Chelsea International Hostel in New York
I travel alot the best hostel ever. My room was so clean you could eat of the floor. Walking bare feet and my feet were clean. The front desk was helpful about activities in the area. Very safe inside and a nice block with the NEW YORK CITY 10 district police station down the street. Larry the General manager was very comterble to be around. Just a great experience.
Relatively clean, but tiny rooms. No bedbugs or roaches, so that’s a plus, but a duvet cover wouldn’t be too crazy to be included.New York accomodation prices are insane, so compared to that this place is good value, even if you would be able to stay in a 4/5 star hotel in most parts of the world from the same budget. It would make the experience better if after paying hundreds for a room they would include a lock for the lockers (of course you can buy one for 10$ over the addtional 5$ for using the locker).
1. staff : the old man was very rude and not kind. He makes the first image of hostel terrible. He even shouted to me. The hostel owner should fire him or teach him the manner of staff. I was very angry with his attitude toward the guest.2. the locker : the hostel has locker in basement but you should pay 5 bucks and carry your own padlock. or not, you should buy padlock for 10 bucks. they are too stingy.3. the blanket : New Yorks winter is very very cold. But you should sleep with very thin blanket and sheet. It was very unreasonable factor in cold winter. they are not interested about your bedding.4. the shower room : the shower room has bad condition. so the water is not enough for you to wash your hair. the water amount is too small to wash your hair. This hostel has the only thing is location. And others are terrible.
My second stay at Chelsea was as delightful as the first. Squeaky clean, great location for exploring Midtown or Lower Manhattan, good balance between security and ease of entry/exit, 3 blocks to the subway, 1/2 block to 8th Ave buses, and surprisingly quiet (at night anyway, as early morning can be quite noisy with doors opening/closing/slamming, but thats a feature of every hostel). And for ~$70/night its just an incredible value for NYC. RECOMMENDED 100%!
The hostel is good and well-located.Unfortunately we visited NY for new year and it was freezing. The heater would turn off in the middle of the night, we would wake up freezing, I would send an email to the hostel and they would respond the heating system turns on and off automatically (it was 20 degrees F outside). You could feel the freezing wind by standing next to the window. We left the hostel sick, my husband with angina. After several complaints, they gave us a partial refund. The staff is nice and available 24/7
This is a very clean and inexpensive hostel! It had rooms for females only if preferred. They are 24 hours which made it convenient to check in. It is right across the street from the police station, so you feel safe. It is close to the subway and is in the Chelsea district.
Good area for cooking, socialising and tv’s in all of the common rooms. The room (I stayed in a 4 person room) was clean and had a bathroom to itself, which was spacious, the room had a locker for each person. The staff were polite but strict on when to leave the common areas (which close at 11pm which was fair). I had a good stay, a great place for if you’re looking to meet people and travel around the city with a safe space to leave your belongings. Make sure you get a lock for the locker - got one for $3 from target 10 mins away. Can imagine it would be great in summer 😊
Bizarre service from the old guy with moustache and glasses. When I checked in, he was incredibly rude and treating me like an idiot. When I checked out, he was friendly. Dude needs to give me one or the other hahahaha. Other than that, good clean rooms and bathrooms, decent facilities, everything was good
They dont keep air conditioner filters in working condition. In the room I stayed 1 night in you cant open window. Fan is through the air conditioner. Nyc hostels are few expensive and bad because the state and city authorities only collect taxes and fees but dont do their work. Stinks. Despite great location Stay away.
I was in this hostel for 15 minutes. I tried to check-in at 12:30am but they said I was a no-show and they had canceled my reservation 15 minutes ago at 12:15am. They allegedly had no way to reverse this. I wouldnt stay here until they fix this issue. However, I saw 3 other guests in the hostel in those 15 minutes and none of them were happy with the experience. One was having trouble withdrawing cash because this hostel ONLY accepts cash even though they make no mention of that ahead of time. Another guest was not able to get into his room because they gave him the wrong keys (incompetent front desk staff again). And finally, someone else showed up after me to check in that was also listed as a no-show (they make no mention of this policy in any of their emails or website). Please dont give this place your money unless you want to support a supremely hostile business run by incompetent and rude employees.
Ive stayed in hostels before so I understand they are small, and loud and mostly just an inexpensive place to sleep. This place is awful. Staff didnt even make eye contact when I checked in. The beds are ridiculously uncomfortable. My whole body hurts from 2 nights in these awful beds. Words cannot convey how uncomfortable they are. I would rather have slept on the floor, but its crooked. The mattresses visibly sag and the beds squeak very loud every single time you move. Its very loud here. There is some loud awful banging that happens randomly throughout the night. And then starting around 7 it gets even louder and is hourly. I am exhausted. And not in a fun, Im in NYC kind of tired. Seriously, dont stay here. There are many other options and I wouldnt stay here again unless it were free.
The rooms are spartan, and the blankets are thin, but you probably didnt come to NYC to hang out in your room and write in your journal did you? Please DO NOT buy one of their low quality $10 locks, they are NOT secure, and when I tried to warn the desk person and ask for a refund, he was completely apathetic and refused to give me a refund, go to the hardware store around the corner instead
You definitely get the value that you pay for. You are essentially paying for a clean bed and access to a bathroom. Dont expect much more than that. The bed sheets are minimalist and the heaters work well but make lots of noise. Definitely a decent option for a restrained budget.
I found the rooms to be clean and the staff friendly and present, if less involved than at some other hostels. There isnt the strong social atmosphere that exists at some others. But for a cheap and worry free place to stay in an excellent location, its very hard to beat. One cannot expect an exultant breakfast but that is also weaker compared to some other hostels at similar price points and at similarly prime locations. Ive stayed at hostels, on couches, and luxury hotels or boutiques, depending on the circumstances. Id stay here again.
The bed were not comfortable at all, every time we moved on the mattress it made a lot of noise and it sinked in. There was noise late at night and at 6:30am.The body towels were small, there were no hand towel or floor towels to use after shower (what makes the room wet).Only one outlet in a bedroom for 2 people. No a/c or heat.
