TL;DR summary: We had a mixed experience at Collective Retreats. While the concept is unique and we enjoyed certain aspects of our overnight stay, there is an overall lack of attention to detail which caused frequent frustration; at this price, we expected a much better experience.Directions to find their water taxi were unclear — we’re from NYC and very familiar with how to get around — but finally someone called to help. The boat was quite small, which made for a bumpy ride. My family booked two Summit tents with en suite bathrooms, which were attractively furnished and our kids loved. However, one tent was missing the complimentary coffee and French press, while the other had a broken safe and a wet cleaning rag had been left on the toilet. Our tents were also not next to each other, but on either side of one occupied by a couple who were probably not thrilled to have kids running back and forth (and I can’t blame them). The setting is gorgeous, and as the sun went down we felt very fortunate indeed to have that view. We’d lucked out with perfect early fall weather. But after we sat down for dinner and placed our order, no food arrived for an hour and a half. Other people who were seated after us were already eating, so it was clearly not the fault of the kitchen. Our server never came to check on us and we had to flag down two or three people before the manager took charge and got our dinner out to us, and he thoughtfully said he would comp our meal. The food was uneven — some dishes were delicious, while the salmon wasn’t as good as the fish tacos we got from a food cart the following day. They provide s’mores kits, which our kids loved, and we had a lot of fun by the campfire under the stars. Children were running around having a blast, and we know our kids will remember that part of our stay fondly. There is near constant noise from helicopters and boat traffic, and some Friday night party boats had music blasting. Ear plugs are provided at check-in, but I’d recommend bringing a white noise machine and maybe even taking a sleeping pill to get through it. We did not expect that level of noise. We were all woken up during the night. There is a Concierge available by text, which is advertised as an “anytime” service, but we did not receive a response when we texted to ask if the pillows were filled with down or feather-free. The website lists breakfast as being available for delivery at 7:30 a.m., but the Concierge told me it didn’t start until 8 a.m. Okay, 8 will be fine — but come morning our food wasn’t delivered until 8:30, and I had to text twice to ask what was going on. They were apologetic but this was extremely annoying, especially after our late dinner the night before.Friends who stayed overnight as well told me their food was also delivered half an hour late, and that the communal bathrooms were a mess in the morning, with no one on hand to clean them.In sum: for the most part, we enjoyed our time on the island, but this is an overpriced place for what you get.
Unforgettable experience! Amazing sunset views on a relaxing lounge chair. I went alone on a community night in 2019 and stayed in a journey tent. The staff was really friendly and helpful. You can get ice delivered to your tent. The tent was clean and in a good location. The bed was very comfortable. The campfire was super fun and the other guests were friendly. As for the negative reviews, its camping everyone. Its very comfortable camping but, youre outside, there are bugs and dirt on the ground. Im going again this week and staying in a posh outlook shelter. Will update my review:) this is a must do for any NY’er.
Know what you’re signing up for. We booked a staycation in the journey tent for our anniversary months in advance but had to change our date well over a week before the original check in because of a surprise work event. The hotel tried to not let us change stating “changes were only for extreme emergencies” and not following their written cancellation policy. I shouldn’t have had to quote the fine print to the concierge on the phone to get them to follow it. Started out the stay with a bad taste in my mouth. We had fun but unfortunately it’s just not worth the money we paid for it. The views from the tent were very nice. Note that when the island closes they close the gate to the property so you are essentially locked in to any of their food/drink options at that moment. Hate to say it—- but you’re paying to wake up with that view so buy the front row tent if you’re gonna go this route
Possibly good in theory, simply awful in execution. Some problems were the fault of Collective while some are just due to the location which makes for an excellent day trip, a terrible overnight stay. Collective blended luxury and camping in the worst way possible. The floors of the tents are wood, but they are untreated so you get splinters; grass would be better. There is pointless furniture, but its light and cheap so wind knocks it down. The tents themselves seem to have been designed by a high school dropout; the vents are so unintelligently placed that even minor winds result in very loud flaps. There are loud horns from ferries until late into the night and blasting music from party boats until even later. The advertised gourmet food does not hold a candle to the Manhattan standard and certainly is not worth the price. The bathrooms claimed to be sanitized after each use were maybe cleaned once a day at most. The rooms themselves were not clean on arrival so expectations were set low immediately, yet still kept not getting met. SUMMARY: the website makes many claims that are simply not delivered; this place is managed with comedic incompetence and does not at all warrant the price tag.
