LOVE THIS THEATRE! Ive seen 2 shows here, Fun Home & Once On This Island. Both were great shows. I love how roomy the seats were and that there isnt a bad view in the house. Any seat has a great view of the stage, and you can hear clearly from everywhere. Also love how big the lobby is. It really makes a difference when its cold outside to wait at the stage door inside. It gets full fast, but the staff handles it well. Also like how there is usually a step & repeat background with the show logo for anyone to take a picture in front of. This theater provides a truly immersive experience.
Went to experience the show Once On This Island for the second time... And again, it was Amazing!!!Once again the play/musical talks about the story of Timune, an island girl who falls in love with a young rich aristocrat, but could not be together due to their Status (He was mulatto and rich, she was poor and dark)The musical/play appears similar to the story of the Little Mermaid but with a Carribean twist. The telling of a story about a island, the folks who adhere to the Gods who directed their lives, their loves, as well as their destination.Once On This Island was lively, the colors of the sceneries, the not to mention the sand, that represented the Earth of ASAKA The water, that was Agwes DomainAnd in the play were choices to me made between Love (Ezulie) and Death (Papa Gee) and which Timune was part of that pawn caught up in the choosing of saving the young mans life, of whom she loves, or letting him die so that Papa Gee would have/take their soul ..I enjoyed the music, the dancing, especially being blown away by Alex Newells rendition of Mama will Provide as well as the traditional African dancing that stirred both body and Spirit... Too Amazing!Although the ending brought a little tear, it was also met with renewal as well as joy (The Death of Timune/Transitioning into a Tree) and at the end, repemption was made, and the story was continued by a young child who remembered the story, and will continue to Tell The Story to others. The play/musical ends, and folks go outside and wait for autographs and pictures. I was happy to see the show not once, but twice... ingrained in my mind and in my heart always#WeTellTheStory! #MamaWillProvide! #PartOfTheHumanHeart!
A wonderful theater tucked underground next to the Gerswin Theater which is playing Wicked. Came to see Sam Rockwell play Teach in David Mamets American Buffalo, a role made famous by Pacino. Walked out thinking Laurence Fishburne was a master craftsman. Darren Criss was also convincing as Bobby. Sam was a little off in the first act but by the second act, he had stolen the show. Ill never forget it. Thank you Circle in the Square for an amazing set and Neil Pepe for a well directed performance.
I saw Fun Home, In Transit, and now Oklahoma in the theater. The scenic deisgners are always on point transforming the space to their needs. It truly.is a unique experience seeing a Broadway show in the round, it adds a level of participation you dont get elsewhere. Ill always keep my eye out for shows playing here, definitely worth it.
On the smaller end of a Broadway house but provides an intimate staging that really has you close to the action. In this instance I saw Oklahoma! (2019) but have also seen Once on this Island (2018), both great productions for the venue and theres easy access to the bathrooms and good stagedooring opportunities if you want to do so.
We had a great time here watching Oklahoma. The staff was pleasant and helpful, the acoustics at the theater were good, and the amenities were satisfactory. Its nice for once to see a theater with escalators, unlike others where you have to tackle some really mean and narrow stairs. Oh and the chili and cornbread that they served during intermission was a nice treat, another thing you wont see offered at other theaters.
We loved watching Once on this Island here. The theater is intimate, and every seat is a good one. The sound, lighting, and environment feels very immediate. It was a privilege to watch this musical and see how the space played a role. I would definitely watch any musical or play here. The check-in process was easy. Seats were easy to find and ushers were polite and informative. The bathrooms are clean and well - kept.
It was a delightful experience. The seating was such as though that no matter where you were seated, you had a clear view of the show. It gave that feel that you were right there amongst the actors and actresses. I liked the idea of the sand and water in the center of the platform/stage. It was just like you were there on the island itself. The actor/actresses were phenomenal and I really enjoyed the concept of the story behind the show. The theater has ample space for legs, etc. and the acoustics/sound effects meshed nicely together.
Went to see Oklahoma with my wife. Seats were good because they were in a horseshoe. People had seats right on the stage with the actors. They provided chili and cornbread to the audience at intermission. The dancer performance after intermission was very creative. Enjoyed the play much better than expected.
I saw Once on This Island here--the show was fantastic. This was a charming theater! We were in the 3rd row, but it seemed like there were no bad seats--this theater is not very big, so dont feel like you need to some to be up front! There was a bar with great drinks and a decent number of bathrooms downstairs.
I visited the theater to see Once on This Island. It was a great show! Very lively. Great costumes. Very interesting the entire time. Loved it. The theater itself was clean. People were there to direct you to bathrooms and other places if you were lost. Overall good service.
