks.I wouldve given one star if the person I called to follow up with hadnt been so polite, helpful, and apologetic for her co-workers negligence.
I put two stars because it used to be full of gems years ago. But not only the staff is rude (I’m French and my English is not amazing. I couldn’t understand what she was saying me about the bags. She even made fun of me to her collègue afterwards ... passive agressive people who don’t even considerate that I might not be from there... so awful). Avoid this filthy unfriendly place please.
Nice employees and amazing selection, very fair pricing. They have everything from vintage to current designer to everyday great clothes. Accessories and jewelry are awesome. They also sell great new merchandise - unique well-selected styles at reasonable prices. Sellers are friendly and knowledgeable. Love this place and all BEs in NY!
The overall friendliness, Courteous-ness, efficiency (shout out to Moe:) and professionalism of the store was on point at this location. But the East Village location seems to be a little more generous with what they offer for clothing. BE is in passing to and from my Sisters apartment and I visit her quite often, so this location is better for me. I brought in some brand new winter boots, and a classic leather jacket, and honestly was ashamed to disclose what I accepted for them. But Hey, what the heck I was able to get some Not Rays Pizza and a Soda Pop.
This is for selling. I gave them their limit of fifty clothing items, thats two full boxes of clothing I triple-checked was in good condition and within the fall season as they requested. But they called saying they accepted NONE of them. Obviously that’s disappointing. And in rejecting my clothes they shared NEW information of specific items they were looking for that they didn’t communicate to me sooner. That’s a waste of everyone’s time and I clearly would have been better off donating the clothes to a place I knew needed them instead of the unknown place they sent my clothes (assuming they did send them somewhere and they aren’t selling them themselves anyway). It’s still a pandemic so I want to give the benefit of the doubt, but the truth is you’d be better off selling somewhere else, having a garage sale, or knowing where your clothes are donated. This felt exactly like a scam. And now that I see the other reviews I see that I’m not alone. If you’re reading this, don’t sell here.
Went here today and the associate buying my clothing didn’t know the brand Dolce Vita. I understand it’s impossible to know all relevant brands but for it to be a widely known brand like this one, I question the credibility of her choices on what she didn’t chose from my assortment.
Its super easy to sell here.... if you have on trend clothing for the current season youll come out with some cash... They dont take everything, it is a for profit store so they have to make money too but its worth a shot if you want some extra cash or just cleaning out your closet! ****side note if you have high end designer stuff, bring the original receipt or box it came in etc., I brought something in of high value without those things and I could tell the buyer was a little nervous about the authenticity. Thankfully a luxury consignment shop took it off my hands! They have some high end stuff and vintage but its mostly stuff more on trend/modern than designer focused.
Preferred the Williamsburg location by far. And the midtown location better as well. This location didn’t seem to cater to men’s clothing at all. It felt as if there were only 2 - 3 racks of clothes for men upfront and the entire back portion of the store was dedicated to woman’s apparel. Haven’t completely lost faith in the franchise though. Just wouldn’t waste the trip coming to this location as a buyer or seller again.
Review as someone selling clothes here (mostly writing this cuz when i was looking for similar reviews i found so few):i came in at noon on a friday in july with the equivalent of about four shopping bags full of clothes and a few accessories. i had about four or five items picked, and was offered just over forty dollars in credit and just over twenty dollars in cash. the stuff of mine that didn’t get picked i chose to leave there to be donated. i waited in line about twenty or thirty minutes and my transaction took about twenty minutes, all total i was inside for less than, but close to, an hour. the employees were pleasant and easy to interact with and i would like to think that as a customer i was also pleasant and easy to get along with. i anticipated having to be there a while and i think my trip was shorter than i had expected.tips to other folks looking to sell clothes:don’t expect a lot of value for your stuffbe patientbe nicepay attention to the buyer and not your phone