This place was awesome for glamping. It was as rustic as you could possibly get a NYC location. Top quality canvass tents accommodations, bathroom and staff. Food overpriced but very well made! The only drawbacks are things that collective retreat can NOT control… like heavy thunderstorms or the noise from an active port… helicopters, party boat, etc.Everything in their control was ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS… most notebly morning yoga with Zia, s’mores, spa quality soaps and lotions in the bathroom … super high quality bathroom napkins ;).
Pricey but dope af and super chill. Cleanst place I ever stayed at. Stayed in the trailer one which was super modern and verye functional. Stayed June 13th to june 15th 2021. Not much to do on the site itself besides hang out, relax and drink/eat but its glamping, so its just fancy camping s o just bring good people and your fine. Rode the 4 wheelers and the bikes at the rental place near by which was super fun and chill. Tons of areas to explore on the island. Id say you would need at least 2 nights here. But the service was crazy crazy good and everyone was nice af. Food was banging af and had live music for dinners which was dope af also. Overall amazing experience that I would recommend everyone to at least try once. Basically a mini relaxing staycation without having to take a plane or long drive.
The experience was amazing. Quick ferry ride over, where the captain throws a bit of knowledge at you and gave a round about tour of the island. Then youre greeted by hosts who take your party by golf cart to the main dining area. We sat outside on one of the best summer nights, watched an amazing sunset and had a world class dinner from a renowned chef! So incredible. Were even considering glamping there! 😁👍
Amazing experience. Phenomenal service. Dinner was delicious. I was very impressed. Tents were extremely comfortable. Bathrooms/facilities were great - decor, efficiency, bath products, water pressure, everything. Wish we would have read more and asked about the s’mores/campfire add-on because we definitely would have purchased. On our last night we had a thunderstorm/lightning and the staff, especially Tim, kept us informed and made sure our safety came first. 100% will return. Definitely recommend. Our 3 day experience was unmatched. Breath taking views. Very relaxing. Bikes available. I cannot express how impressed I am with this place.
Go to Aboricualifeinusa in YouTube for a full review video of Collective Retreats!!Excellent place to take a break from all. A nice tent to spend the night. A Restaurant bar and many amenities. Smores at night for free! Also a complementary breakfast with great food. Enough to do the trick of starting the day. Free coffee in too also! Customer service was perfect. They pick u up at the ferry terminal and bring u back. Great experience!!
Very romantic date, we arrived at pier 25 and were taken on a nice boat ride to governors island and then whisked away on golfer carts to the dinner in a tent. Food was very good on the pricey side but worth it for the experience. Then after dinner we sat by a fire pit where you can purchase a s’more kit. 10/10 for romantic vibes, your significant other will be very happy.
Due to tropical storm Henri we could not overnight in the booked tent but we got unbelievably nice support from the Collective retreat team who kept us updated about the situation and in finding a replacement hotel in Manhattan. Thank you very much and we hope one day we´ll get another chance in sleeping in one of your tents.
Great in theory, terrible in execution. Governors Island is great, but I wouldnt recommend staying overnight. We stayed at Collective Governors Island in July, about 1 month after they opened up. Based on our experience, Id say they still need a LOT of time to iron out a lot of issues, so Id recommend holding off!!! Quick recap of our experience below...- The staff was very friendly, but unorganized and unsure of any details when we asked questions. Simple questions about the island, food selection, ferry schedule, etc. couldnt be answered.- Our tent was dirty when we checked in (dirt/sand on the floor, dirty sheets, melted ice in the cooler) even though the tent was cleaned right before we arrived.- Our tent was near the bathroom trailer, which had additional lights around it, so it was essentially trying to sleep in daylight for us. BRING AN EYEMASK!!! Earplugs are probably a good idea as well, the trails are made of gravel and the tent walls are quite thin, so you hear everything.- They still didnt have their liquor license when we went and you werent allowed to bring your own alcohol, so we had to sneak some in- The food selection wasnt ideal. We bought a couple of boxes to grill ourselves and not only were they outrageously expensive, the amount of food they gave us was barely enough for 1 person. Very small servings and not that enjoyable. We didnt order anything from the restaurant, but the vast majority of people that did complained about cold food and very long waits.- Breakfast was also a bit of a disaster. They had a buffet style breakfast with waffles, eggs/bacon, fruit, pastries, etc. The staff was not prepared at all for everyone actually showing up to eat breakfast even though it was the only option on the entire island. They immediately ran out of coffee, eggs, bacon and waffles. Incredibly frustrating, especially considering there was no place else to go to grab something. Bring snacks.- There isnt much to do at all within the actual retreat. We were ok with that as our goal was to relax, but just keep that in mind if you are expecting any type of entertainment once the sun goes down
