CIVILIAN Hotel in New York
Its a great hotel! The rooms are very elegant with excellent views of the city. Very clean and excellent customer service. Will be going back again for sure.Update: Stayed again for another night. Staff is super friendly and helpful. Hotel is beautiful and the style of the entire place is fun. Great place to stay for a Broadway show or a date night!!
I think Civilian has got a personality problem, is it a hotel, a bar, a restaurant....? I am all for developing a business but felt that the core expensive Hotel stay may get left behind. Cant fault the location, heading away from the Times sq chaos was much more preferable and some amazing bars and restaurants deep in Hells Kitchen.Room was OK, great large and comfortable bed. Lacked draws for a longer stay as we were doing. Bathroom, wet room had a serious issue with the water not draining away despite our best efforts, had to paddle to go to the toilet or basin. We did report it and ask for a room change but they never got back to us. That was disappointing considering the cost. Need to up their game to compete for sure.If we come back to NYC will be an apartment rental as works better for longer stays. Its a great little hotel, but can only give 3 stars.
I loved everything about our stay at Civilian Hotel. Its beautiful, the lobby, lounge and the rooms. We stayed in a spacious queen which was perfect for us, everything was thoughtfully designed to make the most of the space. The location is also perfect, we were within a 5 minute walk to every theater we visited and obviously there are restaurants everywhere. Youre also close to a few subway stations, we were able to get all over manhattan very easily. Youre in the middle of the action, but when you were in the hotel and your room, it didnt feel that way. The staff was kind, thoughtful, and extremely attentive. Its my new favorite hotel.
The location is primo, and the place is eclectic and fashionable inside. The staff is generally great, though Jesus in particular stands out. He helped us manifold times, and was warm. He made my wife and I feel right at home on our brief business trip. Darwin was wonderful too, but Jesus deserves a huge raise.FYI, the large King room has water from the shower that goes all the way to the toilet and sink. They give you a squeegee to clean up the mess (which means they know its foul, though Im sure some people like it) but I didnt want to be working during my already extremely busy time (plus I find the fact that the bath water doesnt stay in the shower, but instead goes EVERYWHERE in the bathroom is disgusting (to me! personally)). We downgraded to a Queen room for this very reason and simply lost the the money that was paid for the King. The manager gave us free breakfast though unfortunately the breakfast isnt truly a breakfast. Theres not even scrambled eggs nor bacon. Instead, theres muffins, orange juice, and some yogurt with coffee / tea. Its more like a continental breakfast that was a minor amount of torture to eat, so we ignored it the rest of the days. Other than that, the hotel is great.
Great location, if this is your first time in NYC, in hells kitchen. tiny (so are most of the rooms in new york) and clean rooms.the staff are great and very friendly and always happy to help. we really liked Jesus.the room service costs ($20) extra, but I think its okay, because the rooms are cheap and cleaning a room every day is really not necessary. you can get new towels for free, every time you ask.also the rooftop bar should open in one month. so this will be a great extra value. the breakfast seems like a waste, because you have so many great cafes all around you - its new york 😀
As frequent visitors to New York City, I would tell you that my husband and I have found a new hotel-home.Our stay at the Civilian was exemplary, from the brilliant accommodations to the unique and delightful decor. Along with the ideal location, the attribute that really made the stay for us was the staff. Each person working there with whom we came in contact possessed an energy and a positivism that brightened our mornings, evenings, and the entire stay.We would highly recommend staying at the Civilian!!!
My stay at the Civilian Hotel was beautiful. The hotel is ultra-chic, and the architecture and interior design are fantastic. The Broadway artifacts are exciting and add an exceptional quality to this hotel. The website states, Weve envisioned our hotel as an artful extension of the dynamic neighborhoods that surround us. In my opinion - they have certainly achieved that!It is so close to the theatres but yet set on a quaint street.I would highly recommend this hotel. The rooms are small but well furnished. (and really – all the space you actually need).I had one snafu (as can be expected when checking in on opening day). Still, David Lopez – the GM, was so gracious and welcoming he turned what could have been a very negative experience into a great positive one.I cant say enough wonderful things about this hotel. If you are going to book it – do so quickly. I feel this hotel is going to be one of the premier places to stay while in New York. The bar on the second floor (along with the patio attached) and the blue room – also with a terrace - are sure to become one of the citys must-have special event locations. All in all – this is a gorgeous hotel with great Broadway memorabilia for theatre enthusiasts. The staff is top-notch and welcoming. I will be staying again at The Civilian.
Perfect location for staying near Times Square/Theatres. Has a really classy, modern, boutique feel. Staff is great, very helpful. Only complaints is that, even though we paid for the cleaning service, our room wasnt cleaned during our 3 night stay and the sheets could be a little higher thread count to help match the luxurious feel of the hotel.Regardless, I would come back again and recommend this to anyone looking to stay close to the action. We were on the 11th floor and there was no issues with street noise at all. We were within 5 minutes walking from the theatres and lots of great bars/restaurants/convenience stores. You cant go wrong for the price, in my opinion.
