Colonial House Inn in New York
Small rooms, but absolutely comfortable in a great neighborhood area away from the coldness of Manhattans industrials. Minimal comforts traveler here with a preference for warm ambience, eccentric interiors and location. Bed was dangerously comfortable. Surprisingly generous compartments. Very cozy bathroom space and more importantly, very welcoming staff. Our weekend stay with Colonial House Inn has left me feeling rejuvenated and ready for my week. Thank you!
Location is very convenient. Blue line is only less than 2 minute walk. Staff is friendly and the place is clean. It may need a few renovations but that what gives it its charm. It is a shared bathroom hotel but there are a couple of rooms you can book for a private washroom. They host a couple of activities during your stay like wine tasting. Overall happy with my stay!
It is an old house tha has been adapted as a hotel. The room was very small just to have two small luggages. Both the shared bathroom and the bedroom were clean. The staff were friendly. The breakfast is basic, it includes beagles, coffee, orange juice, cereal and milk. The hotel does not have elevator and we were at the fourth floor, so if you have a big luggage you should consider to go up it by the stairs. The area around is nice and it looks safe. I understand that NY is an expesive city, however, I think the hotel was expensive compare to the kind of breakfast and the size of the bedroom.
Service is very polite and helpful. Continental breakfast is served until 10am; tea and coffee I served throughout the day. Our room was small but very clean and communal bathrooms are generally on each floor and also clean. However, there are rooms with a private bathroom as well. The hotel is situated in a great location!! We would come back as it is a great functional base if you want to explore the city.
The stars go to The staff as they were super friendly and helpful. There is no elevator, the stairs are very narrow. The superior room is a standard room at a good hotel, nothing special. The bathroom pluming needs serious work. The carpet is old. The air-condition is not great, its manual! I dont think its a kid friendly as it is very hard to take the strollers upstairs with the kid and luggage. The breakfast is very basic, bagel with cream cheese and jam, cereal with milk, bananas and apples, hot tea and coffee...Location is good as its close to the E and C train, One block away from the 23rd st station.
There should be a designation other than hotel for places like this, like Victorian guest house. I had to climb 4 long flights of stairs with my luggage, share a bathroom that I had to go out in the hallway to use. The room was small, with an a.c. unit that doesnt cool the room off, most likely because the hallways are not air conditioned. This is probably a good place for someone who will spend no time in their room. I will say the place was clean. To some it up in one word: Victorian.
The Superior room was very comfortable, the location is perfect. I would recommend to bring ear plugs, but that goes for any hotel. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. Its just great value, especially considering the price. The only thing I didnt care for was the food quality (breakfast). But hey, Chelsea Market is right around the corner ;).
The rooms were small and quaint but clean. We werent planning on staying in the room for long and it was perfect for that reason. They supplied all the necessary amenities. The breakfast selection was simple but sufficient. I enjoyed the location and the proximities to attractions.
2 days in and I have been very disappointed by the room conditions and rude staff. I requested the password to their 5G WiFi but they claim not to know it, only directing me to the one that’s glacier slow(attaching speed test from Google) which made it impossible to do phone calls on the Internet even. Staff just says she is not responsible for the speed of the WiFi. Fine. Air Conditioning is only blowing air and not cooling as NYC temp is hitting 100F. And staff says you should try setting the temp before believing it wasn’t working. In the end she says I will notify maintenance and hang up the phone. Let’s see if they will fix it the next day. Travelers should be aware of this trap. I thank myself for only having booked it for four days(non refundable for a reason?)
We cannot say enough positive things about Colonial House Inn... our go to hotel in NY. More a B & B, we are made to feel right at home and we make ourselves right at home. Our early check in was greatly appreciated and we were not rushed out the door even after check out. I sat quietly watching Twilight on TV waiting for my daughter and her boyfriend into the late evening hours after check out. The gentleman at the desk conversed with me lightly about Twilight and never once made me feel like an intruder. We love Colonial House Inn and consider it our home in the city. Thank you to everyone at Colonial House for making us feel like family!! Well be back soon.
It is a pity that it is no longer a hotel because we loved it despite the simplicity of its rooms. The area is ideal, the heart of Chelsey, close to the docks, quiet but lively streets, beautiful single family homes. In the area there were cheap restaurants where you could eat from the menu, small clothing stores, cafes...
There was no room for the rooms and I opted for the suit. Elegant apartment overlooking the street, quiet, clean and well furnished. Air conditioning and TV with sitting area. Passed only one night but happy. Breakfast not great but it was like staying at home, boiled egg coffee and pancakes. Convenient for metro C which leads from north to south, 10 min walk from the departures of night cruises on the river.
Halfway between a hotel and a guest house. Not many places for breakfast (from 7am) which is quite limited in choice but is rich in quantity. It was not possible to open the window of our room that did not have air conditioning, only a fairly noisy ventilation in the bathroom could renew a little air. There was no desk either in our room. Muffins are available 24 hours a day and a small aperitif is offered from 17:30 to 19:00.
I recommend this small hotel of about twenty rooms which offers the whole range, from the small economy room without bathroom to the large luxurious suite. The house, very well located in Chelsea, has a history and a soul that remains visible with the contemporary paintings exposed everywhere. Its nice to come back to this quiet place after the hustle and bustle of Midtown, and enjoy a hot drink. The people at the front desk have always been available and friendly.
It is a large old townhouse transformed into a hotel. The floors creak and its age is noticed, which gives it character and makes it interesting. My partner and I went to NY for tourism and we only stopped there to sleep, so the really important thing was the comfort of the bed: for us it was exceptional. The room was very small, but if youre only going to sleep, it hardly matters. Knowing that we were staying in a place with a shared bathroom, we were going with a certain rejection ... However we saw that there were enough bathrooms and the most important thing was the cleanliness of these: we were pleasantly surprised how clean and careful everything was. If you are going to go sightseeing the place is well located: quiet area (good to rest) It is not in the center but there is a subway next door and if you want to walk to Times Square, it is 20min. Our favorite part: the breakfasts. The buffet was small, but we didnt feel we were missing anything: various types of bagels, pancakes, peanut butter, yogurt, fruit, cereals, tea, coffee ... For quality, price, cleanliness, location and treatment: I recommend it.