I frequent this location on average 1-3 times a month, and the level of rudeness has increased while the quality of customer service has decreased. I never expect a visit to sell and shop at any Buffalo Exchange to be less than 45-60 min on average, especially if Im lucky at the buy counter, thats not a problem I factor that in automatically. But, today I was made to wait needlessly for about twenty minutes on line to sell because for some reason the two buyers had to work on one customer for a long long time, while I stood waiting on line. Several people came and stood on line, waited and left, it wasnt until there were about three people behind me that the manager/ lead decided it was time to call someone over to the buy counter, mind you the store appeared to be fully staffed for a Friday mid afternoon and I noticed that there was no line to check out. No apologies or explanation for this unnecessary inconvenience was ever offered.
It seemed like the associates were a lot nicer and more engaged than when I shopped last year at thid location. I only had contact with the fitting room attendant and cashier. I felt like their handbag selection was lacking but obviously, it depends on the public and they dont have much control over that. I really enjoyed my shopping experience here!
Second favorite location, good to hit when I dont feel like going into the city. Even if I come in to browse I always walk out with a surprising good find. No, they dont pay a lot for clothes. But if you can get a few bucks for something you werent wearing anyway whats the problem? You can get 50% in store credit to put toward a new thing.
I love this store because I love thrift stores. This shop tends to have better quality than many thrift shops. I often find things here that are brand new. Their prices are very fair. If you have things you want to sell, you can bring them in and they have a system for buying things that they like. You get a choice of cash or credit as payment. It can be disheartening to bring in things that you think they would want to sell and have the buyer reject your offerings. But if you have good stuff, its a great way to change over your wardrobe.
Yes, this place purchases your clothes, but they are extremely picky and will likely not buy anything that is out of season or in need of any fixes. We wound up just donating all of what we brought and waited 30 minutes in line for the appraisal. Its still a great service and Im glad the store is fair.
Spoke to staff Bout my items I described to them they said great bring them in. To bring in brand new spring and summer things and bags for them to try to have mr donate everything. Not one item was accepted I wanted to shop after but honestly I feel played. No recommendations from me sorry
I brung a bag that was almost the size of a 30 gallon garbage bag full of clothes that still had tags on them and were only worn once. The girl that sorted through my things told me that none of my stuff were sellable and it wasn’t in season. Theses are things that I had brought the summer before, so how out of date can they be. I offered for them to take the clothes without me receiving any pay due to trying to declutter my closet and she happily took the items. These people are trying to profit from us they are not trying to give you money for your own things. Some people are very unreasonable and it would of been nice if she would of at least gave me a store credit because I see some cute new items that’s I was willing to trade for.
I just moved to NY from Chicago and I have never had an issue at Buffalo Exchange until moving here. There’s a manager named Jasmine, a white female with a mullet. Every time I have come into the store she has been rude and nasty to me. Today after asking her to look over an item( price adjustment) that I had a little more love than normal on it; she proceeded to throw the item, without even looking me in the eye says that it’s priced as marked. She had even accused me of stealing in the fitting room. I have sold and brought thousands of dollars worth of items for the past 8 years with the business. I’m so upset and I will continue to report this issue until she is fired.
Always nice and conversational staff... considering most retails employees show no care in NYC. I get fair trade values for my clothes too. They are looking for hip / current trend clothes. People get so worked up about how they didnt get the fair amount... probably because they are hurt that they arent trendy. I am not, but stuff that gets rejected goes to charity. I am cool with that.
I didnt buy or look for stuff to buy. But I did bring 2 garbage bags full of clothes used and new with tags to try to sell (even for a few bucks) along with my neighbor who also brought 2 bags full of stuff. After going through all of our stuff they told us none of it was the style they were looking for and he 1 item they did want (new nike sweatpants) they wanted to give me $2 or a $4 credit in the store! Not worth trying to bring your stuff to. A guy ahead of us had a suitcase full of mens suits looked like they were never worn and they didnt want to take any of them because it wasnt their style. I left not even knowing what their style was since they didnt want to take anything from anyone.
