UpdateI’ve been coming to this place for 5 years. It’s my favorite NYC restaurant. Friendly. Affordable. Delicious. Unique. Extraordinary. We are moving back to Austin and had to visit one last time. Our experience, if possible, was better than our last. We will miss this place. If we visit, it will be our go to restaurant. Please visit. It’s the best.Interesting place. Good wines. Great cheese and meat plates. Fantastic food. Let the waiter pair your food, they do a great job. Very different from the ordinary. This is my absolute favorite restaurant in NYC. Food is amazing. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. I cannot get enough of this place. This is where you bring out of town friends to celebrate special occasions.
Super cute inside, cozy. Staff was nice and helpful. Perfect place to go out with someone, I saw lots of cute couples there! Only downside was I got stood up while surrounded by said cute couples and I officially hate everything. Probably wont go back but its nothing personal, Im just never going out in public ever again in general.
I saw ultimate sexism from this establishment last night.I watched the entire evening unfold. The staff is generally good here, but my best friend N always wears a body cam. My crew ( at the tables) saw blatant discrimination from staff at casaeulla towards a girl with MS who is undergoing a major surgery in a couple of days. The discrimination is unparalleled when it comes to Casellula vs other establishments. This establishment has proven to be honorable in the past. Did their kindness expire?
In Short: This is THE wine spot in HK. You cant do better and itll surpass even your wildest expectations! Dont think twice - just come hungry, thirsty, and ready for an unforgettable experience! Its both intimate and incredible! This is easily the best wine bar in HK! Because hey, lets be honest - weve all been craving a spot in Hells Kitchen with delicious food, a reliable wine list, and killer service. Neither a Mediterranean bar with wine, nor a restaurant with an extensive but vapid list of vino.... NO! We want the real deal! An intimate wine bar that delights us, helps us forget about the stress of the city, activates each of our senses and reminds us that life should be decadently delicious!Though there are a few places that scratch the surface, as a long-term resident I can assure you that nowhere in the neighborhood begins to provide the experience that Casellula gives their diners. Careful thought and planning have clearly been invested into every element of the experience that they provide.Dining here is a dream come true. Here, every aspect of a great night out just fits together. Earlier tonight, my friend and I had the pleasure of bar-side conversation and culinary curation from Tiffany, Jennifer, Kristen, and Vinnie. Together, the strung together a night for the ages!Unlike many wine bars, the menu here details provenance, flavor profiles, and other pertinent information. As a wine lover, you will easily feel at home here. The truth however is that you dont need any prior knowledge because your bartender will happily take it upon herself to match you with the perfect fit. Seeking a wintery red? Theyve got you! Looking for a crisp white? No Problem! How about something sparkly? Sure, why not!One pour and we were sold... but thats just where the fun began! Now, the food menu took front and center, and boy did it deliver! The citrus salad was both simple and refreshing. The endive salad will blow you away with its complex flavors and drizzle of brightness (enough to add cheer to even this grey, post-apocalyptic winter day)! Looking for something hearty? Well, their glorious and yet unpretentious Mac & Cheese will more than hit the spot!At this point, we were several drinks in and bursting at the seams. However, as itd had been a nightmare of a day, we opted for the grand finale - three cheeses to pair with one final last glass of wine. Now for context, my friend and I were drinking the whitest of whites and a full body red - AKA a cheese mongerers worst nightmare. One sampling platter to share and pick up the notes of both glasses? Oh dear!Fret not friends - the crack team at Casellula had it under control! Upon receiving the most beautiful of platters, we were then wowed by the sheer knowledge that was shared with us. Origin, texture, pairings, and a secret extra with each cheese made this the best cheese tasting of my life! (And trust me - Ive both conducted plenty of tastings for work, fun, and have attended several as well. This was truly next level and capable of being an experience within itself)! You can tell when a tasting is done with both love and logic. This one set the bar by which all other cheese tastings shall be measured! And so there you have it folks... A finely curated selection of wine, exceptional food pairings, unbelievably fun service, and an ambiance that will make even the toughest date melt!Casellula earned themselves two new regulars tonight and we will be happy to spread the word. Without questions one of the best dining experiences that I have had anywhere. We are truly blessed to have this here in the heart of Hells Kitchen! Cant wait to return!
