It seems unfair to give only three stars because I loved the atmosphere and loved my food and drink. The service was good, too, if rushed. BUT, they tacked a 20% tip onto the bill and we were late for a play so didnt have time to object. They also used a hand-held device to present the bill and sort of swept it in front of us without giving us an opportunity to examine it. My partner took it from the waitresss hand and thats how he saw the tip. She would have gotten 20% if wed been allowed to make the choice ourselves, but I do not like being shaken down, and thats what it felt like.
By the way, great place, probably. When we got there for a reservation at 6:00PM, there were about 45 people in front of us in a completely packed place. We wouldve gotten a table somewhere around 730 or 8 oclock for a 6 oclock reservation.Their on-line res system just lets people sign up with no thought of capacity.Maybe next time!
Looks like a lovely place but they accepted too many bookings. We arrived at 6pm and had booked via OpenTable, but found a queue of 12-15 other parties who had also booked at 6. The waiter was polite but said he would give us a table ‘as and when other tables leave’ which doesn’t work when you need to eat in time for a Broadway show.
We were running extremely late for our reservation and were attending a show afterwards. The manager Tom could not have been more accommodating, pleasant and dotting. When I phoned the restaurant to let them know we were going to be late, Tom told me not to worry, that he would make our dinner happen and take care of us! Every staff member was fantastic, attentive, funny and bent over backwards to get us dinner with less than an hour of us having to make it to our show. Food was delicious and loved the piano music! Da Marino is a classic NYC italian staple with a great atmosphere. Old NYC vibes. Have been here before and will definitely be returning! Thanks again Tom and staff for making our evening so awesome!! See you soon! Barb
Da Marino is da bomb! Anna, the bartender, and Tom, the manager, took such great care of us and made my wife’s birthday a special evening she’ll never forget! After having our show at the Ambassador across the street canceled at the last minute, the theater manager suggested we try Da Marino. We received the warmest welcome, magnificent martinis and the best tiramisu we’ve ever had! Anna and Tom were definitely the hosts with the most! They serenaded us with “Happy Birthday,” then Craig and his wife Anna stopped by to chat with us. We can’t wait for our next trip back to NYC so we can stop here again!
Im a routine kind of guy. I go there pretty often because Tom the manager is great and Ana the bartender is a good friend of mine. There was treat me like family. I get the same thing every time, a Caesar salad, tortellini brodo and capellini pomodoro with some fresh Parmesan on top. Hits the spot for me. Ive tried a lot of their dishes there and theyre all amazing. Its affordable and its delicious Italian food, in NYC its hard to find affordable restaurants and this is one of the affordable restaurants, and the quality is top-notch. Excellent atmosphere
Was in New York celebrating my birthday.. My waitress was arguing with me about how my drink should be made. I told her to put it in a short glass because I did not want a bunch of juice.. just a tad. She did not want to tell the bartender my request.. While I was speaking so to her reiterating my request, she got mad and walked away mid sentence. We were only Black people in the establishment and I dont know if that had anything to do with it.. but it sure felt that way! She felt customer service and my opinion did not matter. So I left and went to a bar in Hells kitchen and had a great meal.
Superb food, atmosphere and service! Came to NYC with the family for a mini vacation! Was met by the manager, Tom, who was very friendly...you can tell that he really enjoys his job. Our waiter, John, was extremely knowledgeable and friendly...he and his support staff were very attentive and they all deserved their tip and then some! The food was fantastic! I got the Pappardelle Bolognese and it was, by far, one of the best pasta dishes I have ever had! If you go to NYC, you HAVE TO GO HERE!!!
One thing is for sure, not a single person accepts being in charge, nor do they know what theyre doing, but theyll schmooze the hella outta ya!Other than old managers that are too handsy and repeat the same 2 jokes to every person that walks through the door ... The cocktails are overpriced ... The food is swimming in sauce (which I dont think would be a problem if the sauce was good)... Some dishes are decent, but all of them look like they were plated by grandma back in the 70s. Not worth the price.
There are gemsThere are diamondsAnd then there’s Da MarinoRarely am I speechless, but this establishment takes my breath away. The carbonara is from another planet. The vodka penne likewise. And do not, DO NOT, get me started on the tiramisu and cappuccino. And cannoli.Going to a show? Da Marino is a must.Hungry? Go to 220 W.49th.Want ambience? Look no further. The staff, manager, owners are straight out of Central Casting. You will leave while wanting more. On all levels.Just the perfect dining experience.I need to go back. Right now.So do you.
My husband flew me to New York City as the first stop of our honeymoon, as a surprise. I had been to Da Marinos before and had wanted to eat dinner there after finding out where we were going. We didnt have reservations but the manager was very kind and found a way to seat us. The food was amazing and the piano bar, lights, and overall mood of the restaurant was perfect for the first night of our honeymoon together. I would highly recommend this spot!
This fine restaurant is a MUST for those who love Italian cuisine. Plus the entire staff is very friendly and the service is wonderful.Aside from that, the food is delicious. 2 of us had the Lobster Ravioli, 1 had Rigatoni with meatballs and Chicken Parmigiana. Very good. Our appetizer was fresh mozzarella which I highly encourage you to order. DELICIOUSThey also made my Aunt, who was celebrating her 80th birthday feel very special as the host had the pianist play while he had the Restaurant singing Happy Birthday!Thank you, Da Marino for a wonderful end to our perfect day. 😊
Warm, wonderful staff and stunning venue however the food wasnt up to scratch. My wife ordered a ravioli dish that was a watery, buttery slop without taste. My four cheese dish was better but I wouldnt give it an average 3. Maybe theyre better at meat dishes and there were plenty of happy customers.
Awesome food and the piano bar is perfect! I had their specials and they were incredible. Only drawback (reason for 4 stars instead of 5) is because the prices for the specials were not listed on the menu. Not that it would have changed my opinion, but I didnt realize one of the appetizers was $26 until after I got the bill! Still, this is an incredible restaurant and I highly recommend it.
Excellent service! Small and quaint restaurant with an authentic Italian vibe. A piano nestled next to the bar was beautifully attended throughout the evening and the pianist not only sang, he maintained dialog with the guests and took requests. I highly recommend the dish the cocoa fettuccini.