The location has fantastic! Good price. Stayed in a 2-bed mens room and my roommate was awesome! Despite his only speaking Russian, Google Translate helps a great deal! A+ I plan on staying in that same formation again weekly as I frequently travel to NYC as I plan on moving here soon.
We stayed at the chelsea for a total of five nights on two seperate occasions. first time we were in room B1, ground floor, private room, double bed. room was basic but met our needs easily, having a sink. It was quite noisy at night until the adjacent kitchen was closed at midnight ,sometimes groups congregate here, whilst drinking alcohol, which can be annoying if you want to be early to sleep & early to rise. But we took ear plugs so we were prepared. The one thing we werent prepared for was the banging of the iron piping when the radiator came on. The radiators are the old cast iron type, and they were full of air, hence the banging which was LOUD. the heating system needs bleeding of air. having said that, the banging stopped after 5 minutes, and the air in the pipes didnt affect the warmth coming from the radiator as it was tropical in the bedroom! so much so, we HAD to sleep with the window open. Not a problem as west 20th st was a lot quieter than I expected it to be.bathroom and kitchen were both clean & coffee was available and they do free pizza on wednesdays.the second room was on the 3rd floor , E11, no heating noise here and not much noise from the adjacent rooms. the downside is you have 2 flights of stairs to negotiate. All in all this hostel is not without its flaws, but given the price, I think its a fair deal and would stay here again.
It is the absolute worst hostel I ever stayed in. The staff is not friendly and sometimes hard to understand. The kitchen has no oven no cutting board no cutting knife and only one fork and one breakfast knife. The beds are two short (I am 1.83 cm tall). When we checked out we asked them to store flour luggage for 2 hours and they said it would be 5 bucks. DONT STAY THERE
Very comfortable place to stay on a budget in NYC (I opted for a private room). Free breakfast & nice interior patio area outdoors. Great place to meet other travelers & get ideas for the best things to do & places to go. Im old enough to be the average guests parent, but was never made to feel uncomfortable. The facilities are old, but very clean. There is a communal kitchen & if you have food in the fridge you dont have to worry about it. Just be sure to label it. Ive actually stayed here twice & will probably be back (unless I win the lottery & can afford a luxury hotel).
I had such a great time here! It was all clean and the staff was very friendly. It is perfectly located, in the heart of Manhattan. Once I left the hostel, got a coffee to go and was just walking around and there I was already next to the Empire State Building. I highly recommend this place! Next time I’m in New York, I’ll make sure to stay here again!
Spent three nights here with one night in a single and the other two in a shared room with a friend. Both rooms were simple, clean, and effective. The staff was friendly and helpful. Breakfast of a bagel, fruit and cereal was included and served as a good start to the day.My only cons for the stay were the temperature control of the room was difficult, and the shower took a while to warm. We stayed in October and the radiator made the room very hot but opening a window made it comfortable.Overall would recommend this experience to anyone wanting a great location for a place to sleep.
Overall 3.5 starsLocation: 5 stars, most of midtown and downtown Manhattan can be reached by foot and 3 subway stations close. Lots of food stores and takeouts close by tooPrice: 5 stars, pretty much the cheapest place to stayCleanliness: 3.5, its a bit run down, peeling wall paper etc but the bedsheets and pillow were clean which is whats important for me. You can also swap your sheets and pillow for clean ones whenever you want after you uses them.Other comments:free brekfast is nice, very friendly staff and maids. My radiator was broke in my room and was constantly on full blast so it was very hot all the time. I had to have my window always open which made it very loud since it was by the main road. Im sure it was just a problem with my room though. It was recommended to put valuables in lockers even in a private room which was a red flag since the only other people in there should be house cleaning. I left some valuables outside my locker throughout the trip and nothing happened to them so ill give them the benefit of the doubt.Overall, if the radiator problem was fixed I would definitely recommend this to any travellers and backpackers on a budget for sure 👍
Four stars, a shrug, and a reminder to bring your passport or else. The accommodations are what I expect from a hostel - pretty bare bones but adequate. The building was clearly old but in okay shape. My shared room was small and clean - other reviewers have mentioned bugs, but I didnt see any. The bed was small and a little hard. The breakfast was bagels, coffee, and fruit, and got crowded enough that I skipped the bagel rather than wait. The staff were nice to me but pretty salty with a dude who didnt have a passport (theyre really not kidding about that requirement, even for US citizens). If you want cheap lodging in a good location, this is a fine option. If you want something fancy, dont stay at a hostel.
The hostel location is ideal, is near the subway and you also can take a walk around.I went twice, both times I booked a private room. Rooms are small and count with a locker to keep your personal stuff, the hygiene is perfect. They provide a basic breakfast (coffee/juice - a bagel and a fruit), but is fair enough to start the day. The people at the reception are varied, but most of them are kind (I had few uncomfortable moments). I recommend it!
Most affordable place thats centrally located, thousands of businesses are walking distance. I stayed in a single occupancy room and found it adequate. The lockers are very convenient. Just remember to bring your passport..... if you dont bring your passport, then youre not staying here, even as an American. This was my first hostel experience and I will eventually stay here again.
I had the single room with shared bathroom, nice and cozy and definitely fitted my needs with enough room to fully unpack. The staff were fantastic, Victoria was excellent at check in and at breakfast there was a smiling face to greet me.The luggage storage is handy downstairs and fits massive bags!
The place is huge, the rooms are clean, and the staff is very friendly. We didnt get to stay for breakfast, so I cant comment except to say that a breakfast is included in the stay. Our room was spartan, but immaculately clean. The short twin bed was comfortable, and did the trick. I got a great nights sleep. If youre traveling with kids, this sadly isnt the place. They wont allow anyone under 18.
