This business provided that charm that I thought was long lost in Manhattan in general. I was cheerfully greeted by the unassuming owners, enchanted by the ambiance, friendly vibe, lit candles, veggie options, delicious food in general and even better cocktails. I would take my partner, friends, siblings, picky parents, friends, and/or anyone I was looking to convince that NYC is the place to be.
The owner is welcoming, hard working. Said he works 7 days a week and his business reflects that. The female waitresses and the servers were polite. The main male waiter with the beard was rude and had bad service edict, but I think the overall experience was still impressive. Well seasoned, beautifully prepared food. Excellent technique. Props back of house staff. Would definitely recommend this place with a clear conscience to others
Easily a top 10 favorite. Tremendous wait staff and bartenders. Ambiance is fun, friendly, romantic at night and relaxed during the day. Menus designed well with good variety of tasty apps and mains - suitable for all dietary prefs - and at a friendly range of price points. (You can go all out or go modest and its gonna be great regardless.)When first hearing of this place, I was told Take a special girl there, and while its a great date spot, you can have fun solo as well. Theyve got seats behind the bar, too, which makes for a fun dynamic. The interior design and layout make for happy, energetic (yet relaxed,) friendly folks.Highly recommend.
Love this place - this has become my go to spot in lower Manhattan for almost any occasion from happy hours to work lunches and group dinners. The food is consistently good and along with a great wine list the cocktails are also fantastic. The service is always friendly and spot on and the owner is awesome as well. The high-top seating around the bar is also a great touch and really unique. Will be back soon!
It is unbeknownst to me why this place has such high reviews. The host was EXTREMELY rude and the food was not even slightly more than mediocre. I was the first of my party to arrive. We we originally a table of 4 but 2 people backed out last minute as they were feeling under the weather. I told the host once I got there to which he replied “I had a table of four for you. Now you’re making me lose money. Great. Thank you.” I repeatedly apologized to him but he continued saying the same thing. Once my friend arrived (who had made the reservation) she apologized profusely as well. He told her the same thing. Not even 2 minutes after my friend and I sat down he had filled the table for 2. The bruschetta was supposed to have mozzarella on it but it was more like a store bought ricotta. The Caesar salad was also not good. This place is definitely not for authentic Italian. The server was a very nice woman though.
What a lovely restaurant! Canto has it all. Service, check! Food, check! Vibe, check! My boyfriend and I came here on date night and we really enjoyed our experience. The octopus carpaccio was to die for and the lamb shank risotto just warmed my entire body. They even have these cute little window seats where you can enjoy a private conversation while people watching. Definitely coming back!
Four of us went here on Thursday night to celebrate a birthday dinner. The food was amazing but the biggest take away is how rushed we felt by the servers. Four different people ask us if we were ready to order every 2 minutes for our mains and dessert. Put such a damper on the night as we ordered a lot of food and beverages. Literally got interrupted while giving the guest of honor her gift. Was not a great experience despite the food being great.
Went to dinner with a large group (including a child) and for an intimate girls dinner. Had the best time! Service was exceptional for both party sizes. staff was friendly and attentive and very knowledgeable about menu. Atmosphere is upscale casual, trendy- but not pretentious at all. Saving the best for last… the food! The food is tremendous. Haven’t had lasagna this good since last time in Italy. The short ribs, mussels were also highlights. They make the bread in house and they were very generous with filling up. It has a neighborhood feel, with home cooked food and is somewhere I wish I could eat every night!
This is one of the most authentic Italian Restaurant experiences I’ve had in a while. The owner Djmel was present and worked the room like a pro. He greeted everyone in the room and didn’t leave a table “unturned”. If you haven’t been then make Canto your next reservation!!
Canto is everything that you could want in an NYC Italian restaurant. In an area like the West Village, with big name staples like Carbone and LArtusi, Canto is a hidden gem with an inviting staff and tremendous food. The bartender was one of the best I have ever had at a bar/restaurant and all of the dishes we had were outstanding! Thanks for the entire team and ownership for making our dinner a fantastic experience!
Had the best experience at Canto! The restaurant is small but cozy. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. Djamel the owner could not have been more accommodating. We sat at the bar and immediately made friends with the party next to us.The food: So delicious and fresh. We shared arancini (crispy, not at all mushy) and the flavorful kale salad. I had the Tagliatelle Bolognese which was indeed the BEST bolognese I’ve ever had. Great food at reasonable prices. One of the best, if not THE best dining experiences I’ve had in NYC!
