Food was excellent! Service was great. We had iddly, medu vadai, bajjia for apps. Each was well prepared and delicious. Masala dosa, paper masala dosa, chass to drink, badam halwa for dessert with chennai coffee. Highly recommend this place and am definitely going back.
I am so glad I decided to come here. The food was amazing and delicious. Ordered the appetizer sampler as it was hard to choose just one thing. The different chutneys were delicious. Even the coconut chutney which came with the dosa was good, and I typically do not eat it. Their desserts were the perfect ending to a great meal. Would highly recommend this place over The House of Dosas.
We went here after seeing so many reviews and we were kinda disappointed. It was okay. We opted for the buffet. The rasam was flavorful. The idlis were cold. The lemon rice was very dry. The cabbage poriyal and rasam were average. The mango ice cream and dosa was good. Tomato chutney was really good. Overall it was average.
Fabbbb food and amazing customer service! For appetizers, we had the gobi manchurian which was nice and crisp with just the right amount of sauce in it.Chana Batura, something I always order, was great, as always!Cheese and Onion Chilli Masala Dosa! Something I wanted to try it just because it had cheese in it, was pretty good too. The best was the Onion-Rava Masala Dosa. Something I would recommend to a person trying dosa for the first time. Delicious!Would definitely visit again to check out their buffet varieties.Another time, we stopped by on a Monday night at 9:30 pm, 30 mins before closing just for some filter coffee and chai and we still received the best of customer service. Always delightfully satisfying.
The buffet is very famous over here. The thing which amused me was ,the buffet costs approx $11 whereas a butter masala dosa costs more than $9. The buffet itself contains the masala dosa. Doesnt makes any sense to me why the price of a masala dosa is so high.Apart from this, the restaurant is quite big and very crowded on weekends.Food is of very good quality. Anyone can stop over here for either full meal course or even for a quick bite.
Unlimited Dosas for the lunch buffet. See the attached photo for the type of Dosas available. (One issue I found is that a service charge is added to every bill without adequate notice/information- it appears tip is built in with this service charge)Dosas taste good, there are choices of rice, variety of vegetarian curries available along with ice cream for the buffet. Over all clean Resturant and bathroom (no Indian aroma in the bathroom😅) with Freè parking in front of the Resturant. If it wasnt for the hidden /sneaky service charge I would have give it higher rating. The price for buffet without drinks is about $13 dollars.Update 2/17/20: no service charge automatically added to the as they did a year ago. So I raised my rating 🙂
No longer completely vegetarian. Still very tasty food but this place used be completely vegetarian. Some will rejoice that they now serve chicken, lamb, fish and goat dishes but other will be saddened that a completely vegetarian food place is no longer so. They still have a good enough selection of authentic South Indian vegetarian food and now non vegetarian food makes this place have a plethora of dishes.
We were there an hour ago , took my mom n dad n family for Mother’s Day ..we noticed that a family was there already like ours but after sometime they were directed to go inside into another room where parties take place ..another family came behind us and were setteling down in seats where regular restaurant area was but they where later on directed inside ...we continued sitting but the waiter overlooked us n several others like us who were sitting in the restaurant area ..there seemed no parties going on the other side but I began to wonder ..where they looking at people and their color or attires n judging them as elite and sending them into a desperate area which is better ???... an old man served us water n we waited forever n watched how the waiter was running with his note book to take orders from those who were seated on the special other side ..wondering if that was discrimination or not..later my mom n dad n whole family quietly walked out and nobody asked except the old guy who has served us water and was wiping n cleaning tables..none of the waiters cared....if this was discrimination nobody should be treated like this ever ..we shall never go there ever although we were there several times before
Lovely South Indian cuisine. Their menu has a lot of good choices to choose from. The prices are reasonable as compared to other South Indian restaurants. But I have to say that their customer service is excellent!! It simply stands out! Their entire staff are so courteous and polite.
The food seems average, similar (not better) compared to plenty of other South Indian restaurants in Hicksville area. Do not mean to be rude at all here, but the owner needs to ask waiters to get a haircut, especially the one that has 3+ inch hair sticking out of his ears. I feel bad writing this but the troll look grossed us out. sorry, but cleanliness and presentation is super important in a restaurant, waiters can use a cleanup.
From the first moment you arrive in this restaurant team give you an excellent feeling. Very comfortable crew, it is a friendly place to go out with friends or with your date. Excellent cuisine, qualified chef, competitive cost and attentive service. Warmly recommended.
My favorite Indian restaurant ever. Food is always delicious and there is plenty of it. Have been ordering from here for eight years. Also, they recently catered my wedding and were so helpful helping me decide what to order; they even texted me photos of the trays so I could understand how large each dish was. The food was delicious and the guests are still talking about it.