Stayed for two nights, clean, comfortable and very good price, i only used to sleep so it works, stayed in a 4 bed shared room and there was no problem, even one day I leave my locker the entire day (6am to 11 pm) with no padlock and open (my mistake) and when I comeback all my stuff was there, also you only shared the bathroom with your roomies, I will stay again the next time I visited NY
Best price quality. Far from being the best hotel I’ve stayed, but unless you can afford luxury, that’s the best option you can get in a decent budget. I stayed in a single room, breakfast wasn’t great, but helped starting the day in a better mood and get to know people. Wednesday pizza is awesome too. People working here are great and even though the rooms are extremely basic (look like a prison cell, really) it has everything you need for a stay in NYC.
I stayed six nights in a basic single room and there was everything I needed.Single room is clean and cozy, inside there is a locker, a sink and some shelves.Very quiet hostel (yes you can sleep well in a hostel in NYC) in a very safe and strategical location. Very hot and clean shower (shared). Only three star because of the man whit glasses at the reception, who was a little rude.
The staff at the check in desk were super friendly and available 24/7! The hostel is in a great location, really useful for me to get around NYC for the first time. The free breakfast was good, a bagel and fruit, along with cereal and juice/coffee. The room was really clean, really good WiFi and AC. Absolutely no complaints for the price I paid! I would stay here again if I were to visit NY again.
This hostel was exactly what we were looking for in a place to stay. The price is INCREDIBLE for New York, the area was lovely and quiet and felt very safe. It was very very clean, something I hadnt really expected. They had people come in and clean the shared bathrooms every day and take out the trash - I was really impressed with their thoroughness. We found a great little diner less than 5 minutes from the hostel called The Dish - highly recommend a visit! And it wasnt far from the subway or Chelsea Market, where we spent the morning one day. We will definitely spend future visits in NYC staying at the Chelsea Intl Hostel.
👏🏻👏🏻 Best hostel in NYC!!! 👏🏻👏🏻I loved my stay here. It was CLEAN, affordable, SAFE, and in a good neighborhood. Not to mention across the street from a police station. I never felt unsafe and I was a female, traveling alone. The safe was friendly and courteous. My roommates were the same. I stayed for 6 nights and had the best experience. I did not use the breakfast service, but I heard that it was not bad at all.If you a great, affordable hostel experience in NYC, this is it!
Ive stayed here a couple times before and its always great- meeting strangers at breakfast or staying to myself, I find its easy to get to and quiet when I want to sleep. The staff are friendly and polite as well as try to help when possible. The lockers downstairs are cheap, secure, and a huge help.
I mean this place is alright. It just doesn’t feel like a normal hostel. I spent two days there and didn’t see anyone else! So there’s no common areas for people to hangout and get to know each other. Facilities wise everything is fine, rooms are ok, bathroom and showers are super small but clean and decent. It just lacked that hostel atmosphere and at $40usd per night it isn’t super cheap.
I stayed in a 4 bed all male dorm with attached washroom. The facilities were well kept. The beds were as comfortable as anything else Ive used in a hostel. Power outlets for each bed, which I find important today. The lockers were a bit small but fit 95% of my stuff except for the clothes bag that fit fine under the bed. I never used the kitchen facilities as I was usually awake too late. Great location.
The man was so nice to let me check in early when I had 0 sleep in over 24 hrs. However when I checked in the room, it was freezing! I had to put a towel under the window to keep the awful draft from coming in.Another con is that there was no shampoo/conditioner/soap available.I thought it was a bit expensive for what it was for a private room. I have had Luxurious rooms with breathtaking views for $80. But I’ve never been to NYC before so maybe that was considered a nice room?Anyway! The people are SUPER sweet and nice. The breakfast hit the spot.I would recommend this hostel to those who want a shared room and a shared room only because of how inexpensive it is. I am afraid a single room is expensive for what it is.
Chelsea International Hostel must be one of the largest hostels in New York City, and from my experience, it’s probably the nicest hostel in NYC. The location is great as it is not far from a couple of subway stations. Actually, I usually walk from Penn Station, which is where you arrive from one of the city’s three airports. There are some larger bunk rooms, but the majority of guest rooms are for four people, with restrooms and showers en suite. The breakfast area is both indoors and outdoors and breakfast is included in the room price.Besides having a great location, friendly ambience, and more than adequate amenities, Chelsea IH is great because of the varied types of people who stay here. It was great to be able to sit at the tables in the courtyard and meet loquacious, interesting international fellow world travelers.
Feel more like a cross between a dorm and a prison than a hostel. No sink in the toilets, you have to wash your hands in the room. Really basic showers and breakfast also uncomfortable beds and hairs on the blanket. Common areas are locked till 7am, have to pay for luggage storage. Staff are unhelpful and just generally mediocre, you can tell they dont want to be there more than anyone else which makes for a bad atmosphere. Spend more and stay elsewhere!
Stayed here a while ago. Its a very basic hostel with a basic breakfast and no decor or colour throughout the rooms. What made this a 1-star review is the fact that the toilet in my room was leaking into the bowl constantly throughout my week stay, meaning the toilet would make a loud sound to refill the tank every minute or so. making it hard to fall asleep for myself and roommates. What was infuriating was the staff refused to fix it despite signs throughout the building stating that leaks should be reported. I have fixed this issue in the past and know for a fact that the replacement part is ~$2 to buy at the store, requires no tools to install, and can be done in about 5 minutes.Would not recommend this place it is well past its heyday and the owners are obviously very cheap and do not care to fix even the most basic issues with the rooms.
Bed is noisy. In my bedroom there were cockroaches. At the last day there wasnt bagels anymore and I got there around 9:30 when coffee time is until 10. They dont offer shower service after checkout. The internet worked fine as well as the lockers, that we rented for 5 bucks and put 2 medium baggage and a backpack.
Dirty, loud, and unwelcoming environment. There were cockroaches crawling throughout the building. The bathroom was hardly large enough to stand up in, let alone shower. The room was hot and damp with inadequate air conditioning. Staff was rude and the atmosphere was hostile. I do NOT recommend.
The hostel was clean and in a very good location, which is what I was most concerned about. The price was reasonable for he accommodations. Yes, everything is barebones and small - particularly the shower area - but thats what I expected. The bed will probably make your back sore, the pillow is nonexistent, and you are given one thin towel. But for a hostel, its just fine, and I had a pleasant stay.
