Common Ground Bar in New York
Good drinks, reasonably priced for the area...although you can never speak highly of snotty service. Totally understood that it is in the heart of the meatpacking district, nevertheless, setting yourself apart should not be hand-in-hand with un-customer focused/friendly atmosphere. Beggars cant be choosers I guess.
It was great, the only downside was that the DJ got mad when I popped a bottle and sprayed it everywhere. Understandable, he was upset and concerned for his equipment since we were right next to the DJ booth. Other than that great experience. Would do it again for sure. Doesn’t hold a candle to Club Risque though
If i could give it zero stars i would. the coat check guy was very rude. he would not explain their policy after i asked a simple question. he almost screamed the whole time “read the sign!” Mind you- there wasn’t a big line nor was he in a rush (i can understand being overwhelmed). no one was in line. i was the only one at coat check. i was taken aback by his attitude. will not recommend going.
First off extremely rude bouncers, we were in line to get in and I have never experienced more rude and judgy people in my life. We went in and drinks were extremely overpriced and DJ was not good. I used the bathroom and SAW A RAT. This place overall is very nasty. They should clean their facilities because it smells.
If youre looking for a great place to vibe with a large group of friends, look no further CG is the spot. Food, drinks, atmosphere are all fantastic. Special thanks to the CG team for keeping the meatpacking a fun place to hang {Winter - Spring - Summer & Fall}Besitos!
Heard that this place is notorious for discrimination against people of color, and especially black women. Unacceptable and intolerable. Shame on the owners, management, bouncers, and everybody that is involved with this establishment. I haven’t been here, and will not go based on the feedback of others. I’d rather spend my “black dollar” at other venues. And I’d encourage others to do the same.
When you’re at Common Ground, listening to banger after banger as sparklers whisk by your table, you know you’ve made it.The service is great, the people are excited to be alive, and the drinks are solid. You’re really here for the vibe though and whether it’s 90s hits or the latest Tik Tok hit, the DJ has it all.The place is structured part restaurant, part bar, part club with a tree in the middle (which somehow really helps with the vibe in a positive way).Highly recommend a visit here if you can get in. Which will be tough.
Disclaimer: Contrary to a recent TikToker…as a woman of color I have had nothing but an extremely positive experience at common ground. Ive been here SEVERAL times. Me and all of my friends are Black/Haitian and we’ve never had ANY issues getting into common ground. The only times weve had issues getting in is when its too crowded and we are physically unable to, that is just how NYC nightlife is. You have to get there before a certain time or else it is very hard to get in without a reservation, especially on weekends! And it’s a shame that due to ONE very vague TikTok video, people who haven’t even been to the bar nor had a genuine experience at Common Ground are now leaving negative reviews to try and bring down ratings.Common Ground is by far my FAVORITE bar in the city. It definitely stands out to me among other bars in the city for a few reasons: Very friendly staff and bouncers, 23+ age group, great music and djs that gives off a fun college bar feel but everybody is in their mid to late 20’s. While it does get crowded on weekends, it’s important to show up before 10:30, as you’ll have an easier time getting in. However, couldn’t recommend this bar enough to people. Don’t know a bar in the city quite like common ground! Big fan over here, and they are VERY inclusive FYI.
Please whatever you do , black women , please avoid this establishment . They’re extremely racist and very blunt about it ! The bouncers are very weird . The owner is extremely racist . Customer service is completely nonexistent . This establishment all around does not give NY vibes ! You can find a better bar with great customer service , better price and a mode sensible manager .
Dangerous place for Poc .The bouncers literally attacked us for being Poc and trying to get in.We called the police and others in line backed up our claim after the bouncers tried to lie on us. but nothing was done in the end.We have started the legal processPlease do not enter this dangerous establishmentIt is awful. No this is not from some tik tok video everyone is talking about
So Lame. Imagine STILL being racist in 2022. You can see on their social media there are no POC unless they are working or famous. People want to open a business somewhere as diverse as NYC and then play games with and discriminate against POC?? NYC isn’t going to stand for it.
I used to love Common Ground with good music, great drinks and friendly people. That all changed Friday night when I was let in only to be told by a bouncer that I had to be 23 to enter. I was here two weeks ago and that policy was not there. On top of that a bouncer named Frank shined very powerful LED light right on my eyes, and proceeded to yell that I leave. I have always had good experiences with Paul and this new bouncer changed the reputation of this bar for me. Would not recommend! I hope that common ground goes back to the way things were done not too long ago.
Cant say enough good things about this bar. Ive lived in NYC for my entire life and have been coming here almost since it opened 4 years ago. It is far and away THE best place to go out in NYC by a mile. Everyone from upper management down to the bathroom attendant has treated me with incredible kindness and hospitality. The food and drinks are some of the best the city has to offer. Not to mention the party itself is unparalleled. For me ? A night out not spent at CG is a night wasted in my honest opinion
Cozy and cool place right off the High Line. We came right after it opened and the bartender was very welcoming. Good selection of beers and while we didnt grab a bite to eat the menu looked great. They have a couple of big screens you can watch sports. Highly recommend!
I saw a review that said the staff is friendly, and this notably must not apply to the bouncers. I was unaware of the age rule on weekends and was spoken to with a tone as if I was genuine scum of the earth, practically thrown out of line after waiting 30 minutes. I’m sadly three weeks away from turning 23 - I think I’ll have developed the wisdom at that point to never attend a horrible bar like this again.
The staff is phony and management is awful. Went there with friends during an afternoon to get drinks. The bill was about $130. Gave her $100 cash and paid 60 with card. She took about $40 in tip from the cash and $20 from the card with an included gratuity...what a joke. I dont mind tipping when it comes from my own decision making. Not when someone just grabs a handful and decides for themselves. Called a manager to get things cleared up but all she had to say is we dont want your dirty money anyway...Love being taken care of and understood! Id spend my money elsewhere if i were you.
I had a great time eating at this restaurant. We staff was very attentive and friendly. The drinks we ordered were unique and delicious yet strong which is always a plus. The food was great especially the chicken sliders. The menu had alot of vegetarian options too which my friends were happy about. As we were leaving, the was a line forming outside which seems like they have a party into late night. Would definitely come back to check that out next time. The decor is beautiful as well with lots of natural light and plants all around. Highly recommend.