I have been to only one buffaloand that experience was wonderful BUT going to this one has changed my my mind 😠 NO MORE FOR ME!!! This location was the worst for me!! The girl low balled me just enough to re buy the items i was selling for herself. I believe her name is Sam always remember that people look at these reviews and take them seriously. She is not a good buyer, as for what they have in store it is VERY Slim to not having anything. Not a good experience will vist the other ones in a few days just hope they are different. She also didnt buy much from me which I was surprised Becasue i made a few sales outside the store because people behind me couldnt believe that she was passing on a lot of stuff.. As for me and this location Ill pass.
Ive coming here for a few years now. I love the layout and shopping experience. Its not too cluttered that I get overwhelmed. The prices are fair and the selection is modern. Its a good alternative to Beacons Closet if your looking for a less harried shopping experience.
I went to the exchange to sell some items, friendly staff but they get very picky in there I look around at the mens selections its really not that greatI bring in practically new items and they examine it like there historians handling it like there fragile items its horrible to watch, all the while there pricing and folding ugggh so they get to it I have one leather coat , new sneakers puma still boxed and wool dress coat 4 sweaters they pick lent off before they say yes or no looking for spots zipping and unzippingThat alone is a turn off ,my items were valued used by my standards 100 dollars there price 55.67 in credit 30.00 in cash lolNeedless to say I scooped my items off the counterAnd leftThis has happen before with them and I have returned with the same items with a different sales girl and got a way better priceMy point is they dont know what there doing here half the time. I will make an appearance here when desperate.
Vintage STUFF EVERYWHERE!!!!! I was doing the TIME WARP, AGAIN!!!!!!! Groovy staff, GROOVY people!!! The vibe is just AWESOME!!! For a THRIFT SHOP IMPRESARIOS OF DAYS LONG PAST, like me, the prices are decent because the clothing is of the best quality and, they are not in high demand! I will DEFINITELY make B.E a frequent DIG!!!! This place is FAAAR OUT!
I have to say, this has been my go-to for both buying and selling since its opened. I have scored some amazing DVF dresses in sample sizes for under $50, a great halloween costume, and some awesome graphic tees. The staff is always so friendly and helpful, whether at the selling counter, fitting rooms, or check out.Shout out to Aja for being an awesome manager and a pleasure to chat with while selling tonight!
My first visit there...and I loved it!! I will definetly go back again. There were no funny smells or employees with bad attitudes. My shopping experience there was very good and I will recommend this thrift shop to all of my friends. It is in a convenient location and affordable.
So I came here about 3 times to donate my clothing and they happily accepted some. However on the other side theres a checkout area. Some white tall guy with glasses ( who must have didnt see me donate) watches me while checking customers out.In my head Im thinking why is this dude grilling me so hard. He then randomly just asked me can I just hold that hat up front until youre ready to go ? As if he thought I was going to steal it!!!! Dude made me feel singled out I guess bc I was black. Im never coming here again. This is the correct location i had my bad experience. I mistaked it for another location.
Terrible customer service. They insist you have an appointment to sell your things even if there’s no one in the store. A little too far in the direction of “safety” and not using their brains to think about whether this situation seems risky or not. Sorry not coming back.
I RATHER SHOP FOR NAME BRAND OF IM SHOPPING HERE FOR THE SAME PRICECOME WHO YOU GUYS ARE SUCKERINGSECOND HAND CLOTHES SHOULD BE HALF THE PRICE OR LOWER NOT SAME PRICE. AS MARKET PRICE.THIS STORE ARE SUCKERING PEOPLEWHAT A DAMN SHAME FOR THOSE WHO DONT SEE THIS COMING YOUR WAY.
Stopped by yesterday & tbh it looks like any other thrift shop .. a bunch of clothes in a store 🤷🏾♀️ .. I didn’t see anything that’s ‘in season’ but a bunch of plaid & plain tees but won’t take items people actually would wear ... this store & beacon’s closet shouldn’t have a trade/sell section because it isn’t worth the amount you paid for it .. barely half
Something off about the woman at the counter . she was so quick to say no .she didnt notice the $1000 dollar Rick Owens jacket in the bag .People of color beware . I think its one of those gentrified places , I act like a hippie but Im actually a racist from Wisconsin vide .
ITS A FEW PEOPLE IN HERE THAT ARE RACIST AND SELECTIVE TO BLACKS AND SPANISH PEOPLE . THE MANAGER OR WHO EVER SHE IS ALWAYS PAYS MORE MONEY TO THE WHITE PEOPLE AND NOT BLACKS AND SPANISH AND ITS SICKENING. IM NOT THE ONLY PERSON WHO HAS EXPERIENCED THIS THERE ARE OTHERS AS WELL WHO HAVE HAD THE SAME EXPERIENCE AS ME THAT IT MADE US UNCOMFORTABLE TO GO BACK THAT THE WORTH OF OUR BELONGINGS EQUALS LESS THAN THE STUFF THE WHITE PEOPLE COME IN WITH . SOME OF THE STAFF IN THERE IS COOL AND VERY HELPFUL AND JUST DOING THEIR JOB .