Saw three Broadway show Oklahoma. It was terrific. They even gave us chili at intermission. Every seat is great as it is in the round. You feel a part of the show. The music is terrific. One of the leads is in a wheelchair. She is the first if not only Broadway star in a wheelchair and she is wonderful.
A very unique theater definitely. I saw Once on this Island and it gave a different audience perspective than a regular theater setting would. The audience surrounds the stage and is really quite intimate. One is made to feel that you are part of whats on stage. There is no bad seat in the whole of the theater. Would love to see another event there.
Im glad I saw this musical. Ali stole the show. The voices in this musical were perfection. As far as the story, it wasnt my favorite musical on Broadway. If you appreciate live theater, you should go see this. If you are just wanting lots of singing, dancing, effects, set changes, etc, you should probably pass on this one. Also, there are only 8 stalls in the bathroom so try to use the restroom prior to going. BONUS: they feed everyone chili and cornbread at intermission.
We saw Once on this Island and I would love to return again! The space was clean and the staff were helpful (shout out to the woman manning the photo wall for being fun and personable!)The show was easily one of the top three shows Ive seen on Broadway from Design to performance!Bonus: The basement (where the bathrooms are) had lockers for rent (50 cents) so we didnt have to worry about coats or travel bags while we enjoyed such a stellar show. Thanks for an unforgettable night!
Wow! What a place to see a show---literally no bad seat in the house. We saw this contemporary version of Oklahoma! and we felt like we were truly *in it* (helps that they served the audience cornbread and chili at the intermission)! Regardless, this is a brilliant staging, and I look forward to other performance in our future!
I came here to see Once on this Island the Broadway musical. This theater is very intimate and makes you feel as if youre in the show as well. I dont think theres any bad seating since its in the round. I was able to see everything that was going on. The seats are a little uncomfortable if youre a tall person. My brother is over 60 tall & his legs were in his lap. It was an amazing show so we didnt mind being uncomfy for a few.
A great little theater. Im sure its been said of this place before, this place is very intimate. If you want a theatre where there is no bad seat, this is it. Just saw Oklahoma! and the only regret was lack of set. After thinking it over, it was not an issue. It reduced distractions and let the cast stand out.
If you have not taken the opportunity to catch a show here, youre missing out on a terrific experience. No matter wheres you sit your part of the action. How they handled the production of Oklahoma, staying true to the essential story, using the music and score to engage the audience, and then the unique casting to finish off a fabulous experience. Dont be late to the second act. You have something completely unexpected to enjoy
Every seat has a perfect view of whatever performance youre watching. Theater often presents memorable shows that draws native NYC theatre goers who are in the know. Ive enjoyed every show Ive been lucky enough to see there. Staff was courteous & fun to interact with.
Review of Oklahoma: Just saw the revised version of, Oklahoma! and it was a big disappointment. There is so little staging that it feels like a high-school theater production --- almost none at all. While there are some good moments due to the talent of the actors, it was just a weird show and is not advised at all for kids. It seemed like 1/10 left during intermission and I had thought to do so as well. But having chosen to stay, talent aside, the production is not worth seeing when there are other and better for the same or similar cost. If they offered a money-back guarantee, I would accept. Its also in a basement theater and the place has zero character. For those who do chose to attend dispite these concerns, any seat is about the same view given that its shaped in a U, meaning that you will face other audience members. As others have noted, the seats are not the best and do get uncomfortable. Definitely not a true, Broadway experience imho.
This is a refreshing way to see a show. Its Broadway but a super reasonably sized audience so there arent really any bad or truly far away seats in the house. The only down side is if youre a seat to one extreme or the other of the stage - you have to turn your neck for a majority of the time while watching the show...but ultimately its nice to not be in the nosebleed section for a decent price! :)
I have been here to see two Productions, Once on This Island, and fun home. The venue is great anything that is here is always good there is not a bad seat in the house. Oh I am sorry I have seen three things I also saw in transit here. The only thing that I could possibly say that is not overly positive is the fact that the bathrooms are two floors down, but you are provided with an escalator so its not like it really a disadvantage.
The actors did a fine job but if you want an actual broadway caliber show, this is not for you. We left at intermission, which we didn’t know when it would be because there are no scenes since the performers just sit on chairs on the side of the stage when they are not in the scene. No lighting (the show was done with lights on) no orchestra, extremely minimum set design and props, very small company. We were very disappointed with this experience and wished we hadn’t wasted a night seeing this show when we could have seen an actual broadway show.
The show we saw was absolutely spectacular and worth the time and money however the staff has way to many rules.1. Cant sit on the floor in the lobby2. Cant use cell phones in the theater prior to the show, no photos either3. Cant go behind the red line in the lobby4. Staff just didnt seem like they like their job