For AWESOME Vegetarian and Vegan, South Indian food THIS IS THE PLACE TO GO! The food is always delicious, from the dosa, to idli, curries, upma and paratha, served hot and fresh, with amazing coconut chutney and rich sambar. The staff is great too, ask for Sarvinder, who is friendly, courteous, and knowledgeable, making sure that our order arrives quickly, an is perfect every time. Check out the daily buffet, with its ever changing menu, and try something new. You wont be disappointed. Yum!
I normally go to Saravana bhavan at Hicksville. I wanted to try Chennai Dosa based on reviews on Google. The food was good and I felt was better than Saravana bhavan but the wait time was way too long. The guy at the counter said the chef was out and the owner cooked himself. One star less because of the wait time. I was actually impressed by the owner’s work but I thought he could have taken less customers in!
Terribly slow service. It took half an hour for someone to get our order. Ordered Chennai thali and Uttapam came out with wrong ingredients. Ordered extra chapati with South Indian thali and it took half an hour for it to come. By that time my food was done. Although food is good, I would rather go to Sarvana Bhavnan since their service is a hundred times better.
Food wasnt too bad but they accidently gave us some one elses food (took it back before we touched it luckily) and later charged us a $22.69 fee without any explaination. When we called they said it was because we came in with more than four people but didnt tell us that before we came in. Even when we tipped them $30 they didnt say anything about a separate service charge. When we called they were unwilling to help only offering a small discount for a future order. Why would we come back to a shady business? Untrustworthy, raking in over $50 for mediocre service on top of the money we spent on food and drink. There are plenty of other great South Asian restaurants around, dont bother with this one.
We were charged extra 22 bucks for some ‘service fee’ which was under the beverage section in the cheque. Apparently if you have party of more than 4, they charge you around 5 bucks per person for service fees. So I. Total we tipped them around 50 bucks for bad service. I don’t know if anyone had the same experience because it seems they charged extra for nothing. When we called they said they cannot do anything. Never going back here, really disappointed.
They serve authentic food 4/5 rating for that. I have experienced 3 time they over charge me for my food and upon recalculation they said sorry and charged right amount. They also give me childish excuse for that. They have hand written bill PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE CHECK 2 TIMES YOUR BILL BEFORE YOU PAY.
This hurts me to give 1 star but i have no choice. 1) how can you name your restaurant after a dish (dosa) and make such tasteless dosas? No salt, no flavor no nothing. Plus putting the great city of Madras in your name didnt justify what i ate.2) the biggest horror of all is that they used dried desiccated coconut powder to make the coconut chutney. That itself is a reason to cancel this place. Is there no place left in the world that makes coconut chutney from fresh coconuts like they do in India?3) the place is crazy busy but only 1 waiter. Kiran did his best to hold the place and its not his fault.4) the kitchen forgot to give me tomato chutney in all 4 dosa dishes and forgot to give potato masala in one of them. Yes, we got a hurried apology for this major mistake and got the bill when not asked and while we still not finished eating probably cause they wanted the table.5) I absolutely do not recommend this place at all. All the 5 star reviews are mostly from goras (white peeps) who probably never ate an authentic dosa and a real heavenly fresh coconut chutney, so i will forgive them. I wish I could throw up everything I ate. I will check out Dosa World and Mithas on the same road to see if their dosas are any better and if they use real coconut in their chutney (instead of dry coconut powder like this place) in the coming weeks and i will post it here. Rest assured I aint going back to Madras dosas. Its has neither the spirit of Madras nor the taste of dosa. Complete fraud.
If u r into South Indian food, I recommend this place. Quantity is plenty and service is like Badam Halwa so sweet. Upama, Rava Dosai, and mix pakoras are to die for. Secret here is waiter. He is efficient, pleasant, organized and once you are regular, he just treats you like a family. I was recommended by my friend Yatin Doshi and Suce than I am regular. Thursday night that is our home. Why don’t you be regular too
The food was delicious and the portion was large. You can see they are adhering to social distancing guidelines. Some tables have been removed from the center of the restaurant. We ordered the medhu vada/idly sambar in bowl along with butter Masala dosa. I like spicy food and ordered the pondicherry dosa. The potato stuffing was sufficient and I was stuffed by the time I was finished. Prices are fair and was approximately $30 for everything including extra sambar and one soda. Nice sit down in hicksville for dosa. Will definitely visit again.
