Whats a UWS guy to do? With Fairway, Trader Joes, Citarella and Zarbars in walking distance, its tough where to go; However,, for meat and seafood, I prefer Citeralla for quality and selection. On the other hand, for regular, sorry Citarella, but Zabar is numero uno...
Poultry, fish, organic, and gourmet items. As far as prepared foods, they dont have hot prepared foods but otherwise a good selection. Pricier and not as much of a selection of groceries than other nearby markets but still a good market. One line at checkout and every register is open so line moves quickly, but not a lot of space to walk through and exit.
Citarella is the best place to shop for everything. I have been shopping at this place for over a decade. Everyone are helpful and nice in every area, my favorite people mostly are the meat section, people upstairs and the fish place. I became friends with few of them and I always recommended this place to every one. But sad to say, this fast few months I notice at the fish department. There was this guy whos been always mean and its very upsetting the way he treated specially today, I saw his name on his uniform and it says STEVE! I felt so bad because the Steve I used to know at that place was a very pleasant and friendly person. But this new STEVE is nasty and unpleasant to costumers. Please do something. this person seems like his not happy to be at his job. His mean and no patient to us! Today is the 15th of November and he works in the morning shift.
Citarella is a great, reliable place to get a prepared dinner. One of their best items is the rotisserie chicken, which you can request to be cut into quarters. The store has a reputation for being pricey but most items are actually average price, very close to Fairway or Whole Foods. My whole chicken was less than ten dollars, and much better than either than those of the two other stores.
Fantastic quality grocery store. It is on the pricier side. We buy all our fish here. The fish selection is fantastic and delicious. The challah is the best in the city, and they have great prepared foods. We love the gnocchi bolognese, the lemon chicken, meatballs, mashed sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, matzoh ball soup and chicken soup.
Issue with masks at Citarella UWS.Unfortunately, on 02/07/21 a customer who was not wearing a mask was allowed to enter and shop in the store. To make matters worse, the customer interacted with several employees, none of whom requested that he wear a mask. I reported the matter to one of the employees who looked at me blankly and walked away without any comment. I then spoke with the manager who apologized for the doorman failing to implement the store mask policy. (When I got in, nobody was monitoring the door like at neighboring Fairway.) The manager did not seem to be concerned that none of his employees bothered to request that the customer wear a mask.I love Citarella. It offers one of the truly great NYC food shopping experience with what I consider to be the best seafood department in the city, plus friendly and personable service. I will continue shopping there. I just hope that in the future, management will be more serious about enforcing its mask policy.
High-end (pricey) gourmet grocery store with delicious prepared foods and desserts.Unfortunately, no one upstairs knew anything about their coffee selection or could answer basic questions about it. I appreciated their friendliness and honesty - it’s just a result of poor management. The people behind the counter who pack coffee should be trained to know something about the coffee. I went to Fairway.
This place gets to be a mad house at peak hours so if you want to love it as much as I do, try to go on weekdays or just before they close in the evening. I made a late run for steak and other goodies the other night and the usually over whelmed butchers were incredibly helpful and got me exactly what I needed. Their bulk foods are of excellent quality, the Marcona almonds in particular! This isnt necessarily a place to do all your grocery shopping but for any and all specialty item (and a staff that knows them inside and out), this is the place to go
The fish is always perfect, fresh, and delicious at Citarellas! The employees know the provenance of every piece of seafood in the store, and are helpful and friendly. Its an experience just going inside. You will pay top dollar for what you buy, but will be taking home the best top-quality seafood there is. You will never be disappointed with Citarellas!
I love love love Citarella. Its very authentic, there is a wide range of options. Its good for if you just want a couple snacks. I loved being able to just walk from the NYLO hotel and pick up whatever I had a craving for. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Citarella has the freshest food in NYC
The prepared foods look spectacular, particularly the rotisserie chiken and duck. But the standout feature is the fresh fish counter. More varieties than i can vount and helpful counter people to ask questions of and get suggestions from. The only real negative is the checkout line. Narrow and crowded and difficult to navigate once you have paid.
If you are an average cook, the easiest way to improve your cooking is to use the best ingredients. If you are cooking anything that involves fish or meat, citarella is the place to pick it up. Beautiful and fresh meats and seafood.Soups, bread and sauces are also very good for variety. Im not crazy about their prepared foods but others seem to like them. Not the cheapest place on the block but cant beat it for freshness.
Their meats/fish/produce have always been quite nice, so I decided to buy eggplant parm and a roasted corn salad, prepared food. Very disappointing. It was quite bland, and quite expensive, as the whole store is. Maybe others like these, but I thought they were terrible. I threw most of them away.
Citarella, as always, for the past ten years has been one of my gourmet faves, when I am in the mood for that foodie genre. You cannot go wrong with the myriad of delectable choices that they offer, you are sure to find something that will satisfy your craving desires that range from fresh produce, salads, prepared foods, artisanal pastries, fresh juices, soups, and more!
I would have given 5 stars if I wouldnt have gotten a bad raspberry lemon tarte for my husbands birthday. I always get this dessert for special occasions and this last time the yellow cream instead of being bright yellow and firm was brown and mushy. It also tasted bad, guests didnt like it (of course!). When I called Citarella and mentioned it, i was not even given an apology! Customer service definitely careless and bad.
Far from gourmet with many minority cashiers from Washington Heights & Inwood who carry miserable expressions and a lack of etiquette, making you regret your visit immediately. As a minority, it was quite unsettling and an embarrassment. Citarella has an onboarding of staff who clearly are unhappy. The misery is so loud that after 10 years of shopping here, we have gone elsewhere for groceries. Even the White customers look unhappy. No matter how you package things, Citarella has lost its elegance all around. At the end of the day it feels like a Key Food on a good block in disguise if you really pay attention to it all.
Very fresh food and the store was very clean. I was, however, disturbed by the three cashiers that were gossiping about another employee. Very distasteful. Customer service is hit it miss. I had great service in the bakery dept and the cashiers seemed to just want to push me through so they can continue gossiping. Wouldve had five stars without this experience.
Price of orange juice on display was $8.99.Got home and looked at receipt and they charged me $15.99. Really?Zabars charges $8.99.Is Citarella price gouging or did cashier overcharge? Going to grocery store is hard enough in this environment without having to price check every item.
Fancy Fish Store. There are several Citarella in NYC and now in the Hamptons. This one is the original. They carry a wide range of fancy fish. Sort on the expensive side but the quality is fabulous. They also sell beautiful cuts of meat. You might buy your a roast here for your next fancy dinner party. They stock game, just in case you were wondering... They expanded to the second floor years ago. Now they sell specialty groceries too.
Citarella started as a fishmonger and still excels in this area. However, you might find it most useful for its wide array of high quality prepared foods and fresh pastas. If youre a turkey giblet gravy fan, dont miss this during the holidays, along with excellent sausage stuffing. Many people also swear by the rotisserie chickens. For a small store, Citarella manages to stock quite an array of fine foods.
Love the food and the options here. Unfortunately today i left w a bad taste in my mouth- a manager today brought her own prejudice when she refused me the bathroom. All the staff on the floor indicated that a manager can allow me access to their restroom downstairs. She took one look at me and said NAH! I ended up buying the pot pies along other items at the store, i just needed to use the bathroom after drinking all that soda across the street at AMC. She was referred as “customer service” which she failed to provide.By the way, you can use the bathroom next door at Fairway. Their managers don’t discriminate
I used to get quite good prepared food here a couple years ago. No more. Recently everything Ive gotten is miserable.I got some beef flanken--tough, dry, I had to shred it and cook it in a stew for an hour. Duck used to be crisp and tender. Past 3 times, its either all fat or all dry and shriveled. Even the beets al forno is tasteless and pastey. The potato puree was mealy.I give up on this place.
My wife, a talented and skilled prepared- food shopper fills a fashionable shopping cart with the civilian analog of MRE(meals ready to eat) that Citerella does so expertly, And does it at least twice weekly. She emphatically ceased cooking in 1970 when our sons left to see the world and taste food prepared by strangers. A story that could easily stand alone. In our final chapter we are dining around Manhattan and utilizing Citerella for home plated dining. A local rag just posited that Fairway is about to buy the farm for real real and an unnamed gourmet food store is talking to the Bway landlord to turn over the keys. Since Fairway is open 24/7/365 the keys might not even exist. In any event, hopefully Citerella will soldier on.

