Food was amazing! Our first time coming here for Mothers Day with wife and two children, and I must say I was impressed. The service was great, especially for a holiday weekend. Ordered the buffalo shrimp and calamari, delicious! Ordered the cod with crab meat, lthe obster rolls and 2 kids meals as main courses and we just had to share the lobster mac. This lobster mac and cheese, lets just say its like an orgasm in your mouth! Lol its just that good. All the huge chunks of lobster and the gooey cheese, so good. Probably the best $32 mac and cheese i ever had lol Even the kids meals were huge, my older daughter had the kids grilled cheese and it was so cheesy and buttery, my daughter called it a luxury grilled cheese. All the food was great, but the lobster mac and cheese was out of this world. I must say though, it was pricey, but it was worth every penny. 100% Definitely will be back again.
Great service and the food was delicious. Interesting specials, including a crab meat stuffed pretzel. Never had that before. The Ribeye was quite tender and cooked to order. The lobster rolls were really jammed with lobster so a great review for that to. Pretty decent desert menu too. I would strongly suggest making reservations as walk-ins were getting turned down. All together a very nice experience with excellent ambiance if you are sitting outside. On a beautiful day, the Hudson River views are enjoyable watching the personal.water crafts and commercial marine vessels navigate the river.
The Food was Delicious- the manager was unbelievably rudeWe went to dinner here- an early dinner- at 4pm. Everything started out great- the waitress was kind and our first round of drinks came quickly. Unfortunately, what followed was not so great. We ordered appetizers and some came out- some did not. When we asked- they went to check- then we asked again- and it finally came out. We also had to request a second round of drinks and refills on our water three times to three separate staff members. The one appetizer- that took longer- finally came out and dinner came out quickly behind. We then ordered dessert- which came out in a timely manner but the coffee had grinds in it (so much our friend had to pick them out). Our waitress did offer to make a new pot- my friend chose to just finish it. Our bill came out- they did compensate us for the coffee and one dessert- but nothing for the appetizer that took a good half hour longer than the others. When we questioned and asked to speak to the manager- the manager came out with excuses paired with an aggressive demeanor. They did compensate for the pizza- whatever- the compensation wasn’t the big deal- but it was how she spoke to us. After she left, with snide comments, she made it a point (“she” being the manager) to come back to our table to say “and when you come in saying you’re going to be the ‘trouble table’ that doesn’t sit well with me”… again- with an enormous attitude! Now- this comment was made- which I’m sure others have made- as a JOKE to the waitress upon entering as we are a large group of friends out to dinner together. Honestly- to reiterate- it was not about compensating for the food- it was the fact that a manager/owner spoke to (well)-paying customers with such disdain. It’s a shame- I love the food and atmosphere of these restaurant- but after being spoke to by a so-called “leader” like this- we will not be returning to spend another $700. Truly a shame.PS- it truly was NOT the waitress and the manager’s excuses included: the waitress being short-staffed (there were no other tables inside at this point), the bartender slammed her finger, she had only one busboy, etc. Additionally- when we walked out- the bartender made snide comments upon us leaving. The manager/owner continuously spoke to her staff about us- as we could overhear in the small restaurant. Completely unprofessional and unacceptable.Show less
The food tastes great if you can wait long enough to get it. After waiting almost an hour after placing our order, we were told it was almost ready. Then a few minutes later, they let us know the gluten free bread they told us about didn’t exist. Server was non existent otherwise. But it tasted great.
I liked this place alot. It was a little chilly in there, but we were by the waterfont, the doors were open, and people were outside sitting underneath the tent. The staff is friendly, and attentive. The food is amazing. The Sole Francaise was something new for me. Never tried it before, but it was delicious. I recommend trying the Buffalo Shrimp, & Clams Oreganato. I really enjoyed those as appetizers. A nice experience overall!
The staff was super friendly and professional. The food was absolutely amazing. We went today for Fathers Day and had a great time. I got the southwest chicken cutlet sandwich and absolutely loved it!! I also got the tree leches cake which was refreshing and absolutely amazing. Would definitely go again.
Took my wife this past Monday for her birthday. The service was very good, the food just okay. The calamari appetizer was not very good at all nor was my cod with crabmeat. Really no flavor at all. My wife did enjoy seared scallops, though only 4 for entree, and clam chowder was good. My second time there I don’t think I’d return
The food is great, the servers are friendly and the view is beautiful. A great place to come eat and relax.Had the clam chowda and the lobster rolls. Both were extremely good. Keep in mind you get 2 lobster rolls with the meal, so if you split it with your spouse its petty fair priced at $32.Highly recommend coming here. But if you want to sit outside, be sure to get reservations, its very popular.
