Read about this restaurants second branch about to open on 72nd st between central park and Columbus Ave. I have always seen an original one packed during brunch hours. But after reading about farm to table concept, and how they create their menu, we decided to give it a try. Lettuce wrap was absolutely delicious . I had bean burger which was hot (not spicy hot), and so tasty. My husband had rice bowl. Portions are generous, or it was just us but we were so stuffed that we could not finish it, dessert looked so tempting,I wish I had room for it. I will have to come back here for brunch.
Incredible food and drink! I happened upon Community Food & Juice while I strolled Manhattan looking for a place for breakfast. The French toast was delectable, and I paired it with a gorgeous hot buttered rum which I wish I had the recipe for. Sitting outside and sipping on that while watching the world go by was a great life choice for me to experience NYC traveling solo. Also not to be understated, the staff is top notch attentive, knowledgeable and kind!
Everything was wonderful! The coffee was smooth and perked us right up. We were very pleased with our meals: the Tofu Scramble and the Huevos Racheros. Homemade hot sauce was a lovely addition to both dishes. The staff was pleasant and attentive and the environment was energetic and clean. Ill definitely be back!
The food was good but the waiter that served me was notably bad in his service. I sat on the outside patio for a late afternoon meal and wanted to work on my laptop while I continue ordering food along the night. The waiter passive aggressively nudged me to leave multiple times when I paid the money to have multiple dishes and drink while doing some work on my laptop. In the most unusual and outrageous of situations, the waiter walked up to me as I was sitting with the laptop and trying to pay for something on a website. The waiter grabbed my debit card that I was trying to make a payment on the laptop with (without asking me if I was paying) and proceeded to attempt to cash me out.All this happened without me initiating payment nor giving permission for him to take my card for payment. I asked the waiter if he was in a hurry for something. He tells me that there is one table open and I ordered something so I am fine. Basically insinuating that I am taking too long to finish my then half-eaten chickpea bowl. Before this I have also ordered a veggie sandwich and a cappucino. In all my time visiting any restaurants and cafes, I have never been treated with so much disrespect and passive aggressiveness. The fact that he took my debit card without asking for permission is highly unusual. His tone and mannerism was hostile and passive aggressive. I was never served for any water refill the entire time. Towards the end when I cashed out, I decided not to make a scene because I would have complained to management about his behavior. I gave him a small tip (I should have given him none) and he walked away rudely without saying a word.I was deeply humiliated by his behavior towards me in front of other patrons. I felt like I did not belong there and that I was deemed unworthy of sitting there as a paying customer. As I have done many times, I have sat at a nice cafe and was allowed to work on my laptop while ordering food continuously with no problem or pressure from the server. This incident stood out very much amongst my experience as an extreme outlier. I expected to be able to relax and work on my laptop instead of being treated like a lowlife.I hope management will treat this incident seriously and take steps to train their staff properly to ensure a respectful and enjoyable experience for their well meaning patrons.
Quality food and drinks. The atmosphere was clean and inviting. The service was good. The Tuna tataki was great! I also liked Buttered hot apple cider. They have outdoor seating available. I would like to come back for their breakfast. Highly recommended.I went back for lunch. Great food! We ordered Salmon scramble eggs, biscuit, apple ginger soda, they were all tasted great!
I was visiting a friend in the area and she took me to Community.Very delicious food, great ingredients, and tasty dessert. A nice spot near Columbia University and Riverside Park. Now, the tables were set up community style, so there will be people sitting next to you. It did feel a little crowded at times because the tables behind us were quite close.Overall nice little spot.
Ah- when was the last time I had such a proper salmon breakfast. The fish was moist, tender, and appropriately seasoned. Fried caper which came on top of green salad was a delightful surprise. Our server, whose name was Karen was the best server I’ve ever met, let’s say, for the past six months. She was attentive, joyful, and detail-oriented.
My favorite breakfast restaurant in Manhattan. They’re located Columbia University ‘s neighborhood. Blueberry pancakes are awesome! Especially maple syrup butter is excellent! Omelette is also fine. Most male staffs are very handsome, but skills are depending on person.
