Caveat emptor. We had a good experience with a previous group chess class organized by a friend at the JCC. We decided to try Chess at Three again by organizing and hosting a group chess class in our home for our 5 year old son and some of his friends/classmates.The tutor they sent was an “independent contractor” and she was not all that effective at keeping the kids interested. Our son started the class with an emerging interest in chess, but his experience with this tutor killed his desire to play the game. He also felt that she was “mean” to his friends and that the classes were not fun.Overall very disappointing experience. Would not recommend as there are much better chess tutoring options available.
I wish there was a no star option. In my opinion, this is an ethically challenged company. Good example of this is that at least three of the 5* reviews below were posted by the companys co-founders. Conflict of interest, anyone?Management does not seem to value or be focused on addressing the needs of the children they are supposed to serve. My child was enrolled in one of the Chess at Three groups, and did not enjoy or learn anything from the tutor they assigned. We stuck with it because our friends were enrolled in the same class. The curriculum is mediocre, and the promise unrealistic - very few kids in our group actually learned much about chess, even though they are much older than 3. After almost 6 months of lessons, my child learned almost nothing. The company seems to be all about making money, which is OK in business, but as a tutoring company you also need to deliver on the promise you make to your clients. For many classes, the tutor arrived late (up to 45 minutes late), and the tutor seemed to have no interest in actually teaching chess to my child. Our group decided to cut ties with Chess at Three, and agreed that none of us would ever recommend them to anyone. Poorly run operation. Dont even bother trying to reach out to management, as they really dont seem to care.I found their business practices to be deceptive in everything from their billing (e.g., charging my credit card for sessions that our child did not attend) to the quality of their tutors (e.g., the tutor for our group helped my child go from loving chess to dreading each weeks session). My prediction is that the company wont last, unless they address the serious issues with their operations and improve the quality of their tutors.
We are so happy to have Chess at Three in Park Slope! My 5 year old has been hooked since meeting the Chess team during their soft opening. We bought the set, have been exploring all of the stories and characters, and getting him accustomed to the pieces and game. Jen, the club manager, the tutors and all of the chess at three team have been incredibly welcoming, kind and patient with our budding chess player. Cant wait to keep up with the classes and see him develop his skills in the months to come. Couldnt recommend Chess at three more!

2021-12-07Our son Is 6 years old and just completed his first semester of chess at Chess at Three! He was a bit skeptical about playing chess and now looks forward to playing every week. Jen is an amazing teacher and handles the kids beautifully. Our son has truly enjoyed learning the game and we feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to send him to a very professional and creative company. Thanks to Chess at Three, we know this will be a game he will enjoy for many years to come!

2021-11-17Chess at Three is terrific! Were so happy we found this wonderful organization and local club. Jen is helpful and responsive in leading the club. Our son is quite reserved, and he took to his tutor from day 1. It made the leap from trying Chess at Three out during summer camp to signing up for a full term an easy decision. The Chess at Three method and tools are very engaging. Were so impressed with how well our son retains the lessons. The talented tutors make his learning so fun!

2021-11-04My son started at Chess at Three with Jen a couple of months ago and we absolutely love it. We invited a friend of his to join us and their friendship is really thriving because they’re learning something new together. Jen is so fun, energetic, and knowledgeable. She’s a fabulous and talented storyteller and she keeps the kids’ attention so well. It’s my son’s favorite class! Highly recommend signing up for a class!

2022-05-10This is a great way to introduce kids to chess. We started when the kids were 4 and they had so much fun learning about each of the pieces and how to play. The teachers are amazing - warm and engaging. My kid looks forward to playing chess

2021-11-29We signed up our little one to supplement her first schooling experience. Chess at 3 was recommended highly by another family, and we now happily do the same! The team have created a beautiful, warm, welcoming space that puts children at ease. They learn the basics of chess through imaginative story telling and rich engagement with the teachers. Highly recommended!

2022-07-01My children (7 & 5) have taken Chess at Threes online classes for 2 years and just love their teachers stories and cant wait for the next installments. They really enjoyed their Park Slope camp for the live chess and the other fun games, and their new Storytime Chess game. King Chomper and King Shaky are major fixtures in our house now!

2022-03-30I’ve been very impressed with Chess at 3. (Yes, it’s “at 3” but I think the program accommodates older (up to maybe 8yo) beginners as well.) The way they teach the rules allow varying levels of sophistication from complete metaphor to complete by-the-book.) At first, having lessons in the home was a plus because it allows a greater freedom in scheduling. Then, having lessons at home couldn’t happen due to Covid and Chess at 3 immediately pivoted to super easily-accessible online lessons. Then, when there was almost nothing for school aged children to do last summer, the UES Chess Club opened for lessons and tournaments! IRL— as if. So, basically, whichever method you want, they’re consistently there and they love the children. The space itself is as beautiful as pictured online.

2022-04-23Chess class is THE highlight of my 3.5 year old’s week. I’ll admit, I was skeptical on whether 3 year olds can learn chess, but now I’m a believer. Miss Haleigh is a *wonder*!! She got my daughter out of her shell and engrossed in chess within 10 minutes. This is very rare since my daughter is highly sensitive.Unlike other classes or activities for children this age, this is more than just glorified babysitting. My daughter is learning and developing her critical thinking skills lesson by lesson, week by week. I’m so proud of her.tl;dr Absolutely thrilled with Chess at 3, highly recommend!

2020-03-04Chess at Three is one of the most innovative approaches I’ve seen in education. From the first few moments my kids were hooked with a smart and entertaining form of storytelling that not only introduced my children to the rules of chess but also higher level strategy as they developed. I’ve met many of the personnel who are young, energetic and great with kids. I can’t recommend them highly enough!