The public spaces leave much to be desired, but honestly an amazing price for such small-occupancy rooms. If you can handle a be shared bathroom, this is a great hostel option. Note that its a multi-building complex of row house units, so the entrance may not be where your entry to your unit is found.
We stayed here during Christmas and stayed in a private room. Its a no frills hostel with clean linens (although.. it had a weird smell), a private bathroom (it was a bit like a student ghetto bathroom) and free breakfast. The windows couldnt close tight in winter and we had to wear our thick winter coats at night (there was a snowstorm that year). Breakfast was big NYC bagel and a fruit. Nice neighbourhood. Staff was friendly and overall it was an alright accommodation for this price in NYC
I stayed two nights in early December and highly enjoyed the experience. Its a great place to stay when youre on a tight budget and just need a place to sleep and get some breakfast. The staff is always helpful and kind, as is their maintenance crew. The hostel is conveniently located near some great shops and several different subway lines. If you want to stay in New York for a few days on a budget, this is a wonderful choice!
I stayed here in February and I was pretty upset that I was the only person here. Hostels are supposed to be social places and it makes travelling alone a lot more fun when you can meet other travelers. When I booked, the site said to be quick because rooms were running out fast - dont lie, its not fair. At least the price was right. Oh and lots of roaches.
Very central location, overall friendly and helpful staff. Its a hostel, so dont expect the amenities of a hotel. Rooms are simple and theres hardly any comfort. Bathroom was clean and functional. Breakfast (a bagel, some jam and juice) is included. We skipped it though and went to a diner around the corner. So if you are looking for a place to sleep in the city, this hostel is one to consider.
Great spot with amazing location. Chesley International Hostel is great place if you want to be in the centre of the city but still save money. The rooms are big and with great view. The staff is really helpful and they will make you feel home. The price is great for this spot. You have everything around you. This area is the best in the city. Enjoy.
Front desk was professional, kind, and friendly. Room was clean. Bathroom was generally clean (or as clean as a hostel bathroom can be). Breakfast was just a bagal, slice of butter, and jam (dont get too excited about free breakfast) that a dude hands out so you only get one, and then theres another room you can go into that has all you can eat/drink cereal, coffee, juice, and milk. Stayed Saturday night in private double only and hostel was quiet.
“ This place is awesome. They clean everyday and the staff is awesome. There is a police station across the street from you. Its in the gay neighborhood which shouldnt be a problem because that leads to less crimes. Pizza parties on Wednesday hosted by the staff. The free breakfast is bagels, fruit, corn flakes, juice and coffee. The E train is just west and north 3 blocks and the 1 train is east and south 2 blocks. Great location only 20 min walk to times square. I recommend this place fully. Enjoy!
First hostel I stayed in so I cant compare it to anything. Its clean, located in an accessible area close to subway stations and buses. Theres no soap, shampoo and stuff like that. They do give you one towel. No face towels or hand towels so stock up on paper towels. Breakfast is included which consists of a bagel, fruit, unlimited cereal, juice and coffee.
Lovely place, felt safe and secure all the time we were there. We stayed from 1st of December until 8th of December. All the staff were very helpful and friendly, lovely touch on Wednesday nights pizza night. Its in a very nice neighborhood, I definitely would stay there again in new York.
Stayed for four nights over New Years in a four person room. We arrived at 11am and got to check in right away. There was a bathroom (sink/shower/toilet) right in the room, as well as an additional sink/mirror outside of the bathroom. A few outlets in the room were broken and the heat was a bit lackluster. Free Wi-Fi was great, and quick enough for basic internet use, although not quite strong enough for a good video chat.A pillow, bath towel, sheets, and thin blanket were provided, but no hand towels or soap. The front desk service was a hit-or-miss as far as customer service, but everything seemed pretty clean in the rooms and in shared spaces.Lockers are available for luggage if needed before check-in or after checking out. They are big enough for any standard suitcases, and cost $3-5 depending on size.Nice neighborhood with lots of little markets and cafes within walking distance. An NYPD location is right across the street, so we felt really safe!Overall a positive experience. By staying at the hostel, we got to spend our trip money on other things, and that made it worth it!
A normal hostel. Basic accomodations, including bed linen and a towel. Breakfast was complimentary as well: it consists on a bagel, a piece of fruit, cereals, coffee and juice. People at front desk could be nicer and more welcoming. The hostel consists of several buildings. They seem relatively old and the floor bends slightly. The is absolutely basic: a bed, a sink and a locker. There is one shared shower per floor and one restroom. There should be more available. It does not have an elevator and the stairs are narrow, making it difficult to carry a baggage. On the other hand, the place is clean a d proper. Good for just sleeping without any additional pretention.
Location is this hostels greatest asset. It is close to the subway, and Chelsea is a great area to stay in.Beware that there are cockroaches! We had 1 large one in our room and many tiny scattering baby cockroaches in the bathroom! They require a passport to check in! This caused some problems during check in, but was ultimately resolved. Bring your passport!Room was tiny, bed linens were clean, and the room had its own A/C.
Last Minute stay while NYC. My 2-day stay was ok all I needed was a bed and shower. Looks dated. Could use a little TLC. Shared a tiny room with my friend. Had lockers to lock up important things. Shared bathrooms with the entire floor seemed like a challenge. I often had to go down a floor just to use the restroom. They do offer you 2 meal tickets in the common room but just cold cereal, coffee and toast. Almost was not allowed to check-in because they said I needed a Passport. Im traveling from CA I dont carry my Passport when I travel within the U.S. but cleared things up with a manager. Felt safe because their was a Police Station across the street.
I stayed for two nights ina private room with a private bathroom. The place is in a nice neighborhood, quiet street and close to great dinning. The room was clean but only had a bed and 4 chairs in it, no night stand no table, no tv just a bed and 4 chairs! You could see the springs through the matteress padding and needles to say it was not much to sleep on. The air conditioner barely kept the room cooler than outside but did better at night. House keeping took a dirty towel from my room but did not make the bed or replace with a clean towel. I was told I had to go to the desk to get another. There is no soap nor toiletries of any kind. Thankfully a cvs on the corner stocks travel size items. It was very noisy at night in the buildin, the hallway doors seamed to slam all night long. Staff was nice and other guests were interesting to chat with. Next time I would spend another 30 a night and get a real hotel room. Was a fair deal but not what I expected!
