China New Star in other cities:
The food is classically delicious. Whether you grew up ordering chinese or walking to your local spot, the flavors of this food will definitely take you back to nostalgia lane! Friendly servers and reasonably priced, this is one of the best restaurants in Brooklyn! Mask friendly and completely clean and odor free! You ought to drop by!
I ordered food 5:30pm and was told an hour to an hour and a half. At 7:04pm I called to see if the food was coming. I was told 45 more minutes. At 8pm I called and they had the NERVE to tell me another hour!!!!Are you kidding me?? Three hours and a half hours for food? This was disgusting and unprofessional!!I canceled the order and they lost a nice delivery amount.I will not be ordering again. Disgraceful way of conducting business !!
It used to be really good but quality went down. The last two times I ordered General Tso’s Chicken—it was unacceptable. Overly breaded, dry, odd smell and texture, and there was an egg shell inside the skin!!! Not sure if it’s a new cook, new recipe or mystery meat, but it wasn’t good. They are also so much more expensive than other local spots and it’s just not worth it anymore if the food is no longer that good. The only thing I can eat that’s edible there now, is the eggplant and low mein. I miss the former owners.
The food is really good. The only problem i have is the prices.they are expensive..your on flatbush ave..not park ave in Manhattan. Over 26.00 for an order of spareribs with tax.is crazy to me.lower the damm prices. the ribs were like 4 inches long.2 equal one ..but they are very good.lol..they have the fastest delivery service you will ever get.there very nice people... Just the prices are high..
This place was one of the better restaurants to go to when the previous ownership ran the place. Over the past 2 years it has become a disappointment since the New OwnerShip took over. The quality of the food weather it in house dining or take out has become terrible. Last night I decided to give China New Star another chance after 2 years so I ordered Beef Chow Fung, Pork Fried Rice and 3 Egg Rolls. Well for those of you who are reading this the food was not terrible, it was disgusting. In addition the pricing is too expensive for the disgusting. Do yourself a favor go some place elsewhere.
Theres only one dish I order every single time I visit this restaurant - Walnut Shrimp! Ive been ordering that dish for the past FIFTEEN YEARS. I think its time I tried something different. Thinking about General Tso Shrimp. 😋The wait staff is very courteous and accommodating. If you need to tweak a dish they will do it for you.Highly recommend!
I took my 4 grandchildren to dinner tonight. Apparently they gave us the lunch menu to choice from!! I did not realize until the bill came when I questioned the prices they showed me the dinner menu, not the menu they gave us to choice from. We would have ordered a whole different way. The options of family style were not presented to me. They were down right rude about it! Terrible experience with the new owners will NOT be going back. Have been a faithful customer for many many yrs. Could have taken 10% off. or something!! Shame on them!
Normally I have absolutely nothing negative to say about this place, but the chicken yat gow mein soup had me so disappointed no vegetables at all the noodles thin and hard unlike every other place Ive had this soup and just a few pieces of chicken so disappointed I look forward to enjoying this soup and Normally order it from a couple of places in Bensonhurst or Gravesend. Looks like I will have to take a drive if I want it. Other than that the food is generally excellent here.
The restaurants interior decor is really nice but my experience was not! On July 17th my cousin invited me out to get something to eat and our first encounter with our server already started off wrong. Our server was a tall bald guy; he seemed very annoyed by our questions and he rushed us the whole time we were ordering. After ordering we didn’t see him again until 20 minutes later when we waved him down for a water refill. A couple minutes later a Caucasian couple come in, order, and some how their meal arrives before ours. We wait patiently for our food which comes out 10 minutes later. Finally we finish eating and our server doesn’t even attempt to check on us. Another Caucasian couple comes in, and he immediately runs to cater to them, then ignores us to go to another table behind us. Another 10 minutes goes by and he finally comes to our table. By then I was extremely frustrated and expressed my concerns, that man argued with me the whole time. It wasn’t until I said “I am a customer at this establishment and I am expressing my concerns your first response should be I’m sorry you feel that way what can I do to make it better” that he finally gave us an emotionless apology. He then disappears again and never comes back to get the check. At this point we decide to just pay at the bar. My cousin decides to express how she also felt to the cashier and that was a waste because she brushed us off as soon as she got our money. Now what does that tell you? After this terrible experience I will NEVER eat at this restaurant again! It seems as though if you’re Caucasian you’ll be treated like kings and queens but the same can not be said for people of color how sad!
