5 years after first visit, we revisited Dawas for a dinner recently and this time it was great. We tried many of the appetizers and dishes and all of them were very delicious. The plates are small but all yummy. I recommend ordering a few items and sharing. On another note, the service was also very good and the waiters were friendly. We were there with 3 kids and you can guess how much mess we created. Extra thanks to them for still smiling at us even after that mess.
Loved this place! Super cute interior, on point service, ridiculously good curry cauliflower florets and tons of veg friendly options! I would pass on the rice beer though... That was a touch too adventurous for me and felt like drinking carbonated-but-going-flat rice milk 🙅 They also have outdoor seating out front as well.
First time in this restaurant since my friends wanted to come and try it out. First off, Food was mediocre. After the end of our meal and we were ready to pay (just pay, we did not want to leave yet), the server goes up to us and wanted us to pay right away. Mind you it wasn’t even that busy. Last, it takes them about 2 minutes to charge my card and the audacity for the server to kick us out of the restaurant and told us to wait outside to sign the receipt because they have to get another table ready and they need our table for a party of 10. Future reference, don’t kick people out regardless if you have another party and be patient next time.
I love the minimalist aspect of this restaurant starting with limited food items and a simple clean space. They have variety in cuisines with fancy names; however, the names don’t do justice to its taste and price. Except for few items, the food is fairly average and I found the prices a bit high considering the fact that its in Queens. Would definitely recommend this place but not a budget friendly place.
Unbelievably good food! I am so upset I’ve waited almost a year of living in neighborhood to check this place out. After eating here tonight we will be coming here once a week for the foreseeable future. Amazing food, great decor, nice outdoor dining set up.We started off with the cauliflower pop which was delicious and the sauce went so well with it, then had the kale salad that had goat cheese and boy was that tasty. We shared the burger and chicken sandwich. The burger was so juicy, cooked to perfection had a great sauce on it “again not sure what the secret sauces are but they are amazing” the chicken sandwich is breaded very lightly cooked perfect came with another type of sauce. We loved everything we tried! They also have very INEXPENSIVE DRINK PRICES! Not sure what others are talking about but we each had glass of wine and all that food for under 70$ which is inexpensive to me. I pray they make it through cuomos destruction of small businesses. We will do all we can to support!
Ah it was good while it was good. But hey guys, if you portray yourself as a premium expensive restaurant and then deliver your food cold, gloopy, insipid and smooshed into cheap Chinese takeout boxes, then I should give you a standing applause for cutting corners. You cannot afford to do that since you are not a cheap bodega. So heres is a pic of your over expensive chicken chilli and cauliflower where it belongs to in its packaging.
Giving a modern, contemporary mix to the traditional Tibetan dishes and loving it !Always visiting this spot once in a while. Love how they are so creative and bring up new dishes to the menu- fresh, unique and always delicious!Love their cute jhaadam (thermos) and the cute lil pots to drink in.
Couldn’t recommend it more. It was the best fusion I have ever tried in my life, even better than some authentic asian restaurant. The ingredients were all fresh especially the fish - i could tell from the texture of the food. And the beef tongue, yummmmmm. Gonna take my other friends here to try out other stuffs on the menu for sure.
If I could give this place 6 stars I would!I haven’t had such a delicious and amazing meal in sooo long. It was simple “homey” clean cooking. Nothing but good food served by the folks who probably grew up eating this food.Chicken momos and shabaley to start. The momos (Nepal dumplings) were sitting in a delicious curry like sauce, can’t be any better. The shabaley were perfectly fried little beef empanadas. And the hot sauce?? Fugetaboutit! A little spicy but it can make a rubber shoe taste good.I ordered the buttermilk fried chicken sandwich and my wife ordered the baked eggs. I couldn’t eat my sandwich fast enough. I had to or else my wife would’ve gotten more then one bite. I had to move quick to get a bite of her eggs as well.My parents ordered the jasha katsa, thenthuk and French toast. The chicken in the Jahsa katsa was extremely flavorful. The thenthuk noodles are perfect after a long day or to prepare for a long day. The French toast, I mean Chantilly vanilla cream....you can’t go wrong. Also they have jasmine kombucha on tap.I can’t wait to come back, I might just have to become Nepal.
My favorite Himalayan restaurant in NYC. We ordered beef tongue which is a bit spicy but the texture of meat was awesomely soft. and we also ordered kale salad, which definitely recommended, and beef noodle soup which is healthy taste with mediocore salty and gentle flavor
First time and very impressed. There is another Nepalese place we regularly go to (Bajeko Sekuwa) which is excellent so were hesitant to try this. Glad we did, the food was delicious and menu is unique. If there is one criticism, then $3 for a small coffee which finishes quick, should be offered on a refill. Otherwise Id recommend!