This is one of my familys favorite places to dine when we are in NYC. They are friendly and the food is fantastic. They have a wonderful ambience that is perfect for a romantic date night or a memorable family evening. I recommend you make reservations. They serve classic Italian dishes. The food is amazing!
I own a restaraunt myself and this place was absolutely amazing. From the minute we walked in to the minute we left. The food and service was outstanding. The owner Chris and his wife Kay along with manager Tom went above and beyond to make our dining experience top notch. I even got up and sang with Tom… haha. Highly recommend visiting Chris, Kay and his lovely staff. My new favorite place in NYC, we will be back soon!
I was really excited to come to this place because I read the story of the owner online and the little downstairs restaurant looked so cute. The inside is beautiful and well done in making it feel like you’re in Italy, unfortunately the food does not feel like Italy. It is mediocre at best and I was pretty disappointed. The polenta had barely any flavor nor did my house pinot grigio. I wanted to try desert but the waitress left us with empty plates and wine glasses for over a half an hour and I had no time to order and risk another half an hour to get the check. The gentleman filling the water was amazing and very attentive and if it weren’t for hin and the beautiful ambiance I’d have given this place .5 stars. Not worth the money, I’m from Rhode Island and when I go to New York I’m expecting the best of the best, I could have gotten food three times as good for half the price in my own city. I should have eaten at Eataly.
Beautiful experience, beautiful atmosphere, and most importantly, average food.- Nothing special about the food (please keep in mind that we only tried two orders. Nice (average) Lasagna. The chocolate fettuccini is not bad. However, the fettuccini was under our expectations and doesn’t worth the price at all.- The people working here are very welcoming, friendly, and funny. Overall service was good.- The atmosphere here is beautiful! They have a pianist and you can request songs too! The have involved us in multiple songs (clapping & singing) and that was really different & beautiful, at least for me. Made all people there smiling and happy. Will visit again.(5 stars for atmosphere, 3 stars for food)
My family dined here on Christmas Eve of 2018 and had a fabulous meal with live music. Now three years later we dined here for a friend’s birthday prior to seeing a show at the theater right across the street! The food was fabulous the service was perfect and the piano player was impressive! Tommy was amazing and we enjoyed a perfect dinner here! Highly recommend.
Everything was excellent!! Came here last minute for a pre-marathon dinner (not me, one of the people I was with) and we had the best experience!! All of the food was delicious, portion sizes were good, Brittany and John were great, and Marcy the pianist/singer for the night was just the most fun!!
I stumbled into this quaint Italian restaurant with my company to find a large man playing piano table side. The food was delicious, we went with a chicken carbonara which we shared was delicious and the portion size was perfect. The waiters were attentive and friendly and I recall the service being excellent.
As an out-of-stater visiting NYC for the first time, a taste of Italian food in the City that Never Sleeps was right near the top of my bucket list. I had this place recommended to me by the family after they visited a couple of years back and I can now say without any doubts or reservations that this is the single best Italian restaurant I have EVER been to.The service was fantastic, the restaurant was brilliantly decorated and cozy, the prices are very reasonable for an upper-end restaurant right on Broadway, the food was beyond delicious, we were treated to some lovely piano music, and the manager (and singer!) Tom DAngelo gave my girlfriend and I an incredible, witty, and humourous New York welcome at the front door. Mr DAngelo runs an incredible establishment and treats everyone who walks through his doors like family.I travel a lot and I can guarantee that Ill be dining at this place every time Im in NYC.
As with many NY restaurants, it has an unassuming entrance, but once inside it looks like something Disney might do. Very wonderful atmosphere with great staff. I was looking for something with eggplant but there was nothing on the menu. When I mentioned it to the server he offered to make something and it was wonderful. Good bread, great pasta, good service.
My mother-in-law and I chose Da Marino because it looked like such a quaint Italian restaurant that we felt would be perfect for an 80th birthday dinner. The restaurant did not disappoint. The food was amazing. The ambiance was cozy and personal. The manager, Tom DAngelo, spent the entire evening ensuring that everyone had a personal experience. The piano player created an atmosphere of friendliness that included many sing-alongs, mini dancing exhibitions and the playing of maracas. Well go back again in a heartbeat.
Worst service ever. Would never recommend this place to anyone. Asked more.than 5 times for water... wife went to bar to get some after 20 minutes. Food was good but not spectacular thus the rating. We were a large party and spent a great deal unfortunately were treated like second class. There.are many other fine Italian places.in ny insigeestnthem waybefore you go here.
Tom (manager extraordinaire) took us in off the street well after the kitchen closed and allowed us to sit and have the most delicious piece of tiramisu and coffee in this enchanting restaurant. This was my third night in New York and it was what felt like my first New York experience. The piano soothed our spirit and the staff was on point in all levels. This place is a MUST!
Came here about 4 years ago, the food was AMAZING! Especially the Ravioli con Crema e Funghi. Actually went back a second time during my trip because it was so good ! I was looking for this restaurant to recommend to a friend visiting New York right now, wanted to write a review so I can easily find it for when I visit again! Hopefully soon!Great place!
Fabulous evening! We came to celebrate my in laws 59th anniversary and had a wonderful meal and live entertainment! I had the filet mignon that melted in my mouth! From the appetizers to the cheesecake everything was delicious!!! The service was excellent as well! What a memory!!!!
Went here with my husband for dinner back in 2015 after seeing an off Broadway performance. To this day I still remember the wonderful food and ambiance this place has! I always tell family and friends it’s a must whenever they visit New York! I will definitely be back… one day!
Food and atmosphere were fantastic! Staff and front house manager were very nice but were a bit too attentive. I couldn’t go 5 minutes without telling someone not to take my plate. The lice music is a great choice but based off the size of the restaurant, the acoustics do not do the restaurant justice, very difficult to hold a conversation with someone your sitting 2 feet away from.Made a reservation 45 minutes in advance and was seated right away on a busy Friday night so luck needs to be on your side unfortunately. Drinks and food were great! A bit pricey, but hey, your in New York.Definitely recommend!
One hour wait with reservation. Appetizer and salad both average to below average. Seafood main course was good. Fillet special was outstanding. Service was below average. Wine and cocktails were good, but a little expensive for what they were. Total bill for 2 was $230. One appetizer, one salad, 2 main courses, no dessert, 2 cocktails, 2 glasses of wine. With so many choices in the city, I doubt I will go back, but if you want to try, Id suggest a week night outside of the holiday season. It has the potential to be really good.