I really loved this bar, it was nothing short of delightful. The cheese list is incredible as are the extensive wine offerings. We had a bottle of the Chook Sparkling Shiraz from Australia and everyone loved it. Its certainly not a wine youd see every day. Ill definitely be back!
We had a perfect meal at Casellula. Get the cheese mongers platter and ask them to pair a bottle of something interesting with it. Give yourself over to their expertise and you wont be disappointed! We had a pre-theater meal here and the timing of our food was excellent. Arriving at 5pm gave us plenty of time to have a leisurely meal before making a 7pm show. We would go back again, pre-theater or otherwise, in a heartbeat.
Could have been 5...The bad: There was one server Friday night that was very snobby. He acted like the more senior person, and it would have been whatever if not for the time my boyfriend was mid dessert order -- and he looked away as my boyfriend was ordering. We looked at each other like ...is he listening? so that was kind of a sour note. If Im spending $200 somewhere I expect nicer and to be fair the other people were super niceThe good: The cheese, the wine, the food, the dessert aaamazing. The fromagier prepared a plate for us based on the wine we were having, and she was super nice in explaining the cheese plate. The food was light, dessert and dessert wine wasnt too sweet (100% get the chocolate cake)We would have come back during our NYC visit, but given the unpleasant server we will venture to other sites. Would still recommend.
What theater or dining experience would be complete without enjoying premium cheese, wine and charcuterie at this NYC staple. Always taken care of and the service is impeccable down to the details of each food/cheese pairing all expertly crafted by the fromager. This is one of NYCs treasures you have to discover for yourself.
Generally a quiet spot with a splendid cheese selection and good wine list. The food is great - highly recommend the Brussels sprouts and pigs ass sandwich. They tend to fill up and only seat parties when everyone has arrived.Wine staff and cheese monger are very helpful and have always put together very tasty combinations. Ask them to put together a cheese board and wine selection.
I absolutely love this place! Anytime my husband and me want a relaxing dinner night we come here. Great food, perfect wine choices, and tons of cheese! They are very happy to recommend what pairs well with what, and are very friendly and nice. Their Pigs Ass sandwich is the best thing they have!
Its a cool idea in a good neighborhood, with good cheese and wine. I wish the service were better than it is. The waitress was abrasive and didnt share or perhaps know any good information about the offerings. My date confessed shed tried the place once years ago, received bad service and never gave it another chance until we went -- and it was disappointing again!
This place is really fun. It is quite small. But the wine choices are great and they always do a great job pairing for us. It can get quite noisy when the young drinkers show up and cant handle how loud they talk. Like on Saturday Feb 8th at 830 to 945 PM. The staff is great. Definitely recommend
This place is an unassuming gem in NY. Been here a handful of times and every time is new and exciting. The menu constantly changes and the staff is incredibly knowledgeable. Went here right after my now husband and I got engaged because it was so special to us and they were so lovely to us! Highly recommend!
Definitely a place to go, either for special occasion, date night, or just to meet up with friends. This place is small, but very charming and the food is very good. The staff is very helpful with wine and cheese pairings. We chose a wine and they chose three cheeses, each of which were very good. The Pigs Ass sandwich was meaty, cheesy, and rich. The mac and cheese was gooey to perfection. For dessert, we got the Drunken Grasshopper, which was a cool and refreshing way to end a rich meal.
This place is AWESOME!!!!! Of course they have a great wine and cheese selection, but above and beyond is the staff...thank you Nikki!!!! She rocked! Great little spot in a romantic setting. Food is INCREDIBLE!!!!! Lovely bar and just a few cute tables perfect for a date. Neighborhood staple.
Absolutely love it here. great little place. ive been going here with my s.o. for our date nights, and havent found another place quite like it. it is more of a cheese and wine bar rather than a wine and cheese bar. (although their wine is great as well!) i keep coming back again and again. their food is delicious, and they really know their stuff. usually dessert is a pass—but here, they make really good ones! it is small, but they make up for it with their service and knowledge.