Great quality and reasonably priced brunch and coffee spot on the Upper West Side with good vegetarian options and excellent service. Sometimes crowded, but I have never had to wait too long for a table if at all. The huevos rancheros with tofu scramble instead of eggs are my favorite. All eggs can be substituted with tofu scramble if you desire. There are free refills on the coffee and the coffee is extremely good. The jam, biscuits, and hash browns are also excellent.Edit:Finally tried this place for dinner. Macaroni and cheese and tomato soup were satisfying and tasty. My fiancée enjoyed the salmon bowl very much. The place was not as crowded for dinner as it is for brunch , but there still were no outdoor seats available. Overall this is a good place to go for dinner , but even better for brunch.
Server was not attentive I expecting a great experience since its my first time but that was not the case I basically had to interpret the menu on my own. The food wasnt good at all. Very bland with no flavor my friend ate his but didnt enjoy maybe we give it another chance and try something else on the menu
This place was pretty good. Im pretty sure the waiter got my order wrong (ordered farmers omelette or something to that effect..veggie omelette, and received ham n eggs), but I ate it anyway, and it was still tasty. hash browns incorporate shredded carrots, which is strange, but tastes good. Coffee was surprisingly good, and you get a decent amount. Prices are a bit high, but I think thats just the covid tax, and the area (right near Columbia, filled with students). I would definitely come here for breakfast again.
I love this place. I’ve eaten here like 4 times in the last few months. It’s now a go to for breakfast and lunch. I’ve had a different meal each time and everything has been delicious, including drinks and dessert. The staff are friendly. I love the atmosphere and option for outdoor seating.
Comfortable with a rustic flair. The menu has a broad variety of options that will satisfy the vegetarians and carnivores in your group. I enjoyed the artisan sourdough with sweet garlic spread and a local draft. Service was prompt and friendly.Looking for the best Seinfeld fan experience? Skip the standard diner fare across the street, ask for a window seat and then enjoy a great mea with the view you remember from TV.
The food isn’t the best. If your coming for the food I believe you’ll be disappointed. If you’re coming for vibes, you’ll be alright. If you’re looking to enjoy basic cup of a 5 dollars coffee this is your spot. Community more about community I think then the food they serve.
One of my favorite episodes of No Reservations is when Anthony Bourdain and his wife, Ottavia, head to her Italian homeland, the island of Sardinia. It was one of those episodes where I wanted to crawl into the TV and join the family lunches, dinners, and everything in-between.
A great place for breakfast! We were staying in Chelsea but came up to the Columbia University area to check out the campus and decided to go here for breakfast--definitely worth the train ride. We were seated quickly and helped by our attentive waiter. The host was checking everyones vaccination cards (we opted to sit inside). All of our meals were delivered promptly and correctly and the coffee was amazing. The quality of the food was really good and we liked the modern, inviting ambience.
Terrible, terrible service, felt racially discriminated by a server. The man seemed to be a manager or some sort. Friend and I sat in the only empty table available, which happened to be a table for 3. We sat and waited about 5 minutes to be served. A moment later the table behind us opened up, happened to be a table for 2. The guy came up, didnt even ask us if we want water, and proceeded to just point us to the table for two -- basically telling us to move. This already made us uncomfortable but we just sat there, waiting for him to come back. We had tons of stuff with us and there happened to be no one waiting to be seated, so we were going to ask nicely if we could just stay in our seat until a party for 3 arrives.Guy comes back, asks us if were not going to move. He was already extremely rude, so we just said no. Then he decides to just plain up move one of our tables and asks if he can also take the chair which had all our stuff on it. We asked if we could keep it until someone arrives, and also if we could get some water. He just says okay, then leaves. He immediately goes to a different table asking if everythings fine in the most polite manner. And he never comes back with anything. To add to that, we were the only Asians seated in the vicinity. Maybe just a coincidence, but who knows. We ended up not ordering and just left.Community was one of my favorite restaurants in the neighborhood - I used to dine there multiple times. VERY unlikely to return after this terrible experience.
