Lovely pizza joint with a wide array of by the slice vegan options. The tofu on the miso green tea pizza was a bit under seasoned so that slice was a little lacking in flavor, but all of the other vegan slices were delicious. The plain mozzarella slice felt like a classic pizza experience that I haven’t had since going vegan. I’ll definitely be trying to go back.
We ordered their pizza for my office and I thought it was pretty good, not bad. I felt really healthy after eating it for sure. The only thing is that the soy pepperoni is a little bland, maybe some paprika would help out or a little more spice to it. And also we got the gluten free option with the brown rice, and I think it tasted a little bit weird just because the sauce and cheese to crust ratio was disproportionate (felt like I was mostly just eating the bare crust instead of a pizza). Maybe trying almond flour as an alternative? Overall though, really fast delivery and good prices I hope to try more of their vegetarian stuff since that seems to be their specialty.
I visit this pizza shop because of their vegan and gluten-free pizzas. Although in reality they only have 2 options that are completely vegan AND GF (Fresca and Speciale) that you can buy by the slice, the better option is to order by the pie. If you do it like this, you can request any type of pizza you want and make it both vegan and GF.My favorite is Azteca w added mushrooms and broccoli. With the add-ons it gets a bit pricey. A large, 8-slice pie could run you close to $50.The reason I give it 4 stars and not 5 is that the taste is not very consistent. One day we go, the pizza tastes pretty good a couple weeks later it is pretty bland. Either way, we almost always have to add more salt and garlic. Last time I went, the pizza tasted verrrrry nice. And for some reason, when we pack it to go and freeze it, and then heat it up at a later date it almost always tastes better. At home we also add some avocado and vegenaise. 😎Pro tip: the guys behind the oven work very hard but most people only leave tips in the jar next to the register. This money only goes to the people taking the orders. If you would like to support the chefs, leave your tips in the jar to the station on the left, closer to the pizza oven.
Cafe viva is a good option if you have a sensitive stomach! I don’t have issues with gluten BUT wheat sometimes hurts my stomach so it’s nice to have some place to go for a spelt crust pizza. I do wish they used a better vegan cheese but it’s still nice that they have it as an option.
They have plenty of vegan options to. The pizza I had was amazing. It also fills you up pretty good as i couldnt finish mine. It could be better with a bit more salt on it. But thats personal taste. I ate my pizza in the hostel where they did not have salt. But in the restaurant you have plenty of options for adding extra spices. I will definitely come back when I visit New York again.
(Plant-Based) Second time eating from here and I certainly will be returning! They usually offer four very creative, delicious, and generous styles of vegan pizza. The slices I’ve had were quite complex so I cannot comment on them entirely here. Go see for yourself! Additionally, they also serve entrees. I have had their vegan spinach and cheese ravioli (organic) which was very good! And most importantly their garlic knots are vegan and among the best I’ve had in New York City.Very fast delivery and good customer service.I wish the the delivery containers were the cardboard/wax carton kind.
Pizza is good and I recommend it. The grandma and Nona slices are by far the best! The garlic is strong but lots of sauce (which I like) and good crust. Regular slice uses cornmeal on bottom which i still dont get and I wish it had a little more sauce. When regular slice is prepared well with enough sauce and not overcooked, its a good slice and worth getting a few! However, when these slices are just cheese and crust and I would not recommend; like most pizza, use your eye to judge). The worst part is the service (two guys who retrieve slices for you behind counter that is). However, the owner Tony is clearly hands on and cares not only about his business, but his customers! With his attention you can get the service (and slice) you deserve. If you are hungry and passing by, definitely get a few grandma slices! They rock. Its worth the trip and like most pizza, when they are on its great stuff! GT (West End Ave)
Delicious and healthy food, there is nothing like it in NYC.Too many choices but everything u have had was outstanding. They use fresh ingredients, many organic, and spare no time or effort in their foods preparation. The pizza cause is outstanding, not a canned sauce they could just warm and serve. Chopped and sauteed vegetables blended with spices mixed in San Marzano paste produces something special. Congratulations to there guys for 26 years of serving amazing food!!!!!!
I always come here to eat vegan pizza, it is delicious. They also offer a vegan lasagnia that is amazing. There are many types of pizzas here for all tastes. They have gluten free options. The desserts are wonderful!! It is heaven for vegetarians and vegans in Manhattan.
Absolutely love their vegan pies. Their whole wheat is probably the best Ive had in the city. And I cant get over the quality of the vegan toppings. Its not just daiya or some other substitute - not that that would be bad - Viva comes up with creative and amazing creations. Tomato sauce thats mixed with a grain to be like a meat sauce, then topped with perfectly cooked veggies. Oh man its good. Highly recommend!
Even though it offers a vegetarian and vegan menu, neither of which I am, the pizza is one of the best Ive had in the city. And prices are pretty decent for the quality and amount of food youre getting. I really like the simple pizzas. The Sorrentino, a white pizza with ricotta, is delicious, as well as the Al Pesto, mozzarella and pesto, is very nice. Get the garlic knots too—oh so delicious and garlicky, just as they should be.
The pizza is delicious! Really disappointed to come back and find they have dramatically reduced the size of the slices, but not the prices. Bad move! Id much rather have paid a little more for a real slice than the old price for a little square.UPDATE: Returned to Viva recently to find the slices are back to the old size. Still great pizza with vegan options and yummy crusts.
I usually love the food here, but this review is for delivery. Im writing as I wait for my pizza to warm up in my oven. It arrived cold. It took over an hour. The side of meatballs which came with tomato sauce the last time I ordered it came with no sauce, cold. There were 4 meatballs. The last time there were 5. I called them and they said theyd give me a discount on my next order- sorry they got too busy. And what if I dont want to order again?