Casellula is one of my absolute favorite places ever. It is perfect for a date night, not for groups. Every time my boyfriend and I have gone, we’re been seated within 10 minutes. I guess it also helps that we don’t mind the bar. We love seeing the chef make their amazing dishes on the one and only tine stove they have there. When you go, opt for the cheese flights and let them choose for you. I’ve never been disappointed by their pairings!ONE MORE THING! Get the Chili Mead… yes that’s right, MEAD- honey wine. It literally changed my life. It’s sweet at the tip and spicy at the back of the throat (insert inappropriate joke here).
Not bougie. Not cramped. Just right.Intimate enough for a couple to feel close- not too tight to make the guests want to get the hell out.Never too noisy.Pleasant staff. And no matter how busy it gets, they never rush you out +++Also, I dont know wine/cheese but I feel like I cant go wrong with anything from their menu. Great to not feel like an idiot with wine :P
The food is quite delicious. I had a really hard time choosing my entree because everything on the menu sounded so good. The cheese selection is very diverse. The servers are great about helping you make a selection. The space is very small and intimate which makes it a good place for date night.
The restaurant has made excellent use of the small and intimate space. Tables set closely together and there is almost always a significant wait during peak hours. But once you do get seated, everything you order will be delicious. The staff is knowledgable and always happy to offer recommendations on both food and wine. Try a customized plate of cheeses and cured meats and the pigs ass sandwich. End with the grasshopper sundae.
The best cheese plate Ive ever eaten. Small and cost place - excellent service. Thats how service should be. The cheese plate is prepared in a very inventive way. The pairings on the plate are surprisingly matching perfect. Let Liv decide which cheese will be served - you will see the passion and experience in every step during preparation and while she presents the plate. If youre looking for the perfect spot for cheese, wine and some warm snacks you absolutely right at Casellula. No free desk? Wait its totally worth it!!
Super cute wine bar in Hells Kitchen. Great selection of wine as well as cheeses and meats. I loved the unique menu offerings as well, such as the pigs ass sandwich. Who would have thought that would appear on a classy wine bars menu? (FYI - so good. Give it a try) - and next time, Im trying dessert.
Very small place, packed tight on a Wednesday night. Waited about 30-40 mins for a seat. My lady and I like red wines so we explained to the lady what we liked and didnt like and she gave us an awesome recommendation. When it came time to sit down, we decided on the cheese and meat platter. Each cheese was paired so well. Everything was So so so good. Pricy yes but worth a try
This is my happy place. The wine list is nice, the staff is fantastic, and whatever they pair their cheese flights with its absolutely brilliant. Of course they also have other wonderful things on the menu, like their take on the Cuban (called the pigs ass sandwich), the chicken liver pate, mac & cheese, miso mustard pickled vegetables (a must), chistorras (another must) and their today cheese truffles. But really, for me, the cheese is the star of the show. Just come early, or prepare to wait, because this place is tiny and popular!
I want to love this place as it ticks all my boxes, Wine and Cheese!, but sadly the service was appalling. There seemed to be about 3-4 wait staff for a very small restaurant but their attitude stunk! They could not care if we were there or not and constantly through the night we had to ask to be served. We had to ask for menus, ask for drinks, ask for meals, all whilst the wait staff were hiding out the back and talking amongst themselves. The attitude was rude and lets this place down sadly. On to the wine and food. There is quite a good selection of wines by the glass and bottle and the staff do actually know about wine so feel free to ask about a wine that takes your fancy. We were after a late supper after seeing a show and Casellula delivered. The menu is limited to mostly sandwiches which at first we were dubious about but we were actually really impressed when they came out. They were most gourmet baguettes and were delicious. There is also a nice selection of cheese available.
Could not have had a better experience with the food and service here. Theres a wide range of sheep and goat milk cheeses, the pairings between the cheeses and their companion pieces are surprising and delightful. I cant eat any cows milk products and I generally expect that to at least limit my choices in the world of cheese, but here it was not a problem at all. With a table of four, the bill would have even been cheap, had we not chosen to drink such a large amount of extremely delicious booze in addition to eating a life-changing amount of cheese. I cannot recommend Casellula highly enough.