First the good: Great location, friendly staff, clean room, clean bathroom, relatively affordable for the area, private room had a sink. Cons: Very noisy (couldnt sleep well at night from pipes making clunking noises, then in the morning people were up and about outside my window), shower/bathtub was kinda gross, no soap or shampoo provided anywhere, private room didnt have a desk, room was uncomfortably hot even with heater turned off and window left open all day, bed was uncomfortable and too short (Im only 5 10), small and uninviting common area, minimal kitchen, multiple buildings discourages interaction with other guests. If youre just looking for a place to sleep, this is great. But dont expect to spend much time here hanging out.Definitely nowhere close in quality to most HI hostels... went to six or seven different hostels during this trip and this was the most lackluster one. It wasnt a bad experience, but wasnt a good one either. Just kinda meh.
All right accommodation for a hard-to-beat price.Chelsea Intl Hostel is a cheap, basic hostel with a great location, only 2 blocks away from a couple subway stations. You should not, however, have big expectations for the hostel itself. It serves just fine as a base. I found the rooms to be basic and clean, as you would expect. Toilets and baths are shared with your neighboring rooms, so you may need to plan ahead when you want to take a bath; especially around morning, you can expect it to be occupied a lot.Breakfast is included, but is nothing impressive. One bagel, butter, and a piece of fruit is included per day per person. Not impressive, but it kept be going well into the day.Wi-fi is available in most of the common areas, and worked fine for casual browsing.
It gave an impression to people that it is cheap , but the price is not cheap compared with the hotels nearby . The staff are rude , especially the woman in the front desk The gentlemen is very nice. The shower is normally cold at the night time. only hot for a few hours in the morning . the walls are very thin so sound travels. I will never stay in this kinda place again. it is a hell
Stayed here several times, was never disappointed. friendly staff, clean, free WiFi, free (simple) breakfast. Coming to NYC since 15 years one to two times a year and so far, I could not find a single room less expensive for the same quality. Of course, you cannot expect any luxury for ~55 EUR a night.
For the price, I understand that the room is small and terrible and that the rusty old beds require tenants to be up-to-date on their tetanus shots, but halfway through our stay, they decided to take the AC unit out of our room. The highs were still in the 80s with 60-90% humidity and any knuckle for a brain knows that brick buildings dont cool off. No fan, nothing. We repeatedly asked for it to be reinstalled and were just told no. Just spend a few extra dollars a night and stay literally anywhere else.
Well there are good and bad things about any place but in my opinion the good wayyyy outweighed the bad in this case. The hostel is so centrally located. The staff (particularly the day staff) was super nice and accommodating. I made my reservations in advance and everything was always properly set up on my arrival.I had requested some extra assistance which was more then forthcoming and whenever i had questions about where to find particular services, booking a shuttle to the airport, printing something, they were super helpful and accommodating.Negatives were that in the colder days there was no auto-close on the common area which faces out to the inner garden and it seems that most hostelers from around the world live in barns so it would make the room a bit cold....The breakfast rules are a bit weird because you get a ticket for a begal and a piece of fruit but then you can go to the common area and its all you can eat corn flakes....also there is no trading the ticket for two pieces of fruit instead of 1/1....i find these restrictions a bit weird...The rooms were spotless, the hostel was very quiet, the access was excellent no matter the hour. The toilets and showers were spotless...I would stay here again in a heartbeat....
It was grand. Location is amazing with everything you need near by. Its close to MSG and not far from times Square or the subway. The single private was as basic as you would imagine in new york but its cheap and done the job. It has large lockers where you can leave suitcases etc. Also has computers and printer but all of these cost you. Breakfast is a decent bagel with fruit, cereal, coffee and juice. The other guests were 100%.
This place is a dump. My private room had a crappy, squeeky cot with old looking sheets too short for the mattress. No screen in the window. Holes in the walls. The lock on my door was one of those cheap push-button ones you get for your bathroom door. These are in no way designed or built to be a secure barrier and Id be willing to bet theyre illegal for lodgings to use. I did not feel safe and Im 65. I saw a few people there who didnt much look like travellers, more like unemployed people on the last step before homelessness. The bathroom seemed clean but the floor drained really poorly so I had to step in someone elses dirty shower water. I dont expect a lot from a hostel but all of the others in NY Ive stayed in had a little TV, a proper bed, air conditioning and just in general didnt seem like a flophouse. The staff at the desk I encountered when I checked in were very nice but the guy there when I checked out at 7 am was a nasty little creep who really seemed to hate the world. One other thing I just thought of- the rooms are accessed by several street doors so the staff have no way of knowing who is going in. Again, very cheap substandard locks on DOORS TO THE STREET!! This place is not safe and Id say especially to women-AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE THE PLAGUE!!
Very clean but spartan, and my below-street-level private room smelled like a sweaty teenage boy after PE class (I say this as a mother of sons and former teacher of middle schoolers). I couldnt open the window because a sign warned that if I did, the air conditioner would fall. So, I just kept the a/c on and acclimated to the smell. The room was painted a nice, bright Tuscan yellow, but there was absolutely nothing on the walls except for a mirror over the sink (the only sink is in the room, not with the toilet or shower out in the hall). As with many hostels, they provide a towel, and when you return it with your key, you get your $10 deposit back. Linens, a blanket, and a pillow are also provided. My room had two lockers and three hooks to hang things on. The window sill was my place to put things. No reading lamp, just an overhead and a separate light over the sink. The toilet and shower are located in separate tiny cubicles in the hall by the room, which is good because they are shared with one other room, and this allows people to be using both at once and still have privacy. Im not sure how things are configured for the dormitories or private rooms on other floors.I was only there for one night, so I didnt wind up using any of the common social areas or meeting anyone. The location is excellent, especially if you are traveling in or out of Penn station or taking the Megabus from outside the Javits Center. Theres also an excellent bagel shop, Murrays, three blocks north on 8th Ave, and the High Line and Chelsea Market are an easy walk. This is also a good launching point for points downtown or up to Times Square or Columbus Circle.I didnt sample the free breakfast because they serve at 8:00, and my Megabus was leaving at 8:30. So, I grabbed a bagel at Murrays and ate it on a sunny bench on the High Line on my way to the Megabus stop. (A great way to start the morning!)In New York City, you wont find anything cheaper, but compared to hostels in Europe it seems ridiculously overpriced for such basic accommodations. Anywhere else, the private room would be no more than $50-$60, instead of around $90 including all of the taxes. All in all, it was a serviceable, convenient, and adequate place to spend a night or two.