The service can be a little prickly, but in terms of vegan pizza, these folks really give Two Boots a run for their money. They say they can make anything on their (delicious) menu vegan. I recommend a vegan meatball and sausage pizza, especially. And the desserts are out of this world good-- some of the best vegan cheesecake and peanut butter pie in the city, for sure!
Honestly was underwhelmed with the selection of vegan pizzas. The nonna di martino was delightful but the zen was really off in taste, flavor and texture, same with the classic cheese. If they want to offer vegan pizza, I think there could be a lot of improvement here.
This place is fantastic. Great vegan options; four when I visited. Wish I took pics but I got the vegetariana, Fresca, and the seasonal vegetable one. Thin crust, healthy, delicious. Of course if you want it saltier or with more garlic, there’s a condiment bar. I’ll definitely be back whenever I have to shop in this area. Ginger and lemonades are also fantastic
Grabbed two vegan nomaggio slices.. incredible & pretty light. Not sure what kind of cheese they use, I assume it’s homemade, but it’s delicious. Creamy & not hard on the stomach as other vegan cheeses are. I only wish it were thicker & not thin crust all around, but that’s the glutton in me. Regardless this joint fulfills all my pizza cravings. Next time I want to try the Mother Earth & those vegan calzones - didn’t have room to fit those bad boys in this trip. Keep doing what you’re doing guys. Thanks for being vegan inclusive in an otherwise animal product heavy UWS.
I was craving whole wheat vegan pizza and trough google near me we just found the most clean, well presented pizza spot. I must confess is the best pizza we have ever had, it was so yummy and well balanced quality ingredients and their crust OMG you have to try it. The guy at register was so nice to explain me everything. STOP READING AND GO HAVE THE BEST WHOLE WHEAT PIZZA OF YOUR LIFE!!😋😍👩🏻🍳👨🏻🍳❤️
I am fairly new to the vegan food world. Realized I have a delayed dairy allergy that causes long term issues like asthma, nasal congestion and small rashes. I used to adore pizza and cheese. So grateful to have a place like Cafe Viva. Tried a slice just now and its yummy and healthier because of the veggies. Thank you!
Good selection, including Gluten free pizzas but the layout is lacking and the ordering process could be redone. You order your pizza in the front of the store, walk to the back to tell the cashier what you ordered and pay for it, and then walk back to the front to pick up your pizza. Theres a big support column in the middle which adds to the awkwardness of the exchange. The cashier should be next to the order counter so that ordering and paying are a single process. The place could also use a refresh as its beginning to show wear. The pizzas are really good
The best Kosher pizza place on the upper west side! Huge variety of Healthy options, delicious fresh pasta dishes, salads and the calzones are made to order Fresh!I always stop by when Im around .I sent all my out of the city friends there when in the area and they cant thank me enough.Cafe Viva is A WINNER!
Great vegetarian and vegan pizza and pasta too! My favorite vegan pizzas they have are the spicy Mother Earth pizza; mushroom, pesto, garlic, and crumbled tofu Zen pizza; and the classic Nomaggio vegan cheese slices. All of them come standard on a spelt crust or whole wheat crust.Definitely a quick service pizza place with good delivery too.
Just moved into the area! Been plant based for almost 5 years now & boy am I lucky to have stumbled into here!! The BEST vegan/GF pizzas. The pasta options look incredible as well. The day they make a Buffalo-Chickpea GF Vegan pizza, I will literally only eat here. Every day. Thank you cafe viva!!!!!!
Wide selection of pizza including whole wheat, spelt, gluten free, vegan, vegetarian. Tasty, but Im personally not a fan of pizza with cornmeal on the bottom. Its my go to spot for raw dough to bake pizzas at home.Since the pizzas are premium, Id say this place is $$ rather than $, as far as pizza goes.
Our experience at Cafe Viva was FABULOUS ! This place has a huge selection of the BEST food in NYC. We have frequented many pizza places on the Upper East and Upper West Side and this place is our favorite. The menu is full of so many healthy, delicious options. We highly recommend it.
Gluten free pizza. They have good gluten free pizza. The day I went, three gf choics were available. If you are really allergic to gluten, cross contamination could be an issue here. He used the same pizza cutter for the GF pizza as he did for the regular pizza, he just wiped it off. They did use tinfoil under the slice to put it in the oven. But I was getting pizza for a few people, some not gluten free, and they put the regular and gf slices in the same box touching each other. When I expressed my concern they did put clean gf pieces in the oven.
This used to be one of my favorite places in the city for vegan pizza. However, I went in a few weeks ago and was very disappointed by my usual order. I ordered the vegan sausage and pepper stromboli and received something that was drowning in sauce and had a scant amount of peppers and vegan sausage. Also, CV no longer uses Daiya and went back to Follow Your Hearts mozzarella. The same can be said for the slice of nomaggio (plain vegan cheese slice) that I ordered; a skimpy coating of FYH and a crust that needed work.
Cafe viva may look like a regular pizzeria from the outside, but theyre serving up deliciousness and wholesome food on the inside. Being gluten and dairy free its hard to find pizzerias to accommodate that, but cafe viva does and theyre originality for pizza toppings makes it that much better. I forget what my fav one is called, but it was a gluten free first they had topped with pesto, mushrooms, eggplant and vegan cheese. Soooo delish!
Café Viva, nestled into a busy pocket of the Upper West Side, offers pizza in an unspectacular way. A glass display allows patrons to inspect the pizzas and calzones for sale, and the cramped arrangement of tables and chairs makes for a less-than-ideal dining location.During one of dog days of summer in 2018, my wife and I, having just submitted our application for an apartment in the Bronx, decided to take a chance on Cafe Viva for a late lunch on our way back downtown. We ended up ordering a pizza and some lemonade, and while the drink was sweet and delicious, the vegetables on the pizza were cold and flavorless while the sauce was hot enough to make my mouth feel like an open sore. The crust was flat and burnt on its underside. Nothing about this pizza tasted like it was seasoned at all, and I wouldnt have been surprised if the kitchen admitted they sauteed the toppings in water to save on oil, or that the turning plate in their microwave was broken from overuse resulting in the steaming trash heap they sold to me that day.Much like many of you who might be reading this lengthy review for a pizzeria, Ive had pizza of different styles and flavors routinely throughout my life all across this country and many others, and I had never had a pizza that tasted so bad that I could write a scathing review about it six months after the fact while recalling many of the harrowing details until the day I put that sick joke of a pizza from Cafe Viva in my mouth. Aside from the lemonade, the only fond memory I have from that day is the great apartment I got in Riverdale soon after.TL;DR: Dont go here.
