Parking is not easy. We were visiting our child and as always like to go to the book store to look around . The staff is very helpful , the check out line is confusing for some. Though it moves well. A big positive is that you get a discount with your Barnes an Noble membership on purchases. They also have an extensive Columbia clothing and gift section . A good place to get some school colors.
This bookstore is a swell place for getting university school books, notebooks, and lots and lots of Columbia University swag. The connection between the school and the bookstore is probably the biggest super power of this place. While you can get the books on Amazon or other locations, the bookstore is the most up to date. And they can get books that are backorder or otherwise difficult to locate. They even have used books. It is located subterranean ly right on the edge of campus. There is an escalator down and also stairs. The place can get pretty busy at times, and its packed during parents weekends abs other such events.
Really wish I had read these reviews before purchasing anything online. I can confirm the poor customer service and inability to get a hold of anyone. The phone line rings endlessly until you are disconnected. I arrived to my package emptied of over $100 worth of apparel. UPS has decided the package is not eligible for a claim, and Columbia wont answer. Its really sad that students unable to physically be on campus to purchase apparel cannot have something to celebrate the accomplishment of attending the school. If you purchase anything online be aware the odds of you getting what you paid for are low to none.
The worst bookstore in this universe, I am proud to be a Lion but I feel sick the bookstore is a mess!🤮 They lost my 300$ package and I can’t contact them through phone or email, been 2 weeks and still no reply. Columbia University should deserve a way better admin at bookstore instead of hurting their alumni and visitors.🤢
Pretty ridiculous - can never get hold of anyone regarding my order. Mailbox to leave a message is full, no response to email - its been 3 days. Got hold of two people on the phone and they put you on hold and never get back to you. In-person maybe different, but customers are customers whether in-person or on phone.
Completely agree with many other reviews. The bald guy at the textbook counter is extremely rude and got a really bad attitude. No willingness to do his job properly and help students look for textbooks they need. The bigger problem is other staff at the textbook counter learn from him and mimic his attitude. Something needs to be done seriously.
Its hardly a bookstore. Three fifths of the store is filled with rack upon rack of sweaters, t-shirts, shorts, socks, and caps with COLUMBIA emblazoned upon them. I dont think the store sells magazines anymore, not even the serious ones every bright student should be reading.
The bookstore offers anything a college student would need and be too lazy to go out an buy, including room supplies and stationary, books, clothing, and some food. However, because of the convenience, it is overpriced and appeals more to tourists than students themselves. Their towels are horrible quality, but the sweaters are comfy and soft, and most other things are good. If youre a visiting prospective student, its worth checking out, but dont expect to find normal students shopping there. In the end, youre better off buying Columbia apparel there, but not much else. Its layout is like a typical Barnes and Noble.
All student bookstore that I have went to are pretty expensive so lets just keep that in mind with this post. The book stores very friendly. The staff is more than welcome meme and have a pleasant demeanor when answering even the silliest of questions. They have a large selection of clothing, but nothing that passes 2XL. Ive heard that you could email and request larger sizes, but they rarely respond. Theres a lovely little lounging area in the book part of the store that is great to sit and chill in. This location does not require a key card to get to but if you want to get into the rest of Lerner you will need to get your key card or go around to the other side of the Lerner entrance. Theres also an elevator to this location.
Wrong item received and no responseUpdated 7/6/1/20 3:30 pm- After sending message from their contact link on the website, Abby reached out to me. She is sending a new sweatshirt and has provided a new tracking number.I ordered a Columbia sweatshirt on June 6th. I received a Reolink solar panel on June 26th. I sent an email right after opening the package and finding the wrong item. I received an automatic reply email so I called the store manager, Tom Spalango, listed in the auto reply email. The message on the voicemail stated the box was full and I was unable to leave a voicemail. I called the listed store number. Ive not gotten any response and still do not have the sweatshirt.I sent another email stating I would be more than happy to return the solar panel so that I could receive the item that I ordered, which costed more than the mini solar panel (as advertised on amazon). Its now July 6th and still have not heard from the store and still do no have the sweatshirt. I would definitely avoid ordering anything online from this store.
No one answers the phone, it just rings. I am highly annoyed that I purchased well over 200 in merchandise today and when I returned home to Nj I am missing one of the more expensive items a sweat shirt for my child. Now I have been calling for the last 20 mins before the store closes and no one answers. As an alumni I am highly disappointed and frustrated with this major inconvenience.. smh 🤦♀️
I was not at all impressed with the selection of Columbia gear here. They didnt have a great selection of lanyards and of course had the obligatory ties and that kind of garbage. Its mostly just sweatshirts. This is a pretty mundane book store and I wish Columbia didnt outsource it. They could have done a much more spirited job.
Not the most impressive or useful college campus store I’ve seen. To be fair it’s in New York so it couldn’t be too large I presume, but always lacks something in all department- clothing / stationary / etc. they should work on a more thoughtful selection of products to compete with nearby stores that do better and cheaper.
I ordered a used book to rent. It took them 4 days to confirm, that the book is on the way. I kept getting this very same email (stating, the book is on the way) everyday for 3 more days. I called and was promised the book for the next day (8 days after order). It was not there, furthermore I was told, used rental is not available. Thanks for telling me after 8 days of waiting. The one star goes to one very nice employee at the store actually trying to help me.
So far the biggest bookstore of all different campuses Ive visited through the US. It has a large variety of books (of course) for students or visitors. But most of it you can find an humongous variety of Columbia clothing for sports activities : hoodies, basketball, running, lacrosse, ...If you like this kind of clothing it might be hard to enter this place without purchasing at least a couple of items :)
TEXTBOOK REVIEWSummary: Textbook provider is not catered to students on a budget who need to use the textbook within a timely manner.I ordered a used textbook for pickup on September 10 instead of getting one online because I needed the newest imperial edition of it and I had a BN gift card to use. Keep in mind that I didnt know which textbook would be used until the first class. I received confirmation of my order, which stated that I would be notified when it would be ready for pickup. I waited two weeks before calling the bookstore, and they said the book is still out of stock. Meanwhile, Im using PDFs of old editions to do my homework assignments. On October 3, I received an email that my book was ready to be picked up, 23 days and three homework assignments later. They say when you order a textbook that their local inventory changes daily and if they substitute a different format than the used or used rental that you requested, you will see that in your final bill. Indeed, they charged me for a new edition of the book, which is $60 more (a total of $216.65), but what I dont understand is how in over three weeks their so-called changing local inventory could not provide me with a used edition. I wish they had told me there were no used editions weeks ago because I would have cancelled the order earlier. Luckily I was able to get a full refund within the 30 days of the start of classes according to their Textbook Refund Policy, but if this book came a few days later I dont know how that would play out. Lastly, if theyre going to be the provider for student textbooks, its senseless to make students wait weeks on end to receive a book because of assignment deadlines. I would have asked to borrow someones textbook, but literally everyone is a working grad student who studies part-time (Im an undergrad). Online old SI edition PDF it is.