Captain Jakes was an absolute find, awesome atmosphere, service was excellent and the food spot on! From the appetizer to the desert, everything was perfect! Not many places have we been to recently, where we are already looking to return while we were still at the place we were at, lol. Definitely look forward to coming back ASAP!
I had a date here, and it was a lovely place. It was warm inside the inclosure and not terribly crowded! My waiter was attentive! I tried lobster Parmesan bites and found it to be decent, under seasoned in my opinion. I also had the salmon with mashed potatoes and broccoli. I just found that it could have been a little more seasoned. I usually have an issue with restaurant food being too salty so I’m happy that wasn’t the case. I just found this food to be terribly bland. The mussels fria diavalo was the star of the night for me! I couldn’t get enough and honestly should have made that my meal! It was that good! Perfectly spiced and just perfectly portioned! All in all I had a nice night and the drinks were strong! So I’m happy I came.
Had a bad experience here. Waitress refused to split check from the party after asking her to (from the very beginning) Then we payed our bill with the correct amount spent (we had very little to eat drink) we tried to leave and the staff all blocked the exit and made us feel terrible. It was very unprofessional and created a lot of anxiety.
Very unprofessional. Would not accommodate a party of 12 for separate checks. When we went in to try to talk to them the hostess was one not with the mostess. She was very rude and turned us away stating are you the reservation that wanted separate checks? We gave away your reservation. Woukd not recommend for parties over two!!
Their seafood dishes are really great so is there pasta dishes my daughter loved her chicken piccata the plans tequila is out of the this world unfortunately the parking is terrible its hit-and-miss if you get a space if not you have to park blocks away its cheaper than blue point bigger portions than blue point
Excellent service! Almost too good 😂. All of the service staff was very attentive. My server was Nicole-- who was very friendly and helpful. I was impressed. I was dining out solo (first time visiting Newburgh) and really wanted to find lobster. I havent had lobster in Maine for a while (so I cant make an accurate comparison), but given that it is off season (dead of winter) and not New England, the lobster and clam chowder was pretty good!! Food came out quick and there is a beautiful view of the Hudson River.
Nice location. Great river view. Casual atmosphere. The fish and chips were good but I think if you have fish and chips on the menu you should have at least one stout available to go with them. The amber ale was good. The waitress was friendly but the service was very slow.
Great Food, relaxing atmosphere, nice views, sit by the water. Great seafood place with good appetizers and drink specials on the water front..Only reason I didnt give 5 stars was because the food took a little long to come out. But everything else was great. I love their lobster rolls!
The food and service are excellent. The view is breathtaking and peaceful. They great food at great price. The portions are big. The seafood is fresh and delicious. I asked a local at Prospect Hills Orchard for their recommendation and that was the restaurant of their choice. Locals know best and I am glad that I had the opportunity to taste and experience such delightful place and great price. Amazing server. People are very welcoming and kind. I highly recommend going to this restaurant — simply amazing!
We didnt have an RSVP, but we were still able to have a table. For appetizer, we had the fried calamari and it was delicious. Fried shrimp is my go to meal and there were no complaints there either. Overall, date night with my wife was beautiful and wonderful. Yes, we would return.
Captain Jakes is a solid go to for a Sunday Funday irrespective of the season. The drinks are always on point, as is the food. My only minor complaint is that the table service is a little slow. Now, this could be due to staffing issues, which has been a problem in the service industry for some time now. Still an overall a winner on the Newburgh Waterfront!
3 stars solely for the food. Take the food off the plate and this visit was a horrible experience. I have been here before and had decent enough experiences to warrant a return visit. Great atmosphere if you can manage sitting outside and getting a view of the river. It is a seafood restaurant so expect a specific type of menu. Again, the food is good. I will say though, I felt it was way overpriced for what you get. An entree with NO salad or bread? Unfortunately the wait to get our dinner for a party of 2 was 40+ minutes. Unacceptable in my opinion. It was a weekend, but we were seated immediately with no wait, so I dont get the extreme wait time for receiving our dinners. The waitress was not to be seen and also charged us for a different table. Had to void the charge and rerun our card for the proper charge. I dont see another visit Unfortunately.