My husband and I enjoyed a weekend here and it was lovely! You can explore the island during the day (they have castle Williams and some other buildings with interesting infrastructure) Also, there is an ongoing Night of 1000 Jack o’ lanterns which is amazing!!LIKES:-Location! I don’t think you can see the whole magnificence of the city from anywhere else. It is breathtaking!-Campfire: Roasting marshmallows while watching the city lights is just amazing!!! It’s like being in the mountains and the city at the same time.Restaurant: very nice and cozy and the staff was very attentive. Nice live music.Restrooms / showers: I loved these! They are shared bathrooms but since each one is on a tent once you are in you just lock it from the inside and the place is all yours. Very private and clean. They provide towels, shampoo, conditioner, etc.Tents: the cutest thing! They have a bed, a fireplace heater, and a safe box for your values. Simple but nice and at some point at night you can hear some crickets!! In the morning though, it can get pretty noisy because of all the helicopters. That’s not an issue for me since I have a really deep sleep but my husband told me it was loud lol.DISLIKES:Cleanliness: our tent floor was literally filthy! Under the bed was even worse! Lots of dirt and even some hairs which grossed me out! I know this is camping but for the high price one pays they should have the tents sparkling clean after each guest.Alcohol: You can’t bring alcohol inside the island (they check your bags at the ferry. You can bring your bottle of water though...) they do sell alcohol at the bar and restaurant but at very expensive prices.Booking: so when I booked they “suggested” the chef’s dinner which was $150 per person. They let you know you can’t bring food to the island (but you can! At the ferry they let me pass food with no problem) they make it sound like if you don’t make a reservation then basically you will starve yourself. I took the chance and as I said brought some sandwiches, but once there we learned you can still make a reservation at your check in and eat “A la carte” so you pay what you eat. My husband and I did that and payed $150 for the both of us tip included instead of the initial $300 they suggested. We had sandwiches next day for breakfast (they provide coffee, water, cups, etc in your tent)Also, you can bring your own marshmallows as I did. At the campfire we learned people paid $12 for a s’mores box and it only had 4 marshmallows.Because of these I take one star out but all in all we had a great time!! I definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to experience camping under the stars like never before!
This place is the best!! Glamorous camping may seem slightly absurd but it’s really great for those not into sleeping on the ground. At the end of the day it’s still camping. There are bugs, the elements, etc.The staff at Collective Governors Island are amazing. They strike a balance of being super helpful when you want and totally leaving you alone if that’s what you prefer. Make sure to sign up for their discount alerts!
We stayed 2 nights from Friday to Sunday in the Journey Tents which are the smaller moderate tents. Overall it was a cool and different experience. What we loved:-Proximity to NYC and BK-Friendliness of the staff (once you found one)-Amenities in the room (free coffee, tea and filtered water)-The comfort of the bed and pillows, Very cozy sheets and conforter.- Activities on the grounds, movie nights and Smores. What we didnt love:-No one to guide you to the location of the resort youre left to your own devices. And walking about 10-15mins with luggage so pack light.- The cost. It was expensive and we had a few issues.- The cleanliness of the tent. The comforter was stained, and the floor of the tent was filled with gravel upon arrival.-dinner and food options with the resort are limited (dietary wise) and so expensive. Their ferry to flame dinner is 120$ per person.-Very relaxed security. Anyone can walk in there and No one stops them anyone visiting govenors island during the day can walk into the resort.-no alcohol in resort. (Pending liquor license) But you can get drinks outside on the island.-showers were cold and weak. And the toilets didnt work great. But this is a minor thing.-Lastly its run by younger people which is fine but they arent trained properly to handle any kind of situation. Our last day there it rained horribly. They didnt cover the fire pit so it flooded, the whole area did. They didnt seem to have the proper equipment to take care of the pools and rivers the storm creates.
Beautiful view but not worth the money. And not glamping at all. Ikea decor. Several showers with either broken taps, or no cold water. The tent was very very hot but there was not a single shadow in the facility to sit and relax. Bed (specially the frame) and pillow really lousy. But the worst by far was the restaurant: a forgettable pasta entree the size of a tennis ball for $29. And it does include a 18% tax (they call themselves a no tip restaurant) for a two person table.