Visited this place with two friends who are visiting from abroad and we all loved it!! The attention from the staff was rediculously great! They were beyond attentive, fun and cool. Even when the place got packed, they were on point with the service. The food was delicious! The chicken fingers were hands on THE BEST chicken fingers Ive had! We drank a pitcher of Sangria and for the price, it was delicious not to mention the freaking huge pitcher; talk about getting your moneys worth. the music was awesome, the mood was great, the crowd was nice.. definitely going back.
I arrived at Common Ground around 6:30pm and just came out of work and wanted a quick bite/drink. I asked the manager if there was a spot for me and was told there was a 1 hour wait time to sit inside or I could be sat outside on the white round tables. I chose to sit outside because I knew I wouldn’t be there very long. I was handed a menu and waited nearly 15 minutes for someone to come and take my order. If I did not wave down the manager, I don’t think anyone would have came over to take my order. I also noticed a few servers on their phones right at the entrance while I was waiting to be helped.I ordered a glass of wine and that took even longer to get to me. At that point I was preparing to leave when a different server asked me for my drink order when I already placed it. A few moments later I was told by the server that she could sit me inside. When I was seated I noticed it wasn’t busy at all and there were PLENTY of empty tables and was wondering why I was sat outside in the first place. All I wanted was a quick bite and a drink after a long day at work and I lost my appetite after waiting so long for a simple glass of wine that wasn’t even filled half way.I was at Common Ground a few weeks ago for my friends birthday and had a great time with friends but I’m not sure what happened today. It seemed like the manager did not want to seat me from the moment I arrived.I was treated very poorly and will not come back here.
Nice bar but with really bad service. We asked for a pitcher of margaritas and the waitress asked what tequila. I asked what do you have? And she answered Dont you know what tequilas all the bars have?Three of our water glasses had chipped rims so we pointed them out and the manager rolled her eyes and said she would send over a round of shots. Even after asking a couple of times the shots never came.Too many better bars in the neighborhood and will never come back.
We were walking by and just decided to hop in for cocktails. And it turned out to be the most undrinkable drinks. Maybe they had a bad day, but man. It was traumatically bad cocktails. We just paid the bill and bolted, they were actually really nice and apologetic about it and wanted to make us new ones. But it was game over for us.
Had my sisters birthday and she paid for a group including me. I was running about 20min late from the hospital and was told it was a $300 cover. She talked to the manager who was not willing to letme in. Needless to say she wasn’t happy on her birthday and I had to rush there for no reason. What a waste.
Ive had multiple corporate events for my company at this venue on Thursday during Happy Hour. I cant think of a more perfect place in the Meatpacking District. Adam, Lauren, Kendall and Mimi are all wonderful to work with. The atmosphere and vibes and great!! Classy and sophisticated crowd. Great lighting (not super dark like some other bars in the area, large open layout space on one floor), several TVs to watch the games, nice music - not loud so you can actually have a conversation and not talk over each other). Ive had all my events so far on the stage (in the back by the large TV) and you end up having the whole area to yourself! The Happy Hour deal is AMAZING! $5-7 drinks?! Ill take it! The food platters are also exceptional for a large group. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!
The Common Ground Bar is a beautiful place, and very romantic with all the greenery, vines and candles. We didn’t order food, just drinks. The bartender was friendly and quick with the orders. The only downfall was that it was HOT inside. There definitely needed to be some fans or something because there wasn’t any air flow. The staff was great with passing out water so I’m sure they agreed with it being too hot inside.
The lady with the blonde hair and tattoos outside was so rude to my friends and me - she overcharged us cover. She charged my white friends barely any money to get in and tried to charge me and my black friend HUNDREDS of dollars to get in. Can’t help but feel that this was racially motivated and I will NEVER be coming back to this establishment.
Overall the venue is amazing. A great location for events. The service however is TERRIBLE. I usually dont write any reviews because I also work in the hospitality industry, but sorry (not sorry)... the bartenders need to work on their characters. Attitudes need to be left at home, a drink menu should be offered so the customers know what the deals are. Dont just blow out the same number for every drink. Some people know the value of the things they consume. Im nice enough to tip, but if this keeps happening... I probably wont. This place has a load of potential and I love the energy the events bring. A few more smiles need to be added. Trust me, I know it can be stressful. Just be a little more polite and welcoming.
Came here because I walked buy and wanted a couple drinks. Place was ok for the most part. The service and the drinks are good. They have 4 bathrooms so there wasn’t a wait or a line. The only issue I had was the music was extremely loud. You had to speak at the top of your lungs when talking to the people next to you. For the most part I liked the place and would potentially go again if I was near that specific area.
Worst experience ever, refused service even though we were all quite sober, head of security giving us vague reasons for refusal. Insanely white, white manager as well. Dont expect to receive any kind of service if you arent white. Lost about 15 customers in one night never going back.
This is the place where you have to check the receipt. I visited around 6 p.m. on August 29th, and the overcharged amount is $90. I paid in cash, got in a taxi, and calculated the price of the food, and the amount paid for the food was doubled. The waiters are not very kind, either. I made it uncomfortable and forced to drink continuously. If you visit the bar, we recommend that you take a closer look at the receipt before payment.
Just left there and literally ruined our first date night out since covid began. Told we would have an hour to eat, but the waitress only gave us our appetizers and didn’t come back for 40 minutes after I waived her down. 10 minutes later we were asked to leave even though our main food hadn’t even arrived. Being the only Black couple there, it was humiliating, degrading and frustrating experience. Ppl all around us was there 10x longer without a single issue. After speaking with the manager, he laughed in our face and totally diminished our experience further more. We are people and the least that could’ve been done was think like a person with a damn soul. Literally the worst night of my entire life.
Drinks were great, the spicy margarita was awesome, reasonably priced for the area. we ordered food but upon ordering were told only about half the menu was actually available and then when our food did come out, it was different than what the menu had said. service was okay. definitely better than bar than restaurant. very cool interior.