This is one of my favorite spots in the HK area! They have an excellent selection of bottles of wine, as well as by the glass. Simply choose your wine and the Fromagerie will pair with the number of cheeses of your choosing. We bring many out of town guests here and have also done this as pre-theatre (I didnt enjoy it as much, as I felt like we were in a hurry). I would recommend the grilled cheese and the mac and cheese for side dishes! This place is small, so make sure you get there early (tables are hard to come by at certain times)...They dont take reservations and require your entire party be present before you are seated.
Location friendly after theater, this place brings good wines and decent cheese selections to lightly finish up the night. overall atmosphere is warm and intimate, yet its not too dark or insanely loud, which i really like. it is a nice place to casually bring a friend or two.
I held my sisters bridal shower at Casellula this weekend, and the whole experience was wonderful. We had the whole restaurant to ourselves for 3 hours at a reasonable price for NY. I worked directly with the general manager and owner throughout the entire planning process and they were insanely helpful, accommodating, and professional. We had a wine and cheese tasting led by the owner and then had lunch. All of the food was great especially the mac and cheese, pigs ass sandwich, and herb popcorn. I was planning the bridal shower from out of town, chose the place sight unseen, and it was perfection. Cant wait for my next trip to visit NY to drop by for drinks or dinner. HIGHLY recommend Casellula for a private party or just for wine and cheese!
Unfortunately I will not be able to give a review about the food, as we (4 guests) decided not to eat at this establishment. We came under strong recommendation from one us who had eaten here before and wanted to introduce the rest of us to this small wine and cheese place. I will not go into the details of our experience, suffice to say that the waiter that was supposed to help us was so rude and made us all feel so unwelcome that after ordering some drinks we unanimously decided to cut our losses and go to eat somewhere else. He took our decision quite in stride and brought us the check. After paying our check a second waiter (a very nice lady) brought us some delicious nut covered chocolates and ask us if everything was OK. We did tell us that unfortunately no, everything was not OK, and that our waiter had been so rude to us that we made the decision to go eat somewhere else. She apologized to us saying that he was not well, and that they had been trying all night long to send him home, but he just would not go. Beside the fact that keeping a sick waiter working may endanger the health of the other workers and of the customers, the owner of this nice establishment should realize that having a waiter mistreating his guests is not a way to get good reviews or return business. I am sorry to have missed dinner here, as the selection of cheese looked really nice.
Amazing place, and although expensive, VERY worth it.Outstanding selection of cheese, usually very well paired and very knowledgeable staff.Speaking of staff, not only do they know their cheese, but they will re-pair one of your cheeses if you thought they didnt go well together.Small, cozy location, great for dates. Although not bad for some solo splurging also!
This is a great spot for a casual date or a more low key pre-game before going out in HK. The food is quite good and the wine list is pretty eclectic for such a small place. My only hang up is that now and again I feel like an imposition to the service staff and, whom I assume, the manager/owner.But go anyway, you aren’t there for them.
My favorite local spot. There is seating for probably 30 people, so I wouldnt recommend coming with a party larger than 4. Also, dont come at 7:00 because there will be a wait. Once you get the timing down, there is a great rotational selection of wine and cheeses. Dont be shy - ask for recommendations and prepare for your tastebuds to go on the best adventure. I thought I hated Gouda until the cheesemonger served me an aged Gouda that blew my mind and changed my life. They know what they are doing there. I also love the small plates (housemade ricotta, goat cheese salad, the pate) and ALL of the sandwiches.
Best wine and cheese pairing in the city. This is the only place I know that serves African Chili Mead which warms my soul making me a better man. Casellula is kind of hidden but definitely a place I come to over and over again. I recommend sitting at the bar so you can watch the chef prepare the delicious house specialties.