I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant because of the food. Specifically everything you can order you can get half the price at a regular Chinese takeout. Plus their food is super bland and really stingy with tipping. The seating is very nice, too bright though but again the food.
An oldie but a goodie. No sit in but you can still order and pick up or place for delivery depending on your location. I live 20 mins away and I drive to pick it up. It is worth it. You wont be disappointed. The food is flavorful, not salty, quick service and they can change any item to your liking. It definitely fills you up without guilt.
Old school joint that changed hands before Covid and survived the long event. They did it smart and took advantage of the lull with no dine in eating and renovated. Expanded the kitchen and brightened up the joint. Lots of new faces among the staff but the food is still on point. Street parking is available but watch the parking meters. Clean bathrooms.
HOME MADE FRESH ALL THE TIME & DELICIOUS SINCE 1978 BLESS YOUR DAD WHO STARTED THE CHINA NEW STAR AS A TAKEOUT ONLY IN 1978 MY CONDOLENCES FOR THE FAMILY🙏 DAD WAS SO NICE . WE ARE GREATFULFOR TAKING CARE OF US ON FLATBUSH AVE FOR SO LONG ! ALL THE BEST FOR THE NEW OWNERS & LUCKILY HAV KEPT THE CHEF & GOT ALL ORIGINAL RECIPES REGARDS TO ALL
This place has went downhill fast! Just visited last summer and everything was great. Went yesterday for a friends birthday and was so disappointed. Hot tea was barely luke warm, only one napkin on the table for a party of 3, chicken wings that tasted like they went DIRECTLY from raw in the pack to the frying pan (void of all seasonings), oily egg rolls. Just awful. The pork fried rice remains tasty however.
Based on the ratings and the distance from my hotel I took a chance on it. Its not California Chinese meaning that the vegetables are not as prevalent. The hot and sour soup was good. The ribs are st Louis ribs not baby backs. A little greasy and could have used a bit more bbq sauce.Had the shrimp in lobster sauce based on a review here. The shrimp were jumbos and plentiful. The only things of color were cut up scallion tops and some egg. Still dont know what the brown things were that looked like ground beef crumbles.Excellent service very clean, open and warm feeling.
The customer service was horrendous. I walked in with a friend and wasnt even greeted properly. There was just intense staring before WE requested a table for two. The waiter was very rude as if he didnt want to serve us. The waiter also forgot certain parts of our meal, when we told him about it he was very standoffish. My friend who is a vegetarian was inquiring about alternatives to the chicken soup that was a part of our meal, the waiter continued to be aloof. The food was mediocre. I could have had better food at the Chinese take out up the block. I was just extremely shocked at the customer service quality and that alone would make me give them a zero rating if I could. Never going back there again. -_-
Sad turn for this former neighborhood icon. I can honestly say Ive never had a bad meal in all my years patronizing China New Star until now. Bad in so many ways. First, we noticed the new prices. $17 for combination platters seemed a bit high to us, but what the heck, they always feed us well here, eh? Before our entrees, we ordered the spare ribs, as we always do. This time around they were dry and gritty, over cooked. For the first time ever, we had ribs left over! Then comes our dinner.. two combination platters, fit for a king. (Make that a very small king.) Each had a generous mound of fried rice next to a not so large mound of food. The egg foo young completely fell apart though the lo mein tasted good. We usually take leftovers home but not this time. The waiter asked if we wanted dessert and we both ordered ice cream. He returned with a tiny plate with one scoop of ice cream. We told him there were two of us and he just laughed at us. (Strange, eh? perhaps a language barrier?) The front end lady came over to ask for identification as we paid with a credit card. That, too, was very strange for us. $65 on a chinese dinner for two that left both of us hungry is a travesty! The fact that the quality of food was less than acceptable is secondary. Shame on the new owners!
Very straightforward Chinese food restaurant. The service is usually good but the waiter we had was a bit nasty. One person in our party arrived a little late and we had not picked what we wanted so we requested a little more time. The waiter didnt seem annoyed until we were ordering and he said something to the effect of we took too long to order. I didnt think there was a time frame when ordering. The food is good and never disappoints
If you like the old fashion American style Chinese food than this is good place for those tastes. They also have takeout. I myself prefer the authentic Chinese food where most of the people in the restaurant are Chinese. This place is large and so it is good for groups. They have reasonably priced specials which include ice cream. I have gone with groups there and the service is excellent and they take separate checks. This place is accessible for wheelchairs and walkers.