We saw Once Upon An Island - This is a great new show. Awesome setting as you are sitting in a round auditorium, the audience totally surrounds the stage. They evening had people standing at the railings in the back.Amazed that this experience was over in 90 minutes, no intermission and it was full of energy. You are really up close for this performance. Hope to see more
Circle in the Square Theatre is a rather small Broadway theater but with pretty big importance. Its seating capacity of 840 still classifies it as a Broadway theater and gives the venue a rather boutique feeling. It is located in the Paramount Plaza building.Circle in the Square was opened in 1972. A weird story is that the original Circle in the Square was a theater in Greenwich Village, but had only a cabaret license, so the staff was used to serve the quests drinks. It was founded by Theodore Mann, José Quintero, Jason Wingreen, Aileen Cramer and Emily Stevens in 1951. They moved to the newly – constructed Paramount Plaza, next to the huge Gershwin theater. The stage of the Circle in the Square has seen some iconic shows through the ages. The likes of Coastal Disturbances; Oil City Symphony, Oklahoma!, Once on This Island, and Anna Karenina have all graced its stage. The latest show pre – pandemic was American Buffalo. The whole plot revolves around a Buffalo nickel, and the plans of Don, Bobby, Teach and Fletcher’s plans to steal it back. An iconic shows with several stints on Broadway, the story of their failed attempt to still the nickel back would certainly draw attention every night on Broadway!
Saw Once in this Island. Really entertaining show, intimate theatre, not a bad seat in the house. Was a little concerned when we walked into a ring of seats around a sand covered stage and a goat jumping onto crates. But the story they were able to tell with the limited space was amazing, definitely recommend if youre in town.
The venue offers a positive experience overall. Personnel are knowledgeable and friendly. Sightlines are not a problem. Occasionally, echoing occurs which could be addressed better by sound tech. Easy access via the E or 1 train. Escalator service was working which is helpful to all, specifically those physically challenged. Unfortunately, stairs are the only available choice to use for the restrooms. I noticed exceptionally long lines for women.WK
Not so like the design of the theater. It is a new one. I think it supposed to design letting audience all have a front view. But the fact is I am feeling my seat is set as back of the performance. Because the actors were so often standing with their back facing me. The show I saw was once on this island.
Worst excuse for a theatre I’ve ever seen. It looks like junior high school project that went bad. The steps made of plywood are treacherous. Steep and 15” high. They very hard to negotiate. We attended Oklahoma there this past Tuesday. It is a travesty. We left at intermission. I couldn’t have imagined in a nightmare such a bad product of Oklahoma Allen Parsons
Wonderful!! Went here for once upon this island (which was amazing!).Every seat in the theater will have a fantastic view because of the stage setup. Its in the center and seats circle around the perimeter. A different theater experience. Also, try to visit Theatre Circle right next to it for some unique theater merchandise.
Bought tickets to see one Broadway show whilst I was in New York... I bought Oklahoma ticket here expecting to see a big old traditional performance of this wonderful piece... Oh dear bad idea.... Had to leave after the first 45mins as was not impressed at all. Dont make the same mistake as me.
The theater puts on spellbinding performances and is a more intimate setting than most on Broadway. Seats are placed around the stage (its theater in the round) and there is often action that takes place around the audience. The stage is close no matter where you sit, immersing you in the world of the musicals that are presented.
Once again we went in with unreasonably high expectations for a production at Circle in the Square and the expectations were more than fulfilled. Once on This Island combined clever stagecraft with brilliant performances in a theatre in the round where every seat is great. Dont miss whatever is here.
For NYC an intimate broadway theater almost in the round. No bad seats. Lockers are limited if you want store your coats etc. Bathrooms are adequate but there are lines. One bar area with market priced beverages. Ambiance is non-existent. We enjoyed once on this island.
A family tradition continues: Here with my oldest daughter to catch an extraordinary production of Oklahoma before it closes, I was swept away by a flood of theater memories at Circle-in-the-Square dating back to the early 70s, including being drenched by James Earl Jones as he delivered a lonnnnngass monologue at the end of The Iceman Cometh. Too many wonderful evenings to recount here, but none better than George C Scott, Nicole Williamson, Julie Christie in a remarkable Uncle Vanya the likes of which has not been replicated in 46 years. And if you can catch Oklahoma before it closes in a few days, years from now you will be able to say you were there. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Cute cuz layout was different. Made for a cozy & intimate theatre/show since you are close to the stage & actors (our seats were 2nd row fr stage. However, when buying seats, forget what you know of classic theatre layout/seating. TIP: The reverse is true vs traditional theatre seating, ie. Get seats higher up as you get a better birds eye view of the whole stage & the action.