Came in for a quick dinner, not having crazy expectations- just trying something new- but we were blown out by the quality of food and service provided. Dokar and Matthew were so welcoming and thoughtful and the plates we had were amazing. Definetely recommend the Pork Chilli (marinated overnite), Thenthuk (loved it) and the Beet Salad (very light and tasty). 5 stars place!!! We will comeBack and try some more! Dinner menu is exquisite! ❤️❤️❤️
Very nice. A rather unique blend of French and Nepalese inspired dishes, couples with a mighty coffee machine, a great option for brunch. The Nepalese dishes a little different from Jackson Heights joints, but nevertheless quite recognizable. Definitely try this place sometime and decide if you want to add it to your to-go list.
Lovely ambiance and cozy; excellent service. I can’t speak to the American half of the menu since we were primarily there for Tibetan cuisine, but I thought my thenthuk tasted a little diluted and wasn’t as flavorful as other thenthuks I’ve had in other restaurants in the neighborhood. The vegetable momos were good however.
We came in for lunch around 2:30 on a Saturday. Most tables were occupied but there was no wait. We ordered a momo, fried chicken noodles and beef patties. The food came out quite fast. All dishes were very good, especially the momo. The hot sauce for beef patties was really spicy (they even gave a warning on the menu), but that was exactly why we wanted to try it. We even added the hot sauce to the other two dishes, which turned out amazing too.
The food at this restaurant is delicious and tasty. I had a nice lunch with a cold brew coffee. The coffee bar is fully equipped and the service is great. Id like this place to be an open working space during the mornings mid afternoon and 100% restaurant at night. Im not sure if Wi-Fi is available but the wide tables are perfect for working on a laptop/reading a book.
Is this ok for a regular woodside restaurant to add a 22% gratuity automatically to your check?Dawas at 51-18 Skillman Ave, Woodside is doing exactly that. When asked they were extremely rude and said thats their policy and I can call 311 if I have any question! Are they serious?!I am never going back and I will make sure none of my friends go there again if thats how they treat their customers.Thanks.
Amazing place. Really unexpected cozy gem in Queens, New York. Breakfast menu till 11 AM, after - brunch menu - mix of linch dishes and morning boosters.Coffee is really great and momos - tibetian dumplings one of the best in the city. Really, place i would came back again.
I ended up here on a very cold night in January and they had outside dining. They offered heaters and wonderful music and service. I was afraid to try something new, never having Himalayan food but now I have been back 3 times in 3 weeks!! My friend and I have gone crazy over their food. Super spicy and oh so perfect!! What a wonderful surprise! And the owners couldnt be nicer and more helpful.
Hands down for the food. It was remarkably good. The place was clean and I love the minimal decor. BUT, the service was worst. We were served by a guy. Since, a girl who was helping his table was nice though. He should work on his service skills. In a hospitality field, service is also a plus with a good food.
We just ordered some chili chicken, chicken momo and chili cauliflower and all three dishes were such a disaster. The food is overpriced as F and then they deliver it in cheap food boxes, all the food squished together. Everything looked unappetizing and everything tasty gloopy and disgusting. We have ordered from Dawas before and it was actually good food back then. Now its just not worth it anymore. Ugh. Totally killed our appetite and ruined our dinner.
My boyfriend and I come here often from Brooklyn and it is one of our favorite restaurants. Such a lovely business with friendly staff. The food is just impeccable, absolutely delicious. Ive come here for breakfast and dinner many times. Everything is made with such care. A cozy environment as well. Definitely come here. I cannot recommend this place enough. My favorites are the beef momo, thenthuk, and pork chili. For breakfast the chana and gwaramari with sunny side up eggs. You cannot go wrong with their pancakes either. I also love that they have my favorite coffee Olso. :)In conclusion, Dawas is perfect haha.
Dawa’s is the absolute best. I have loved all of the food I’ve had here (have only ordered from the Himalayan side of the menu, but I’ve been assured the American side is just as good). Everyone is so friendly and welcoming. During the pandemic they have been selling art and pantry staples from local artist and artisans, which served to cement their place in my heart.
The food is very flavorful and the portions are very generous. The calamari is a very good appetizer, not greasy and very well cooked. The ginger chicken was very well done, complex in flavors and with a good quantity of ginger in it. The staff is friendly and very helpful. The ambiance is charming and the back patio is cozy and very romantic.