Best spareribs in the neighborhood. Food is above average, but not great. Its better than most other Chinese restaurants in the area. I only order in from them now. The difference in prices for the same dishes for take-out/order-in vs eat there have become silly. They charge so much more to actually eat there, its almost as if they dont want you to stay. I still give it 4 stars for the delivery and take-out. But dont be a chump and pay the higher prices to sit there. The service certainly isnt worth it.
Some of the best Chinese food Ive ever had. Its gourmet, not the garbage stuff we get at fast-food styled Chinese restaurants. I have been coming here since I was a kid (over 20 years). They also specialize in hunan/szechuan authentic Chinese cuisine. I highly recommend them
Such a nice atmosphere they updated the restaurant the bathrooms are clean and beautiful They fry their own noodles that they give you on the table and they make the most delicious Mai Tais served in a cute Polynesian tiki cups the food although pricey is delicious and the portions are large and the servers are nice and attentive YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR !!!
We order from this place from time to time and the food was always good and delivery is quick. Saturday around 5pm we decided to go to the actual restaurant. It was very disappointing! The food was tasteless and they got one if the dishes wrong, they did replace it later. There werent many people when we came in, but by the time our food came we felt like were in a nursing home cafeteria at dinner time (I dont mean any disrespect to elderly people). We couldnt eat, just took the food home and left. This was the least enjoyable outing we ever had.
Went here for my nieces graduation lunch. Fairly priced. Dumplings were too doughy, quick service, place was pretty empty. One issue was the waiter, he was a bit close when it came to serving. Almost on top of us. When we mentioned it he got a bit of attitude. Dont know if well be going back
I grew up with this restaurant, delivery treat when my parents ordered, worked in the area and was our lunch spot, but it has always been consistent, good food great service and the waiters all know me. It has been my relaxing spot with lunch specials for years. Variety means I can try something different each time and it is a dying breed as you can not find any other old school sit down Chinese anymore that does not try to go over the top with Asian fusion and high prices. When I leave NY I will really miss the place!
Very disappointed with the food. Very stale and tasteless. Looks great inside but the food seemed rushed and the chicken wasnt cooked well. The waiters stand and stare at you while you eat while speaking in Chinese as if their talking about you. Kinda felt rushed and unwanted.
I dont know what everyone is talking about but this place is disgusting. They truly are rude trying to rush you out. If anyone gave this restaurant four to five stars they must have gotten fried chicken with fried rice and for the price that they charge you should go to a regular Chinese store down the road. I went there one day with my girlfriend she ordered the lobster Cantonese and I ordered the crispy duck. When the food came I literally got sick because after tasting it it turn my stomach the duck that I was long waiting had the most fat wasnt on the duck was not crispy and had the most bean sprouts Ive ever seen in a dish. It was so salty after a few bites we had to leave. Is there fried rice and soup was great but I can spend $2 for that anywhere else.
New owner and quality of the food has changed, ordinary. New name is Ruan New Star. No notice of change in owner, new staff, no sign change and trying to ride on reputation of former ownership. Look at your receipt, prices up and new additional charges. But food is bland, portions reduced and packaging changed. Special spark and care is gone. Shame.
Used to be good -- no more. So many things were less than good, I would not even consider ordering again. It was a delivery-type order. Orange beef was good sauce made with yesterdays stale meat. Dried out white rice. Dumplings had too much dough. Wontons were huge containing too much pasta and not enough meat. Fried rice was too starchy. Shrimp with garlic sauce was good seafood and veges in awful sour sauce. Lo mein was okay. Theres too much competition for me to give them another chance.
Good food, but I have a nagging suspicion that the staff may be held there against their will (or might be paying off a debt they acquired to smuggle them here). My personal opinion. Cops seem to be eating there for free. Perhaps that is one way to maintain the status quo. The food is sooooo good, but I feel guilty eating here. Well, I cant prove it, its not my job, so I guess Ill keep eating the food. I suggest you try the Peking Beef & the Jumbo Shrimp with white sauce (God knows whats in the white sauce) and roasted Walnuts. Wonton soup is good. Drinks are cheap and good.
Check your food before you take out I placed an order of lo main and pork fried rice when I got home I was really surprised that the bowl that was to be lo main had 1/2 rice in it as if they ran out of noodles they just added the rice on top of the noodles I seid wow my first order as a new customer I didn’t expect that didn’t go back or call them to complain it would be a waist of time there reply would just be sorry I don’t understand! Fried Rice didn’t have that golden color it was mixed in wth white rice the flavor was just way to strong will not order again had to give a 1 star to leave this review other wise they get a non stars
I walked in with my family a party of 11 and before we ever tasted the food the waiter Johnny was so rude and unprofessional the table all agreed to leave. He spoke broken english, did not try to accomodate or answer any questions and literally grabbed the menu out my cousins hand while he was still reading it. The food looks great but i will never know. A horrible and disrespectful experience.