Visited the place for brunch. I took us about 35min to be seated. The food is great, particularly the pancakes. We also had eggs Benedict and a salmon omelette. My only complaint was that the salad that came with my plate was already seasoned, which is something I don’t like. Nevertheless, a good spot for brunch. Prices a little on the high side, but consistent with quality.
If I could give 0 stars I would. Our party of 4 arrived for breakfast and waited for 20 minutes before we could get our waitperson’s attention. His first words were “Calm down”. The rest of the conversation wasn’t much better so we left. My advice to management is be careful who represents you. This fellow is just bad advertising.
Nice place on the UWS. I was informed that place gets packed after a certain time time of the day and I can see why. I had the special, waffles with pear, pecans and syrup and it was great. The taste of the soft waffles had a hint of ginger. The sunshine juice consisting of carrots, lime and orange was great. Top service and a great place for breakfast/brunch!
Ive only gone for their brunch, but each time I was impressed. Food has a clean and crisp sort of flavor to it. It just tastes like everything is made with fresh, high quality ingredients. Popular spot, expect a decent wait time if being seated on a weekend. Tables are small. Plates and cups need to be placed strategically if youre getting more than just a entrée by itself. If thats something that was bothering you, youll stop caring once you actually start eating. 5 stars.
I usually bring friends from out of town to enjoy brunch here. The prices are slightly too decadent to make it a staple of my day to day life (although brunch in Manhattan is hard to come by for much less). I usually go for the blueberry pancakes or the french toast and they are great! Atmosphere is also pretty relaxed and cozy for such a busy place. The wait time during weekends gets pretty intense.
Awesome food, but the price and pretentiousness is often too much for my taste and keeps this spot with great potential from the 4-5 star range of my scale. Brunch is very popular so come early and prepared if that’s what tickles your fancy. Would definitely recommend stopping by and seeing how it fits you.
Great food! You are going to love the French toast. I get excited every time we even think of going. The menu is varied so everyone will find something they enjoy. My favorite time to visit is brunch, and this place is famous for their amazing pancakes! Ive tried at least half the menu and you cant really go wrong with any option.
Amazing for brunch, even though you will have to wait. Does not take reservations and will give away your spot if you dont immediately reply. Ive never tasted eggs so fresh and I dream about their carrot hash browns. That said, dont come here for anything other than brunch unless you are a hardcore health nut and a bowl of beats is something you consider a meal.
Food was great! You can taste the quality of the ingredients (especially in the fruit bowl), and just about everything on the breakfast menu is quality.Had a weird experience with my server though. I dont think she stood by my table for 5 consecutive seconds at any given time. She was even walking away as I was telling her my order.I dont really care about these kinds of things generally - as long as you take my order and refill my water, were good. But it was extremely off-putting, like she was ignoring my existence. Really strange.
I came here for brunch on a Saturday morning. The wait was not that long, only 10 minutes for 2 people. However, I didnt like the seating situation where youre placed in between parties at a communal table. I ordered the country farm plate which came with 2 eggs, ham steak, carrot hash browns, and a whole wheat biscuit. The food was fresh and tasty. The biscuit was surprisingly good for whole wheat. It was a decent place for brunch but Im not a big fan of cramped seating.
I liked the food a lot, my order (farmers plate) wasnt spectacular... It was decently cooked but no out of the ordinary flavors... But the food other people on the table had looked pretty spectacular and everyone was satisfied at the end of the meal. Great ambience and thanks for accommodating all 5 of us on a busy Saturday brunch time!
Brunch here is amazing. I’ve had the farmer’s plate and the toast with carrot butter (sounds weird but was sooo good), and both were delicious. Lots of good vegetarian options. Warning: only get drip coffee if you drink more than one cup. They charge $4.50 for coffee because it’s bottomless, so if you’re a one-cup wonder, get a latte or something to get your money’s worth.Delicious!!