My sister, nieces, and great nieces just spent a long weekend in NYC. Went to Da Marinos for the 1st time. Celebrated my birthday. Long wait, but well worth it. While waiting we all sang along to the live music of lovely piano playing. Everyone at the bar and all waiting joined in. Amazing, warm atmosphere and Tom the manger was great. Handled impatient customers very well! I would highly recommend this restaurant. Warm, loving atmosphere- like a big family. Great food and big portions! Salute!! :)
We went before seeing a show and they were great; very tasty and were very nice even though Open Table had overbooked them. We had to wait but they got us in and fed and to our show on time. Tom the manager was incredibly nice! They held our leftovers for us to pick up after the show, had fantastic tiramisu and the lightest, fluffiest cheesecake! We will definitely go back! They had great live music as well!
Believe the bad reviews! We didnt and they ruined our dinner plans. We had a party of 4, reserved a table a week in advance at 6:15 last Saturday as we had a show to go to at 8pm next door. Multiple parties ahead of us with reservations before ours. The man handling reservations is rude, unorganized, and unprofessional. He lies to everyone waiting. We finally were offered the option to order at the bar when we were almost out of time and clearly werent getting a table. Donna at the bar was very nice but it was too little too late. The food was good but we couldnt enjoy it since we had to wolf it down and go. I wouldnt recommend this to anyone who doesnt have hours to wait while being given an attitude and listening to lies.
I was drawn to this place because there was review that said they were horrible surrounded by 5 star reviews. It peaked my interest and was near the place we were going to see a show. We decided to eat there and everything was perfect. The food , the atmosphere and even generous glass of wine. Enjoyed watching our waiter de-bone my Mediterranean sea bass. It tasted out of this world. I cant wait to go back.
Had a 5:15 Reservation and did not get seated until 6:30. There is no place to stand for those who were waiting and we had other parties with 5:30 reservations (with same party size) sat before us. Plan accordingly, especially if you have a show to get to!!! Food was good and came out very quickly (considering we ordered right away) Service was decent, our server told us mid meal her shift was up and she was giving us up to her colleague, making it a little slower..Had a very warm atmosphere and a great piano player who was involved with the crowd and played great songs.
Beware of this restaurant! Although the food was great and the server was good. We had to wait over an hour to be seated even though we had a reservation for 6pm. We had tickets for a show at 8, and did not sit down until a little after 7. We had to rush through our entrees and skip the appetizers all together. We were not the only ones to not have their reservations held. Most of the mob by the bar when you walked in were complaining of the same thing. You would think that they would’ve given a complimentary drink at the bar for having us wait an hour past our reservation but that didn’t happen. The only thing that I can say is that when it was mentioned to the waitress that we were celebrating my wife and sister in laws birthday they did bring a piece of cake over and sang without having to ask, although we had to rush that as well in order to make the show. I will not go back to this restaurant, based on the experience that I had.
Cozy and real authentic Italian feeling. Came on a Saturday night and was seated immediately by the enthusiastic manager, Tom. Our waiter was very elegant in his service and food and drink were prompt. The meal was DELICIOUS. Portion sizes are big, definitely enough to pass your plate because you will definitely want a a little taste of everything. Highly recommend the chocolate spaghetti! This is Italian at its finest.
We had a reservation for 3:45. We were seated right away and ordered a few minutes later. The place was pretty empty so we figured our food would be out quickly. Fast forward an hour later, hadnt seen our waitress anywhere, and people that came after us were getting food. I highly doubt it takes an hour to make chicken parmigiana and rigatoni with meatballs. We actually wound up leaving as we were starving and our dinner was nowhere in sight. I really was looking forward to a lovely dinner and was beyond disappointed.
Came here on New Years Eve after 9pm and had a reservation, got there a little late due to the streets being closed because of the festivities and the host was so amazing and friendly and still accommodated my wife and I. Food was delicious. Service was good and they have a live piano player. This place is always packed because of how great it is. Definitely recommend!
I’ll start off by saying our food was delicious and our server was very friendly. However the place is so crammed we had to move the table out to get in our seats, it was so claustrophobic (it’s underground, no windows), with tacky plastic electric lights everywhere. Didn’t feel like Italy. Because of how many people were jammed in, we couldn’t even hear each other around a small round table seating 3 of us. Then someone came around singing Sweet Caroline and Happy Birthday every 5 minutes. Might suit the bridge and tunnel crowd but quite a chaotic nightmare for this New Yorker.
It took one hour to get our dinner after we ordered. When the food arrived it was cold and clearly had been sitting for quite some time. When we asked our waiter how they would resolve this, they said it would be microwaved and returned. Not the realoution I expected. The food was not good. The waiter confessed the kitchen made it cold. I believe it just sat, for a while. This was our first underwhelming (bad) food experience in NYC. The piano player was truly entertaining because she did not know some of the words to the songs she sang. The crowd did know the words and that was fun. Full disclosure, the manager did take 25% off the check.
My husband and I visited Da Marino for dinner this Pat weekend. We had a great experience! I would agree with other patrons that the host was a bit coarse and the process of getting on the waiting list was sloppy but we didnt have to wait long after we figured out how the process worked. The tableside service was excellent and the food was even better. We had an eggplant appetizer, I had ravioli and my husband had the filet mignon special. Everything was delicious and the portions were the perfect size. They also had live music, which made for a great atmosphere. We will definitely visit the next time were in the city!
Food is good; however, the service is questionable. To clarify, it is not the servers faults, but the manager’s. The servers are friendly, but it’s clear they are being pressured to get people in and out as quickly as possible. They rush you through your dinner. We had the manager and the server come up twice trying to take our plates when we were clearly still working on our food, but trying to enjoy a conversation with our dinner. We should not have been rushed. Going by previous reviews, this appears to be an ongoing problem and they seriously overbook reservations - you would think they would accept feedback and work on improving their reservations process to make it a better experience. I will not be recommending this restaurant to others.