I went with an open mind to try this new kid on the block.I was a bit disappointed. The establishment is tiny almost claustrophobic, the tables are very close to one another especially in these pandemic times ,you can practically the neighbors conversation.I had bruschetta,it was soggy ,almost stale tomatoes. My companion had caprese ai funghi she wasnt a fan of saucy baked mushroom.the Cesar salad was ok needed more anchovies and egg yoke to my taste. The risotto di agnello at $46.00 a pop is a bit pricey for this less than trattoria, the .arborio was too al dented and too saucy. However we enjoyed our industrial tartufo. The wine list is way too pricey for this type of establishment (trattoria light). We came away disappointed,we may not return for an encore .
I used to go to this Restaurant before when it was Aria. This is a much cleaner place now and the Food & Drinks are one level above. The carbonara and the beet salad were delicious and the cocktails were amazing and original. The place has been opened only 2 months and it was packed on Tuesday night... Great vibes! Well done Canto and good luck!
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Our waitress, despite being very clearly instructed to split the payments in a certain way tried taking from my card the entire bill because she couldn’t be bothered to split it up. This was whilst I was on holiday and using an international card meaning a refund and getting the money back would have been extremely complex. My response was to give a 0.1$ tip. The restaurants response was to fraudulently take a 4$ tip from my card. Avoid avoid avoid avoid
The absolute best Italian fusion with a Mediterranean twist. The food is just incredible. Innovative, and yet it can unexpectedly hit you with some of that nostalgic feels. Every single drink is crafted with such inventive mixology. The drinks are not only beautiful aesthetically but the taste alone will make you want to drink them over and over again. All this paired with the most warm and hospitable staff, quick service and very reasonable pricing - what more could you possibly want?!
Bland disgusting food.If you are a person of color, 🚫 DO NOT GO THERE. They greet you with kindness, seat you and begin to STARE at you your entire stay. Of course the entire rest of the guest are arrogant unfriendly white people 🤢. I wish the world of division never existed but unfortunately it does and it is acidulous and unpleasant. I would never go again 💣😢😢
Canto was everything you want in a West Village brunch spot.Every dish at our table felt thoughtfully created to be as delicious as can be. Almost like dining at a friend’s house, if that friend happened to be a professional chef who wanted to make you all their best recipes. I will personally be dreaming about the fried chicken sandwich until I can dine there again — the chipotle sauce was heaven. The cocktails were unique, tasty, and truly Instagram-worthy beautiful. I had a super yummy Bloody Mary and learned that the chef made the tomato mix from scratch, which just goes with the whole feeling that everything that comes to your table is created with extra care and thoughtfulness. The vibe of the restaurant was cozy and romantic with cute seating options by the window & at the bar, in addition to the standard tables. Bring a date or a group of your best friends here, and I guarantee it won’t disappoint. This isn’t just another random NYC restaurant; Canto is truly special. And I can’t wait to go back!
Love this place!! Wonderful, intimate, cozy but upscale vibe. The food is amazing. Some of my favorites are the Arancini, the short rib app, the lasagna & the DESSERTS! The drinks are also great! All the staff are super knowledgeable and friendly. The owner, Djamel, is the best! A great west village spot!!!!!
I love this place, full stop. Quintessential date spot in the Village, perfect meetup for friends, and Im going to be making it a corporate dinner spot too. Incredible staff, super friendly head chef/GM (whats up Djamel!), and killer food for a price that doesnt break the bank. Do yourself a favor and check it out!
I had family visiting from out of state and I decided to take them to this new spot !Very creative cocktail list and wide range ofItalian wines ! We had a great time and 3 round of drinks ,thanks to the stuff to take so good care of us in this cold January evening .Will definitely be back ASAP
Honestly one of the best if not the best edition to the West Village neighborhood. Do yourself a favor and walk past Dante’s into this gem. Canto’s food is superb and tops anything you can find. Best part they aren’t their to gouge your wallet. The specials were plentiful and divine. Went seafood heavy and was not disappointed. Scallops, octopus crudo and seafood papardelle. Finished with the chocolate souffle. Definitely will be a regular. Ask to sit at the doublesided bar table. What a unique but fun way to dine. Djamel and his staff make you feel welcome from the moment you step in to the moment you roll out.
Went for a date night dinner. Food was decent but our server was sarcastic and rude after I told him I’m vegan. He brought me a salad with cheese, forgot a side order of Brussel sprouts, and brought my pasta without a sauce. Every course had an issue.I’m surprised that Canto does not have a vegan option when they offer a whole section of vegetarian options. Missed opportunity.
New Italian spot that opened up in the west village. I visited for their soft opening and the food was incredible, especially for the price. My fiancé and I tried the parmigiana di melanzane, fusilli al pesto, and the chocolate soufflé. This place is a perfect date night spot and we will definitely be visiting again!!