Me and the wife love the spot it is our go to specifically my go to for seafood always fresh oysters shrimp clams etc. The wife isn’t a big fan of seafood which is OK because they offer a great amount of variety. The staff is superb and I’ll treat you like you’re part of the family food has always been excellent and drinks phenomenal. My favorite time of the year is summer when they have outside seating that you better make a reservations for. between the view and the ambience it’s just a terrific experience and I’d highly recommend Captain Jake’s to anyone and everyone!
I went for the 1st time. Im not sure if its a regular thing but we had to sit outside because we didnt have a reservation. Although the outside has a tent/plastic, its still cold (went in Nov). There were no large outdoor heaters as you could see in neighboring restaurants. The service was slow, we waited a while for food, but the food was good. Prices of things vary, a good selection of options on the menu and dessert menu.
A delightful Sunday lunch where our group of 7 enjoyed a range of dishes from sparkling fresh oysters, to yummy clam chowda, and on to fish and chips, a grilled shrimp and crab wrap, fish tacos, and more. Everything was well prepared and well presented, all with excellent service.Plus a lovely view. Cant wait to return, even if it is an hour from home.
Didn’t know that you needed reservations for this spot. Fortunately the hostess was very accommodating and allowed us to be seated outside. Food was good. Lobster rolls 2 for $33 with fries, could use some more taste but over all good. Fish and chips were good. Beautiful view of the water
First time and i will definitely return. The ambiance is everything. Right by the waterfront. You can sit outside and take in the marvelous view. I wonder what its lije at night...hmm i must try!It was quite busy. Food was on point. Workers do their part. I was happy. Took my bf for lunch on his bday. Perfect. Happy i chose it. He had some big ass crab legs.... I just had a kids meal (which i couldnt eat off) all in all you get your $$ value$
We took my father in law there for his 90th birthday. Sat outside with a nice Hudson river view. Seafood dishes were all reasonably good. Nice atmosphere. Our server was a bit slow. I was a bit surprised that they charged us a plate fee for 5 cake plates & forks when we had spent over $400.00 for the meal.
Our waitress was excellent!! Food was descent. However we were disappointed in the management. We were at a table of 4 with 5 guests and spent just under $1000. With 20% tip included. We were there less then 2 hours and asked to leave as they needed the table. No problem, 500 an hour for the table - not good enough?? I will never go back!!August 29th at 330 pm.
And thats a lil generous went in for lunch for my birthday sat outside ordered the fish and chips and the wife because shes 8mos preg. Ordered a chicken parmigiana and the food was fantastic but we were just stuck on the waitresss insinuations that we were broke she offered us the sandwich menu as to say we couldnt afford the regular priced menu lol and then asked us if the water was all we wanted to drink.... I know she probably didnt mean anything by it but it kind of felt like she did so as my bill was $55 I left her a meager $5 tip lol because remember were broke. Horrible experience and on my bday to boot 🤦♂️
Went on a late Sunday afternoon. We had the Capt Platter and the Twin Lobster rolls. Neither were great. The Capt platter the clams were extremely Salty and drowned in butter. The snow crabs were good but also drowned in Salty garlic butter. The worst though were the lobster rolls which we drove from 20 miles away just for my wife. We asked them to be served with warm butter instead of mayo, and they took more than 40 min to come out. They were horrible. A large amount of tiny pieces with absolutely no flavor. Honestly it didnt even have the slightest lobster taste at all. My wife had only two bites of just lobster meat and then asked me to try them as well. They were not even worth eating and we were hungry.Too bad, not going back.
Nicole is a great bartender but otherwise you are taking your chances. Highly recommend you go to any other establishment on the Newburgh waterfront. The outside patio is not as nice as other places around it and the service (outside the bar) is a complete failure (even when they are not busy). Save your time, money and go to another place for a better experience.
This was the first time that I ate here and overall it was a good experience. The service was very good and the staff was very friendly. I ordered the Lobster Bisque and it was one of the best I have ever eaten. I ordered the Sea Scallops Provecal, but it was so salty that I couldnt eat it. Unfortunately I didnt get the opportunity to send it back because the waiter and waitress didnt come over to ask if everything was ok until quite some time after the food was served. The Potato Croquette was delicious and so was dessert. I would definitely go back, but would not order the Scallops again.