Went to Da Marino on March 10, 2019 for lunch and was a bit disappointed. My two girlfriends and I were the only ones there for about an hour and a half. We of course were not rushed and the service was good. The fish which was tasty unfortunately still had most of its scales; yuck! Not very pleasing to the palate. We decided to split the check three ways using our individual credit cards; waitress said sure no problem. However, a few days later I noticed an additional $3.85 was tacked on to my credit card and to my two friends as well; our pricey check was approximately $270. We were not aware or informed about any additional charges which was upsetting since a generous tip was left by each of us individually. This was my second time there, first experience was better. Beware of fish with scales and hidden charges!
I came here in March, pre-pandemic, with my mother and her friend group. Food was passable, decor was old-fashioned (but endearing). The place smelled a little weird, but I took it down to being below street level. Dinner was ruined by a massive cockroach climbing up the wall behind my moms chair. It was killed by staff , but I couldnt finish my dinner after the experience. I think Ill skip this place next time I come to NYC.
Reservations dont seem to mean a thing to this restaurant, they have no problem with overbooking and then waiting for people to leave out of frustration and then seating the people that are left. They tried to mitigate this by handing out free drinks to the people that were waiting. Food looked good, but we never got to eat because we never actually got seated. Maybe if the guy managing the front was more concerned with actually running the front of the house instead of taking the mike and singing to people, people might have been seated on a more timely basis.
Made reservations for this weekend during the dinner break of Angels in America (go! Its so worth the 8 hours sitting!). The atmosphere was great, service wonderful and attentive and the food- FABULOUS! I had the lobster ravioli and my guest had the gnocchi (which will be forever known as little pillows of pleasure) both wonderful. The calamari was melt in your mouth fantastic. The restaurant is in a great location for a number of theaters on Broadway. Highly recommend!
Let me first say that the food and service were great. If you’re seeing a show, the location is excellent. Unfortunately, the restaurant is extremely noisy and cramped. I happened to be seated in a high traffic area and continuously had people kicking my chair or squeezing past me as they walked by. In addition, if you’re physically challenged, be aware that the restaurant is located 4 or 5 steps below street level and can be difficult to access (fortunately there is a hand rail).
Very friendly staff, great service and loved the atmosphere. Although we went in the day time, I can only imagine what the vibe at night would be like.. amazing! Food was fantastic and flavoured well. I had the carbonara..one of the best Ive had in a restaurant, especially in America. Sauce was rich but not overbearing. Im definitely coming back next time Im in New York.
The food actually deserves better rating. Believe what you read about the crowd. Got there 445 after matinee show so seated immediately with reservation. However leaving at 615 was a nightmare. The bar has room for 15, but there were 50 people there. FDNY would not be thrilled. Could not get out of the restaurant as it made the rush hour subway seem spacious. The prices are absurd, even for NYC. Would never return at dinner time.
Superb atmosphere and welcome. Great range of Italian dishes on the menu. Despite being recommended this restaurant, the service was very poor and the food inedible. My pasta was under cooked and for the time taken between ordering and having our meals served there is no way that our pasta was cooked fresh. Our meals were clearly microwaved by the poor quality too. Highly disappointed.
Conveniently located in the theatre district. Ambiance is very warm and cozy. Murals detail the walls and ceiling. Even the bathroom is decorated in Italian mosaics and statues. Food and service were excellent. Reservations for 4:30 PM were called in Saturday for Sunday without any difficulties. We had the crab cake appetizer followed by the Branzini special for me and Chicken Francaise for my husband. Both excellent and cooked to perfection. Nice sized portions. We shared a piece of cheesecake for dessert. We could see that the wait staff tried to be accommodating to other diners who were seated at 5:00 and 5:30 pm for the 7:00 PM theatre shows. Would definitely recommend Da Marino.
This was one of the WORST experiences I have had at a restaurant, which was surprising because the restaurant had such great reviews. We arrived at DaMarino at 5:45, which was our reservation time. We signed in with the host as he struggled to find our reservation and complained about OpenTable. He was able to find our reservation and confirm for 5:45, but there were no seats available. It was incredibly cramped and everyone waiting was up against the wall with barely any room to squeeze by. Even the servers were desperately trying to get around the crowd. The host was incredibly loud, calling out reservations and directing guests to wait the whole time we were there. We were seated 20 minutes later at 6:05 to a table that was meant for 5. They added a chair to an already cramped area for the 6 of us. We ordered at 6:20. My son received his Caesar salad very quickly (which he was eating for a meal). The waiter told us that our order would be out shortly. We waited. 45 minutes, at 7:05, we inquired about our meal. He said the kitchen was backed up. We let him know that we had Broadway tickets for 8:00 as we watched the time continue to pass. One hour and five minutes after we were seated, at 7:25, we received our meal. At this point, we had to scarf down everything and even burned our mouths because we couldn’t wait for the food to cool off. We didn’t get to finish our meals and we had to leave for the show at 7:40, nearly two hours from our reservation time. We left the restaurant and arrived to the Broadway theater at 7:57. A night that was supposed to be fun and enjoyable turned out to be nothing but stress with a hefty price for a meal we could not enjoy when we planned plenty of time to visit DaMarino and make the show.
Great food, when we came in the piano was good. But by the end of our meal it turned into a Disney theme show, which was weird. They gave kids in the restaurant tambourines and maracas, which just made for a headache inducing cacophony. Not the kids faults- it was adorable, but this went on for at least 30 minutes. Not what we were hoping to eat to.Overall, we left with headaches but again, at least the food was good.
I dont know where to start. I was excited about this place based on reviews. We had to wait for over an hour even with the reservation. The place is so tight and loud. I dont mind the piano music. But they have to stop the singing. So loud. It ruins the atmosphere. You cant talk at all. As for food I ordered mushroom ravioli. 26 bucks for 6 tiny ravioli which looked more like potstickers. I had better ravioli at olive garden. Would be nice if it was served at least with a small salad. So overall it was a disappointment.
I ate here while doing some research about buying a phone during lunch one day, and I had an excellent experience. I will say that the meal I purchased was the special of the day, but in my opinion it was very fairly priced. The salad was good, the bread was great, and the lasagna was also very good. On top of all of the this, the wait staff was very friendly with me and made me feel welcome. All things considered, I will definitely go back the next time I am in the city.
