I am not very familiar with Mexican food which means I dont eat it a lot. We had an appetizer that was very good it was some type of cheese sauce with homemade chips. I had chicken quesadilla for dinner it was pretty large so I only ate half and we had I think it was cheesecake for dessert which was very rich chocolate cheesecake. 😋 Our waitress that night was Danielle and she was very attentive to our table, extremely polite and could answer any questions that I had about the food since Im not a regular diner on Mexican cuisine. So she made my meal more enjoyable by knowing what I was eating.
Birria tacos are worth all the hype. The rice and beans are also surprisingly flavorful. The rice doesnt look like it has a bunch of spice, but it does, the perfect balance. The beans are smooth and garlicky. We sat outside. The mismatch of furniture is cute, each table set is different.
Why is the best Mexican food in Central NY at a sleepy strip mall in a northern suburb? Your guess is as good as mine, and we may never know. That said this is a cozy comfortable place with incredibly friendly energetic staff, and the food is always excellent, with attractively low pricing for what you get. If their hours become less limited in the future their tacos would be an ideal lunch, super good tortillas and shells.
For delicious homemade food at a great price Carmelitas never disappoints. Most items on the menu are Gluten Free. The owner takes such pride when preparing food. I am thankful for a safe place to eat out. I highly recommend this restaurant if you love fresh healthy food !
What an outstanding meal and outstanding staff. The food was full of flavor and spice, while the drinks (Spicy Margarita) was out of this world. The owner came to check in on us and is so friendly and proud of her establishment. We will definitely be regulars at Carmelita’s as this was a fantastic, authentic, Mexican meal!
Food was pretty ok/descent. After two weeks of having a taste for taquitos and having the worst bad timing with when this place was open, I FINALLY was able to hit this place up when it was open. I went in with the intention of getting my food to go. I live in Lakeshore Heights. It was early Friday evening around 5pm, not too busy. Ordered my food and they told me it be about 20 min. I ordered 2 Modelo Negra beers while I waited for my food and sat outside at their outdoor seating area. The food came up quicker then I expected (12 min) so I made the decision to eat my food at the table because I only managed to get thru half of one beer. Im pretty much giving ⭐⭐⭐ because once they saw that I stayed to eat my food not once did they address me, ask me if I needed anything, come to ask how my food was or ask if I would like anything else. This was my first time here after being referred here over a year ago. Even when I bussed my own table, I was never asked anything about service, food or just engaged when I brought my trash, empty beer bottles into the person behind the counter. Overall they have ok/descent food. It was pretty disappointing to not be engaged on any level coming into a new food establishment other than someone standing behind the counter taking my money. Youd think coming out of covid/lockdown a family owned business would be eager to be interactive with the public 😂...I guess not. Is this the new norm? I hope not!
My wife and I were in town for work. It was time for supper, and we love Mexican food. We did a quick search and found Carmelitas. My wife has a health issue with gluten, so many times it’s difficult to find a restaurant that has gluten free options. Carmelitas has PLENTY of GF options. The food was awesome and we get to drive back to Binghamton without my wife getting sick. We are already planning on returning in the future. Food was amazing and the service was fantastic. 👍
If it takes longer than ten minutes for tacos, its not authentic. I have lived all over this country and in others, my grandfather is from Colombia and my girlfriend is Mexican. This place is shameful to our culture and if Carmelita is a real person, she should over haul management. Odds are though her name is actually Karen, and has never had real Mexican food in her life. Might as well have a taco casserole on the menu too. Next time well get taco bell so its not a 45 minute buuld up to a let down, we already know its sucks but at least it sucks quickly.
This was Horrible. We spent $130 and no one wants to eat it. Very Bland, Chicken bone in the burrito, ordered nachos with no beans, there were beans. Burnt chips and some kind of soggy bread they put my sandwich on. Very disappointed. A lot of money on A lot of food no one is eating.
If youre looking for TexMex this place is not for you. If youre looking for authentic home cooked Mexican food, you will love Carmelitas. Theresa cooks from the heart and her food tastes like it. Great staff, very friendly and courteous. Will keep coming back for more!
Great, authentic food, affordable prices. We were even offered a custom kids meal (small portion of anything on the menu) made to order for our little one. Very generous portions that took now longer than ten minutes to come out! The whole experience was really made by the sincerity and hospitality of the restaurant owner. We were fortunate enough to learn a little bit about the family and history of the restaurant. It really felt like we were guests in her home....if you’re looking for an affordable home cooked meal and a true family experience, this place will give you that and more. Needless to say we will definitely return!
This is a great little gem! We have been looking for a place like this since we moved to New York. Food was very flavorful. Had a nice kick when needed. Very fresh flavors. It felt like family hanging out with Theresa, the owner, who explained the history of her wonderful Mexican heritage. Shredded beef was to die for. We will be back.
It was OK. My meal was very flavorful, but my husbands burrito, not so much. It was very bland to the point that he stopped eating it and went to get fast-food takeout on the ride home. Aside from that, the service was great. I may try them again, but my husband will not be back.
This is a nice local Mexican restaurant that serves good food at good prices. The entrees were generally under $10. The menu is not real complex or sophisticated, but more of a traditional Mexican options. The best part is the menu is well marked for Gluten Free and vegitarian options, both plentiful. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The decor was basic.
If you want real authentic Mexican food! This is your place! Food is incredible and the staff is amazing! Have to try the homemade chips and guacamole. The only reason it didnt get 5 stars is because the wait for food was longer then I would like, but gave me opportunity to spend time with family I guess.
The food is amazing and authentic Mexican cuisine! Its the first good Mexican food weve had since coming from Arizona. The tortillas and tortilla chips are made in the restaurant. My husband and I had the tender and flavorful shredded beef Super Burrito which was smothered in green and red sauce. If youre hungry for Mexican food, look no further. This is the place.
Let me start by saying that REAL Mexican food isn’t trendy tacos and Food Network chefs’ fusion creations. Real Mexican food is comfort food. It’s slow cooked meats infused with flavor, wrapped in flour or corn tortillas with tasty sauces and melted cheeses. It’s creamy refried beans and spicy salsas. And that’s exactly what Theresa is cooking up at Carmelita’s.Theresa’s mom ran a Mexican restaurant down on Spencer st. decades ago and she continues that tradition. This is as real as a Mexican kitchen gets. It’s the equivalent of a French bistro, a family diner, or a mom and pop Italian restaurant. The decor is tasteful and homey. The food is excellent and all homemade. No sombrero-wearing waiters, no gimmicks, and no “restaurant supply” salsas. Just cooking from the heart. We’re so glad we found this place!
The food was ok, not great. When it came time to pay the check, I gave my waitress my credit card, and she came back a couple of minutes later asking if I gave it to her. They spent a half hour looking for it, and in that half hour, the manager came out three times, and in an accusatory tone, and asked if I was sure I gave them my card. It was as if she thought I was trying to pull something on them. Eventually they found it under the stove. I’m definitely not ever going back.
Eaten here a few times now. We go with 3 young children an the staff is always nice and accommodating to are needs with the kids. Food is always great freshly made to order. For the people that complain it takes to long it is made as you order it every time. The real definition of fresh so wait an enjoy yourself
Dont waste your time, service was unacceptable, the waitress that ignored us, brought the wrong drinks, and gave us the wrong bill. The time to prepare the meals was excessive. We left the place hungry with the skimpy size meals. The lemon-aide was very good, but the chips and taco shells tasted like old grease.
First time at Carmelitas in Cicero, we had an appetizer .....excellent, Dinner was Chapultepec and Azteca, both where very fresh and great portions. nice atmosphere. Great service by Melissa always one step ahead. The owner Theresa stoped by our table to see if every thing was satisfactory,Great food , great experience we will be back
LOVE THIS PLACE!!! Delicious fresh authentic mexican food. I recommend the Tinga Nachos. They are sooo good. Owner and servers are always so kind and friendly. Its a real family oriented place. My two young children and I have been there twice and both times were fantastic. Good prices and good portions. We will be back again and again!
After reading all the great reviews I was excited to try it out......wow I was completely surprised definitely not what I was expecting. My daughter couldnt even eat her burrito because the flavor was horrible. What Mexican restaurant doesnt give free chips and salsa????
Late last lunch...2pm..quiet time in restaurant.Everything made to order..all peppers roasted, sauces made from scratch, all taco shells, chips, refried beans etc.Last visit with friend had tacos, Mexican coffee, Mexican soup, breakfast sample of 2 eggs over friend shell, refried beans etc.Excellent food, great conversation with owner/chef.Previous visit...best fish tacos in the area !
It is not real Mexican food, it is the second time that I have been a disappointment, its staff does not speak Spanish, not fresh walmart tortillas, someone knows of a real Mexican restaurant everyone who has gone is too Americanized, you are supposed to go to a Mexican restaurant to eat non-American Mexican food 👎🏼

