Cafe Gitane in other cities:
Very unprofessional waitress. One brought in wrong item. One forgot our coffee. Our canceled our coffee and the other one wanted to charge us for that at the same time. Instead of taking care of orders they’re just petting dogs and looking at mirrors to do make up….. I used to be a barista at the busiest coffee shop so I know serving people can be tired and busy but STILL THAT’S YOUR JOB.
I really hate it when I forget to take a photo... usually happens when I am into the food. This place was a good find. Got a beet salad, couscous salad, americano and bread pudding. All very good. Would recommend this place if you are in the neighborhood. Funky vibe with great food and music. $36 for everything. A real find.
I am not 100% sure, but I guess this is a Morocco-ish style restaurant. It had an eastern style environment with old fixtures and staff had a welcoming Mediterranean attitude. The place is not fancy but cozy and friendly. Menus and even bathroom signs were in English and French. The food was good, but I think not everyone would have the same idea. The food is reasonably priced.
Note: cash-only! ATM available down the street in a market on Prince.Charming little cafe with good drinks and great French-Morocan cuisine. Very good service. Came on a weeknight and it was easy to get a table, but as the night went on it got busier. Will be back for brunch at some point.
The waitresses here are hardworking women! They remembered me from my last visit months ago.The couscous is so divine here, but that’s also because it was my first restaurant in NYC I’ve ever tried hummus, couscous, zhoug (that green sauce). The intro to that cuisine made me remember this place forever. This time I visited for a classic hot chocolate and croissant. The hot chocolate is so special with the cocoa on top. They’re always lovely and patient here.
Love love love love.Such cool atmosphere, simply delicious food, it is so hearty and well balanced, generous portion sizes and friendly waitresses. Delicious cheesecake and Aperol, also would highly recommend their quinoa roasted veg salad as well as smoked trout salad. But most things I’ve got to try from their menu is worth trying.Well done guys. 👌🏻
Have to give this place 3 stars because of the service. The food was good but the service was not, the waitresses kept messing up the orders and bringing the wrong things to our table, it took a while to get their attention and we were brought a cup with lipstick stain and when asked for another one the waitress had an attitude. The place is really cute and small so I was confused for the lack of service.
Uncomfortably smoky inside; I asked to sit outside, where I was admonished for ordering only beverages (a privilege reserved for those willing to brave the smoke inside).Decent price for a cappuccino, but overpriced for how burnt it was.I had been here a few other times, and always found it unremarkable but reliable. After this visit, I probably wont return.
Worse service we have ever had in NYC. Our waitress got our order wrong, then charged us for food we never ordered, and ignored us for most of the meal. Not sure what was wrong with her. Fortunately, the other waitress Mattie stepped in to help. Food was excellent. What a shame
Terrible service- do they even want returning customers? Had to remind the waitress & chef three times so they’d finally make the to-go order that was supposed to be ready for pick up when my husband went to get it. They forgot a side and the waitress seemed snobby when I told her this fact, just a lazy “what do you want me to do about this?” Would have expected a refund for all the trouble but that wasn’t offered, just a long wait for the side. I used to be a waitress and this is just abysmal service quality. And the prices just do not match the quality or quantity of the food- too high for what you get. Was the second and last time we eat from here. There are so many better Mediterranean places around here, why suffer needlessly at this rude, unhelpful place?
The restaurant is situated in great area for tourists, the locals or businessmen . What i liked about the place, was the ambience, original layout, very pleasant staff and oh food , the most important the food was amazing ;meaning mouth watering made from fresh ingredients, with original layout. There is something for everybody on the menu ; regular meals or fancy being brave they have it. I am so definitely coming back soon while in Tokyo. Definitely worth it!! :)
One of the best places to grab a casual meal. Have been coming here for years and though the place has become less popular, and less detail-oriented than it used to be, the food is still pretty good. My go-to dishes at are the couscous, stuffed eggplant, olives (they come with oranges and spicy pepper), and avocado toast. They also have pretty good tables wines. The service is pretty good.
Interiors are cozy and nice. The service is chipper and friendly. Mocha is good -- not too sweet. And drinks come with complimentary dark chocolate! Avocado toast was fresh and zesty. Baked eggs with salmon was savory and delicious without being too much. Brie and apples makes a fantastic light shared brunch appetizer.
Absolutely terrible. I can confidently say I have never been to a worse establishment in my entire life. Took us a while to get seated and waitress had a horrible attitude the whole time. When the food finally arrived, it was burnt. When my son with autism didn’t want to eat the food because it looked disgusting, we took him around the corner to a pizza place. After he got the single slice of pizza he tried to bring it in the restaurant. When he did, the waitress told him no outside food. We ordered around 60 dollars worth of food. Yet, my autistic son was not allowed to eat his single slice in the place that he needed to get because the food from the cafe was burnt. They made him eat outside and watch us eat our terrible cafe food through the window. Unbelievable. Terrible staff, terrible food and high prices. Avoid at all costs and tell your friends to boycott this place. I will spend every last waking minute of my life trying to get this pace closed down.
I only had a few small plates here since they were closing soon (I only wanted small plates anyway since it was late and I just wanted something to eat after work) but they were all great. I definitely want to come here at some point and have a full meal, but all three plates I ordered were on point. Its such a small place I wasnt expecting much, so it was a very pleasant surprise when the food came out delicious.
Good food, well priced. Its often crowded since its a small place and its cash only. I think the downfall to this restaurant is the service. The waitresses have this pompous attitude, which doesnt make it a relaxing or comfortable place to eat. You constantly feel rushed as theyve cleared your table and even take away your water without even asking if youre done. I understand that they want to keep a flow of traffic in the restaurant, I just feel they need to go about it in a more polite manner. I feel rushed every time Ive eaten there, and thats not the way any person wants to feel when eating or conversing with friends.