I made a reservation for 6:15 in order to give plenty time to enjoy our meal before heading next door to the show. We arrived before 6:15 and was told it would be about 15 minutes until we were seated which I can accept. They obviously overbooked all the reservations. This place is so small there is nowhere to even wait beside the bar which was packed and took up more then half the width of the entrance. We were not seated until almost 7PM.. We had to rush through our expensive meal (Go the their website and you will find no prices...for good reason, if you saw them you would not go there.) A lasagna for $26?...Chicken dishes for $33.? Desert or Coffee were not even an option as we just made the show. This place is a typical tourist/show restaurant. I will never return.
The food was good, but the service was ABHORENT. We were sitting for less than an hour and a half TOTAL- drinks, dinner, coffee and dessert. The waitress dropped the check and was back in less than 5 minutes asking if we were ready, we told her we needed a few more minutes. 5 minutes later we sent our payment with the waitress and not 2 minutes later the manager came over and said “thanks for coming, but we have people waiting for this table” and after telling him we were waiting on his server to bring our change he realized what an a** he sounded like and tried to make small talk. Will NEVER eat here again. Go to Carmine’s, trust me.
Ok food but not amazing. Atmosphere was fun. Service was friendly (despite getting our orders wrong). Piano was great. Even though it is busy, care should still be taken when serving food... Im still trying to get pasta sauce out of my shirt from when the plate was plonked hard on our table!
This restaurant is mediocre at best. The bartender was unattentive. The singer was not good and way too loud for the venue. The food was ok, but nothing to brag about. The manager ran around looking miserable and swore hestressed. I swore was going to have a stroke (not one smile or one hello to anyone except to some regulars). This restaurant is definitely a one and done especially since there are so many other Italian restaurants in NYC offering so much more.
I think this restaurant is a complete tourist trap. In 50 years of dining in NYC it was the singularly worst dinner experience I have ever had. The food is mediocre and way overpriced. The server was rude and surly. I was overcharged for an appetizer and the owner neither adjusted the check nor apologized. The dungeon-like atmosphere is unappealing. The wine list is ridiculously overpriced. Hardly anything available that is decent under $50.00. The owner/chef just was sued by a former waitress for sexual harassment and a $2.5 million judgment was entered in May, 2014 against him. Watch the menu prices go even higher to cover this! Avoid this dump at all costs.
Although i am a big fan, (food atmosphere table service is spot on), there is a complete breakdown on the front end. Reservations are pointless as whoever can push there way to the dining area is picked next for a table. Reservations at 7 , seated at 815 by pushing and shoving my way to the front and slipping some cash to the manager. A Hostess at the front door taking names would not only make the wait more tolerable, and avoid a fire and code violation of bodies blocking the only exit out of a basement restaurant, it would give this place the atmosphere they are shooting for. The kitchen staff are clearly at the top of there game put effort into the entire meal , its too bad it starts with a black eye by the front end as soon as you get there.
Came to this gem on a recommendation from a friend. What a find! Great central location to all theaters. The food is amazing! We had Bronzino which was deboned tableside and eggplant parmigiana. The portions were large with perfect presentation. Our service was good and they made sure we were out in time for our 8 o’clock show. Tom, the manager, makes everyone feel right at home and the piano guy adds to the ambience. I know I’ll be back!!
The ravioli tasted like dumplings and were not to my liking. A lot of outside dough and not much mushroom inside. House salad was just ok. A little bland. My French martini was superb.I have been there several times before and had better experiences but not this time. Hope it was just a anomaly.Air conditioning is not good. We sat in a pool of sweat the entire meal.
Food was excellent. We tried a couple of the pasta dishes and he portion sizes were great. Couldn’t eat as much as we wanted since it was an early dinner before a Broadway shoe. I believe our waitress was having a bad day, although all others that were helping here seemed great.
This restaurant was a NYC favorite! First of all, you truly feel like youre in Italy from the decor at Da Marino. Its very European and has a great vibe on the inside. The waiters were very nice. I came here for my birthday before a Broadway show and loved it. I had the Chicken Parmesan and my girlfriend had the Capellini Pomodoro. Id say it was very comparable to some of the top food we have had in Italy. Definitely was one of the best Chicken Parmesans I have ever had. We got wine with dinner and they gave us a very nice amount. They brought out a cheesecake for desert which was excellent too. Definitely check this place out. Food was a bit on the pricer side is the only downside but it was worth it! Chicken Parmesan was $31.50 and Pastas were around $19-$26 so you have reference because prices arent online.
Made a reservation weeks in advance. Intentionally chose this restaurant because of its proximity to the theater where we had seen Hadestown. I have end-stage cancer and cannot get around easily. This was my last chance to enjoy a show and dinner in the city (we took the train from Albany for the day). There was no place for the wheelchair, no place for us to wait, and no one cared. I ended up waiting in a chair outside the ladies’ room with servers bumping me left and right. 45 minutes after our reservation, they still couldn’t tell us when they’d have a table for us. This is no way to treat any customer, but especially one who is dying. We left the restaurant with no dinner and Da Marino ruined our entire experience.
This was by far the best eating experience I had while in NYC! Great atmosphere, Dennis was charming and filled the restaurant with his dulcet tones and delightful melodies on the piano. With Tom seranading the patrons with Sinatra tunes, I found myself inclined to stay for hours. Dont miss this gem! Wonderful service, delicious food, and the cutest little old world Italian restaurant in New York City! Very close to Times Square!!!!
Made a reservation for Saturday at 5:15 arrived to an already busy bar and restaurant but was seated right away. service and food was great. started with the Burrata special and cold antipast. followed by wine and each of us in our party of 4 ordered a special; lamb, surf n turf, lobster ravioli and a chicken francese. Everything came out timely hot and absolutely delicious. Our server was constantly refilling our waters and asking if we needed anything although the restaurant was busy. Dessert was out of this world, The cheesecake was A M A Z I N G.As we were leaving a customer was arguing with the guy at the host stand about seating, this customer was a complete a hole, acting as if people with reservations didnt matter, and making a scene, sorry you didnt plan ahead like the rest of us did.. The manager/owner handled it very well, Will def be back next time I see a show !