Awesome Authentic Indian food.My absolute favorite is the PAPER DOSA-every time! It’s huge, delicious and beautiful, it can be a meal or it can be shared by 4-6 people as an appetizer. I have been going here for years and have always have wonderful meals. It’s vegetarian but also most of the menu is vegan as well. With so many interesting options to choose from a meat eater will definitely not miss meat.
The vegetarian food here is amazing. Appetizers, main courses, and desserts are each savory, flavorful and generous in size. The ambiance here is very relaxing and welcoming. Beginning to end, you will feel satisfied with the service. Coming from a meat eater, I highly recommend this place!!
This place is amazing. Make sure to ask for the dosa filling on the side ! Thats a huge tip for all the non indians. Try to rip little bits off the dosa and eat with your hands. It might not be optimal for everyone but, it is customary in south India along with various other parts of the world. I will change my review to 5 star when they bring back the all you can eat lunch buffet that was so popular pre-covid.
Excellent buffet lunch with an invariable profusion of delicious vegetarian dishes.Price is very competitive. That is why it is always crowded, though there are a number of similar restaurants in Hicksville. The wait staff and management is very courteous and responsive, even when packed.Exceptionally good value for money.
On an Indian perspective: Food is authentic Tamil food. Even the utensils are authentic Tamil (sharp metal cups and plates that hurt your lips). Food is as tasty as Tamil food gets. The tea and coffee is fairly good too.On an American perspective: Dont take your jackets into the restaurant unless you want it to reek of curry for a week!! Trust me, this one is strong. The interiors are so so, and dont be surprised if you see a fly or two. The floors and tables were pretty sticky both times Ive been here. The servers arent very friendly, but thats just the demeanor. Indian people smile on the inside but frown on the outside. Its the balance of chakras. My three stars are for the lack of cleanliness and flies. Else this would get a 4.5 from me.
Authentic Tamil ambience. I ordered the onion chilli masala dosa and it was amazing. The chutney is a bit cold though, and more dilute than I would like. The bathroom was fairly clean. Service was prompt and courteous. I did not go for the buffet but focused on what I really wanted.
We met with friends at this restaurant for lunch. we heard about this restaurant from quite a few people. Well, we were not disappointed. The crew were very polite and we had an excellent feeling. The meal was great. We had a great time and we shall absolutely come back again. we highly recommend this place.
One of the best restaurant in Hicksville and long island .Best service , best food!Every single thing on the menu is authentic and made fresh!Price is very reasonable.Buffet is something really to try with variety of dishes North Indian and South Indian .Pineapple and mango Kesari is the best dessert!Home made kulfi(ice cream).Highly recommend for vegan dishes multiple options.
This place is pretty decent and the dosas they make are PROPER. Nice and big and perfect balance between crispy and chewy. Vegetarian joint. Beware though as the menu is very extensive and many items find their way into the microwave before being served to you. Stick with the dosas and you cant go wrong. The service is good as well.
This was my first visit . Restaurant was almost dead as only two customers inside dining area .very quiet ,very reasonable time for everything beside what I ordered was Chole Bhture not really I enjoyed as what North India Taste of Chole was not rather it taste kind of sweet Chole half boiled . By food sorry not really happy everything was excellent.
I absolutely love the buffet here. There are so many great options offered in addition to the dosas that can be ordered as part of the buffet. The staff is very accommodating with dietary restrictions. The buffet, however, gets really crowded during the weekends and the service can become a little iffy. Normally, though, this is one of my favorite restaurants for South Indian and Panjabi food.
Best Indian vegetarian lunch buffet around for a plethora of reasons! In the past, many Indian friends have recommended this place to me on more than one occasion, so I wasnt shocked to find out how great tasting & reasonable it is. Not only can you have unlimited access to the buffet, you get to order either a dosa or uthappam to compliment the lunch. Its not a huge buffet, but the choices are well-balanced. I have been several times and not much duplication of main dishes. The dessert never disappoints either and usually I am too full to eat much more. Added bonus: this restaurant is Kosher certified.
I come here very frequently. Whenever I miss South Indian food this is my go to place. Their dosas are very nice. I have never been let down. The food is cheap according to NY standards. I am not a big fan of their buffet. I prefer to order a single dish because their serving size is good. One should keep in mind that this place is known for food from the south of India so avoid ordering north Indian dishes.I recommend masala dosa, rawa masala dosa and you can choose the fillings you like. They offer(along with potatoes) mushrooms and cheese among other things.
My family and I has been coming to this restaurant for 5 years and have never been disappointed even once. Everyone is super nice and the food is amazing. Just recently we had an event and placed an order of multiple dishes for 40 people, and all of our family friends loved the food. I will continue to visit this restaurant and the food for my future events will be from Chennai Dosa.