Stopped in here after going on the Tommy’s New York tour of the Catacombs. I had the tuna ceviche and the wife had arugula salad. We both enjoyed the food. Space was cozy however not what I would call overtly crowded.People around us were having great conversations while we ate and planned out our changing day due to rain.I would recommend this place again.
One of my favorite brunch spot in the city. Excellent french breakfast and dinnerBring Cash. no credit card accepted.Everything Ive ever eaten here is delicious. Service is great. Usually crowded around brunch time. Some of my favorites:Yogurt with granola and fruitOrange wafflesCouscous with chicken and vegie tooAvocado toastArugula salad with beets, olive tapenade, apples, organic chicken
This French/Moroccan restaurant always has a queue. Whether its rain or shine, there is always a crowd. It is probably due to the size of this place. However, the avocado toast makes up for the snugness of this restaurant. It is so simple, yet it is delectable. Will try to make it on my own instead of waiting for a table.
Nice spot. Kind of reminds me of a European café, not only in terms of design and food but also atmosphere and service. One thing that would probably never happen in Europe is that one time I only ordered coffee at around noon where people had lunch and the waitress pointed out that the table is actually reserved for someone who also orders food (not sure if its a common restaurant rule due to a limited seating possibility, but I felt it wasn’t that nice).
I love this place. i have never had to wait which is surprising because it is very good. the staff are very friendly and the service is fast and clean. it also has quirky decor and it nice to sit and enjoy a meal after a long day. the prices are also reasonable- you will definitely be full by the end of your meal.
Nolita is a great neighborhood in general and this spot is one of the gem restaurants within that hood. The Moroccan couscous is world famous. Or at least famous domestically. But the best thing of all on the menu is the avocado toast - multi-grain toast with dried red pepper flakes, olive oil, and of course... avocado. Simple and amazing. Great, hip waitstaff as well!
My first foray 7 years ago with baked eggs and avo toast. This place is a classic and so happy they’re still in the hood. Breakfast to be honest is a major standout here. The dukkah is fantastic and the cafe culture it exudes is exactly what we all think of when eating in NYC
Every aspect of our meal at Cafe Gitane was awful. The food was over priced, unseasoned, and the bread that was served was stale and dry. Furthermore, the three slices of bread were barely slices and for more it cost 75 cents. The server took more than 25 minutes to even ask if we wanted drinks (my friend ordered a regular coffee and was brought an americano), and then only took our orders after I got up to ask to order. The food was unimpressive. I ordered the baked aggs with basil, tomatoes and added lam sausage. The eggs were tough, the tomatoes were straight from a can. The sausages were lovely. The hostess was standing next to us throughout the meal texting. The server had to be flagged again to get our bill and she scowled at our request. It is cash only (which we were rudely informed of by the hostess who took a break from texting) and we left virtually no tip as the whole experience was terrible. On our exit the hostess accosted us and barred the exit to the restaurant demanding to know why we thought the service was insufficient. She was not satisfied by all of these reasons and we stepped around her to leave. I will never go to this restaurant again
Café Gitane is a long time favorite of mine. The first time I eat here I was put off by the cramped space, limited drink menu, and cash only. But than I eat. I had the couscous with Merguez sausage and the meatballs. It was all delicious. The presentation was great as well. Iv been back to this location several times. If the small space, drinks and credit card thing are a problem for you. Just go to the one at the Jane hotel. Its bigger, have more menu options and a full bar. Plus youll get a kick out of the Jane hotel. Its straight out of a Wes Anderson movie.
I happened to wander into Cafe Gitane with a few friends on a brief trip to NYC and Im so happy we did. The establishment is small and unassuming – I think my living room is bigger than the whole restaurant – and it has a lived in feel, but I mean all of this in the most endearing way. The food is where Gitane really shines. All around, presentation, taste, portion size, price, really good. For reference, I got the Hachis Parmentier and would happily get it again, though I also just need to explore more of the menu. Ill be back when I return to NYC.
Ordered a croissant and coffee to go as I was on the way to airport with luggage. Coffee took a really long time and it was served in normal cup on a plate, and not in a takeaway cup. They said they would make one to go and gave the first coffee to someone else. You never know whether your taxi to LGA is going to take 30 mins or an hour with traffic. The second run of my coffee seemed to take forever. Incredibly slow and lassez faire service. I had to cancel and go. I didnt ask for a refund, could have taken days. Cant miss my flight.
This the SPOT for great Moroccan food. With an intimate and unique ambiance, Cafe Gitane takes you to the heart of Marrekech with its delicious Couscous and the delicious aroma of so many other dishes. Great place for a date night as well! Try it when you are in the Soho area!
I came here with my Asian American social networking group for Yum Cha on a stormy Saturday afternoon. Located inside East Broadway Mall of the second floor under the Manhattan Bridge. The quality of food is good yet there were not many carts circling the restaurant of this grand size. The staff is somewhat inattentive as members of our party hailed a waiter numerous times for a cup of hot water and order a platter of Hoi2 Sin1 Chou Mein. The decor is a large chandelier with two large photos on opposite walls of Hong Kong harbor landscape and Chinas Forbidden Citys Imperial Palaces of the Ming and Qing Dynasties in Beijing and Shenyang. The restrooms are somewhat filty and there are no basic amenties as paper towels near the sinks.
Shameful attempt at couscous. Improperly cooked and under-seasoned. Beets in their beet salad under cooked and rendered flavorless. But see, in place of decent food, guests are simply pumping each other full of ego boosting words and glances, that kind that are tossed across the room and linger in obvious assessment. This is a place for consuming a scene, a fantasy, not dinner.