2022-03-22This is such a wonderful place. I have been staying here for years when I come to NYC and would not stay at any other place. The staff really makes you feel as though you are part of the family and it honestly is a second home to me and now my partner as well. It is very clean and the staff is so helpful in every way. No question is to big to ask them, as they always if they do not know the answer will look it up for you. As soon as I walk through those doors it feels like home. I recommend this to everyone that is looking for a great centrally located place to stay. The subway is so close and there are many great eating places around there. It is a beautiful building with wonderfully decorated rooms that are so warm and cozy. I am coming back for sure for Gay Pride. I would be lost without such a wonderful place to stay in NYC. Thanks again for the wonderful stay and I know my return visits will always be as great as my first time I stayed there many years ago. This place has a heart of gold as do the staff.

2022-07-01Excellent place to stay! Many memories here! UI stayed here multiple times! The suite with the hot tub is my favorite! - has a great shower too! Very peaceful vibe and great location! The roof top terrace was nice too! I wish the new owner would make it a hotel again, sad.

2021-06-18I was looking for something relatively inexpensive and close enough to public transportation that also had decent reviews. This place is certainly worth it. Clean and fairly cute, more of a B&B than a hotel. The staff were super friendly, and despite being kinda tiny, the room was just fine. Rumor has it theres a clothing-optional roof deck but the weather wasnt all that great and I didnt spend much time at the Inn. But Id go back!

2018-12-09We enjoyed our stay very much. The staff is very friendly, we enjoyed the 24 hour coffee and evening happy hour. The Christmas decorations were beautiful and it felt cozy like being at home. It is in a great location near a lot of great restaurants and close to access for the subway. We are so glad we stayed here (vs a hotel chain) and got what felt like a true New York experience, being in an older and unique, yet beautiful building.

2021-03-19Biggest Bargain in NYCThis is a gem shinning in scenic Chelsea within walking distance to restaurants, shows and shopping.Room rates are way below the cost of what uptown hotels charge. The concierge desk can steer you to discounts on show tickets and arrange economical transportation if needed. They also offer a grab and go free breakfast! The inn practices all the protocols for cleaning during the pandemic which, according to news reports, should end soon.

2019-12-21Spent 10 days in NYC with the fiancee. Great location for subway trips, you can get anywhere on the city just by walking a few meters and taking the sub. Room was great, confortable beds, clean bathroom everyday (we got a suite - greatly recommended! But their shared bathrooms were clean all the times we saw them). Staff was amazing, really attentive to our stay there. We really have no cons except to climbing up 3 flights of stairs, but that kept us on shape :) (being in the US right). Pillows could be better but then we didnt ask them any replacements so they couldnt know it during our stay. Really really recommend it to any couples (or solo travellers!) That want to explore the whole city, while staying at a great location in the heart of Manhattan. We fell in love with it and will certainly be back someday in the future. Couldnt recommend more!