Its OK. While its one of the more chill places in the area, it doesnt quite get it right. They have 2 TVs at the bar and a large projector screen so youd think it would be a great place to watch a game. But there must not be any sports fans in the house because theyll play Red Zone over a live game 🤔. Drinks are fine and service was really good but overall this place is just OK. You wont have a horrible experience but you wont have a great one.
I had the most amazing time here. During the day I brought my parents for lunch and they loved the food, and they are picky eaters. Later that night I came with my friends and we had the time of our life. Full Send. Perfect place for a Hinge/Raya date too, the decor is very trendy. Excellent service.
Best part of the bar was the environment. Cool music and very quirky seating and decor. The waitress was too pushy in trying to upsell food and I just wanted a drink. Kept being overly attentive. We ordered just before happy hour but ended up paying within it but all drinks were full price. Very expensive.
It looks like nothing on the outside, but as soon as you step in, WOWED! I think they do that on purpose lol. The ambiance and decor alone is satisfying. Staff was cool and friendly, maybe brush up on the knowledge of wine selection available (not a harsh judgement, just helpful is all). Food was tasty! My drinks were awesome. We came to see a music performance, excellent setup for it. I recommend this place, it’s upscale but people really come to unwind and have fun.
I very rarely am able to make it to NYC, but when I do I always try out new somewhere new, as you always should. I heard about this place from a few of my friends and they did NOT disappoint. The atmosphere was inviting and the staff were all super friendly. Particularly Brandon. He was able to show my friends and I the ropes of The Concrete Jungle! Food and drinks were reasonably priced and I shall be back sooner than later!
We were looking for a spot to catch the World Cup Soccer game after a walk on the Highline. . I did a quick search for bars and pubs in the area and nothing showed up. We decided to walk toward the Metro and see if we passed by anyplace showing the game. Fortunately about a half block away we say a sign advertising they were showing the World Cup game. We went inside and it was fairly crowded with only a few seats available. Fortunately some people offered their table as there were about ready to leave. We had some drinks and an appetizer and enjoyed the game. There were plenty of televisions and a fun crowd. The service was great.
I went there for a speed dating event on a Sunday evening. So obviously this is a spacious place that can accommodate many people. I mean wow, if you remember what the meat packing area was like 20 years ago, now this is like being in heaven. The bartenders were very attentive and friendly. One of them was a real pro, I could tell by how he behaved including opening a beer bottle with a $1 lighter, haha. They serve tacos and quesadillas. I didnt try them but they looked good.
Went with a group of coworkers and spent a few hours there. Nice setting, especially since it wasnt crowded on a rainy night. However, they dont provide the daily specials (like Thursday ladies night after 7pm) unless you specifically ask them to apply the offer, so I paid full price for a round before I realized that.
I came to the bar with friends. Purchased numerous beverages. And had to leave for a personal matter. No one stated stipulations of leaving. When I came back an hour later, everyone had amnesia. I explained that I simply wanted to say bye to my friends. The taller doorman made quite the scene. Exclaiming he would remember me if I was truly there. Two other men let me in, saying “wellIt’s only him.” I left less than five minutes after. Being from New York, and working as a promoter for many years, this is unfortunately not atypical behavior such venues. Good luck to them.
UPDATE:Came back a few weeks later and this place has much improved. The bartenders were attentive and quick and the club was much cleaner. Much improved. I have updated my review from 2 to 4 stars.Needs a management change. Bartenders are drunker than the guests. Ran out if room at the coat check, ran out of glass as the the bar. Bartenders were Snapchating instead of serving. Manager smelt of weed and boose. Avoid this place untill management leans to run a bar.
We made a reservation through Yelp for a small going away party (15 people). When we arrived I was told they didnt have a reservation. I pulled up my email and showed them. They promptly got the manager. The manager proceeded to tell me I was wrong and that they dont make yelp reservations. She then told me that this wasnt her problem and that I should contact Yelp.I would have been fine if she treated it like a mistake and owned the issue, but instead she was absolutely rude and placed the blame fully on me even though I had a confirmation.DO NOT RECOMMEND. HORRIBLE SERVICE.We took our party of 15 elsewhere.
What started as a chilled indie-rock bar at 6:30 pm slowly got busier and by 10 pm had morphed into something more like a club party. The menu seemed mostly Mexican with tacos and quesadillas but with their own gourmet-sy takes on the recipes. The clients wore slacks and button-downs and seemed to be coming from after a day in the office downtown.
Very low class place. Mostly empty, occasionally pretend like they’re a “cool” bar and extort college kids for extra money to get the in. As a 30 year old professional who works in the area it’s seen as the dump joint in the area. Good for underage college kids who can’t get in other places.
Had a few drinks with friends. All, and I mean ALL Of us had headaches the next day , thats because they served us bad wine, and a really sh***y prosecco, seriously!! i cant believe they get away with it.You can have better time and definitely BETTER drinks at the iris pub around the corner.Management have no clue they are in hospitality. This place will close soon.. Its operated by clowns 🤡
AWFUL service. Was spoken rudely to by the bartenders and employees for no reason. Then I was told the bar lost my credit card when I tried to close my tab. They do not have enough people working and you can hardly get a drink. Awful management, awful service, awful place. If you want to experience a NY bar, this is not the place.
After living in NYC for 9 years, I have never experienced such anti-gay discrimination. The manager physically threw me on the ground, while the security staff laughed. This manager was drunk, smoking, and boasting, as I sat in a puddle pleading to grab my belongings and peacefully leave. I was (of course) granted the right to leave after calling the NYPD, afraid for my safety.
Clean restaurant, but poor bar service as customers wait long periods of time for a drink, loud music so you cant hear your friends or the bartender, no sign indicating the name of the establishment, so we passed it multiple times before recognizing this was the location.
This bar coat checked my and my friends belongings without our knowledge when I went to the bathroom. When we retrieved it, my phone was missing as was a credit card from my wallet. Several fraudulent charges were charged to my and my friend’s credit card the next morning, and when we were able to locate the phone in Harlem the person with it said “we gave it to them” which is obviously untrue. This bar may well have been complicit in the theft and we are pursuing police action