Great big place and never a line. They need a little variety in the menu but will change around a dish for you.A tad more expensive than ChinaTown-but not many sit down restaurants anymore, not into the greasy buffets, come sit for a real meal.Soup & Ice ceam-nice and comes with the dinner.
We come back to Brooklyn as often as we can and we usually eat our way through the borough. Of course the pizza is great from places like L&B and the hot dogs at Nathans...But we are always trying to find the kind of Chinese food we grew up eating. After looking for The New China Inn on Flatbush Ave back in March...we stumbled on this place. All I can say is we ate there 3 times in 4 days. This is the real thing. Worth a trip from anywhere on earth. We could not believe our mouths. Go and do it now!
Bland tasteless food..If you are looking for a bad experience in Chinese restaurant sit down, then this is the place to go. The food has no taste, the wontons in the soup are not cooked (the dough is half raw) and the best that they can serve up is not on par with the greasiest of the garbage fast food Chinese takeouts that line Flatbush Avenue along its entire length. This restaurant is an utter disappointment in every respect. I just find it amazing that it is usually full and has been around for so long. The food at Peking at 1581 Flatbush beats this place by a mile and Peking is one of the slimiest places around. However they can cook one thousand times better than China New Star. It is my fault that I keep on trying to give China New Star another chance but after my god awful meal there tonight I will most certainly never step through their doors again. Worst Chinese food in Brooklyn.
What are you guys saying? I cant believe my eyes on some of these posts. Im very sorry that your experience was not as good as every time ive been there since i was about 10yrs old and im 38. But i think China New Star is one of the best, if not the best old style Chinese food places there are in brooklyn. Yes a lil expensive, ill agree. but well worth it. The quality of their chicken, pork and other meats are top notch. The portions are easily for 2, Even the house duck sauce is to die for and yes they sell it by the pint to scratch my itch. I just dont know what more someone could possibly want from a chines food restaurant... Its a must for people that havent experienced it.
My family and I went here after work one evening, the atmosphere is nice, and I appreciated the General Taos chicken using white meat and not some mystery meat like other cheap Chinese restaurants, but I could not get over the fact that everything tasted like it was burnt, it was like the chefs burnt something before and never cleaned up and just on cooking, the burnt taste was in the lo mein, and in the chicken and broccoli, my meal was fine, my wife and kids could not eat theirs

2022-04-15I am not from New York. It was a different way of ordering than we do in California... but food was good. Walnut shrimp was jumbo shrimp yumminess with broccoli crowns all around the serving plate. I got combination plate of chicken broccoli, pork fried rice, egg drop soup and a not so appetizing big egg roll. Another combination plate came with rice, wonton soup, an egg roll and entree of shrimp chicken and veggies. The crispy fried wrapper skins were an added bonus that came complimentary to our table. So good.Slightly more expensive than I anticipated but service was good.

2022-06-14What a waste of money. It was the worst Chinese food that I’ve every had. I don’t know if that restaurant is under new management from years ago, but they need to shut their door right away. We spent 150. 00 dollars for a bunch of lousy food. Whomever prepared our meal need to go back to culinary school. It was terrible. We ordered Young Chow fried rice, barbecue rip tips and Shrimp and broccoli. First, the shrimp were old, secondly, the rice look like a chocolate gummy mess and last, the ribs were cooked in vinegar.Oh my God you were warned. Stay away take this from me. You won’t be sorry! All of you who are giving China New Star a rating of a five or four have never had decent Chinese food before. If I could give it a zero I would! If you don’t believe me go on see for yourself. Part of this order was my sisters and she threw her food in the garage after she tasted it. Her food total was 69.00 and mine was 80.00 you do the math. It all adds up to disgusting!!!! Listen people any body giving a review after me are lying to the public . Please take my review Serious.

2018-11-08The food is consistent each time I visit this restaurant . The food is cooked fresh and my meal is always affordable and well worth the money. My personal favorite dishes at this restaurant are: The Pork Fried Rice, Wonton Soup and General Tsos Chicken. These dishes are always fresh , flavorful and well proportioned .As far as the service , I don’t have any complaints . After frequenting this restaurant for years I don’t have anything bad to say about this restaurant.