This place is very very good-- good food, good drinks, friendly and professional service. I gave it 4 stars because the food used to be great but for some reason now its just good. For instance, the kale salad used to be so amazing that I was tempted to order another one after finishing the first... it had crisp pieces of kale mixed with other vegetables. But now its just a salad with some big green leaves and I didnt want to finish it. Similar for my entree -- I can remember savoring every bite and being disappointed when there was no more. Now its just a good dish. Anyone can have an off day but this has been my experience the last 3-4 times I ate here. Im not enough of a food critic to identify whats changed and I dont know if theres a new chef but its definitely not as good as it was.
I used to go in all the time for dinner and just went in for brunch for the first time. The food is a bit expensive but I’d say worth it. Everything is always perfectly prepared, attractively plated, tasty, and fresh. I like to eat their Korean bbq wraps but for brunch I had the country breakfast and a side of avocado. Highly recommend it!
Community is probably my favorite restaurant near Columbia university. Has a very normal menu, terrific bar, fresh everything, great baked goods, nice open space. Especially good for brunch, but dinner here is terrific. Lots of options for everyone and highly recommended.
When I went to Columbia I was truly addicted is this place for breakfast. If you live in the area, the key is to get there right when they open, because during normal breakfast hours this place is too busy. The sausage breakfast with the cranberry jelly was a very “comforting” meal I could have when I felt overwhelmed with study.Worth the wait! Please SERVE TO-GO! Change your policy and let us order TO-GO please!
I love taking my wife, friends, and family here for a dinner date, brunch, drinks—really any time! The seasonal cocktails are always on point. A choice spot for something simple like mac n’ cheese or a burger, and for a more robust farm-style dish as well. Sometimes there’s a long wait but that’s because it’s the place to be.
Dont mind the strollers and Columbia students waiting to be seated. For brunch we had about a 30 minute wait so we took the opportunity to go over to St. John The Divine Cathedral and take in the splendor. The menu is very healthy but everything is tasty. The item that most excited me was the 7 Grain Waffle with Pineapples, Coconut Whipped Cream and Coconut Shavings. It was the best waffle I ever had in life. My omelette was pretty good as well. Our waiter was really nice and more than helpful. Great place to add to your list.
Brunch and dinner at Community are really reliable and always delicious with great specials. The staff is friendly and accommodates both large and small groups last minute. During the day it is lively with students and professors and at night populated by small groups and people on dates. Also the owners daughter is celiac, so there are lots of delicious gluten free options!
Cool spot to visit, especially if you have picky eaters or folks with sensitivities. I walked in and wanted what everyone else was having. I narrowed it down to 3 selections by the time the server came, hahaha. I can see what some people have been annoyed with the noise and crowds, but honestly its about visiting during non peak times if you that bothers. Had the French Toast, but totally picked on my friends fries. Yum! Looking forward to going back!
Good food, some of the only decent breakfast near Columbia but the service is the worst. Maybe they’re terminally understaffed. You’ll hang out at the door waiting an unsatisfactory amount of time when there’s no one ahead of you and apparently no designated host. And the “communal” seating is cramped in the high-ceilinged space making it difficult to hear. The best you can do is request seating in the back and put up with the face they’ll inevitably make at the request. The only upside of the close quarters is eavesdropping on Columbia students’ First World problems.
Ive heard of great experiences at this place, but when I went I was very disappointed. My pancakes didnt taste that great and my large glass of carrot juice was filled with half pulp. I asked if the class I receive was the large one and I was so shocked $7 for a tiny glass of fresh juice that was half filled with pulp. When the manager came to me all she did was discount it to a small cup for $5. I will never return to Community again.
A nice option in the Columbia neighborhood. The food is solid if a bit pricey, and there are always good healthy options. The communal seating can be a bit of a drag, and the more so since the space is really very noisy. But very. So you and your meal partner, and the people crowded next to you, are all shouting and cant help but listen in. I go only when I can choose an off hour. At a time like that, I enjoy myself there.
Delicious dishes with significant portions. Their brunch menu really catches your eye and is a great deal for a casual or nice meal. Friendly service makes it worth visiting. Some seating is close together so expect to share slave with your neighbor but even then you dont feel like any space is being invaded.