2021-09-25I just got back from a fantastic Mexican dinner. The chicken enchiladas were so fresh and the flavors were great. The margarita was one of the best I’ve ever had, and the flan for dessert was made perfectly. The flavors for the enchiladas and the flan were wonderful. Definitely going back.

2022-06-29Looking for a new restaurant in the area. I read some of the reviews and thought it would be a good experience. You have lived in California and New Mexico and I would consider myself a very good Mexican cook, of all types. Ill have to say it was a nice restaurant inside and the help was very good. But the chicken enchiladas that my wife and I had were very bad. The chunky tomato sauce salsa that was on there really did not taste like anything I would expect. Had to wind up going to scoops for ice cream to end on a higher note.and have something enjoyable for dinner.I hate to give it such a low review because I love, love Mexican food and so does my family. I could not recommend this place to anybody. Very unfortunate, I do not mean ill by this review but it was not inexpensive and the food was not good. . Good luck going forward.

2021-05-15Hands down the most delicious spicy margarita I have had! I was seriously blown away by the layers of flavor and heat. The food was fresh and tasty. The service was great and I really felt welcomed, like I was a guest at a dinner party, really. This was especially nice because it was Cinco de Mayo and the were super busy but everyone was so awesome and attentive.Definitely going back again.

2019-10-19Lovely little hole in the wall. Friendly service. Nice flavors. Got the guacamole appetizer, obviously homemade chips, on the thick side (which I like). We got taquitos, bean and cheese burritos, and a variety plate of enchiladas (Chile chicken was our favorite). Would come again!