My first time at Captain Jakes. Very good experience the wait staff was there following up even though they were very busy. I ordered the Lazy Mans lobster and was happily enjoying it within 35-40 minutes. My date and I sipped on drinks while waiting and enjoyed the boats going up and down the Hudson River. Nice atmosphere the food was delicious and the lobster was not overcooked. A bit higher end on expenses, but a worthy treat!
Disorganized. The wait staff was friendly, but not attentive. You cant have one runner & two walkers. Maybe this was a test...but you dont send out a bad oyster. 1/2 dozen, not too much. I didnt send it back. I wasnt going to be petty. I didnt eat it. Lol, the scallops are a joke; they tasted & looked frozen. No specifications of what kind, just scallops. Just four little drops you get. Six would make it a plate. Not to mention we got all our food at once. Real disappointment. I dont do Red Lobster, but this place is in the same boat. The nerve to make reservations and be so out of whack with service.
I don’t know how this place has good reviews... if you want a corona friendly place this isn’t it. It is not spaced out accordingly. We did not feel safe. Everyone at the bar is on top of each other, and the atmosphere is dingy and dry. I got the twin lobster rolls, and for the price they taste very plain and have no good sauce on them. This was false advertising according to all of the reviews! It was very underwhelming and a total miss. Won’t be back.
Went for Valentine’s Day dinner, my girlfriend loved the king crab legs, a little pricy but it’s the season I suppose. I ordered the lobster Mac and cheese and honestly couldn’t eat it. Definitely not worth 28 dollars for a small bowl. Dessert was great but didn’t make up for the lobster. Probably won’t come back
This restaurant was suggested to us by a member of the George Washington museum. We were wonderfully surprised. The wait staff were all outstanding. Everyone we met were friendly. The feel of the overall atmosphere was one of a home town go to spot. The food was excellent! I had the shrimp/crabmeat wrap, awesome. My wife had the cob salad. She mentioned that the chicken was cooked to perfection. My grandson had high praise for the grilled cheese and calimari. We would definitely recommend anyone visiting Newburgh NY give it a try. We will be back the next time were down that way.
What a good find by the water!! Not a seafood person, but wife and mom are all about it. Got a number of dishes and everything hit the spot. Drinks were also very tasty, all in all a great experience. Did dinner about 5, so beat the crowds and it was definitely a great time!! WE WILL BE BACK!!
Only problem I had was the fact that certain appetizers are listed price PA. The treasure chest that my wife ordered, turned out to be a platter that really should have been an entree....and it cost $53! Quite the shock when the bill came. A heads up when ordering that would have been nice.Otherwise, all the food we ordered was very good. View was nice, waitresses were great!
My boyfriend and I went to The River Grill for the first time and I can honestly say it will definitely not be our last visit! The food was absolutely delicious the bartender Jake really knows how to mix a drink and our waitress Fallon was an absolute sweetheart! She was Kind and attentive and even though the restaurant was extremely busy, she still made sure to check in with us and make sure we were taken care of. Absolutely one of the best dining experiences I’ve ever had. 10 out of 10! I can’t wait to go back!
Have been here pre covid for many celebrations. Always on the expensive side but didnt mind because the food was always good, and the only really good seafood place in this area. We got take out for my moms birthday and it was horrible!! Mom ordered the scallops for an entree and got 4 scallops!! It was 29.95 for 4 scallops!! They were also under cooked. I ordered the special, fried class, they were like rubber bands!! Couldnt eat them! I dont know if it is under new ownership, but we will not be returning!!
Decided to take a drive up the Hudson from the city. Nice location and decent food. Good view of the Hudson. Went there on Sunday. The bar appears to be very popular as it was standing room only when we got there and stayed that way throughout our meal. Restaurant got busy but there were available tables indoor and outdoor, so minimal wait times. Good size outdoor covered dining area. We stayed inside with the AC as the humidity was quite oppressive that day. Friendly staff and good service. Will be back in September for cooler weather and outdoor dining.
Over the last few months my family has dined at Captain Jakes. I HIGHLY recommend this restaurant! Not only is the food delicious EVERY Time the staff is the BEST Ive experienced in a very long time. Last week we had the pleasure to be served by Nicole who was OUTSTANDING! She was extremely pleasant and frequently checked on our table to make sure every thing was ok. Our previous visits we had the pleasure to be served by Amanda. If anyone ever deserved an award for the BEST SERVER Amanda is deserving of this award hands down! She ALWAYS has a smile on even when she is running from table to table! She does an INCREDIBLE job and she is one of the main reasons we come back. We NEVER feel rushed to eat and leave which is very relaxing. Thank you ALL for doing an OUTSTANDING job! We look forward to dining here again very soon! 10 STARSSteven E Zukose
We went looking for lobster rolls and we found them! We sat outside on a beautiful day and had comfortable attentive service. We both ordered the lobster rolls and were amazed at the quantity of lobster in each. The sprinkling of a little of the lemon vinaigrette salad dressing over the lobster brought out the flavor. Very worth it!