I found out about this place thanks to the cast of Mean Girls the musical-- they post about it weekly and gave me serious cheese envy.We had a cheese flight (fromagères selection), Pigs Ass sandwich, pear cider and a beer. All of the food was delicious and the staff was polite, attentive and knowledgeable.I really enjoyed my Caselulla experience. I was able to try cheeses I would have never tried myself and I liked how it came with something to pair with each of them. The fromagère was very sweet and I really liked how she explained each of the cheeses to you before you dug in... she even told you which end of the plate to start at.I can honestly say I have never been anywhere like this before. I would definitely go back again.Just a tip, not a complaint— The location is small and it does fill up quickly so I would go as close to when it opens as possible. They opened at 5:00 and there were already about 10 people inside at 5:10. I understand why-- this place is a gem!
Go here! Eat all the cheese!Came in for dessert and a drink before a show. The cheese truffles were out of control: my friend told me that she loves them more than I love my boyfriend, which was rude, but understandable.Like most New Yorkers I usually avoid Times Square and its environs, but the incredibly warm service and delicious food has me eager to return!
Fresh, soft-ripened, pressed, washed or blue—no matter what kind of cheese you prefer, Casellula is sure to have it. Better still, take advantage of their helpful tasting notes and try something brand new. Cheeses arrive with creative pairings like pickled fennel, lemon-zested hazelnuts and maybe even a glass of something from their vast wine list. Round out your meal with small plates of crostini or perhaps a hearty sandwich. For dessert, sweet potato cake is topped with brown sugar sauce and served with a scoop of butter pecan-ice cream for just the right amount of sweetness. The cozy dining room is warm with flickering candles, wood tables and a delightful staff. Its also small and fills up quickly, so parties of two should make a reservation.
Loved this place! Will definitely go back. The food was great. It is super small; so, get there early because there will likely be somewhat of a wait, but you can drink wine while you wait. :) They do not accept reservations. These are some of the dishes we loved:Stuffed Peppadew Peppers / Buffalo Mozzarella / SpeckChistorras in a Blanket / Radish Pico de GringoFlatbread / Roasted MushroomEndive Salad / Danish Blue / Pear / Macadamia Nuts / Pear Vinaigrette /
Excellent place for a great, simple and light dinner or just after a concert, for an upgraded snack, with excellent cheeses and wines. Its truly a place that is somewhere between fine dining, pub food, and winebar. Great staff, well informed, both about food and wine.
Great and intimate wine bar in Hells Kitchen. Ordered several things including the Chicken Liver Pâté, Wild boar soppressata, as well as the Brie and Formaggino off of the cheese selections. For dessert I ordered the Brûlée baked ricotta. Everything was amazing. For the drinks, I tried the Chili mead thats sweet and spicy. It was like a moscato with a bit of a kick. Highly recommend. Great place for a date or romantic night out with that special someone.
Super place we stumbled across out our Towncar window coming in from EWR. Packed with diverse crowd looking for a place to sample a decently sized and reasonably priced wine list, a large cheese selection, plus yummy range of warm and cold plates. Tightly packed and full of energy. Wait staff courteous and efficient - knowledgable about their offerings. Great find in Hells Kitchen thats open late for pre or post theatre, or just all-round good time!
The cheese and wine here kick ass, simply stated. I want to love this place more, but about half the time I come here, the servers have a disenchanted air about them. Its not just one or two specific people, either, so its become apparent its not something the management focuses on with their hiring practices.
My wife and I were looking for a little wine and some light food before seeing Neil Young at Carnegie Hall. Casellula was the perfect choice. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere warm and cozy. We picked a couple wines, but depended on the expert staff for a cheese flight. The cheese and seasonal pairings, such as a rosemary white chocolate fudge, were excellent. I especially loved the blue cheese from Massachusetts. Heads up: Its easy to miss since the location is just off 9th avenue, on 52nd. The sign isnt easy to see from 9th.
Everything about Casellula is artisan. A small space with a small, knowledgeable staff cooking in a kitchen about the size of the one in my first apartment. Deliciously interesting eats served along side an well thought through wine list makes this a great date spot or evening out with a couple friends.. If you dont mind a small wait, that is.