We were really excited for this place cause the food options looked good on paper. Sadly the portions were small and the food had nothing that made it stand out or shine. To be honest the service was good and the decor made me feel like it had a Tibetan feel. I think my rating is harsh only because I expected more flavor from the food. The pancakes were tasty just small. I would go back to give them another chance but feel like they wouldnt have fixed anything about it.
First of all, I have been a resident of woodside/sunnyside waaay before they even started, seen so many places on the same spot before even Dawa’s was born. Now the review. This is the second time I go with my family, my mom and my sister and they added the gratuity to the check, both times. It said “for parties of 4 and more people” BUT we were 3. Why would they add the tip??... I seriously, I think they are profiling, they would not take our temperature and even not delivering us menus upon seating, while everyone would be getting them. I ordered a tea and it took about 10min to be delivered to the table, the server would not come to ask how was everything nor offering more water or anything we needed.SERIOUSLY one of the worst experiences I ever had eating out. I had been to that place many times but today they were just disappointing and it really makes me think to not comeback, no matter how good their food is.I had been a server for over 10 years with Michelin star restaurant experience, and I can tell that they really have to step the game with making a better experience and stop the assumptions... everyone deserves to be treated equally, no matter how much they spend.
Food is good and service from ayasha is amazing. But after visiting here every day i have realized the portions of food has changed significantly. I hope i will not have to get a magnifying glass to look at my food if this continues. Today i talked about this to the owner and her answer was extremely rude. She told me because its human beings who make the food. I used to go to this place almost every day. Not to mention 2 times a day mostly.
By far my favorite restaurant in NYC hands down. You can’t go wrong with practically everything on the menu on both ends of the cuisine spectrum.Highly recommend the pancakes, fried buttermilk chicken sandwich and the kale salad. For the Himalayan menu you cannot go wrong with the Shabaley (that sauce is a kicker).Just go!
Dawa’s is open and I’m so glad!! I usually dine here for brunch but today went for dinner. Very flavorful dishes: the chili cauliflower is A+, albeit a bit on the spicy side, and we also ordered the vegetarian patties (tsel-baley) which came in a dish of three with a delicious sauce on the side. Generous portions for a party of 2. The waitress also recommended a lovely natural wine to pair with both dishes. Really could not be happier, and now with the outdoor seating it makes for a very nice dinner experience. If you are in the area, I highly recommend that you stop by.
Was recommended to come here by my sister who lives near by. Food was delicious it was filling but not heavy which is perfect for breakfast. All the dishes was well presented and tasted delicious. Would recommend others to go here ! I have the breakfast skillet and really enjoyed how much vegetable was in it.
Love, love, this place. I should come here more often! It’s been a while since my last visit I would say over 6 months and the waiter remembered us, which I couldn’t believe! That was a nice touch. Shout out to MATTHEW!It’s the first time I’ve tried this cuisine and I love it. We typically go on Saturday and enjoy the brunch menu. Everything I’ve tried thus far has been amazing: chicken momo, chicken fried noodles, buttermilk chicken sandwich, baked eggs, slow roasted pull pork.Definitely ask about spicy level before order. Brunch portions is good for one person. If you have a big appetite I’d order two dishes.
Was here after watching youtube video, good ambience, nice hospitality but I am not impressed with food. We had momos, chowmein, gwaramari set. Its bland, gwaramari is huge disappointment, chowmein is nothing special. I dont think I will go back to this place again. But again servers were really friendly which is the best part.
This is certainly the best Himalayan/Nepalese food in the area, with a lively blend of flavors and fresh high-quality ingredients. In fact, its one of the best (and healthiest) restaurants of any kind in the neighborhood. I cant recommend it highly enough. Doubles as a pleasant café during the off hours.
Food is mediocre at best and there is a very rude lady that works there and never remembers the regular customers. What good is a neighborhood place that you frequent and they don’t even know who you are after six years? On top of everything the prices are pretty high. They could do better but it seems like they don’t really care.
I had lunch at Dawas one hot sunny summer afternoon. I was most impressed with the service, ambiance and the food!! The decor is a quaint and calming rustic country. We tried the buttermilk chicken sandwich and grass fed beef burger. Both were delicious and well-seasoned. We had the French toast for dessert and it really hit the sweet spot! (Whoever said you cant have breakfast food all hours of the day!) Overall, it was a magical afternoon with wonderful food and good company. I cant wait to go back and try the chicken momo next time!