This review is similar to ones I just read concerning delivery. I am not sure how cafe viva operates when you eat in, but from my delivery experience I can assure you there are better options out there. I ordered pizza/pasta for delivery specifically so that I would not have to walk outside in the freezing cold at night. However, when the employee delivering the food called to say he was here, he refused to find my dorm (despite me explaining clearly how easy it was to find from his location) and hung up on me mid-sentence. I called the restaurant and explained what happened, and when they attempted to call the employee, he did not answer their calls. I then hung up and proceeded to call him again myself, until lo-and-behold, he found my dorm and was waiting downstairs. I went down to get the food and while obviously I knew the situation was unfortunate I tried to be nice and understanding, however the employee rudely shoved the bag into my face, and before I could say another word he was out the door. Best of all, the food was COLD. I called the restaurant back to explain my frustration (with the rude attitude and cold food) and all I received was if the food was delivered within the delivery time then Im not sure what you want me to do...a good business knows to help the customer out when they have made a mistake, and while I would have been forgiving if they made an effort to correct their mistakes, sadly I did not get any apology/solution to this error. Do not order from this restaurant.
Food is good. But if you order delivery and asking for utensils, ether by phone, or on line, they almost never send it to you. They just dont care. Today they bought me a soup without spoon. I called them and ask how to eat it. Im not home, Im at work. When I asked what did I pay my tip for if I had such a poor service, I was told that its a delivery fee, although they advertise free delivery. After all they promised to send utensils, but never did it.
Open very late, came here after being out. Huge pizza pieces, got the special (cost more than the one of the standard). There were lots of choices to choose from. Had the typical pepper and powder cheese. Quite a few spots to eat at even though the area was naturally small and narrow. Tables slightly used, understandable... place was packed.
Into healthy food and feel like pizza? This is the place. Whole grain (not just wheat) crusts with healthy toppings (or fillings), including dairy free options. The space could use some revitalization, but its utilitarian, and central park is nearby for a takeout location.
Ive easily had pizza over 1,500 times in my life since Ive been born so you can say Im a bit of a pizza connoisseur. Anyway, viva pizza is not only the best kosher pizza on the market (note: they are open on shabbat), but they offer the single greatest slice of pizza known to mankind, and in the tri-state area, named after your oldest relative, because shes the saltiest... The Grandma Slice (La Nona).Mmmmmmmmmm... grandma slice.
I dont recommend ordering here at all. Not only did the food take TWO HOURS to arrive, the food was terrible. My eggplant sandwich was absolutely raw and inedible. It couldve given me serious food poisoning. When I called to complain, the guy told me that it couldnt be raw because it was pre-cooked! Gross! If that was pre-cooked, what else is precooked? He tried to tell me thats what grilled eggplant tastes like... no buddy, it was raw and inedible. Finally, he did agree to send the guy to take back the sandwich and refund me. Did he? Nope. Thats how they treat their customers. Im sure theres much better italian in the area.
It is said that customers leave higher ratings for a company that makes a mistake and responds well than a company that doesnt make a mistake. I ordered eggplant parm from here a week ago and it came undercooked. The pasta was great though so I didnt go hungry. They refunded me in full and I came back for more.
Ok pizza. Horrible customer service. I don’t usually leave bad reviews, but I was extremely disappointed with my experience. Didn’t appreciate getting kicked off the line 3 times because they told me to keep re-reading a wrong label they put on their window. Hope they get it together. I won’t be back
Anyone who knows me knows I love marshmallow. It is my Kryptonite, my soft spot, my wet dreams, my weakness, and the key to my heart.Im allergic to shellfish but if a menu read marshmallow incrusted crab Id order it and eat it on route to a hospital. So its no surprise Sweet & Sara is my heaven!Saras marshmallows are simply the most decedent you will ever have. And on top of that they are vegan, but dont let that description fool you. From regular vanilla, to toasted coconut covered, and even my favorite cinnamon pecan, which is infused with organic cinnamon and toped off with caramelized pecans. These little morsels are creamy, soft, flavored, irresistible pillows of nom nom nom! Perfect for baking, adding to hot chocolate, having as a simple snack or for making smores. And speaking of smores, Sweet & Sara went and one-upped that wonderful creation. Their Peanut Butter Smores are a little peice of ah-mazing in your mouth! With a sweet layer of smooth peanut butter atop a yummy graham cracker cookie which of course sits under their fluffy marshmallow goodness and wait for it......all covered in a decadent layer of Belgian dark chocolate.May I also suggest their biscotti and macaroons that way there are more marshmallows for me!
Im taking my Business elsewhere. They ignored me One Two many times and are Rude to me ., One two many Times. I give respect and Expect Respect.Plus, A few weeks ago one of the cash register workers, Consumed my Slice of Pizza. He gave me a different slice. Ive been mulling this over, Its way too many.Best
It is simply great. Large selection. Food is delicious. A bit crowded some times. But is is worthy if you have to wait just a little bit. Let me repeat it again- the food in this place taste delicious. But not only that, it is healthy and great for vegetarians as well.