2022-02-22If you’re selling, they do take walk ins if the wait time is low. (Weekdays or early on weekends) You can also call ahead to see if they are looking for specific items. They do ask for your ID at your appointment. The staff is sassy as the other reviews have said. There is no consistency between their stores. I have gotten stuff rejected from this location that was accepted at the other location. Everything they don’t pay you for, they offer you to donate. The store itself is small but well stocked. The racks can get messy and some of their items are overpriced for their condition (missing zippers, stains). They do have some good pieces if you have the time to go through the racks. Dressing rooms were opened. Masks are required. They don’t seem to carry plus sizes or kid sizes.

2022-01-18I sold a good selection of clothes and got very great credit/cash for it. They have very selective buyers, watch out lol. A little bit sassy too. Overall great staff. If you sell your clothes, the wait time is not bad. You drop it for buyers to go through and wait inside the store. The process is very fast.

2022-04-27Dont go to this location If youre black. Been here multiple times and I usually just quietly and respectfully try clothes on and buy. out of the multiple interactions Ive had with the white employees I always left feeling rubbed the wrong way. Whether its from a passive aggressive rude tone of voice or one employee sloppily folding my clothes because opted not to buy a bag and not handing me my receipt. I wont be back. They are only pleasant if youre some white alternative hipster..

2022-07-02Great selection of new and used clothes. Been coming here for a while and I have found many great pieces for pretty low prices. My only complaint is that they don’t give much for clothes.

2022-07-23If you a person of color, don’t come here. They give you the STARES. The karens there won’t appreciate you coming into their store if you not dressed as a white hipster. Don’t even bother with management they look after each other, It seemed to bother them when my friend and I were speaking spanish in there because one of the girls started yelling among her co workers about my friend and I ….IN FRONT OF US AND EVERYONE IN THE STORE they literally treat it like it’s their territory. They really don’t care, they are sassy, entitled girls.

2017-10-24Its a pretty good store with quality and surely great vintage pieces. Will go more after today. Id say its definitely worth it. Since youre paying for a vintage item at a low price from what its actually worth! coming here more often! Staff are nice and friendly and the place is clean

2022-04-27I honestly thought that it would be better than going online and selling my items....sadly to say I was very disappointed in every aspect of how they claim too be and then seeing how they actually runtheir business,my items alot were still brand new or maybe worn once, most still with tags on,I took low end to high end name brand trendy to vintage style designs and out of 50 which is their limit they took maybe 20,scrutinize the rest for what they claim my not sell in the store they say they pay %25 of item cost but they dont discuss what they base it on,end of story is they said I had a $180 STORE CREDIT???or $91.25 cash!@?/,if I am minalmalizing and getting rid of brand new stuff, why would I want a store credit buying other people stuff????They ask if youd like to DONATE the stuff they dont take,if I want to DONATE,I could have just did that and get my own tax write off,my Marc Jacob bag and my Citizen For Humanity jeans will be sold for more than $91.25,the 3 pair of pumas and the 2 pairs of converses even at $15 to 20 bucks will be more than they paid me......sellar beware....

2022-02-14Awesome store. A little pricey for a thrift shop but the products are of good quality. I will definitely be back sometime.

2022-02-26They had a good selection of clothing, honestly. Just a tad-bit over-priced for thrifting in my opinion.