Eat at your own risk! no social distancing at the bar!!! everyone was talking next to each other (1 person on each stool) at the bar area like were not living in a pandemic!!!we had been coming here for at least three years and enjoyed the food every time. the place was clean and had good ambiance. we ordered different dishes (pasta, soup, fish & chips, etc) and never had any problems. A friend mentioned to me previously that she had gone back last summer and the food wasnt good anymore. i thought that maybe that had been an off day for them.fast forward to yesterday, we stopped by to order take out (when i saw what i mentioned at the onset). with high expectations I ordered (2) lobster bisques, (2) clam chowders, and a beet salad. first indicator that i was not going to be happy was when i asked how big was the soup. the hostess said, its a good container size. ummm she meant 8oz for $7 & $8 respectively. ok thats kinda pricey but were already here so whatever. as for the beet salad $10 again pricey. so when we get home to eat... we had salty, watery, oily lobster bisque, and half full container of salad mostly filled with WILTED, BLACK, ROTTING mix greens n very few of the other ingredients!!! i am not even sure we want to try the clam chowder.this is robbery!! these people think that since its take out they can give you garbage food and there is no way to complain!! i was shocked and angered. all this for the great price of $42+.
Capital Jakes was a disappointment this Sunday. Food was not the best: Wilted salad, they put no tomatoes, carrots just lettuces. Service wasnt any better. Capital Jakes has changed they were better in the past. Also the portions are smaller and the prices are higher.
Average seafood restaurant with very good view of river and boats. Server was excellent. Chicken wings were cooked perfectly but the sauce was right out of a jar (and salty). The broiled Cod sandwich came with a burnt bun and the fish was in pieces, not served as a single piece (fillet) of fish. Very tasty though. The french fries were beyond hot (temperature) and were very good. I would recommend this eatery but not with a lot of enthusiasm. Its good, not great. If you want to sit outside by the water to enjoy the ambiance, by all means go. If youre all about the food, maybe youd be better off elsewhere. - The Secret Critic.
The food was excellent. My wife and I shared a dozen oysters - fresh and delicious. She had the crab cake appetizer and I had the shrimp and oyster Poboy. Both were fantastic. The oysters and shrimp in my Poboy were cooked to perfection - the oysters just melted in my mouth! Our waiter was very friendly and attentive. Only reason Im not giving 5 stars is overall lack of attention to detail and the rest of the staff (save one girl aside from our waiter) needs to learn how to smile.
Took my Mom and three kids here tonight. We have never been. But It was absolutely delicious!! We sat outside. The views were superb. My Mother and I had an alcoholic beverage that was called Mermaid Water. Not only did they look so pretty they tasted so good! Our server Jill, She was so pleasant and was extremely attentive. Overall experience was great. We will return for sure!
This place rocked! We sat at the bar and racked up a $200 bill. The raw bar was excellent with an array of oysters. The shucker was so quick, the presentation perfect and the service (which is really big with me) was outstanding! They kept our constant food and drink orders flowing! The Oysters Rockefeller was excellent! We werent even going to order it but read how good it is in other reviews and they werent lying! Nice views, good seating, clean bathroom(!)! We cant wait to go back so I can leave more exclamation points!
I know it’s a seafood restaurant but the steak was full of veins and almost inedible. We ordered takeout and they forgot the gorgonzola sauce, luckily I checked in the parking lot before leaving. The broccoli was bland along with the mashed potatoes, no flavor.I could get a better, tastier steak from Longhorn for less money, and it’s closer to the house. My wife ordered the Atlantic cod with crab meat topped with saffron cream sauce. The Broccoli and mashed potatoes were the same bland no flavor. The salmon was also bland.Overall disappointed with this meal.