Just what I needed! I saw a mouse but I mean this is also NYC. They had resident kitties who were on the prowl for the vermin. Loved the courtyard area. The lockers are not good if you have a large suitcase (theyre small suitcase/backpack/carry on size). Great area right next to everything including a 10 minute walk to the subway. Id return.
A very nice -and affordable- option to stay in New York. Very well located, away from the “fuzz” of the city, in the residential neighborhood of Chelsea. 3 blocks away from a metro stop and 3 away from the High Line and Flat Iron.Breakfast is included, but it’s a very simple one: bagel, fruit (banana or apple), corn flakes, coffee and juice. But it is more than ok and enough to start the new york experience. The bathroom (in case of the private room I stayed in for two nights), is located in the corridor, toilet separated from the shower.
Great location. Simple room with no stairs, cleaner and safer, but the staff is in general no friendly and sometimes even no educated. The man who checked in was dry and even rude to answer any questions. The cleaning lady begins to sweep the corridors 8 in the morning brushing against the doors of the rooms and making the most noise. The atendendes at breakfast treat guests like convicts in prision. Raraly they smile or say good morning. They begin to remove coffee and sweep and clean the area with the host still eating
They offer cheap services and accommodation, at a not cheap price. You dont get what you pay for. Sometimes (specially during breakfast) you feel like youre in a prison, standing in line for food. Rooms are noisy. Only good thing is the location, its a few blocks from two subway lines and many of Chelseas greatest restaurant as.
The location of this hostel is great, the hostel staff is nice and the room seemed to be clean, but other than that I was very disappointed with this hostel: I booked a private room for 90 USD per night. I didnt mind it being a very basic room, I did mind there was no WiFi reception in the room for this price, for WiFi you need to go to the common area, and between 23.00 and 7.00 (am) the common area is locked and no entrance is allowed....So no WiFi connection possible between 23.00 and 7.00. Further disappointments: there was no soap to be found in the whole hostel to wash your hands; its not possible to open the window in the room because the airconditioning is attached to it (and the room didnt smell very nice so I really wanted to open the window); the airconditioning itself looks old and makes a lot of noise; check-in is at 15.00 and before that time you need to pay for luggage storage; too little hooks in the shower and some were broken and not replaced; the breakfast is a bagel with jam and cereal, theres so much nice food in Manhattan that its much better to go out for breakfast.
The room was nice and clean, the breakfast simple and the pizza party a nice gesture. As a Black American, I met many traveler from different countries that were very friendly however when sitting in the common breakfast area, a lot of folk try to sitting at my table which made me so.e kind a way.
We know that people in NY can sometimes be a bit touchy, but the female person in the Reception of this hostel has been the nastiest, the rudest and the most aggressive I have seen in my life. Saying that she treats people like cattle is optimistic. The rest of the hostel is OK-ish. The Mexicans that work in the kitchen and cleaning are nice though.
It was clean, v.reasonably priced & in a terrific location. The acommadations were rather spartan but for the price I didnt really expect anything fancy anyway. Beware of the stairs though! Theyre v.narrow & rather steep. Also, you need a passport to stay there-No Exceptions. However, if neither of those things are a problem & youre traveling to NYC on a tight budget,I recommend staying here👍
The hostile is close to a lot of different things to do. I stayed here for NYC Comic Con. It said there was air conditioning which I really needed for makeup and cosplay and there wasnt but other than the heat the room was clean and gave me everything promised. The air conditioning was taken out for the time of year but it happen to be over 80 in October. The staff is also very polite and helpful.
Free breakfast every day such as which was unlimited cereals which was what i liked. It had some entertainment value such as comedy nights and such and i got to meet people from all over the world and made a friend there to. Only a 20 minute walk to Times Square though I felt it was a little overpriced for its value.
The staff were really nice and friendly, its decently clean,Close to different metro stationThere was no window in my room so it got stuffyNo elivator, but one of the staff helped me carry my suitcase 2 flights of stairs.QuiteReally basic breakfastAll in all I would recomend it for.
The Good stuff:Large property with a few buildings. The staff is super nice, helpful and knowledgeable. No bunk beds, only single:)I stayed in a 2 person room. 2 beds, lockers and an in room sink. Small bathrooms and showers but thats the norm in NYC. A police station is a few buildings down. Dont forget your breakfast ticket when you check in. 1 bagel, fresh fruit and unlimited cereal and coffee and juice. The common area room fills quickly during peak times but folks are super nice. Shower pressure was strong but slightly uncomfortable. Water got warm quicky. For the price and location its very nice. Want upperscale? Try the local or broadway hostel. For a clean place where you will spend only a few hours sleeping...stay here. The Meh: The room temp can run from extremely hot to slightly chilly. I prefer cooler. THERE IS NO HAND SOAP IN THE ROOM OR PUBLIC RESTROOMS. So no none is washing their hands!! No one! So, think about that... everything is extra germy. BYO Soap. Even if put a note on your food you run the risk of it being eaten. R.I.P my left over shrimp scampi!Overall, Id stay here again. Id rather save money and stay at a clean and safe place. Then I can spend my money on exploring the city.