This place appears to be completely overrated. The scallops were tasty and well grilled, but everything else was too greasy, fatty, or buttery.Ambiance? Way too effing noisy. And who wants to sit next to someone you have never met who either hasnt bathed or is wearing too much cologne.
Its good food, friendly people, Im not into the community table thing, and its loud, like soooo loud, but thats just the architecture. So if you want good, fresh, well prepared comfort food this is a great place. If you also enjoy the ambiance of an airport cafeteria then double plus good, but even if thats not your thing its still great, highly recommend
Great casual place with tasty food and great service. The people here are lovely and have a great smile. I came here on a Saturday lunchtime with a friend. We waited only 5 min, got to sit on the communal table and still had plenty of space. We were close to the window so had great light. Will come back!
Community is my go to place. The food is consistently good, fresh and economical. The waitstaff is knowledgeable and friendly. Super convenient, just blocks from the #1 train stops at 110th or 116th Street. Please note, they close every day around 4PM to prepare for the dinner rush. Bummer when you need a Community fix at 4:15!
Good food (especially the burger) but not only do they they charge $2 to swap out the fries for a salad (ridiculous), but its also very deceptive of them to not make that clear when you are ordering. The wait staff do not tell you and when you confront them later, they claim its clear on the menu. Its NOT.
Went here today for breakfast, was here about a year ago for dinner. Two comments. First, its a GREAT choice for couples where one eats really healthy and the other likes things like burgers. Second, its really just pretty high quality, food wise. Nothing special, but quite a winner if youre in the neighborhood.Oh and by the way... pancakes were QUITE good. Almost to the level of Clinton Street baking co.
My favorite brunch in New York, and Id like to think Im a pretty tough cookie! The freshness of the ingredients and the creative combinations. They come together with such warmth and coziness. Youll know it as soon as youre inside and smell the biscuits - youre in for some good stuff.
Community Food & Juice lives up to its name -- its a locale that blends in nicely with the surrounding community of Morningside Heights. The decor and setting makes for a very relaxed environment. The wait times to be seated are a tad on the longer side, but that only speaks to the restaurants popularity. The brunch at Community has always been a staple of locals diets, and the French Toast (along with the rest of the breakfast menu, really) is especially delicious. The only drawbacks stem from the somewhat high prices for smallish portions, but the food quality is always high.
This place looks really nice, and from this reviews, Im sure you might be convinced. I am a Columbia student and have a warning for you. My spanish teacher got food poisoning from a fish sandwich he had there, and his 2 colleagues (who also had the same thing) were hospitalized for two days. When he told me about this, I brushed it off as an isolated incident, but not after yesterday. One of my closest friends went there with her family and shortly after dinner, spent the rest of the night sick. I went once and had the veggie burger and didnt get as sick as others, but it certainly did not sit well with me, if you know what I mean. This restaurant now has a grade pending, and Im sure this is no coincidence. To whoever is reading this, take this as your warning. DO NOT BE SURPRISED IF YOU GET FOOD POISONING FROM EATING HERE. STAY AWAY STAY AWAY STAY AWAY. There are plenty of other nice places in the neighborhood to eat. Totally not worth it.
Come here for lunch or dinner. Breakfast/brunch is a lovely setting but the food is questionable. The applewood sausage is inedible—really. Potato pancakes burned, eggs runny, pancakes so dry no amount of syrup could save them. Our group all left much of their food in the plate. Had to send the coffee back due to curdled milk!Wonderful setting but come later on the day.
I am blind and while I have no complaints about the food or the wine I do have serious reservations, no pun intended about the service skills of Rebecca! As a blind person, I found her less than helpful and understanding and I was actually going to give this place a five star review until having dealt with her more extensively; this server needs re-training or possibly needs to find employment in a field that does not require interaction with the disabled! I will not be returning to this restaurant. Just to give a hint about what I am basing my opinion on, the person that seat at me took my site cane and I was sitting after paying and tipping very well, by the way for several minutes before Rebecca even noticed that I was sitting there and was extremely in different when she passed in my cane and seemed to be grudgingly offer assistance to lead me out of the restaurant. After leaving a very generous tip, I don’t expect that kind of negligent treatment in a restaurant where I spent including tip close to $70 just for myself. I doubt the people who run this restaurant read these reviews but they should really do something about this Rebecca person. If her snooty and condescending attitude is typical of this restaurant, they should close up shop immediately and spare the area any further grief! Food is also overpriced for what you get.