A nice medium sized restaurant with an interesting mix of Himalayan and Western dishes, which seems to change at least some seasonally. The coffee cups modern while still looking simple and natural and the brass covered handle of the cutlery hints and the Himalayan roots. Eating from the Himalayan side of the menu (havent tried the Western dishes) the food was quite good and the roll (tingmo) was soft with a nice texture (and hugely filling). The bench along the wall is apparently not the most comfortable so you may want to choose you table / seat accordingly.
Food was really delicious. My coffee was also some of the best Ive ever had. Only complaint was it was the coffee and the food was a little bit slow coming out and then we were a little rushed to give up our table at the end. Someone was told to sit down at our table before we were ever given the check. Ill go back for the food and coffee but the service was a little off.
I don’t know what all the hype is about. The food in incredibly bland and the service was lacking. The beef noodle soup was watery and lacking any flavor. The salad was over dressed with a tangy vinaigrette that was not good. The veggie momos are the blandest thing I have ever eaten but the sauce that covers them is good. The yogurt is delicious. I’m shocked at how many people are raving about the flavors on here and you all have me wondering are my tastebuds broken? What are you tasting?!?!
Love the food here and the prices are right! I only have 2 warnings: 1) unless you enjoy very spicy food, ask about the spiciness of menu items before ordering and 2) plates are small so its best for 2 people to share 3 entrees. Servers here are friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed. Def a neighborhood gem.
Delicious meal of Himalayan cuisine. We got the beef and veggie momos, shogo baklep (potatoes with spice), gyuma (blood sausage), thentuk, and pharsi (kobucha squash stew with buckwheat pancakes). We also got the Paradise on Fire margarita and the Heated Affair (warmed whiskey drink). It was all delightful.Service was good and not rushed. The crowd was a mix of hipsters and families. The brunch menu and the Himalayan lunch menus are both served from 10 AM onwards. High chairs available. Not much room for strollers. No changing table in bathroom. Gets busy around 12:30, 1 PM.
Never have I gone to a place and have had excellent experiences every single time...If you feel like treating your stomach to the most delicious risotto youll ever have in your lifetime, order the butternut squash and mushroom dish.Servers know their stuff and are friendly.Get there now. Sit outside and enjoy l
Food wasn’t great at all and was given a lecture about sustainability when I complained about my meat being 90% fat and smelling stale - “we don’t want to waste any part of the animal” - sure but then price it accordingly or warn when you order and ensure it’s fresh.Would not recommend.
I loved the seasonal style menu as well as Himalayan menu. My favorite is momo (vegetarian, chicken or beef dumplings!) Try all of them , you won’t regret it. The Food was rich in flavour and costumer service and environment was very friendly. I also loved that the owner explained her environmentally conscious restaurant that also supports local business and local farmers! and has her own vegetable garden at the back of the restaurant in the summer ! I understand that most of the ingredients are organic and from farmers market and therefore can’t complained about the portion or the price. Price is worth the flavour and for me nutritional values and quality over quantity when it comes to food. Check out thier Instagram @dawasnyc
I live nearby and have eaten at Dawas maybe 20 times in past two years. My favorite local restaurant. Ive had most items on both the american and the himalayan sides of the menu and all have been good. My favorite is the Thuntuk stew - Ive had this dish in a number of restaurants in Jackson Hts and none compare to Dawas.Dawa is always there in the Kitchen cranking out every dish - and always friendly and easy goingShe recently obtained her liquor license - so now the place is full at busy times. But the wait staff is always friendly and on the case.
The GOOD for non-nationals, and OK for nationals. Tried their momos that were heavily priced then, which is recently lowered a bit. The price went down with the quality compromised. To a funny note, they charge for an extra ounce of sauce and thats a big lol. Ambience and utensils are unique. Staff keep updating, to which no comment.
Good limited menu, with periodic rotation. An excellent choice combination of Tibetan and Nepalese food and quirky and original, but affordable American or European favorites. The service is friendly, and theyve maintained and adapted the Italian bakery from whatever was here before them, regularly stocking Italian ricotta cheesecake, canolis. individual NY cheesecakes, Tiramisu and mouses.
Not a fan. First of all, my first choice wasnt available (fish and chips). My food was full of oil, as in the potato chips were soggy and oily. Also the buttermilk chicken sandwich was full of oil. I ordered to takeout. I threw half of my food out. Unfortunately, I would choose another establishment. If you like food full of oil, this is your place. Another think they dont have any ketchup.
Took our 2 year old here for breakfast before the brunch crowd set in. (Brunch starts at 11am, we got there by 10am). Had a delightful morning. Affordable and good. Fast and open early. Clean bathrooms. I love that you order at the counter and just find a seat. Free wifi and they even had a newspaper.