These dosas are the stuff of dreams! The daily, ever-changing buffet is always drool-worthy and the staff are kind and generous. In all of my travels around America and Europe, Ive never found an Indian restaurant that even comes close to matching the delectable tastes and immense joy and satisfaction of dining at Chennai Dosas. I couldnt recommend this place highly enough.
I have been to this place a number of times & have always come out with GREAT SATISFACTION!!!The food is AWESOME!!! The owners & the staff are very nice & courteous to the customers & cater according to your need. I would highly recommend this place for anyone who love South Indian Vegetarian food.Keep It up Guys!
Great food however horrible service, dirty dishes, Waiter dropped straw as he handed it to me and just ignored me afterwards. Took a long time to place order but eager to take my dishes away. Asked for to go box it took three times back and forth to get it right. Probably will strictly order out. Avoid sit down!
Good authentic south Indian cuisine. I personally get the onion rava masala dosa which is probably the best one you can find in long island. The service is adequate in the fact that the food gets to you and you may have to keep track of your order because they forget sometimes. Overall good tasting south indian food for a decent price
Its a worst experience at this restaurant, No salt in dosa and chutney, all dhonsa taste same only different name,When we complain there is no salt in dhonsa , That guy at desk “Raj” started arguing ,So much unsophisticated way to handle customer never go to this place again , Sarvanabhavan is way better .
I ate here again over the weekend, and as always, the food is amazing. There was just 2 issues that happened this past weekend. 1. I had just started talking to the waiter about something and mid sentence the table behind me said excuse me and the waiter left us to attend to them and never came back. We had to ask the other waiter to help us out. It was kind of rude. 2. I had noticed that when we were about to pay the gentleman behind the counter added the tax in on the bill and i had noticed that it came it exactly 10%. The food tax in New York is not 10%. That was also something that turned me off. The food here is amazing and well worth it. But i was not pleased with the service and the fact that i was being charged a higher tax.
Previously left 5 stars and we were regular here until the recent experience when they tried to charge for our 2 year old who had not eaten anything (we were there for lunch buffet) and when confronted, the manager said it didn’t matter if the kid ate or not and just because she occupied a high chair on the table they would charge. Completely illogical but I didn’t argue further because it’s their place so their rules. In conclusion, this place is not kid friendly at all so we just won’t be coming here anymore.
I was a regular customer in Chennai Dosas for its excellent taste. But during the recent visit for the actual bill around $55 they have charged $9 extra and when inquired the said it is service tax (the regular tax was applied separately). After a debate they reduced it to $2 and still no idea what this service tax is about. The servers are not friendly.
* Worst Service* Complete disregard for customer service/satisfaction* We are still in the middle of our meal, they come and shove the check in our face, hinting get out - because I need to seat more people. even though half of the restaurant tables were not opened up.* I understand, that these guys used to co-own a restaurant on Lexington Ave, Manhattan - Guess what, I have been there and the attitude of the staff is the same.* The staff even took away the chair, when the person seated next to our table, got up to go get more food from the buffet. Why would anyone want to go to a place, who does not cater to their patrons properly.** Bottom Line -Dont waste your money on this place **
Food quality has dropped drastically just like house of dosas. The uttapam is so hard instead of being light and fluffy. I used to visit this place a lot but will not anymore. Sravana is far better in the south indian food. They may be little costly but if you come once a week, it does not matter much. Such a disappointment Chennai Dosas.
First of all I didnt realize this was a totally vegetarian restaurant, thats my fault. Went for the lunch buffet. mediocre food, not many choices. Our waiter could NOT speak 1 word of English. So I asked for nan bread he nodded yes but we never got it. He asked if we wanted Dosas, but he only said Dosas? We didnt know what they were so we said we would try one. He brought out 2 of these huge dosas. We ate one and asked if he could wrap the other to take home. He said no. We thought we were paying for it so why couldnt we take it home? Of course since he couldnt speak English, we had no idea what was going on. I can only assume Dosas are what they serve instead of bread and its included in the buffet, but then why ask if we wanted to order it? I was very confused due to the lack of communication and as I said food was mediocre, I wont be going back.
Very good south indian restaurant. Chennai Dosas has wide variety of dosas and all favorite south indian dishes. Pongal and Butter masala dosai are my favorites here. Lunch Buffet is awesome. After my good experience, I brought my office friends too here. They also loved it and became a fan of Chennai Dosas like me. Great hospitality... If you are south indian food lover, this is the right place.