Honestly, a really great hotel from check-in to check-out. Cozy room. Nice view. Service is immaculate. They go above & beyond to make sure your stay isn’t anything less than perfect. You even get text updates to let you know what’s going on throughout the hotel. I extended my stay for a day here w/o an issue. So I was there a total of 5 nights. Location is about a block away from Times Square. Very close to the Broadway theaters. You can walk everywhere. Such a cute find. Can’t wait until the restaurant & rooftop are finally open but even w/o those the bar on the 2nd floor is beautiful & intimate. Really happy w/ my stay. This is now my go to hotel for future stays in NY.
The staff was absolutely amazing and the hotel is newer so everything is well kept. We had a cozy queen and the room was quite small so be prepared for that. There is a surcharge to have the room serviced daily, but they will run you towels or throw your trash etc at your request for no fee. We didn’t stop by the bar or restaurant there, but I will definitely stay at The Civilian again should I go back to Manhattan. They are also located pretty centrally with multiple subway stops nearby and access to Citibikes close by as well. 6/5 stars!
Me and my coworkers stayed at the Civilian for five days last week for a business trip and it was amazing!! Very clean, beautiful hotel and amazing staff. Kassandra and Megan at the front desk were beyond helpful and very sweet! From helping us check in to holding our luggage for the day after we checked out, they made our stay 10x better! Thank you guys!! We will be back!
We went to the civilian the first week of December. There was excellent service and a delicious breakfast. The ambiance was very relaxing and esthetically pleasing. Plus amazing views of the city. I would recommend going there and I will definitely be coming back soon. Thank you to Franck Hermann for setting us up with the most elegant VIP treatment(Champaign, large room, a gift basket)!
As a travel advisor, I had the honor of staying here, and it was PERFECT. Well priced, the best location (in the heart of the theatre district, close to Times Square, and Central Park), and has the best atmosphere. Its trendy, has great theatre flare, and the rooftop bar (coming July 2022) is going to be incredible. Cant wait to come back, and send clients here! Service was great - they treated me like royalty.- Megan Vatnsdal, Onyx & Evergreen Travel
Great hotel! Friendly staff. Beautiful decor and style. The room was perfect with lots of modern features that you dont see in a lot of other places (in-room recycling, automatic curtains that black out city light, water bottle filling station by elevator). Overall wonderful experience!
So happy I picked this hotel! The view from my room was amazing and I loved that you could sit in the window and look out over the city. While the rooms are small, they are beautifully decorated and well designed. The location is ideal if you want to get around primarily on foot and the staff was super nice and thoughtful!
Highly suggest! Lovely, clean, chic, safe hotel with spectacular decor and beautiful little touches. The entire staff was wonderful- super friendly and helpful! I can’t recommend enough. I stayed there for a long weekend with my little boy and we both loved it. Excellent location, a true gem in the theater district.
Let me start off by saying I don’t write reviews but after my stay here, I had to. Book immediately! I stumbled upon this hotel when I needed a last minute hotel and this will now be my go to hotel in NY! The room is small but so well designed that I never felt cramped (it was just me and my one bag though). Such a great location and incredibly well designed! The owner’s attention to detail and passion for aesthetic is top notch. The staff was a delight and incredibly helpful.
Spent a nice long weekend at this lovely hotel with my girlfriend. The rooms are beautifully designed but very small. Some may find them a little too cozy but we didn’t come to NYC just to spend a lot of time in our room. We had a room on the 24th floor that had big windows and an amazing view of the city. The a-la-cart pricing model means that if you’re ok skipping some housekeeping services this can be an incredibly affordable hotel in a great location. Just be sure to understand how their pricing works so you’re not comparing apples to oranges when looking at other options.Wish the room had a minibar to store some drinks, but the staff was quick to send up an ice bucket whenever we needed to cool our beverages. We dropped by the elegant little bar on the second floor for a cocktail before heading out to dinner. Wish the rooftop lounge was open, can’t wait to come back and check it out.The staff were all super friendly, welcoming and helpful. We’ll definitely be back the next time we’re in NYC!
This review is regarding the above and beyond service I received from the front desk. Michael is the sweetest, most helpful hospitality employee I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. He was so incredibly kind and eager to help that he truly made my day. His attention to detail and commitment to service assisted me in pulling off something really special and for that I cannot thank him enough! This experience gives me faith that excelsior customer service is not dead. I’d give 10 stars if I could.
What makes The Civilian great isnt just that its incredibly clean, its not just the friendly staff, its not only the beautifully detailed decor; its all of these things and more. My wife and I loved everything about our stay here and are excitedly telling all our friends and family about it. New York City is brimming with incredible places and this hotel is one of them.