Captain Jakes is a nice and comfortable place to enjoy a meal, or to go with a friend to get a glass of Wine.It has a patio that has a stunning view of the Hudson river. A great place to enjoy your meal.During the winter, you can eat indoors, and still enjoy the view of the Hudson. The service is good, and very friendly. At night it is a very comfortable place, and you can come with friends and just relax with a drink, and have a laugh.Oh yes, the food is good here too ;-), and the prices are reasonable. They have good Sea food, and a good bowl of Chowder sits well on a cold winters day. This is a good spot to get a bite before seeing a movie at the Downing Film Center. The restaurant has a nautical theme to it without being kitschy. It also has pictures of old ships sailing on the Hudson.
The food was wonderful! I had the lobster fettuccine and couldnt believe the amount of lobster meat! There was not a single bite that didnt have some in it! My friend and I shared an appetizer of crab cakes and a piece of Oreo cheesecake for dessert both were absolutely delicious! I cant wait to go back!
Not impressed. We weren’t greeted at the door and stood awkwardly until whisked away to a table. Things seemed hectic. Our waiter only took our app order at first even though we were ready to place the full order, realized he was busy and thought what ever we can wait. Ordered 6 little necks and 6 blue point oysters for an app along with calamari. Was delivered 6 cherry stones and 6 little necks. When I pointed out I received the wrong food, I was told to keep it and my oysters would be right out. I didn’t eat the cherry stones as I don’t like them. Watched my oysters sit at the bar as my boyfriend enjoyed his calamari. Finally snagged the waiter as we was running by, and he quickly went and grabbed them. The shrimp scampi was watery and bland and my Alaskan crab legs were good, but no $49 good. The prices weren’t listed and I never had a chance to ask as the hostesses ended up taking our food order as things seemed hectic. My squash risotto was TERRIBLE, plastic tasting and it definitely made a trip to the microwave. The waiter probably spent a total of 40seconds at our table the entire night, I understand he was overwhelmed but we dropped $160 on our meal! I might add I was supposedTo be charged for 6 little necks and 6 oysters as that’s what I originally ordered and the little necks were cheaper and I liked them, but I was charged for the more expensive cherry stones and oysters, at that point we just wantedTo get out of there. Will never visit again which is a shame I was looking forward to maybe having a new seafood spot. The service was terrible, the food was average and prices were rediculius.
I wanted to take my boyfriend out to a nice place for his birthday.. we got there was seated quickly.. however when we got the appetizers the oysters rockafella was terrible, the crab cake tasted like it was taken straight from the ocean. So we waited for the entree which took over an hour.. my daughter asked for a burger well done and when she bit into it , it was completely raw. The ribeye steak was also raw. For the price they charge their food should be much more up to par I will never return to the restaurant even less recommend it to anyone.
Great food and great prices. My only suggestion for improvement would be in regards to the amount of bar staff. During busy times, its common to see one overwhelmed bartender handling the bar and table service for the entire restaurant. As a result, patience is required for wait-time between drinks even if youre sitting at the bar. Also, the draught selection can at times be without much thought. They seem to be at the mercy of their distributor(s)
Great place to come and spend some nice time. warm and hospitable, great raw bar with multiple types of oysters, clams and shrimp. the food is great as well with a large variety of choice to fit any taste. my fish was excellent. service great and the outdoor deck is a treat.
I had the pleasure of dining at Captain Jakes River House last weekend. It was a beautiful day and we had an amazing view of the River. We ordered the Oysters Rockefeller and Fried Calamari for starters. They were unbelievably delicious and fresh. We then had Sole-Franchise and Fish and Chips for our entree’s and shared a bottle Rose. A fabulous meal with exceptional service. I highly recommend eating at Captain Jakes’s... We will be back soon!
The restaurant is nice and the employees are friendly and I’m sure there’s other items on the menu that might of been good however I ordered a $30 dollar jambalaya that was terrible 🤯🤯🤯 it was watery marina sauce on top of rice. It does have a decent amount of shrimp but whatever recipe that they’re using is a big mistake. The other thing that bothered me were the flies- if I’m spending money please hold the flies. I’m not talking about just 1 but it was at least 5 sitting on the outside doors
Awesome..waitress was superb and very friendly.Food blew me off the park...a grand slam.Hosting was very complementing and pleasant. The entrees of steak and buffalo shrimps had me licking my fingers.11 over 10 for the waitress replacing my wifes drink when it was not to my wifes taste.
I visited on a Saturday night in September. The place was very busy but being that I was alone they found me a table with having to wait. The whole restaurant including the bar was full. My server greeted me shortly after serving and I was brought water and bread right away. It took a little while for my server to come back to take my order. I ordered the filet mingon. My food came out after in about 20 minutes. The steak was cooked to my liking, the asparagus was good, but I didnt find the potatoes to my liking. I would go again but I think I would try it on a non weekend night.