2021-09-22If you’re looking for somewhere to get a nice drink or have friends and want to drink and have finger foods this is the place for you. This is more of a drink and have fun or drink and catch up type of setting. The inside is very elegant, if they had a dinner menu it would go well with the inside decor. Honestly experience and food were great. The whiskey sours for happy hour were great. The portions of the foods are perfect for the prices especially in the meat packing district. I wish they had shrimp tacos that would be a great addition to the menu. No complaints here, everything was up to par.

2022-06-28I enjoyed my time there. I loved the scenery and the atmosphere combined with the music, it was amazing. The only thing I didnt like was the variety in drink. I love me a fruity drink and there wasnt one. I had got a white peach drink but I mostly just tasted alcohol. The ratio wasnt balanced.

2022-05-06Welcome to Mexican Hooters with tacos. Hostess was either deaf or dumb. Asked her 4x if there was room at the bar and she just looked at me no verbal response. 4x!! And then I said slowly and she said let me check. And came back with a male manager. Who came with an attitude at first. Then asked whats the problem said we just want to know if there is room at the bar to have drinks. He then changed to completely nice and helpful. Sat down to an empty bar. Very nice then we got the backup bartender cause the skilled bartender was with busy with the promotions girls who offered free drinks to us then never gave us any and gave them to everyone else around us. Very weird atmosphere. Very nice backup bartender tho. Only one who was attentive to us.