2022-04-05I love Citarella - its products are GREAT. I even got my wedding cake there! (Devilish - yum!) But recently prices have skyrocketed compared to any nearby establishment. Im pretty sure that brownies and cookies went up 100% in the past year! They’re now $9.99 and $7.99 respectively. I know this because I used to think they were a reasonable quality and price, and because I noticed brownies were 6.99 two months ago and commented on it to my spouse. This is ridiculous. It’s far above even food inflation, and they’re clearly profiteering. I’m moving my high end good shopping to other spots. Fairway’s black and white cookies are perfectly fine as well. (They shrunk a bit in size recently… but not by half. )

2022-07-11I love this place they have the best oysters in NYC better than any restaurant of NYC ! High end restaurants might have the same oysters but won’t taste as fresh and as good as citarella and what would also make it better besides the great quality is that in citarella oysters are way cheaper than any fancy restaurant ! Everything in citarella is good especially the scotch smoke salmon i love it ! I recommend people coming amd givingit a try you won’t regret and and the prices are amazing

2022-07-17Disgraceful and challenging cashier Kasie insisted on mixing hot snd cold items on checkout. I told her they cant go into the same bag for a long period of time and she told me they were in the same basket. What did she was, a hot basket for the hot food and another basket for the cold items?;; And then she did a gross strewn. I told her that Im a customer and she doesnt have to like me but she owed me a polite transaction.

2022-01-14Our favorite supermarkets in the area. It has great variety of all sorts of gourmet items and it helps a lot that they have rare fish too. On the second floor, they have a lot of Prosciuttos and salamis that they will slice once you make the order. They have quite a few items of their original brand so if you’re looking for a gift for your friend, the gift baskets would definitely be a good choice. They have quite a few options too!

2022-02-15Good quality products in general. Unfortunately, the local (NYC) delivery service they use has been unreliable, with delays of 2 hours + so we do not use them when time is of the essence...

2022-03-14One of NYCs top 5 gourmet supermarkets, zero complaints from me. Upper West Side in the 70s @ Broadway is the gourmet supermarket super stretch of NY. Between Citarella, Zabars & to a slightly lesser degree Fairway & Trader Joes you eat like a King and sample products from all corners of the Earth.