Terrible experience with Collective Retreats on Govenors Island NY. I highly recommend anyone thinking about staying here to reconsider and save your money!- not for anyone who likes to have fun or be active. This is for someone who wants to sit and be unbothered for their entire stay- unorganized staff, most of which just sat around doing nothing while their guests walk around the site aimlessly trying to figure out what/where/when/how to do activities, eat, get information, etc. these are NORMAL things to expect when you arrive to your place of accommodation.- poorly kept tents; dirty sheets, used items from previous guests still in the tent from who knows how long ago- privacy is a non-factor; intimacy from other tents can be heard as if you were in their tent with them, tents are thin and with any tiny bit of light at night you can see shadows of the people inside doing their business- big promises, no follow through- not for anyone with a handicap; it is a 15-20min walk while hauling your luggage- everything shuts down at 6pm on the island so you’re out of luck if you want: an adult beverage (per their guidelines, outside liquor is prohibited), food other than the cardboard they feed you within the camp site, enjoy activities other than (1) set of cornhole & (1) set of lawn blocks)- lastly, the operations manager who WAS on-site the day we arrived was too busy entertaining her 8-10 year old daughter/sister/niece to care about the concerns of her guests. If high level management is dismissive of their guests needs it’s no wonder their staff carries the same attitude.- all the above was addressed with staff the day of arrival while the operations manager was present, she definitely heard our concerns as she made side comments to her staff and not directly addressing the issues with us (I can hear you, Vanessa. I’m standing right here.) The above issues were also discussed with a different manager after our group of 8 people decided to forfeit our second night, he was apologetic and seemed genuine but was still unable to follow-through with his promise of reimbursing our second night. It’s been a week since our stay.SAVE YOUR MONEY AND STAY IN THE CITY! You will have MUCH more fun/flexibility/comfort just visiting the island for a few hours and taking the ferry back to your hotel.

2022-01-24Me and my husband had a wonderful experience at Collective retreats. Is an extraordinary experience from the beginning to the end. They picked us up in a private water boat, food and service was over the top and spending the nights in this small island close to NYC but away from everything was the bes second honeymoon we could have!Really love the place and the experience!!

2022-05-30Ive been here twice. The first with my spouse in October 2021. It was warm and the end of the season. We had perfect weather, atmosphere, food and drinks. It was romantic and lovely. Except for the noise from what seemed like innumerable helicopters, I was so impressed that I recommended the trip to my close group of girlfriends and booked in November for a trip in early May. They had just opened for the season. The weather was horrible though. The tent and bathroom facilities were fine as before. The staff did their best to keep us dry and warm but the wind was so strong, we thought wed end up floating on the river in the tent. It stayed intact and dry inside however cold. The food was delicious though there was a limited menu I assume because it was so early in the season. The chicken and fish were great. Grilled mushrooms and carrot confit were fabulous. The beef though tasty was overcooked. The weather made everything get cold quickly however. The staff was indeed young and sometimes their inexperience showed but they did try to be accommodating. A special shoutout to Ms. Pam who was especially kind and attentive to us.As a final note, I recommend that you take advantage of their bad weather cancellation policy and reschedule for good weather. Otherwise, I will go back again later in the season and only in good weather.

2022-06-10Stayed one night with my fiancé and parents to celebrate our engagement. Payed their exorbitant prices because it seemed really well put together. Most of the staff was courteous and the accommodations are nice. However the place is clearly understaffed, food and drink service is slow and disorganized, and if you expect to do anything after dinner, BYOB!!!! Without calling last call they closed the bar and killed the live music at 9:30, an hour before it was supposed to be over because the woman running the bar clearly just wanted to be done for the night despite the fact that EVERYONE was of course still there drinking. She was unapologetic and refused to let us buy a drink or a bottle of wine to take back to our tent. So we paid thousands of dollars for what was essentially a 3-4 hour mediocre dinner experience with a nice view, and went to bed. The promised breakfast wasn’t delivered, and no one offered to seat us for breakfast at the restaurant. Whoever is managing the place is cutting every corner.