I enjoyed a lot staying in this hotel.Great location, great room, great location, great staff.I originally reserved a twin bed room (small but cosy) but because I arrived with two kids I asked for an upgrade to a two full size beds room. They helped me an even made a discount.I like very much the design of the hotel an the room. Good blackout shades and very good view two the east riverNever had a problemOne of the best locations. One block from Times Square, one block to the next Subway Station, three blocks to Rockefeller Center. Two convenience stores just at the corner and a gift shop. And at the next block a Walgreens operated drugstore
Brand new hotel with impeccable style. I generally dont like the Times Square area but this hotel feels like its in its own separate neighborhood away from all the hustle and bustle. Cassandra checked me in and she was an absolute gem. A true hospitality professional. If you frequent NYC hotels , you know the rooms tend to be on the smaller side. The great thing about the hotel is that the room design is mindfully done, truly brilliant. I opted for the cozy room to save money and didnt feel cramped at all. The way the room has been laid out allows for extreme comfort. It has a modern flair mixed with some classic notes. The staycation I needed. I will be back.
My husband and I stayed here during a long weekend in NYC. If youre going to see a broadway show, this is the place to stay! Youre a close walk to the Al Hirschfeld Theater among others and Time Square. It was clean and the rooms and hotel bar/lounge were well designed and clean. The rooms are a little small, but that is expected for NYC in my opinion. Definitely recommend and hope to come back soon!
My new go to in midtown. Convenient location, hip decor and easy self serve checkin/out. Staff friendly and helpful. No frills, you pay extra if you want your room cleaned during your visit, rooms are small and no fridge or coffee making in the room but clean and comfortable.
Started off with some creep hanging around the check in desk listening to everyone’s info and room numbers, drinking, and bothering the check in girl. They couldn’t be bothered to help me check in and said “use the kiosk” and went back to their phones. They do not clean the rooms and a basic room comes with literally nothing. The communal shampoo situation is disgusting. There is NO sound proofing and the doors slam shut all night. You can EASILY hear conversations through the wall. I asked them to bring me up my skip order and they refused until I asked for two towels and they threw about 15 small towels/face clothes on the floor infront of my door. There is no communication and the “breakfast” is a fruit cup and half a stale muffin, $20 for that. Really not impressed. At cheaper motels you at least get a tea or coffee in your room. They are also right near a fire department which has sirens going off all day and night. You have to pay to have anything, I was shocked I didn’t have an add on charge for hot water.
My girlfriend and me just checked out today and I wanted you to know that this place is nothing like the usual hotel you will find in NYC. Yeah, you might be waiting one or two minutes for the elevator but that will be all complaining about. Particularly, I want to highlight the staff and want to say thank you if you read this. You made us feel welcomed and you spread so much positive vibes every time we came in.Just thanks and we will come back.
Cant take that location for granted!I got to walk around Manhattan with my wife, get dinner and see the nightlife and then get a good nights sleep right there and got breakfast at milk n honey. The rooms were super comfortable which is important and the staff is so nice.
JUST HORRIBLE !Me and my girlfriend reserved 5 night in this hotel until we want to change our dates; after that you cannot change your dates apparently so they completely cancel your full reservation, very annoying when you go in NY for the first time in a couple of weeks. I never see that, I reserve 15 days at the start and change for 5 days only finally, but it’s not possible, WHY ? It doesn’t make sense.Don’t reserve this hotel if you would like to change your dates, they gonna cancel everything. Thanks Civilian for your bad decision, now we go in NY without any room where to sleep and if you want to reserve again you need to pay double price.DON’T RESERVE, BAD HOTEL.
My wife and I recently stayed at Civilian for a 4-day weekend. The room was very nice and comfortable, the entire staff were friendly and helpful (especially Michael at the front desk), and its conveniently located to the theaters and restaurant options. Wed absolutely stay again next time we visit.
Great location and clean rooms. Rooms are small but it’s NYC so don’t expect anything else, we were able to have our luggage out and still get around the bed. There is only enough room to hang up a couple of jackets and a small cubby under the bed for a small carryon luggage. Hydration station on each floor is a brilliant idea! There is a safe in the room, steamer for your clothes and drybar hairdryer. They didn’t provide any housekeeping services for our 6 night stay, for the cost per night, it shouldn’t be an extra charge. We also were not informed it was an extra charge when booking or when checking in. We also had to ask two times one day to get more toilet paper and it took an hour to get it after we asked a second time. Bathroom wasn’t designed the best. Shower has half wall instead of a door, wall should come out further to prevent water from getting all over the floor and back of door. Wouldn’t have been that big of an issue if we had housekeeping providing fresh towels each day. Also bathroom door/walls are frosted glass, nothing like seeing the figure of your spouse on the toilet while you are in bed and vice versa.