2022-08-01I hosted an event here and it was absolutely fantastic. The staff was so helpful and on top of everything. My group loved the setting, food and cocktails. Also they were very accommodating to our needs, we used the projection screen and drink tickets for the bar. Can’t wait to do another event here!

2022-09-16Came here for my friends birthday and had an absolute blast. The reviews we have seen online say that we as people of color would not be let in, but they have obviously been targeted and are being misrepresented. The staff was friendly and accommodating. We all can’t wait to go back!

2022-05-17Arrived at 11pm on a Friday night after dinner next doors We were standing in the non- table line for 30m and they ignored us until we committed to paying $300 of minimum spend at the bar. People were waiting behind us and bailed cause it was just so long.If you know what you are getting yourself into then this can definitely be a fun place, but be prepared to spend a lot and be charged for ice!

2021-07-27Had a decent experience at Common Ground Sunday afternoon. Despite not having many of the beers they listed on their menu, the food was good. I would come back for another chicken sandwich if I were in the area.

2022-09-04One of the only true great bars in Meatpacking! Their bartenders mix great cocktails, they have an expansive outdoor space that can easily fit large groups, and then their food menus is delicious to boot. The physicality of the bar is very spacious and open, so also great to spread out and enjoy yourself. Plus the best looking people in NYC go there at night, so you can never go wrong!

2022-09-06It’s interesting to see the owner only responding to good reviews and not acknowledging the poor ones. I’ve come to this bar twice. Both times i had the same issue with the bouncer. I am white but I came with a group of my black friends +one other white girl. Bouncer was willing to let me and my white friend in but told my friends we were at capacity. Once bouncer realized we were a group, he tried to charge us $600 to get in. It’s not that I didn’t have the money but it’s the principal. Why were you willing to let 2 white girls in and not the 3 black girls that were with us? The group of white girls before us and after us had no issue, he barely checked IDs. All of these comments saying that the bar is great and people are coming from TikTok is inaccurate. Poor reviews date back months before the video was posted. Instead of trying to save face for a bar that literally doesn’t care about you, try listening to people of color when they say they are experiencing racism at a venue instead of sweeping it under the rug. Shame on everyone involved honestly. I’m glad that girl bought it to light and people are finally talking about it. Maybe reflect on your management practices.

2022-07-07Amazing place. Family at this point - run by a great crew and always a good time. Can’t recommend a visit more! Go during the day time to ensure you don’t wait in the long weekend lines.