2021-07-27The pizza is so fresh and delicious! We added broccoli & mushrooms and there were PLENTY of veggies on top. So fresh and not greasy at all. The whole wheat calzone with spinach, garlic and broccoli was out of this world. I was skeptical about a “whole wheat” calzone, but it definitely surpassed my expectations. Best Kosher pizza! 10/10

2022-01-08I have been eating pizza from Viva since I was a child. There is definitely nowhere else like it in the world. They are accommodating of all diets, even if you’re not health conscious! My family always gets the Azteca with marinara sauce added, and I have grown to love the Mother Earth slice. My mom loves their soy pepperoni.I just give them a ring to arrange either pick up or delivery, it’s the easiest way (in my opinion)! Definitely try them out if you haven’t already!!Side note, the chefs have a separate tip jar, right above the glass pizza display.

2021-10-15Cafe Viva is a neighborhood classic. It is also the only pizzeria we know that offers VEGAN pizza. We have never heard of vegan cheese before we stopped by. It was absolutely incredible to include all diets. They even have gluten free crust, whole wheat crust, spelt crust… literally did not even know a pizzeria could offer so many options while considering your diet. They even have a stuffed cheese crust. It was insanely delicious. This spot can get busy during lunch time as many locals working in the area will stop by for a fresh slice of pizza. We tried a few slices. The zen pizza was truly unique. It had tofu instead of cheese. There were so many toppings, it was loaded!! You honestly get more than you paid for. Another slice caught us by surprise with the cheesy crust. We finished every last bite of it. The alla vodka pizza was SUPER saucy. If you love penne alla vodka sauce, you would love this pizza. It was perfect. We also tried two house-made drinks. They use alkaline water to make their lemonades. Not regular water.. alkaline!! You can tell the owners care a lot about the quality and ingredients. We ended off our meal with a slice of chocolate cake. It was so moist and melty, there is no better way to end off our meal.