I strongly recommend you NOT staying here. I had a very stupid discussion with the front desk man, because while I tried to checking in, I had my laptop open. This man, in a rude way asked me to close my laptop because I was making the checking, I refused that, and the man began to talk me in a nervous way. After that, I accepted to stay here this night, since Im very tired, but the room is very basically and the hostel hasnt social area. A friend of mine who has been staying here, commented me that this same man, ask to the people to go to sleep at 11 PM. Come on! Its an hostel. Very rude, bad aptitude and very poor facilities Dont stay here.
First of all THERE ARE ROACHES IN EVERY ROOM! The first room I tried to stay in was dirty, the floors of the bathroom and the room were digusting! I didnt mind the floors because I can avoid them and just wear shoes BUT THEN as I was dropping stuff off after shopping I looked down and saw a roach. Im not afraid of bugs but I dont like roaches, especially nyc roaches. If they get in your stuff they will hide and infest you home when you leave! I was hoping it was a fluke but then there was another on the wall and two in the bathroom. So I went down stairs to the main office to report it and they put me in a new room in a NEW building. Great right? Wrong, this is where it became apparent that they obviously have and infestation! I opened the door and there was a roach on the wall about to crawl onto the bed that was tandem to it. I closed the door and had to carry all of my stuff back up a flight of stairs outside and bqck to the other buolding with the office. I straight up asked the man there if they knew they had and infestation and he reluctantly said yes and apologized. At this point I was done (it was about 1am btw) and tired so I asked for a refund(4nights cost me over $600). Thr man said sure and proceeded to try to give me about $250 saying that he could only refund me for one night. I asked for the manager and he said that I would have to wait until 9am when he would be there. I aske for the managers number and he refused to give it to me. I was tired so I ended up having to spend the night there. I slept with thr lights on and had sleep with all of my belongings on the bed with me in an effort to keep it roach free. At 9am I went to the office and I was refunded everything. It still has not gone through since it takes a couple of business days and it is currently the weekend. So, in conclusion do not stay here stay at the jazz on columbus circle or jazz at the park! I ended up at the jazz at the park and my brother is at the jazz om columbus circle. The columbus circle one is amazing but the park is a great compromise.
If you are not going to stay at a Ritz Carlton or Four Seasons you would be very wise to stay at Chelsea International Hostel. Everything in between the two approaches is not worth it. Chelsea International Hostel is EXCELLENT! Great management, staff, AFFORDABLE and CLEAN. Computers, WiFi, nutritious breakfast at no cost, great location, location, location! Ive stayed here on several occassions and each time there is yet another improvement. Super place to stay!
I spend 5 night there in september, just reading these horrifying comments about the place. It makes me laugh... I cant understand why its not safe? Chelsea is peaceful area, myself at the time I were travelling alone and got no any problems. Its cheap when you consider the location, place really did the job. Anyway, its damn hostel what you expect? Cant make sense with reading all the negative comments about the place. If its not safe, comfortable, just take hotel.... Being 6,2ft tall, beds were too short. Even it was not supposed but yes wifi worked in my room. I recommend this hostel. And definitely going again.
DO NOT STAY HERE. We found bed bugs our second night after noticing some bite marks. We talked to the front desk manager and he was extremely unapologetic. “I’m sorry but this happens in hostels sometimes.” Seriously??? Because they were full we were basically put on the street to find a new place (because we weren’t going to stay there another night). The whole situation was made worse by how unfriendly the front desk was.
I stayed here for a view nights in February 2017. The rooms are simple but relatively clean and the location is really good! One night before I planned to leave I noticed some bites on my arms and neck wich ich thought were bed bugs but I couldnt find any signs of them in or around the bed. I notified the manager that Id leave a night early and that there is a possibility of them having bed bugs in this room (single room) I also said that I wasnt sure about it and I never accused them of anything or wanted my money back. Some time later I called the hostel because I needed a place to stay for one night but the person on the phone told me that Ive been banned from the hostel and would never again be able to book a room there. When asking for the reason I was told that Im not allowed to know that information. The whole situations seems very strange!
The room was average but overpriced. The breakfast was average too(free with room). They mentioned that WiFi is available for free.. And it turns out you have to go to the common area to access it. The only good thing is its location (Manhattan) is close to places of interest.
I had a flight on Tuesday Aug 23 but Ive some problem that make me cant fly, so I headed to this hostel (from JFK to 23st) bc my friends staying on there and theyre recommended me. When I walked in the staff so nice and hes trying to help me everything he can bc that time is a late night (its about 1:30 am) Im very appreciate his help. But the sad thing is I forgot to asked his name and I want to say thank you to him. Everything he did that was helped me a lot and Thats so nice of him Id give front desk 5 stars really, I guarantee that hes the good one and the price thats not bad for NYC. Guest is so nice and theyre have some show every night I think. I didnt have any breakfast with them actually, but theyre included breakfast. You can not use the wifi in your room but the wifi will available in Public areas And theres near by the metro station so you can go anywhere you want by subway. By the way if youre looking places to stay, this is the good one that you can trust.
No in room Wi-Fi, doors lock behind you when going to the bathroom. When the owner has a meeting he will force everyone from the (sparse) lobby into a hallway that barely fits one person in its width. Close to time square, free breakfast. Cheap stay, get what you pay for.
The worst hostel ever!!! I called them 3 times trying to do reservation , they picked up the call , the first associate hanged up even before I talk , the 2 Nd call the guy put me on hold then after 4 minutes he hanged up again , my 3 rd call unfortunately I had to talk to that unprofessional shift manager who was very rude , I told her what happened with the first calls , she didn’t even want to her that and yelled at me and said ! We don’t do reservations on phone ! You have to book online only , I said why she cause there is only one person at the desk ! This is ridiculous, if I could I would never give any star forGarbage hostel
The good thing is that this is very central and if you want to be there much for little money this is one of the best living. One say here WiFi not working. Well I lived in 2 rooms placed in different area. One had okey wifi in room, and free, because the main room for wifi is in breakfast place, first floor. This rented room was placed closed to this breakfast room and I think 60 % of rooms therefore have wifi free. Inside room not luxury but if you accept that this can be a choice for you
A solid place to choose when looking for Manhattan accomodation - decently-sized rooms, a good-enough breakfast and convenient location close to 23rd street subway stations. Free variant of the WiFi is abysmally slow though, barely able to load any more advanced webapps (such as FB Messenger, or Google stuff like Gmail and Photos; Spotify streaming *just about* works), and thats if youre lucky that day.