I have been waiting to come since January to come to Da Marino’s at the recommendation of a friend to celebrate a massive event. We booked a week in advance and still had to wait 45 past the booking time for a table. Once we were seated the table was to small for our party so we requested to move. After much persuading, we were moved to a bigger table, settled and served wine only to be told we had to go back to our original table as the table we were on was required for a reservation.Hungry, frustrated and feeling under appreciated we left after 50 minutes without even a bit of bread
Visited on 4.45pm on Sunday and was asked to sit at the bar even though the place was empty. Tom was speaking on the phone very loudly throughout and it disturbed the dining experience. Food was so-so, ordered the Burrata (special menu) and it was hard, not the smooth silky cheesy you’re supposed to get. Ravioli had too much pasta and too little filling. $53 (excluding tips) for 2 dishes. I would spend my calories and money elsewhere.
Eating at Da Marino is all about the experience, and we loved it. Its crazy, cramped, noisy and brilliant all in one little package! From waiting to be seated in the virtually none existent corridor behind the bar, to the noise of the place (including the live music) and to the speed at which the waiters whizz around, we had a great time. We also found the food and wine to be delicious, if a little on the pricey side (but you are in the middle of Manhattan). Im sure all of the things we loved could be perceived as negatives by those of a different mindset, but if you want a dining experience rather than just good food, Id thoroughly recommend Da Marino, it really is a blast for all of your senses!
My husband & I went to dinner here after we saw The Book of Mormon across the street. Id seen the pictures, reviews and menu online before we went into the city (we live in New Jersey). It was worth the trip! The first thing you see is the wonderful atmosphere of the place, lights, furnishings, the pictures on the walls all make you feel like youre in Italy. They have a piano bar, and the Manager sings as well! Excellent entertainment, for all ages, current and oldies. Speaking of the Manager, he made us feel welcome and was funny at the same time. The staff was also excellent, attentive, fun and welcoming. And OMG the food!! It was FANTASTIC!!! From the bread with a lentil dip, to the Caprese appy, to our entrees of Penne a la Vodka, and Ziti Bologonaise, it was so delicious! My hubby almost licked the plate! It was so much better than everything weve ordered back in Hackensack, as they tend to be way too salty! Da Marinos food was fresh and absolutely cooked to perfection. We wanted dessert, and the choices looked fabulous, but we were too full. Well definitely be going back to this wonderful gem of a restaurant. Oh, and for all of the food we got, the prices were reasonable for NYC. I highly recommend it!
This place is AWESOME! Great food, very tasty, fresh and BIG portions. The staff is super friendly and efficient. An all-around terrific experience, definitely one of the best Italian restaurants in NYC. Ask to meet co-owner Craig, hes worth the price of admission alone!
This review is negative primarily reflecting on this restaurant’s management of reservation and how it treats people who have reservations - this is personal experience. Was visiting NY in mid-December with 4 other friends, stayed in midtown and we made a reservation for DaMarino’s through OpenTable. We showed up at the restaurant and first, the management said we did not have a reservation, I showed it to them through the app, after looking angry they found it and said we would be seated ‘a little late’ but they would ‘take care of us’. This sounded like they were doing us a favor (not good), we waited and they told us on numerous occasions that they were almost ready. After and hour and a half PAST OUR RESERVED TIME, we left. This place may have good food though none of the folks we talked to who left small table said they were impressed, frankly I don’t know. Bad way to treat guests.
Food mediocre, service even more mediocre. But its Time Square and its Italian so its a reliable way to fill your stomach. I did like the piano bar and the Ambiance is actually pretty good... Its just the service really underperformed. A little more attention would have been an easy 4.
We are planning to attend a show right across the street. I thought making a reservation two hours in advance of the show would be sufficient. It wasn’t. Although I made the reservation months in advance, we had to wait 40 minutes to be seated. We had to rush through the meal. The food was wonderful.
We just had dinner at DaMarino. While the dinner entertainment was a bit odd, a pianist that was playing old hits from the 80’s and 90’s extremely outta key he did however play a few Italian songs that we requested that redeemed himself!! Keep it Italian buddy. It’s a classy joint not a happy hour bar. The food was amazing as was our beautiful server Brittany. She’s a true asset to the their team
We all liked our food, pasta you could tell was freshly made, excellent sauce recipe. Paid quite a bit more than I would expect for similar dishes of similar quality outside NYC, but, hey, it’s New York. Left full, though!Definitely recommend for lunch, much less busy, we were almost the only seated table in the restaurant at one point, which was great coming out of body to body sidewalk traffic after Rockettes show.
We like a lot to go out. Yesterday we came to this magnificent place which friends told us about. We passed a delightful time there with fine food and a courteous team and a talented chef. We put this restaurant in our phone list and we will surely visit again very soon. We deeply recommend.
Absolutely amazing! Not only was the food delicious, but the staff was so attentive and the manager, Tom, was great. I felt like family! To top it off, we got to meet Mr. Big (Chris Noth) and he took over the entertainment with Frank Sinatras Summer Wind. I cant wait to go back!
Best raviolithe ravioli is the best i ever had since my granny. the food is very fresh and hot. The drinks are top notch and the bartender is very knowledgeable and drinks reflect.i recommend the long-island ice tea and worth $15.customer service is perfect, just wish check in move to front door instead at end of the bar. i will recommend this place to everyone. @jjlifetravels on Instagram
Went for my mom’s 60th bday. Service was great. Food was great. Ambiance was great. I was very pleased. The only noticeable problem is that the entrance is very cramped. When busy, it is very chaotic in the waiting area. If you are seeing an 8pm show you absolutely have to have a reservation for 6pm. They had trouble seating people on time because of how busy it was and the waiting room was packed and uncomfortable. However, considering how busy and hectic it was i thought they did a great job. We were seated within 10 minutes of our reservation time which was no problem. The host was even handing out glasses of prosecco to those who had to wait. I will be going back
Live Music by a Piano Man. Its entry is down steps off of street into a Beautifully Decorated Space, Intimate AtmosphereAnd Of Course Delicious foods!Bread and Bean dip for the table. I tried the home made soft mozzarella cheese on a salad it was so yummy! Then for the main entre I had the lobster Ravioli! It was perfect! Cant wait to go again!
My 17 year old son and I ate at Da Marino in March 2014. We were visiting from Memphis, TN and this was my sons first time to NYC. The food was wonderful. The staff were very helpful and friendly to us. They enjoyed our southern accents and we had a wonderful time going back and forth with friendly teasing of how we pronounced things vs how they did. I only make this comment because the staff and our waiter especially treated us like family. My son and I were so impressed with the presentation of our food that we only regretted eating it because it was so lovely. (Im ashamed to say I made a complete tourist fool of myself by taking photos of our orders to send home.) It has been almost a year since we were there and the memories my son and I have of this restaurant are truly wonderful and cherished. I look forward to returning with my husband sometime in the near future.