The drinks were really good, but dont go here if youre vegetarian. Everyone else loved their food, but we called ahead of time to see if there was an option for me and they swore that they could do everything vegetarian. But, when we got here, there was nothing vegetarian on the menu and I ended up getting the blandest pasta with olive oil because all of the sauces had broth. Even the vegetables had no flavor somehow. If you like seafood then its great, but find somewhere else if someone in your group is vegetarian.
The food was excellent from presentation and the first bite to the last. Service was impeccable. And the view of the Hudson breathtaking! I will definitely be back and bring more friends. And in case you have never tried a potato croquette, you simply must at Captain Jakes.
Food was good, not extraordinary. Plating needs some work, was served risotto that looked like it was scooped from either a days made or made the day before and then nuked. FYI gratuity is included in bill. Service was acceptable, but also not extraordinary. Basically you pay extraordinary prices for an ordinary experience. Maybe they think the view will make up for these things? I dont know, but I was certainly not impressed.
We drove to Newburgh after a hike in Storm King mountain and a visit to the art center. Jakes River House has a nice scenic view of the river, where you can rest and relax while having very good seafood. I had their seafood platter and my friend had fish tacos, both pretty good. The dessert exceeded both of our expectations and was really enjoyable even being pretty food from the large portions. The service was nice and the view enjoyable. The place didnt feel too cramped, though people kept bumping into my friends chair. With all the potential to be a tourist trap, this restaurant is really worth a visit if youre in the area.
Small restaurant, with big taste. There is ample street/lot parking within a minutes walk. There arent any booths, and the bar is nearby, so it can get noisy, but theres a nice view of the marina if you choose to sit outside. Their bread was not very fluffy, but there is some variety and the butter has a sweet taste to it, like Texas Roadhouse butter, without the cinnamon. I highly recommend the crab cakes and surf and turf! I asked for medium rare, and the filet was cooked *exactly* as expected--warm pink center. The lobster tail was served already de-shelled, which was convenient, and the potato croquet was amazing. Overall, I was very impressed and would love to dine here again.
We were excited to dine here, based on the reviews. Unfortunately, we were overall disappointed; the food was bland to unappetizing, and at times the service was slow, although the servers were amiable. The ambience just did not seem relaxing or fun for a dining experience. We love seafood, but, sadly, we wont eat here again.
Filled with boisterous salty sea dogs, this place can easily get on the annoying side. But if youre a yachter on the Hudson, that might suite you fine! The food is on the pricey side but good. The wine selection is nice. The beer on tap solid. Put in a reservation if you want deck seating.
We had high hopes that was faded at the door. As we stood at check in 5x we was asked are we being helped we said no and every one of them said ok let me get the hostess. Now the place is not that big however you would have thought since someone asked they would help by seating us. Next the waitress said asparagus was the vegetable for the night, I was excited however both plates came out with something else that neither of us liked. We had to mention it to the waitress. She said oh they changed it half way through dinner really and you didnt think to mention it it as good customer service or you thought we wouldnt notice. Such a disappointment for a new years eve dinner with the love of my life. Then as we waited 15 minutes for our waitress to come back we had to give our check to another waitress upon leaving we see our waitress sitting outside smoking a cigarette and wish a happy new year. Nevertheless we will not return we have scratch them off the list and will not recommend. Customer service and hospitality is everything.
Excellent food and great service. Try the oyster stew when its offered as a special. Its FRIKKIN AWESOME!The view either from inside the restaurant or on the covered patio on warmer days is spectacular. The view of the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge and the mountains that line the Hudson River are spectacular.
Ordered special of Red Snapper. Was served a large pure thick white fillets that must have been sole? Asked waitress, she stated was White snapper. Nice try but that fish is a small thin fillet and is not snapper it is a porgy and is not really a commercial fish in the US. Poor service. Poor food. Your paying for view. was not offered to change dish or speak with management. Dont go.
Great appetizers.fantastic service.only 1 waitress on but she did the work of 3 & it was after the really busy lunch crowd. She kept right up with all of the patrons.if I owned a restaurant she would b my 1st.choice to hire!!! As usual Capt.Jakea came through again with excellents.