2022-06-05My favorite neighborhood spot of all time. The food is consistently tasty, healthy, wholesome, and well priced. The wait staff are all lovely people that get to know the neighborhood. We went to Gitane in Brooklyn for the first time and the vibe was consistent across locations. Much love for Gitane.

2021-11-20The classic brunch spot that introduced me to avocado toast! I have attempted to replicate the toast on my own, but it is a standout in how they make the avocado. I’ve been going to this place as a visitor and now as a permanent resident. It’s located in a picturesque area in Nolita. After brunching here, you can roam around the area & people watch at the Elizabeth garden. My go to dish is avocado toast & the cous cous with the side of sausage. The cous cous can be shared with your dining partner. Today my dining partner suggested to share the blossom waffle and oh my, delicious! The meatballs is another shareable dish that is outstanding. I normally order a mocha latte & get excited for the paw art. This time around, none. I was a bit disappointed to not have the paw art & the chocolate that accompanies it; but I still enjoyed the meal regardless.

2022-05-20This is a hidden gem. Still as good as ever. This by far is the best cafe in the lower Manhattan zone. If you wish to be carried away and let your imagination guide you. You could be in Paris. This is as authentic as I gets.Highly recommended.🗼

2022-04-18Had walked by this place a couple times before finally going in on a VERY busy Sat afternoon (everywhere, not just here). Once we were seated, it took 30 minutes to even put an order in. Even though people outside were getting theirs in quicker. Guess being in the corner means you are forgotten. When we finally did put in our order, they didnt have any more Green Tea, and no more Trout bowl, so my wife went for Avo Toast (it was good), and I went for a Capp and Mixed Greens bowl w Chicken. Mine was decent, chicken nice and tender. Not sure Endive really jives tho...All in all, seemed very upscale and pretentious for, well no reason...it doesnt deserve it imo. Mayyybe ill come back at a less busy time to try again, but probs not. Too many other spots that have the same menu but, yknow, better.

2021-09-14Delicious food. Ive eaten at the Vinegar Hill location numerous times and love it. Service was slowish, but fine here, which is to be expected at this location.I ordered chicken to be added to the couscous dish and it wasnt, but they brought out a separate plate of chicken when I mentioned it was missing.

2022-01-21Such a great little hole in the wall! This Cafe has been here since the early 90s and has stood the test of time. Its a lovely little place with a retro theme and a North African/French cuisine. I had the couscous - definitely the best

2022-06-30This experience was not very pleasant. First off, I had a dirty cup and had to get it changed. And second, the waitress forgot to enter one of my parties food. ( we were only three people ). Another note, it looked very unsanitary. There were flies everywhere. Even in/around our food. Staff also looked a bit lost. Hopefully others have had a better experiences in the last month. The place did look like it was gonna be good though. Very unfortunate.

2021-04-16Such a great little hole in the wall! This Cafe has been here since the early 90s and has stood the test of time. Its a lovely little place with a retro theme and a North African/French cuisine. I had the couscous - definitely the best Ive ever had! So delicious. Also had the Melon Mimosa and the pasta bake, which was just as delicious. The server was very attentive. I would definitely come back here again, especially for the Couscous!

2022-03-23I went here several months ago. Worst service and salad Ive ever had, unfortunately. Its beautiful. I didnt have any other food so I cant say what the menu is like, but my experience made me not want to come back.