2022-07-11As usual, there was a great selection of books for kids and for my academic needs. My older daughter got a visor for summer camp, and the toddler got to browse the board books aisle which seemed greatly expanded, but its been a long time since we needed books for a young child, so maybe they have always had a lot.

2022-08-11I purchased a diploma frame, online. It arrived with broken glass and nicks in the wood. No problem - life happens. I called and spoke to bookstore rep who got me connected with Aida (sp?). She was ABSOLUTELY fantastic and is shipping out another same day and she shared she would be packaging it up herself. Very appreciative of this customer service.

2019-11-21The bookstore at Columbia University is allright, but it used to be so much better! Now it has basic stuff like most chain stores, but very little outside the middle of the road. Almost half of the store is clothing and Columbia University merchandise. For a university bookstore, this doesnt really meet the needs.

2022-03-15Great store, has a limited selection of books. But has a great selection of textbooks that non-matriculated persons are able to select from. Always a great resource.!!!

2020-11-10I never thought that I would be treated so badly in this bookstore of this famous university. I am an English student at this university and I personally went to buy a book. I asked a guy with no hair who works there about a book I needed to study English and his treatment to me was super impolite and rude. I went back with him to ask him if by any chance they had a damaged or used version of the book and his answer was worse. Extremely unpleasant and disappointing to be treated like this at this book sale. If you decide to buy a book here , stay away from this guy.