Chef Dawa has a really balanced and sophisticated palate across both california-american-french touches (worked at Jean George kitchen Mercer Kitchen) and Tibetan food. I’ve been here several times and still exploring the delicious menu. Great food at great prices, definitely among the best restaurants in woodside and jackson heights areas of this level of cooking. It’s a rare treat to have the Chef actually cooking, which is why the food is so great. Some recommendations:- Arancini rice balls - perfectly crisp with an interesting green zucchini sauce- Tibetan whole wheat gnocchi with caraway and shallot sauce- egg dishes (solid brunch)- pancakes- homemade ricotta and rhubarb with sourdough toast and kale (really soft, normally not a fan but chef dawa’s version is great)
Dawa always makes my dining experience an excellent one. She is an amazing chef making everything from stratch, fresh and top quality ingredients. This is a true gem of a place. The server Matt is so awesome, outgoing friendly and excellent hospitality. I dine here everytime im in town from Virginia. Never disappoints. It is must for anyone willing to try a new cuisine
I flew in from Chicago for a family wedding. My daughter picked me up at LaGuardia Airport and took me to Dawas for lunch which is somewhat nearby. We ate typical Hymalayan food which Ive never had before. Vegetarian food, spicy and very tasty!! We drank a cold coffee. Enjoyed our stop for lunch very much.
I have been to Dawas couple of times already and never got around to write a review. Well honest reviews definitely help when you are hopping restaurants and not very sure which ones to go to and what to eat.At Dawas I can eat anything on the menu any day.Their chicken sandwich is a bomb,Tibetan blood sausage aaahSeasonal vegitable salads a radFried noodles yumyumMomos how can I forgetChef Dawas food reflects her passion for food and make it so fresh and flavorful. A must try in woodside!
This date 7-02-2015 at around 630am i ordered a simple toasted bagel w cream cheese and a roll -bacon egg and cheese..when i got home and opened it, the bagel wasnt toasted AND there was nothing inside, no cream cheese no butter no nothing, the roll (bacon egg n cheese) the BREAD was OLD! AND WASNT TOASTED! tasted very bad cuz the bread..and on top of that, the coffee needs more milk and it also taste bad..im sorry for. The negtive review but that crappy breakfast cost me money and we couldnt eat it, i always believed that they have someone in the kitchen that hate his(her( job with passion and thats why they make so many mistake ALL THE TIME

2022-04-25First time here and thought the food was ok. Ordered roasted potatoes with eggs and sausage and a mimosa and covfefe at the end. Sausage was juicy but my main brunch dish wasn’t what I expected. It was very basic. I may give this place one more shot but the price for dishes are pretty high when the portion size is tiny.

2021-09-13It was my first time dining in a Tibetan restaurant. The ambience was simple and cozy, service was impeccable and best of all, the food was worth my money spent! Every dish was tasteful, I never realize that Tibetan food had so much flavor to it! Definitely try the spicy cauliflower, it is a must get!

2021-09-23What an adorable and hipster brunch spot Dawa’s is and we really enjoyed their cozy environment. They served both American authentic and Himalaya-inspired options for brunch, which are perfect for friends gathering. We had Pancake & Grass Fed Beef Burger from the American menu and Jhasha Katsa, Chicken Sekuwa & Chana n Gwaramari with Sunny-side-up Eggs from Himalayan inspired menu to share with a group of 4 adults & 1 kid. The portion was kind of small compared to most brunch spots and we would suggest to order more. The food was overall delicious & unique but the level of spice was so high, which surprised us. Our favorite was the Jhasha Katsa which was appetizing and the texture of steamed bun that came with this dish was soft & delicate.

2021-06-27Finally got a chance to visit. The decor & ambiance inside was totally opposite of what I thought it would be. Very minimalist & soothing. Every dish we ordered were on point. Very palatable. Chicken wings were the best. It had that distinct flavor which made them extraordinary. I have always had the classic tingmo but the buckwheat tingmo here was amazing. Jaal jeera drink was another fav of mine. Would very much like to visit again for the remainder of the menu. Little pricey but worth it.

2022-06-07Food was incredible. Had an issue with online menu based on the qr code. The menu I saw was not the menu that was correct. Ask for a physical menu. Ended up with a $53~ bill (tip included) for one guy who ordered two dishes and two beers. I chose to sit outside, so minor issues with flies and insects are hard to blame the establishment for.

2021-11-14Food is really good. Better if you like spicy. Cauliflower and chicken wings our favorites!