Its nice place to have a Dosa and they have a good quality of dosas we all family loved it. Service can be a little slow and the ambience can be little I mean its so so Im being wise it is okay but yeah I feel like Indian food theyre not too many places so thats one taste good
Best South Indian buffet. All you can eat daily buffet including various dosas for $9.95 a head. 12-3pm. Kosher. 100% vegetarian, vegan. No egg, no meat. ghee roast masala dosa (soft) is heavenly. mango lassi is amazing also. food is consistently delicious any time, any day. great dessert selection on weekends and also during the holidays.
According to the review we went over there for dosas and all on 6 th feb 8: pm but it was poorly received by customer service. The food was good but the waiters who responded extremely mannerless and arrogant in nature expecting a good behavior &well mannered staff !!
Worst customer service ever absolutely terrible food takes so long to come the waiters are also soo slow and don’t know what they are doing they replaced chilies with green peppers. They also when they sit you at your table they forget to take your order you have a o tell them a few times before you we asked for 4 coffees we only got 1 after 25 minutes absolutely terrible service I would not recommend anyone going to eat here
Worst place ever!!!!4 of us was down with food poisoning & fever after having dinner from this place. We had to wait for tables for around 5- 10 minutes. They made us sit in another hall next to the main restaurant. It was not at all clean & chairs/tables were bad. There was no coordination among the staff. They didnt have any idea which table should be served with what dish.

2022-06-02Excellent South Indian food. Portions for the dosas are generous and I was unable to finish mine after a small appetizer.

2022-04-10This place is Amazing! If you go you definitely need to get the paneer tikka masala- it’s fantastic! It’s pictured on the left. On the right we got a pea/onion uttapam which was also great. Service is great, and everyone is very friendly 5/5.

2022-07-10I have to start off by saying the food itself was actually good but I thought the service could be better after what turned out to be a bad allergy experience. We ordered the samosas for appetizer. Halfway through eating, my 8 year old complained that she wasnt feeling well. I then realized it had cashews in it - my daughter has a nut allergy! Why didnt they indicate in the menu that it contained nuts?!?! Ive never eaten a samosa with nuts in it!! When I brought this up to the manager, he dismissed it, as if it were the norm for samosas to contain nuts! Im indian and have never seen it made with nuts. My daughter felt so sick that she couldnt her meal and subsequently threw up. The manager wasnt apologetic nor did he offer any discounts on our bill to make it right. I know it was a mistake on their part but at least they couldve apologized and assured us that they would make customers aware going forward that it has nuts. My daughter felt sick the rest of the day. Bad overall experience.

2022-02-13We had ordered dahi wada which was tasty and refreshing. We also had onion chilli dosa and Mysore masala dosa. Both varieties were delicious, adequate portion size but I would have preferred a little more portion of the coconut chutney. The sambar was tasty as well. The potato stuffing inside the dosa was a little bland but we added a little salt on top and it was okay. We ended with filter coffee which was strong and I really enjoyed it.Tempted to change my review after my recent visit. Was a disaster. Gobi Manchurian was extremely sweet. Pondicherry cheese masala Dosa was a joke. The potato had no salt and no taste to it. Couldnt eat more than a few bites.

2022-06-19This restaurant is amazing. Honestly the best Indian food I’ve ever eaten in my left. Definitely a must to go. Order either number 99 or the spicy red fried collie flower. Also Sunny, the waiter is the man and will take care of you well.

2021-07-14One of the smaller dosa places in the area. Authentic, freshly prepared, flavorful.Seating is a little tight - they are small to begin with, and seating further reduced post Covid. We tried the vada in rasam, cheese dosas for the kids, Chennai thali, Malgudi dosa, and gunpowder podi dosa. The vada and Malgudi were clear winners, though every dish was fresh and tasty.Staff seemed a little off - perhaps tired. Our server was not able to tell the difference between the 2 separate menu items called gunpowder dosa - he brushed it off saying it’s a repeated item on the menu by mistake. Another moved tables to the point of blocking of his own path, and struggled to squeeze himself through, when ample space was available elsewhere.World love to go again!

2022-04-03This excellent restaurant is both vegetarian and kosher. We eat here often, and although they specialize in dosas, we order other things from the menu, and have been uniformly happy with all of our choices. We especially like the baingan bartha, which we have eaten elsewhere, but is far better here. The restaurant isnt much to look at, but if you want great food at a reasonable price, this is certainly the restaurant to choose.

2022-07-02Worst dosa ever. No salt. No pepper. The water had more flavour than all the dosas combined. It felt like I was chewing through rubber sheets. I used to love tomato chutney now I absolutely despise it and can’t go anywhere near it. I would pay to not eat this. The coconut chutney was powder and felt like chalk. My mouth felt more dry than it already was after eating the dosa.