Very unprofessional!!!! I have been there with a friend. We split the bill. She paid cash, I paid by card. I have noticed that they had charged me 47$, instead of 41$. I reported this unfair and illegal behavior to AmEx and expect them to give me back the money. I know 6$ is not much, but I do not like to be treated like this. Pay attention on what they charge you!
I went to Casellula in November, 2015 for a special occasion, along with 4 others. Because they dont take reservations, we arrived just after it opened for the evening. Five of us were seated at a table for two, despite the fact that a two-top and a three-top were empty and could be pushed together. Because we were literally knee to knee and elbow to elbow, (it felt like being in the middle seat on an airplane), I asked if we could be moved. I was politely but firmly told that this was not possible. Within a half hour, the two tables that I had asked for were taken by...yes, five people. The management apparently felt that more money was to be made by seating separate, smaller parties. Ive not been treated this way at any other establishment, and regret having chosen Casellula.

2022-08-17I have NEVER had a bad experience here. Its great for date night, business meeting, a glass of wine and light bites after a show or just having lunch/dinner solo. The cheese selection is amazing and is constantly rotating and at just $10 per cheese selection, you can get a many or a few as you want. The wine selection is vast and delicious. The pig as$ sandwich, mac & cheese, goat cheese truffles and chocolate cake are some of my favorites. This last time our bartender was Anthony and he was incredible. He talked us through wine selections and made really great suggestions. I cannot recommend this place enough. Its a bit of a hole in the wall which I like but that means it can get a little crowded at times as seating is minimal inside. However, they do offer outdoor seating now so check that out if inside is a little busy!

2021-12-08Great cheese and accompaniments! The pairings with the cheese ranged from sweet to savory with many unique combinations that worked wonderfully together. A great place to grab a glass of wine and chat with a friend. Great ambiance. Make a reservation to get ideal seating. Outdoor seating is cute but probably better for warmer weather.

2022-02-25This place is phenomenal. Ive been 3 tines. Every time I am amazed by the knowledge of the wait staff, the quality of the cheese and the fantastic pairings they make with cheese such as applebutter, carrot puree, chocolate, chutney. All the pairings work so well. The staff are super friendly. Its expensive - $60 for 6 cheeses!! But its worth it for a date night, business meeting or nice addition to cocktail night.

2022-03-07Was absolutely stunned by the gorgeous pairings we received after ordering the fromagère’s picks. The variety was incredible—we had cheese from around the world in all different varieties that all came with genius complements. I’ve truly never had anything quite like it even after traveling extensively through Europe. The wine list and other selections were also to die for. I will not hesitate to come back hungry, with friends!

2022-04-24My partner and I pop in to Casellula every few months or so. I bring people in from my law firm after work as well. After lock down lifted, we noticed businesses trying to be better/nicer to customers. Theyre was a general sense of camaraderie. We had all gone through the same hell together. Last week, I went to Casellula with a colleague and I was thoroughly disgusted with the way the barman was treating customers. He couldnt bring himself to be polite to the patrons, and we actually saw a customer being bullied by him and another employee. I mentioned this experience to my partner and he had a similar experience with this employee when he visited a few weeks back. My colleague and I closed our checks and left. That barman lost 3 customers that day, and most likely the patron they were bullying. There were only a few people there at the time, but discretion is not their strong point. Politeness is not on their menu at all. We overheard a little of the conversation, and it seemed as though it was an attack on the customer stemming from the barmans personal issues. I had to write this because as it turns out, my partner knows that particular customer professionally. Its pretty sad to see people like that being employed in customer service. Weve had our fill of that place period.

2022-06-30Perfection. If you love a cozy atmosphere, wine, and cheese PLUS a knowledgeable staff, you will be in heaven here. Great spot for pre-theatre drinks and apps plus a nice little walk to Broadway or theatre row afterwards.

2019-12-06Small place with a great atmosphere. Extremely knowledgeable staff made for a real experience at the table. The pairing with preserves, provisions and breads was wonderful and thought out. Super fun they even made mozzarella table-side while we were there. Been back several times and will continue to be a favorite in NYC.