Pre Theatre DinnerWe had reservations through open table and from the moment we arrived the staff was Fantastic we were seated in less than 2 minutes. The piano music was outstanding and our table could not have been more fittingTo the occasionThe drinks were great and the food was phenomenal I had the lobster ravioli and also had the lamb chops since it was a large portion and my girl decided to shareI love that she has a small appetiteI always get two meals. LOLThe wait staff and manager treated us like old friends even though this was our first visitI fully recommend this for a pre shoe experience because it was an experience nor just a mealThank, youDa Marino and staff we will return
Went here on a Saturday night, not too busy, the food was really good but the service was horrible. It took our waiter 10-15 to bring our drinks each time we ordered, and also with our entrees. We ordered dessert and after 30 minutes it still didnt come out. The manager spend the entire time talking to 2 girls instead of caring for everyone else as well. The food was good but nothing spectacular and the visit was definitely not worth how expensive it was.
Stopped in after a Broadway show. It has the feel of a hole-in-the-wall great eatery. The live music was loud but good. Fun atmosphere.Wine - tasted like it had been sitting around open for a long time.Bread - mehPasta - awesome.Service - Pretty attentive for a completely full and overwhelmed servers.
I was overall underwhelmed. The fried calamari was very good as a starter, but it went downhill from there. The rigatoni and sausage was not very good. The sausage had no flavor. The signature dish chocolate fettuccine just didnt work and the shrimp were overcooked and rubery.
At first, the place looks like a regular hole in the wall that was overdone with twinkling lights. Descend the stairs and it feels like you have walked into a restaurant in Italy. We were seated rather quickly and given menus. Our waiter wasnt the worlds best waiter, heck very far from it. But the other wait staff was super attentive, as soon as we were down the last piece of bread, he rushed and bought us a new basket or if we needed water or anything else for that matter. The food was a bit slow coming out but that could be because we were starving. The portions were generously sized and taste pretty decent. Our waiters shift was about to end half through our meal, so when we asked for the dessert menu he gave us the bill. When we got annoyed and told him of the error he completely blew it off. The other wait staff saw how annoyed we got and finally bought us the dessert menu. The cheesecake was not available so we got the layered chocolate cake with fresh fruits instead. While the cake was good, the fresh fruits was just random bits of fruits on the plate and looked like it was thrown together hastily. As we finished eating and we were bit annoyed, the wait staff stopped us and gave us a free Limoncello to apologize for the bad service. Which was really a nice gesture on their part.
2nd time waiting for 45+ minutes on a Saturday evening with a reservation. Food is good but not worth a 3rd time standing in that tiny entrance area packed with people who wait there for ages as well. They should analyze the average stay of their customers and make changes in their booking system. Good food, terrible experience yet again...
This place is absolutely outstanding. The staff is so friendly and welcoming!!! My family and I are picky about Italian food and after eating here we cannot name a better Italian place to eat in NYC. We all loved it here and will definitely be back. The mushroom ravioli is to die for.
I want to give it 5 stars so I will, even though there are some aspects that werent ideal. The positives: linguine vodka was amazing with great flavor and tang. Chicken marsala was also on point and great size portion. The Pinot noir was good as well. Our server Katalina (apologies if misspelled) was very attentive and knowledgeable.Knocks are: crowded if not claustrophobic inside and manager did try to rush us out after meal to seat the next table.
Went there with my sister and her friend for a lunch and we had a wonderful time and tasty food. We ordered lamb stack which I would recommend for anyone who goes there to try it, one of the best stacks I had in a long time, spinach pasta was light and creamy. Checkin cheese pasta was as expected. They gave us complementary desert and orange juice as it was my sisters birthday.
I celebrated my 40th bday here with my girlfriends and WOW!! It was AWESOME!! We were spending two days in NYC and this was the highlight of our visit. The food was good, the service amazing, beautiful decor and such a fun ambience. We were treated like queens. We had so much fun!! Thank you Da Marinos!! We will certainly come back!
This place is a hidden treasure in NYC!! Great food, with fab and friendly staff who made me feel so welcome on every visit. A traditional Italian restaurant and bar that I would highly recommend to anyone visiting New York, even if you dont want to eat, pop in for a very large glass of wine :)
Greatest pasta and meatballs in NY city. Great prices,,perfect service . The best Italian place to eat since my Italian mother got to old to cook. Try it . You will keep going back. Great selections, great music, friendly employees and youll hardly be able to finish the great portions.
Amazing restaurant! The atmosphere, food and service was amazing. We spent 4 nights in the city and ate here for 2 of them. The thing that put Da Marino over the top was the service. Faycal was without a doubt the best waiter I have ever had or ever will have probably. Hes basically the Cristano Ronaldo of waiters. He could serve you McDonalds and you would love it and think it was a $50 burger. I highly recommend this place!
Step down two steps from the hectic street and enter a little slice of Italy for a great dinner before your theater. The long, narrow dining room is replete with stone walls adorned with faux grape vines and scenes of Portofino. As you dine you will be entertained by a pianist/vocalist playing classic tunes that are what you came to the Big Apple to hear. The food was delicious and moderately priced considering where you are. The drinks were done right but quite expensive. Like nine dollars for a beer and sixteen for a martini. The waitstaff, bussers, and especially the host were well trained, friendly, and professional. This place is a must-stop for the classic New York experience you came to town for.
Two stars is pretty generous here. My wife and I love authentic carbonara and were excited to try this place after reading reviews about the carbonara being “better than sex.” I tend to disagree. The carbonara here is far from authentic and is heavy on the cream and onion (which aren’t even a part of a traditional recipe). If I wanted to eat American Italian I could go to an Applebee’s and eat a Three cheese chicken penne and be more satisfied than this overpriced knock off. As a carbonara connoisseur it was a total let down for a basic Italian staple. Aside from the carbonara catastrophe, we endured what tasted like robitussin or as they call it “house wine,” an obnoxious owner that was all too proud of a sex and the city filming at the restaurant 15 years ago, and being held hostage by our waiter long after we finished our meal and wine and were ready to go. We should have taken a hint from the nearly empty restaurant at 9pm on a Friday night that this was a poor choice. Never again da Marino. I could pour Ragu spaghetti sauce over McDonald’s fries and be more satisfied.