The food was done very well, as were the drinks. The server was quite friendly, but the service overall was quite slow. Seems to me they are either understaffed or terribly disorganized. I would only recommend if you dont mind spending time waiting for service. Again the food was quite good.
I’ve been going there for years the staff was kind and courteous .I asked my waiter how much is the Fisherman’s captain platter he told me one price and charged me another price he.When I got the bill i was surprised I asked him he thought it was funny and then helped me at all with the priced difference plus the portion was small for the high price. He was very rude I won’t go there no more.
Had a bourbon chicken sandwich with side salad. There was only a few people there and it took a long time to get. The salad dressing...blue cheese..was already tossed in the salad...dont like that! ..unless a ceaser salad. Sandwich was tasteless....service overall not so great.
The service is great waitress was amazing hostess was friendly drinks were delicious and the raw clam bar out of this world so fresh and delicious the main dish amazing as well if youre into fresh seafood great drinks this is the place to be at cant wait to go back thanks captain jack for an outstanding service!!!!!

2022-02-06Excellent fresh seafood. Wings are to die for. Fish tacos are amazing. Excellent customer service. Served in a timely manner. Only gripe was my surf and turf steak was a little overcooked. But overall an excellent experience and highly recommended.

2021-11-30I took my family here for my daughters birthday. 4 out of 5 of us love seafood, and were very excited. We were able to make a reservation for a Saturday at 6pm and were seated promptly when we arrived. The service and food were both excellent. We sampled fresh oysters and tried the smoked trout appetizer (highly recommend you can all share - whole fish for $12.95 its awesome). We ordered 4 different seafood entrees and a ravioli special. Everything was spot on. The spacing between everything wasnt rushed and we really enjoyed a great meal together. Well done Captain Jakes!!

2021-10-13Really enjoyed this place. I thought the red sangria tasted better than the white. Split pea soup was delicious. Oysters Rockefeller were very good. The Captains Platter was great! Surf and Turf was cooked just right. The two specials we ordered, I believe one was a halibut piccata and the other a seafood gumbo and they were amazing!! I personally had the gumbo and man I have never had such a delicious seafood stew. The service was really good. Make reservations if you prefer to sit outside especially since its great weather for it right now! Wonderful experience!!

2021-08-08My wife and I on the way home needed dinner after a long day. When a restaurant near Captain Jakes would not take us, Captain Jakes took us without a reservation. We ordered the fish and chips and fish tacos. Both were excellent! Both were cooked to perfection and generous portions. I enjoyed the rice and beans with the tacos. Would definitely choose Captain Jakes over the other restaurant who only accepted reservations but had many many empty tables.

2021-08-15The view outside was so peaceful and scenic. Made our dining experience that much more magical. Drinks were most excellent - the Fig & the fish was so delicious and refreshing. One of the best seafood restaurants Ive been too in the NY/NJ/Conn area. Raw bar on point, big portions and food well cooked. Suggest making a reservation. Worth the drive from NYC. BRAVO 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿

2021-08-08Fully packed waterfront seafood restaurant! It was Saturday night dinner so we made a reservation. We got the best table with the view. It’s a nice place to just hang out so it wasn’t a big deal but the service was very slow. Took 15 minutes to order drinks, another 25 minutes to make order for food and almost an hour to get our food. There were very long periods of time between each visit from the server, so if you ever needed anything, it was a long wait to get it. Thank goodness we asked to serve appetizers and mains at the same time. The first sip of coconut margarita was strong and good but it was a bit too much from the second sip. Oysters were fresh and really good. Buffalo shrimp were overpowered by the sauce. Lobster bisque was okay. Red snapper was very dry and lack of flavor but the potato croquette and broccoli that came with it were good. Lobster roll was pretty blend.Overrated, overpriced and inefficient!!!

2021-08-25Wonderful service, and even better food. The views of the river are stunning. It feels low key even though when we were there it was rather busy. I would highly recommend if youre in the mood for some lobster!

2022-04-26Stopped in Sunday afternoon. Amazing, efficient service from everyone and DELICIOUS food. Everything was so fresh, flavorful and perfectly cooked. We had the Caesar salad, my friend got the Captains Platter, and I got the chicken parm. The chicken parm was amazing! Will definitely be coming back and bringing more people so they can experience how great this place is!!

2021-08-19Always a good meal. Sat at the bar because there were no tables. Bartender and the young man shucking the clams and oysters were wonderful. Friendly attentive and helpful. Great experience.