This is a great local spot. Highly recommend for those who are conscious about organic, free range, and local foods. Even if you arent, it is still a great find. If you are really committed, you can go for their incredible brunch but watch out for the many Columbia students fighting for a seat.
Almost always a line with 15+ min wait time during peak times- lunch, brunch, dinner. Food is clean tasting and made with very fresh ingredients. The Chocolate chunk pancakes are delicious and extremely rich/filling (hint: one order can easily feed 2 guests). For lunch, the grilled fish sandwich is a tasty choice and currently comes with beet chips that are addictive. NOTE: Pepsi, coke and commercial sodas are not served here. They have natural/organic sodas and a vast selection of freshly squeezed juices.
They have the rudest waitress I have ever seen. She didnt like the tip which we gave and called her boss (also the manager of the restaurant). They tried to convince us to give more tip which was extremely rude and inappropriate. I dont think I will go to Community again, it was a huge disappointment for us.
Healthier and hearty breakfast and lunch option. The earl grey infused vodka cocktail is nuanced and the carrot hashbrowns are a clever twist on the original breakfast side. The restaurant is always clean, warm, and has great service; the food is hearty and wholesome.
Do you want to pay $12 for orange juice? Do you want to be sat family style with strangers for no discernible reason? Then by all means come to this place.Btw vegans, the one vegan item on the menu is a completely flavorless tofu scramble that you should make for yourself at home.
Burger that cost extra to just be a regular burger. 2 selections of beer on draft that tastes terrible, and they sit their fries in an obnoxiously high container, such that you have to lift your arm up and over every time to grab a fry. This place is nothing but annoying in all senses of the word with no taste to justify it. They literally charge a dollar for just lettuce and another dollar for tomato on their burger, so its that or eat a burger which is comprised of just Bun, Cheese, and a meager amount of onion for $15 (plus fries), its just insane.
I rarely take one bite, pay, then leave. I got the chicken tacos (normally a safe bet), realized the chicken meat looked strange (grey and beef like), asked the server if there was a mistake (she replied thats chicken), so I took a bite... it was disgusting (really hard to describe the taste, the texture was rubbery). I asked for the check, paid, left, and have never gone back. I still shudder to think what that strange mystery meat was I consumed
Oh, my Sweet & Sara toasted coconut marshmallows, how do I love thee? Whenever Im in Whole Foods, I simply must pick up a box, even though the price makes my hair stand up a little each time ($6.99 for 12 pieces, although I know you can get them cheaper online). But oh boy, do they make me happy. Their soft, melty, divine, marshmallowy goodness is like desert therapy. I just cant live without them.

2022-06-01I really enjoyed the food, the vibe and the drinks. Went here for a girls day out brunch. Great service, always checking to see if the customer is satisfied. Glad to know its still going strong.

2022-04-21Went here for lunch on 4-20-22 at 11:45. The restaurant was busy, but there was seating to found for our group of three. We sat outside. Our server was polite and efficient. We all enjoyed our meals of pancakes with blueberries, salmon burger with sweet potato fries, and the grilled fish sandwich with fries. The food was fresh tasting and well prepared. All in all a pleasant dining experience. I’d definitely return.

2022-04-29Nice place to catch up with a friend. We had a cozy seat by the window. We had the salmon and PEI mussels and both enjoyed our entrees. Drinks were good and they had a few draft beers. Service was solid and they did not rush us at all. I hear great things about brunch but have yet to try it. We may have to go back!

2021-08-22I had a good brunch here! The servers were very nice and the vibe was pretty good too. I got the beef burger and it was delicious. The burger also came with a lot of fries so you definitely get your moneys worth.