2022-02-19Perfect location for access to everything without the hassle and noise.Rooms are well appointed with everything one may need because after all, why come to NYC just to stay in your room?!The decor is exquisitely curated with photos, props, and set designs from Broadway shows and life. The design of the entire hotel gives a feel of behind the scenes/ back stage access that delivers both excitement and comfort.I was warmly welcomed and look forward to my future visits. The staff throughout the hotel (Check-in/out to GM) were exemplary! The entire team is accommodating and they are stewards to hold this gem carefully for all to enjoy.

2022-01-16Very cool vibe… Tons of theatre artifacts & images. Outstanding decorations & creature comforts. Friendly, eager to please staff. Rooms & bar very clean. Huge pillows on bed. Breakfast had cappuccino, pastries, bagels, yogurt and fresh fruit. The fresh cut fruit was delicious, but wish they had a protein option such as hard boiled eggs. Location is close to all theaters 🎭. Loved it & going to make this our new hotel for weekend getaways to see shows!

2022-05-26This was my first time at this hotel and it did not disappoint! The mobile check-in is the best I’ve ever experienced. The Staff were all very nice. The decor throughout is beautiful and the room, although small, is thoughtfully designed to make you feel comfortable. I was in a cozy queen and the only item I would recommend for that room is a hanger to be able to use the clothes steamer (which they provide). Breakfast was perfect for either sit down or grab and go. The restaurant/bar atmosphere is also very pleasant. Highly recommend!!

2022-01-28We chose this hotel for its location and fair pricing. Suffice to say it was a lovely hotel and the location is amazing. Right by Times Square.Staff were super helpful and upgraded our room which was really nice. Pricing was fair although I’ve seen it’s increased considerably since we stayed. The design is gorgeous and the bathroom had a lovely walk in shower. It wasn’t made clear that the room service wasn’t done daily as part of the cost per night and an extra fee every day.Our TV never worked for the week that we stayed and when we asked for it to be fixed, it wasn’t which was disappointing. Luckily we were out all the time exploring the amazing city.I also got stuck in the lift which was really scary but that was fixed quickly.I would recommend this hotel but think there is some work to be done on the two points made above. Thanks for the stay!