2022-06-23I loooove the fact that they offer vegan, gluten free pizza - such a rarity. I give them all the kudos in the world for that, however, the pizza was extremely bland (and not bc it’s vegan + gluten free), especially considering all of the toppings on it. It tasted like nothing (and I don’t have COVID). I ordered the Zen vegetarian pizza - I can’t recommend that, but I may try another option next time.

2022-06-20I walked in once without knowing that it was a vegan/veggie speciality pizza place and ordered a slice of La Nonna.omg. first bite. so good. so flavorful. so rich.a week later, I ordered a whole pie of it to my house and to my disappointment it was SO SALTY.I went back to get an individual slice, and it was good again, though this time the piece was much thinner.Looks like consistency is not their best, but Ill take the chances to keep getting that first good slice once in a while.

2022-05-21I lived in New York for two years and this was my go to for gluten free pizza. I visited for my rescheduled graduation his past week and didn’t know how much I missed it until I visited again. My only gripe is the price. My friend got one slice and it was like $4 I got two a vegan GF and a cheese and it was $14. But I guess that’s par for the course when you have allergies. Just sucks.

2022-04-25Such an amazing spot! Delicious pizzas with fresh and healthy ingredients, beautiful pasta, fresh juices and decadent desserts. All in a great location in the UWS with fast service and a smile 🍕🍝😍 Standouts were the Zen, Mother Earth and Vegetale - will definitely be back again soon! 💕

2018-01-16Excellent kosher and vegetarian pizza place with unique toppings for vegetarians. They also have great seitan with pasta. They have tons of vegan pizza options and also a variety of special crusts for gluten free individuals. If you like normal pizza, they also have dairy cheese and classic wheat and whole wheat crust. Its nice to be able to have pizza topped with tasty vegetarian proteins. I recommend the wheat cutlet (seitan).

2019-11-27Theres not another pizza place like Cafe Viva! They have regular slices, but the real reason you come here is for the incredible pizza options - whole wheat, cauliflower crusts, all the vegetables and the other toppings. My favorite is the Zen. FYI - its kosher dairy so no meat here.