My husband and I were in town to see a show. We chose this place because of its location but got away with much more than convenience. The service was outstanding, the food was delicious and the ambiance and music was so much fun. We had a great time and will definitively come back.
The worst. Make your reservation, get the annoying call to confirm your reservation, don’t be more than 10 min late or they’ll cancel your reservation....arrive on time and have them tell you “we’re 100% overbooked.” What?!?!! Have you ever done this before? People had been waiting over an hour still ahead of us. How do they do business in the theatre district? Absolute garbage. No apology, no explanation. B.S.
Food was ok. Nothing I couldnt get at another italian restaurant. We had a large party. Seating was not the best. Felt like we were sardines because the place is very small. The biggest complaint is we had our checks split up. We had 4 in my group and $25 gratuity added to our bill. Our friend had 1 dish and was charged a $15 gratuity which I think was a bit ridiculous as each group within our table paid a large tip.
We were looking for a italian cantina for lunch and Ive found the Da Marino. Despite of the weird entrance and visual the food was really good and very affordable. Very good salad dress and home made bread. The chicken parmigiana has very good size and tastes great. I would come back for sure.
Horrible place .... The bread was not house made ( was from the market ) may be 2-3days old, heated up in the microwave .. We asked fresh bread 3 times and they brought the same basket of bread everytime.Wine, it was the cheapest wine ever ,overcharged on the menu .The food was on the scale of 10 maybe 3.NEVER eat here again.Service was like attitude !!And so over charged , I feel ripped off.
We came in to look at the menu and the waiter offerd us to drink sparkling or regular water. My wife wanted a glass of water and i wanted a glass of sparkling. The waiter brought us a big bottle of sparkling water. At the meantime We saw that the prices in the menu were very high so we wanted to leave the resturant, but we had to pay for the big bottle 10$. It looked like a turist trap!Eny way, the place was not air-conditunated so it was very hot in the resturant. Eny way, as i said, this resturant is very very expensive!
If you want a unique and quirky Italian underground boutique restaurant. then you owe it to yourself to visit. Remember, this isnt a Large chain restuarant if you have a party bigger than 4 you may have to adjust. This is a great date night getaway or a place where friends have a beverage together. Bathrooms could use a makeover, but dont let that stop you. Coming from Austin Texas we were pleased and had a blast. It is on our must return list!!
We had dinner at this charming restaurant in May.Our experience was wonderful and staff was friendly and attentive.I requested a cozy table and we were given a great spot next to the piano bar. Needless to say we had delicious meal with fabulous ambience. We are definitely returning on our next visit to NYC.
I discovered this place in the summer of 2015 after a local recommended it as her favorite Italian restaurant in the city. After my first visit, it wasn’t just the delicious food and wine that make me return EVERY time I come to this city, it’s the fun, welcoming, friendly and quaint atmosphere... I love my experience every time!
The lasagna is amazing! After being disappointed by Pastys, I was overjoyed to find this hidden gem. The décor was comfortable and inviting, the staff efficient. The big surprise was the lasagna....as good as my mothers! This is a must visit whenever we are in Manhattan!
I give this place a perfect score because it is the perfect place. Truly one of a kind. From the live piano music playing in the background, the decor, the impeccable staff and last but certainly not least the INCREDIBLE cuisine. Da Marino is the best in New York City.

2021-12-23We visited Da Marino during the 2021 holiday season and it was fantastic from start to finish. We had a recommendation from a friend and ended up booking a reservation the same night. We were politely greeted by Tom, the manager, and he checked our vaccine cards and showed us to our table quickly even with our late reservations. John, our waiter, and the other waitstaff were also extremely friendly, quick to respond, and knowledgeable about the menu.My fiancée and I ended up ordering some wine and Bruschetta al Pomodoro (Tomato Bruschetta) to start. They provided complimentary bread which was still warm and was fantastic with the provided side dish. My fiancée ended up ordering the carbonara which she thought was delicious and had plenty of pancetta, was creamy, but not too heavy at all. I had the Lobster ravioli with shrimp which was also very good. For dessert, we had the homemade Tiramisu and it was so good we ended up finishing it all.The ambiance was amazing, a live pianist arrived at 6PM and was playing Christmas music. Even Tom got on the microphone and received applause for his amazing performance of “My Way” by Frank Sinatra. We can’t wait to be back again in April!

2022-02-17The whole entire experience was exquisite. By far one of the best restaurants I’ve ever been too, both in atmosphere and with cuisine. Perfect place to dine after seeing a Wednesday matinee. Continuing the musical experience with Danny. Not to mention, the phenomenal murals painted on every wall as if your in the Calabrian region of Italy. Let’s talk about how lovely the staff was, especially the Maitre De, Tom. They even let me sing 2 songs. As well as the food, just divine, everything was cooked to perfection! It’s a must, I give it 5 stars!

2022-04-04I had secured a four person dinner reservation for 5:30pm and checked in at 5:20pm. The restaurant was severely overbooked. We waited until 6:50pm and then had to make a decision to leave for another restaurant because we had Broadway show tickets for 8:00pm. Talk about a ruined 50th birthday celebration. The restaurant communication was poor and they could have told dozens of people impatiently waiting for other missed reservations that there was very little chance for them to honor their time slots. This would have given patrons other options to leave elsewhere for other dinner plans. Instead they kept telling people with reservations (table available soon) and non-reservation guests (20-30min). What a mess in scheduling! The restaurant and food could be good but never got a chance to try. Highly doubt that I willbook their again. Anyone going to dinner and show based on time should look elsewhere.

2022-06-22Wonderful experience. Fun atmosphere. Our server Natalia was so sweet. It was our 15th anniversary and the manager surprised us with celebratory shots, which was so kind of him but also so funny because we don’t drink. We really appreciated the gesture.

2022-01-17Love this restaurant. Definitely like coming home for Sunday dinner. Craig, Tom and staff are so amazing. They welcome you like family and treat you with open arms. If you havent been I highly recommend the chocolate fettuccine it to die for!!