2022-07-11We had such a great experience at Canto! I started with the frozen espresso martini which was delicious. For the second drink I ordered the Monte Carlo, which is very refreshing! We ordered three small plates to share, including the bruschetta which was very flavorful. For dessert, I highly recommend the chocolate soufflé! Staff were very attentive and vibe is very laid-back and cozy. We went on a Friday and it did get a bit loud as it got busy. If that going to be an issue, consider coming on a quieter night.

2022-05-18I came here yesterday with family for an early dinner and it was amazing! We ordered the octopus carpaccio, lamb shank risotto, tuna tartar, and more, and every dish was phenomenal. The cocktails were also very unique and I especially loved the “on the beet”. Canto is a must-try restaurant in West Village!!

2022-07-27I had seen the frozen espresso martinis on social media and wanted to try them. They didn’t disappoint. We came for brunch and I got the chicken sandwich which was also really good. I definitely want to come back for dinner since their dinner menu looked really good.

2022-05-24I have lived in NYC for 5 years and this is one of the my favorite Italian restaurants downtown. The pasta was unreal, the drinks were amazing and the desserts were *chefs kiss*. The owner Djamel is also the sweetest - makes you feel like you’re at home.

2022-05-07Canto made me feel like, after dating hundreds of restaurants all over NYC, I’d finally found the place I wanted to marry. First, the food. It took restraint not to order another round of arancini (rice balls) they were so good. A Sicilian grandma would weep with jealousy. I found it inconceivable that a dish as relatively simple as the fusilli al pesto e zucchini could be packed with such rich and nuanced flavor. The bucatini alla carbonara was creamy, pancetta-packed bliss. The special, a branzino finished with some sort of butter and caper sauce over mashed potatoes and spinach, came out piping hot and was perfectly cooked - a great compliment to the pastas. The desert menu is filled with thoughtfully chosen temptations but I only tried the cheesecake, which was light and textured and just sweet enough, and - a first for me - the top was lightly flambéed like a crème brûlée, perhaps a subtle nod to Djamel’s (the owner) French roots. Djamel himself is an epic host. A smile and attention for every patron. The team he’s assembled are all kind, quick, efficient and fun, which is probably why the ambiance is such a win. The music was so good I wanted to find their playlist on Spotify. This is the kind of place that deserves to be a West Village classic, a perennial destination. Don’t go just for a glass of wine and a 2 hour chat with your friend. There are plenty of places for that, like Vin sur Vingt or Cafe Cluny. Go to Canto with an appetite as big as Djamel’s personality. Get something from every part of the menu. Don’t just have tap water. Order a dirty martini or a Negroni and a bottle of wine, which are perfectly chosen to pair with the exceptional, comfortable and perfectly executed menu. Tip more than you usually do. A restaurant this generous deserves your generosity. Dinner was so memorable that I went back the morning after for brunch. I guess that makes me a regular.

2022-04-03This place treats you like family. The owner sat at our table and chatted with us as we waited. They accommodated a table for 8 east-peasy. The food was exactly what it should have been. We were needy and asked for bread as we waited - not only did they bring bread but they brought a tomato cheese dipping sauce to accompany it. Quality place with a welcoming aesthetic.