2021-10-08We had our September wedding at governors collective and it couldn’t have been more perfect. The views are unbelievable and the venue is just beautiful. It is a perfect mix of outdoorsy with a view of NYC (which is just minutes away). The staff is professional, helpful, and friendly. The food is delicious (described as “the best wedding food I’ve ever had” by multiple guests). And the accommodations are unique and delightful. Breakfast the next morning was delicious and a real treat delivered right to the room.I can’t say enough amazing things about Governors Collective it was exceptional in every way.Special shout out to Damaris who made planning a breeze and the wedding perfect and stress free.5 stars10/10A+👏👏👏

2022-05-23This past Monday I stayed at the collective retreat on Governors Island. Upon checking in I was pleasantly surprised with how beautiful the location was - between the view of New York City and the waterfront. But the cracks began to quickly show, the staff are clearly very new and have had very little training for a 5 star experience. The staff member who showed us to our tent did not even know where the tent was and was checking each tent to see if it was number 10. I gave him the benefit of the doubt that it is the start of the season, but shouldn’t staff be trained prior to the season opening? We didn’t even get informed of the location of the toilets, or how to contact a member of staff. Later we found out this was available via the QR code email we were asked to scan at reception, however, no staff member made that clear. In addition, we were shown the ice storage in the room, but weren’t told who to ask or how to get ice. This was also the case for the complimentary coffee and tea. We saw this is the room, but we’re not told how to get water for this. There were two complimentary bottles of water in the room, but surely that’s not enough water for guests to drink AND make morning coffee/tea with. Lastly, there were no creamers in the tent. Instead, there were four empty creamer containers that had been used by a previous guest in the jar with half opened sugar. In regards to dinner, no one seemed to have any clue about our reservation. Tables weren’t set and the guests were crammed into one side of the restaurant tent. Considering I had pre-booked a table, I was confused at this. None of the staff even seemed aware of the reservation list and when we asked to be seated, the staff seemed lost and confused. We ordered the Argentinian grill menu. Our server tried her best, but brought out the wrong food. She brought us chicken when we ordered beef then said “you’ll have to wait if you don’t want the chicken.” We proceeded to wait since we did not want nor did we order the chicken. In addition, the food was cold and bland. I explained the carrots were cold to our server and she said the kitchen would reheat them for us. This is an extremely odd response. It was not our fault that the carrots were cold, why should we have to now eat reheated carrots. Shouldn’t these have been prepared freshly again for the price of 95 dollars each guest. The grill menu itself was very poor and I will certainly not recommend it. The beef was tough (and cold… when it should’ve came straight off the grill), and the salad lacked flavour. We had one mini sliced potato between both of us.Not one person correctly poured our water without spills going all over the table. To top it off, after spilling it, no one even came to clean it up! This is not a five star experience. We also got given 3 different cocktail menus throughout the night that I didn’t even know which one was correct by the end! And when we did order some cocktails, they were missing ingredients (e.g., espresso beans) because they weren’t “in stock yet.”Then, we moved on to s’mores when a member of staff was shouting at the table next to us “there is not any fire service on this island so you should put the wood down or we else we will all burn down before the fire department gets here.” Why would a member of staff even say that to guests? I was honestly quite horrified. The card we received on check in stated breakfast was 7am - 9.30am. However, we were not told what, If anything, we had to do to receive it. I left the tent at 7.30 and spent around 10 minutes searching for a member of staff to ask for breakfast and some water, to which she replied, “uh one second let me get Josh?” Then, she disappeared. Again, we were left to our own devices. The overall experience didn’t match the quality of service we received. We were forgotten about and not looked after like the ‘retreat’ I had in mind. Everything I had been sold online and in emails seemed false and fabricated.

2022-06-28Fun camping experiences! Getaway from the city, but not too far away. Clean and nice service! Great view of statue liberty and downtown!

2021-10-17Collective retreats on Govenors Island is a magical experience. The views are gorgeous of the water. You feel away from the city - but still thrilled to see the nightlights of the downtown skyline. Our Journey + tent was nicely appointed, with a water view and fancy enough to feel extravagant. The Journey+ experience has “private shared bathrooms” that are tented with a zip closure enclosing a sink, flush toilet and shower. Very nice & comfortable. We didn’t run into anyone while using and it was never awkward. However , their attention to detail with the bathrooms could improve with a quick run to Bed Bath & Beyond; not every bathroom had a hook to hang your towel; not every bathroom had a stool to place your clothes; and my particular bathroom had 2 shampoos and no body wash. All silly, easy to solve details. But the most annoying detail, was discovering my towel & washcloth were stained and dirty. How does anyone fold and place a stack of towels in a guest room without noticing old stains? Hum. Perplexing. The manager semi-graciously listened to our issues and offered a 20% discount to the room. While this should have felt tremendously satisfying to have our complaint heard, there was a whiff of judgment, as though we were high maintenance guests to want clean towels.I don’t think I would go back, but we had a fun night out.Collective Retreats- I’d advise a shopping trip for necessary bathroom accessories- hooks and stools - and your staff needs to step up their laundry game and their attention to detail on cleanliness.

2021-07-29This was a pretty cool experience. Most people will be coming from NYC (I am from North Carolina), so, I was mostly excited to camp near the Statue of Liberty and NYC Skyline. The staff is very friendly and attentive. Drinks were solid. Food was good but not amazing for the price. The room was very hot until night. My biggest criticism is the amount of helicopter noise almost ALL DAY long ; for a minute, you think you’re on a military island the way Governors Island was originally intended. I super highly recommend taking the water taxi into town if you have time; you are treated to the most wonderful and exhilarating boat ride along the south of Manhattan to Pier 25. That was practically the highlight of our trip!