Dont go there if you want to sleep (noicy) and not be treated like an anmial (breakfast staff). Everything here seams to be bad compared to many other hostels (and I dont care about standards). All signs and information is written in a unfriendly way. Ungenerous and greedy! You dont feel comfortable att all. Not as a International hostel schould be (I have been to many...)
I just turn off my light and only one hour later when I wake up there are 7cockroaches around my bag .some in the bag some on the wall!!!!!!!!! They put me to another room which the door lock is broken. Im pretty depressed that I still have one night to go on.Internet is pretty bad only allow in common room which close at11. That means no wifi after 11.
Cheap prices, but filthy building. Cleaning staff did not speak any english. Check in staff was relatively rude. WiFi did not work either. I definitely would not recommend this place. Get a hotel room outside of the city and take the subway in. You get what you pay for.
Cockroach in my room and I have a video to prove this. I told the staff and they didn’t seem to care. I also saw bed bugs on my last night there. Not only have I spent so much money in New York already, I now have to pay for an exterminator for my house!!!!AVOID STAYING HERE AT ALL COSTS !
BED BUGS! I got bitten in my bed one night a few times and had to use insect repellent during the night. I left an adaptor behind after checkout and the staff member wouldnt even allow me to have a look with one of the staff. I also found the other staff grumpy when asking simple questions like when can I expect the kitchen to be open?

2022-01-13Good location. The building and staff are very old. So dont expect fun here. Its actually got a creepy catholic school vibe even though there is no obvious religious iconography. The showers are cold in the shared bathrooms. Random older people watching old TV shows. But again, good location so you dont have to spend much time here..which I think is the whole point of the business. Pay and get out BUT at 12pm Because were cool in The Chelsea. Just a place in a pinch.

2022-06-23Remember to use ʜoᴛᴇʟʙoʟʟʏ.ᴄᴏm when booking your room. This site will compare thousands of hotel sites and usually will have rooms a lot cheaper than others! Thank me later! This hotel is the best rated in the area. Ive been staying here for a very long time. If you decide to stay here you for sure wont be let down. Our organization flew to NYC to present at the Commission on the Status of Women and decided to stay at the Chelsea International the location of course is awesome. Mostly I decided to write this review to compliment the great staff. From the service at the front desk to the honest room staff and on to the staff making sure that all the common areas were clean THANK YOU. They did a great job welcoming us.An example: We were sitting in the courtyard after hours and a staff person appeared to inform us that the courtyard was closed, he was so polite in asking us to leave. We didnt get his name but our THANKS go out to him, the desk clerk and to the room staff who found my black hand bag I left behind. GRACIAS!We will return and recommend Chelsea International to other folks.GOOD JOB TEAM!!!

2022-01-16Id say a bit below average. The place seemed pretty expensive to me for its overall quality, but of course Im not very familiar with prices in NY so maybe thats just how things are. My room was facing the street, and the blinds wouldnt close completely, so I felt a bit exposed as people could literally look into my room if they tried. Of course, the police station was right across the street, so I felt pretty safe. I guess for a pretty short stay, one or two nights, its okay. Also, I had a huge suitcase, and theres no elevator. Thankfully I was on the first floor so I didnt have to go up many stairs. The place didnt feel that clean, as the building was old, and the staff was okay, some better than others. Overall, I think Id try out some other places, before returning to this one.

2022-05-13Would definitely not come back to this place but it was fine for the one night I stayed here. I had a private room but it was right next to the bathrooms so I heard doors slamming all night and people talking. Keep in mind there is NO AIR CONDITIONING and during May it was wildly hot in my room. I couldn’t leave the window open because the street noise was loud and I was on the first floor.Bathroom was very small and there was only one toilet and one shower shared between four rooms.

2022-04-22Great stay for the price! Very clean, safe neighborhood (the hostel is across the street from a police station), and easily accessible staff. Only reason it’s not a 5 is because it would be nice to have more amenities (hand soap or towels in the bathroom for example), or sound proofing - but you definitely get what you pay for!

2022-06-25OLD OLD building. My keys can barely get the doors open. No elevator and the stairs have tiny steps. The bathroom itself doesn’t have a sink…it’s in your room so I have to wrestle with the doorknob with dirty hands and it is just nasty. The check in desk is this cramped area where only one person can fit. The common areas are the bare minimum, run down and old. I would not spend any time relaxing in them. My mattress is cheap and the frame creaks. There is a single bathroom and shower for my floor. I was staying at HI NYC before this and WHY did I think a location change would be good??I would never stay here again. Do not recommend.

2022-05-19The place was alright if you are looking for somewhere to stay for a night or two.No hot water in the shower on a regular basis, no temperature controls which meant it was always hot and uncomfortable in the room and a police officer from the nearby precinct informed me never to leave valuables in the room as theft was regularly reported from those staying at the hostel. This place is not to bad for distance from sites and subways if you are someone who doesn’t mind walking a distance however if you want somewhere that is more convenient then you should look elsewhere.Overall it is cheap and you get what you pay for but if you are mindful then it may be a perfect for you

2022-06-25This place is cheap (well NYC cheap) for a reason. The rooms are tiny and the building is old and not updated. So, no elevator, dont bring a large bag, and be prepared for the locks to stick. The water temperature in the shared shower was wild, it seemed to be whatever it wanted no matter which way I turned the knob. They do provide linens and a towel (a plus for a hostel) and things were pretty clean. But when they say they dont provide toiletries boy do they mean it because there isnt even soap to wash your hands in the restrooms.I wouldnt stay for the full 14 days they allow, but it was fine for the two nights I needed so i could go to a wedding.