2022-02-15Me and My boyfriend live in Brooklyn but stayed here for a couples weekend. The hotel is absolutely gorgeous. The rooms are very small but VERY elegant and clean and gorgeous and the views are outstanding. The bar downstairs is so beautiful OMG I never wanted to leave its so beautiful and the staff is very sweet. Even though the room is very tiny, they made it gorgeous with red velvet and a red velvet seating area and when you put your feet down on the floor from the bed the bed base lights up its so cool. We will definitely be coming back! 5 stars to the manager of this place!

2022-05-11From the moment you walk into the lobby, the staff warmly welcomes you and you immediately feel at home. We traveled on a red eye from California and they had coffee for us immediately. The location was perfect for us, as we were seeing shows. The architecture is beautifully designed for the theatre district. The rooms are cozy and the city views incredible. Added bonus, black out shades when you are ready to sleep and say goodnight to the city views. The staff is knowledgeable about the area and were so helpful. We will be back.

2022-02-22I visited New York just for the Presidents day long weekend. After two days of online research, I found Civilian Hotel, near Times Square.I wanted to stay in a room with a queen size bed. The rooms are Super Super tiny. No closet space, pretty much queen size bed, small sitting area, and a bath. I was ok with my surprise of the tiny room, since I was doing the tourist attractions around the City and wasn’t staying in the room other than rest. The initial greet of this simple, yet elegant Hotel was very Pleasant. Check-in was quick and painless. The Civilian Hotel was very chic, clean, and very polished for its reasonable price to stay near Times Square.Location was about two short blocks from Times Square. Walking distance to a variety of foods and Broadway shows.Last day, I was checking out but my flight wasn’t for several hours out. The front desk was able to keep my luggage until I was ready to leave. The staff went above and beyond to make me feel good. Thank you CIVILIAN HOTEL for my pleasant experience.

2022-06-07The Civilian does not disappoint, from the wonderful check-in & out process, (THANK YOU MICHAEL FOR THE WONDERFUL SERVICE!!:) to the beautiful room with a stunning view, you cannot go wrong with this wonderful hotel. The tastefully designed room will have you filled with awe from when you walk into the room. Even though the rooms are on the smaller side, they have made sure to utilize every inch in the most productive way making it very easy to store all of my things. I also truly loved the steps the hotel has taken towards sustainability, including the water bottle/glass refill stations on every floor! (LOVED THIS) I could go on and on... but you should check it out for yourself! I was so happy to be a CIVILIAN for a night, thank you all for the amazing experience! I am very much looking forward to staying again in the future.

2022-04-05This hotel was cozy, clean, and had a nice vibe to it. Best for just a one night stay though. We stayed 4 nights and did not end up enjoying our stay. The hotel has a hydration station on each floor which makes it convenient to fill up water. Location was great, but if I ever come back to NYC, Ill be staying at a different hotel for the following reasons:1) Although mostly quiet, we could hear everything that was going on in the hallway, so doors were not very soundproof.2) The biggest problem was that the shower does not have a door, which was frustrating given that the entire bathroom floor would unavoidably get wet. We had to ask for towels twice because we didnt receive any the first time we asked for more.3) I guess for a 1-night stay this hotel would be alright. But we stayed 4 nights and there was literally barely any room to unpack. On top of that, the hotel charges you extra $ if you want room service. Kind of pointless and annoying given that youre paying for each nights stay.4) The price I got was fairly good compared to other hotels in the area with good reviews, but Ive seen its prices go up a lot. I saw better deals of hotels elsewhere, but I wanted to be close to Broadway and came to Civilian based on the reviews I read. I regret not having booked a more comfortable hotel before my trip. After all, everything is close by and taking the sub is easy and expedient.

2022-04-13I really enjoyed my stay here. I thought it was in a great location and felt very safe at the hotel. I think the room was small, (its NYC), but it was clean, so comfortable, and updated. I really loved it.I thought everyone on the staff that I spoke to was so nice. I decided to shorten my stay and they were so helpful to cancel the reservation & make sure that I was refunded. I would highly recommend staying here & I would stay here again. I thought it was great.