2022-04-09Truly not one bad seat! Intimate setting - in the round / thrust. Building has charm - 70s? Just a guess…. The maze of stairs below street level is half the fun.

2022-03-30First time in this theater but I’m loving it. The stadium layout is perfect to have stage set up in the center, so actors can act freely in the middle instead of having to face a certain way to the front, best for play, not sure how it works with musical tho.Came to see American Buffalo features the three powerful actors, they built a whole pawn shop in the stage center: the props are so details your eyes just can’t help to check out everything. There’s no bad seats in the theater as it doesn’t have that many rows, so everyone is very close to the stage. I would say on the side 2-3rows are the best. So you are close to the stage center but not too close.

2022-04-09This place is my favorite among all theatres in the city. I think there is no bad seat or no seat with partial view. But donot expect any fancy loudy broadway show in here, this theatre is just for off-broadways.

2022-05-29Not handicap friendly. You have to go to the box office for someone to walk you to the main building to ride the elevator to the theater. If you need medical devices such as walkers or crutches you will need assistance walking down the stairs to the seating. If you are in a wheelchair you will not be able to have front row seating. If you have trouble walking up in down steps this there there will be difficult unless you have assistance with you. The bathrooms are not on the same floor you will have to take the elevator with an assistant to walk you down a long hallway to a restroom. So if you cannot walk long distances you may want to think about going to another theater. Also you may want to ask for a booster seat just in case you get stuck behind someone who decides to wear their hair in a messy bun

2022-06-13Have watched couple Broadway shows here latest one being Once on this Island and Oklahoma. We got lottery tickets and the seats were amazing in Orchestra. Since this is a small theater there is no bad seat at all. Centrally located in Midtown. Came back to see American Buffalo and loved it too. Orchestra 3rd row B lottery tickets.

2022-05-21Really cool theater. We sat at one of the top points on the “U” on the front row and it was incredible to be that close to the stage. From that seat, we were occasionally unable to see the performers faces but we would definitely sit there again. American Buffalo was amazing!

2022-04-09Visited circle in the square to see the new production of American Buffalo. The show was fantastic, and the theater is a treat—it’s like a boxing ring, you’re right in the action regardless of where you’re seated. My only complaint is that theater staff let a group of guests in after the show had started, and the staff in question spent 5-10 minutes whispering among themselves and with these guests, right behind me, regarding how they would deal with the situation. Ultimately they sat them in the back, and while I’m glad they got to sit, I essentially missed the beginning off the show, which was pretty disappointing.

2022-05-27Came here before to see Chicken and Biscuits . Now here for American Buffalo . With its circular design it makes for a immersive theater experience . You feel like you are in the living room of the set . I’ve been to a ton of plays and this is the first time I noticed an assistive listening device table for those that are hard of hearing or blind . Headsets are available to describe the action and narrate the scenes . You can get a closed captioning device and even get a connection right into your hearing aide , I was told all of this by the nice gentleman in charge of the devices . Very helpful . Also another staff member let me know that there were designated wheelchair seats -to get to those you need to arrive a minimum of 30 minutes before a show . You go in through the lobby and take an elevator down in a different entrance . To use the accessible bathroom you also go through a different entrance . If it were me I’d call the theater before and let them know you are coming and find out more details of all the ins and outs . One other thing of note Is that this theater is off Times Square but a much quieter street which is really pleasant . It’s only one level of seats so not very big which I also love .

2021-11-07We got a chance to see Chicken And Biscuits, and it was a wonderful experience! Our first play since the pandemic started, and we couldn’t be more grateful. The staff were diligent about maintaining safety protocols, and theater space was absolutely beautiful.
